To obtain an accurate description of broad-band photometric star cluster evolution, certain effects should be accounted for, such as the preferential loss of low-mass stars and the retain of stellar remnants. Moreover, the IMF and metallicity affect photometry as well. Due to their advanced evolutionary state, globular clusters (GCs) are interesting test cases for cluster models describing these effects. In this paper we describe cluster models in which the above effects are included. The photometric evolution of clusters is predicted, and the results are applied to Galactic GCs. The presented cluster models represent an analytical description of the evolution of the underlying stellar mass function due to stellar evolution and dynamical cluster dissolution. Stellar remnants are included by using initial-remnant mass relations, while cluster photometry is computed from the Padova 1999 isochrones. Our study shows that the preferential loss of low-mass stars, the retain of stellar remnants, as well as IMF and metallicity variations strongly influence the magnitude, colour and mass-to-light ratio evolution of clusters. The different effects can be clearly separated with our models. The models are applied to the Galactic GC population, of which the magnitude, colour and mass-to-light ratio ranges are well reproduced. We also show that the mass-to-light ratios of clusters of similar ages and metallicities cannot be assumed to be constant for all cluster luminosities. Instead, mass-to-light ratio increases with cluster luminosity and mass. These models underline the importance of detailed cluster models when considering cluster photometry. With the analytic framework provided in this paper, observed cluster properties can be interpreted in a more complete perspective. (Abridged)
VLT images in $BVI$ are used to identify the optical counterparts to bright CHANDRA X-ray points sources discovered by Kraft et al. (2001, ApJ, 560, 675) in NGC5128. Of a total of 111 X-ray point sources with L_X>2*10^{36} ergs/s present in a 56 arcmin^2 field centered on this galaxy, 58 have optical counterparts. Based on the sizes, optical magnitudes and colors, 20 new globular cluster counterparts of X-ray sources are identified, plus 3 identified based on their sizes. This brings the total number of globular cluster X-ray sources in this galaxy to 33, and establishes that 30% of the X-ray …
The discovery of young globular clusters in merging galaxies and other environments provides an opportunity to study directly the process of globular cluster formation. Empirically it appears that globular cluster formation occurs preferentially in regions in which star formation occurs at a high rate and efficiency. Further, the interstellar medium in such regions is likely to be at a higher pressure than less active star-forming environments. An additional observational clue to the globular cluster formation process is that young globular clusters have little or no mass-radius relationship. …
The majority of observed mass-to-light ratios of globular clusters are too low to be explained by `canonical' cluster models, in which dynamical effects are not accounted for. Moreover, these models do not reproduce a recently reported trend of increasing M/L with cluster mass, but instead predict mass-to-light ratios that are independent of cluster mass for a fixed age and metallicity. This study aims to explain the M/L of globular clusters in four galaxies by including stellar evolution, stellar remnants, and the preferential loss of low-mass stars due to energy equipartition. Analytical clu…
We present the stellar main sequence luminosity function (LF) of the disrupted, low-mass, low-concentration globular cluster Palomar 5 and its well-defined tidal tails, which emanate from the cluster as a result of its tidal interaction with the Milky Way. The results of our deep (B ~ 24.5) wide-field photometry unequivocally indicate that preferentially fainter stars were removed from the cluster so that the LF of the cluster's main body exhibits a significant degree of flattening compared to other globular clusters. There is clear evidence of mass segregation, which is reflected in a radial …
We present an analysis of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and globular clusters (GCs) in five galaxies using Chandra, and HST data. Of the 186 LMXBs within the optical fields 71 are in GCs, confirming that LMXBs are formed particularly efficiently in GCs. However, there is no statistically significant correlation between the distance of a GC from the center of its host galaxy and its LMXB hosting probability. Metal-rich GCs are 3.4 times more likely to host LMXBs than metal-poor ones. Intriguingly, the LMXBs in NGC 1399 are preferentially in the reddest GCs of the metal-rich subsystem. This in…
Our deep Chandra exposures of 47Tuc and moderate exposures of NGC 6397 reveal a wealth of new phenomena for interacting X-ray binaries (IXBs) in globular clusters. In this (late) Review, updated since the conference, I summarize recent and ongoing analysis of the millisecond pulsars, the compact binaries containing white dwarfs and neutron stars, and the chromospherically active binaries in both globular clusters. Spectral variability analysis enables new insights into source properties and evolutionary history. These binary populations, now so ``easily'' visible, are large enough that their p…
The small group of Galactic Globular Clusters (GGC) (Pal 12, Terzan 7, Ruprecht 106, Arp 2) recently discovered to be significantly younger (by ~3-4 Gyr) than the average cluster population of the Galaxy are shown to lie near planes passing in the vicinity of some satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and through the Galactic Centre itself. Assuming that these configurations represent a fossil record of interactions between the Galaxy and its companions from which these clusters originated, we identified, along one of them, another candidate ``young'' GGC, i.e. IC4499, whose Color-Magnitude Diag…
We argue that any violent galactic winds following early epoch of star bursts would significantly weaken the potentials of galaxies, and leave lasting signatures such as a lowered dark halo density and preferentially radial/escaping orbits for halo tracers such as globular clusters. A galaxy is disintegrated if more than half of its dynamical mass is blown off. The presence of dense halos in galaxies and the absence of intergalactic/escaping globulars should imply an upper limit on the amount of baryons lost in galactic winds around 4% of the total mass of the galaxy. This translates to limits…
Luminous X-ray binaries (>1E34 erg/s, LMXBs) have a neutron star or black hole primary, and in globular clusters, most of these close binaries are expected to be have evolved from wider binaries through dynamical interactions with other stars. We sought to find a predictor of this formation rate that is representative of the initial properties of globular clusters rather than of the highly evolved core quantities. Models indicate the half-light quantities best reflect the initial conditions, so we examine whether the associated dynamical interaction rate, proportional to L^1.5 r^-2.5, is usefu…
We investigate the long-term dynamical evolution of two distinct stellar populations of low-mass stars in globular clusters in order to study whether the energy equipartition process can explain the high number of stars harbouring abundance anomalies seen in globular clusters. We analyse N-body models by artificially dividing the low-mass stars (m<0.9 Msun) into two populations: a small number of stars (second generation) consistent with an invariant IMF and with low specific energies initially concentrated towards the cluster-centre mimic stars with abundance anomalies. These stars form from …
We probe the evolution of globular clusters that could form in giant molecular clouds within high-redshift galaxies. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the large and dense enough gas clouds assemble naturally in current hierarchical models of galaxy formation. These clouds are enriched with heavy elements from earlier stars and could produce star clusters in a similar way to nearby molecular clouds. The masses and sizes of the model clusters are in excellent agreement with the observations of young massive clusters. Do these model clusters evolve into globular clusters that we see in our a…
We present the first results from the analysis of GIRAFFE spectra of more than 1200 red giants stars in 19 Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs), to study the chemical composition of second generation stars and their link with global cluster parameters. We confirm that the extension of the Na-O anticorrelation (the most striking signature of polluted, second generation populations) is strictly related to the very blue (and hot) extreme of the Horizontal Branch (HB). Long anticorrelations seem to require large mass and large-sized, eccentric orbits, taking the GCs far away from the central regions o…
We detect 353 X-ray point sources, mostly low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), in four Chandra observations of Centaurus A (NGC 5128), the nearest giant early-type galaxy, and correlate this point source population with the largest available ensemble of confirmed and likely globular clusters associated with this galaxy. Of the X-ray sources, 31 are coincident with 30 globular clusters that are confirmed members of the galaxy by radial velocity measurement (2 X-ray sources match one globular cluster within our search radius), while 1 X-ray source coincides with a globular cluster resolved by HST im…
We report on the {\it Chandra} observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC 1399, concentrating on the X-ray sources identified with globular clusters (GCs). A large fraction of the 2-10 keV X-ray emission in the $8' \times 8'$ {\it Chandra} image is resolved into point sources with luminosities $\ge 5 \times 10^{37}$ \ergsec. These sources are most likely Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs). In a region imaged by {\it HST} about 70% of the X-ray sources are located within GCs. This association suggests that in giant elliptical galaxies luminous X-ray binaries preferentially form in GCs. Many of the …
Studies of nearby elliptical and S0 galaxies reveal that roughly half of the low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), which are luminous tracers of accreting neutron star or black hole systems, are in clusters. There is a surprising tendency of LMXBs to be preferentially associated with metal-rich globular clusters (GCs), with metal-rich GCs hosting three times as many LMXBs as metal-poor ones. There is no convincing evidence of a correlation with GC age so far. In some galaxies the LMXB formation rate varies with GC color even within the metal-rich peak of the typical bimodal cluster metallicity dist…
We present a study of the globular cluster systems of four early-type poststarburst galaxies using deep g and I-band images from the ACS camera aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). All the galaxies feature shells distributed around their main bodies and are thus likely merger remnants. The color distribution of the globular clusters in all four galaxies shows a broad peak centered on g-I ~ 1.4, while PGC 6240 and PGC 42871 show a significant number of globular clusters with g-I ~ 1.0. The latter globular clusters are interpreted as being of age ~ 500 Myr and likely having been formed in th…
We test the hypothesis that globular clusters form in supergiant molecular clouds within high-redshift galaxies. Numerical simulations demonstrate that such large, dense, and cold gas clouds assemble naturally in current hierarchical models of galaxy formation. These clouds are enriched with heavy elements from earlier stars and could produce star clusters in a similar way to nearby molecular clouds. The masses and sizes of the model clusters are in excellent agreement with the observations of young massive clusters. Do these model clusters evolve into globular clusters that we see in our and …
We present N-body simulations of globular clusters, in orbits around the Galaxy, in order to study quantitatively and geometrically the tidal effects they encounter. The clusters are modelised with multi-mass King-Michie models (Michie 1963), including mass segregation at initial conditions. The Galaxy is modelled as realistic as possible, with three components: bulge, disk and dark halo. The main finding is that there exist two giant tidal tails around the globuler cluster in permanence along its orbit, whatever this orbit. The length of these tails is of the order of 5 tidal radii, or greate…
The globular cluster (GC) systems of the Milky Way and of our neighboring spiral galaxy, M31, comprise 2 distinct entities, differing in 3 respects. 1. M31 has young GCs, ages from ~100 Myr to 5 Gyr old, as well as old globular clusters. No such young GCs are known in the Milky Way. 2. We confirm that the oldest M31 GCs have much higher nitrogen abundances than do Galactic GCs at equivalent metallicities. 3. Morrison et al. found M31 has a subcomponent of GCs that follow closely the disk rotation curve of M31. Such a GC system in our own Galaxy has yet to be found. These data are interpreted i…
We present a reanalysis of far-ultraviolet (FUV) observations of the globular cluster NGC 2808 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. These data were first analyzed by Brown and coworkers, with an emphasis on the bright, blue horizontal branch (HB) stars in this cluster. Here, our focus is on the population of fainter FUV sources, which include white dwarfs (WDs), blue stragglers (BSs) and cataclysmic variables (CVs). We have therefore constructed the deepest FUV-NUV colour-magnitude diagram of NGC 2808 and also searched for variability among our FUV sources. Overall, we have found approx. …
We report results of a large set of N-body calculations aimed to study the evolution of multi-mass star clusters in external tidal fields. Our clusters start with the same initial mass-functions, but varying particle numbers, orbital types and density profiles. Our main focus is to study how the stellar mass-function and other cluster parameters change under the combined influence of stellar evolution, two-body relaxation and the external tidal field. We find that the lifetimes of star clusters moving on similar orbits scale as T sim T_RH^x, where T_RH is the relaxation time, and the exponent …
Large-field multi-color images of 20 galactic globular clusters are used to investigate the presence of tidal tails around these stellar systems. Field and cluster stars are sorted with the help of color-magnitude diagrams, and star-count analysis is performed on the selected cluster stars in order to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of their surface density. We study the overdensities of these stars using the wavelet transform of the star counts in order to filter the background density noise and to detect the weak structures, at large scale, formed by the numerous stars previously members …
We present a series of simple, largely analytical models to compute the effects of disruption on the mass function of star clusters. Our calculations include evaporation by two-body relaxation and gravitational shocks and mass loss by stellar evolution. We find that, for a wide variety of initial conditions, the mass function develops a turnover or peak and that, after 12 Gyr, this is remarkably close to the observed peak for globular clusters, at M_p = 2 10^5 solar masses. Below the peak, the evolution is dominated by two-body relaxation, and the mass function always develops a tail of the fo…
We test the hypothesis that metal-poor globular clusters form within disk galaxies at redshifts z>3. Numerical simulations demonstrate that giant gas clouds, which are cold and dense enough to produce massive star clusters, assemble naturally in hierarchical models of galaxy formation at high redshift. Do model clusters evolve into observed globular clusters or are they disrupted before present as a result of the dynamical evolution? To address this question, we calculate the orbits of model clusters in the time-variable gravitational potential of a Milky Way-sized galaxy, using the outputs of…
The galactic population of globular clusters are old, dense star systems, with a typical cluster containing $10^4 - 10^6$ stars. As an old population of stars, globular clusters contain many collapsed and degenerate objects. As a dense population of stars, globular clusters are the scene of many interesting close dynamical interactions between stars. These dynamical interactions can alter the evolution of individual stars and can produce tight binary systems containing one or two compact objects. In this review, we discuss the theoretical models of globular cluster evolution and binary evoluti…
We review Galactic halo formation theories and supporting evidence, in particular kinematics and detailed chemical abundances of stars in some relevant globular clusters as well as Local Group dwarf galaxies. Outer halo red HB clusters tend to have large eccentricities and inhabit the area populated by dwarf spheroidal stars, favoring an extraGalactic origin. Old globulars show the full range of eccentricities, while younger ones seem to have preferentially high eccentricities, again hinting at their extraGalactic origin. We compare detailed abundances of a variety of elements between the halo…
We present radial velocities, Fe, and Al abundances for 180 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Galactic globular cluster Omega Centauri ($ω$ Cen). The majority of our data lie in the range 11.0$<$V$<$13.5, which covers the RGB from about 1 mag. above the horizontal branch to the RGB tip. The selection procedures are biased towards preferentially observing the more metal--poor and luminous stars of $ω$ Cen. Abundances were determined using equivalent width measurements and spectrum synthesis analyses of moderate resolution spectra (R$\approx$13,000) obtained with the Blanco 4m telescope and Hy…
We study the dynamical evolution of the M87 globular cluster system (GCS) with a number of numerical simulations. We explore a range of different initial conditions for the GCS mass function (GCMF), for the GCS spatial distribution and for the GCS velocity distribution. We confirm that an initial power-law GCMF like that observed in young cluster systems can be readily transformed through dynamical processes into a bell-shaped GCMF. However, only models with initial velocity distributions characterized by a strong radial anisotropy increasing with the galactocentric distance are able to reprodu…
(Abridged) A high fraction of the Low Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs) in early-type galaxies are associated with globular clusters (GCs). Here, we discuss the correlations between LMXBs and GCs in a sample of four early-type galaxies. There is some evidence that the fraction of LMXBs associated with GCs (f_X-GC) increases along the Hubble sequence from spiral bulges to S0s to Es to cDs. On the other hand, the fraction of globular clusters which contain X-ray sources appears to be roughly constant at f_GC-X ~ 4%. There is a strong tendency for the X-ray sources to be associated with the optically m…
We present images of the recent galaxy merger NGC 3256 obtained with the WFPC2 of the Hubble Space Telescope in B and I filters. We show that there is a large population of more than 1,000 compact, bright blue objects in this galaxy within the 7 kpc x 7 kpc region studied. These objects have sizes, colors and luminosities like those expected for young Galactic globular clusters with ages ranging from a few to several hundred Myr. On this basis, we identify at least some fraction of the compact, bright blue objects in NGC 3256 as young globular clusters. The young cluster system comprises 15-20…
Perhaps the most noteworthy of recent findings in extragalactic globular cluster (GC) research are the multimodal GC metallicity distributions seen in massive early-type galaxies. We explore the origin of these distinct GC populations, the implications for galaxy formation and evolution, and identify several new properties of GC systems. First, when we separate the metal-rich and metal-poor subpopulations, in galaxies with bimodal GC metallicity distributions, we find that the mean metallicity of the metal-rich GCs correlates well with parent galaxy luminosity but the mean metallicity of the m…
This paper includes two parts. The first is to present the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 49 globular cluster (GC) X-ray sources in the BATC 13 intermediate-band filters from 3800 to 10000 A, and identify 8 unidentified X-ray sources in M31. Using the X-ray data of Einstein observation from 1979 to 1980, ROSAT HRI observation in 1990, Chandra HRC and ACIS-I observations from 1999 to 2001, and the BATC optical survey from 1995 to 1999, we find 49 GC X-ray sources and 8 new unidentified X-ray sources in the BATC M31 field. By analyzing SEDs and FWHMs, 4 of the 8 X-ray sources may be GC …
We analyze the luminosity function of the globular clusters (GCs) belonging to the early-type galaxies observed in the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey. We have obtained estimates for a Gaussian representation of the GC luminosity function (GCLF) for 89 galaxies. We have also fit the GCLFs with an "evolved Schechter function", which is meant to reflect the preferential depletion of low-mass GCs, primarily by evaporation due to two-body relaxation, from an initial Schechter mass function similar to that of young massive clusters. We find a significant trend of the GCLF dispersion with galaxy luminosity…
I compute the estimated distribution function f(q) for the apparent axis ratio q of various types of stellar systems, using a nonparametric kernel method. I then invert f(q) to find the distribution of intrinsic axis ratios, using two different hypotheses: first, that the stellar systems are all oblate, and second, that they are all prolate. The shapes of globular clusters in our own galaxy are consistent, at the 99% confidence level, with both the oblate and prolate hypothesis. The shapes of dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster are consistent, at the 99% confidence level, with the prolate hypo…
B,V CCD frames have been used to derive surface brightness profiles for NGC 3201 out to ~18 arcmin. A total of 857 radial velocities with median precision ~1 km/s for 399 member giants have been used to trace the velocity dispersion profile out to 32' (the approximate tidal radius from fits of single-mass, isotropic King-Michie models to the cluster surface brightness profiles). The median difference in radial velocity for stars on either side of an imaginary axis moved through the cluster in 1 degree steps shows a significant maximum amplitude of 1.22+/-0.25 km/s. We discuss possible explanat…
HST WFPC1 observations revealed 738 bright star clusters spread over the inner 12 kpc of the interacting galaxy pair NGC 4038/39. If the young star clusters (YSCs) formed in the global starburst are (proto-) globular or open clusters has far-reaching consequences for the formation of elliptical galaxies. Effective radii of the YSCs are difficult to measure on WFPC1 images, their present luminosity function (LF) looks exponential. Evolutionary synthesis models for star clusters of various metallicities are used to individually age-date these clusters and describe their future luminosity and col…
We present high-dispersion spectra of two extremely massive star clusters in galactic merger remnants. One cluster, W30, is located in the ~500 Myr old merger remnant NGC 7252 and has a velocity dispersion and effective radius of sigma=27.5+-2.5 km/s and R_eff=9.3+-1.7 pc, respectively. The other cluster, G114, located in the ~3 Gyr old merger remnant NGC 1316, is much more compact, R_eff=4.08+-0.55 pc, and has a velocity dispersion of sigma=42.1+-2.8 km/s. These measurements allow an estimate of the virial mass of the two clusters, yielding M_dyn(W30)=1.59(+-0.26) * 10^7 Msun and M_dyn(G114)=…
We present a proper motion and CCD photometric study of stars in the distant halo globular cluster Palomar 13. The absolute proper motion of Pal 13 with respect to the background galaxies, derived from moderate scale photographic plates separated by a 40-year baseline, is $(μ_{αcos δ}, μ_δ) = (+2.30, +0.27) \pm (0.26, 0.25)$ milliarc-seconds per year. The resultant total space velocity (315 km s$^{-1}$) implies that Pal 13 is in the inner part of its orbit near perigalacticon. Orbital integration reveals the cluster to possess an inclined, very eccentric, retrograde orbit. These data confirm t…
The recent availability of special purpose computers designed for calculating gravitational interactions of N-bodies at extremely high speed has provided the means to model globular clusters on a star-by-star basis for the first time. By endeavouring to make the N-body codes that operate on these machines as realistic as possible, the addition of stellar evolution being one example, much is being learnt about the interaction between the star cluster itself and the stars it contains. A fascinating aspect of this research is the ability to follow the orbits of individual stars in detail and to d…
Following an old idea of Fritz Zwicky, we make an attempt to establish a universal mass function for astronomical objects on all scales. The object classes considered are: solar system planets and small bodies, exoplanets, brown dwarfs, stars and stellar remnants, open and globular clusters, molecular clouds, galaxies, groups and clusters of galaxies. For comparison we also include CDM halos taken from numerical simulations. We show that the mass functions of individual object classes, when properly normalized, can indeed be concatenated to build a surprisingly continuous mass function of the …
We present the main sequence luminosity function of the tidally disrupted globular cluster Palomar 5 and its tidal tails. For this work we analyzed imaging data obtained with the Wide Field Camera at the INT (La Palma) and data from the Wide Field Imager at the MPG/ESO 2.2 m telescope at La Silla down to a limiting magnitude of approximately 24.5 mag in B. Our results indicate that preferentially fainter stars were removed from the cluster so that the LF of the cluster's main body exhibits a significant degree of flattening compared to other GCs. This is attributed to its advanced dynamical ev…
We find a deficiency of binary stars moving on strongly retrograde Galactic orbits. No binary deficiencies are seen for U or W velocities, however. From theoretical analyses, we rule out preferential disruption of pre-existing binary stars due to encounters with massive perturbers. We also rule out globular clusters as the source of the effect since prograde motions are more likely to create such an effect. We search for star streams and find one possible candidate, but it is not on a retrograde orbit and probably represents the remains of a cluster that has passed too near the Galactic center…
Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet (UV) images of nine starburst galaxies reveal them to be highly irregular, even after excluding compact sources (clusters and resolved stars). Most (7/9) are found to have a similar intrinsic effective surface brightnesses, suggesting that a negative feedback mechanism is setting an upper limit to the star formation rate per unit area. All starbursts in our sample contain UV bright star clusters indicating that cluster formation is an important mode of star formation in starbursts. On average about 20% of the UV luminosity comes from these clusters. The brigh…
We derive analytical expressions for the change in the orbital eccentricity of a binary following a distant encounter with a third star on a hyperbolic or parabolic orbit. To establish the accuracy of these expressions, we present detailed comparisons with the results of direct numerical integrations of the equations of motion for the three bodies. We treat with particular care the difficult case of a binary with zero initial eccentricity. In this case, we show that the eccentricity $δe$ induced by the encounter declines in general as a power-law, $δe\propto (a/\rp)^{5/2}$, where $a$ is the bi…
We have obtained deep BVI CCD photometry of Phoenix, a galaxy considered a transition case between dwarf spheroidal and dwarf irregular galaxies. A comparison of our data with the RGBs of Galactic globular clusters gives a mean metal abundance [Fe/H] = -1.81+/-0.10 dex. The presence of an intrinsic color dispersion in the upper red RGB suggests an abundance range of about 0.5 dex, although a range in age may also affect the RGB width. For the first time, a HB has been revealed at V~23.8. The HB is predominantly red yet moderately extended to the blue, which indicates the presence of a signific…
The luminosity functions (LFs) of star cluster systems (i.e. the number of clusters per luminosity interval) are vital diagnostics to probe the conditions of star cluster formation. Early studies have revealed a clear dichotomy between old globular clusters and young clusters, with the former characterised by Gaussian-shaped LFs, and the latter following a power law. Recently, this view was challenged by studies of galaxy merger remnants and post-starburst galaxies. In this paper we re-evaluate the young ($\lta$ few hundreds of Myrs, with the majority $\lta$ few tens of Myrs) star cluster syst…
The reionization of the Universe has profound effects on the way galaxies form and on their observed properties at later times. Of particular importance is the relative timing of the reionization history of a region and its halo assembly history, which can affect the nature of the first stars formed in that region, the properties and radial distribution of its stellar halo, globular cluster population and its satellite galaxies. We distinguish two basic cases for the reionization of a halo - internal reionization, whereby the stars forming in situ reionize their host galaxy, and external reion…
