The photonuclear production of vector mesons in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is investigated within the collinear approach using different parameterizations for the nuclear gluon distribution. The integrated cross section and the rapidity distribution for the $AA \to V AA$ ($V = J/Ψ, Υ$) process are computed for energies of RHIC and LHC. A comparison with the recent PHENIX data on coherent production of $J/Ψ$ mesons is also presented. We demonstrate that the study of the exclusive quarkonium photoproduction can be used to constrain the nuclear effects in the gluon distribution.
The double spin asymmetry for exclusive $J/ψ$ pair production in the polarized $p-p$ collisions at RHIC is investigated. Our study shows that the asymmetry in this process is measurable at RHIC-SPIN experiments in the near future, and, hence it can be used to determine the gluon distribution function $ΔG (x)$ in the polarized nucleon.
We study nuclear shadowing in $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ production in hadron-nucleus interactions and in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. %We define the regions in $x_f$ where nuclear shadowing begins %to set in for \jp\ and \up. As a consequence of the perturbative $Q^2$-dependence of gluon shadowing, we predict that $Υ$ production is less suppressed than the $J/ψ$. We show that antishadowing leads to enhanced \jp\ production at $x_f \lesssim 0$, an effect reduced for $Υ$ production.
The quarkonium hadroproduction in association with a photon at high energies provides a probe of the dynamics of the strong interactions as it is dependent on the nuclear gluon distribution. Therefore, it could be used to constrain the behavior of the nuclear gluon distribution in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. Such processes are useful to single out the magnitude of the shadowing/antishadowing effects in the nuclear parton densities. In this work we investigate the influence of nuclear effects in the production of JPsi + photon and Upsilon + photon and estimate the transverse …
We investigate the inclusive production of prompt J/psi mesons in polarized hadron-hadron and photon-hadron collisions in the factorization formalism of NRQCD. Numerical results are presented for BNL RHIC-Spin and the approved SLAC fixed-target experiment E161 to assess the feasibility to access the spin-dependent parton distributions in the polarized proton and photon. We point out that data on J/psi production taken by the PHENIX Collaboration in unpolarized proton-proton collisions at RHIC tend to favor the NRQCD factorization hypothesis, while they significantly overshoot the theoretical p…
In this contribution we study the photoproduction of quarkonium in coherent proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus interactions at the LHC. The integrated cross sections and rapidity distributions are estimated using the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) formalism, which takes into account the parton saturation effects at high energies. Nuclear shadowing effects are also taken into account.
Background: Proton-nucleus collisions have been used as a intermediate baseline for the determination of cold medium effects. They lie between proton-proton collisions in vacuum and nucleus-nucleus collisions which are expected to be dominated by hot matter effects. Modifications of the quark densities in nuclei relative to those of the proton are well established although those of the gluons in the nucleus are not well understood. We focus on the effect of these on quarkonium production in proton-lead collisions at the LHC at a center of mass energy of 5.02 TeV.
We present a phenomenological study of the $x_F$ dependence of quarkonium production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. The \xf~dependence of comover contributions is introduced to account for the observed quarkonium suppression at low $x_F$. Combining comover contributions, nuclear shadowing effect, energy loss mechanism and nuclear absorption together we reproduce the overall \xf~dependence of E772/E789 data.
We suggest the measurement of Drell-Yan (DY) lepton pairs in p-Pb collisions at the LHC (sqrt(s)=5.02 TeV) in order to disentangle the relative contributions of shadowing and coherent energy loss in quarkonium production off nuclei. The nuclear modification of low mass DY production is computed at NLO using various sets of nuclear parton densities. It is then observed that shadowing effects strongly cancel out in the J/psi over DY suppression ratio R_{pA}^{J/psi}(y) / R_{pA}^{DY}(y), unlike the effect of coherent energy loss. Such a measurement could be performed at forward rapidity by the ALI…
A model for the production of quarkonium states in the midrapidity region at RHIC and LHC energy range is presented which explores well understood properties of QCD only. An increase of the quarkonium hadronisation time with the initial energy leads to a gradual change of the most important phenomena from fixed target- to collider-energies. We evaluate nuclear effects in the quarkonium production due to medium modification of the momentum distribution of the heavy quarks produced in the hard interactions, i.e. due to the broadening of the transverse momentum distribution. Other nuclear effects…
The charmonium yields are expected to be considerably suppressed if a deconfined medium is formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. In addition, the bottomonium states, with the possible exception of the Upsilon(1S) state, are also expected to be suppressed in heavy-ion collisions. However, in proton-nucleus collisions the quarkonium production cross sections, even those of the Upsilon(1S), are also suppressed. These "cold nuclear matter" effects need to be accounted for before signals of the high density QCD medium can be identified in the measurements made in nucleus-nucleus collisions. W…
These lectures present an overview of the current status of the QCD based phenomenology for open and hidden heavy flavor production at high energies. A unified description based on the light-cone color-dipole approach is employed in all cases. A good agreement with available data is achieved without fitting to the data to be explained, and nontrivial predictions for future experiments are made. The key phenomena under discussion are: (i) formation of the wave function of a heavy quarkonium; (ii) quantum interference and coherence length effects; (iii) Landau-Pomeranchuk suppression of gluon ra…
Heavy quarkonium production in ultra-peripheral nuclear collisions (UPC) is described within the QCD dipole formalism. Realistic quarkonium wave functions in the $Q\bar Q$ rest frame are calculated by solving the Schrödinger equation with a subsequent Lorentz boost to high energy. We rely on several realistic $Q\bar Q$ potentials, which allow to describe well the quarkonium masses and decay widths, as well as data on diffractive electroproduction of quarkonia on protons. Nuclear effects are calculated with the phenomenological dipole cross sections fitted to DIS data. The higher twist quark sh…
Two novel QCD effects, double color filtering and mutual boosting of the saturation scales in colliding nuclei, affect the transparency of the nuclei for quark dipoles in comparison with proton-nucleus collisions. The former effect increases the survival probability of the dipoles, since color filtering in one nucleus makes the other one more transparent. The second effect acts in the opposite direction and is stronger, it makes the colliding nuclei more opaque than in the case of pA collisions. As a result of parton saturation in nuclei the effective scale is shifted upwards, what leads to an…
Coherent photoproduction of heavy quarkonia on nuclear targets is studied within the QCD color dipole formalism including several main phenomena: i) The correlation between impact parameter of a collision $\vec b$ and dipole orientation $\vec r$; ii) The higher-twist nuclear shadowing related to the $\bar QQ$ Fock state of the photon; iii) The leading-twist gluon shadowing corresponding to higher Fock components of the photon containing gluons; iv) Reduced effects of quantum coherence in a popular Balitsky-Kovchegov equation compared to calculations, which are frequently presented in the liter…
Hadron production in proton-nucleus (pA) collisions was previously shown to be suppressed by medium-induced fully coherent energy loss (FCEL). We show that the quenching of $D$ and $B$ mesons in pPb collisions at the LHC due solely to FCEL is, at least, on par with other nuclear effects such as gluon shadowing or saturation. This is consistent with previous findings for both quarkonium and light hadron production in pA collisions, emphasising that FCEL effects need to be included for a reliable understanding of hadron production measurements in pA collisions.
We study the energy and nuclear A dependence of the hadronic production of heavy quarkonia. We review theoretical ideas which have been put forward, seeking a consistent global picture reconciling the large effects in quarkonia with the small nuclear effects observed in continuum Drell Yan production. The data indicates that shadowing or leading twist modifications of parton distributions can be ruled out as explanations, leaving higher twist energy loss. {}From general principles the maximum allowed energy loss of partons traversing the nuclear medium can be related to the parton transverse m…
We single out the role of fully coherent induced gluon radiation on light hadron production in pA collisions. The effect has the same general features as for quarkonium production, however with a richer color structure as the induced radiation depends on the global color charge of the partonic subprocess final state. Baseline predictions for light hadron nuclear suppression in pPb collisions at the LHC are provided, taking into account only the effect of fully coherent energy loss, which proves to be of the same order of magnitude as gluon shadowing or saturation. This underlines the need to i…
We had been gradually working towards building a comprehensive quarkonia suppression formalism to explain all 3 dependencies of quarkonium suppression obtained from heavy-ion collision experiments. We present here the improved version of quarkonia suppression framework. It assumes bottomonia produced in the early stage which dissociates due to color screening, gluonic dissociation, and collisional damping in addition to the shadowing as an initial state effect. The QGP medium formed in the collisions is assumed to evolve under ($3+1$)-dimensional relativistic viscous hydrodynamics which is mod…
In this paper we estimate the influence of the shadowing effect and initial state parton energy loss in the quarkonium production at HERA-B. We analyze the $x_F$ behavior of the effective exponent $α(x_F)$ and present a comparison with the preliminary HERA-B data for $J/Ψ$ production. Moreover, we estimate the magnitude of these effects in the $J/Ψ$ production at RHIC.
Following a recent work on equation of state for strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma [J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. 32, 993 (2006)], we revisited the equation of state by incorporating the non-perturbative effects in the deconfined plasma phase. Our results on thermodynamic observables viz. pressure, energy density, speed of sound etc. nicely fit with the lattice equation of state for gluon, massless and as well massive flavored plasma. Motivated by this agreement with lattice results, we have employed our equation of state to estimate the quarkonium suppression in an expanding, dissipativ…
In anticipating the upcoming proton-lead run at the LHC in the near future, we present predictions for the nuclear modification factor of transverse momentum spectrum of $Z^0$ production and transverse momentum broadening of vector boson ($J/ψ$, $Υ$, $W/Z^0$) production in proton-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s}=5$ TeV, respectively. We find that the measurement of nuclear modification factor of $Z^0$ production provides a clean and unambiguous test of the nuclear anti-shadowing proposed in the recent EPS09. In addition, the dramatic difference in transverse momentum broadening between the heavy q…
A previously constructed transport approach to calculate the evolution of quarkonium yields and spectra in heavy-ion collisions is applied to Pb-Pb($\sqrt{s}$=2.76\,ATeV) collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this approach spectral properties of charmonia are constrained by euclidean correlators from thermal lattice QCD and subsequently implemented into a Boltzmann equation accounting for both suppression and regeneration reactions. Based on a fair description of SPS and RHIC data, we provide predictions for the centrality dependence of $J/ψ$ yields at LHC. The main uncertainty is …

The QCD light-front (LF) Hamiltonian equation H_{LF}|Ψ> = M^2 |Ψ> derived from quantization at fixed LF time τ= t+z/c provides a causal, frame-independent, method for computing hadron spectroscopy as well as dynamical observables such as structure functions, transverse momentum distributions, and distribution amplitudes. The LF formalism also leads to novel nuclear phenomena, such as "hidden color", "color transparency", "nuclear-bound quarkonium" and the shadowing and antishadowing of nuclear structure functions. For example, there are five distinct color-singlet Fock state representations of…
