We revisit conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) from the perspective of sine-square deformation (SSD) and the entanglement Hamiltonian. The operators that correspond to SSD and the entanglement Hamiltonian are identified. Thus, the nature of SSD and entanglement can be discussed in a much simpler CQM setting than higher-dimensional field theories.
Different aspects of the connection between the Bessel process and the conformal quantum mechanics (CQM) are discussed. The meaning of the possible generalizations of both models is investigated with respect to the other model, including self adjoint extension of the CQM. Some other generalizations such as the Bessel process in the wide sense and radial Ornstein- Uhlenbeck process are discussed with respect to the underlying conformal group structure.
We present a generally covariant formulation of conformal higher-order viscoelastic fluid mechanics with strain allowed to take arbitrarily large values. We give a general prescription to determine the dynamics of a relativistic viscoelastic fluid in a way consistent with the hypothesis of local thermodynamic equilibrium and the second law of thermodynamics. We then elaborately study the transient time scales at which the strain almost relaxes and becomes proportional to the gradients of velocity. We particularly show that a conformal second-order fluid with all possible parameters in the cons…
In quantum statistical mechanics, closed many-body systems that do not exhibit thermalization after an arbitrarily long time in spite of the presence of interactions are called as many-body localized systems, and recently have been vigorously investigated. After a brief review of this topic, we consider a many-body interacting quantum system in one dimension, which has conformal symmetry and integrability. We exactly solve the system and discuss its thermal or non-thermal behavior.
In this talk I will describe the deep influence Planck had on the development of statistical mechanics. At this end I will first outline the theoretical situation of statistical mechanics before Planck. I will then describe his main contributions to this field and the progresses obtained as an immediate consequence of his work. I will also outline the later evolution of statistical mechanics in relation with Planck's work. I will finally report on a still unsolved problem in statistical mechanics, historically related to the properties of black-body radiation.
We consider critical curves -- conformally invariant curves that appear at critical points of two-dimensional statistical mechanical systems. We show how to describe these curves in terms of the Coulomb gas formalism of conformal field theory (CFT). We also provide links between this description and the stochastic (Schramm-) Loewner evolution (SLE). The connection appears in the long-time limit of stochastic evolution of various SLE observables related to CFT primary fields. We show how the multifractal spectrum of harmonic measure and other fractal characteristics of critical curves can be ob…
Mathematical aspects of the theory of interfaces in statistical mechanics are discussed.
A brief review on the dynamical systems approach to nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and chaotic dynamics
An introductory review of Classical Statistical Mechanics
These lectures were prepared for the 2014 PCMI graduate summer school and were designed to be a lightweight introduction to statistical mechanics for mathematicians. The applications feature some of the themes of the summer school: sphere packings and tilings.
Through the H theorem, Bolzmann attempted to validate the foundations of statistical mechanics. However, it is incompatible with the fundamental laws of mechanics because its deduction requires the introduction of probability. In this paper we attempt a justification of statistical mechanics without deviating from the existing framework of quantum mechanics. We point out that the principle of equal a priori probabilities is easily proven in the dual space. The dual of the space of the quantum states is the space of the observations. We then prove that time evolution of the operators of observa…
The framework of non-extensive statistical mechanics, proposed by Tsallis, has been used to describe a variety of systems. The non-extensive statistical mechanics is usually introduced in a formal way, using the maximization of entropy. In this article we investigate the canonical ensemble in the non-extensive statistical mechanics using a more traditional way, by considering a small system interacting with a large reservoir via short-range forces. The reservoir is characterized by generalized entropy instead of the Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy. Assuming equal probabilities for all available micros…
This is an extensive review of recent work on the foundations of statistical mechanics. Subject matters discussed include: interpretation of probability, typicality, recurrence, reversibility, ergodicity, mixing, coarse graining, past hypothesis, reductionism, phase average, thermodynamic limit, interventionism, entropy.
An analogy is developed between the breaking of space-inversion symmetry in equilibrium statistical mechanics and the breaking of time-reversal symmetry in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics. In this way, similar relationships characterizing fluctuations are obtained in both contexts.
In this short note we collect together known results on the use of Random Matrix Theory in lattice statistical mechanics. The purpose here is two fold. Firstly the RMT analysis provides an intrinsic characterization of integrability, and secondly it appears to be an effective tool to find new integrable models. Various examples from quantum and classical statistical mechanics are presented.
Statistical mechanics is generalized on the basis of an information theory for inexact or incomplete probability distributions. A parameterized normalization is proposed and leads to a nonextensive entropy. The resulting incomplete statistical mechanics is proved to have the same theoretical characteristics as Tsallis one based on the conventional normalization.
Given are a first principles derivation and formulation of the probabilistic concepts that underly equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics. The transition to non-equilibrium probability is traversed briefly.
We present a concise derivation of Landauer's erasure principle from the postulates of statistical mechanics, along with a small number of additional but uncontroversial axioms.
This article is a brief Retrospective on the life and work of Robert W. Zwanzig, who formulated nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and who passed away in May of this year.
In this paper, we investigate DNA denaturation through Statistical Mechanics and show that exceptional polynomials lead to DNA mutation. We consider a DNA model with two chains connected by Morse potential representing the H bonds, and then we calculate the partition function for this model. The partition function is converted into a Schrödinger like an equation. We exploit the techniques of SUSY quantum mechanics to model DNA mutation. We also compute the thermal denaturation of DNA for each mutated state.
We study statistical properties of turbulent inverse cascades in a class of nonlinear models describing a scalar field transported by a two-dimensional incompressible flow. The class is characterized by a linear relation between the transported field and the velocity, and include several cases of physical interest, such as Navier-Stokes, surface quasi-geostrophic and Charney-Hasegawa-Mima equations. We find that some statistical properties of the inverse turbulent cascades in such systems are conformal invariant. In particular, the zero-isolines of the scalar field are statistically equivalent…
Large-scale astrophysical systems are non-extensive due to their long-range force of gravity. Here we show an approach toward the statistical mechanics of such self-gravitating systems (SGS). This is a generalization of the standard statistical mechanics based on the new definition of entropy; Tsallis statistical mechanics. Developing the composition of entropy and the generalized Euler relation, we investigate the galaxy distributions in count-in-cell method. This is applied to the data of CfA II South redshift survey.
