Does negative refraction make a perfect lens?

A discussion of a question, studied earlier by V.Veselago in 1967 and by J. Pendry in 2000, is given. The question is: can a slab of the material with negative refraction make a perfect lens? Pendry's conclusion was: yes, it can. Our conclusion is: no, in practice it cannot, because of the fluctuations of the refraction coefficient of the slab. Resolution ability of linear isoplanatic optical instruments is discussed.

Perfect antireflection via negative refraction

We suggest a geometrical framework to discuss the action of slabs of negatively refracting materials. We show that these slabs generate the same orbits as normal materials, but traced out in opposite directions. This property allows us to confirm that the action of any lossless multilayer can be optically cancelled by putting it together with the multilayer constructed as the inverted mirror image, with $ε$ and $μ$ reversed in sign.

Flat lens imaging does not need negative refraction

In a recent communication, Parimi et al. (Nature 426, 404 (2003)) reported the experimental results on imaging by a flat lens made of photonic crystals. They attributed the observed focusing to the negative refraction expected for the Left-Handed-Materials (LHMs). Here we demonstrate that the experimental observation is irrelevant to the negative refraction of LHMs. Rather, the phenomenon is a natural result of the anisotropic scattering by an array of scatterers.

Negative Refraction and Subwavelength Lensing in a Polaritonic Crystal

We show that a two-dimensional polaritonic crystal, made of metallic rods that support well defined plasmon oscillations, can act in a narrow frequency range as a medium in which a negative refraction and subwavelength lensing can occur. We show that surface modes are excited on the surface of the lens, and that they facilitate restoration of the evanescent waves, which carry the subwavelength image information. The problem of a perfect lens made of a slab with negative refraction

The problem of the principal existence of the perfect lens and superlensing is discussed. We have demonstrated that in the case of the virtual focus the idea of perfect lens based upon amplification of evanescent waves as proposed by Pendry is perfectly right unlike the case of the real foci. We think that some experimental results claiming superlensing can be explained in terms of the proposed theory for the case when the virtual focus is inside the lens but very close to the rear face of it.

Time Driven Subwavelength Focusing with Negative Refraction

We discuss and clarify some misleading statements appeared in a recent article on negative refraction in metamaterials. Perfect lensing with phase conjugating surfaces: Towards practical realization

It is theoretically known that a pair of phase conjugating surfaces can function as a perfect lens, focusing propagating waves and enhancing evanescent waves. Birefringent left-handed metamaterials and perfect lenses

We describe the properties of birefringent left-handed metamaterials and introduce the concept of a birefringent perfect lens. Controlling electron flow in anisotropic Dirac materials heterojunctions: a super-diverging lens

Ballistic heterojunctions of Dirac materials offer the opportunity of exploring optics-like phenomena in electronic systems. Anti-mirror effect: A perfect lens brings a brighter feature

In this letter, we show that a perfect lens can be employed to make multiple objects appear like only one in the far field, leading to a new concept of illusion optics. Numerical simulations are performed to verify the functionalities for both passive and active objects. A Perfect Lens for Ballistic Electrons: A Kane's Model

The analogy between electromagnetic waves and ballistic electrons within the Kane's model is developed and subsequently applied to a theoretical description of a quantum version of a metamaterial planar lens. Restrictions imposed on the perfect lens and the poor man's lens by available semiconductor band structures are discussed. A realistic implementation is proposed for the quantum poor man's lens, which uses specific properties of the HgTe compound. The properties of the lens are presented on the basis of a calculated transmission of oblique electrons through the lens structure.

The planar perfect lens: physical requirements and possible alternative realizations

Several alternative possibilities of how to create an electromagnetic device being able to reconstruct near-field distribution of a source with sub-wavelength resolution (so-called perfect lens) are considered. It is shown that there is a variety of such means not involving double-negative (left-handed, or Veselago) materials or periodical backward-wave structures. It is demonstrated that devices working in a similar manner can be constructed using planar grids or material sheets imposing necessary boundary conditions at two parallel planes in air.

Tilted resonators in a triangular elastic lattice: chirality, Bloch waves and negative refraction

We consider a vibrating triangular mass-truss lattice whose unit cell contains a resonator of a triangular shape. The resonators are connected to the triangular lattice by trusses. Each resonator is tilted, i.e. it is rotated with respect to the triangular lattice's unit cell through an angle $\vartheta_0$. This geometrical parameter is responsible for the emergence of a resonant mode in the Bloch spectrum for elastic waves and strongly affects the dispersive properties of the lattice.
