Maxwell's equations in curved space-time are invariant under electromagnetic duality transformations. We exploit this property to constraint the design parameters of metamaterials used for transformations optics. We show that a general transformation must be implemented using a dual-symmetric metamaterial. This can be accomplished constraining the polarisability tensors of their individual constituents, i.e. the meta atoms. We obtain explicit expressions for these constraints. We also show that the spatial part of the coordinate transformation depends only on the electric-electric tensorial coupling of the polarisability tensor, while the spatio-temporal part depends only on the electric-magnetic tensorial coupling. In our derivations, we find that two dipoles located at the same point, one electric (p) and one magnetic (m), are needed to produce a total field with well defined helicity equal to +1 or -1, and that they must be related as p=im/c or p=-im/c, respectively.
We present theoretical formulation and experimental demonstration of a novel technique for the fast compression-less terahertz imaging based on the broadband Fourier optics. The technique exploits k-vector/frequency duality in Fourier optics which allows using a single-pixel detector to perform angular scan along a circular path, while the broadband spectrum is used to scan along the radial dimension in Fourier domain. The proposed compression-less image reconstruction technique (hybrid inverse transform) requires only a small number of measurements that scales linearly with the image linear s…

We develop a theory for waveguides that respects the duality of electromagnetism, namely the symmetry of the equations arising through inclusion of magnetic monopoles in addition to including electrons (electric monopoles). The term magnetoelectric potential is sometimes used to signify the magnetic-monopole induced dual to the usual electromagnetic potential. To this end, we introduce a general theory for describing modes and characteristics of waveguides based on mixed-monopole materials, with both electric and magnetic responses. Our theory accommodates exotic media such as double-negative,…
Electric magnetic duality symmetry is well understood in vacuum. For light propagating through a medium this symmetry is typically broken. We investigate under what conditions duality transformation is preserved in a linear medium and employ these conditions to generalise the definition of optical helicity to a general linear medium. We will discuss some unique properties duality symmetric media possess, provided they exist and reformulate Maxwell's equation in such a way that they explicitly show the decoupling of opposite helicities. The feasibility of constructing a duality symmetric medium…
We revisit the total scatterings (in terms of extinction, scattering and absorption cross sections) by arbitrary clusters of nonmagnetic particles that support optically-induced magnetic responses. Our reexamination is conducted from the perspective of the electromagnetic duality symmetry, and it is revealed that all total scattering properties are invariant under duality transformations. This secures that for self-dual particle clusters, the total scattering properties are polarization independent for any fixed incident direction; while for non-self-dual particle clusters, two scattering conf…
Ultrathin flat meta-optics have shown great promise for holography in recent years. However, most of the reported meta-optical holograms rely on only phase modulation and neglect the amplitude information. Modulation of both amplitude and phase in meta-optics either requires polarization sensitive meta-atoms, or complex scatterers with stringent fabrication requirements. Additionally, almost all the meta-optical holograms were measured under laser illumination. Here we adopt the concept of double-phase holography, to report polarization-independent holography with both amplitude and phase modu…
Interference of electromagnetic modes supported by subwavelength photonic structures is one of the key concepts that underpins the subwavelength control of light in meta-optics. It drives the whole realm of all-dielectric Mie-resonant nanophotonics with many applications for low-loss nanoscale optical antennas, metasurfaces, and metadevices. Specifically, interference of the electric and toroidal dipole moments results in a very peculiar, low-radiating optical state associated with the concept of optical anapole. Here, we uncover the physics of multimode interferences and multipolar interplay …
We report an inverse-designed, high numerical aperture (~0.44), extended depth of focus (EDOF) meta-optic, which exhibit a lens-like point spread function (PSF). The EDOF meta-optic maintains a focusing efficiency comparable to that of a hyperboloid metalens throughout its depth of focus. Exploiting the extended depth of focus and computational post-processing, we demonstrate broadband imaging across the full visible spectrum using a 1 mm, f/1 meta-optic. Unlike other canonical EDOF meta-optics, characterized by phase masks such as a log-asphere or cubic function, our design exhibits a highly …
Optical control over elementary molecular vibration establishes fundamental capabilities for exploiting the broad range of optical linear and nonlinear phenomena. However, experimental demonstration of the coherently driven molecular vibration remains a challenge task due to the weak optical force imposed on natural materials. Here we report the design of "meta-atom" that exhibits giant artificial optical nonlinearity. These "meta-atoms" support co-localized magnetic resonance at optical frequency and vibration resonance at GHz frequency with a deep-sub-diffraction-limit spatial confinement ($…
Recently, coherent control of the optical response of thin films of matter in standing waves has attracted considerable attention, ranging from applications in excitation-selective spectroscopy and nonlinear optics to demonstrations of all-optical image processing. Here we show that integration of metamaterial and optical fibre technologies allows the use of coherently controlled absorption in a fully fiberized and packaged switching metadevice. With this metadevice, that controls light with light in a nanoscale plasmonic metamaterial film on an optical fibre tip, we provide proof-of-principle…
Metasurfaces, composed of subwavelength scattering elements, have demonstrated remarkable control over the transmitted amplitude, phase, and polarization of light. However, manipulating the amplitude upon transmission has required loss if a single metasurface is used. Here, we describe high-efficiency independent manipulation of the amplitude and phase of a beam using two lossless phase-only metasurfaces separated by a distance. With this configuration, we experimentally demonstrate optical components such as combined beam-forming and splitting devices, as well as those for forming complex-val…
All-optical switching based on optical nonlinearity must undergo complex processes of light-mater interaction in atom and electron scale, so a relative high power and long response time is required, that construct main bottlenecks in all-optical technology. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism for building all-optical switching based on a change resonance modes of meta-atoms in metamaterials, not involved optical nonlinearity of materials. A metamaterial composed of cubic dielectric meta-atoms periodically embedded in a background matrix is designed and constructed. All-optical switch fun…

Recently, the study of halide perovskites has attracted an enormous attention due to their exceptional optical and electrical properties. As a result, this family of materials can provide a prospective platform for mo…
Miniature varifocal lenses are crucial for many applications requiring compact optical systems. Here, utilizing electro-mechanically actuated 0.5-mm aperture infrared Alvarez meta-optics, we demonstrate 3.1 mm (200 diopters) focal length tuning with an actuation voltage below 40 V. This constitutes the largest focal length tuning in any low-power electro-mechanically actuated meta-optic, enabled by the high energy density in comb-drive actuators producing large displacements at relatively low voltage. The demonstrated device is produced by a novel nanofabrication process that accommodates meta…
Rapidly growing demands for high-performance computing, powerful data processing systems, and big data necessitate the advent of novel optical devices to perform demanding computing processes effectively. Due to its unprecedented growth in the past two decades, the field of meta-optics offers a viable solution for spatially, spectrally, and/or even temporally sculpting amplitude, phase, polarization, and/or dispersion of optical wavefronts. In this Review, we discuss state-of-the-art developments as well as emerging trends in computational meta-structures as disruptive platforms for spatial op…
Sub-wavelength diffractive optics meta-optics present a multi-scale optical system, where the behavior of constituent sub-wavelength scatterers, or meta-atoms, need to be modelled by full-wave electromagnetic simulations, whereas the whole meta-optical system can be modelled using ray/ wave optics. Current simulation techniques for large-scale meta-optics rely on the local phase approximation (LPA), where the coupling between dissimilar meta-atoms are completely neglected. Here we introduce a physics-informed neural network, which can efficiently model the meta-optics while still incorporating…
Flat optics foresees a new era of ultra-compact optical devices, where metasurfaces serve as the foundation. Conventional designs of metasurfaces start with a certain structure as the prototype, followed by an extensive parametric sweep to accommodate the requirements of phase and amplitude of the emerging light. Regardless of how computation-consuming the process is, a predefined structure can hardly realize the independent control over the polarization, frequency, and spatial channels, which hinders the potential of metasurfaces to be multifunctional. Besides, achieving complicated and multi…
