Inflationary quantum gravity simplifies drastically in the leading logarithm approximation. We show that the only counterterm which contributes in this limit is the 1-loop renormalization of the cosmological constant. We go further to make a simplifying assumption about the operator dynamics at leading logarithm order. This assumption is explicitly implemented at 1- and 2-loop orders, and we describe how it can be implemented nonperturbatively. We also compute the expectation value of an invariant observable designed to quantify the quantum gravitational back-reaction on inflation. Although our dynamical assumption may not prove to be completely correct, it does have the right time dependence, it can naturally produce primordial perturbations of the right strength, and it illustrates how a rigorous application of the leading logarithm approximation might work in quantum gravity. It also serves as a partial test of the "null hypothesis" that there are no significant effects from infrared gravitons.
It was pointed out that brane-anti-brane inflation without warped geometry is not viable due to compactification effects (in the simplified scenario where the inflaton is decoupled from the compactification moduli). We show that the inflationary scenario with branes at a small angle in this simplified scenario remains viable. We also point out that brane-anti-brane inflation may still be viable under some special conditions. We also discuss a way to treat potentials in compact spaces that should be useful in the analysis of more realistic brane inflationary scenarios.
In this letter we study the generation of gravitational waves during inflation from a 5D vacuum theory of gravity. Within this formalism, on an effective 4D de Sitter background, we recover the typical results obtained with 4D inflationary theory in general relativity, for the amplitude of gravitational waves generated during inflation. We also obtain a range of values for the amplitude of tensor to scalar ratio which is in agreement with COBE observations.
We study the spectrum of gravitational waves generated from inflation in the Randall-Sundrum braneworld. Since the inflationary gravitational waves are of quantum-mechanical origin, the initial configuration of perturbations in the bulk includes Kaluza-Klein quantum fluctuations as well as fluctuations in the zero mode. We show, however, that the initial fluctuations in Kaluza-Klein modes have no significant effect on the late time spectrum, irrespective of the energy scale of inflation and the equation of state parameter in the post-inflationary stage. This is done numerically, using the Wron…
The generation of gravitational waves during inflation due to the non-linear coupling of scalar and tensor modes is discussed. Two methods describing gravitational wave perturbations are used and compared: a covariant and local approach, as well as a metric-based analysis based on the Bardeen formalism. An application to slow-roll inflation is also described.
We study a mechanism to produce the circular polarization of primordial gravitational waves. The circular polarization is generated during the super-inflation driven by the Gauss-Bonnet term in the string-inspired cosmology. The instability in the tensor mode caused by the Gauss-Bonnet term and the parity violation due to the gravitational Chern-Simons term are the essential ingredients of the mechanism. We also discuss detectability of the produced circular polarization of gravitational waves. It turns out that the simple model of single-field inflation contradicts CMB observations. To circum…
Physical scenarios, leading to highly energetic stochastic gravitational waves backgrounds (for frequencies ranging from the $μ$Hz up to the GHz) are examined. In some cases the typical amplitude of the logarithmic energy spectrum can be even eight orders of magnitude larger than the ordinary inflationary prediction. Scaling violations in the frequency dependence of the energy density of the produced gravitons are discussed.
In many models of inflation, the period of accelerated expansion ends with preheating, a highly non-thermal phase of evolution during which the inflaton pumps energy into a specific set of momentum modes of field(s) to which it is coupled. This necessarily induces large, transient density inhomogeneities which can source a significant spectrum of gravitational waves. In this paper, we consider the generic properties of gravitational waves produced during preheating, perform detailed calculations of the spectrum for several specific inflationary models, and identify problems that require furthe…
The gravitational waves (GW) background generated in a double inflationary model, with two scalar fields mutually interacting through gravity only, and its relative contribution $T/S$ to large-angle temperature fluctuations of the relic microwave background are investigated in detail. The relation between $T/S$ and the slope of the GW spectrum $n_T$ is shown to be a discriminative test between a slow-roll inflation driven by one scalar field and more complicated models. It is found that the GW amplitude is not exactly zero in minima of spectral oscillations, this property being an observationa…
The initial quantum state during inflation may evolve to a highly squeezed quantum state due to the amplification of the time-dependent parameter, $ω_{phys}(k/a)$, which may be the modified dispersion relation in trans-Planckian physics. This squeezed quantum state is a nonclassical state that has no counterpart in the classical theory. We have considered the nonclassical states such as squeezed, squeezed coherent, and squeezed thermal states, and calculated the power spectrum of the gravitational wave perturbation when the mode leaves the horizon.
We show that in the vacuum inflation model, the gravitational baryogenesis mechanism will produce the baryon asymmetry. We analyze the evolution of entropy and baryon number in the vacuum inflation model. The comparison between dilution speed and the chemical potential may give a natural interpretation for decouple temperature of the gravitational baryogenesis interaction. From the result, the mechanism can give acceptable baryon-to-entropy ratio in the vacuum inflation model.
We investigate the behaviour of tensor fluctuations in Loop Quantum Cosmology, focusing on a class of scaling solutions which admit a near scale-invariant scalar field power spectrum. We obtain the spectral index of the gravitational field perturbations, and find a strong blue tilt in the power spectrum with $n_t \approx 2$. The amplitude of tensor modes are, therefore, suppressed by many orders of magnitude on large scales compared to those predicted by the standard inflationary scenario where $n_t \approx 0$.
The effects of the gravitational back reaction of cosmological perturbations are investigated in a phantom inflation model. The effective energy-momentum tensor of the gravitational back reaction of cosmological perturbations whose wavelengths are larger than the Hubble radius is calculated. Our results show that the effects of gravitational back reaction will counteract that of the phantom energy. It is demonstrated in a chaotic phantom inflation model that if the phantom field at the end of inflation is larger than a critical value determined by the necessary e-folds, the phantom inflation p…
Detection of the gravitational waves excited during inflation as quantum mechanical fluctuations is a key test of inflation and crucial to learning about the specifics of the inflationary model. We discuss the potential of Cosmic Background Radiation (CBR) anisotropy and polarization and of laser interferometers such as LIGO, VIRGO/GEO and LISA to detect these gravity waves.
The Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) detection of microwave background anisotropies may contain a component due to gravitational waves generated by inflation. It is shown that the gravitational waves from inflation might be seen using `beam-in-space' detectors, but not the Laser Interferometer Gravity Wave Observatory (LIGO). The central conclusion, dependent only on weak assumptions regarding the physics of inflation, is a surprising one. The larger the component of the COBE signal due to gravitational waves, the {\em smaller} the expected local gravitational wave signal.
We investigate the dependence of the gravitational wave spectrum from quintessential inflation on the reheating process. We consider two extreme reheating processes. One is the gravitational reheating by particle creation in the expanding universe in which the beginning of the radiation dominated epoch is delayed due to the presence of the epoch of domination of the kinetic energy of the inflaton (kination). The other is the instant preheating considered by Felder et al. in which the Universe becomes radiation dominated soon after the end of inflation. We find that the spectrum of the gravitat…
We propose a scenario for inflation based upon the braneworld picture, in which high-energy corrections to the Friedmann equation permit inflation to take place with potentials ordinarily too steep to sustain it. Inflation ends when the braneworld corrections begin to lose their dominance. Reheating may naturally be brought about via gravitational particle production, rather than the usual inflaton decay mechanism; the reheat temperature may be low enough to satisfy the gravitino bound and the Universe becomes radiation dominated early enough for nucleosynthesis. We illustrate the idea by cons…
We discuss the gravitational waves (GW) in the context of vector inflation. We derive the action for tensor perturbations and find that tachyonic instabilities are present in most (but not all) of the inflationary models with large fields. In contrast, the stability of the small field inflation ($A_μA^μ\ll\frac{1}{N}$) is ensured by the usual slow-roll conditions, where $N$ is the total number of fields. For example, the Coleman-Weinberg potential and the power-law inflation are always stable in the small fields limit with an approximately flat spectrum of GW. We also provide some examples whi…
Recently it was shown that an inflationary background can be realized by any $p$-form field non-minimally coupled to gravity. In this paper, we study gravitational waves generated during p-form inflation. Even though the background evolution is identical to that in conventional scalar field inflation, the behavior of gravitational waves is different in p-form inflation. In particular, we find that the propagation speed of gravitational waves differs from unity in 2- and 3-form inflationary models. We point out that the squared speed becomes negative in the large field models. The small field m…
We study gravitational waves generated during the inflationary epoch in presence of a decaying cosmological parameter on a 5D geometrical background which is Riemann flat. Two examples are considered, one with a constant cosmological parameter and the second with a decreasing one.
We consider the space-condensate inflation model to study the primordial gravitational waves generated in the early Universe. We calculate the energy spectrum of gravitational waves induced by the space-condensate inflation model for full frequency range with assumption that the phase transition between two consecutive regimes to be abrupt during evolution of the Universe. The suppression of energy spectrum is found in our model for the decreasing frequency of gravitational waves depending on the model parameter. To realize the suppression of energy spectrum of the primordial gravitational wav…
A simple inflationary model based on loop quantum cosmology is considered. Within this framework, we show that inflation does not necessarily erase the infor- mation prior to its onset, but that such information may leave its imprint in the energy-spectrum of the gravitational-waves generated at these earliest of times.
The four-fermion gravitational interaction is induced by torsion, and gets dominating on the Planck scale. The regular, axial-axial part of this interaction by itself does not stop the gravitational compression. However, the anomalous, vector-vector interaction results in a natural way both in big bounce and in inflation.

We study gravitational wave production in an expanding Universe during the first stages following inflation, and investigate the consequences of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the inflationary parameters for a power-law inflation model with a GB coupling term. Moreover, we perform the analyses on the preheating parameters involving the number of e-folds $N_{pre}$, and the temperature of thermalization $T_{th},$ and show that it's sensitive to the parameters $n$, and $γ$, the parameter $γ$ is proposed to connect the density energy at the end of inflation to the preheating energy density. We set a cor…
One of the most important issues in an inflationary theory as standard or quintessential inflation is the mechanism to reheat the universe after the end of the inflationary period in order to match with the Hot Big Bang universe. In quintessential inflation two mechanisms are frequently used, namely the reheating via gravitational particle production which is, as we will see, very efficient when the phase transition from the end of inflation to a kinetic regime (all the energy of the inflaton field is kinetic) is very abrupt, and the so-called instant preheating which is used for a very smooth…
In bounce inflation scenario, the inflation is singularity-free, while the advantages of inflation are reserved. We analytically calculate the power spectrum of its primordial gravitational waves (GWs), and show a universal result including the physics of the bounce phase. The spectrum acquires a cutoff at large scale, while the oscillation around the cutoff scale is quite drastic, which is determined by the details of bounce. Our work highlights that the primordial GWs at large scale may encode the physics of the bounce ever happened at about $\sim 60$ efolds before inflation.
We analyse the implications for inflationary models of the cosmic microwave background (cmb) anisotropy measured by COBE. Vacuum fluctuations during inflation generate an adiabatic density perturbation, and also gravitational waves. The ratio of these two contributions to the cmb anisotropy is given for an arbitrary slow-roll inflaton potential. Results from the IRAS/QDOT and POTENT galaxy surveys are used to normalise the spectrum of the density perturbation on the scale $20h^{-1}\Mpc$, so that the COBE measurement on the scale $10^3h^{-1}\Mpc$ provides a lower bound on the spectral index $n$…
We point out that detectable inflationary tensor modes can be generated by particle or string sources produced during inflation, consistently with the requirements for inflation and constraints from scalar fluctuations. We show via examples that this effect can dominate over the contribution from quantum fluctuations of the metric, occurring even when the inflationary potential energy is too low to produce a comparable signal. Thus a detection of tensor modes from inflation does not automatically constitute a determination of the inflationary Hubble scale.
We compute numerically the reheating temperature due to the gravitational production of conformally coupled superheavy particles during the phase transition from the end of inflation to the beginning of kination in two different Quintessential Inflation (QI) scenarios, namely Lorentzian Quintessential Inflation (LQI) and $α$-attractors in the context of Quintessential Inflation ($α$-QI). Once these superheavy particles have been created, they must decay into lighter ones to form a relativistic plasma, whose energy density will eventually dominate the one of the inflaton field in order to rehea…
We present detailed calculations for quantum-gravitational corrections to the power spectra of gauge-invariant scalar and tensor perturbations during inflation. This is done by performing a semiclassical Born-Oppenheimer type of approximation to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, from which we obtain a Schroedinger equation with quantum-gravitational correction terms. As a first step, we perform our calculation for a de Sitter universe and find that the correction terms lead to an enhancement of power on the largest scales.
In this work we shall study a possible pre-inflationary scenario for our Universe and how this might be realized by $f(R)$ gravity. Specifically, we shall introduce a scenario in which the Universe in the pre-inflationary era contracts until it reaches a minimum magnitude, and subsequently expands, slowly entering a slow-roll quasi-de Sitter inflationary era. This pre-inflationary bounce avoids the cosmic singularity, and for the eras before and after the quasi-de Sitter inflationary stage, approximately satisfies the string theory motivated scale factor duality $a(t)=a^{-1}(-t)$. We investiga…
We study the variational principle on a Hilbert-Einstein action in an extended geometry with torsion taking into account non-trivial boundary conditions. We obtain an effective energy-momentum tensor that has its source in the torsion, which represents the matter geometrically induced. We explore about the existence of magnetic monopoles and gravitational waves in this torsional geometry. We conclude that the boundary terms can be identified as possible sources for the cosmological constant and torsion as the source of magnetic monopoles. We examine an example in which gravitational waves are …
We argue that primordial gravitational waves have a spectral break and its information is quite useful for exploring the early universe. Indeed, such a spectral break can be a fingerprint of the end of inflation, and the amplitude and the frequency at the break can tell us the energy scale of inflation and the reheating temperature simultaneously. In order to investigate the spectral break, we give an analytic formula for evolution of the Hubble parameter around the end of inflation where the slow roll approximation breaks down. We also evaluate the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves a…
We consider gravitational wave production during inflation in type IIB string theory, and the possibility of observable gravitational waves in small field inflation. We show that the gauge field excitations on a set of coincident D7 branes, itself critical for moduli stabilization and hence intrinsic to inflation in string theory, coupled with axion fields from bulk fluxes, can act as a spectator sector during inflation. This results in a large production of chiral gravitational waves, even for relatively small values of the axion-gauge field coupling. We extend this to include a monodromy for…
It is well-known that the first-order phase transition (PT) will yield a stochastic gravitational waves (GWs) background with a logo-like spectrum. However, we show that when such a PT happened during the primordial inflation, the GWs spectrum brought by the PT will be reddened, which thus records the unique voiceprint of inflation. We assess the abilities of the GW detectors to detect the corresponding signal.
We consider the impact of thermal inflation -- a short, secondary period of inflation that can arise in supersymmetric scenarios -- on the stochastic gravitational wave background. We show that while the primordial inflationary gravitational wave background is essentially unchanged at CMB scales, it is massively diluted at solar system scales and would be unobservable by a BBO style experiment. Conversely, bubble collisions at the end of thermal inflation can generate a new stochastic background. We calculate the likely properties of the bubbles created during this phase transition, and show t…
We further analyze phenomenological implications of double axion monodromy inflation proposed in Ref. Phys. Rev. D 104, L081302 (2021), in gravitational wave physics. We show that in addition to chiral gravitational waves (GW) originating from gauge field instability, the model also predicts significant amount of non-chiral, scalar-induced gravitational waves, both peaking at around the same frequencies. We find that although chiral GW density has much larger peak, non-chiral GWs can dominate away from the peak as they decay at a slower rate. This provides an interesting GW signature to be pro…
One of the fundamental and yet untested predictions of inflationary models is the generation of a very weak cosmic background of gravitational radiation. We investigate the sensitivity required for a space-based gravitational wave laser interferometer with peak sensitivity at $\sim 1$ Hz to observe such signal as a function of the model parameters and compare it with indirect limits that can be set with data from present and future cosmic microwave background missions. We concentrate on signals predicted by slow-roll single field inflationary models and instrumental configurations such as thos…
We propose a scenario where preheating occurs for a specific duration that is parametrized by an e-folds number $N_{pre}$, our results suggest a direct correlation between the preheating duration and the density of gravitational waves (GWs) produced during this phase. Moreover, we investigate the consequences of the inflationary parameters on the $α$-attractor E model in the small $α$ limits. In this framework, we perform investigations on the preheating parameters involving the number of e-folds $N_{pre}$, and the temperature of reheating $T_{re}$, then we show that the parameter $n$ associat…
Accelerating dynamics from Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity are studied in a simplified conformal approach without matter. Explicit unification of inflation with late-time acceleration is realized within this singular inflation approach, which is similar to Odintsov-Oikonomou singular $f(R)$ inflation. Our model turns out to be consistent with the latest release of Planck data.
We study primordial gravitational waves from inflation in Randall-Sundrum braneworld model. The effect of small change of the Hubble parameter during inflation is investigated using a toy model given by connecting two de Sitter branes. We analyze the power spectrum of final zero-mode gravitons, which is generated from the vacuum fluctuations of both initial Kaluza-Klein modes and zero-mode. The amplitude of fluctuations is confirmed to agree with the four-dimensional one at low energies, whereas it is enhanced due to the normalization factor of zero-mode at high energies. We show that the five…
Motivated by recent progress in our understanding of the $B$-mode polarization of cosmic microwave background (CMB), which provides important information about the inflationary gravitational waves (IGWs), we study the possibility to acquire information about the early universe using future space-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors. We perform a detailed statistical analysis to estimate how well we can determine the reheating temperature after inflation as well as the amplitude, the tensor spectral index, and the running of the inflationary gravitational waves. We discuss how the accuracies…
We reveal the universality of short-term anisotropic inflation. As a demonstration, we study inflation with an exponential type gauge kinetic function which is ubiquitous in models obtained by dimensional reduction from higher dimensional fundamental theory. It turns out that an anisotropic inflation universally takes place in the later stage of conventional inflation. Remarkably, we find that primordial gravitational waves with a peak amplitude around $10^{-26}$ ~ $10^{-27}$ are copiously produced in high-frequency bands 10MHz~100MHz. If we could detect such gravitational waves in future, we …
We study the potential impact of detecting the inflationary gravitational wave background by the future space-based gravitational wave detectors, such as DECIGO and BBO. The signal-to-noise ratio of each experiment is calculated for chaotic/natural/hybrid inflation models by using the precise predictions of the gravitational wave spectrum based on numerical calculations. We investigate the dependence of each inflation model on the reheating temperature which influences the amplitude and shape of the spectrum, and find that the gravitational waves could be detected for chaotic/natural inflation…
It is often said that detecting a spectrum of primordial gravitational waves via observing B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background is the "Holy Grail" of inflation. The purpose of this short note is to point out that it is indeed of immense scientific interest to search for a signal of gravitational waves in B-mode polarization. However, rather than proving that inflation is the right paradigm of early universe cosmology, a positive signal of direct primordial B-mode polarization might well be due to other sources than inflation. In fact, a careful characterization of the spectr…
We study inflation driven by a dilaton and an axion, both of which are coupled to a SU(2) gauge field. We find that the inflation driven by the dilaton occurs in the early stage of inflation during which the gauge field grows due to the gauge kinetic function. When the energy density of magnetic fields catches up with that of electric fields, chromo-natural inflation takes over in the late stage of inflation, which we call delayed chromo-natural inflation. Thus, the delayed chromo-natural inflation driven by the axion and the gauge field is induced by the dilaton. The interesting outcome of th…
We investigate the possibility for a direct detection by future space interferometers of the stochastic gravitational wave (GW) background generated during the inflationary stage in a class of viable $Λ$CDM BSI models. At frequencies around $10^{-3}$Hz, maximal values $Ω_{gw}(ν)\sim 3\times 10^{-15}$ are found, an improvement of about one order of magnitude compared to single-field, slow-roll inflationary models. This is presumably not sufficient in order to be probed in the near future.
We show that Gravitational Waves are exponetially amplified in the inflationary phase in Brans-Dicke theory, so that it would be possible to detect them and in this way verify several features of physical reality.
A violation of the null energy condition (NEC) during inflation in a single-field inflation model will naturally enhance the amplitude of the parity violation effect (defined by $Δχ$) of inflationary primordial gravitational waves (GWs), provided the inflaton is non-minimally coupled to a gravitational Chern-Simons term. After going through the NEC-violating phase, the Universe enters subsequent slow-roll inflation with a higher energy scale (i.e., a greater Hubble parameter $H$), which results in an enhanced nearly scale-invariant power spectrum (i.e., $P_{\rm T}$) of inflationary primordial …
We propose a 3 + 1 dimensional model of gravity which results in inflation at early times, followed by radiation- and matter-dominated epochs and a subsequent acceleration at late times. Both the inflation and late time acceleration are nearly de Sitter with a large hierarchy between the effective cosmological constants. There is no scalar field agent of inflation, and the transition from the inflation to the radiation-dominated period is smooth. This model is designed so that it yields, at the cost of giving up on Lorentz invariance in the gravitational sector, the Dirac-Born-Infeld type conf…
We study the effects of the Gauss-Bonnet term on the energy spectrum of inflationary gravitational waves. The models of inflation are classified into two types based on their predictions for the tensor power spectrum: red-tilted ($n_T<0$) and blue-tilted spectra ($n_T>0$), respectively, and then the energy spectra of the gravitational waves are calculated for each type of model. We find that the gravitational wave spectra are enhanced depending on the model parameter if the predicted inflationary tensor spectra have a blue tilt, whereas they are suppressed for the spectra that have a red tilt.…
Thermal history of the Universe between inflation and big-bang nucleosynthesis has not yet been revealed observationally. It will be probed by the detection of primordial gravitational waves generated during inflation, which contain information on the reheating temperature as well as the equation of state of the Universe after inflation. Based on Fisher information formalism, we examine how accurately the tensor-to-scalar ratio and reheating temperature after inflation can be simultaneously determined with space-based gravitational wave detectors such as the DECI-hertz Interferometer Gravitati…
We consider inflation driven by an axion-like particle coupled to an SU(2) gauge sector via a Chern-Simons term. Known as chromo-natural inflation, this scenario is in tension with CMB observations. In order to remedy this fact and preserve both the symmetries and the intriguing gravitational wave phenomenology exhibited by the model, we explore the non-minimal coupling of the axion-inflaton to the Einstein tensor. We identify regions of parameter space corresponding to a viable cosmology at CMB scales. We also highlight the possibility of a large and chiral gravitational wave signal at small …
Quantum gravitational back-reaction offers the potential of simultaneously resolving the problem of the cosmological constant and providing a natural model of inflation in which scalars play no special role. In this model inflation begins because the cosmological constant is not unnaturally small. It ends through the accumulated gravitational interaction between virtual gravitons which are ripped apart by the inflationary expansion. Although perturbative techniques can be used to study the effect as long as it remains weak, they break down when back-reaction begins to exert an appreciable effe…
We include the single graviton loop contribution to the linearized Einstein equation. Explicit results are obtained for one loop corrections to the propagation of gravitational radiation. Although suppressed by a minuscule loop-counting parameter, these corrections are enhanced by the square of the number of inflationary e-foldings. One consequence is that perturbation theory breaks down for a very long epoch of primordial inflation. Another consequence is that the one loop correction to the tensor power spectrum might be observable, in the far future, after the full development of 21cm cosmol…
Particle production from vacuum fluctuations during inflation is briefly revisited. The moduli problem occurring with light particles produced at the end of inflation is addressed, namely the fact that some results are in disagreement with nucleosynthesis constrains. A universal solution to this problem is found which leads to reasonable reheating temperatures in all cases. It invokes the assumption that, immediately after inflation, the moduli evolve like non-relativistic matter. The assumption is justified in the context of massive chaotic inflation were, at the end of inflation, the univers…
