We study the generation of defects when a quantum spin system is quenched through a multicritical point by changing a parameter of the Hamiltonian as $t/τ$, where $τ$ is the characteristic time scale of quenching. We argue that when a quantum system is quenched across a multicritical point, the density of defects ($n$) in the final state is not necessarily given by the Kibble-Zurek scaling form $n \sim 1/τ^{d ν/(z ν+1)}$, where $d$ is the spatial dimension, and $ν$ and $z$ are respectively the correlation length and dynamical exponent associated with the quantum critical point. We propose a generalized scaling form of the defect density given by $n \sim 1/τ^{d/(2z_2)}$, where the exponent $z_2$ determines the behavior of the off-diagonal term of the $2 \times 2$ Landau-Zener matrix at the multicritical point. This scaling is valid not only at a multicritical point but also at an ordinary critical point.
In this review, we study the quenching dynamics of a one-dimensional XY Hamiltonian in a transverse field under linear variation of different parameters of the Hamiltonian so that the system is driven through various critical points and gapless lines. It is observed that the density of defects falls off as a power law with the quenching rate $1/τ$ where the power law is determined by the dimensionality of the underlying lattice and the critical exponents associated with the quantum critical point as predicted by Kibble-Zurek scaling. However, we show that when the system is driven through a mu…
We study adiabatic quantum quenches across a quantum multicritical point (MCP) using a quenching scheme that enables the system to hit the MCP along different paths. We show that the power-law scaling of the defect density with the rate of driving depends non-trivially on the path, i.e., the exponent varies continuously with the parameter $α$ that defines the path, up to a critical value $α= α_c$; on the other hand for $α\geq α_c$, the scaling exponent saturates to a constant value. We show that dynamically generated and {\it path($α$)-dependent} effective critical exponents associated with th…
We use a new quenching scheme to study the dynamics of a one-dimensional anisotropic $XY$ spin-1/2 chain in the presence of a transverse field which alternates between the values $h+\de$ and $h-\de$ from site to site. In this quenching scheme, the parameter denoting the anisotropy of interaction ($\ga$) is linearly quenched from $-\infty$ to $ +\infty$ as $\ga = t/τ$, keeping the total strength of interaction $J$ fixed. The system traverses through a gapless phase when $\ga$ is quenched along the critical surface $h^2 = \de^2 + J^2$ in the parameter space spanned by $h$, $\de$ and $\ga$. By ma…
We study the behavior of the defect and heat densities under sudden quenching near the quantum critical points in the two-dimensional Kitaev honeycomb model both in the thermodynamic and non-thermodynamic limits. We consider quenches starting from a quantum critical point into the gapped as well as the gapless phases. We choose points on the lines of anisotropic quantum critical points as well as different points of intersection of these lines as the initial points from where the quenching starts. We find that the defect and heat densities display the expected power-law scalings along with log…
We report a study on the zero-temperature quantum discord as a measure of two-spin correlation of a transverse XY spin chain following a quench across a quantum critical point and investigate the behavior of mutual information, classical correlations and hence of discord in the final state as a function of the rate of quenching. We show that though discord vanishes in the limit of very slow as well as very fast quenching, it exhibits a peak for an intermediate value of the quenching rate. We show that though discord and also the mutual information exhibit a similar behavior with respect to the…
We study the quenching dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 $XY$ model in a transverse field when the transverse field $h(=t/τ)$ is quenched repeatedly between $-\infty$ and $+\infty$. A single passage from $h \to - \infty$ to $h \to +\infty$ or the other way around is referred to as a half-period of quenching. For an even number of half-periods, the transverse field is brought back to the initial value of $-\infty$; in the case of an odd number of half-periods, the dynamics is stopped at $h \to +\infty$. The density of defects produced due to the non-adiabatic transitions is calculated by m…
The non-equilibrium dynamics of an ion chain in a highly anisotropic trap is studied when the transverse trap frequency is quenched across the value at which the chain undergoes a continuous phase transition from a linear to a zigzag structure. Within Landau theory, an equation for the order parameter, corresponding to the transverse size of the zigzag structure, is determined when the vibrational motion is damped via laser cooling. The number of structural defects produced during a linear quench of the transverse trapping frequency is predicted and verified numerically. It is shown to obey th…
We present an exact result for the non-adiabatic transition probability and hence the defect density in the final state of a one-dimensional Kitaev model following a slow quench of the parameter $J_-$, which estimates the anisotropy between the interactions, as $J_-(t)\sim -|t/τ|$. Here, time $t$ goes from $-\infty$ to $+\infty$ and $τ$ defines the rate of change of the Hamiltonian. In other words, the spin chain initially prepared in its ground state is driven by changing $J_-$ linearly in time up to the quantum critical point, which in the model considered here occurs at at $t=0$, reversed a…
We show how deeply quenching a liquid to temperatures where it is linearly unstable and the crystal is the equilibrium phase often produces crystalline structures with defects and disorder. As the solid phase advances into the liquid phase, the modulations in the density distribution created behind the advancing solidification front do not necessarily have a wavelength that is the same as the equilibrium crystal lattice spacing. This is because in a deep enough quench the front propagation is governed by linear processes, but the crystal lattice spacing is determined by nonlinear terms. The wa…
We study scaling behavior of the geometric tensor $χ_{α,β}(λ_1,λ_2)$ and the fidelity susceptibility $(χ_{\rm F})$ in the vicinity of a quantum multicritical point (MCP) using the example of a transverse XY model. We show that the behavior of the geometric tensor (and thus of $χ_{\rm F}$) is drastically different from that seen near a critical point. In particular, we find that is highly non-monotonic function of $λ$ along the generic direction $λ_1\simλ_2 = λ$ when the system size $L$ is bounded between the shorter and longer correlation lengths characterizing the MCP: $1/|λ|^{ν_1}\ll L\ll 1/…
We employ quench dynamics as an effective tool to probe different universality classes of topological phase transitions. Specifically, we study a model encompassing both Dirac-like and nodal loop criticalities. Examining the Kibble-Zurek scaling of topological defect density, we discover that the scaling exponent is reduced in the presence of extended nodal loop gap closures. For a quench through a multicritical point, we also unveil a path-dependent crossover between two sets of critical exponents. Bloch state tomography finally reveals additional differences in the defect trajectories for su…
In this review, we study some aspects of the non-equilibrium dynamics of quantum systems. In particular, we consider the effect of varying a parameter in the Hamiltonian of a quantum system which takes it across a quantum critical point or line. We study both sudden and slow quenches in a variety of systems including one-dimensional ultracold atoms in an optical lattice, an infinite range ferromagnetic Ising model, and some exactly solvable spin models in one and two dimensions (such as the Kitaev model). We show that quenching leads to the formation of defects whose density has a power-law de…
We study the quantum dynamics of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 anisotropic XY model in a transverse field when the transverse field or the anisotropic interaction is quenched at a slow but uniform rate. The two quenching schemes are called transverse and anisotropic quenching respectively. Our emphasis in this paper is on the anisotropic quenching scheme and we compare the results with those of the other scheme. In the process of anisotropic quenching, the system crosses all the quantum critical lines of the phase diagram where the relaxation time diverges. The evolution is non-adiabatic in the t…
In the field of non-equilibrium phase transitions, the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) is undoubtedly an important discovery, pointing out that some universal scaling rules are applied to a wide range of physical systems from quantum to the cosmos in complex non-equilibrium continuous phase transitions. However, except for some scaling relations in specific cases, the algebraic-based KZM can not provide further details on the topological defect generation laws. In this work, we propose an analytical-based KZM that can accurately predict topological defect generation for a given quenching conditio…
We discuss the application of the adiabatic perturbation theory to analyze the dynamics in various systems in the limit of slow parametric changes of the Hamiltonian. We first consider a two-level system and give an elementary derivation of the asymptotics of the transition probability when the tuning parameter slowly changes in the finite range. Then we apply this perturbation theory to many-particle systems with low energy spectrum characterized by quasiparticle excitations. Within this approach we derive the scaling of various quantities such as the density of generated defects, entropy and…
We review quantum phase transitions of spin systems in transverse magnetic fields taking the examples of the spin-1/2 Ising and XY models in a transverse field. Beginning with an overview of quantum phase transitions, we introduce a number of model Hamiltonians. We provide exact solutions in one spatial dimension connecting them to conformal field theoretical studies. We also discuss Kitaev models and some other exactly solvable spin systems. Studies of quantum phase transitions in the presence of quenched randomness and with frustrating interactions are presented in detail. We discuss novel p…
It is well known that the dynamics of a quantum system is always non-adiabatic in passage through a quantum critical point and the defect density in the final state following a quench shows a power-law scaling with the rate of quenching. However, we propose here a possible situation where the dynamics of a quantum system in passage across quantum critical regions is adiabatic and the defect density decays exponentially. This is achieved by incorporating additional interactions which lead to quantum critical behavior and gapless phases but do not participate in the time evolution of the system.…
We review recent studies on the measures of zero temperature quantum correlations namely, the quantum entanglement (concurrence) and discord present in the final state of a transverse XY spin chain following a quench through quantum critical points; the aim of these studies is to explore the scaling of the above quantities as a function of the quench rate. A comparative study between the concurrence and the quantum discord shows that their behavior is qualitatively the same though there are quantitative differences. For the present model, the scaling of both the quantities are given by the sca…
We study the effects of interference on the quenching dynamics of a one-dimensional spin 1/2 $XY$ model in the presence of a transverse field ($h(t)$) which varies sinusoidally with time as $h = h_0\cos{ωt}$, with $|t| \leq t_f = π/ω$. We also consider the situation where the magnetic field consists of an oscillatory as well as a linearly varying component, i.e., $h(t) = h_0\cos{ωt} + t/τ$. Our purpose is to estimate the defect density and the local entropy density in the final state if the system is initially prepared in its ground state. For a single crossing through the quantum critical poi…
