We establish a framework to study the classical-communication properties of primitive local operations assisted by classical communication which realize various redistributions of entanglement, like, e.g., entanglement swapping. On the one hand, we analyze what local operations and how much classical communication are needed to perform them. On the other hand, we investigate whether and to what extent such primitives can help to establish classical communication when they are used in the form of black boxes available to spatially-separated users. In particular, we find that entanglement swapping costs more communication than it can signal; in this sense, entanglement swapping is a weaker primitive than quantum teleportation.
The effect of Hawking radiation on the redistribution of the entanglement and mutual information in the Schwarzschild spacetime is investigated. Our analysis shows that the physically accessible correlations degrade while the unaccessible correlations increase as the Hawking temperature increases because the initial correlations described by inertial observers are redistributed between all the bipartite modes. It is interesting to note that, in the limit case that the temperature tends to infinity, the accessible mutual information equals to just half of its initial value, and the unaccessible…
We study the dynamics and redistribution of entanglement and coherence in three time-dependent coupled harmonic oscillators. We resolve the Schrödinger equation by using time-dependent Euler rotation together with a linear quench model to obtain the state of vacuum solution. Such state can be translated to the phase space picture to determine the Wigner distribution. We show that its Gaussian matrix $\mathbb{G}(t)$ can be used to directly cast the covariance matrix $σ(t)$. To quantify the mixedness and entanglement of the state one uses respectively linear and von Neumann entropies for three c…
We study the properties of bi-squeezed tripartite Gaussian states created by two spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes that share a common idler. We give a complete description of the quantum correlations across of all partitions, as well as of the genuine multipartite entanglement, obtaining analytical expressions for most of the quantities of interest. We find that the state contains genuine tripartite entanglement, in addition to the bipartite entanglement among the modes that are directly squeezed. We also investigate the effect of homodyne detection of the photons in the common…
We pose the fundamental question of communication properties of primitives irrespectively of their implementation. To illustrate the idea we introduce the concept of entanglement-swapping boxes, i.e. we consider any quantum operations which perform entanglement swapping, not necessarily via simple quantum teleportation. We ask a question about the properties of such boxes., i.e. what local operations and how much classical communication are needed to perform them. We also ask if any box which performs entanglement swapping can be used to establish classical communication. We show that each box…
We consider an analogue of entanglement-swapping for a set of black boxes with the most general non-local correlations consistent with relativity (including correlations which are stronger than any attainable in quantum theory). In an attempt to incorporate this phenomenon, we consider expanding the space of objects to include not only correlated boxes, but `couplers', which are an analogue for boxes of measurements with entangled eigenstates in quantum theory. Surprisingly, we find that no couplers exist for two binary-input/binary-output boxes, and hence that there is no analogue of entangle…
We analyse the entanglement tradeoff between particle and anti-particle modes of a Dirac field from the perspective of inertial and uniformly accelerated observers. Our results show that a redistribution of entanglement between particle and anti-particle modes plays a key role in the survival of fermionic field entanglement in the infinite acceleration limit.
When an initially entangled pair of qubits undergoes local decoherence processes, there are a number of ways in which the original entanglement can spread throughout the multipartite system consisting of the two qubits and their environments. Here we report theoretical and experimental results regarding the dynamics of the distribution of entanglement in this system. The experiment employs an all optical set-up in which the qubits are encoded in the polarization degrees of freedom of two photons, and each local decoherence channel is implemented with an interferometer that couples the polariza…
Quantum entanglement and coherence are two fundamental resources for quantum information processing. Recent results clearly demonstrate their relevance in quantum technological tasks, including quantum communication and quantum algorithms. In this Letter we study the role of quantum coherence for quantum state redistribution, a fundamental task where two parties aim to relocate a quantum particle by using a limited amount of quantum communication and shared entanglement. We provide general bounds for the resource rates required for this process, and show that these bounds are tight under addit…
We consider a variation of the well-studied quantum state redistribution task, in which the starting state is known only to the receiver Bob and not to the sender Alice. We refer to this as quantum state redistribution with a one-sided promise. In addition, we consider communication from Alice to Bob over a noisy channel $\mathcal{N}$, instead of the noiseless channel, as is usually considered in state redistribution. We take a natural approach towards the solution of this problem where we "embed" the promise as part of the state and then invoke known protocols for quantum state redistribution…
We consider discriminating between bipartite boxes with 2 binary inputs and 2 binary outputs (2x2) using the class of completely locality preserving operations i.e. those, which transform boxes with local hidden variable model (LHVM) into boxes with LHVM, and have this property even when tensored with identity operation. Following approach developed in entanglement theory we derive linear program which gives an upper bound on the probability of success of discrimination between different isotropic boxes. In particular we provide an upper bound on the probability of success of discrimination be…
The Minkowski vacuum $|0\rangle_M$, which for an inertial observer is devoid of particles, is treated as a thermal bath by Rindler observers living in a single Rindler wedge, as a result of the discrepancy in the definition of positive frequency between the two classes of observers and a strong entanglement between degrees of freedom in the left and right Rindler wedges. We revisit, in the context of a free scalar Klein-Gordon field, the problem of quantification of the correlations between an inertial observer Alice and left/right Rindler observes Rob/AntiRob. We emphasize the analysis of inf…
A classical non-signalling (or causal) box is an operation on classical bipartite input with classical bipartite output such that no signal can be sent from a party to the other through the use of the box. The quantum counterpart of such boxes, i.e. completely positive trace-preserving maps on bipartite states, though studied in literature, have been investigated less intensively than classical boxes. We present here some results and remarks about such maps. In particular, we analyze: the relations among properties as causality, non-locality and entanglement; the connection between causal and …
We show a lower bound on expected communication cost of interactive entanglement assisted quantum state redistribution protocols and a slightly better lower bound for its special case, quantum state transfer. Our bound implies that the expected communication cost of interactive protocols is not significantly better than worst case communication cost, in terms of scaling of error. Furthermore, the bound is independent of the number of rounds. This is in contrast with the classical case, where protocols with expected communication cost significantly better than worst case communication cost are …
State redistribution is the protocol in which, given an arbitrary tripartite quantum state, with two of the subsystems initially being with Alice and one being with Bob, the goal is for Alice to send one of her subsystems to Bob, possibly with the help of prior shared entanglement. We derive an upper bound on the second order asymptotic expansion for the quantum communication cost of achieving state redistribution with a given finite accuracy. In proving our result, we also obtain an upper bound on the quantum communication cost of this protocol in the one-shot setting, by using the protocol o…
We consider state redistribution of a "hybrid" information source that has both classical and quantum components. The sender transmits classical and quantum information at the same time to the receiver, in the presence of classical and quantum side information both at the sender and at the decoder. The available resources are shared entanglement, and noiseless classical and quantum communication channels. We derive one-shot direct and converse bounds for these three resources, represented in terms of the smooth conditional entropies of the source state. Various coding theorems for two-party so…

Nonlocality swapping of bipartite binary correlated boxes can be realized by a \emph{coupler} ($χ$) in nonsignaling models. By studying the swapping process we find that the previous bipartite coupler can be applied to the swapping of two multipartite boxes, and then generate a multipartite box with more users than that of any of the boxes before swapping. Here quantum bound still appears in the scheme. The bipartite coupler also can be applied to a hybrid scheme of generating a multipartite extremal box from many PR boxes. As the analogue of multipartite entanglement swapping, we generalize t…
We study the problem of entanglement-assisted quantum state redistribution in the one-shot setting and provide a new achievability result on the quantum communication required. Our bounds are in terms of the max-relative entropy and the hypothesis testing relative entropy. We use the techniques of convex split and position-based decoding to arrive at our result. We show that our result is upper bounded by the result obtained in Berta, Christandl, Touchette (2016).
We consider the problem of detecting entanglement and nonlocality in one-dimensional (1D) infinite, translation-invariant (TI) systems when just near-neighbor information is available. This issue is deeper than one might think a priori, since, as we show, there exist instances of local separable states (classical boxes) which admit only entangled (nonclassical) TI extensions. We provide a simple characterization of the set of local states of multiseparable TI spin chains and construct a family of linear witnesses which can detect entanglement in infinite TI states from the nearest-neighbor red…
We present a unified axiomatic approach to contextuality and non-locality based on the fact that both are resource theories. In those theories the main objects are consistent boxes, which can be transformed by certain operations to achieve certain tasks. The amount of resource is quantified by appropriate measures of the resource. Following recent paper [J.I. de Vicente, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. {\bf 47}, 424017 (2014)], and recent development of abstract approach to resource theories, such as entanglement theory, we propose axioms and welcome properties for operations and measures of resource…
We give trade-offs between classical communication, quantum communication, and entanglement for processing information in the Shannon-theoretic setting. We first prove a unit-resource capacity theorem that applies to the scenario where only the above three noiseless resources are available for consumption or generation. The optimal strategy mixes the three fundamental protocols of teleportation, super-dense coding, and entanglement distribution. We then provide an achievable rate region and a matching multi-letter converse for the direct static capacity theorem. This theorem applies to the sce…
We consider whether quantum coherence in the form of mutual entanglement between a pair of qubits is susceptible to decay that may be more rapid than the decay of the coherence of either qubit individually. An instance of potential importance for solid state quantum computing arises if embedded qubits (spins, quantum dots, Cooper pair boxes, etc.) are exposed to global and local noise at the same time. Here we allow separate phase-noisy channels to affect local and non-local measures of system coherence. We find that the time for decay of the qubit entanglement can be significantly shorter tha…
We report a fully quantum-dynamical study of the intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) in the electronic ground state of carbonyl sulfide (OCS), which is a prototype of an isolated many-body quantum system with strong internal couplings and non-Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) behavior. We pay particular attention to the role of many-body localization and the approach to thermalization, which currently are topics of considerable interest, as they pertain to the very foundations of statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. We employ local-mode (valence) coordinates and cons…
We present a classical probability model appropriate to the description of quantum randomness. This tool, that we have called stochastic gauge system, constitutes a contextual scheme in which the Kolmogorov probability space depends upon the experimental setup, in accordance with quantum mechanics. Therefore, the probability space behaves like a gauge parameter. We discuss the technical issues of this theory and apply the concept to classically emulate quantum entangled states and even `super-quantum' systems. We exhibit bipartite examples leading to maximum violation of Bell-CHSH inequalities…

In space-like separated experiments and other scenarios where multiple parties share a classical common cause but no cause-effect relations, quantum theory allows a variety of nonsignaling resources which are useful for distributed quantum information processing. These include quantum states, nonlocal boxes, steering assemblages, teleportages, channel steering assemblages, and so on. Such resources are often studied using nonlocal games, semiquantum games, entanglement-witnesses, teleportation experiments, and similar tasks. We introduce a unifying framework which subsumes the full range of no…
Inspired by its fundamental importance in quantum mechanics, we define and study the notion of entanglement for abstract physical theories, investigating its profound connection with the concept of superposition. We adopt the formalism of general probabilistic theories (GPTs), encompassing all physical models whose predictive power obeys minimal requirements. Examples include classical theories, which do not exhibit superposition and whose state space has the shape of a simplex, quantum mechanics, as well as more exotic models such as Popescu-Rohrlich boxes. We call two GPTs entangleable if th…
A central question in classical information theory is that of source compression, which is the task where Alice receives a sample from a known probability distribution and needs to transmit it to the receiver Bob with small error. This problem has a one-shot solution due to Huffman, in which the messages are of variable length and the expected length of the messages matches the asymptotic and i.i.d. compression rate of the Shannon entropy of the source. In this work, we consider a quantum extension of above task, where Alice receives a sample from a known probability distribution and needs to …
