In a recent paper, Kaye and Wong proved the following result, which they considered to belong to the folklore of mathematical logic.
THEOREM: The first-order theories of Peano arithmetic and ZF with the axiom of infinity negated are bi-interpretable: that is, they are mutually interpretable with interpretations that are inverse to each other.
In this note, I describe a theory of sets that stands in the same relation to the bounded arithmetic IDelta0 + exp. Because of the weakness of this theory of sets, I cannot straightforwardly adapt Kaye and Wong's interpretation of arithmetic in set theory. Instead, I am forced to produce a different interpretation.
Presburger Arithmetic $\mathop{\mathbf{PrA}}\nolimits$ is the true theory of natural numbers with addition. We consider linear orderings interpretable in Presburger Arithmetic and establish various necessary and sufficient conditions for interpretability depending on dimension $n$ of interpretation. We note this problem is relevant to the interpretations of Presburger Arithmetic in itself, as well as the characterization of automatic orderings. For $n=2$ we obtain the complete criterion of interpretability.
Büchi arithmetics BA_n, n >= 2, are extensions of Presburger arithmetic with an unary functional symbol V_n(x) denoting the largest power of n that divides x. Definability of a set in BA_n is equivalent to its recognizability by a finite automaton receiving numbers in their n-ary expansion. We show that Büchi arithmetics BA_n and BA_m are bi-interpretable for any n,m. Furthermore, we establish that any interpretation of some structure in BA_n is isomorphic to some one-dimensional interpretation; however, this isomorphism must not be BA_n-definable.
Presburger Arithmetic is the true theory of natural numbers with addition. We study interpretations of Presburger Arithmetic in itself. The main result of this paper is that all self-interpretations are definably isomorphic to the trivial one. Here we consider interpretations that might be multi-dimensional. We note that this resolves a conjecture by A. Visser. In order to prove the result we show that all linear orderings that are interpretable in $(\mathbb{N};+)$ are scattered orderings with the finite Hausdorff rank and that the ranks are bounded in the terms of the dimensions of the respec…
In this paper, we formalize Sprague-Grundy theory for combinatorial games in bounded arithmetic. We show that in the presence of Sprague-Grundy numbers, a fairly weak axioms capture PSPACE.
Presburger arithmetic PrA is the true theory of natural numbers with addition. We study interpretations of PrA in itself. We prove that all one-dimensional self-interpretations are definably isomorphic to the identity self-interpretation. In order to prove the results we show that all linear orders that are interpretable in (N,+) are scattered orders with the finite Hausdorff rank and that the ranks are bounded in terms of the dimension of the respective interpretations. From our result about self-interpretations of PrA it follows that PrA isn't one-dimensionally interpretable in any of its fi…
This paper deals with three tools to compare proof-theoretic strength of formal arithmetical theories: interpretability, $Π^0_1$-conservativity and proving restricted consistency. It is well known that under certain conditions these three notions are equivalent and this equivalence is often referred to as the Orey-Hájek characterization of interpretability. In this paper we look with detail at the Orey-Hájek characterization and study what conditions are needed and in what meta-theory the characterizations can be formalized.
We consider the foundational relation between arithmetic and set theory. Our goal is to criticize the construction of standard arithmetic models as providing grounds for arithmetic truth (even in a relative sense). Our method is to emphasize the incomplete picture of both theories and treat models as their syntactical counterparts. Insisting on the incomplete picture will allow us to argue in favor of the revisability of the standard model interpretation. We then show that it is hopeless to expect that the relative grounding provided by a standard interpretation can resist being revisable. We …
This paper presents a novel proof of the conservativity of the intuitionistic theory of strictly positive fixpoints, $\widehat{\mathrm{ID}}{}_{1}^{\mathrm{i}}$, over Heyting arithmetic (HA), originally proved in full generality by Arai (2011). The proof embeds $\widehat{\mathrm{ID}}{}_{1}^{\mathrm{i}}$ into the corresponding theory over Beeson's logic of partial terms and then uses two consecutive interpretations, a realizability interpretation of this theory into the subtheory generated by almost negative fixpoints, and a direct interpretation into Heyting arithmetic with partial terms using …
We present a bounded modified realisability and a bounded functional interpretation of intuitionistic nonstandard arithmetic with nonstandard principles. The functional interpretation is the intuitionistic counterpart of Ferreira and Gaspar's functional interpretation and has similarities with Van den Berg, Briseid and Safarik's functional interpretation but replacing finiteness by majorisability. We give a threefold contribution: constructive content and proof-theoretical properties of nonstandard arithmetic; filling a gap in the literature; being in line with nonstandard methods to analyse c…
We prove that the theory of the extensional compositional truth predicate for the language of arithmetic with $Δ_0$-induction scheme for the truth predicate and the full arithmetical induction scheme is not conservative over Peano Arithmetic. In addition, we show that a slightly modified theory of truth actually proves the global reflection principle over the base theory.
The main goal of this paper is to formulate a constructive analogue of Ackermann's observation about finite set theory and arithmetic. We will see that Heyting arithmetic is bi-interpretable with $\mathsf{CZF^{fin}}$, the finitary version of $\mathsf{CZF}$. We also examine bi-interpretability between subtheories of finitary $\mathsf{CZF}$ and Heyting arithmetic based on the modification of Fleischmann's hierarchy of formulas, and the set of hereditarily finite sets over $\mathsf{CZF}$, which turns out to be a model of $\mathsf{CZF^{fin}}$ but not a model of finitary $\mathsf{IZF}$.

We present several known formalizations of theorems from computational complexity in bounded arithmetic and formalize the PCP theorem in the theory PV1 (no formalization of this theorem was known). This includes a formalization of the existence and of some properties of the (n,d,λ)-graphs in PV1.
We study variants of Buss's theories of bounded arithmetic axiomatized by induction schemes disallowing the use of parameters, and closely related induction inference rules. We put particular emphasis on $\hatΠ^b_i$ induction schemes, which were so far neglected in the literature. We present inclusions and conservation results between the systems (including a witnessing theorem for $T^i_2$ and $S^i_2$ of a new form), results on numbers of instances of the axioms or rules, connections to reflection principles for quantified propositional calculi, and separations between the systems.
The problem of $Π_1-$separating the hierarchy of bounded arithmetic has been studied in the paper. It is shown that the notion of Herbrand Consistency, in its full generality, cannot $Π_1-$separate the theory ${\rm IΔ_0+\bigwedge_jΩ_j}$ from ${\rm IΔ_0}$; though it can $Π_1-$separate ${\rm IΔ_0+Exp}$ from ${\rm IΔ_0}$. This extends a result of L. A. Kołodziejczyk (2006), by showing the unprovability of the Herbrand Consistency of ${\rm IΔ_0}$ in the theory ${\rm IΔ_0+\bigwedge_jΩ_j}$.
We study the logic obtained by endowing the language of first-order arithmetic with second-order measure quantifiers. This new kind of quantification allows us to express that the argument formula is true in a certain portion of all possible interpretations of the quantified variable. We show that first-order arithmetic with measure quantifiers is capable of formalizing simple results from probability theory and, most importantly, of representing every recursive random function. Moreover, we introduce a realizability interpretation of this logic in which programs have access to an oracle from …
In late 90's G.Takeuti and Y.Yasumoto gave forcing constructions for bounded arithmetic. We will reformulate their constructions using two-sort bounded arithmetic and prove the followings. 1. Generic extensions are related with P=NP problem. 2. J.Krajicek's forcing constructions can be given as Takeuti-Yasumoto forcing. 3. We can either satisfy or falsify the dual weak pigeonhole principles in generic extensions.
A computational flow is a pair consisting of a sequence of computational problems of a certain sort and a sequence of computational reductions among them. In this paper we will develop a theory for these computational flows and we will use it to make a sound and complete interpretation for bounded theories of arithmetic. This property helps us to decompose a first order arithmetical proof to a sequence of computational reductions by which we can extract the computational content of low complexity statements in some bounded theories of arithmetic such as $IΔ_0$, $T^k_n$, $IΔ_0+EXP$ and $PRA$. I…
This paper presents proof that Buss's $S^2_2$ can prove the consistency of a fragment of Cook and Urquhart's $\mathrm{PV}$ from which induction has been removed but substitution has been retained. This result improves Beckmann's result, which proves the consistency of such a system without substitution in bounded arithmetic $S^1_2$. Our proof relies on the notion of "computation" of the terms of $\mathrm{PV}$. In our work, we first prove that, in the system under consideration, if an equation is proved and either its left- or right-hand side is computed, then there is a corresponding computati…
This paper proves Buss's hierarchy of bounded arithmetics $S^1_2 \subseteq S^2_2 \subseteq \cdots \subseteq S^i_2 \subseteq \cdots$ does not entirely collapse. More precisely, we prove that, for a certain $D$, $S^1_2 \subsetneq S^{2D+5}_2$ holds. Further, we can allow any finite set of true quantifier free formulas for the BASIC axioms of $S^1_2, S^2_2, \ldots$. By Takeuti's argument, this implies $\mathrm{P} \neq \mathrm{NP}$. Let $\mathbf{Ax}$ be a certain formulation of BASIC axioms. We prove that $S^1_2 \not\vdash \mathrm{Con}(\mathrm{PV}^-_1(D) + \mathbf{Ax})$ for sufficiently large $D$, …
We study a new class of NP search problems, those which can be proved total using standard combinatorial reasoning based on approximate counting. Our model for this kind of reasoning is the bounded arithmetic theory $\mathrm{APC}_2$ of [Jeřábek 2009]. In particular, the Ramsey and weak pigeonhole search problems lie in the new class. We give a purely computational characterization of this class and show that, relative to an oracle, it does not contain the problem CPLS, a strengthening of PLS. As CPLS is provably total in the theory $T^2_2$, this shows that $\mathrm{APC}_2$ does not prove every…
The notion of bounded expansion captures uniform sparsity of graph classes and renders various algorithmic problems that are hard in general tractable. In particular, the model-checking problem for first-order logic is fixed-parameter tractable over such graph classes. With the aim of generalizing such results to dense graphs, we introduce classes of graphs with structurally bounded expansion, defined as first-order interpretations of classes of bounded expansion. As a first step towards their algorithmic treatment, we provide their characterization analogous to the characterization of classes…
