When a negative slope of the dispersion curve is encountered, the propagating light may be either 'fast light' or 'backward propagating'. We show that causality considerations select only one of which for each scenario, and demonstrate that the same photonic (plasmonic) system can support both type of solutions depending on parameters.
The materials having negative permittivity and negative permeability, which are labeled as double-negative (DNG) materials, have attracted much attention because of their unusual physical properties, which are different from those of conventional double-positive (DPS) materials. Animations obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) are provided showing how a transient sinusoidal signal that starts at t=0 propagates in the DPS and DNG waveguides. Three types of waveguides are considered: a slab or grounded slab inside the cladding medium and a parallel-plate waveguide filled wi…
A theoretical analysis of the lateral displacement (Goos-Hänchen shift) of spatially limited beams reflected from Attenuated Total Reflection (ATR) devices in the Otto configuration is presented when backward surface plasmon polaritons are excited at the interface between a positive refractive index slab and a semiinfinite metamaterial with negative refractive index. First, the stationary phase approximation and a phenomenological model based on the properties of the complex poles and zeroes of the reflection coefficient are used to demonstrate that: i) the excitation of backward surface waves…
The extraordinary properties of resonant four-wave mixing of backward waves in doped negative-index materials are investigated. The feasibility of independent engineering of negative refractive index and nonlinear optical response as well as quantum control of the nonlinear propagation process in such composites is shown due to the coherent energy transfer from the control to the signal field. Laser-induced transparency, quantum switching, frequency-tunable narrow-band filtering, amplification, and realizing a miniature mirrorless optical parametric generator of the entangled backward and ordi…
Comparative analysis of second harmonic generation in ordinary and backward-wave settings is presented. Extraordinary properties of frequency doubling nonlinear optical reflectivity and pulse shaping through phase matching of ordinary and backward electromagnetic waves in the nanowaveguides with mixed negative/positive spatial dispersion is demonstrated with numerical simulations.
Besides the well-known negative refraction, a negative refractive-index material can exhibit another two hallmark features, which are the inverse Doppler effect and backward Cherenkov radiation. The former is known as the motion-induced frequency shift that is contrary to the normal Doppler effect, and the latter refers to the Cherenkov radiation whose cone direction is opposite to the source's motion. Here we combine these two features and discuss the Doppler effect inside the backward Cherenkov cone. We reveal that the Doppler effect is not always inversed but can be normal in negative refra…
Extraordinary features of optical parametric amplification of Stokes electromagnetic waves are investigated, which originate from three-wave mixing of two ordinary electromagnetic and one backward phonon wave with negative group velocity. A similarity with the counterpart in the negative-index plasmonic metamaterials and differences with those utilizing contra-propagating ordinary electromagnetic waves as well as electromagnetic and acoustic phonon waves are shown. They stem from backwardness of optical phonons with negative dispersion. Nonlinear-optical photonic devices with the properties si…
Simple dispersion relations for the guided modes in a grounded DNG/DPS bilayer slab are given in terms of normalized parameters. Relations corresponding to the grounded single-layer DNG slab are refound as specific cases. Numerical examples are given showing dispersion curves of the lower order modes and the respective total normalized power carried on the propagation direction. Snapshots obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method are provided showing the electromagnetic field inside the grounded DNG/DPS bilayer slabs. Since an important characteristic of the guided modes in the slab…
The concept of negative refraction is attracting a lot of attention. The initial ideas and the misconceptions that have arisen are discussed in sufficient detail to understand the conceptual structure that binds negative refraction to the existence of backward wave and forward wave phenomena. A presentation of the properties of isotropic media supporting backward waves is followed by a discussion of negative phase velocity media, causality, anisotropic crystals and some connections to photonic crystals. The historical background is always coupled to a detailed presentation of all the issues. T…
The coupling between negative and positive index medium waveguides is investigated theoretically in this paper. A coupled mode theory is developed for such a waveguide system and its validity is verified. Interesting phenomena in the coupled waveguides are demonstrated, which occur in the case when the negative index medium waveguide in isolation guides its mode backward. A new type of coupled mode solution that varies exponentially with the coupling length is found in the special case when the propagation constants of two individual waveguides are nearly the same. A coupler operating in this …
Using complex plane analysis we show that left-handed slab may support either leaky slab waves, which are backward because of negative refraction, or leaky surface waves, which are backward or forward depending on the propagation direction of the surface wave itself. Moreover, there is a general connection between the reflection coefficient of the left-handed slab and the one of the corresponding right-handed slab (with opposite permittivity and permeability) so that leaky slab modes are excited for the same angle of incidence of the impinging beam for both structures. Many negative giant late…
A backward-wave slab based on a capacitively and inductively loaded three-dimensional transmission-line network is designed in such a way that impedance-matching with free space is obtained. To enable field propagation from free space to the network and vice versa, the use of a transition layer is proposed. Matching of the designed network with free space and negative refraction occurring at the slab interfaces are confirmed with full-wave simulations.
Second harmonic generation and optical parametric amplification in negative-index metamaterials (NIMs) are studied. The opposite directions of the wave vector and the Poynting vector in NIMs results in a "backward" phase-matching condition, causing significant changes in the Manley-Rowe relations and spatial distributions of the coupled field intensities. It is shown that absorption in NIMs can be compensated by backward optical parametric amplification. The possibility of distributed-feedback parametric oscillation with no cavity has been demonstrated. The feasibility of the generation of ent…
Backward waves and negative refraction are shown to exist in plasmonic crystals whose lattice cell size is a very small fraction of the vacuum wavelength (less than 1/40th in an illustrative example). Such ``quasi-homogeneity'' is important, in particular, for high-resolution imaging. Real and complex Bloch bands are computed using the recently developed finite-difference calculus of ``Flexible Local Approximation MEthods'' (FLAME) that produces linear eigenproblems, as opposed to quadratic or nonlinear ones typical for other techniques. FLAME dramatically improves the accuracy by incorporatin…
We study second harmonic generation in a negative index material cavity. The transmission spectrum shows a gap between the electric and magnetic plasma frequencies, so that localized and anti-localized states are allowed at the band edges. The process is made efficient by local phase matching conditions between a forward-propagating pump and a backward-propagating second harmonic signal. By simultaneously exciting the cavity with counter-propagating pulses one is able to enhance or inhibit absorption and stimulated processes. The control parameter is the relative phase difference between the t…
The paper studies the interaction of Lamb waves with the free edge of a plate. The reflection coefficients of a Lamb mode at a plate free edge are calculated using a semi-analytical method, as a function of frequency and angle of incidence. The conversion between forward and backward Lamb modes is thoroughly investigated. It is shown that, at the zero-group velocity (ZGV) frequency, the forward $S_1$ Lamb mode fully converts into the backward $S_{2b}$ Lamb mode at normal incidence. Besides, this conversion is very efficient over most of the angular spectrum and remains dominant at frequencies …
The extraordinary properties of laser-induced transparency of a negative-index slab and parametric amplification for a backward-wave signal are investigated. The effects of the idler absorption and phase mismatch on the amplification of the signal are studied, and the feasibility of ensuring robust transparency for a broad range of control field intensities and slab thicknesses is shown. A particular option consisting of the independent engineering of a strong four-wave mixing response and the negative refractive index is proposed and its specific features are investigated. The feasibility of …
Electromagnetic energy backflow is a phenomenon occurring in regions where the direction of the Poynting vector is opposite to that of the propagation of the wave field. It is particularly remarkable in the nonparaxial regime and has been exhibited in the focal region of sharply focused beams, for vector Bessel beams, and vector-valued spatiotemporally localized waves. A detailed study is undertaken of this phenomenon and the conditions for its appearance are examined in detail in the case of a superposition of four plane waves in free space, the simplest electromagnetic arrangement for the ob…
A photon carries a momentum of, so one may anticipate light to "push" on any object standing in its path via the scattering force. In the absence of intensity gradient, using a light beam to pull a particle backwards is counter intuitive. Here, we show that it is possible to realize a backward scattering force which pulls a particle all the way towards the source without an equilibrium point. The underlining physics is the maximization of forward scattering via interference of the radiation multipoles. We show explicitly that the necessary condition to realize a negative (pulling) optical forc…
Negative-index refraction is achieved in a lamellar composite with epsilon-negative (ENG) and mu-negative (MNG) materials stacked alternatively. Based on the effective medium approximation, simultaneously negative effective permittivity and permeability of such a lamellar composite are obtained theoretically and further proven by full-wave simulations. Consequently, the famous left-handed metamaterial comprising split ring resonators and wires is interpreted as an analogy of such an ENG-MNG lamellar composite. In addition, beyond the effective medium approximation, the propagating field squeez…
The momentum and radiation pressure of light in negative-index metamaterials (NIMs) are commonly expected to reverse their direction from what is observed for normal materials. The negative refraction and inverse Doppler effect of light in NIMs have been experimentally observed, but the equally surprising phenomenon, the negative radiation pressure of light, still lacks experimental verification. We show by simulating the exact position- and time-dependent field-material dynamics in NIMs that the momentum and radiation pressure of light in NIMs can be either positive or negative depending on t…
We study numerically the propagation of two-color light pulses through a metamaterial doped with active atoms such that the carrier frequencies of the pulses are in resonance with two atomic transitions in the $Λ$ configuration and that one color propagates in the regime of positive refraction and the other in the regime of negative refraction. In such a metamaterial, one resonant color of light propagates with positive and the other with negative group velocity. We investigate nonlinear interaction of these forward- and backward-propagating waves, and find self-trapped waves, counter-propagat…
Planar waveguides can limit the transmission of electromagnetic waves in a specific direction and have a wide range of applications in filters, sensors, and energy-transfer devices. However, given the increasing demand for planar integrated photonics, new waveguides are required with excellent characteristics such as more functionality, greater efficiency, and smaller size. In this work, we report the experimental results for a subwavelength planar microwave-regime waveguide fabricated from circuit-based magnetic hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM) and develop the associated theory. HMM is a special…
Backwards-wave (BW) materials that have simultaneously negative real parts of their electric permittivity and magnetic permeability can support waves where phase and power propagation occur in opposite directions. These materials were predicted to have many unusual electromagnetic properties, among them amplification of the near-field of a point source, which could lead to the perfect reconstruction of the source field in an image [J. Pendry, Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{85}, 3966 (2000)]. Often systems containing BW materials are simulated using the finite-difference time-domain technique. We sho…
Since the 1983 definition of the speed of light in vacuum as a fundamental constant with the exact value of 299792458 m/s the question remains as to what apart from the wavefront travels at that speed. It is commonly assumed that the entire wave-packet or an impulse of the electromagnetic radiation in free space does. Here it is shown, both theoretically and experimentally, that there exists a region close to the source, where, while the wave-front travels at the speed of light, the individual impulses comprising the body of the wave-packet appear to slow down and even go backwards in time. Th…
The phenomenon of negative refraction generally requires negative refractive indices or phase discontinuities, which can be realized using metamaterials or metasurfaces. Recent theories have proposed a novel mechanism for negative refraction based on synthetic gauge fields, which affect classical waves as if they were charged particles in electromagnetic fields, but this has not hitherto been demonstrated in experiment. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of gauge-field-induced negative refraction in a twisted bilayer acoustic metamaterial. The bilayer twisting produces a synthet…
