The coordinate transformation method is applied to bounded domains to design metamaterial devices for steering spatially confined electromagnetic fields. Both waveguide and free-space beam applications are considered as these are analogous within the present approach. In particular, we describe devices that bend the propagation direction and squeeze confined electromagnetic fields. Two approaches in non-magnetic realization of these structures are examined. The first is based on using a reduced set of material parameters, and the second on finding non-magnetic transformation media. It is shown that transverse-magnetic fields can be bent or squeezed to an arbitrary extent and without reflection using only dielectric structures.
Perfectly transparent metamaterial structures of arbitrary shapes, constructed from coordinate stretching and contractions, are presented. Coordinate stretching has been used for 2 decades in perfectly matched layers (PMLs) to electromagnetically simulate infinite domains in numerical techniques, but this concept is applied here for the first time to realize a physical transmission medium. The transparent medium does not scatter electromagnetic waves, i.e. it is reflection-less for all incidence angles and all excitation frequencies. It may be implemented in the form of metasurfaces and will c…
We propose a design for an universal absorber, characterized by a resonance frequency that can be tuned from visible to microwave frequencies independently of the choice of the metal and the dielectrics involved. An almost resonant perfect absorption up to 99.8 % is demonstrated at resonance for all polarization states of light and for a very wide angular aperture. These properties originate from a magnetic Fabry-Perot mode that is confined in a dielectric spacer of $λ/100$ thickness by a metamaterial layer and a mirror. An extraordinary large funneling through nano-slits explains how light ca…
Recently it was proposed that extraordinary light waves in hyperbolic metamaterials exhibit two times physics behavior (Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 067402, 2010). We report experimental observation of this effect via investigation of gravity-like nonlinear optics of iron/cobalt-based ferrofluid hyperbolic metamaterials. In addition to conventional temporal coordinate, the spatial coordinate oriented along the optical axis of the metamaterial also exhibits timelike character, which leads to very unusual two times physics behavior in these systems.
We propose a simple singularity-free coordinate transformation that could be implemented in Maxwell's equations in order to simulate one aspect of a Kerr black hole. Kerr black holes are known to force light to rotate in a predetermined direction inside the ergoregion. By making use of cosmological analogies and the theoretical framework of transformation optics, we have designed a metamaterial that can make light behave as if it is propagating around a rotating cosmological massive body. We present numerical simulations involving incident Gaussian beams interacting with the materials to verif…
In the present paper we have discussed in detail electromagnetically induced transparency and signal storing in the case of one signal pulses propagating in a classical electric medium resembling this of four-level atoms in the tripod configuration. Our theoretical results confirm recently observed dependence of transparency windows position on coupling parameters. In the process of storing the pulse energy is confined inside the metamaterial as electric charge oscillations and after required time it is possible to switch the control fields on again and to release the trapped signal. By manipu…
Recent advances in hyperbolic metamaterials have spurred many breakthroughs in the field of manipulating light propagation. However, the unusual electromagnetic properties also put extremely high demands on its compositional materials. Limited by the finite relative permittivity of the natural materials, the effective permittivity of the constructed hyperbolic metamaterials is also confined to a narrow range. Here, based on the proposed concept of structure-induced spoof surface plasmon, we prove that arbitrary materials can be selected to construct the hyperbolic metamaterials with independen…
Complete bases that are useful for beam propagation problems and that present the distinct property of being spatially confined at the initial plane are proposed. These bases are constructed in terms of polynomials of Gaussians, in contrast with standard alternatives such as the Hermite-Gaussian basis that are given by a Gaussian times a polynomial. The property of spatial confinement implies that, for all basis elements, the spatial extent at the initial plane is roughly the same. This property leads to an optimal scaling parameter that is independent of truncation order for the fitting of a …
We examine the optical properties of two different configurations of a cylindrical device made from a hyperbolic metamaterial with optical axis defined by circular and radial director fields. The hyperbolic metamaterial is an uniaxial anisotropic medium for which the ratio between ordinary and extraordinary permittivities is negative, leading to a particular effective geometry with two timelike coordinates in the metric (Kleinian signature). By using differential geometry tools we are able to perform a comparison between a simple geometrical optics treatment and the wave formalism that shows t…
Quantum Thermodynamic Transformation Optics: A Unified Framework for Energy and Entropy with Application to the Casimir Force in Dissipative Metamaterials
We propose to use molecular picocavity ensembles as macroscopic coherent nonlinear optical devices enabled by nanoscale strong coupling. For a generic picocavity model that includes molecular and photonic disorder, we derive theoretical performance bounds for coherent cross-phase modulation signals using weak classical fields of different frequencies. We show that strong coupling of the picocavity {\it vacua} with a specific vibronic sideband in the molecular emission spectrum results in a significant variation of the effective refractive index of the metamaterial relative to a molecule-free s…
To efficiently integrate cutting-edge terahertz technology into compact devices, the highly confined terahertz plasmons are attracting intensive attentions. Compared to plasmons at visible frequencies in metals, terahertz plasmons, typically in lightly doped semiconductors or graphene, are sensitive to carrier density (n) and thus have an easy tunability, which, however, leads to unstable or imprecise terahertz spectra. By deriving a simplified but universal form of plasmon frequencies, here we reveal a unified mechanism for generating unusual n-independent plasmons (DIPs) in all topological s…
Coordinate transformations are a versatile tool to mould the flow of light, enabling a host of astonishing phenomena such as optical cloaking with metamaterials. Moving away from the usual restriction that links isotropic materials with conformal transformations, we show how non-conformal distortions of optical space are intimately connected to the complex refractive index distribution of an isotropic non-Hermitian medium. Remarkably, this insight can be used to circumvent the material requirement of working with refractive indices below unity, which limits the applications of transformation o…
Herein, we investigate the symmetry-protected toroidal dipole resonances and conditions of their excitation in a new type of electromagnetic metamaterials. These metamaterials are all-dielectric planar periodic arrays of dielectric disks disposed on a dielectric substrate. The elementary building blocks of the array are trimers which are distributed in hexagonal unit supercells. The highest geometrical symmetry of the unit supercell is C6v. The analysis is fulfilled by using the representation theory of groups with the application of the magnetic group theory, which is a new approach in solvin…
Optical imaging beyond the diffraction limit was one of the primary motivations for negative-index metamaterials, resulting in Pendry's perfect lens and the more attainable superlens. While these approaches offer sub-diffractional resolution, they do not provide a mechanism for magnification of the image. Hyperbolic (or indefinite-permittivity) metamaterials have been theoretically considered and experimentally demonstrated to provide simultaneously subdiffractive imaging and magnification; however, they are plagued with low efficiency and complex fabrication. In this work, we present theoreti…
