We present a new prescription for the resummation of the divergent series of perturbative corrections, due to soft gluon emission, to hard processes near threshold in perturbative QCD (threshold resummation). This prescription is based on Borel resummation, and contrary to the commonly used minimal prescription, it does not introduce a dependence of resummed physical observables on the kinematically unaccessible x->0 region of parton distributions. We compare results for resummed deep-inelastic scattering obtained using the Borel prescription and the minimal prescription and exploit the comparison to discuss the ambiguities related to the resummation procedure.
I briefly summarize some general features of soft-gluon contribution to inclusive cross-sections. The discussion includes the issue of soft-gluon singularities in infrared- and collinear-safe observables. All-order resummation and the ensuing varieties of QCD predictions are illustrated.
We summarize recent progress in the resummation of perturbative evolution at small x. We show that the problem of incorporating BFKL small x logs in GLAP evolution is now completely solved, and that the main effect of small x resummation is to reduce the growth of the gluon at small x in the HERA and LHC regions.

We study resummation of transverse-momentum-related large logarithms generated from soft-gluon radiations in soft-collinear effective field theory. The anomalous dimensions of the effective quark and gluon currents, an important ingredient for the resummation, are calculated to two-loop order. the result at next-to-leading-log reproduces that obtained using the standard method for deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan process, and Higgs production through gluon-gluon fusion. We comment on the extension of the calculation to next-to-next-to-leading logarithms.
Parton distribution functions are determined by the comparison of finite-order calculations with data. We briefly discuss the interplay of higher order corrections and PDF determinations, and the use of soft-gluon resummation in global fits.
We describe a new framework for soft gluon resummation, based on path integral methods. The approach recovers previous results obtained in the eikonal approximation, in which all emitted gluons become soft. Furthermore, a clear physical interpretation allows straightforward extension of the framework to beyond the eikonal approximation, and we use this to classify the structure of next-to-eikonal corrections to matrix elements.
I discuss the effectiveness of soft-gluon resummations in describing higher-order corrections. I present a comparison of recent resummation approaches and their relative successes in approximating complete NNLO corrections. I also discuss fixed-order expansions through NNNLO and present some recent applications to QCD hard-scattering processes, including top-antitop pair production, single-top production, and W production at large transverse momentum.
We present a new prescription for the resummation of contributions due to soft gluon emission to the trasverse momentum distribution of processes such as Drell-Yan production in hadronic collisions. We show that familiar difficulties in obtaining resummed results as a function of transverse momentum starting from impact-parameter space resummation are related to the divergence of the perturbative expansion of the momentum-space result. We construct a resummed expression by Borel resummation of this divergent series, removing the divergence in the Borel inversion through the inclusion of a suit…
We use a recent approach to soft-gluon resummation based on effective field theory to implement soft-gluon resummation at NNNLL order for slepton-pair production in SUSY extensions of the Standard Model. This approach resums large logarithmic corrections arising from the dynamical enhancement of the partonic threshold region caused by steeply falling parton luminosities. We evaluate the resummed invariant-mass distribution and total cross section for slepton-pair production at the Tevatron and LHC, matching our results onto NLO fixed-order calculations. As a byproduct, we also study virtual SU…
We derive all order soft gluon resummation in dijet azimuthal angular correlation in hadronic collisions at the next-to-leading logarithmic level. The relevant coefficients for the Sudakov resummation factor, the soft and hard factors, are calculated. The theory predictions agree well with the experimental data from D0 Collaboration at the Tevatron. This provides a benchmark calculation for the transverse momentum dependent QCD resummation for jet productions in hadron collisions and can be readily applied at the CERN LHC.
Two recent attempts for overcoming the poor convergence of the perturbation expansion of the thermodynamic potentials of QCD are discussed: an HTL-adaption of ``screened perturbation theory'' and approximately self-consistent HTL resummations in the two-loop entropy.
I discuss the effect of resummation of soft gluons in hadronic production of high mass systems, and in particular in heavy flavour production. I show that in widely used $x$-space resummation formulae, spurious terms that grow factorially in the order of the perturbative expansion are present. These terms spoil the convergence of the perturbative expansion. I also show that it is possible to perform the soft gluon resummation in such a way that these terms are not present. Implications for top and high mass dijet production at the Tevatron are discussed.
We discuss a model for total hadronic and photonic cross-sections which includes hard parton-parton scattering to drive the rise and soft gluon resummation to tame it. Unitarity is ensured by embedding the cross-section in the eikonal formalism. Predictions for LHC and ILC are presented.
Soft-gluon resummation within the framework of heavy quarkonium hadroproduction is considered. A few selected cases are studied in detail. A sizeable increase of the cross sections with respect to the next-to-leading order predictions with central factorization/renormalization scale choice can generally be observed. Improvements in the dependence of the cross sections on the two scales, especially when they are kept equal, are also found.
A strategy for calculating the color structure needed for soft gluon resummation for processes with any number of colored partons is introduced using a N_c --> infinity inspired basis. In this basis a general formalism can be found at the same time as the calculations are simplified. The advantages are illustrated by recalculating the soft anomalous dimension matrix for the processes gg --> gg, q\qbar --> q \qbar g and q\qbar --> ggg.
We perform resummation of soft gluon corrections to the total cross section for the process $pp \to t\bar{t}H$. The resummation is carried out at next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy using the Mellin space technique, extending its application to the class of $2 \to 3$ processes. We present an analytical result for the soft anomalous dimension for a hadronic production of two coloured massive particles in association with a colour singlet. We discuss the impact of resummation on the numerical prediction for the associated Higgs boson production with top quarks at the LHC.
We present our results on soft gluon resummation in the invariant mass threshold applied to the associated production of a top quark pair with a W boson at the LHC in the Mellin space formalism.
Inclusion of down to zero-momentum gluons and their k_t resummation is shown to quench the too fast rise of the mini jet cross section and thereby obtain realistic total cross-sections.
In the following we present our recent results on the resummation of soft gluon corrections to the $pp\rightarrow t\bar{t}H$ cross section at the LHC. The resummation was carried out at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy using the Mellin space technique. Obtained results were matched to the NLO cross section. We show that the resummation leads to reduction of scale-variation uncertainty of the total $pp\rightarrow t\bar{t}H$ cross section.
We present a phenomenological study of Drell-Yan pair production at hadron colliders based on the NNLO fixed order calculation and on NNLL resummation of threshold logarithms. We give an argument to prove that resummation effects are relevant also for values of x=M^2/s far from threshold. We compare different prescriptions for the calculation of resummed quantities, emphasizing the differences coming from subleading terms, which are important when x is small. We present phenomenological predictions for Drell-Yan rapidity distributions at the LHC, we study the ambiguity related to the resummati…
We consider QCD corrections to Higgs boson production through gluon--gluon fusion in hadron collisions. We compute the cross section, performing the all-order resummation of multiple soft-gluon emission at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic level. Known fixed-order results (up to next-to-next-to-leading order) are consistently included in our calculation. We give phenomenological predictions for Higgs boson production at the Tevatron and at the LHC. We estimate the residual theoretical uncertainty from perturbative QCD contributions. We also quantify the differences obtained by using the pres…
We study the effect of soft gluon resummation on the gaps-between-jets cross-section at the LHC. We review the theoretical framework that enables one to sum logarithms of the hard scale over the veto scale to all orders in perturbation theory. We then present a study of the phenomenological impact of Coulomb gluon contributions and super-leading logarithms on the gaps between jets cross-section at the LHC.
I discuss the motivation for resummation of the effects of initial-state soft gluon radiation, to all orders in the strong coupling strength, for processes in which the near-threshold region in the partonic subenergy is important. I summarize the method of "perturbative resummation" and its application to the calculation of the total cross section for top quark production at hadron colliders. Comments are included on the differences between the treatment of subleading logarithmic terms in this method and in other approaches.
In this talk I briefly discuss the thermodynamics of the quark-gluon plasma The calculation of the free energy of a hot gluon plasma to leading order in hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory is outlined. The HTL free energy is compared with the weak-coupling expansion and lattice results.
We compute the threshold-resummed cross section for pseudo-scalar MSSM Higgs boson production by gluon fusion at hadron colliders. The calculation is performed at next-to-next-to leading logarithmic accuracy. We present results for both the LHC and Tevatron Run II. We analyze the factorization and renormalization scale dependence of the results, finding that after performing the resummation the corresponding cross section can be computed with an accuracy better than 10%.
The distribution of W and Z bosons produced with small transverse momentum (pt) at hadron colliders receives important contributions from large logarithms arising from soft gluon emission. Although conventionally the all-orders resummation of these `Sudakov' logarithms is performed in impact parameter (Fourier transform) space, pt-space resummation is also possible, and offers certain advantages. We present a detailed phenomenological analysis of W and Z production at small pt at the Tevatron $p \bar p$ collider, using pt-space resummation. A good description of the CDF and D0 data can be obtai…
We present a calculation of the total cross section for top quark production based on a new perturbative resummation of gluon radiative corrections to the basic QCD subprocesses. We use Principal Value Resummation to calculate all relevant large threshold corrections. Advantages of this method include its independence from arbitrary infrared cutoffs and specification of the perturbative regime of applicability. For $p\bar{p}$ collisions at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1.8$TeV and a top mass of 175 GeV, we compute $σ(t\bar{t})=5.52^{+0.07}_{-0.45}pb$.
We discuss the procedure to resum large logarithms to all orders for DIS event shape variable distributions. Results are described for two variants of the thrust variable, both defined wrt the boson axis in the current hemisphere of the Breit frame, but with different normalisations.
The resummation of threshold logarithms for direct photon production cross sections in hadronic collisions is presented. The resummation is based on the factorization properties of the cross section and is formulated at next-to-leading logarithmic or higher accuracy. Full analytical and numerical results for the next-to-next-to-leading order expansion of the resummed cross section are given. A substantial reduction of factorization scale dependence is observed. A comparison to experimental results from the E-706 and UA-6 experiments is presented.
A model for total cross-sections incorporating QCD jet cross-sections and soft gluon resummation is described and compared with present data on $pp$ and ${\bar p}p$ cross-sections. Predictions for LHC are presented for different parameter sets. It is shown that they differ according to the small x-behaviour of available parton density functions.
We discuss a model for soft gluon re-summation based on a statistical description of independent emissions during inelastic collisions. The model is applied to estimate Survival Probabilities at the LHC. A comparison with other models and experimental data is presented.
We study the effect of soft gluon emission on the total cross section predictions for the $gg\to HZ$ associated Higgs production process at the LHC. To this end, we perform resummation of threshold corrections at the NLL accuracy in the absolute threshold production limit and in the threshold limit for production of a $ZH$ system with a given invariant mass. Analytical results and numerical predictions for various possible LHC collision energies are presented. The perturbative stability of the results is verified by including universal NNLL effects. We find that resummation significantly reduc…
We compare the high energy behaviour of hadronic photon-photon cross-sections in different models. We find that the photon-photon cross-section appears to rise faster than the purely hadronic ones (proton-proton and proton-antiproton).
We compute the effects of soft gluon resummation for the production of high mass systems in hadronic collisions. We carefully analyse the growth of the perturbative expansion coefficients of the resummation formula. We propose an expression consistent with the known leading and next-to-leading resummation results, in which the coefficients grow much less than factorially. We apply our formula to Drell--Yan pair production, heavy flavour production, and the production of high invariant mass jet pairs in hadronic collisions. We find that, with our formula, resummation effects become important on…
We consider the production of a generic system of non-strongly interacting particles with a high total invariant mass M in hadron collisions. We examine the transverse-momentum (q_T) distribution of the system in the small-q_T region (q_T << M), and we present a study of the perturbative QCD contributions that are enhanced by powers of large logarithmic terms of the type ln (M^2/q_T^2). These terms can be resummed to all orders in QCD perturbation theory. The partonic production mechanism of the final-state system can be controlled by quark-antiquark (qqbar) annihilation and/or by gluon fusion…
Event-shape distributions in $e^+e^-$ annihilation offer a unique lab oratory for understanding perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of QCD. Dressed Gluon Exponentiation is a resummation method designed to evaluate differ ential cross sections close to a kinematic threshold and provide the basis for parametrization of power corrections. The method and its application in the case of the thrust and the heavy jet mass distributions in the two-jet region are briefly presented.
We derive a general resummation formula for transverse-momentum distributions of hard processes at the leading logarithmic level in the high-energy limit, to all orders in the strong coupling. Our result is based on a suitable generalization of high-energy factorization theorems, whereby all-order resummation is reduced to the determination of the Born-level process but with incoming off-shell gluons. We validate our formula by applying it to Higgs production in gluon fusion in the infinite top mass limit. We check our result up to next-to-leading order by comparison to the high energy limit o…
We consider the resummation of soft-gluon emission in the transverse-momentum distribution of vector mesons in hadronic collisions. We find that the resummed expression in the impact-parameter formulation has an expansion in $\as$ with factorially growing terms with oscillating signs. These diverging terms arise from the small impact-parameter region of integration, and are of a subleading nature. We also obtain a closed expression for the next-to-leading logarithm resummation in $\qt$-space, and we study its analytic structure. We find in this case that, although no factorially growing terms …
We calculate the transverse-momentum $Q_T$ spectrum of the dilepton in the transversely polarized Drell-Yan process on the basis of the factorization theorem in QCD. We take into account universal logarithmically enhanced corrections in edge region of phase space by resumming multiple soft-gluon emissions to all orders in the small $Q_T$ region.
After a brief review on the technique of resumming the large logarithmic terms $α^n_s \ln^m(Q^2/Q^2_T)$ due to the effects of multiple gluon emission predicted by the QCD theory, I discuss its application in the production of $W^\pm$, $Z$ and $γγ$ in hadron collision.
We consider the cross section for one-particle inclusive production at high transverse momentum in hadronic collisions. We present the all-order resummation formula that controls the logarithmically-enhanced perturbative QCD contributions to the partonic cross section in the threshold region, at fixed rapidity of the observed parton (hadron). The explicit resummation up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy is supplemented with the computation of the general structure of the near-threshold contributions to the next-to-leading order cross section. This next-to-leading order computation allows…
We gauge the impact of soft-gluon resummation on quark distributions by performing a simple fit of Deep Inelastic Scattering structure function data using next-to-leading order (NLO) and next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL)-resummed coefficient functions. We make use of NuTeV charged-current data, as well as New Muon Collaboration (NMC) and Bologna-CERN-Dubna-Munich-Saclay (BCDMS) neutral-current results, which probe large values of x. Our results suggest that the inclusion of resummation effects in global fits of parton distributions is both feasible and desirable, in order to achieve at large x…
We show that the well-known divergence of the perturbative expansion of resummed results for processes such as deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan in the soft limit can be treated by Borel resummation. The divergence in the Borel inversion can be removed by the inclusion of suitable higher twist terms. This provides us with an alternative to the standard 'minimal prescription' for the asymptotic summation of the perturbative expansion, and it gives us some handle on the role of higher twist corrections in the soft resummation region.
We study soft-gluon radiation in top quark decay within the framework of perturbative fragmentation functions. We present results for the b-quark energy distribution, accounting for soft-gluon resummation in both the MSbar coefficient function and in the initial condition of the perturbative fragmentation function. The results show remarkable improvement and the b-quark energy spectrum in top quark decay exhibits very little dependence on factorization and renormalization scales. We present some hadron-level results in both x_B and moment space by including non-perturbative information determi…
Infrared divergences of QCD scattering amplitudes can be derived from an anomalous dimension matrix, which is also an essential ingredient for the resummation of large logarithms due to soft gluon emissions. We report a recent analytical calculation of the anomalous dimension matrix with both massless and massive partons at two-loop level, which describes the two-loop infrared singularities of any scattering amplitudes with an arbitrary number of massless and massive partons, and also enables soft gluon resummation at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic order. As an application, we calculate t…
We discuss the resummation of threshold logarithms for heavy quark and dijet cross sections in hadronic collisions. The resummed cross sections are presented at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in terms of anomalous dimension matrices which describe the factorization of soft gluons from the hard scattering. We apply our formalism to the calculation of the top quark production cross section at the Fermilab Tevatron.
We present a QCD study of fragmentation processes for light and heavy quarks in the semi-inclusive region of large x. Large logarithmic terms, due to soft-gluon radiation, are evaluated and resummed to all perturbative orders in the QCD coupling alpha_s. Complete analytical results to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy are given for one-particle and two-particle inclusive distributions in e+e- annihilation and DIS. Factorization of parton radiation at low transverse momenta is exploited to identify the universal (process-independent) perturbative fragmentation function that controls heavy-qu…
We present the threshold resummation for the cross section for electroproduction of heavy quarks. We work to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and in single-particle inclusive kinematics. We provide next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading order expansions of our resummed formula, and examine numerically the quality of these finite order approximations. For the case of charm we study their impact on the structure function $F_2$ and its differential distribution with respect to the charm transverse momentum.
We study soft-gluon radiation for heavy quark production in charged-current Deep Inelastic Scattering processes. We resum large-x contributions to the MSbar coefficient function to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and present results for charm quark structure functions for several values of the ratio m_c/Q. The effect of the resummation turns out to be visible, especially at small Q^2, and the results exhibit very little dependence on factorization and renormalization scales. The impact of our calculation on structure function measurements at NuTeV and HERA experiments is discussed.
The physics underlying the fall and eventual rise in various total cross-sections at high energies has been investigated over a decade using a model based on the Bloch-Nordsieck resummation in QCD. Here a brief review of our latest results is presented and comparison made with experimental data on $pp$, $γproton$ and $γγ$ total cross-sections.
The production rate and kinematic distributions of isolated photon pairs produced in hadron interactions are studied. The effects of the initial-state multiple soft-gluon emission to the scattering subprocesses q-qbar, qg, and gg to gamma gamma X are resummed with the Collins-Soper-Sterman soft gluon resummation formalism. The effects of fragmentation photons from qg to gamma q, followed by q to gamma X, are also studied. The results are compared with data from the Fermilab Tevatron collider. A prediction of the production rate and kinematic distributions of the diphoton pair in proton-nucleon…
We present results for a combined resummation of soft and Coloumb gluon corrections in squark-antisquark production at the LHC, including the non-trivial interference of the two effects and the contribution of squark-antisquark bound states below threshold. The total correction to the next-to-leading order approximation is found to be sizeable, and amounts to 5-14 % in the squark mass region 200 GeV-2 TeV. The scale dependence of the total cross section is also reduced.
We present the threshold resummation for the cross section of heavy quark production in polarized deep-inelastic scattering to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and in single-particle inclusive kinematics. We expand our resummed result in alpha_s to next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading order and study the impact of these higher order corrections on the charm structure function g_1 in the kinematical range accessible to the HERMES and COMPASS experiments.
We report on recent results on the differential cross section for slepton pair-production at hadron colliders. We use an approach to threshold resummation, based on soft-collinear effective theory, to quantify the dynamical enhancement of the partonic threshold region. We evaluate the resummed invariant mass distribution and total cross section at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order, and match the result onto next-to-leading order calculation.
We perform a systematic comparison of soft-gluon resummation in SCET and in a standard "direct" QCD (dQCD) approach, both from an analytical and a phenomenological point of view. In particular, we concentrate on Higgs boson production in gluon-gluon fusion at a hadron collider. Using specifically a saddle point argument, we arrive at a detailed understanding of the quantitative differences between these two approaches.
We study the effect of soft gluon emission in the hadroproduction of gluino-gluino and squark-antisquark pairs at the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model. We present the calculation of the one-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices controlling the colour evolution of the underlying hard-scattering processes. The numerical results for resummed cross sections for proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider are discussed in detail.
