We present a new prescription for the resummation of contributions due to soft gluon emission to the trasverse momentum distribution of processes such as Drell-Yan production in hadronic collisions. We show that familiar difficulties in obtaining resummed results as a function of transverse momentum starting from impact-parameter space resummation are related to the divergence of the perturbative expansion of the momentum-space result. We construct a resummed expression by Borel resummation of this divergent series, removing the divergence in the Borel inversion through the inclusion of a suitable higher twist term. The ensuing resummation prescription is free of numerical instabilities, is stable upon the inclusion of subleading terms, and the original divergent perturbative series is asymptotic to it. We compare our results to those obtained using alternative prescriptions, and discuss the ambiguities related to the resummation procedure.
The bilocal expansion of Borel transform provides an efficient way of Borel resummation with low order perturbations in QCD. Its applications to the heavy quark pole mass, static potential, and lattice calculation are reviewed.
We show that the well-known divergence of the perturbative expansion of resummed results for processes such as deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan in the soft limit can be treated by Borel resummation. The divergence in the Borel inversion can be removed by the inclusion of suitable higher twist terms. This provides us with an alternative to the standard 'minimal prescription' for the asymptotic summation of the perturbative expansion, and it gives us some handle on the role of higher twist corrections in the soft resummation region.
A modified Borel transform of the Adler function is used to resum the hadronic tau decay width ratio. In contrast to the ordinary Borel transform, the integrand of the Borel integral is renormalization--scale invariant. We use an ansatz which explicitly accounts for the structure of the leading infrared renormalon. Further, we use judiciously chosen conformal transformations for the Borel variable, in order to map sufficiently away from the origin the other ultraviolet and infrared renormalon singularities. In addition, we apply Pade approximants for the corresponding truncated perturbation se…
We present a Borel resummation method for the QCD corrections in inclusive, charmless, semileptonic B meson decay. The renormalon contributions are resummed to all orders by employing a bilocal expansion of the Borel transform that accurately accounts for the first infrared renormalons in the Borel plane. The renormalons in the pole mass and the QCD expansion are resummed separately, and a precise relation is obtained between a properly defined pole mass and the ${\bar {\rm MS}}$ mass. The inclusive decay rate is calculated to three loop order using an estimate of the yet unknown NNLO coeffici…
We present a new prescription for the resummation of the divergent series of perturbative corrections, due to soft gluon emission, to hard processes near threshold in perturbative QCD (threshold resummation). This prescription is based on Borel resummation, and contrary to the commonly used minimal prescription, it does not introduce a dependence of resummed physical observables on the kinematically unaccessible x->0 region of parton distributions. We compare results for resummed deep-inelastic scattering obtained using the Borel prescription and the minimal prescription and exploit the compar…
The divergent perturbative expansion of the free-energy density of thermal SU(3) gauge theory is resummed into a rapidly convergent series using a novel, variational, implementation of the method of conformal mapping of the corresponding Borel series. The resummed result differs significantly from non-perturbative lattice simulations and the discrepancy is attributed to the presence of a pole on the positive axis of the Borel plane. The position of that pole is determined numerically and the difference between the lattice data and the resummed series is related to a phenomenological bag `const…
Using the CCFR data for the Gross--Llewellyn Smith (GLS) sum rule, we extract the strong coupling constant via Borel resummation of the perturbative QCD calculation. The method incorporates the correct nature of the first infrared renormalon singularity, and employs a conformal mapping to improve the convergence of the QCD perturbation expansion. The important twist-four contribution is calculated from resummation of the perturbation theory, which is based on the ansatz that the higher--twist contribution has a cut singularity only along the positive real axis on the complex coupling plane. Th…
Exact large-$N_{f}$ results for the QCD Adler $D$-function and Deep Inelastic Scattering sum rules are used to resum to all orders the portion of QCD perturbative coefficients containing the highest power of $b$=$\frac{1}{6}(11N$--$2N_{f})$, for SU($N$) QCD with $N_{f}$ quark flavours. These terms correspond to renormalon singularities in the Borel plane and are expected asymptotically to dominate the coefficients to all orders in the $1/N_{f}$ expansion. Remarkably, we note that this is already apparent in comparisons with the exact next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-NLO (NNLO) perturbat…
We study the resummation of large logarithmic QCD corrections for the process pp ->H+ X when the Higgs boson H is produced at high transverse momentum. The corrections arise near the threshold for partonic reaction and originate from soft gluon emission. We perform the all-order resummation at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and match the resummed result with the next-to-leading order perturbative predictions. The effect of resummation on the Higgs transverse momentum distribution at the LHC is discussed.
A complete description of W and Z boson production at high-energy hadron colliders requires the resummation of large Sudakov double logarithms which dominate the transverse momentum (q_T) distribution at small q_T. We compare different prescriptions for performing this resummation, in particular implicit impact parameter space resummation versus explicit transverse momentum space resummation. We argue that the latter method can be formulated so as to retain the advantages of the former, while at the same time allowing a smooth transition to finite order dominance at high q_T.
We present a universal formalism for transverse momentum resummation in the view of soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), and establish the relation between our SCET formula and the well known Collins-Soper-Sterman's pQCD formula at the next-to-leading logarithmic order (NLLO). We also briefly discuss the reformulation of joint resummation in SCET.
We consider the transverse-momentum distribution of colourless high-mass systems (lepton pairs, vector bosons, Higgs particles...) produced in hadronic collisions. We briefly review a formalism for the all-order resummation of the logarithmically-enhanced contributions at small transverse momenta, and we present an illustrative selection of numerical results obtained by using our method.
I report on precision comparisons of theoretical predictions for Drell-Yan (DY) transverse momentum spectra from two approaches: the analytical resummation approach based on Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism and the parton branching (PB) approach to the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distributions.
We present a combined resummation for the transverse momentum distribution of a colorless final state in perturbative QCD, expressed as a function of transverse momentum pt and the scaling variable x. Its expression satisfies three requirements: it reduces to standard transverse momentum resummation to any desired logarithmic order in the limit pt-> 0 for fixed x, up to power suppressed corrections in pt; it reduces to threshold resummation to any desired logarithmic order in the limit x-> 1 for fixed pt, up to power suppressed correction in 1-x; upon integration over transverse momentum it re…
We have developed a framework for automated transverse momentum resummation for arbitrary electroweak final states based on reweighting tree-level events. It is fully differential in the kinematics of the electroweak final states, which facilitates a straightforward analysis of arbitrary observables in the small transverse momentum region. We have implemented the resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and match to next-to-leading fixed-order results using the event generator MadGraph5_aMC@NLO. Results for $Z$ and $W$ boson production with leptonic decay as well as $WZ$ pro…
We study the transverse momentum resummation for dijet correlation in hadron collisions based on the Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism. The complete one-loop calculations are carried out in the collinear factorization framework for the differential cross sections at low imbalance transverse momentum between the two jets. Important cross checks are performed to demonstrate that the soft divergences cancelled out between different diagrams, and in particular, those associated with final state jets. The leading and sub-leading logarithms are identified. All order resummation is derived following th…
We present precision calculations of the invariant-mass and transverse-momentum distributions of gaugino pairs produced at hadron colliders. We implement the threshold and transverse-momentum resummation formalisms at next-to-leading order accuracy and match the obtained result to the perturbative prediction at O(alpha_s). We compare the various resummed cross sections with the perturbative results and Monte Carlo predictions. The theoretical uncertainties coming from renormalisation and factorisation scale variations are also discussed.
We study resummation of transverse-momentum-related large logarithms generated from soft-gluon radiations in soft-collinear effective field theory. The anomalous dimensions of the effective quark and gluon currents, an important ingredient for the resummation, are calculated to two-loop order. the result at next-to-leading-log reproduces that obtained using the standard method for deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan process, and Higgs production through gluon-gluon fusion. We comment on the extension of the calculation to next-to-next-to-leading logarithms.
We present precision calculations of the transverse-momentum spectrum and the invariant-mass distribution for slepton pair production at hadron colliders. We implement the transverse-momentum, threshold and joint resummation formalisms at the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and consistently match the obtained result with the pure perturbative result at the first order in the strong coupling constant, i.e. at order alpha_s. We give numerical predictions for selectron and stau pair production, and compare the various resummed cross sections with the perturbative result.
We present an upgraded calculation of the effects of resonance-continuum interference for the Higgs boson decaying to two photons at the Large Hadron Collider, at next-to-leading order in the strong coupling $α_S$, $O(α_S^3)$, and including transverse-momentum ($q_T$) resummation at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We study the importance of the interference contribution in different transverse-momentum regions, with a particular focus on the low $q_T$ region $q_T^2 << Q^2$ (with $Q^2$ being the invariant diphoton mass) where resummation becomes essential for a reliable calculation.
The distribution of W and Z bosons produced with small transverse momentum (pt) at hadron colliders receives important contributions from large logarithms arising from soft gluon emission. Although conventionally the all-orders resummation of these `Sudakov' logarithms is performed in impact parameter (Fourier transform) space, pt-space resummation is also possible, and offers certain advantages. We present a detailed phenomenological analysis of W and Z production at small pt at the Tevatron $p \bar p$ collider, using pt-space resummation. A good description of the CDF and D0 data can be obtai…
We calculate the transverse-momentum $Q_T$ spectrum of the dilepton in the transversely polarized Drell-Yan process on the basis of the factorization theorem in QCD. We take into account universal logarithmically enhanced corrections in edge region of phase space by resumming multiple soft-gluon emissions to all orders in the small $Q_T$ region.
We perform the transverse-momentum resummation for $W^{+}W^{-}$, $ZZ$, and $W^{\pm}Z$ pair productions at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy using soft-collinear effective theory for $\sqrt{S}=8 \text{TeV}$ and $\sqrt{S}=14 \text{TeV}$ at the LHC, respectively. Especially, this is the first calculation of $W^{\pm}Z$ transverse-momentum resummation. We also include the non-perturbative effects and discussions on the PDF uncertainties. Comparing with the next-to-leading logarithmic results, the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic resummation can reduce the dependence of the transve…
We describe an alternative approach to the prediction of W and Z transverse momentum distributions based on an extended version of the DDT formula. The resummation of large logarithms, mandatory at small qT, is performed in qT-space, rather than in the impact parameter b. The leading, next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading towers of logarithms are identical in the b-space and qT-space approaches. We argue that these terms are sufficient for W and Z production in the region in which perturbation theory can be trusted. Direct resummation in qT-space provides a unified description of vector …
It is easy to sum chain-free self-energy rainbows, to obtain contributions to anomalous dimensions. It is also easy to resum rainbow-free self-energy chains. Taming the combinatoric explosion of all possible nestings and chainings of a primitive self-energy divergence is a much more demanding problem. We solve it in terms of the coproduct $Δ$, antipode S, and grading operator Y of the Hopf algebra of undecorated rooted trees. The vital operator is $S\star Y$, with a star product effected by $Δ$. We perform 30-loop Padé-Borel resummation of 463 020 146 037 416 130 934 BPHZ subtractions in Yukaw…
We study the factorization and resummation of the transverse momentum spectrum of the color sextet and antitriplet scalars produced at the LHC based on soft-collinear effective theory. Compared to Z boson and Higgs production, a soft function is required to account for the soft gluon emission from the final-state colored scalar. The soft function is calculated at the next-to-leading order, and the resummation is performed at the approximate next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The non-perturbative effects and PDF uncertainties are also discussed.
We analyze transverse thrust in the framework of Soft Collinear Effective Theory and obtain a factorized expression for the cross section that permits resummation of terms enhanced in the dijet limit to arbitrary accuracy. The factorization theorem for this hadron-collider event-shape variable involves collinear emissions at different virtualities and suffers from a collinear anomaly. We compute all its ingredients at the one-loop order, and show that the two-loop input for next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy can be extracted numerically, from existing fixed-order codes.
We consider the resummation of the perturbation series describing the energy displacement of a hydrogenic bound state in an electric field (known as the Stark effect or the LoSurdo-Stark effect), which constitutes a divergent formal power series in the electric field strength. The perturbation series exhibits a rich singularity structure in the Borel plane. Resummation methods are presented which appear to lead to consistent results even in problematic cases where isolated singularities or branch cuts are present on the positive and negative real axis in the Borel plane. Two resummation prescr…
We consider the resummation of soft-gluon emission in the transverse-momentum distribution of vector mesons in hadronic collisions. We find that the resummed expression in the impact-parameter formulation has an expansion in $\as$ with factorially growing terms with oscillating signs. These diverging terms arise from the small impact-parameter region of integration, and are of a subleading nature. We also obtain a closed expression for the next-to-leading logarithm resummation in $\qt$-space, and we study its analytic structure. We find in this case that, although no factorially growing terms …
We derive a general resummation formula for transverse-momentum distributions of hard processes at the leading logarithmic level in the high-energy limit, to all orders in the strong coupling. Our result is based on a suitable generalization of high-energy factorization theorems, whereby all-order resummation is reduced to the determination of the Born-level process but with incoming off-shell gluons. We validate our formula by applying it to Higgs production in gluon fusion in the infinite top mass limit. We check our result up to next-to-leading order by comparison to the high energy limit o…
We consider the cross section for one-particle inclusive production at high transverse momentum in hadronic collisions. We present the all-order resummation formula that controls the logarithmically-enhanced perturbative QCD contributions to the partonic cross section in the threshold region, at fixed rapidity of the observed parton (hadron). The explicit resummation up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy is supplemented with the computation of the general structure of the near-threshold contributions to the next-to-leading order cross section. This next-to-leading order computation allows…
A method for the resummation of nonalternating divergent perturbation series is described. The procedure constitutes a generalization of the Borel-Padé method. Of crucial importance is a special integration contour in the complex plane. Nonperturbative imaginary contributions can be inferred from the purely real perturbative coefficients. A connection is drawn from the quantum field theoretic problem of resummation to divergent perturbative expansions in other areas of physics.
We present a more reliable approach to approximate the unknown next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) transverse momentum distribution of colourless final states, namely the Higgs boson produced via gluon fusion and the lepton pair produced via Drell--Yan (DY) mechanism. The approximation we construct relies on the combination of various resummation formalisms -- namely threshold, small-pt and high energy resummations -- by exploiting the singularity structure of the large logarithms in Mellin space. We show that for the case of Higgs boson production, the approximate N3LO transverse mom…
The cross sections describing the transverse momentum distributions of Higgs bosons are discussed within the framework of unintegrated parton distributions obtained from the CCFM equations in the single loop approximation. It is shown how the approximate treatment of the CCFM equations generates the standard expressions describing the soft gluon resummation effects in the corresponding cross sections. Possible differences between exact and approximate solutions of the CCFM equations are discussed on the example of the gg -> H fusion mechanism, which gives the dominant contribution to Higgs pro…
We study the application of the joint resummation to electroweak boson production at hadron colliders. The joint resummation formalism resums both threshold and transverse momentum corrections to the transverse momentum distribution at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We obtain a good description of the transverse momentum distribution of Z bosons produced at the Tevatron collider.
We study the resummation of singular distributions for electroweak-boson production at large transverse momentum in hadronic collisions. We describe the factorization properties of the cross section near partonic threshold and construct the resummed cross section at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in moment space in terms of soft gluon anomalous dimensions. We present full analytical results for the expansion of the resummed cross section up to next-to-next-to-leading order. Our results can be applied to W, Z, and virtual gamma production at hadron colliders.
We consider the associated production of a vector or Higgs boson with a jet in hadronic collisions. When the transverse momentum $q_T$ of the boson-jet system is much smaller than its invariant mass $Q$, the QCD perturbative expansion is affected by large logarithmic terms that must be resummed to all orders. We discuss the all-order resummation structure of the logarithmically enhanced contributions up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Resummation is performed at the differential level with respect to the kinematical variables of the boson-jet system. Soft-parton radiation produces azi…
We study the transverse-momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS). We consider cross sections for various combinations of polarizations of the initial lepton and nucleon or the produced hadron, for which we perform the resummation of large double-logarithmic perturbative corrections arising at small transverse momentum. We present phenomenological results for the processes $lp\to lπX$ with longitudinally polarized leptons and protons. We discuss the impact of the perturbative resummation and of estimated non-perturbative contributions on the …
The perturbation series for electroweak vector boson production at small transverse momentum is dominated by large double logarithms at each order in perturbation theory. An accurate theoretical prediction therefore requires a resummation of these logarithms. This can be performed either directly in transverse momentum space or in impact parameter (Fourier transform) space. While both approaches resum the same leading double logarithms, the subleading logarithms are, in general, treated differently. We comment on two recent approaches to this problem, emphasising the particular subleading loga…
We compute the resummed hadronic transverse energy (E_T) distribution due to initial-state QCD radiation in vector boson and Higgs boson production at hadron colliders. The resummed exponent, parton distributions and coefficient functions are treated consistently to next-to-leading order. The results are matched to fixed-order calculations at large E_T and compared with parton-shower Monte Carlo predictions at Tevatron and LHC energies.
We develop a framework for a systematic resummation of the transverse momentum distribution of top-quark pairs produced at hadron colliders based on effective field theory. Compared to Drell-Yan and Higgs production, a novel soft function matrix is required to account for the soft gluon emissions from the final states. We calculate this soft function at the next-to-leading order, and perform the resummation at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We compare our results with parton shower programs and with the experimental data at the Tevatron and the LHC. We also discuss the impli…
We derive a general expression for the threshold resummation of transverse momentum distributions for processes with a colorless final state, by suitably generalizing the renormalization-group based approach to threshold resummation previously pursued by two of us. The ensuing expression holds to all logarithmic orders, and it can be used to extend available results in the literature, which only hold up to the next-to-leading log (NLL) level. We check agreement of our result with the existing NLL result, as well as against the known fixed next-to-leading order results for the Higgs transverse …
We perform a first precision calculation of the transverse-momentum (q_T) distribution of slepton pair and slepton-sneutrino associated production at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We implement soft-gluon resummation at the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) level and consistently match the obtained result to the pure fixed-order perturbative result at leading order (LO) in the QCD coupling constant, i.e. O(alpha_s). We give numerical predictions for stau_1 stau_1^* and stau_1 sneutrino_tau^* + stau_1^* sneutrino_tau production, also implementing recent parameterizations of non-perturbat…
We study the impact of initial-state multiple parton radiation on transverse momentum $(q_T)$ distribution of Higgs boson produced via bottom quark fusion at hadron colliders. The shape of the resulting $q_T$ distribution is affected by the bottom-quark mass corrections and by the strong kinematical behavior of the bottom-quark parton density. We account for both features in the full range of $q_T$. To do this, we formulate the resummation calculation in a general-mass factorization (S-ACOT) scheme and introduce a correction in the resummed-term to account for the effect from large-$q_T$ kinem…
We study the effect of multiple parton radiation to Higgs boson plus jet production at the LHC, by applying the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization formalism to resum large logarithmic contributions to all orders in the expansion of the strong interaction coupling. We show that the appropriate resummation scale should be the jet transverse momentum, rather than the partonic center of mass energy which has been normally used in the TMD resummation formalism. Furthermore, the transverse momentum distribution of the Higgs boson, particularly near the lower cut-off applied on the jet…
We consider the transverse-momentum (q_T) distribution of generic high-mass systems (lepton pairs, vector bosons, Higgs particles, ....) produced in hadron collisions. At small q_T, we concentrate on the all-order resummation of the logarithmically-enhanced contributions in QCD perturbation theory. We elaborate on the $b$-space resummation formalism and introduce some novel features: the large logarithmic contributions are systematically exponentiated in a process-independent form and, after integration over q_T, they are constrained by perturbative unitarity to give a vanishing contribution t…
We compute the resummed hadronic transverse-energy ($E_T$) distribution due to initial-state QCD radiation in the production of a Standard Model Higgs boson of mass 126 GeV by gluon fusion at the Large Hadron Collider, with matching to next-to-leading order calculations at large $E_T$. Effects of hadronization, underlying event and limited detector acceptance are estimated using aMC@NLO with the Herwig++ and Pythia 8 event generators.
We present a general framework that allows to compute the resummed transverse-momentum distribution of a system of colorless particles. The implementation is fully differential in the degrees of freedom of the final-state system. As a first application, we consider the transverse-momentum spectrum of ZZ and WW boson pairs produced in hadron collisions, where we resum the logarithmically enhanced contributions due to multiple soft-gluon emission at small transverse momenta to all orders in perturbation theory. We exploit the most advanced perturbative information for the ZZ and WW production pr…
We present a first precision analysis of the transverse-momentum spectrum of gaugino pairs produced at the LHC with center-of-mass energies of 10 or 14 TeV. Our calculation is based on a universal resummation formalism at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, which is consistently matched to the perturbative prediction at O(alpha_s). Numerical results are given for the ``gold-plated'' associated production of neutralinos and charginos for a typical benchmark point in the constrained Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We show that the matched resummation results differ considerably from the…
Following an earlier derivation by Catani-de Florian-Grazzini (2000) on the scheme dependence in the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) resummation formalism in hard scattering processes, we investigate the scheme dependence of the Transverse Momentum Distributions (TMDs) and their applications. By adopting a universal $C$-coefficient function associated with the integrated parton distributions, the difference between various TMD schemes can be attributed to a perturbative calculable function depending on the hard momentum scale. We further apply several TMD schemes to the Drell-Yan process of lepton…
We present a first precision analysis of the transverse-momentum spectrum of gaugino pairs produced at the Tevatron and the LHC with center-of-mass energies of 1.96 and 10 or 14 TeV, respectively. Our calculation is based on a universal resummation formalism at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, which is consistently matched to the perturbative prediction at ${\cal O}(α_s)$. Numerical results are given for the "gold-plated" associated production of neutralinos and charginos decaying into three charged leptons with missing transverse energy as well as for the pair production of neutralinos a…
We derive a resummation formula for a $k_T$-dependent parton distribution function at threshold, where $k_T$ is a parton transverse momentum. The derivation requires infrared cutoffs for both longitudinal and transverse loop momenta as evaluating soft gluon emissions in the Collins-Soper resummation framework. This unified resummation exhibits suppression at large $b$, $b$ being the conjugate variable of $k_T$, which is similar to the $k_T$ resummation, and exhibits enhancement at small $b$, similar to the threshold resummation.
We obtain a prediction for the hadron-collider event-shape variable transverse thrust in which the terms enhanced in the dijet limit are resummed to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Our method exploits universality properties made manifest in the factorized expression for the cross section and only requires one-loop calculations. The necessary two-loop ingredients are extracted using known results and existing numerical codes. Our technique is general and applicable to other observables as well.
We consider the transverse-momentum (qT) distribution of a diphoton pair produced in hadron collisions. At small values of qT , we resum the logarithmically-enhanced perturbative QCD contributions up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. At intermediate and large values of qT, we consistently combine resummation with the known next-to-leading order perturbative result. All perturbative terms up to order α_S^2 are included in our computation which, after integration over qT, reproduces the known next-to-next-to-leading order result for the diphoton pair production total cross section…
We derive a compact expression for the Borel sum of a QCD amplitude in terms of the inverse Mellin transform of the corresponding Borel function. The result allows us to investigate the momentum-plane analyticity properties of the Borel-summed Green functions in perturbative QCD. An interesting connection between the asymptotic behaviour of the Borel transform and the Landau singularities in the momentum plane is established. We consider for illustration the polarization function of massless quarks and the resummation of one-loop renormalon chains in the large-$β_0$ limit, but our conclusions …
We perform a global analysis of transverse momentum distributions in Drell-Yan pair and Z boson production in order to investigate universality of nonperturbative contributions to the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummed form factor. Our fit made in an improved nonperturbative model suggests that the nonperturbative contributions follow universal nearly-linear dependence on the logarithm of the heavy boson invariant mass Q, which closely agrees with an estimate from the infrared renormalon analysis.
Analysis of semi-inclusive DIS hadroproduction suggests broadening of transverse momentum distributions at $x$ below a few $10^{-3}$, which can be modeled in the Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism by a modification of impact-parameter-dependent parton densities. We discuss the consequences of such a modification for the production of electroweak bosons at hadron-hadron colliders. If substantial small-$x$ broadening is observed in forward Z boson production in the Tevatron Run-2, it will strongly affect predicted transverse momentum distributions for W, Z, and Higgs boson production at the Large H…
We demonstrate that both the $k_T$ and threshold resummations can be performed in the Collins-Soper resummation formalism by evaluating soft gluon emissions with infrared cutoffs for the longitudinal and transverse loop momenta, respectively. The reason the $k_T$ resummation for a parton distribution function leads to suppression in the large $b$ region, $b$ being the conjugate variable of parton transverse momentum $k_T$, and the threshold resummation leads to enhancement in the large $N$ limit, $N$ being the moment of a distribution function, is a consequence of opposite directions of double…
We evaluate the impact of heavy-quark masses on transverse momentum distributions of W, Z, and supersymmetric neutral Higgs bosons at the Tevatron and LHC. The masses of charm and bottom quarks act as non-negligible momentum scales at small transverse momentum, and affect resummation of soft and collinear radiation. We point out inconsistencies in the treatment of heavy-flavor channels at small transverse momentum in massless factorization schemes, and formulate small transverse momentum resummation in a general-mass variable flavor number factorization scheme. The improved treatment of the qu…
