We single out the role of fully coherent induced gluon radiation on light hadron production in pA collisions. The effect has the same general features as for quarkonium production, however with a richer color structure as the induced radiation depends on the global color charge of the partonic subprocess final state. Baseline predictions for light hadron nuclear suppression in pPb collisions at the LHC are provided, taking into account only the effect of fully coherent energy loss, which proves to be of the same order of magnitude as gluon shadowing or saturation. This underlines the need to include fully coherent energy loss in phenomenological studies of hadron production in pA collisions.
We present the gluon-gluon and photon-gluon helicity amplitudes for color singlet and octet charmonium production in polarized and unpolarized hadron-hadron and photon-hadron collisions.
The photoproduction of quarkonium in coherent hadron-hadron (pp/pA/AA$) interactions for LHC energies is an important tool to investigate the QCD dynamics at high energies. In this paper we estimate the integrated cross section and rapidity distribution for J/Psi and Upsilon production using the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) formalism. We predict large rates, implying that the experimental identification could be feasible at the LHC.
We introduce the Weibull distribution as a simple parametrization of charged particle multiplicities in hadron-hadron collisions at all available energies, ranging from ISR energies to the most recent LHC energies. In statistics, the Weibull distribution has wide applicability in natural processes involving fragmentation processes. This gives a natural connection to the available state-of-the-art models for multi-particle production in hadron hadron collisions involving QCD parton fragmentation and hadronization.
Combining results on single-particle distributions with those of the Bose-Einstein correlation analysis in the same experiment, the space-time emission function is extracted as a function of time and longitudinal coordinate, as well as a function of transverse coordinates. While the former function resembles a boomerang for both types of collision (only shifted in the time direction due to the larger freeze-out time in heavy-ion collisions), the latter function is Gaussian for heavy-ion collisions, but ring-shaped for hadron-hadron collisions.
We argue that spin alignment of the vector mesons observed in unpolarized hadron-hadron collisions is closely related to the single spin left-right asymmetry observed in transversely polarized hadron-hadron collisions. We present the numerical results obtained from the type of spin-correlation imposed by the existence of the single-spin left-right asymmetries. We compare the results with the available data and make predictions for future experiments.
In the framework of the Schwinger Model for percolating strings we establish a general relation between multiplicity and transverse momentum square distributions in hadron-hadron and heavy ion collisions. Some of our results agree with the Colour Glass Condensate model.
At very high energy the same universal relation between the multiparticle or the transverse energy distribution associated to a rare event $C$, $P_C$ and the corresponding minimum bias distribution P, $P_C(ν)\equiv ν/<ν> P(ν)$, $ν\equiv n$ or $E_T$ works for nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as for hadron-hadron collisions. This suggests that asymptotically, all hadronic processes are similar.
Hadron production in single and central diffraction dissociation is studied in a model which includes soft hadron interaction as controlled by a supercritical pomeron parametrization and hard diffraction. Within this model, particle production in collisions with pomerons exhibit properties like multiple soft interactions and multiple minijets, quite similar to hadron production in non-diffractive hadronic collisions at high energies. However, important differences occur in transverse momentum jet and hadron distributions. It is shown that the model is able to describe data from the CERN-SPS co…

A transport model based on the mean free path approach to describe pp collisions is proposed. We assume that hadrons can be treated as bags of partons similarly to the MIT bag model. When the energy density in the collision is higher than a critical value, the bags break and partons are liberated. The partons expand and can make coalescence to form new hadrons. The results obtained compare very well with available data and some prediction for higher energies collisions are discussed. Based on the model we suggest that a QGP could already be formed in the pp collisions at high energies.
The discriminators of quark-gluon jets developed for $pp$ collisions at the LHC can be used to measure the gluon jet fraction in a jet sample. It allows to measure various characteristics of the quark and gluon jets. The methodology of such measurements for modern hadron colliders is discussed.
It is argued that the breakdown of factorization observed recently in the diffractive dijet production in deep inelastic lepton induced and hadron induced processes is naturally explained in the Good-Walker picture of diffraction dissociation. The explicit formula for the hadronic cross-section is given and successfully compared with the existing data.
A new striking feature of hadron production in nuclear collisions is the large stopping of the participating nucleons in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions. This enhanced baryon stopping can be understood introducing new diquark breaking mechanisms in multistring models of hadron production. Here we show, that similar diquark breaking mechanisms occur at high energy even in hadron-hadron collisions. This effect leads to significant changes in the extrapolation of these models to Cosmic Ray energies.
To understand baryon stopping we analyse new RHIC and Fermilab data within the framework of the multichain Monte Carlo DPMJET-III. The present consideration is restricted to to hadron-hadron and d-Au collisions.
We analyse the entropy properties in the proton-proton 1800 GeV events from the PYTHIA/JETSET Monte Carlo generator following a recent proposal concerning the measurement of entropy in multiparticle systems. The dependence on the number of bins and on the size of the phase-space region is investigated. Our results may serve as a reference sample for experimental data from hadron-hadron and heavy ion collisions.
Oscillatory behavior of cumulant moments obtained from the experimental data in $pp$ collisions and $\bar{p}p$ collisions are analyzed by the modified negative binomial distribution (MNBD) and the negative binomial distribution (NBD). Both distributions well describe the cumulant moments obtained from the data. This fact shows sharp contrast to the result in $e^+e^-$ collisions, which is described by the the MNBD much better than by the NBD.
We discuss high-pT production processes at forward rapidities in hadron-hadron collisions, and describe recent results from using QCD high-energy factorization in forward jet production at the LHC.
Properties of chiral Born-Infeld Theory proposed as the model for shock-wave fireball production in the hadron-hadron collisions was studied. The role of the shock-waves in the multi-particle production was discussed.
We study the possibility to employ neural networks to simulate jet clustering procedures in high energy hadron-hadron collisions. We concentrate our analysis on the Fermilab Tevatron energy and on the $k_\bot$ algorithm. We consider both supervised multilayer feed-forward network trained by the backpropagation algorithm and unsupervised learning, where the neural network autonomously organizes the events in clusters.
We present recent QCD calculations of energy flow distributions associated with the production of jets at wide rapidity separations in high-energy hadron collisions, and discuss the role of these observables to analyze contributions from parton showering and from multiple parton collisions.
This talk discusses basic aspects of forward production of jets in pp collisions at high energy, including i) issues on QCD factorization for hard processes at large rapidities, and ii) the role of forward jet measurements at the LHC to investigate contributions to parton showers from large-angle gluon radiation and from multiple parton interactions.
We show how the transverse polarization of a quark initiating a jet can be probed by the azimuthal distribution of two hadrons (of large $z$) in the jet. This permits a twist 2 asymmetry in hard processes when only one of the initial particles is polarized transversely. Applications to hadron-hadron and lepton-hadron scattering are discussed.
Typically the materialization of high energetic transverse partons to hadronic jets is assumed to occur outside the reaction zone in a relativistic heavy ion collision. In contrast, a quantum mechanical estimate yields a time on the order of only a few fm/c for building up the hadronic wavefunction for jets with typical transverse momenta of pT < 10 GeV as accessible at RHIC facilities. The role of possible elastic or inelastic collisions of these high pT particles with the bulk of hadrons inside the fireball is addressed by means of an opacity expansion in the number of collisions. This analy…
In this talk, we report our recent progress on pinning down the cause of negativity in the NLO single inclusive hadron production in pA collisions at forward rapidity.
We argue that recent NA49 results on multiparticle distributions and fluctuations, as a function of the number of participant nucleons, suggest that percolation plays an important role in particle production at high densities.
The transverse mass spectra of Omega hyperons and phi mesons measured recently by STAR Collaboration in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 130 GeV are described within a hydrodynamic model of the quark gluon plasma expansion and hadronization. The flow parameters at the plasma hadronization extracted by fitting these data are used to predict the transverse mass spectra of J/psi and psi' mesons.
We argue that recent NA49 results on multiparticle distributions and fluctuations, as a function of the number of participant nucleons, suggest that percolation plays an important role in particle production at high densities.
We apply the picture proposed in a previous Letter, which relates the hyperon polarization in unpolarized hadron-hadron collisions to the left-right asymmetry in singly polarized reactions, to the production of different hyperons in reactions using different projectiles and/or targets. We discuss the different ingredients of the proposed picture in detail and present the results for hyperon polarization in the reactions such as $pp$, $K^-p$, $π^{\pm}p$, and $Σ^-p$ collisions. We compare the results with the available data and make predictions for future experiments.
Direct photon production at large transverse momentum in the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders is calculated in the two-gluon exchange model. We find that the amplitude for the production process is related to the differential off-diagonal gluon distribution function in the proton. We estimate the production rate at the Fermilab Tevatron by approximately using the usual gluon distribution function. Because of the clean signature, this process can be used to detailed study the small-x physics, and the coherent diffractive processes at hadron colliders.
Hadrons emitted by the pre-surface layer of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) before phase transition into hadronic gas are considered as possible source of direct information about QGP. It is shown that these hadrons dominate at soft p_t if QGP is created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.
We discuss a collective effect, which can be possible in hadron--hadron collisions at superhigh energies, that is, a quasi-diffraction production of several white clusters of quarks and gluons. Being transformed into hadrons, such clusters are sources of the fastest particles, which move forward nearly parallel to each other.
A Hamiltonian eikonal model for the multiple production in high energy hadron hadron collisions is presented and worked out in the aim of providing a simple frame for many different observables of these processes. The Hamiltonian formulation ensures that it has the unitarity built in by construction and the eikonal approximation makes easier the discussion of the possible spacial inhomogeneities of the hadrons. The experimental data which are examined are the inelastic cross section and the single and double inclusive cross sections.
An improved effective vector-boson approximation is applied to hadron-hadron collisions. I include an approximative treatment and compare with a complete perturbative calculation for the specific example of $ZZ$ production. The results are also compared with existing approaches. The effective vector-boson approximation in this form is accurate enough to reproduce the complete calculation within 10%. This is true even far away from a possible Higgs boson resonance where the transverse intermediate vector-bosons give the dominant contribution.
Recently, significant enhancements of $e^{+} e^{-}$ pair production at very low transverse momentum ($p_{T} < 0.15$ GeV/c) were observed by the STAR collaboration in peripheral hadronic A+A collisions. This excesses can not be described by the QGP thermal radiation and $ρ$ in-medium broadening calculations. This is a sign of coherent photon-photon interactions, which were conventionally studied only in ultra-peripheral collisions. In this article, we present calculations of lepton pair ($e^{+}e^{-}$ and $μ^{+}μ^{-}$) production from coherent photon-photon interactions in hadronic A+A collision…
Jet finding algorithms, as they are used in $e^+ e^-$ and hadron collisions, are reviewed and compared. It is suggested that a successive combination style algorithm, similar to that used in $e^+ e^-$ physics, might be useful also in hadron collisions, where cone style algorithms have been used previously.
We discuss directed flow introduced for description of nucleus collisions and consider its possible behavior in hadronic and nuclei reactions due to rotation of the transient matter.
Exclusive production of charmonium-like XYZ states in hadron-hadron ultraperipheral collisions(UPCs) and electron-proton scattering is studied employing effective Lagrangian method. Total cross sections and rapidity distributions of charmonium-like XYZ states are obtained in hadron-hadron UPCs and electron-proton scattering process. These predictions can be applied to estimate the observed event number of exclusive charmonium-like XYZ states in hadron-hadron UPCs and electron-proton scattering. The results indicate that it is significant to search $X(3872)$ and $Z^+_c(3900)$ in pA UPCs and Ele…
A brief historical review is made of the hadron-hadron (hh) total cross section and hadron-nucleus absorption cross section measurements, made mainly at high energy proton synchrotrons. Then I shall discuss low p_tprocesses, including diffraction processes and fragmentation of nuclei in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Nucleus-nucleus collisions at higher energy colliders are then considered, mainly in the context of the search for the gluon quark plasma. Conclusions and a short discussion on perspectives follow.
The program of understanding inverse-power law corrections to event shapes and energy flow observables in e+ e- annihilation to two jets and DIS (1+1) jets has been a significant success of QCD phenomenology over the last decade. The important extension of this program to similar observables in hadron collisions is not straightforward, being obscured by both conceptual and technical issues. In this paper we shed light on some of these issues by providing an estimate of power corrections to the inter-jet E_t flow distribution in hadron collisions using the techniques that were employed in the e…
The present discussion focusses on the dominant production of the 0++ glueball in central collisions in the suppressed yet observable channel 0++ --> pi+ pi- l+ l-.
We elaborate on the hypothesis that in high energy hadron hadron and nucleus nucleus collisions the lowest mass glueballs are copiously produced from the gluon rich environment especially at high energy density. We discuss the particular glueball decay modes: $0^{++}, 2^{++} \to K \bar{K}$ and $0^{++} \to π^{+} π^{-} \ell^{+} \ell^{-}$.
We investigate lepton-pair production in hard exclusive hadron-hadron collisions. We consider a double handbag (DH) mechanism in which the process amplitude factorizes in hard subprocesses, qq -> qq gamma* and qg -> qg gamma*, and in soft hadron matrix elements parameterized as generalized parton distributions (GPDs). Employing GPDs extracted from exclusive meson electroproduction, we present predictions for the lepton-pair cross section at kinematics typical for the LHC, NICA and FAIR. It turns out from our numerical studies that the quark-gluon subprocess dominates by far, the quark-quark (a…
Possible scenarios in hh collisions in the TeV regions are discussed in full phase space. It is shown that at such high energies one should expect strong KNO scaling violation and a ln(s) increase of the average charged multiplicity of the semi-hard component, resulting in a huge mini-jet production.
After a short discussion on the definition of isolated-photon cross sections in perturbative QCD, I present phenomenological predictions relevant for polarized hadron-hadron collisions in the RHIC energy range. The possibility of measuring $Δg$ is investigated.
Proof of transverse-momentum-dependent(TMD) factorization for hadron-hadron collision is given in this paper. We focus on processes without detected soft final hadrons or detected final hadrons that are collinear to initial hadrons. This contradicts the widely accepted viewpoint that TMD- factorization does not hold in such processes even in the generalized sense. The key point is that singular points of the type l+ = 0 can be absorbed into Wilson lines of soft gluons, where l is collinear to the plus direction. Thus one should subtract such singular points from the collinear region of l. Afte…
A detailed analysis is performed of transverse momentum spectra of several identified hadrons in high energy collisions within the framework of the statistical model of hadronisation. The effect of the decay chain following hadron generation is accurately taken into account. The considered centre-of-mass energies range from ~ 10 to 30 GeV in hadronic collisions (pi+ p, pp and Kp) and from ~ 15 to 45 GeV in e+e- collisions. A clear consistency is found between the temperature parameter extracted from the present analysis and that obtained from fits to average hadron multiplicities in the same c…
Nucleus-nucleus collisions offer a great opportunity for analyzing and determining the intrinsic nature of heavy and exotic hadrons. In this sense, here we discuss how the production and dissociation of hadron states are affected by reactions during the expansion of hadronic matter in a heavy-ion collision environment. We give emphasis to recent works on exotic states, revisiting as a case study the time evolution of the abundances of the $X_{0,1}(2900)$ states.
I present an overview of the ridge phenomenon in proton-proton and proton-lead collisions. This novel collimation between rapidity separated hadron pairs is a consequence of non-linear gluon dynamics within the small-x wave-function of the colliding hadrons.
A next-to-leading order (NLO) analysis of hadron-jet momentum correlations in p-p collisions at the LHC is carried out. We show that the inclusive charged hadron momentum distributions inside jets is a very sensitive observable which allows one to disentangle among various fragmentation function sets presently available. Correlations with identified hadrons (kaons, protons) are investigated as well.
A selection of recent data referring to Pb+Pb collisions at the SPS CERN energy of 158 GeV per nucleon is presented which might describe the state of highly excited strongly interacting matter both above and below the deconfinement to hadronization (phase) transition predicted by lattice QCD. A tentative picture emerges in which a partonic state is indeed formed in central Pb+Pb collisions which hadronizes at about T = 185 MeV, and expands its volume more than tenfold, cooling to about 120 MeV before hadronic collisions cease. We suggest further that all SPS collisions, from central S+S onward…
Relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions create a "fireball" of strongly interacting matter at high energy density. At very high energy this is suggested to be partonic matter, but at lower energy it should consist of yet unknown hadronic, perhaps coherent degrees of freedom. The freeze-out of this high density state to a hadron gas can tell us about properties of fireball matter.
