The effect of Zn substitution on the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, was investigated for the La2-xSrxCu1-yZnyO4 (Zn-LSCO) compounds over a wide range of hole concentration, p (= x), and Zn content (y) in the CuO2 plane. Zn induced rate of suppression of Tc, dTc/dy, was found to be strongly p-dependent and showed a systematic variation with hole concentration, except in the vicinity of p ~ 0.12, i.e., near the so-called 1/8th anomaly where the charge/spin stripe correlations are at its strongest in La2-xSrxCuO4. Near p ~ 0.12, the static striped charge ordering is widely believed to dominate the T-p phase diagram. dTc/dy decreased strongly around this hole concentration i.e., Zn became less effective in degrading Tc near p ~ 0.12. This observation is indicative of an intricate and competing interplay among the superconducting, pseudogap, and stripe correlations in Zn-LSCO.
We investigate the upper critical field in a stripe--phase and in the presence of a phenomenological pseudogap. Our results indicate that the formation of stripes affects the Landau orbits and results in an enhancement of $H_{c2}$. On the other hand, phenomenologically introduced pseudogap leads to a reduction of the upper critical field. This effect is of particular importance when the magnitude of the gap is of the order of the superconducting transition temperature. We have found that a suppression of the upper critical field takes place also for the gap that originates from the charge--den…
This article is devoted to a discussion of stripe and electron-nematic order and their connection to electronic properties in the pseudogap regime of copper-oxide superconductors. We review basic properties of these symmetry-breaking ordering phenomena as well as proposals which connect them to quantum-oscillation measurements. Experimental data indicate that these orders are unlikely to be the cause of the pseudogap phenomenon, implying that they occur on top of the pseudogap state which itself is of different origin. Specifically, we discuss the idea that the non-superconducting pseudogap gr…
Doping dependence of the electronic structure of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) has been systematically studied in a series of photoemission measurements. The unusual spectral features in the underdoped regime are attributed to the formation of dynamical stripes and the opening of large and small pseudogaps.
We study the electronic structure within a system of phase-decoupled one-dimensional superconductors coexisting with stripe spin and charge density wave order. This system has a nodal Fermi surface (Fermi arc) in the form of a hole pocket and an antinodal pseudogap. The spectral function in the antinodes is approximately particle-hole symmetric contrary to the gapped regions just outside the pocket. We find that states at the Fermi energy are extended whereas states near the pseudogap energy have localization lengths as short as the inter-stripe spacing. We consider pairing which has either lo…
A new model of high-T_c superconductivity (HTSC) has been developed by us which we find is able to explain almost all the HTSC properties, like high T_c, origin and nature of NSPG (normal state pseudogap), anomalous superconducting state (SS) energy gap (SSEG) properties, absence of NMR spin relaxation rate coherence peak, existence of NSPG below T_c, nature of high-T_c magnetic superconductivity, external magnetic field (H) dependence of the NSPG formation temperature T*, etc. The coexistence of NSPG and SS BCS energy gap (EG), below T_C, has been predicted by the model before its experimenta…
The details of the pseudogap origin and other gap related properties discussed earlier for cuprates, in the framework of the paired cluster (PC) model, using three dimensional (3D) electronic density of states (DOS), are shown to remain valid even when a two dimensional (2D) cuprate electronic DOS is used. Similarly the stripe phase description is also shown to be similar for the 3D and 2D cases. These results confirm the PC model's capability in explaining the high-Tc superconductivity properties.
Underdoped cuprates exhibit a normal-state pseudogap, and their spins and doped carriers tend to spatially separate into 1- or 2-D stripes. Some view these as central to superconductivity, others as peripheral and merely competing. Using La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$O$_4$ we show that an oxygen isotope effect in $T_c$ and in the superfluid density can be used to distinguish between the roles of stripes and pseudogap and also to detect the presence of impurity scattering. We conclude that stripes and pseudogap are distinct, and both compete and coexist with superconductivity.
The phase diagram of superconducting copper oxides is calculated as a function of doping based on a theory of dynamic stripe induced superconductivity. The two major conclusions from the theory and the numerical analysis are that T* (the pseudogap onset) and Tc (superconductivity onset) are correlated through the pseudogap, which induces a gap in the single particle energies that persists into the superconducting state. By decreasing the doping the pseudogap Delta* increases and T* increases, but when Delta* exceeds a certain critical value the superconducting transition temperature Tc is supp…
Doped Mott insulators have been shown to have a strong propensity to form patterns of holes and spins often referred to as stripes. In copper-oxides, doping also gives rise to the pseudogap state, which transforms into a high temperature superconductor with sufficient doping or by reducing the temperature. A long standing question has been the interplay between pseudogap, which is generic to all hole-doped cuprates, and stripes, whose static form occurs in only one family of cuprates over a narrow range of the phase diagram. Here we examine the spatial reorganization of electronic states with …
The effects of planar hole content, p, on the static magnetic susceptibility, chi(T), of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-delta polycrystalline samples were investigated over a wide range of Ca (x) and oxygen contents. Non-magnetic Ca2+, in the 3p6 state, induces a Curie-like contribution to chi(T) that increases systematically and non-linearly with x but is almost independent of p. We argue that this arises from statistical clusters containing two or more nearest neighbor Ca atoms. We have again found that the pseudogap in the quasi-particle spectral weight appears abruptly below a planar hole content p = 0.1…
The electronic structure of the high-T_c cuprates is studied on the basis of both "large-U" and "small-U" orbitals. A striped structure is obtained, and three types of carriers: polaron-like "stripons" carrying charge, "quasielectrons'' carrying charge and spin, and "svivons" carrying spin and lattice distortion. Anomalous properties of the cuprates and specifically their transport properties are derived. Pairing is found to result from transitions between pair states of quasielectrons and stripons through the exchange of svivons. The pairing results in superconductivity when the stripons cond…
We elaborate on several observable consequences of the Quantum-Critical-Point scenario. In particular we show that the strong k-dependent scattering of the quasiparticles with the quasi-critical charge and spin fluctuations reproduces the main features of the low-energy spectral weights and of the observed Fermi surfaces. In the underdoped cuprates the attractive k-dependent charge scattering drives the formation of the pseudogap at the M points below the crossover temperature T^*. In this context we discuss models for pseudogap formation with relevant scattering in the particle-particle and p…
We briefly summarize two related calculations. First, we demonstrate that the instabilities (either nesting or pairing) associated with the high-T_c cuprates can be described by an SO(6) transformation group. There are two independent 6-dimensional representations (`superspins'). One superspin combines Zhang's 5-component superspin with a flux phase instability; the other involves a charge density wave, s-wave superconductivity, and an exotic spin current. The second calculation is a self-consistent slave boson calculation, which provides a good description of the doping dependence of the phot…
The individual k\parallel and k\perp stripe excitations in fluctuating spin-charge stripes have not been observed yet. In Raman scattering if we set, for example, incident and scattered light polarizations to two possible stripe directions, we can observe the fluctuating stripe as if it is static. Using the different symmetry selection rule between the B1g two-magnon scattering and the B1g and B2g isotropic electronic scattering, we succeeded to obtain the k\parallel and k\perp strip magnetic excitations separately in La2-xSrxCuO4. Only the k\perp stripe excitations appear in the wide-energy i…
The effect of Zn substitution in the CuO2 plane on the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, was studied for the La2-xSrxCu1-yZnyO4 and YBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-d compounds over a wide range of hole concentration, p, and Zn content (y). Zn induced rate of suppression of Tc, dTc(p)/dy, was found to be strongly p-dependent and showed a monotonic variation with p, except in the vicinity of p ~ 0.125, i.e., near the so-called 1/8th anomaly where the charge/spin stripe correlations are at their strongest in hole doped cuprates. The magnitude of dTc(p)/dy decreased significantly around this hole conc…
We present studies of the electronic structure of La2-xBaxCuO4, a system where the superconductivity is strongly suppressed as static spin and charge orders or "stripes" develop near the doping level of x=1/8. Using angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy, we detect an energy gap at the Fermi surface with magnitude consistent with d-wave symmetry and with linear density of states, vanishing only at four nodal points, even when superconductivity disappears at x=1/8. Thus, the non-superconducting, "striped" state at x=1/8 is consistent with a phase incoherent d-wave superc…
Suppression of T_c in bilayer bismuth and thallium cuprates, by substitution of Co impurities at Cu sites, are taken for examination. T_c suppression data on differently doped Bi2212 and Tl2212 are analysed within the unitary pair-breaking formalism due to Abrikosov and Gorkov, by fitting data points to a phenomenological relation valid for weak coupling d-wave superconductors. Values of the pseudogap magnitude at each doping are thereby estimated within a "fermi-level density of states suppression" picture. Pseudogap magnitude from our estimation is observed to have a correspondence with a re…
The effect of Zn substitution on the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, was investigated for the sintered Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-delta compounds over a wide range of hole concentration per CuO2 plane, p. Ca substitution enabled us to study the deeply overdoped region. p was changed by changing the oxygen deficiency (delta). A strongly p-dependent rate of suppression of Tc with Zn (dTc/dy) was found. From the analysis of the dTc(p)/dy and Tc(p,y) data, we found that the optimum hole content, popt, shifts to higher values with increasing Zn and superconductivity is at its strongest whe…
Recently we have used spectroscopic mapping with the scanning tunneling microscope to probe modulations of the electronic density of states in single crystals of the high temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi-2212) as a function of temperature [C. V. Parker et al., Nature (London) 468, 677 (2010)]. These measurements showed Cu-O bond-oriented modulations that form below the pseudogap temperature with a temperature-dependent energy dispersion displaying different behaviors in the superconducting and pseudogap states. Here we demonstrate that quasiparticle scattering off impurities does…
We present a model for the combined nematic and `smectic' or stripe-like orders seen in recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments in cuprates. We model the stripe order as an electronic charge density wave with associated Peierls distortion -- a `Pomeranchuk wave'. Disorder restricts this primary order to nanoscale domains, while secondary coupling to strain generates nematic order with considerably longer range.
A quantum critical point in the single layer, hole-doped cuprate system La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (Nd-LSCO), near $x$ = 0.23 has been proposed as an organizing principle for understanding high temperature superconductivity. Our earlier neutron diffraction work on Nd-LSCO at optimal and high doping revealed static parallel spin stripes to exist out to the QCP and slightly beyond, at $x$ = 0.24 and 0.26. We examine more closely the parallel spin stripe order parameter in Nd-LSCO in both zero magnetic field and fields up to 8 T for H // c in these single crystals. In contrast to earlier…
Slave boson calculations have been carried out in the three-band tJ model for the high-T_c cuprates, with the inclusion of coupling to oxygen breathing mode phonons. Phonon-induced Van Hove nesting leads to a phase separation between a hole-doped domain and a (magnetic) domain near half filling, with long-range Coulomb forces limiting the separation to a nanoscopic scale. Strong correlation effects pin the Fermi level close to, but not precisely at the Van Hove singularity (VHS), which can enhance the tendency to phase separation. The resulting dispersions have been calculated, both in the uni…
We describe the spectral properties of underdoped cuprates as resulting from a momentum-dependent pseudogap in the normal state spectrum. Such a model accounts, within a BCS approach, for the doping dependence of the critical temperature and for the two-parameter leading-edge shift observed in the cuprates. By introducing a phenomenological temperature dependence of the pseudogap, which finds a natural interpretation within the stripe quantum-critical-point scenario for high-T_c superconductors, we reproduce also the T_c-T^* bifurcation near optimum doping. Finally, we briefly discuss the diff…
We predict a resonance impurity state generated by the substitution of one Cu atom with a nonmagnetic atom, such as Zn, in the pseudogap state of a high-T_c superconductor. The precise microscopic origin of the pseudogap is not important for this state to be formed, in particular this resonance will be present even in the absence of superconducting fluctuations in the normal state. In the presence of superconducting fluctuations, we predict the existence of a counterpart impurity peak on a symmetric bias. The nature of impurity resonance is similar to the previously studied resonance in the d-…
Charge stripe order has recently been established as an important ingredient of the physics of cuprate high-T$_c$ superconductors. However, due to the complex interplay between competing phases and the influence of disorder, it is unclear how it emerges from the parent metallic state. Here we report on the discovery of an unconventional electronic ordered phase between charge-stripe order and (pseudogapped) metal in the cuprate La$_{2-x-y}$Eu$_{y}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with $y = 0.2$ (LESCO). The peculiar properties of the intermediate phase are revealed through three complementary experiments: nuclea…
Precise neutron-scattering experiments on La$_{1.88-y}$Sr$_{0.12+y}$Cu$_{0.99}$R$_{0.01}$O$_4$ ($y$=0 for R=Cu, Zn and $y$=0.01 for R=Ga, Fe) were performed to examine the stability of stripe order in cuprate oxides through impurity substitution effects. For all the impurity-substituted samples a static charge-density-wave order similar to that reported in the low-temperature-tetragonal phase (LTT) was discovered in the low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) phase for the first time. Fe substitution significantly enhanced both the charge- and spin-density-wave orders. These results indicate that d…
We present a minimal model of a doped Mott insulator that simultaneously supports antiferromagnetic stripes and d-wave superconductivity. We explore the implications for the global phase diagram of the superconducting cuprates. At the unrestricted mean-field level, the various phases of the cuprates, including weak and strong pseudogap phases, and two different types of superconductivity in the underdoped and the overdoped regimes, find a natural interpretation. We argue that on the underdoped side, the superconductor is intrinsically inhomogeneous -- striped coexistence of of superconductivit…
Recent observations of broken symmetries have partly demystified the pseudogap phase. Here we review evidence for long-range intra-unit-cell(IUC) nematic order and its unexpectedly strong coupling to the phase of the fluctuating stripes in the pseudogap states of underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$. In particular, we focus on the analysis techniques that reveal this evidence in scanning tunneling spectroscopy data, the definition of the extracted IUC nematic order parameter, and a phenomenological theory of the coupling between the IUC nematic order and the previously reported coexisting …
We report an angle-resolved photoemission study of the charge stripe ordered La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ system. A comparative and quantitative line shape analysis is presented as the system evolves from the overdoped regime into the charge ordered phase. On the overdoped side ($x=0.20$), a normal state anti-nodal spectral gap opens upon cooling below ~ 80 K. In this process spectral weight is preserved but redistributed to larger energies. A correlation between this spectral gap and electron scattering is found. A different lineshape is observed in the antinodal region of charge order…
Within the Hubbard-Holstein model with long-range Coulomb forces, we revisit the charge-ordering scenario for the superconducting cuprates and account for the presence or the absence of a formed stripe phase in different classes of cuprates. We also evaluate the mean-field and the fluctuation-corrected critical lines for charge ordering and we relate them with the various pseudogap crossover lines occurring in the cuprates and we discuss a mechanism for their peculiar isotopic dependence. Considering the dynamical nature of the charge-ordering transition, we explain the spread of T* and of its…
A spin density-wave quantum critical point (QCP) is the central organizing principle of organic, iron-pnictide, heavy-fermion and electron-doped cuprate superconductors. It accounts for the superconducting Tc dome, the non-Fermi-liquid resistivity, and the Fermi-surface reconstruction. Outside the magnetically ordered phase above the QCP, scattering and pairing decrease in parallel as the system moves away from the QCP. Here we argue that a similar scenario, based on a stripe-order QCP, is a central organizing principle of hole-doped cuprate superconductors. Key properties of Eu-LSCO, Nd-LSCO …
Within the stripe quantum critical point theory for high T_c superconductors, we point out that there is a direct contribution of charge collective fluctuations to the optical absorption and to the Raman spectra. In this latter case, we find that the critical charge collective modes can or can not be excited depending on the direction of their wavevector and on the polarization of the incoming and outgoing photons. This indicates a marked distinction between quasiparticles which are strongly and weakly coupled to critical collective modes and provides a direct confirmation that the order assoc…
The Van Hove singularity (VHS) provides a paradigm for the study of the role of peaks in the density of states (dos) on electronic properties. More importantly, it appears to play a major role in the physics of the high-T_c superconductors, particularly since recent photoemission studies have found that the VHS is close to the Fermi level in most of the high-T_c cuprates near the composition of optimum T_c. This paper offers a comprehensive survey of the VHS model, describing both theoretical properties and experimental evidence for the picture. Special topics discussed include a survey of the…
We report $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of single-crystalline Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x$ = 0.023, 0.028, 0.033, and 0.059) annealed at 350~$^{\circ}$C for 7 days. From the observation of a characteristic shape of $^{75}$As NMR spectra in the stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, as in the case of $x$ = 0 ($T_{\rm N}$ = 170 K), clear evidence for the commensurate AFM phase transition with the concomitant structural phase transition is observed in $x$ = 0.023 ($T_{\rm N}$ = 106 K) and $x$ = 0.028 ($T_{\rm N}$ = 53 K). Through the temperature dependence of …
The role of the anti-bonding state in the electron correlations in Copper Oxide HTSC is analyzed. Then the t-J Hamiltonian is used to establish the formation of the charge stripes in underdoped oxides. It is proposed that these stripes make up the boundaries between the two degenerate anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) states, and that they are a key factor in switching between these states. We also provide a theoretical expression for the charge driven AFM magnons that have been observed by Neutron scattering experiments. Finally, the double correlation theory is applied to the stripe phase of holes to…
Strongly correlated electron systems host a variety of poorly understood correlations in their high temperature normal state. Unlike ordered phases defined by order parameters, these normal state phases are often defined through unconventional properties such as strange metallic transport or spectroscopic pseudogaps. Characterizing the microscopic correlations in the normal state is necessary to elucidate mechanisms that lead to these properties and their connection to ground state orders. Here we establish the presence of intertwined charge and spin stripes in the strange metal normal state o…
The effects of non-magnetic iso-valent defects inside the CuO2 plane(s) on superconducting transition temperature, Tc, dc charge transport, and the bulk magnetic susceptibility, \c{hi}(T), were investigated for the YBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-d (Zn-YBCO) and La2-xSrxCu1-yZnyO4 (Zn-LSCO) superconductors over a wide range of hole concentrations, p, and Zn contents (y) in the CuO2 plane(s). From the analysis of the \c{hi}(T, y) data, the pseudogap energy scale, εg, was found to be almost independent of the defect content at a given value of p. The Zn induced rate of suppression of Tc, dTc(p)/dy, was found …
$^{75}$As Nuclear Magnetic (NMR) and Quadrupolar (NQR) Resonance were used, together with Mössbauer spectroscopy, to investigate the magnetic state induced by Mn for Fe substitutions in F-doped LaFe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$AsO superconductors. The results show that $0.5$% of Mn doping is enough to suppress the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ from 27 K to zero and to recover the magnetic structure observed in the parent undoped LaFeAsO. Also the tetragonal to orthorhombic transition of the parent compound is recovered by introducing Mn, as evidenced by a sharp drop of the NQR frequency. The…
The oxygen isotope effect on the superconductivity, stripe phase and structure transition is systematically investigated in La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ with static stripe phase. Substitution of $^{16}$O by $^{18}$O leads to a decrease in superconducting transition temperature T$_C$, while enhances the temperature of the structural transition from low-temperature-orthorhombic (LTO) phase to low-temperature-tetragonal (LTT) phase. Compared to the Nd free sample, a larger isotope effect on $T_C$ is observed in La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$. These results indicate that the distor…
The nature of the pseudogap phase is a central problem in the quest to understand high-Tc cuprate superconductors. A fundamental question is what symmetries are broken when that phase sets in below a temperature T*. There is evidence from both polarized neutron diffraction and polar Kerr effect measurements that time- reversal symmetry is broken, but at temperatures that differ significantly. Broken rotational symmetry was detected by both resistivity and inelastic neutron scattering at low doping and by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy at low temperature, but with no clear connection to T*. H…
The thermopower S of the high-Tc superconductor La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4) was measured as a function of temperature T near its pseudogap critical point, the critical hole doping p* where the pseudogap temperature T* goes to zero. Just above p*, S/T varies as ln(1/T) over a decade of temperature. Below p*, S/T undergoes a large increase below T*. As with the temperature dependence of the resistivity, which is linear just above p* and undergoes a large upturn below T*, these are typical signatures of a quantum phase transition. This suggests that p* is a quantum critical point below which some…
We have investigated effects of Zn and Ni on the Cu-spin dynamics and superconductivity from the zero-field muon-spin-relaxation (ZF-muSR) and magnetic-susceptibility, chi, measurements for La_2-x_Sr_x_Cu_1-y_(Zn,Ni)_y_O_4_ with x=0.15-0.20, changing y up to 0.10 in fine step. In the optimally doped x=0.15, it has been concluded that the formation of a magnetic order requires a larger amount of Ni than that of Zn, which is similar to our previous results of x=0.13. From the estimation of volume fractions of superconducting (SC) and magnetic regions, it has been found for x=0.15 that the SC reg…
We report electronic Raman scattering measurements on optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7 where Zn or Ni impurities have been substituted by Cu. Using Raman selection rules, we have probed the superconducting gap in the nodal and antinodal regions. We show that under impurity substitutions, the energy of the antinodal peak detected in the superconducting state is not related to the critical temperature Tc and that signatures of superconductivity disappear in the nodal regions. Our experimental findings advocate in favor of gapless arcs around the nodes. The breakdown of the relationship between the anti…
We report experimental studies of a series of BaFe$_2$S$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ ($0\leq x\leq3$) single crystals and powder specimens using x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation, and electrical transport measurements. A structural transformation from Cmcm (BaFe$_2$S$_3$) to Pnma (BaFe$_2$Se$_3$) was identified around $x = 0.7\sim 1$. Neutron diffraction measurements on the samples with $x$ = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.7 reveal that the N$é$el temperature of the stripe antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed from $\sim$120 to 85 K, while the magnitude of the ordered Fe$^{2+}$ moments …
25 years after discovery of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) in La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ (LBCO), the HTSC continues to pose some of the biggest challenges in materials science. Cuprates are fundamentally different from conventional superconductors in that the metallic conductivity and superconductivity are induced by doping carriers into an antiferromagnetically ordered correlated insulator. In such systems, the normal state is expected to be quite different from a Landau-Fermi liquid - the basis for the conventional BCS theory of superconductivity. The situation is additionally compli…
The effects of planar hole content, p (= x), on the static magnetic susceptibility, chi(T), of polycrystalline La2-xSrxCu1-yZnyO4 compounds were investigated over a wide range of Sr (x) and Zn (y) contents. The magnetic behavior caused by Zn was found to depend strongly on the hole content. The apparent magnetic moment induced by Zn was larger in underdoped La2-xSrxCu1-yZnyO4, decreased quite sharply around p ~ 0.19, and did not change much for further overdoping. This is interpreted in terms of the effect of the pseudogap on the Zn-induced magnetic behavior, as there is growing evidence that …
The smooth evolution of the tunneling gap of Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8 with doping from a pseudogap state in the underdoped cuprates to a superconducting state at optimal and overdoping reflects an underlying SO(6) instability structure of the (pi,0) saddle points. The pseudogap is probably not associated with superconductivity, but is related to competing nesting instabilities, which are responsible for the stripe phases. We earlier introduced a simple Ansatz of this competition in terms of a pinned Balseiro-Falicov (pBF) model of competing charge density wave and (s-wave) superconductivity. This mod…
We report $^{63,65}$Cu NQR measurements on slightly underdoped NdBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+y}$ single crystals heavily doped by Ni and Zn impurities. Owing to the impurity doping superconductivity is fully suppressed in both cases. The Ni strongly enhances magnetic correlations and induces a wipeout of the NQR signal comparable to that found in stripe ordered lanthanum cuprates. In contrast, the magnetism is suppressed in the Zn doped sample where no wipeout effect is observed and the nuclear spin relaxation rate is reduced. Our findings are in a striking correspondence with the different impact o…
Starting from a microscopic itinerant model, we derive and analyze the effective low-energy model for collective magnetic excitations in the iron pnictides. We show that the stripe magnetic order is generally preempted by an Ising-nematic order which breaks $C_{4}$ lattice symmetry but preserves O(3) spin-rotational symmetry. This leads to a rich phase diagram as function of doping, pressure, and elastic moduli, displaying split magnetic and nematic tri-critical points. The nematic transition may instantly bring the system to the verge of a magnetic transition, or it may occur first, being fol…
Impurity substitution of Zn in La-214 and (Y,Ca)-123 high-T_c superconductors suppresses T_c but does not affect appreciably the onset of the pseudogap phase in the underdoped region nor optimal doping or the position of the inferred quantum critical point. Based on a 1/N expansion of the t-J model we explain these findings as well as the similar dependence on a magnetic field in terms of a quantum critical point scenario where a flux phase causes the pseudogap.
We have identified the unscreened Froehlich electron-phonon interaction (EPI) as the most essential for pairing in cuprate superconductors as now confirmed by isotope substitution, recent angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES), and some other experiments. Low-energy physics is that of mobile lattice polarons and bipolarons in the strong EPI regime. Many experimental observations have been predicted or explained in the framework of our "Coulomb-Froehlich" model, which fully takes into account the long-range Coulomb repulsion and the Froehlich EPI. They include pseudo-gaps, unusual isotope effects…
The hypothesis that holes doped into high-Tc cuprate superconductors organize themselves in two-dimensional (2D) array of diagonal stripes is discussed, and, on the basis of this hypothesis, a new microscopic model of superconductivity is proposed and solved. The model describes two kinds of hole states localized either inside the stripes or in the antiferromagnetic domains between the stripes. The characteristic energy difference between these two kinds of states is identified with the pseudogap. The superconducting (SC) order parameter predicted by the model has two components, whose phases …
The most intriguing observation of cuprate experiments is most likely the metal-insulator-crossover (MIC), seen in the underdome region of the temperature-doping phase diagram of copper-oxides under a strong magnetic field, when the superconductivity is suppressed. This MIC, which results in such phenomena as heat conductivity downturn, anomalous Lorentz ratio, nonlinear entropy, insulating ground state, nematicity- and stripe-phases and Fermi pockets, reveals the nonconventional dielectric property of the pseudogap-normal phase. Since conventional superconductivity appears from a conducting n…
The influence of a partial substitution with sulphur into Te sites on the crystal, electronic and magnetic structures of FeTe is investigated by DFT calculations. The results reveal a phase transition from the antiferromagnetic double-stripe order for pure FeTe to the single-stripe order for S-substituted samples, which coincides with the previously observed appearance of the superconducting state. The magnetic transition is caused by the variations of the average chalcogen position in the unit cell. The analyzed normal-state properties of Fe(Te,S) and Fe(Se;S) compounds allow a detection of t…
The recent observation of quantum oscillations in underdoped high-Tc superconductors, combined with their negative Hall coefficient at low temperature, reveals that the Fermi surface of hole-doped cuprates includes a small electron pocket. This strongly suggests that the large hole Fermi surface characteristic of the overdoped regime undergoes a reconstruction caused by the onset of some order which breaks translational symmetry. Here we consider the possibility that this order is "stripe" order, a form of charge / spin modulation observed most clearly in materials like Eu-doped and Nd-doped L…
Using numerical techniques we study the spectral function $A(k,ω)$ of a spin-fermion model for cuprates in the regime where magnetic and charge domains (stripes) are developed upon hole-doping. From $A(k,ω)$ we study the electronic dynamics and determine the Fermi Surface (FS), which is compared with angular resolved photoemission results for $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_2$. A pseudogap is observed in the density of states at the chemical potential for all finite dopings. The striped ground state appears to be metallic in this model since there is finite spectral weight at the chemical potential, but the …
In the present paper II, we will gain an understanding of the nematicity, insulating ground state (IGS), nematicity to stripe phase transition, Fermi pockets evolution, and resistivity temperature upturn, as to be metal - insulator (fermion-boson)- crossover (MIC) phenomena for the pseudogap (PG) region of cuprates. While in the paper I [1], we obtained an understanding of the observed heat conductivity downturn, anomalous Lorentz ratio, insulator resistivity boundary, nonlinear entropy as manifestations of the same MIC. The recently observed nematicity and hidden magnetic order are related to…
