we will present an estimation for the upper-bound of the amount of 16-bytes plaintexts for English texts, which indicates that the block ciphers with block length no more than 16-bytes will be subject to recover plaintext attacks in the occasions of plaintext -known or plaintext-chosen attacks.
In this paper, a variant of the Hill cipher is proposed. In the classical Hill cipher, an invertible matrix is used for encryption but the scheme is vulnerable to the known-plaintext attack which can reveal the matrix. In our proposed cryptosystem, each plaintext block is encrypted by a new invertible key matrix that thwarts the known-plaintext attack. To generate the invertible matrices which serve as the dynamic keys we make use of the vector spaces, randomly generated basis and non-singular linear transformation. Resulting cipher is secure against the known-plaintext attack.
Recently, an image scrambling encryption algorithm of pixel bit based on chaos map was proposed. Considering the algorithm as a typical binary image scrambling/permutation algorithm exerting on plaintext of size $M\times (8N)$, this paper proposes a novel optimal method to break it with some known/chosen-plaintexts. The spatial complexity and computational complexity of the attack are only $O(32\cdot MN)$ and $O(16\cdot n_0\cdot MN)$ respectively, where $n_0$ is the number of known/chosen-plaintexts used. The method can be easily extended to break any permutation-only encryption scheme exertin…
Recently, an image encryption algorithm based on scrambling and Vegin`ere cipher has been proposed. However, it was soon cryptanalyzed by Zhang et al. using a combination of chosen-plaintext attack and differential attack. This paper briefly reviews the two attack methods proposed by Zhang et al. and outlines the mathematical interpretations of them. Based on their work, we present an improved chosen-plaintext attack to further reduce the number of chosen-plaintexts required, which is proved to be optimal. Moreover, it is found that an elaborately designed known-plaintex attack can efficiently…
In ISNN'04, a novel symmetric cipher was proposed, by combining a chaotic signal and a clipped neural network (CNN) for encryption. The present paper analyzes the security of this chaotic cipher against chosen-plaintext attacks, and points out that this cipher can be broken by a chosen-plaintext attack. Experimental analyses are given to support the feasibility of the proposed attack.
Privacy is one of the key issues addressed by information Security. Through cryptographic encryption methods, one can prevent a third party from understanding transmitted raw data over unsecured channel during signal transmission. The cryptographic methods for enhancing the security of digital contents have gained high significance in the current era. Breach of security and misuse of confidential information that has been intercepted by unauthorized parties are key problems that information security tries to solve. This paper sets out to contribute to the general body of knowledge in the area …
In many previous works, a single-pixel imaging (SPI) system is constructed as an optical image encryption system. Unauthorized users are not able to reconstruct the plaintext image from the ciphertext intensity sequence without knowing the illumination pattern key. However, little cryptanalysis about encrypted SPI has been investigated in the past. In this work, we propose a known-plaintext attack scheme and a ciphertext-only attack scheme to an encrypted SPI system for the first time. The known-plaintext attack is implemented by interchanging the roles of illumination patterns and object imag…

The Hill Cipher is a classical symmetric cipher which breaks plaintext into blocks of size m and then multiplies each block by an m by m key matrix to yield ciphertext. However, it is well known that the Hill cipher succumbs to cryptanalysis relatively easily. As a result, there have been efforts to strengthen the cipher through the use of various techniques e.g. permuting rows and columns of the key matrix to encrypt each plaintext vector with a new key matrix. In this paper, we strengthen the security of the Hill cipher against a known-plaintext attack by encrypting each plaintext matrix by …
Vigenere Cipher is one of the classic cryptographic algorithms and included into symmetric key cryptography algorithm, where to encryption and decryption process use the same key. Vigenere Cipher has the disadvantage that if key length is not equal to the length of the plaintext, then the key will be repeated until equal to the plaintext length, it course allows cryptanalysts to make the process of cryptanalysis. And weaknesses of the symmetric key cryptographic algorithm is the safety of key distribution factor, if the key is known by others, then the function of cryptography itself become us…
We propose a cipher similar to the One Time Pad and McEliece cipher based on a subband coding scheme. The encoding process is an approximation to the One Time Pad encryption scheme. We present results of numerical experiments which suggest that a brute force attack to the proposed scheme does not result in all possible plaintexts, as the One Time Pad does, but still the brute force attack does not compromise the system. However, we demonstrate that the cipher is vulnerable to a chosen-plaintext attack.
BEAR, LION and LIONESS are block ciphers presented by Biham and Anderson (1996), inspired by the famous Luby-Rackoff constructions of block ciphers from other cryptographic primitives (1988). The ciphers proposed by Biham and Anderson are based on one stream cipher and one hash function. Good properties of the primitives ensure good properties of the block cipher. In particular, they are able to prove that their ciphers are immune to any efficient known-plaintext key-recovery attack that can use as input only one plaintext-ciphertext pair. Our contribution is showing that these ciphers are act…
Since the first appearance in Fridrich's design, the usage of permutation-diffusion structure for designing digital image cryptosystem has been receiving increasing research attention in the field of chaos-based cryptography. Recently, a novel chaotic Image Cipher using one round Modified Permutation-Diffusion pattern (ICMPD) was proposed. Unlike traditional permutation-diffusion structure, the permutation is operated on bit level instead of pixel level and the diffusion is operated on masked pixels, which are obtained by carrying out the classical affine cipher, instead of plain pixels in ICM…
This paper constructs two encryption methods using 2-D chaotic maps, Duffings and Arnold's cat maps respectively. Both of the methods are designed using message embedded scheme and are analyzed for their validity, for plaintext sensitivity, key sensitivity, known plaintext and brute-force attacks. Due to the less key space generally many chaotic cryptosystem developed are found to be weak against Brute force attack which is an essential issue to be solved. For this issue, concept of identifiability proved to be a necessary condition to be fulfilled by the designed chaotic cipher to resist brut…
The block cipher KASUMI is widely used for security in many synchronous wireless standards. It was proposed by ETSI SAGE for usage in 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) ciphering algorthms in 2001. There are a great deal of cryptanalytic results on KASUMI, however, its security evaluation against the recent zero-correlation linear attacks is still lacking so far. In this paper, we select some special input masks to refine the general 5-round zero-correlation linear approximations combining with some observations on the $FL$ functions and then propose the 6-round zero-correlation linear …
This paper introduces Freestyle, a randomized and variable round version of the ChaCha cipher. Freestyle uses the concept of hash based halting condition where a decryption attempt with an incorrect key is likely to take longer time to halt. This makes Freestyle resistant to key-guessing attacks i.e. brute-force and dictionary based attacks. Freestyle demonstrates a novel approach for ciphertext randomization by using random number of rounds for each block, where the exact number of rounds are unknown to the receiver in advance. Freestyle provides the possibility of generating $2^{128}$ differ…
Although quantum key distribution is regarded as promising secure communication, security of Y00 protocol proposed by Yuen in 2000 for the affinity to conventional optical communication is not well-understood yet; its security has been evaluated only by the eavesdropper's error probabilities of detecting individual signals or masking size, the number of hidden signal levels under quantum and classical noise. Our study is the first challenge of evaluating the guessing probabilities on shared secret keys for pseudorandom number generators in a simplified Y00 communication system based on quantum…
Recently, Pareek et al. proposed a symmetric key block cipher using multiple one-dimensional chaotic maps. This paper reports some new findings on the security problems of this kind of chaotic cipher: 1) a number of weak keys exists; 2) some important intermediate data of the cipher are not sufficiently random; 3) the whole secret key can be broken by a known-plaintext attack with only 120 consecutive known plain-bytes in one known plaintext. In addition, it is pointed out that an improved version of the chaotic cipher proposed by Wei et al. still suffers from all the same security defects.
Recently, an image encryption scheme based on chaotic standard and logistic maps was proposed by Patidar et al. It was later reported by Rhouma et al. that an equivalent secret key can be reconstructed with only one known/chosen-plaintext and the corresponding ciphertext. Patidar et al. soon modified the original scheme and claimed that the modified scheme is secure against Rhouma et al.'s attack. In this paper, we point out that the modified scheme is still insecure against the same known/chosen-plaintext attack. In addition, some other security defects existing in both the original and the m…
This paper presents a comprehensive analysis on the security of the Yi-Tan-Siew chaotic cipher proposed in [IEEE TCAS-I 49(12):1826-1829 (2002)]. A differential chosen-plaintext attack and a differential chosen-ciphertext attack are suggested to break the sub-key K, under the assumption that the time stamp can be altered by the attacker, which is reasonable in such attacks. Also, some security Problems about the sub-keys $α$ and $β$ are clarified, from both theoretical and experimental points of view. Further analysis shows that the security of this cipher is independent of the use of the chao…
The XCRUSH family of non-Feistel, ARX block ciphers is designed to make efficient use of modern 64-bit general-purpose processors using a small number of encryption rounds which are simple to implement in software. The avalanche function, which applies one data-dependent, key-dependent rotation per 64-bit word of plaintext per round, allows XCRUSH to achieve an almost totally diffuse 256-bit block after just the first two rounds. Designed for speed in software, 3-round XCRUSH is measured at ~7.3 cycles/byte single-threaded on an Intel Haswell processor. A pseudorandom number generator, constru…
Recently, a new domino signal encryption algorithm (DSEA) was proposed for digital signal transmission, especially for digital images and videos. This paper analyzes the security of DSEA, and points out the following weaknesses: 1) its security against the brute-force attack was overestimated; 2) it is not sufficiently secure against ciphertext-only attacks, and only one ciphertext is enough to get some information about the plaintext and to break the value of a sub-key; 3) it is insecure against known/chosen-plaintext attacks, in the sense that the secret key can be recovered from a number of…
Recently Lin et al. proposed a method of using the underdetermined BSS (blind source separation) problem to realize image and speech encryption. In this paper, we give a cryptanalysis of this BSS-based encryption and point out that it is not secure against known/chosen-plaintext attack and chosen-ciphertext attack. In addition, there exist some other security defects: low sensitivity to part of the key and the plaintext, a ciphertext-only differential attack, divide-and-conquer (DAC) attack on part of the key. We also discuss the role of BSS in Lin et al.'s efforts towards cryptographically se…
The proposed hybrid message embedded scheme consists of hill cipher combined with message embedded chaotic scheme. Message-embedded scheme using non-linear feedback shift register as non-linear function and 1-D logistic map as chaotic map is modified, analyzed and tested for avalanche property and strength against known plaintext attack and brute-force attack. Parameter of logistic map acts as a secret key. As we know that the minimum key space to resist brute-force attack is 2100, and it is observed from analysis that key space of the discussed method is lesser than 2100. But the identifiabil…
Block cipher E2, designed and submitted by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, is a first-round Advanced Encryption Standard candidate. It employs a Feistel structure as global structure and two-layer substitution-permutation network structure in round function with initial transformation IT function before the first round and final transformation FT function after the last round. The design principles influences several more recent block ciphers including Camellia, an ISO/IEC standard cipher. In this paper, we focus on the key-recovery attacks on reduced-round E2-128/192 taking both I…
We present a stream cipher based on a chaotic dynamical system. Using a chaotic trajectory sampled under certain rules in order to avoid any attempt to reconstruct the original one, we create a binary pseudo-random keystream that can only be exactly reproduced by someone that has fully knowledge of the communication system parameters formed by a transmitter and a receiver and sharing the same initial conditions. The plaintext is XORed with the keystream creating the ciphertext, the encrypted message. This keystream passes the NISTs randomness test and has been implemented in a videoconference …
In this paper, we introduce a symmetric-key Latin square image cipher (LSIC) for grayscale and color images. Our contributions to the image encryption community include 1) we develop new Latin square image encryption primitives including Latin Square Whitening, Latin Square S-box and Latin Square P-box ; 2) we provide a new way of integrating probabilistic encryption in image encryption by embedding random noise in the least significant image bit-plane; and 3) we construct LSIC with these Latin square image encryption primitives all on one keyed Latin square in a new loom-like substitution-per…
In this paper, we propose to improve the security performance of a recently proposed color image encryption algorithm which is based on multi-chaotic systems. The existing cryptosystem employed a pixel-chaotic-shuffle mechanism to encrypt images, in which the generation of shuffling sequences are independent to the plain-image/cipher-image. As a result, it fails to the chosen-plaintext and known-plaintext attacks. Moreover, the statistical features of the cryptosystem are not up to the standard. Therefore, the security improvements are framed to make the above attacks infeasible and enhance th…
A block cipher is a bijective function that transforms a plaintext to a ciphertext. A block cipher is a principle component in a cryptosystem because the security of a cryptosystem depends on the security of a block cipher. A Feistel network is the most widely used method to construct a block cipher. This structure has a property such that it can transform a function to a bijective function. But the previous Feistel network is unsuitable to construct block ciphers that have large input-output size. One way to construct block ciphers with large input-output size is to use an unbalanced Feistel …
It has been established that quantum algorithms can solve several key cryptographic problems more efficiently than classical computers. As progress continues in the field of quantum computing it is important to understand the risks they pose to deployed cryptographic systems. Here we focus on one of these risks - quantum key-recovery attacks against ideal ciphers. Specifically, we seek to model the risk posed by an economically motivated quantum attacker who will choose to run a quantum key-recovery attack against an ideal cipher if the cost to recover the secret key is less than the value of …
The previous work showed that the Y00 protocol could stay secure with the eavesdropper's guessing probability on the secret keys being strictly less than one under an unlimitedly long known-plaintext attack with quantum memory. However, an assumption that at least a fast correlation attack is completely disabled by irregular mapping. The present study shows that the Y00 protocol can be information-theoretic secure under any quantum-computational crypto-analyses if the Y00 system is well designed. The Y00 protocol directly encrypts messages with short secret keys expanded into pseudo-random run…
In a basic related-key attack against a block cipher, the adversary has access to encryptions under keys that differ from the target key by bit-flips. In this short note we show that for a quantum adversary such attacks are quite powerful: if the secret key is (i) uniquely determined by a small number of plaintext-ciphertext pairs, (ii) the block cipher can be evaluated efficiently, and (iii) a superposition of related keys can be queried, then the key can be extracted efficiently.
Security is a key problem for the transmission, interchange and storage process of multimedia systems and applications. In 2018, M. Li et al. proposed in-depth security analysis on an image encryption algorithm based on a first-order time-delay system (IEATD) and gave a specific chosen-plaintext attack on it. Moreover, an enhanced version called as IEACD was designed to fix the reported security defects. This paper analyzes the essential structures of the two algorithms and evaluates their real security performances: 1) no efficient nonlinear operations are adopted to assure the sensibility of…

In this paper, we propose a novel fault attack termed as Single Event Transient Fault Analysis (SETFA) attack, which is well suited for hardware implementations. The proposed approach pinpoints hotspots in the cypher's Sbox combinational logic circuit that significantly reduce the key entropy when subjected to faults. ELEPHANT is a parallel authenticated encryption and associated data (AEAD) scheme targeted to hardware implementations, a finalist in the Lightweight cryptography (LWC) competition launched by NIST. In this work, we investigate vulnerabilities of ELEPHANT against fault analysis. …
In this paper, security analysis of block ciphers with key length greater than block length is proposed. When key length is significantly greater than block length and the statistical distribution of cipher system is like a uniform distribution, there are more than one key which map fixed input to fixed output. If a block cipher designed sufficiently random, it is expected that the key space can be classified into same classes. Using such classes of keys, our proposed algorithm would be able to recover the key of block cipher with complexity O(max(2^n, 2^{k-n}) where n is block length and k is…
This paper presents a general strategy to recover a block cipher secret key in the cold boot attack setting. More precisely, we propose a key-recovery method that combines key enumeration algorithms and Grover's quantum algorithm to recover a block cipher secret key after an attacker has procured a noisy version of it via a cold boot attack. We also show how to implement the quantum component of our algorithm for several block ciphers such as AES, PRESENT and GIFT, and LowMC. Additionally, since evaluating the third-round post-quantum candidates of the National Institute of Standards and Techn…
Today, Internet communication security has become more complex as technology becomes faster and more efficient, especially for resource-limited devices such as embedded devices, wireless sensors, and radio frequency identification (RFID) tags, and Internet of Things (IoT). Lightweight encryption algorithms provide security for these devices to protect data against intruders. But the limitation of using energy in lightweight block ciphers (LBCs) is one of the major challenges for ever-expanding IoT technologies. Also, these LBC are subject to Side-channel attacks, which are among the most cited…
We cast encryption via classical block ciphers in terms of operator spreading in a dual space of Pauli strings, a formulation which allows us to characterize classical ciphers by using tools well known in the analysis of quantum many-body systems. We connect plaintext and ciphertext attacks to out-of-time order correlators (OTOCs) and quantify the quality of ciphers using measures of delocalization in string space such as participation ratios and corresponding entropies obtained from the wave function amplitudes in string space. The saturation of the string-space information entropy is accompa…
Fairly recently, a new encryption scheme for audio data encryption has been proposed by Naskar, P.K., et al. The cryptosystem is based on substitution-permutation encryption structure using DNA encoding at the substitution stage, in which the key generation is based on a key chaining algorithm that generates new key block for every plain block using a logistic chaotic map. After some several statistical tests done by the authors of the scheme, they claimed that their cryptosystem is robust and can resist conventional cryptanalysis attacks. Negatively, in this paper we show the opposite: the sc…
Due to implementation constraints the XOR operation is widely used in order to combine plaintext and key bit-strings in secret-key block ciphers. This choice directly induces the classical version of the differential attack by the use of XOR-kind differences. While very natural, there are many alternatives to the XOR. Each of them inducing a new form for its corresponding differential attack (using the appropriate notion of difference) and therefore block-ciphers need to use S-boxes that are resistant against these nonstandard differential cryptanalysis. In this contribution we study the funct…
Encrypted deduplication combines encryption and deduplication to simultaneously achieve both data security and storage efficiency. State-of-the-art encrypted deduplication systems mainly build on deterministic encryption to preserve deduplication effectiveness. However, such deterministic encryption reveals the underlying frequency distribution of the original plaintext chunks. This allows an adversary to launch frequency analysis against the ciphertext chunks and infer the content of the original plaintext chunks. In this paper, we study how frequency analysis affects information leakage in e…
The Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is widely recognized as the most important block cipher in common use nowadays. This high assurance in AES is given by its resistance to ten years of extensive cryptanalysis, that has shown no weakness, not even any deviation from the statistical behaviour expected from a random permutation. Only reduced versions of the ciphers have been broken, but they are not usually implemented. In this paper we build a distinguishing attack on the AES, exploiting the properties of a novel cipher embedding. With our attack we give some statistical evidence that the se…
