In this paper we investigate the achievable rate of LOS MIMO systems that use 1-bit quantization and spatial oversampling at the receiver. We propose that by using additional antennas at the receiver, the loss incurred due to the strong limitation of the quantization can be decreased. Mutual information results show that considerable rate gains can be achieved depending on the number and arrangement of the antennas. In some of the cases, even the full available rate from the transmitter can be attained. Furthermore, the results also reveal that two-dimensional antenna arrays can benefit more f…
This letter considers simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) for a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay system. The relay is powered by harvesting energy from the source via time switching (TS) and utilizes the harvested energy to forward the information signal. Our aim is to maximize the rate of the system subject to the power constraints at both the source and relay nodes. In the first scenario in which the source covariance matrix is an identity matrix, we present the joint-optimal solution for relaying and the TS ratio in closed form. An iterative scheme is the…
Imperfect channel state information degrades the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications; its effect on single-user (SU) and multi-user (MU) MIMO transmissions are quite different. In particular, MU-MIMO suffers from residual inter-user interference due to imperfect channel state information while SU-MIMO only suffers from a power loss. This paper compares the throughput loss of both SU and MU MIMO on the downlink due to delay and channel quantization. Accurate closed-form approximations are derived for the achievable rates for both SU and MU MIMO. It is shown that …
This paper addresses joint transceiver and relay design for a wireless multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) switching scheme that enables data exchange among multiple users. Here, a multi-antenna relay linearly precodes the received (uplink) signals from multiple users before forwarding the signal in the downlink, where the purpose of precoding is to let each user receive its desired signal with interference from other users suppressed. The problem of optimizing the precoder based on various design criteria is typically non-convex and difficult to solve. The main contribution of this paper is…
This paper studies the optimal bit allocation for shape-gain vector quantization of wireless channels in multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlink systems based on linear precoding. Our design minimizes the mean squared-error between the original and quantized channels through optimal bit allocation across shape (direction) and gain (magnitude) for a fixed feedback overhead per user. This is shown to significantly reduce the quantization error, which in turn, decreases the MU interference. This paper makes three main contributions: first, we focus on channel gain quantizati…
This paper proposes a codebook for jointly quantizing channel direction information (CDI) of spatially correlated three-dimensional (3D) multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) channels. To reduce the dimension for quantizing the CDI of large antenna arrays, we introduce a special structure to the codewords by using Tucker decomposition to exploit the unique features of 3D MIMO channels. Specifically, the codeword consists of four parts each with low dimension individually targeting at a different type of information: statistical CDIs in horizontal direction and in vertical direction, statistical powe…
The high hardware complexity of a massive MIMO base station, which requires hundreds of radio chains, makes it challenging to build commercially. One way to reduce the hardware complexity and power consumption of the receiver is to lower the resolution of the analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). We derive an achievable rate for a massive MIMO system with arbitrary quantization and use this rate to show that ADCs with as low as 3 bits can be used without significant performance loss at spectral efficiencies around 3.5 bpcu per user, also under interference from stronger transmitters and with so…
In this paper, we investigate the quantization and the feedback of downlink spatial covariance matrix for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with cascaded precoding. Massive MIMO has gained a lot of attention recently because of its ability to significantly improve the network performance. To reduce the overhead of downlink channel estimation and uplink feedback in frequency-division duplex massive MIMO systems, cascaded precoding has been proposed, where the outer precoder is implemented using traditional limited feedback while the inner precoder is determined by the spatia…
The recently proposed Cell-Free massive MIMO architecture is studied for the uplink. In contrast to most previous works, joint detection is performed using global CSI. Therefore, we study strategies for transferring CSI to the CPU taking into account the fronthaul capacity which limits CSI quantization. Two strategies for pilot-based CSI acquisition are considered: estimate-and-quantize and quantize-and-estimate. These are analysed using the Bussgang decomposition. For a given quantization constraint for the data and CSI the achievable rate per user with Zero-Forcing is determined. Numerical r…
MIMO systems are considered as most promising for wireless communications. However, with an increasing number of radio front ends the corresponding energy consumption and costs become an issue, which can be relieved by the utilization of low-resolution quantizers. In this study we propose an optimal precoding algorithm constrained to constant envelope signals and phase quantization that maximizes the minimum distance to the decision threshold at the receivers using a branch-and-bound strategy. The proposed algorithm is superior to the existing methods in terms of bit error rate. Numerical resu…
In frequency division duplex (FDD) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communications, limited channel state information (CSI) feedback is a central tool to support advanced single- and multi-user MIMO beamforming/precoding. To achieve a given CSI quality, the CSI quantization codebook size has to grow exponentially with the number of antennas, leading to quantization complexity, as well as, feedback overhead issues for larger MIMO systems. We have recently proposed a multi-stage recursive Grassmannian quantizer that enables a significant complexity reduction of CSI quantization. In…
We propose a novel linear minimum-mean-squared-error (MMSE) precoder design for a downlink (DL) massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) scenario. For economical and computational efficiency reasons low resolution 1-bit digital-to-analog (DAC) and analog-to-digital (ADC) converters are used. This comes at the cost of performance gain that can be recovered by the large number of antennas deployed at the base station (BS) and an appropiate precoder design to mitigate the distortions due to the coarse quantization. The proposed precoder takes the quantization non-linearities into account and…
We consider the problem of channel estimation for uplink multiuser massive MIMO systems, where, in order to significantly reduce the hardware cost and power consumption, one-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) are used at the base station (BS) to quantize the received signal. Channel estimation for one-bit massive MIMO systems is challenging due to the severe distortion caused by the coarse quantization. It was shown in previous studies that an extremely long training sequence is required to attain an acceptable performance. In this paper, we study the problem of optimal one-bit quantizati…
The capacity of a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) channel in which the antenna outputs are processed by an analog linear combining network and quantized by a set of threshold quantizers is studied. The linear combining weights and quantization thresholds are selected from a set of possible configurations as a function of the channel matrix. The possible configurations of the combining network model specific analog receiver architectures, such as single antenna selection, sign quantization of the antenna outputs or linear processing of the outputs. An interesting connection between the ca…
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are required to communicate reliably at high spectral bands using a large number of antennas, while operating under strict power and cost constraints. In order to meet these constraints, future MIMO receivers are expected to operate with low resolution quantizers, namely, utilize a limited number of bits for representing their observed measurements, inherently distorting the digital representation of the acquired signals. The fact that MIMO receivers use their measurements for some task, such as symbol detection and channel estimation, other than r…
One of the basic aspects of Massive MIMO (MaMi) that is in the focus of current investigations is its potential of using low-cost and energy-efficient hardware. It is often claimed that MaMi will allow for using analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with very low resolutions and that this will result in overall improvement of energy efficiency. In this contribution, we perform a parametric energy efficiency analysis of MaMi uplink for the entire base station receiver system with varying ADC resolutions. The analysis shows that, for a wide variety of system parameters, ADCs with intermediate bit …
The capacity of a discrete-time multi-input multi-output (MIMO) Gaussian channel with output quantization is investigated for different receiver architectures. A general formulation of this problem is proposed in which the antenna outputs are processed by analog combiners while sign quantizers are used for analog-to-digital conversion. To exemplify this approach, four analog receiver architectures of varying generality and complexity are considered: (a) multiple antenna selection and sign quantization of the antenna outputs, (b) single antenna selection and multilevel quantization, (c) multipl…
In this paper, we propose adaptive techniques for multi-user multiple input and multiple output~(MU-MIMO) cellular communication systems, to solve the problem of energy efficient communications with heterogeneous delay-aware traffic. In order to minimize the total transmission power of the MU-MIMO, we investigate the relationship between the transmission power and the M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation~(MQAM) constellation size and get the energy efficient modulation for each transmission stream based on the minimum mean square error~(MMSE) receiver.Since the total power consumption is diff…
This paper analyzes the performance of multicell massive multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) systems with variable-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). In such an architecture, each ADC uses arbitrary quantization resolution to save power and hardware cost. Along this direction, we first introduce a quantization-aware channel estimator based on additive quantization noise model (AQNM) and linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) estimate theory. Afterwards, by leveraging on the estimated channel state information (CSI), we derive the asymptotic expressions of achievable uplin…
This paper considers multiaccess multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with finite rate feedback. The goal is to understand how to efficiently employ the given finite feedback resource to maximize the sum rate by characterizing the performance analytically. Towards this, we propose a joint quantization and feedback strategy: the base station selects the strongest users, jointly quantizes their strongest eigen-channel vectors and broadcasts a common feedback to all the users. This joint strategy is different from an individual strategy, in which quantization and feedback are performed a…
In a generic switching problem, a switching pattern consists of a one-to-one mapping from a set of inputs to a set of outputs (i.e., a permutation). We propose and investigate a wireless switching framework in which a multi-antenna relay is responsible for switching traffic among a set of $N$ stations. We refer to such a relay as a MIMO switch. With beamforming and linear detection, the MIMO switch controls which stations are connected to which stations. Each beamforming matrix realizes a permutation pattern among the stations. We refer to the corresponding permutation matrix as a switch matri…
In this paper, we focus on the design of the hybrid analog/digital precoding in millimeter wave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. To reduce the feedback overhead, we propose two non-uniform quantization (NUQ) codebook based hybrid precoding schemes for two main hybrid precoding implementations, i.e., the full-connected structure and the sub-connected structure. Specifically, we firstly group the angles of the arrive/departure (AOAs/AODs) of the scattering paths into several spatial lobes by exploiting the sparseness property of the millimeter wave in the angular domain, which divi…
We consider cooperative radio access network architectures, especially distributed massive MIMO and Cloud RAN, considering their similarities and differences. We address in particular the major challenge posed to both by the implementation of a high capacity fronthaul network to link the distributed access points to the central processing unit, and consider the effect on uplink performance of quantization of received signals in order to limit fronthaul load. We use the Bussgang decomposition along with a new approach to MMSE estimation of both channel and data to provide the basis of our analy…

Coarse quantization at the base station (BS) of a massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless system promises significant power and cost savings. Coarse quantization also enables significant reductions of the raw analog-to-digital converter (ADC) data that must be transferred from a spatially-separated antenna array to the baseband processing unit. The theoretical limits as well as practical transceiver algorithms for such quantized MU-MIMO systems operating over frequency-flat, narrowband channels have been studied extensively. However, the practically relevant scen…
Accurate channel state information (CSI) is essential for attaining beamforming gains in single-user (SU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and multiplexing gains in multi-user (MU) MIMO wireless communication systems. State-of-the-art limited feedback schemes, which rely on pre-defined codebooks for channel quantization, are only appropriate for a small number of transmit antennas and low feedback overhead. In order to scale informed transmitter schemes to emerging massive MIMO systems with a large number of transmit antennas at the base station, one common approach is to employ time divi…

This paper considers the quantization problem on the Grassmann manifold with dimension n and p. The unique contribution is the derivation of a closed-form formula for the volume of a metric ball in the Grassmann manifold when the radius is sufficiently small. This volume formula holds for Grassmann manifolds with arbitrary dimension n and p, while previous results are only valid for either p=1 or a fixed p with asymptotically large n. Based on the volume formula, the Gilbert-Varshamov and Hamming bounds for sphere packings are obtained. Assuming a uniformly distributed source and a distortion …
Quantized massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems are gaining more interest due to their power efficiency. We present a new precoding technique to mitigate the multi-user interference and the quantization distortions in a downlink multi-user (MU) multiple-input-single-output (MISO) system with 1-bit quantization at the transmitter. This work is restricted to PSK modulation schemes. The transmit signal vector is optimized for every desired received vector taking into account the 1-bit quantization. The optimization is based on maximizing the safety margin to the decision threshold…
One of the first widespread uses of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) is in 5G networks, where each base station has an advanced antenna system (AAS) that is connected to the baseband unit (BBU) with a capacity-constrained fronthaul. In the AAS configuration, multiple passive antenna elements and radio units are integrated into a single box. This paper considers precoded downlink transmission over a single-cell MU-MIMO system. We study optimized linear precoding for AAS with a limited-capacity fronthaul, which requires the precoding matrix to be quantized. We propose a new pr…
In this paper, we investigate joint antenna selection and spatial switching (SS) for quality-of-service (QoS)-constrained energy efficiency (EE) optimization in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system. A practical linear power model taking into account the entire transmit-receive chain is accordingly utilized. The corresponding fractional-combinatorial and non-convex EE problem, involving joint optimization of eigen-channel assignment, power allocation, and active receive antenna set selection, subject to satisfying minimum su…
This paper addresses channel estimation and data equalization on frequency-selective 1-bit quantized Multiple Input-Multiple Output (MIMO) systems. No joint processing or Channel State Information is assumed at the transmitter, and therefore our findings are also applicable to the uplink of Multi-User MIMO systems. System models for both Orthogonal Division Frequency Multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier schemes are developed. A Cramér-Rao Lower Bound for the estimation problems is derived. The two nonlinear algorithms Expectation Maximization (EM) and Generalized Approximate Message Passing …

In this paper, we investigate the problem of optimal base station (BS) ON-OFF switching and user association in a heterogeneous network (HetNet) with massive MIMO, with the objective to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE). The joint BS ON-OFF switching and user association problem is formulated as an integer programming problem. We first develop a centralized scheme, in which we relax the integer constraints and employ a series of Lagrangian dual methods that transform the original problem into a standard linear programming (LP) problem. Due to the special structure of the LP, we prove …
We develop a direction of arrival (DoA) and channel estimation algorithm for the one-bit quantized millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. By formulating the estimation problem as a noisy one-bit compressed sensing problem, we propose a computationally efficient gridless solution based on the expectation-maximization generalized approximate message passing (EMGAMP) approach. The proposed algorithm does not need the prior knowledge about the number of DoAs and outperforms the existing methods in distinguishing extremely close DoAs for the case of one-bit q…
In massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, the user equipment (UE) needs to feed the channel state information (CSI) back to the base station (BS) for the following beamforming. But the large scale of antennas in massive MIMO systems causes huge feedback overhead. Deep learning (DL) based methods can compress the CSI at the UE and recover it at the BS, which reduces the feedback cost significantly. But the compressed CSI must be quantized into bit streams for transmission. In this paper, we propose an adaptor-assisted quantization strategy for bit-level DL-based CSI feedback. Fi…
It is of great interest to develop efficient ways to acquire accurate channel state information (CSI) for frequency division duplexing (FDD) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems for backward compatibility. It is theoretically well known that the codebook size for CSI quantization should be increased as the number of transmit antennas becomes larger, and 3GPP long term evolution (LTE) and LTE-Advanced codebooks also follow this trend. Thus, in massive MIMO, it is hard to apply the conventional approach of using pre-defined vector-quantized codebooks for CSI quantization mainly …
Multiple-antenna systems is a key technique to serve multiple users in future wireless systems. For low energy consumption and hardware complexity we first consider transmit symbols with constant magnitude and then 1-bit digital-to-analog converters. We propose precoding designs which maximize the minimum distance to the decision threshold at the receiver. The precoding design with 1-bit DAC corresponds to a discrete optimization problem, which we solve exactly with a branch-and-bound strategy. We alternatively present an approximation based on relaxation. Our results show that the proposed br…
In this paper, we investigate network-assisted full-duplex (NAFD) cell-free millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with digital-to-analog converter (DAC) quantization and fronthaul compression. We propose to maximize the weighted uplink and downlink sum rate by jointly optimizing the power allocation of both the transmitting remote antenna units (T-RAUs) and uplink users and the variances of the downlink and uplink fronthaul compression noises. To deal with this challenging problem, we further apply a successive convex approximation (SCA) method to handl…
We consider high-dimensional MIMO transmissions in frequency division duplexing (FDD) systems. For precoding, the frequency selective channel has to be measured, quantized and fed back to the base station by the users. When the number of antennas is very high this typically leads to prohibitively high quantization complexity and large feedback. In 5G New Radio (NR), a modular quantization approach has been applied for this, where first a low-dimensional subspace is identified for the whole frequency selective channel, and then subband channels are linearly mapped to this subspace and quantized…
This paper considers the quantization problem on the Grassmann manifold \mathcal{G}_{n,p}, the set of all p-dimensional planes (through the origin) in the n-dimensional Euclidean space. The chief result is a closed-form formula for the volume of a metric ball in the Grassmann manifold when the radius is sufficiently small. This volume formula holds for Grassmann manifolds with arbitrary dimension n and p, while previous results pertained only to p=1, or a fixed p with asymptotically large n. Based on this result, several quantization bounds are derived for sphere packing and rate distortion tr…

Cell-free Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is considered, where distributed access points (APs) multiply the received signal by the conjugate of the estimated channel, and send back a quantized version of this weighted signal to a central processing unit (CPU). For the first time, we present a performance comparison between the case of perfect fronthaul links, the case when the quantized version of the estimated channel and the quantized signal are available at the CPU, and the case when only the quantized weighted signal is available at the CPU. The Bussgang decomposition is used…
A wireless relay with multiple antennas is called a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) switch if it maps its input links to its output links using "precode-and-forward." Namely, the MIMO switch precodes the received signal vector in the uplink using some matrix for transmission in the downlink. This paper studies the scenario of $K$ stations and a MIMO switch, which has full channel state information. The precoder at the MIMO switch is either a zero-forcing matrix or a network-coded matrix. With the zero-forcing precoder, each destination station receives only its desired signal with enhanc…
Channel state feedback schemes for the MIMO broadcast downlink have been widely studied in the frequency-flat case. This work focuses on the more relevant frequency selective case, where some important new aspects emerge. We consider a MIMO-OFDM broadcast channel and compare achievable ergodic rates under three channel state feedback schemes: analog feedback, direction quantized feedback and "time-domain" channel quantized feedback. The first two schemes are direct extensions of previously proposed schemes. The third scheme is novel, and it is directly inspired by rate-distortion theory of Gau…

Massive MIMO wireless FDD systems are often confronted by the challenge to efficiently obtain downlink channel state information (CSI). Previous works have demonstrated the potential in CSI encoding and recovery by take advantage of uplink/downlink reciprocity between their CSI magnitudes. However, such a framework separately encodes CSI phase and magnitude. To improve CSI encoding, we propose a learning-based framework based on limited CSI feedback and magnitude-aided information. Moving beyond previous works, our proposed framework with a modified loss function enables end-to-end learning to…

Millimeter wave systems suffer from high power consumption and are constrained to use low resolution quantizers --digital to analog and analog to digital converters (DACs and ADCs). However, low resolution quantization leads to reduced data rate and increased out-of-band emission noise. In this paper, a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with linear transceivers using low resolution DACs and ADCs is considered. An information-theoretic analysis of the system to model the effect of quantization on spectrospatial power distribution and capacity of the system is provided. More precisely…
This paper focuses on the design of beamforming codebooks that maximize the average normalized beamforming gain for any underlying channel distribution. While the existing techniques use statistical channel models, we utilize a model-free data-driven approach with foundations in machine learning to generate beamforming codebooks that adapt to the surrounding propagation conditions. The key technical contribution lies in reducing the codebook design problem to an unsupervised clustering problem on a Grassmann manifold where the cluster centroids form the finite-sized beamforming codebook for th…
In this paper, the zero-forcing (ZF) precoder with max-min power allocation is proposed for cell-free millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems using low-resolution digital-to-analog converters (DACs) with limited-capacity fronthaul links. The proposed power allocation aims to achieve max-min fairness on the achievable rate lower bounds of the users obtained by the additive quantization noise model (AQNM), which mimics the effect of low-resolution DACs. To solve the max-min power allocation problem, an alternating optimization (AO) method is proposed, which…
A simple channel state information (CSI) feedback scheme is proposed for interference alignment (IA) over the K-user constant Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output Interference Channel (MIMO IC). The proposed technique relies on the identification of invariants in the IA equations, which enables the reformulation of the CSI quantization problem as a single quantization on the Grassmann manifold at each receiver. The scaling of the number of feedback bits with the transmit power sufficient to preserve the multiplexing gain that can be achieved under perfect CSI is established. We show that the CSI fee…
In this paper, we consider the downlink (DL) of a zero-forcing (ZF) precoded extra-large scale massive MIMO (XL-MIMO) system. The base-station (BS) operates with limited number of radio-frequency (RF) transceivers due to high cost, power consumption and interconnection bandwidth associated to the fully digital implementation. The BS, which is implemented with a subarray switching architecture, selects groups of active antennas inside each subarray to transmit the DL signal. This work proposes efficient resource allocation (RA) procedures to perform joint antenna selection (AS) and power alloca…
In this paper, we reveal that artificial neural network (ANN) assisted multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signal detection can be modeled as ANN-assisted lossy vector quantization (VQ), named MIMO-VQ, which is basically a joint statistical channel quantization and signal quantization procedure. It is found that the quantization loss increases linearly with the number of transmit antennas, and thus MIMO-VQ scales poorly with the size of MIMO. Motivated by this finding, we propose a novel modular neural network based approach, termed MNNet, where the whole network is formed by a set of pre-de…
Quantized channel state information (CSI) plays a critical role in precoding design which helps reap the merits of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology. In order to reduce the overhead of CSI feedback, we propose a deep learning based CSI quantization method by developing a joint convolutional residual network (JCResNet) which benefits MIMO channel feature extraction and recovery from the perspective of bit-level quantization performance. Experiments show that our proposed method substantially improves the performance.
We consider the problem of secure communications in a MIMO setting in the presence of an adversarial jammer equipped with $n_j$ transmit antennas and an eavesdropper equipped with $n_e$ receive antennas. A multiantenna transmitter, equipped with $n_t$ antennas, desires to secretly communicate a message to a multiantenna receiver equipped with $n_r$ antennas. We propose a transmission method based on artificial noise and linear precoding and a two-stage receiver method employing beamforming. Under this strategy, we first characterize the achievable secrecy rates of communication and prove that …
In this paper, we consider a general multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with channel state information (CSI) feedback over time-correlated Rayleigh block-fading channels. Specifically, we first derive the closed-form expression of the minimum differential feedback rate to achieve the maximum erdodic capacity in the presence of channel estimation errors and quantization distortion at the receiver. With the feedback-channel transmission rate constraint, in the periodic feedback system, we further investigate the relationship of the ergodic capacity and the differential feedback interva…
