The young $σ$-Orionis cluster is an important location for understanding the formation and evolution of stars, brown dwarfs, and planetary-mass objects. Its metallicity, although being a fundamental parameter, has not been well determined yet. We present the first determination of the metallicity of nine young late-type stars in $σ$-Orionis. Using the optical and near-infrared broadband photometry available in the literature we derive the effective temperatures for these nine cluster stars, which lie in the interval 4300--6500 K (1--3 \Msuno). These parameters are employed to compute a grid of synthetic spectra based on the code MOOG and Kurucz model atmospheres. We employ a $χ^2$-minimization procedure to derive the stellar surface gravity and atmospheric abundances of Al, Ca, Si, Fe, Ni and Li, using multi-object optical spectroscopy taken with WYFFOS+AF2 at at the William Herschel Telescope ($λ/δλ\sim7500$). The average metallicity of the $σ$-Orionis cluster is [Fe/H] $ = -0.02\pm0.09\pm0.13$ (random and systematic errors). The abundances of the other elements, except lithium, seem to be consistent with solar values. Lithium abundances are in agreement with the "cosmic" $^7$Li abundance, except for two stars which show a $\log ε(\mathrm{Li})$ in the range 3.6--3.7 (although almost consistent within the error bars). There are also other two stars with $\log ε(\mathrm{Li})\sim 2.75$. We derived an average radial velocity of the $σ$-Orionis cluster of $28\pm4$km/s. The $σ$-Orionis metallicity is roughly solar.
We present XMM-Newton observations of the O supergiant Zeta Orionis (O9.7 Ib). The spectra are rich in emission lines over a wide range of ionization stages. The RGS-spectra show for the first time lines of low ion stages such as C VI, N VI, N VII, and O VII. The line profiles are symmetric and rather broad (FWHM approximately 1500 km/s) and show only a slight blue shift. With the XMM-epic spectrometer several high ions are detected in this star for the first time including Ar XVII and S XV. Simultaneous multi-temperature fits and DEM-modeling were applied to the RGS and EPIC spectra to obtain…
We combine UV spectra obtained with the HST/GHRS echelle, IMAPS, and Copernicus to study the abundances and physical conditions in the predominantly ionized gas seen at high (-105 to -65 km/s) and intermediate velocities (-60 to -10 km/s) toward zeta Ori. We have high resolution (FWHM ~ 3.3-4.5 km/s) and/or high S/N spectra for at least two significant ions of C, N, Al, Si, S, and Fe -- enabling accurate estimates for both the total N(H II) and the elemental depletions. C, N, and S have essentially solar relative abundances; Al, Si, and Fe appear to be depleted by about 0.8, 0.3-0.4, and 0.95 …
We have obtained low resolution optical spectra of 15 isolated planetary mass objects (IPMOs) in the sigma Orionis cluster, and derived spectral types by comparison with nearby M and L dwarfs. The spectral types are in the range late M - mid L, in agreement with our expectations based on colors and magnitudes for bona fide members. Therefore, most of these objects have masses below the deuterium burning limit. About 2/3 show H(alpha) in emission at our spectral resolution. From our spectroscopic and photometric data, we infer that three IPMOs in this sample may be binaries with components of s…
We present new Keck II NIRSPEC high-spectral resolution 2 um echelle observations of the young eruptive variable star V1647 Orionis. This star went into outburst in late 2003 and faded to its pre-outburst brightness after approximately 26 months. V1647 Orionis is the illuminating star of McNeil's Nebula and is located near M 78 in the Lynds 1630 dark cloud. Our spectra have a resolving power of approximately 18,000 and allow us to study in detail the weak absorption features present on the strong near-IR veiled continuum. An analysis of the echelle orders containing Mg I (2.1066 um) and Al I (…
We report on four Chandra grating observations of the oblique magnetic rotator theta^1 Ori C (O5.5 V) covering a wide range of viewing angles with respect to the star's 1060 G dipole magnetic field. We employ line-width and centroid analyses to study the dynamics of the X-ray emitting plasma in the circumstellar environment, as well as line-ratio diagnostics to constrain the spatial location, and global spectral modeling to constrain the temperature distribution and abundances of the very hot plasma. We investigate these diagnostics as a function of viewing angle and analyze them in conjunctio…
We present intermediate- and low-resolution optical spectra around Halpha and LiI 6708 A for a sample of 25 low mass stars and 2 brown dwarfs with confirmed membership in the pre-main sequence stellar sigma Orionis cluster. Our observations are intended to investigate the age of the cluster. The spectral types derived for our target sample are found to be in the range K6-M8.5, which corresponds to a mass interval of roughly 1.2-0.02 Msun on the basis of state-of-the-art evolutionary models. Radial velocities (except for one object) are found to be consistent with membership in the Orion comple…
X-ray line profile analysis has proved to be the most direct diagnostic of the kinematics and spatial distribution of the very hot plasma around O stars. In this paper we apply several analysis techniques to the emission lines in the Chandra HETGS spectrum of the late-O supergiant zeta Ori (O9.7 Ib), including the fitting of a simple line-profile model. We show that there is distinct evidence for blue shifts and profile asymmetry, as well as broadening in the X-ray emission lines of zeta Ori. These are the observational hallmarks of a wind-shock X-ray source, and the results for zeta Ori are v…
Because of the intense brightness of the OB-type multiple star system sigma Ori, the low-mass stellar and substellar populations close to the centre of the very young sigma Orionis cluster is poorly know. I present an IJHKs survey in the cluster centre, able to detect from the massive early-type stars down to cluster members below the deuterium burning mass limit. The near-infrared and optical data have been complemented with X-ray imaging. Ten objects have been found for the first time to display high-energy emission. Previously known stars with clear spectroscopic youth indicators and/or X-r…
By using the ALFA adaptive optics system at the 3.6m telescope of the Calar Alto Observatory we detected a faint red star in the apparent vicinity of FU Ori, the prototype of the FUor outburst stars. Independent confirmation of the detection is obtained from archival PUEO/CFHT images. The separation between the companion candidate and FU Ori is 0."50 and their brightness contrast is around 4 magnitudes. We discuss the possible nature of the newly detected star based on near-infrared photometry and its proper motion relative to FU Ori. The photometric data are consistent with a nearby late-type…
We present new optical, near-IR, and mid-IR observations of the young eruptive variable star V1647 Orionis that went into outburst in late 2004 for approximately two years. Our observations were taken one year after the star had faded to its pre-outburst optical brightness and show that V1647Ori is still actively accreting circumstellar material. We compare and contrast these data with existing observations of the source from both pre-outburst and outburst phases. From near-IR spectroscopy we identify photospheric absorption features for the first time that allow us to constrain the classifica…
The mid- to far-infrared emission of the outbursting FU Orionis objects has been attributed either to a flared outer disk or to an infalling envelope. We revisit this issue using detailed radiative transfer calculations to model the recent, high signal-to-noise data from the IRS instrument on the {Spitzer Space Telescope}. In the case of FU Ori, we find that a physically-plausible flared disk irradiated by the central accretion disk matches the observations. Building on our previous work, our accretion disk model with outer disk irradiation by the inner disk reproduces the spectral energy dist…
We report the discovery of large-amplitude, periodic X-ray emission from the O7 V star theta^1 Orionis C, the central star of the Orion Nebula. Ten ROSAT HRI snapshots of the Trapezium cluster taken over the course of 21 days show that the count rate of theta^1 Ori C varies from 0.26 to 0.41 counts/s with a clear 15-day period. The soft X-ray variations have the same phase and period as H-alpha and He II 4686 variations reported by Stahl et al., and are in anti-phase with the C IV and Si IV ultraviolet absorption features. We consider five mechanisms which might explain the amplitude, phase, a…
Nearby young clusters are privileged places to study the star formation history. Over the last decade, the sigma-Orionis cluster has been a prime location for the study of young very low mass stars, substellar and isolated planetary mass objects and the determination of the initial mass function. To extend previous studies of this association to its core, we searched for ultracool members and new multiple systems within the 1.5'x1.5' central region of the cluster. We obtained deep multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) images of the core of the sigma-Orionis cluster with the prototype MCAO fac…
We present a CCD-based photometric survey covering 870 sq. arcmin in a young stellar cluster around the young multiple star sigma Orionis. Our survey limiting R, I, and Z magnitudes are 23.2, 21.8, and 21.0, respectively. From our colour-magnitude diagrams, we have selected 49 faint objects, which smoothly extrapolate the photometric sequence defined by more massive known members. Adopting the currently accepted age interval of 2-10 Myr for the Orion 1b association and considering recent evolutionary models, our objects may span a mass range from 0.1 down to 0.02 Msun, well within the substell…
In this paper we present the mass functions in the substellar regime of three young open clusters, IC 348, $σ$ Orionis and Pleiades, as derived using the data from the 2 Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) catalogue which has a limiting magnitude of K_s ~ 15, and the latest version of the Guide Star Catalogue (GSC) which has a limiting magnitude of F ~ 21 where F refers to the POSS II IIIa-F passband. Based on recent evolutionary models for low mass stars, we have formulated the selection criteria for stars with masses below 0.5 solar mass. Using a statistical approach to correct for the background …
Evidence is presented from numerical magneto-hydrodynamical simulations for the existence of magnetic activity in late-type giant stars. A red supergiant with stellar parameters similar to that of Betelgeuse (alpha Orionis) is modeled as a "star-in-a-box" with the high-order "Pencil Code". Both linear kinematic and non-linear saturated dynamo action are found: the non-linear magnetic field saturates at a super-equipartition value (a factor two above equipartition yielding surface fields with strengths on the order of 500 Gauss), while in the linear regime two different modes of dynamo action a…
Models of galactic chemical evolution (CEMs) show that the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and other assumptions regarding star formation affect the resultant abundance gradients in models of late-type galaxies. Furthermore, intermediate mass (IM) stars undeniably play an important role in the buildup of nitrogen abundances in galaxies. Here I specifically discuss the nitrogen contribution from IM/AGB stars and how it affects the N/O-gradient. For this purpose I have modelled the chemical evolution of a few nearby disc galaxies using different IMFs and star formation prescript…
We have performed abundance analysis of two slowly rotating, late A-type stars, HD 32115 (HR 1613) and HD 37594 (HR 1940), based on obtained echelle spectra covering the spectral range 4000-9850 AAngstrom. These spectra allowed us to identify an extensive line list for 31 chemical elements, the most complete to date for A-type stars. Two approaches to abundance analysis were used, namely a ``manual'' (interactive) and a semi-automatic procedure for comparison of synthetic and observed spectra and equivalent widths. For some elements non-LTE (NLTE) calculations were carried out and the correspo…
We propose that the ``isolated'' planetary mass objects observed by Zapatero Osorio et al in the $σ$ Orionis cluster might actually be in orbit around invisible stellar mass companions such as mirror stars. Mirror matter is expected to exist if parity is an unbroken symmetry of nature. Future observations can test this idea by looking for a periodic Doppler shift in the radiation emitted by the planets. The fact that the observations show an inverse dependence between the abundance of the these objects and their mass may argue in favour of the mirror matter hypothesis.
I present the results of a programme to monitor the strengths of the Li I 6708A, K I 7699A and chromospheric Halpha lines in a group of cool Pleiades stars. Consistent instrumentation and analysis techniques are used to show that there is no Li I variability on timescales of 1 year that could possibly account for the apparent spread in Li abundances seen in Pleiades stars between effective temperatures of 4800-5200K. Comparison with published data reveals tentative evidence for variability on 10 year timescales, but at a very low level. The lack of chromospheric activity variability above leve…
We examine recent claims that the T-type brown dwarf S Ori 053810.1-023626 (S Ori 70) is a spectroscopically verified low mass (3$^{+5}_{-1}$ M$_{Jup}$) member of the 1--8 Myr $σ$ Orionis cluster. Comparative arguments by Mart{í}n & Zapatero Osorio asserting that S Ori 70 exhibits low surface gravity spectral features indicative of youth and low mass are invalidated by the fact that their comparison object was not the field T dwarf 2MASS 0559$-$1404 but rather a nearby background star. Instead, we find that the 1--2.5 $\micron$ spectra of S Ori 70 are well-matched to older (age $\sim$ few Gyr)…
We present ground-based SpectroCam-10 mid-infrared, MMT optical, and Spitzer Space Telescope IRS mid-infrared spectra taken 7.62, 18.75, and 19.38 years respectively after the outburst of the old classical nova QU Vulpeculae (Nova Vul 1984 #2). The spectra of the ejecta are dominated by forbidden line emission from neon and oxygen. Our analysis shows that neon was, at the first and last epochs respectively, more than 76 and 168 times overabundant by number with respect to hydrogen compared to the solar value. These high lower limits to the neon abundance confirm that QU Vul involved a thermonu…
The properties of 322 intermediate-mass late-G giants (comprising 10 planet-host stars) selected as the targets of Okayama Planet Search Program, many of which are red-clump giants, were comprehensively investigated by establishing their various stellar parameters (atmospheric parameters including turbulent velocity fields, metallicity, luminosity, mass, age, projected rotational velocity, etc.), and their photospheric chemical abundances for 17 elements, in order to study their mutual dependence, connection with the existence of planets, and possible evolution-related characteristics. The met…
Context: Deep photometric surveys for substellar objects in young clusters and for high-redshift quasars are affected by contaminant sources at different heliocentric distances. If not correctly taken into account, the contamination may have a strong effect on the Initial Mass Function determination and on the identification of quasars. Aims: We calculate in detail the back- and foreground contamination by field dwarfs of very late spectral types (intermediate and late M, L and T) in deep surveys and provide the data and tools for the computation. Methods: Up-to-date models and data from the li…
Aims. We aim to provide observational constraints on diffusion models that predict peculiar chemical abundances in the atmospheres of Am stars. We also intend to check if chemical peculiarities and slow rotation can be explained by the presence of a weak magnetic field. Methods. We have obtained high resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of eight previously-classified Am stars, two normal A-type stars and one Blue Straggler, considered to be members of the Praesepe cluster. For all of these stars we have determined fundamental parameters and photospheric abundances for a large number …
We make new Non-LTE calculations to deduce abundances of neon from visible-region echelle spectra of selected Ne I lines in 7 normal stars and 20 HgMn stars. We find that the best strong blend-free Ne line which can be used at the lower end of the Teff range is 6402 A, although several other potentially useful Ne I lines are found in the red region of the spectra of these stars. The mean neon abundance in the normal stars (log A =8.10) is in excellent agreement with the standard abundance of neon (8.08). However, in HgMn stars, neon is almost universally underabundant, ranging from marginal de…
Non-local thermodynamical equilibrium (NLTE) line formation for neutral and singly-ionized calcium is considered through a range of spectral types when the Ca abundance varies from the solar value down to [Ca/H] = -5. Departures from LTE significantly affect the profiles of Ca I lines over the whole range of stellar parameters considered. However, at [Ca/H] >= -2, NLTE abundance correction of individual lines may be small in absolute value due to the different influence of NLTE effects on line wings and the line core. At lower Ca abundances, NLTE leads to systematically depleted total absorpti…
We discuss the relic abundance of massive long lived colored particles with mass of the order of 1 TeV. We first examine the case where the massive colored particles have the standard color only. Next we consider the "Quirk Model" suggested by M. Luty, in which the colored particles transform under an additional non-abelian gauge group with a scale much smaller than the particles' mass. In both cases, the relic abundance is reduced via a "late" hadronic annihilation stage. In the second case the relic Quirks bind to ordinary quarks forming fractional charged objects and also anomalous heavy is…
With the prime aim of better probing and understanding the intimate link between star formation activity and the presence of bars, a representative sample of 32 non-interacting late-type galaxies with well-determined bar properties has been selected. We show that all the galaxies displaying the highest current star forming activity have both strong and long bars. Conversely not all strong and long bars are intensively creating stars. Except for two cases, strong bars are in fact long as well. Numerical simulations allow to understand these observational facts as well as the connection between …
We report new statistical equilibrium calculations for Fe I and Fe II in the atmosphere of Late-Type stars. We used atomic models for Fe I and Fe II having respectively 256 and 190 levels, as well as 2117 and 3443 radiative transitions. Photoionization cross-sections are from the Iron Project. These atomic models were used to investigate non-LTE effects in iron abundances of Late-Type stars with different atmospheric parameters. We found that most Fe I lines in metal-poor stars are formed in conditions far from LTE. We derived metallicity corrections of about 0.3 dex with respect to LTE values…
Comparisons between the predicted abundances of short-lived r-nuclides (107Pd, 129I, 182Hf, and 244Pu) in the interstellar medium (ISM) and the observed abundances in the early solar system (ESS) conclusively showed that these nuclides cannot simply be derived from galactic chemical evolution (GCE) if synthesized in a unique stellar environment. It was thus suggested that two di erent types of stars were responsible for the production of light and heavy r-nuclides. Here, new constraints on the 244Pu=238U production ratio are used in an open nonlinear GCE model. It is shown that the two r-proce…
A survey of Ne, O and Fe coronal abundances culled from the recent literature for about 60 late-type stars confirms that the Ne/O ratio of stellar outer atmospheres is about two times the value recently recommended by Asplund et al. The mean Ne/O remains flat from the most active stars down to at least intermediate activity levels (-5L_X/L_bol<-2), with some evidence for a decline toward the lowest activity levels sampled. The abundances surveyed are all based on emission measure distribution analyses and the mean Ne/O is about 0.1 dex lower than that found from line ratios in the seminal stud…
We consider the roles of two widely invoked mechanisms for the metallicity-luminosity correlation among late-type galaxies: higher astration level and decreasing efficiency of heavy-element loss with increasing luminosity. We find that both mechanisms contribute about equally to the range in oxygen abundance between low (logL_B = 8) and high (logL_B = 10.5) luminosity galaxies. We also consider the transition from spirals to irregulars, finding that both the oxygen abundance deficiency (indicating the degree of mass exchange between a galaxy and its environment) and the gas fraction vary smoot…
We review the observed properties of extremely hot hydrogen-deficient post-AGB stars of spectral type [WC] and PG1159. Their H-deficiency is probably caused by a (very) late helium-shell flash or a AGB final thermal pulse, laying bare interior stellar regions which are usually kept hidden below the hydrogen envelope. Thus, the photospheric element abundances of these stars allow to draw conclusions about details of nuclear burning and mixing processes in the precursor AGB stars. We summarize the state-of-the-art of stellar evolution models which simulate AGB evolution and the occurrence of a l…
Here we describe some of our latest results from measuring detailed abundances in Local Group dwarf galaxies with VLT. Combining spectroscopic abundances with Colour-Magnitude diagrams allows the effective measurement of detailed chemical evolution with time in these galaxies. Although there are not yet significant numbers of individual stars observed in local group dwarf galaxies the uniformity of the abundance patterns of the majority of stars in galaxies with very different star formation histories must hint at a general properties of all star formation in these small systems.
I describe recent progress in terms of 3D hydrodynamical model atmospheres and 3D line formation and their applications to stellar abundance analyses of late-type stars. Such 3D studies remove the free parameters inherent in classical 1D investigations (mixing length parameters, macro- and microturbulence) yet are highly successful in reproducing a large arsenal of observational constraints such as detailed line shapes and asymmetries. Their potential for abundance analyses is illustrated by discussing the derived oxygen abundances in the Sun and in metal-poor stars, where they seem to resolve…
We present the first in a series of papers that attempt to investigate the relation between binarity, magnetic activity, and chemical surface abundances of cool stars. In the current paper, we lay out and test two abundance analysis methods and apply them to two well-known, active, single stars, HD 27536 (G8IV-III) and HD 216803 (K5V), presenting photospheric fundamental parameters and abundances of Li, Al, Ca, Si, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Fe, Co and Ni. The abundances from the two methods agree within the errors for all elements except calcium in \hdeen, which means that either method yields the same f…
We investigate the possibility of accounting for the currently inferred primordial abundances of D, 3He, 4He, and 7Li by big bang nucleosynthesis in the presence of baryon density inhomogeneities plus the effects of late-decaying massive particles (X), and we explore the allowed range of baryonic fraction of the closure density Omega_b in such context. We find that, depending on the parameters of this composite model (characteristic size and density contrast of the inhomogeneities; mass-density, lifetime, and effective baryon number in the decay of the X-particles), values as high as Ω_{b}h_{5…
We report on the finding of the strongest H(alpha) emission -pseudoequivalent width of 705 Angstrom- known so far in a young, late type dwarf. This object, named as SOri71, is a substellar candidate member of the 1-8 Myr star cluster sigma Orionis. Due to its overluminous location in color-magnitude diagrams, SOri71 might be younger than other cluster members, or a binary of similar components. Its mass is in the range 0.021-0.012 M(sun), depending on evolutionary models and possible binarity. The broad H(alpha) line of SOri71 appears asymmetric, indicative of high velocity mass motions in the…
We present a mosaic of five XMM-Newton observations of the nearby ($z=0.0594$) merging galaxy cluster Abell 3266. We use the spectro-imaging capabilities of \xmm to build precise (projected) temperature, entropy, pressure and Fe abundance maps. The temperature map exhibits a curved, large-scale hot region, associated with elevated entropy levels, very similar to that foreseen in numerical simulations. The pressure distribution is disturbed in the central region but is remarkably regular on large scales. The Fe abundance map indicates that metals are inhomogeneously distributed across the clust…
Two evolutionary scenarios are proposed for the formation of extreme helium stars: a post-AGB star suffering from a late thermal pulse, or the merger of two white dwarfs. An identification of the evolutionary channel for individual objects has to rely on surface abundances. We present preliminary results from a non-LTE analysis of CNO, Mg and S for two unique objects, V652 Her and HD144941. Non-LTE abundance corrections for these elements range from negligible values to ~0.7 dex. Non-LTE effects typically lead to systematic shifts in the abundances relative to LTE and reduce the uncertainties.
According to previous spectral analyses of Wolf-Rayet type central stars, late [WC] subtypes show systematically higher carbon-to-helium abundance ratios than early [WC] subtypes. If this were true, it would rule out that these stars form an evolutionary sequence. However, due to the different parameter domains and diagnostic lines, one might suspect systematic errors being the source of this discrepancy. In an ongoing project we are therefore checking the [WC] analyses by means of the last generation of non-LTE models for expanding stellar atmospheres which account for line-blanketing and win…
Li abundances are derived for a sample of bulgelike stars with isochronal ages of 10-11 Gyr. These stars have orbits with pericentric distances, Rp, as small as 2-3 kpc and Zmax < 1 kpc. The sample comprises G and K dwarf stars in the metallicity range -0.80<[Fe/H]< +0.40. Few data of Li abundances in old turn-off stars (> 4.5 Gyr) within the present metallicity range are available. M67 (4.7 Gyr) and NGC 188 (6 Gyr) are the oldest studied metal-rich open clusters with late-type stars. Li abundances have also been studied for few samples of old metal-rich field stars. In the present work a high…
We use broadband photometry and low-resolution spectra of a complete sample of late-K and M dwarfs brighter than I=22 in three fields at high galactic latitude to study issues relating to galactic structure and large scale abundance gradients in the Galaxy. The observed starcounts in each field are a good match to the predictions of models based on deep starcount data in other intermediate-latitude fields, and these models identify the late-type stars as members of the Galactic disk. Abundances for these late type stars are estimated via narrowband indices that measure the strength of the TiO …
Lithium abundances determined by spectral synthesis from both the 6708A resonance line and the 6104 subordinate line are reported for 11 late-type Pleiades stars, including spectra previously analysed by Russell (1996). We report a 0.7 dex scatter in the abundances from 6708A, and a scatter at least as large from the 6104A line. We find a reasonable correllation between the 6104A and 6708A Li abundances, although four stars have 6104A-determined abundances which are significantly larger than the 6708-determined values, by up to 0.5 dex, suggesting problems with the homogeneous, one-dimensional…
We present quantitative studies of 8 late O and early B-type supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds using far-ultraviolet FUSE, ultraviolet IUE/HST and optical VLT-UVES spectroscopy. Temperatures, mass-loss rates and CNO abundances are obtained using the non-LTE, spherical, line-blanketed model atmosphere code of Hillier & Miller (1998). We support recent results for lower temperatures of OB-type supergiants as a result of stellar winds and blanketing, which amounts to ~2000 K at B0 Ia. In general, H$α$ derived mass-loss rates are consistent with UV and far-UV spectroscopy, although from conside…
The hydrogen-deficiency in extremely hot post-AGB stars of spectral class PG1159 is probably caused by a (very) late helium-shell flash or a AGB final thermal pulse that consumes the hydrogen envelope, exposing the usually-hidden intershell region. Thus, the photospheric elemental abundances of these stars allow to draw conclusions about details of nuclear burning and mixing processes in the precursor AGB stars. We compare predicted elemental abundances to those determined by quantitative spectral analyses performed with advanced non-LTE model atmospheres. A good qualitative and quantitative a…
We investigate the modifications to predictions for the abundances of light elements from standard Big-Bang nucleosynthesis when exotic late-decaying particles with lifetimes exceeding ~1 sec are prominent in the early Universe. Utilising a model-independent analysis of the properties of these long-lived particles, we identify the parameter space associated with models that are consistent with all observational data and hence resolve the much discussed discrepancies between observations and theoretical predictions for the abundances of Li^7 and Li^6.
We study the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) scenario with late-decaying exotic particles with lifetime longer than $\sim 1$ sec. With a late-decaying particle in the early universe, predictions of the standard BBN scenario can be significantly altered. Therefore, we derive constraints on its primordial abundance. We pay particular attention to hadronic decay modes of such particles. We see that the non-thermal production process of D, ${\rm ^{3}He}$ and ${\rm ^6Li}$ provides a stringent upper bound on the primordial abundance oflate-decaying particles with hadronic branching ratio.
