We consider random walks (RWs) and self-avoiding walks (SAWs) on disordered lattices directly at the percolation threshold. Applying numerical simulations, we study the scaling behavior of the models on the incipient percolation cluster in space dimensions d=2, 3, 4. Our analysis yields estimates of universal exponents, governing the scaling laws for configurational properties of RWs and SAWs.
The scaling behavior of linear polymers in disordered media, modelled by self-avoiding walks (SAWs) on the backbone of percolation clusters in two, three and four dimensions is studied by numerical simulations. We apply the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth chain-growth method (PERM). Our numerical results yield estimates of critical exponents, governing the scaling laws of disorder averages of the configurational properties of SAWs, and clearly indicate a multifractal spectrum which emerges when two fractals meet each other.
The properties of the similarity transformation in percolation theory in the complex plane of the percolation probability are studied. It is shown that the percolation problem on a two-dimensional square lattice reduces to the Mandelbrot transformation, leading to a fractal behavior of the percolation probability in the complex plane. The hierarchical chains of impedances, reducing to a nonlinear mapping of the impedance space onto itself, are studied. An infinite continuation of the procedure leads to a fixed point. It is shown that the number of steps required to reach a neighborhood of this…
Classically, percolation critical exponents are linked to the power laws that characterize percolation cluster fractal properties. It is found here that the gradient percolation power laws are conserved even for extreme gradient values for which the frontier of the infinite cluster is no more fractal. In particular the exponent 7/4 which was recently demonstrated to be the exact value for the dimension of the so-called "hull" or external perimeter of the incipient percolation cluster keeps its value in describing the width and length of gradient percolation frontiers whatever the gradient valu…
We consider the effects of spatial correlations in a two-dimensional site percolation model. By generalizing the Newman-Ziff Monte Carlo algorithm to include spatial correlations, percolation thresholds and fractal dimensions of percolation clusters are obtained. For a wide range of spatial correlations, the percolation threshold differs little from the uncorrelated result. In contrast, the fractal dimension differs sharply from the uncorrelated result for almost all types of correlation studied. We interpret these results in the framework of long-range correlated percolation.

Perpendicular magnetic anisotropy ferromagnetic/ superconducting (FM/SC) bilayers with a labyrinth domain structure are used to study nucleation of superconductivity on a fractal network, tunable through magnetic history. As clusters of reversed domains appear in the FM layer, the SC film shows a percolative behavior that depends on two independent processes: the arrangement of initial reversed domains and the fractal geometry of expanding clusters. For a full labyrinth structure, the behavior of the upper critical field is typical of confined superconductivity on a fractal network.
Using Monte Carlo simulations we study the distributions of the 3-block mass $N_3$ in 4d, 5d, and 6d percolation systems. Because the probability of creating large 3-blocks in these dimensions is very small, we use a ``go with the winners'' method of statistical enhancement to simulate configurations having probability as small as $10^{-30}$. In earlier work, the fractal dimensions of 3-blocks, $d_3$, in 2d and 3d were found to be $1.20\pm 0.1$ and $1.15\pm 0.1$, respectively, consistent with the possibility that the fractal dimension might be the same in all dimensions. We find that the fract…
We study the adsorption of flexible polymer macromolecules on a percolation cluster, formed by a regular two-dimensional disordered lattice at critical concentration p_c of attractive sites. The percolation cluster is characterized by a fractal dimension d_s^{p_c}=91/49. The conformational properties of polymer chains grafted to such a fractal substrate are studied by means of the pruned-enriched Rosenbluth method (PERM). We find estimates for the surface crossover exponent governing the scaling of the adsorption energy in the vicinity of the transition point, ϕ_s^{p_c}=0.425\pm0.009, and for …
We study long-range power-law correlated disorder on square and cubic lattices. In particular, we present high-precision results for the percolation thresholds and the fractal dimension of the largest clusters as function of the correlation strength. The correlations are generated using a discrete version of the Fourier filtering method. We consider two different metrics to set the length scales over which the correlations decay, showing that the percolation thresholds are highly sensitive to such system details. By contrast, we verify that the fractal dimension $d_{\rm f}$ is a universal quan…
We propose a novel finite size scaling analysis for percolation transition observed in complex networks. While it is known that cooperative systems in growing networks often undergo an infinite order transition with inverted Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless singularity, it is very hard for numerical simulations to determine the transition point precisely. Since the neighbor of the ordered phase is not a simple disordered phase but a critical phase, conventional finite size scaling technique does not work. In our finite size scaling, the forms of the scaling functions for the order parameter and…
A granular system slightly below the percolation threshold is a collection of finite metallic clusters, characterized by wide spectrum of sizes, resistances, and charging energies. Electrons hop from cluster to clusters via short insulating "links" of high resistance. At low temperatures all clusters are Coulomb blockaded and the dc-conductivity is exponentially suppressed. At lowest T the leading transport mechanism is variable range cotunneling via largest (critical) clusters, leading to the modified Efros-Shklovsky law. At intermediate temperatures the principal suppression of the conductiv…
An oscillatory magnetic field dependence of the DC voltage is observed when a low-frequency current flows through superconducting Sn-Ge thin-film composites near the percolation threshold. The paper also studies the experimental realisations of temporal voltage fluctuations in these films. Both the structure of the voltage oscillations against the magnetic field and the time series of the electric "noise" possess a fractal pattern. With the help of the fractal analysis procedure, the fluctuations observed have been shown to be neither a noise with a large number of degrees of freedom, nor the …
We suggest treating a conducting network of oriented polymer chains as an anisotropic fractal whose dimensionality D=1+εis close to one. Percolation on such a fractal is studied within the real space renormalization group of Migdal and Kadanoff. We find that the threshold value and all the critical exponents are strongly nonanalytic functions of εas εtends to zero, e.g., the critical exponent of conductivity is ε^{-2}\exp (-1-1/ε). The distribution function for conductivity of finite samples at the percolation threshold is established. It is shown that the central body of the distribution is g…
Simplicial complexes are gaining increasing scientific attention as they are generalized network structures that can represent the many-body interactions existing in complex systems raging from the brain to high-order social networks. Simplicial complexes are formed by simplicies, such as nodes, links, triangles and so on. Cell complexes further extend these generalized network structures as they are formed by regular polytopes such as squares, pentagons etc. Pseudo-fractal simplicial and cell complexes are a major example of generalized network structures and they can be obtained by gluing $2…
The fractal dimension of minimal spanning trees on percolation clusters is estimated for dimensions $d$ up to $d=5$. A robust analysis technique is developed for correlated data, as seen in such trees. This should be a robust method suitable for analyzing a wide array of randomly generated fractal structures. The trees analyzed using these techniques are built using a combination of Prim's and Kruskal's algorithms for finding minimal spanning trees. This combination reduces memory usage and allows for simulation of larger systems than would otherwise be possible. The path length fractal dimens…
Stretched exponential relaxation ($\exp{-(t/τ)}^{β_K}$) is observed in a large variety of systems but has not been explained so far. Studying random walks on percolation clusters in curved spaces whose dimensions range from 2 to 7, we show that the relaxation is accurately a stretched exponential and is directly connected to the fractal nature of these clusters. Thus we find that in each dimension the decay exponent $β_K$ is related to well-known exponents of the percolation theory in the corresponding flat space. We suggest that the stretched exponential behavior observed in many complex syst…
In the previous article (S. Matsutani and Y. Shimosako and Y. Wang, Physica A \bf{391} (2012) 5802-5809) we numerically investigated an electric potential problem with high contrast local conductivities ($γ_0$ and $γ_1$, $0<γ_0 \ll γ_1$) for a two-dimensional continuum percolation model (CPM). As numerical results, we showed there that the equipotential curves exhibit the fractal structure around the threshold $p_c$ and gave an approximated curve representing a relation between the homogenized conductivity and the volume fraction $p$ over $[p_c,1]$. In this article, using the duality of the co…
The average number $S_N(t)$ of distinct sites visited up to time t by N noninteracting random walkers all starting from the same origin in a disordered fractal is considered. This quantity $S_N(t)$ is the result of a double average: an average over random walks on a given lattice followed by an average over different realizations of the lattice. We show for two-dimensional percolation clusters at criticality (and conjecture for other stochastic fractals) that the distribution of the survival probability over these realizations is very broad in Euclidean space but very narrow in the chemical or…
We argue that the elastic backbone (EB) (union of shortest paths) on a cylindrical system, recently studied by Sampaio Filho et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 175701 (2018)], is in fact the backbone of two-dimensional directed percolation (DP). We simulate the EB on the same system as considered by these authors, and also study the DP backbone directly using an algorithm that allows backbones to be generated in a completely periodic manner. We find that both the EB in the bulk and the DP backbone have a fractal dimension of $d_{b} = d_{B,\rm DP} = 1.681\,02(15)$ at the identical critical point $p_…
Critical properties of hulls of directed spiral percolation (DSP) clusters are studied on the square and triangular lattices in two dimensions (2D). The hull fractal dimension ($d_H$) and some of the critical exponents associated with different moments of the hull size distribution function of the anisotropic DSP clusters are reported here. The values of $d_H$ and other critical exponents are found the same within error bars on both the lattices. The universality of the hull's critical exponents then holds true between the square and triangular lattices in 2D unlike the cluster's critical expo…
We investigate bond percolation on the non-planar Hanoi network (HN-NP), which was studied in [Boettcher et al. Phys. Rev. E 80 (2009) 041115]. We calculate the fractal exponent of a subgraph of the HN-NP, which gives a lower bound for the fractal exponent of the original graph. This lower bound leads to the conclusion that the original system does not have a non-percolating phase, where only finite size clusters exist, for p>0, or equivalently, that the system exhibits either the critical phase, where infinitely many infinite clusters exist, or the percolating phase, where a unique giant comp…
We study bond percolation on a one-parameter family of hierarchical small-world network, and find a meta-transition between the inverted BKT transition and the abrupt transition driven by changing the network topology. It is found that the order parameter is continuous and fractal exponent is discontinuous in the inverted BKT transition, and oppositely, the former is discontinuous and the latter is continuous in the abrupt transition. The gaps of the order parameter and fractal exponent in each transition go to vanish as approaching the meta-transition point. This point corresponds to a margin…
This article is a mini-review about electrical current flows in networks from the perspective of statistical physics. We briefly discuss analytical methods to solve the conductance of an arbitrary resistor network. We then turn to basic results related to percolation: namely, the conduction properties of a large random resistor network as the fraction of resistors is varied. We focus on how the conductance of such a network vanishes as the percolation threshold is approached from above. We also discuss the more microscopic current distribution within each resistor of a large network. At the pe…
We investigate the process of invasion percolation between two sites (injection and extraction sites) separated by a distance r in two-dimensional lattices of size L. Our results for the non-trapping invasion percolation model indicate that the statistics of the mass of invaded clusters is significantly dependent on the local occupation probability (pressure) Pe at the extraction site. For Pe=0, we show that the mass distribution of invaded clusters P(M) follows a power-law P(M) ~ M^{-α} for intermediate values of the mass M, with an exponent α=1.39. When the local pressure is set to Pe=Pc, wh…
The effect of geometry and morphology of superconducting structure on magnetic flux trapping is considered. It is found that the clusters of normal phase, which act as pinning centers, have significant fractal properties. The fractal dimension of the boundary of these clusters is estimated using a simple area-perimeter relation. A superconductor is treated as a percolation system. It is revealed that the fractality intensifies the magnetic flux trapping and thereby enhances the critical current value.
The two-dimensional antiferromagnetic S=1/2 Heisenberg model with random bond dilution is studied using quantum Monte Carlo simulation at the percolation threshold (50% of the bonds removed). Finite-size scaling of the staggered structure factor averaged over the largest connected clusters of sites on L*L lattices shows that long-range order exists within the percolating fractal clusters in the thermodynamic limit. This implies that the order-disorder transition driven by bond-dilution occurs exactly at the percolation threshold and that the exponents are classical. This result should apply al…
The number of two-dimensional percolation clusters whose external hulls enclose an area greater than A, in a system of area Omega, behaves at the critical point as C Ω/A for large A, where C = 1/(8 pi sqrt(3)). Here we show that away from the critical point this factor is multiplied by a scaling function that is asymptotically proportional to a simple exponential exp(-A/A*) where A* scales as |p - pc|^(-2 nu). The fit is better than for Kunz and Souillard sub-critical scaling, which would predict the asymptotic behavior exp(-(A/A*)^(2/D) where D = 91/48 is the fractal dimension.
We study the transport properties of directed percolation clusters at the upper critical dimension $d_{c} = 4+1$, where critical fluctuations induce logarithmic corrections to the leading (mean-field) scaling behavior. Employing field theory and renormalization group methods we calculate these logarithmic corrections up to and including the next to leading correction for a variety of observables, viz. the connectivity, i.e., the probability that two given points are connected, the average two-point resistance and some of the fractal masses describing percolation clusters. Furthermore, we study…
We present high statistics simulations for 2-d percolation clusters in the "bus bar" geometry at the critical point, for site and for bond percolation. We measured their backbone sizes and electrical conductivities. For all sets of measurements we find large corrections to scaling, most of which do not seem to be described by single powers. Using single power terms for the corrections to scaling of the backbone masses, we would obtain fractal dimensions which are different for site and bond percolation, while the correct result is $D_b = 1.6432(8)$ for both. For the conductivity, the correctio…
We introduce the notion of topological electronic states on random lattices in non-integer dimensions. By considering a class $D$ model on critical percolation clusters embedded in two dimensions, we demonstrate that these topological random fractals exhibit a robust mobility gap, support quantized conductance and represent a well-defined thermodynamic phase of matter. The finite-size scaling analysis further suggests that the critical properties are not consistent with the class $D$ systems in two dimensions. Our results establish topological random fractals as the most complex systems known …
On two-dimensional percolation clusters at the percolation threshold, we study $<σ(M_B,r)>$, the average conductance of the backbone, defined by two points separated by Euclidean distance $r$, of mass $M_B$. We find that with increasing $M_B$ and for fixed r, $<σ(M_B,r)>$ asymptotically {\it decreases} to a constant, in contrast with the behavior of homogeneous sytems and non-random fractals (such as the Sierpinski gasket) in which conductance increases with increasing $M_B$. We explain this behavior by studying the distribution of shortest paths between the two points on clusters with a given…
The distribution of masses of clusters smaller than the infinite cluster is evaluated at the percolation threshold. The clusters are ranked according to their masses and the distribution $P(M/L^D,r)$ of the scaled masses M for any rank r shows a universal behaviour for different lattice sizes L (D is the fractal dimension). For different ranks however, there is a universal distribution function only in the large rank limit, i.e., $P(M/L^D,r)r^{-yζ} \sim g(Mr^y/L^D)$ (y and $ζ$ are defined in the text), where the universal scaling function g is found to be Gaussian in nature.
The ground state structure of the two-dimensional random field Ising magnet is studied using exact numerical calculations. First we show that the ferromagnetism, which exists for small system sizes, vanishes with a large excitation at a random field strength dependent length scale. This {\it break-up length scale} $L_b$ scales exponentially with the squared random field, $\exp(A/Δ^2)$. By adding an external field $H$ we then study the susceptibility in the ground state. If $L>L_b$, domains melt continuously and the magnetization has a smooth behavior, independent of system size, and the suscep…
Self-similarity is a property of fractal structures, a concept introduced by Mandelbrot and one of the fundamental mathematical results of the 20th century. The importance of fractal geometry stems from the fact that these structures were recognized in numerous examples in Nature, from the coexistence of liquid/gas at the critical point of evaporation of water, to snowflakes, to the tortuous coastline of the Norwegian fjords, to the behavior of many complex systems such as economic data, or the complex patterns of human agglomeration. Here we review the recent advances in self-similarity of co…
