We report the identification of a source coincident with the position of the nearby type II-P supernova (SN) 2008bk in high quality optical and near-infrared pre-explosion images from the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT). The SN position in the optical and near-infrared pre-explosion images is identified to within about +-70 and +-40 mas, respectively, using post-explosion Ks-band images obtained with the NAOS CONICA adaptive optics system on the VLT. The pre-explosion source detected in four different bands is precisely coincident with SN 2008bk and is consistent with being dominated by a single point source. We determine the nature of the point source using the STARS stellar evolutionary models and find that its colours and luminosity are consistent with the source being a red supergiant progenitor of SN 2008bk with an initial mass of 8.5 +- 1.0 Msun.
Type IIP (plateau) supernovae are thought to come from stars with initial mass about 8-25 solar masses that end their lives as red supergiants. The expected stellar end points can be found from evolutionary calculations and the corresponding mass loss properties at this point can be estimated from typical values for Galactic stars. The mass loss densities of observed supernovae can be estimated from observations of the thermal X-ray and radio synchrotron emission that result from the interaction of the supernova with the surrounding wind. Type IIP supernovae are expected to have energy-conserv…
Evolutionary effects with redshift of core collapse supernovae and their application to cosmology have been studied based on an extensive grid of stellar models between 13 and 25 Mo, and their light curves after the explosion. With decreasing metallicity Z and increasing mass, progenitors tend to explode as compact Blue Supergiants (BSG) and produce subluminous supernovae which are about 1.5 mag. dimmer compared to 'normal' SNeII with Red Supergiant (RSG) progenitors. Progenitors with small masses tend to explode as RSGs even with low Z. The consequences are obvious for probing the chemical ev…
The origin of low-luminosity Type IIP supernovae is unclear: they have been proposed to originate either from massive (about 25 Msun) or low-mass (about 9 Msun) stars. We wish to determine parameters of the low-luminosity Type IIP supernova 2003Z, to estimate a mass-loss rate of the presupernova, and to recover a progenitor mass. We compute the hydrodynamic models of the supernova to describe the light curves and the observed expansion velocities. The wind density of the presupernova is estimated using a thin shell model for the interaction with circumstellar matter. We estimate an ejecta mass…
We present multi-object spectroscopy of young, massive stars in the Local Group galaxy IC 1613. We provide the spectral classification and a detailed spectral catalog for 54 OBA stars in this galaxy. The majority of the photometrically selected sample is composed of B- and A-type supergiants. The remaining stars include early O-type dwarfs and the only Wolf-Rayet star known in this galaxy. Among the early B stars we have serendipitously uncovered 6 Be stars, the largest spectroscopically confirmed sample of this class of objects beyond the Magellanic Clouds. We measure chemical abundances for …
We have obtained multi-object spectroscopy of luminous blue supergiants in NGC 3109, a galaxy at the periphery of the Local Group at ~1.3 Mpc. We present a detailed catalog including finding charts, V and I magnitudes, spectral classifications, and stellar radial velocities. The radial velocities are seen to trace the rotation curves obtained from studies of the HI gas. From quantitative analysis of eight B-type supergiants we find a mean oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H) = 7.76 +/-0.07 (1-sigma systematic uncertainty), with a median result of 7.8. Given its distance, we highlight NGC 3109 as th…
We present the first spectro-interferometric observations of the circumstellar envelope (CSE) of a B[e] supergiant (CPD -57 2874), performed with the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) using the beam-combiner instruments AMBER (near-IR interferometry with three 8.3 m Unit Telescopes or UTs) and MIDI (mid-IR interferometry with two UTs). Our observations of the CSE are well fitted by an elliptical Gaussian model with FWHM diameters varying linearly with wavelength. Typical diameters measured are $\simeq1.8\times3.4$ mas or $\simeq4.5\times8.5$ AU (adopting a distance of 2.5 kpc) at $2.2…
We have undertaken quantitative analysis of four LMC and SMC O4--9.7 extreme supergiants using far-ultraviolet FUSE, ultraviolet IUE/HSTand optical VLT UVES spectroscopy. Extended, non-LTE model atmospheres that allow for the consistent treatment of line blanketing are used to analyse wind & photospheric spectral features simultaneously. Using Halpha to constrain dM/dt, HeI-II photospheric lines reveal T_eff's which are systematically (5-7.5kK) & substantially (15-20%) lower than previously derived from unblanketed, plane-parallel, non-LTE photospheric studies. We have confidence in these revi…
As part of the Araucaria Project, we present the first spectral catalog of supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy WLM. In assigning a spectral classification to these stars we accounted for the low metal content of WLM relative to the galactic standards used in the MK process, by using classification criteria developed for B and A supergiants contained in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Our spectral catalog shows that our higher S/N spectroscopic sample of 19 objects contains at least 6 early-B (B0-B5) supergiants and 6 late-B and early-A (B8-A2) stars of luminosity class betwe…
The paper investigates the milli-arcsecond scale structure of the present-day mass-loss of the post-Red Supergiant IRC+10420. We use three telescopes of the VLT Interferometer in combination with the AMBER near-infrared beam combiner to measure spectrally dispersed correlated fluxes in the K-band around the Br gamma transition. The resulting visibilities are compared to the predicted visibilities of emission structures with various simple models in order to infer the size of the observed emission region. The Br gamma line is resolved by VLTI+AMBER on all three baselines, with the maximum proje…
We present optical and infrared (IR) observations of the type IIP SN2002hh from 3 to 397 days after explosion. The optical spectroscopic (4-397d) and photometric (3-278d) data are complemented by spectroscopic (137-381d) and photometric (137-314d) data acquired at IR wavelengths. This is the first time L-band spectra have ever been successfully obtained for a supernova at a distance beyond the Local Group. The VRI light curves in the first 40 days reveal SN2002hh to be a SN IIP (plateau) - the most common of all core-collapse supernovae. SN2002hh is one of the most highly extinguished supernov…
Spectroscopic analyses of 7 SMC B-type supergiants and 1 giant have been undertaken using high resolution optical data obtained on the VLT with UVES. FASTWIND, a non-LTE, spherical,line-blanketed model atmosphere code was used to derive atmospheric and wind parameters of these stars as well as their absolute abundances. The implications of these results for stellar evolution and line driven wind theory are discussed.
We propose new diagnostics for circumstellar interaction in Type IIP supernovae by the detection of high velocity (HV) absorption features in Halpha and He I 10830 A lines during the photospheric stage. To demonstrate the method, we compute the ionization and excitation of H and He in supernova ejecta taking into account time-dependent effects and X-ray irradiation. We find that the interaction with a typical red supergiant wind should result in the enhanced excitation of the outer layers of unshocked ejecta and the emergence of corresponding HV absorption, i.e. a depression in the blue absorp…
We have obtained VLT low-resolution (~5 A) multi-object spectroscopy in the 4,000-5,000 A spectral range of about 70 blue supergiant candidates in the Sculptor Group spiral galaxy NGC 300. We present a detailed spectral catalog containing identification, magnitudes, colors and spectral types. We employ synthetic spectra to determine metal abundances for two A0 supergiants of the sample. In agreement with the expectations, the star closer to the galactic center is found to be more metal rich than the object at a larger galactocentric distance. Using the Balmer Hbeta line profile we have estimat…
We present archive ESO VLT photometric and spectroscopic data of the Ultraluminous X-ray source NGC 1313 X-2. The superb quality of the VLT images reveals that two distinct objects, with R magnitudes 23.7 and 23.6, are visible inside the Chandra error box. The two objects, separated by 0.75 arcsec, were unresolved in our previous ESO 3.6 m+EFOSC image. We show that both are stars in NGC 1313, the first a B0-O9 main sequence star of ~20 Msun, while the second a G supergiant of ~10 Msun. Irrespectively of which of the two objects the actual counterpart is, this implies that NGC 1313 X-2 is a hig…
We present quantitative studies of 8 late O and early B-type supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds using far-ultraviolet FUSE, ultraviolet IUE/HST and optical VLT-UVES spectroscopy. Temperatures, mass-loss rates and CNO abundances are obtained using the non-LTE, spherical, line-blanketed model atmosphere code of Hillier & Miller (1998). We support recent results for lower temperatures of OB-type supergiants as a result of stellar winds and blanketing, which amounts to ~2000 K at B0 Ia. In general, H$α$ derived mass-loss rates are consistent with UV and far-UV spectroscopy, although from conside…
High-resolution UCLES/AAT spectra are presented for nine B-type supergiants in the SMC, chosen on the basis that they may show varying amounts of nuclear-synthetically processed material mixed to their surface. These spectra have been analysed using a new grid of approximately 12 000 non-LTE line blanketed {\sc tlusty} model atmospheres to estimate atmospheric parameters and chemical composition. The abundance estimates for O, Mg and Si are in excellent agreement with those deduced from other studies, whilst the low estimate for C may reflect the use of the \ion{C}{ii} doublet at 4267Å. The N …
We provide atmospheric parameters and rotational velocities of a large sample (~400) of O- and early B-type stars, analysed in a homogeneous and consistent manner, for use in constraining theoretical models. Comparison of the rotational velocities with evolutionary tracks suggest that the end of core hydrogen burning occurs later than currently predicted. We also show that the large number of the luminous blue supergiants observed in the fields are unlikely to have directly evolved from main-sequence massive O-type stars as neither their low rotational velocities or position on the H-R diagram…
We present N-band spectro-interferometric observations of the red supergiant WOH G64 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using MIDI at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI). The location of WOH G64 on the H-R diagram based on the previously estimated luminosities is in serious disagreement with the current stellar evolution theory. The dust envelope around WOH G64 has been spatially resolved with a baseline of ~60 m--the first MIDI observations to resolve an individual stellar source in an extragalactic system. The observed N-band visibilities show a slight decrease from 8 to 10 micro…
We present an analysis of high resolution VLT-FLAMES spectra of 61 B-type stars with relatively narrow-lined spectra located in 4 fields centered on the Milky Way clusters; NGC3293 & NGC4755 and the Large and Small Magellanic cloud clusters; NGC2004 and NGC330. For each object a quantitative analysis was carried out using the non-LTE model atmosphere code TLUSTY; resulting in the determination of their atmospheric parameters and photospheric abundances of the dominant metal species (C, N, O, Mg, Si, Fe). The results are discussed in relation to our earlier work on 3 younger clusters in these g…
The study of the stars that explode as supernovae used to be a forensic study, working backwards from the remnants of the star. This changed in 1987 when the first progenitor star was identified in pre-explosion images. Currently there are 8 detected progenitors with another 21 non-detections, for which only a limit on the pre-explosion luminosity can be placed. This new avenue of supernova research has led to many interesting conclusions, most importantly that the progenitors of the most common supernovae, type IIP, are red supergiants as theory has long predicted. However no progenitors have…
[Abridged] We have studied the optical spectra of 28 O- and early B-type stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud, 22 of which are associated with the young star-forming region N11. Stellar parameters are determined using an automated fitting method, combining the stellar atmosphere code FASTWIND with the genetic-algorithm optimisation routine PIKAIA. Results for stars in the LH9 and LH10 associations of N11 are consistent with a sequential star formation scenario, in which activity in LH9 triggered the formation of LH10. Our sample contains four stars of spectral type O2, of which the hottest is f…
