A model-independent global search for new physics has been performed at the CDF experiment. This search examines 399 final states, looking for discrepancies between observation and the standard model expectation in populations, kinematic shapes, bumps in mass distributions suggestive of new resonances and the tails of the summed transverse momentum distribution. This global search reveals no evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model in 2.0 fb^-1 of p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV.
We present results of recent searches for new physics using the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Presented are searches for Higgs -> gammagamma, as well as more general searches in gammagamma + X where X is missing Et, jets, charged leptons, b-quarks or extra photons. The CDF eegammagamma-mett candidate event is discussed along with estimates of the expected rates in the Standard Model. Other searches for SUSY, Higgs and Technicolor look for particles which decay to vector bosons and b-quarks.
We present the current status of the search for new physics at CDF, using integrated luminosity up to 3.2 fb-1. We cover searches for supersymmetry, extra dimensions, new heavy bosons, and generic dilepton resonances.
This poster, presented at the 2006 Duke Hadron Collider Symposium, presents the results from searches for large extra dimensions, as proposed by Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos and Dvali (ADD), and Randall-Sundrum (RS) model warped extra dimensions, at CDF.
A brief review of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model with photons using the CDF detector at the Tevatron is given here. These include searches for supersymmetry, extra dimensions, excited electrons and W/Z$+γ$ production, as well as anomalous photon production. Recent results from CDF Run II experiment is presented, but some results from Run I are also reviewed.
We present the latest CDF searches for the Standard Model Higgs boson with 1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy collisions produced at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data was collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity from 2 to 4.8 1/fb. To achieve maximal sensitivity, many channels are analyzed including final states from gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, and associated production with W and Z bosons.
We present results of searches for new physics in final states with photons at CDF in approximately 1 fb-1 of ppbar collisions at 1.96 TeV. We give an overview of the data-driven photon background estimation techniques used for the analyses. We report on a search for diphoton peaks and signature-based searches for diphoton+X, lepton+photon+X (X = electron, muon, missing transverse energy, photon) and ttbar+photon.
We propose a like-sign dilepton search for chargino-neutralino production in p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV, which complements the previously published trilepton search by the CDF detector using Fermilab Run I data. Monte Carlo predictions for the signal and background efficiencies indicate a significant increase in sensitivity to chargino-neutralino production compared to the traditional trilepton analysis alone.
The addition of the EMTiming system installed to provide the time measurements of the electromagnetic calorimeter signals has significantly increased the sensitivity of CDF to events with a photon and a missing energy. Here I review recent searches in this signature performed by CDF using data from proton-antiproton collisions at the center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. They provide new constraints on models with large extra dimensions and with gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking.
We present the results of a search for associated production of the lightest chargino and next-to-lightest neutralino using 1 fb$^{-1}$ of $\sqrt s$ = 1.96 TeV p$\rm \bar p$ data collected with the CDF detector at the Tevatron. We combine the results of several multi-lepton final states to set upper limits on the cross section times branching ratio for chargino-neutralino production as a function of the chargino mass.
Experimental results of a search for the Xi_(3/2)(1860) cascade pentaquark state in data collected with the CDF 2 Detector in Run II at the Tevatron are presented. No evidence for these states in the neutral Xi-pi+ and doubly charged Xi-pi- modes has been found. Preliminary upper limits on yields at 1862 MeV/c**2 relative to the well established resonance Xi*0(1530) are presented.
A search for long-lived charged massive particles in CDF's Run1b data sample is presented. The search looks for highly ionizing tracks which would result from slowly moving massive particles. We search for strongly produced particles using a stable color triplet quark as a reference model, and a separate search was performed for weakly produced particles using long-lived sleptons in Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking as a reference model. No excess over background was observed, and we derive limits on the cross-sections for production of these particles. Prospects for RunII are also discuss…
The decay Bs -> mu+mu- is very sensitive to contributions from new physics processes. Thus the Tevatron and LHC experiments are hunting for an observation of a Bs -> mu+mu- signal. In this article the updated search for Bs -> mu+mu- and B0 -> mu+mu- by the CDF experiment is presented. The CDF result was received with great interest because an excess over the background expectation is seen, although of modest statistical significance and still consistent with the prediction of a standard model signal and other experimental results.
We present a search for Randall-Sundrum (RS) gravitons decaying to diphotons or dielectrons or dimuons, performed with the CDF II detector and using up to 5.7 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The respective mass spectra are consistent with the ones expected by the standard model. For the RS-model parameter k/M_Pl=0.1, RS-gravitons with mass less than 1111 GeV/c^2 are excluded at 95% CL.
We report on the first results from the CDF experiment on search for physics beyond the Standard Model using data from the upgraded TeVatron collider running $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 1960 GeV. These first results, although obtained with a total integrated luminosity lower than the total integrated luminosity collected during Run I, are already competitive if not better, due to the increase in the center of mass energy and the improved detector capability.
We report the results of two signature-based searches for new physics using 1.9- 2.0 fb-1 of data collected at the CDF experiment. Both analyses look in events containing a photon, a b-tagged jet, and missing transverse energy. The first search requires an additional jet. The second search requires an extra electron or muon. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model prediction is observed. We also describe the "CES/CPR" method which is used to estimate the amount of mis-identified photons.
We present the results on the searches for the SM and the non-SM Higgs boson production in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using data corresponding to 300--700pb-1, we search for the Higgs boson in various production and decay channels. No signal is observed, therefore, we set upper limits on the production cross-section times branching fraction as a function of the Higgs boson mass.
Recently there has been revival of interest in exotic baryon spectroscopy triggered by experimental evidence for pentaquarks containing u,d,s and c-quarks. We report results of the searches for pentaquark states in decays to p K0S, Xi- pi+,- and D*- p performed at CDF detector using 220 pb-1 sample of pp= interactions at sqrt(s) of 1.96 TeV. No evidence for narrow resonances were found in either mode.
Results are presented on searches for standard model and non-standard model production of a Higgs boson in pbar-p collisions at sqrt{s}= 1.96 TeV with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using data corresponding to 2-3.6 1/fb of integrated luminosity, searches are performed in a number of different production and decay modes. No excess in data above that expected from backgrounds is observed; therefore, we set upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction as a function of the Higgs boson mass.
In this note we present the results of several searches for physics beyond the standard model. All final states use 2 inverse fb\of data produced at Tevatron in p-pbar collisions at 1.96 TeV and collected by the CDF Run II detector. None of the analysis is heavily optimized for any specific model. All signatures contain missing transverse energy in the final state and all, except for one, have at least one photon in the final state. Unfortunately, no interesting excesses of events over the SM prediction are observed in any final states, except may be for the last one.
We present recent results from CDF in the search for new phenomena appearing in the top quark samples. These results use data from proton-antiproton collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.96 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity ranging from 195 pb^-1 to 760 pb^-1. No deviations are observed from the Standard Model expectations, so upper limits on the size of possible new phenomena are set.
The chargino-neutralino production with subsequent leptonic decays is one of the most promising supersymmetry (SUSY) signatures at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider. We present the most recent results on the search for the three-lepton and missing-transverse-energy SUSY signature using 3.2 fb-1 of data collected with the CDF II detector. The results are interpreted within the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) scenario.
We present a search for the production of excited or exotic muons (mu*) via the reaction pbar + p -> mu* + mu -> mu gamma + mu using 371/pb of data collected with the Run II CDF detector. In this signature-based search, we look for a resonance in the mu-gamma mass spectrum. The data are compared to standard model and detector background expectations, and with predictions of excited muon production. We use these comparisons to set limits on the mu* mass and compositeness scale Lambda in the contact interaction and gauge-mediated models.
We present the current status of searches for physics beyond the Standard Model at the Tevatron 1.96-TeV proton-antiproton collider using data collected with the CDF experiment. We cover searches for supersymmetry, extra dimensions and new gauge bosons.
We present preliminary results on a search for squarks and gluinos in proton-antiproton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV and based on 1.1 fb-1 of data collected by the CDF detector in the Tevatron Run II. Events with multiple jets of hadrons and large missing transverse energy in the final state are studied within the framework of minimal supergravity and assuming R-parity conservation. No excess with respect to Standard Model predictions is observed and new limits on the gluino and squark masses are extracted.
We present results of a search for anomalous production of two photons together with an electron, muon, $τ$ lepton, missing transverse energy, or jets using $p\bar{p}$ collision data from 1.1-2.0 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). The event yields and kinematic distributions are examined for signs of new physics without favoring a specific model of new physics. The results are consistent with the standard model expectations. The search employs several new analysis techniques that significantly reduce instrumental backgrounds in channels wit…
We present recent results of searches for exotic photons at CDF II. In the first signature-based search, we search for anomalous production of two photons with additional energetic objects. The results are consistent with the standard model expectations. In the second analysis, we present a signature-based search for anomalous production of events containing a photon, two jets, of which at least one is identified as originating from a $b$ quark, and missing transverse energy. We find no indications of non-standard model phenomena. Finally, a search for a fermiophobic Higgs in the diphoton fina…
The Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) experiment performed the first measurement of the time-evolution of flavor-tagged B0s->J/psiphi decays, which probes mixing-induced CP-violation in the B0s sector. Any sizable deviation from zero of the phase beta_s, accessible through interference of the bbar\to cbar c sbar quark-level process accompanied or not by B0s-aB0s mixing, would be unambiguous indication of physics beyond the Standard Model. I report CDF results obtained in 1.35/fb, a recent extension to a larger dataset corresponding to 2.8/fb, and future projections.
We present a search for new physics in events with two high $p_T$ leptons of the same electric charge, using data with an integrated luminosity of 6.1 fb$^{-1}$. The observed data are consistent with standard model predictions. We set 95% C.L. lower limits on the mass of doubly-charged scalars decaying to like-sign dileptons, $m_{H^{\pm\pm}}> 190-245$ GeV/$c^2$, depending on the decay mode and coupling.
We present results of the search for the super-symmetric partner of the top quark, the stop quark, decaying to a b-quark and chargino with the subsequent chargino decay into a neutralino, lepton and neutrino. Using the data sample corresponding to 2.7 inv fb of integrated luminosity, collected with the CDF Detector of the Tevatron collider, we reconstruct the stop mass of candidate events and set 95% C. L. upper limits on masses of the stop quark, chargino and neutralino and the branching ratio of chargino to neutralino+lepton+neutrino.
The CDF experiment at the Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider has pioneered and established the role of hadron collisions in exploring flavor physics through a broad program that is now at its full maturity. We report new results sensitive to physics beyond the standard model, obtained using the whole CDF data set; including new bounds on the \Bs\ mixing phase and the decay width difference of \Bs\ mass-eigenstates and a measurement of the difference of CP asymmetries in $K^+K^-$ and $π^+π^-$ decays of $D^0$ mesons. We also present a new measurement of the $\Bs \rightarrow D^{(*)+}_s D^{(*)-}_s$ bran…
We report on a search for anomalous kinematics of ttbar dilepton events in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV using 193 {pb}^{-1} of data collected with the CDF II detector. We developed a new a priori technique designed to isolate the subset in a data sample revealing the largest deviation from standard model (SM) expectations and to quantify the significance of this departure. In the four-variable space considered, no particular subset shows a significant discrepancy and we find that the probability of obtaining a data sample less consistent with the SM than what is observed is 1.0-4.5%.
We report on a search for Bs -> mu+mu- and Bd -> mu+mu- decays in ppbar collisions at sqrt(S) = 1.96 TeV using 364 pb-1 of data collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. After applying all selection requirements, we observe no candidates inside the Bs or Bd mass windows, consistent with the background expectation. The resulting upper limits on the branching fractions are B(Bs -> mu+mu-) < 1.5E10-7 and B(Bd -> mu+mu-) < 3.9E-8 at 90% confidence level.
Data collected in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron are searched for indications of new electroweak scale physics. Rather than focusing on particular new physics scenarios, CDF data are analyzed for discrepancies with respect to the standard model prediction. A model-independent approach (Vista) considers the gross features of the data, and is sensitive to new large cross section physics. A quasi-model-independent approach (Sleuth) searches for a significant excess of events with large summed transverse momentum, and is particularly sensitive to new electroweak scale physics that appears predomi…
We report a search for non-Standard Model physics through the measurement of CP-violating asymmetry in the Cabibbo suppressed D0->pi+pi- and D0->K+K- decays reconstructed in about 5.94/fb of CDF data. We use the strong D*+->D0pi+ decay ("D* tag") to identify the flavor of the charmed meson at production time and exploit CP-conserving strong c-cbar pair-production in p-pbar collisions. Large samples of Cabibbo favored D0->K-pi+ decays with and without D* tag are used to highly suppress systematic uncertainties due to detector effects. The results are the world's most precise measurements to dat…
We present the results of searches for the standard model Higgs boson at CDF in final states with bottom quarks. Results are derived from the complete Tevatron Run II dataset, with a measured integrated luminosity of 9.5 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-antiproton data. The searches are performed for assumed Higgs masses between 90 and 150 GeV, for Higgs bosons produced in association with W or Z bosons. Employing several improved techniques, these are currently the most sensitive searches in the world for these processes, surpassing previous CDF results by 30% beyond what would be expected from the additi…

We present a search for high-mass neutral resonances using dimuon data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb$^{-1}$ collected in {$p\bar p$} collisions at {$\sqrt{s}$ = 1.96 TeV} by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. No significant excess above the standard model expectation is observed in the dimuon invariant-mass spectrum. We set 95% confidence level upper limits on $σ\cdot BR (p \bar{p} \to X \to μ\barμ)$, where $X$ is a boson with spin 0, 1, or 2. Using these cross section limits, we determine lower mass limits on sneutrinos in R-parity-violating supersymmetric mod…

Events with multiple jets of hadrons and large missing transverse energy in the final state are studied within the framework of minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) and assuming R-parity conservation. The results are compared to Standard Model predictions and limits on gluino and squark masses are extracted. A specific search for the supersymmetric partner of the bottom quar…
We combine the results of searches for the standard model Higgs boson based on the full CDF Run II data set obtained from sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45/fb. The searches are conducted for Higgs bosons that are produced in association with a W or Z boson, have masses in the range 90-150 GeV/c^2, and decay into bb pairs. An excess of data is present that is inconsistent with the background prediction at the level of 2.5 standard deviations (the most significant local excess is 2.7 standard deviations).

We present the latest combination of searches for a standard model (SM) Higgs boson in ppbar collisions at \sqrts= 1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF~II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. Using data corresponding to 2.3-5.9 fb-1 of integrated luminosity, we perform searches in a number of different production and decay modes and then combine them to improve sensitivity. No excess in data above that expected from backgrounds is observed; therefore, we set upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction as a function of the SM Higgs boson mass (mH). The combined observed (expecte…
We have performed a search for new particles which decay to two photons using 1.2/fb of integrated luminosity from p-pbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV collected using the CDF II Detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We find the diphoton mass spectrum to be in agreement with the standard model expectation, and set limits on the cross section times branching ratio for the Randall-Sundrum graviton, as a function of diphoton mass. We subsequently derive lower limits for the graviton mass of 230 GeV/c2 and 850 GeV/c2, at the 95% confidence level, for coupling parameters (k/M_Pl) of 0.01 and 0.1 re…
We present a search for a Higgs boson decaying to two W bosons in ppbar collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV center-of-mass energy. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb-1 collected with the CDF II detector. We find no evidence for production of a Higgs boson with mass between 110 and 200 GeV/c^2, and determine upper limits on the production cross section. For the mass of 160 GeV/c^2, where the analysis is most sensitive, the observed (expected) limit is 0.7 pb (0.9 pb) at 95% Bayesian credibility level which is 1.7 (2.2) times the standard model cross section.
We present a search for standard model (SM) Higgs boson production using ppbar collision data at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb-1. We search for Higgs bosons produced in all processes with a significant production rate and decaying to two W bosons. We find no evidence for SM Higgs boson production and place upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the SM production cross section (sigma(H)) for values of the Higgs boson mass (m_H) in the range from 110 to 200 GeV. These limits are the most stringent for m_H > 130…
We report the latest result for the search for the standard model higgs produced in association with a W and a Z boson at CDF. The results include about 1 to 1.7 fb-1 of data collected by CDF in run II of the Tevatron. Novel analysis techniques have been developed to enhance the sensitivity of these searches.
We present a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson in data collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45/fb. In events consistent with the decay of the Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the Z boson to electron or muon pairs, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the ZH production cross section times the H -> bb branching ratio as a function of Higgs boson mass. At a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c^2 we observe (expect) a limit of 7.1 (3.9) times the standard model value.
In the last decade the CDF experiment at the Tevatron clearly demonstrated that it is possible to study extensively heavy flavour physics in hadron collisions and achieve remarkable results, competitive and complementary to $B$-factories. In this paper we report on the indirect searches for physics beyond the standard model via measurements of rare $b$-hadron decays. The final limits, based on the analysis of the full CDF data set, on the branching fraction of the $B^0_{(s)}$ decay into a pair of muons are presented and discussed. Moreover we review the latest measurements, with 6.8 fb$^{-1}$ …
We present the results of a search for supersymmetry with gauge-mediated breaking and $\NONE\toγ\Gravitino$ in the $γγ$+missing transverse energy final state. In 2.6$\pm$0.2 \invfb of $p{\bar p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$$=$1.96 TeV recorded by the CDF II detector we observe no candidate events, consistent with a standard model background expectation of 1.4$\pm$0.4 events. We set limits on the cross section at the 95% C.L. and place the world's best limit of 149\gevc on the \none mass at $τ_{\tildeχ_1^0}$$<<$1 ns. We also exclude regions in the \none\ mass-lifetime plane for $τ_{\tildeχ_1^0}$$\…
We report on a search for new particles in the diphoton channel using a data sample of $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.96$ TeV collected by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, with an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$. The diphoton invariant mass spectrum of the data agrees well with the standard model expectation. We set upper limits on the production cross section times branching ratio for the Randall-Sundrum graviton, as a function of diphoton mass. We subsequently derive lower limits on the graviton mass of 459 GeV$/c^{2}$ and 963 GeV$/c^{2}$, at the 95% confidence lev…
We present the results of the first hadron collider search for heavy, long-lived neutralinos that decay via lightest neutralino to gamma gravitino in gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking models. Using an integrated luminosity of $570\pm34 pb^{-1}$ of $p\bar{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$ TeV, we select $γ$+jet+missing transverse energy candidate events based on the arrival time of a high-energy photon at the electromagnetic calorimeter as measured with a timing system that was recently installed on the CDF II detector. We find 2 events, consistent with the background estimate of 1.3$\pm$0.…
The missing transverse energy (MET) plus b-jets signature is very promising for searches for the Higgs boson or new physics. Indeed, MET naturally arises from unidentified particles such as neutrinos, neutralinos, gravitons, etc., and b-quarks are the main decay products of a low mass Higgs boson as well as of several exotic particles. The main challenge is to identify and reject the numerous standard model (SM) backgrounds that mimic this signature. This is especially so for QCD multi-jet production, a large background due to mis-measurement (rather than undetectable particles). We present st…
We report on a search for the production of the Higgs boson decaying to two bottom quarks accompanied by two additional quarks. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of approximately 4\,\invfb\, of \ppbar\, collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.96$\,TeV recorded by the CDF II experiment. This search includes twice the integrated luminosity of the previous published result, uses analysis techniques to distinguish jets originating from light flavor quarks and those from gluon radiation, and adds sensitivity to a Higgs boson produced by vector boson fusion. We find no evidence of the H…
We combine results from CDF and D0's direct searches for the standard model (SM) Higgs boson (H) produced in ppbar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron at sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV, focusing on the decay H\rightarrowγγ. We compute upper limits on the Higgs boson production cross section times the decay branching fraction in the range 100<m_H<150 GeV/c^2, and we interpret the results in the context of the standard model. We use the MSTW08 parton distribution functions and the latest theoretical cross section predictions when testing for the presence of a SM Higgs boson. With datasets corresponding to 7.0…
If the Technicolor omega_T particle exists, a likely decay mode is omega_T -> gamma pi_T, followed by pi_T -> bb-bar, yielding the signature gamma bb-bar. We have searched 85 pb^-1 of data collected by the CDF experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron for events with a photon and two jets, where one of the jets must contain a secondary vertex implying the presence of a b quark. We find no excess of events above standard model expectations. We express the result of an exclusion region in the M_omega_T - M_pi_T mass plane.
We present the first search for heavy, long-lived particles that decay to photons at a hadron collider. We use a sample of photon+jet+missing transverse energy events in p-pbar collisions at \sqrt{s}=1.96 TeV taken with the CDF II detector. Candidate events are selected based on the arrival time of the photon at the detector. Using an integrated luminosity of 570 pb-1 of collision data, we observe 2 events, consistent with the background estimate of 1.3+-0.7 events. While our search strategy does not rely on model-specific dynamics, we set cross section limits in a supersymmetric model with \t…
A global, model-independent search for high-pT exotic phenomena is presented using 927 pb^-1 of CDF II data. The search algorithms employed in this analysis are Vista and Sleuth. These proceedings focus on Vista, including a description of the method and a summary of results.
A search for a narrow Higgs boson resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum is presented based on data corresponding to 10 fb-1 of integrated luminosity from proton-antiproton collisions at \surds = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF experiment. In addition to searching for a resonance in the diphoton mass spectrum, we employ a multivariate discriminant technique for the first time in this channel at CDF. No evidence of signal is observed, and upper limits are set on the cross section times branching ratio of the resonant state as a function of Higgs boson mass. The limits are interpreted in the cont…
A search is presented for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with top quarks using the full Run II proton-antiproton collision data set, corresponding to 9.45 inverse fb, collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. No significant excess over the expected background is observed, and 95% credibility-level upper bounds are placed on the cross section sigma(t\bar{t}H --> lepton + missing transverse energy + jets). For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, we expect to set a limit of 12.6, and observe a limit of 20.5 times the standard model rate. This represents the most sensitive…
