One of the firm predictions of the single-scalar field inflationary cosmology is the consistency relation between the scalar and tensor perturbations. It has been argued that such a relation, if observationally verified, would offer strong support for the idea of inflation. In this letter, we critically analyze the validity of the consistency relation in the context of spinflation. Spinflaton -- a scalar condensate of the Elko field -- has a single scalar degree of freedom and leads to the identical acceleration equation as the single canonical scalar field. We obtain the perturbation equations for the Einstein-Elko system and show that (i) The scalar perturbations are purely adiabatic and speed of the perturbations is identically one. (ii) In the slow-roll limit, the scalar and tensor perturbations are nearly scale-invariant and (iii) Obtain the consistency relations for the scalar and tensor spectra.
The apparent alignment of the cosmic microwave background multipoles on large scales challenges the standard cosmological model. Scalar field inflation is isotropic and cannot account for the observed alignment. We explore the imprints, a non-standard spinor driven inflation would leave on the cosmic microwave background anisotropies. We show it is natural to expect an anisotropic inflationary expansion of the Universe which has the effect of suppressing the low multipole amplitude of the primordial power spectrum, while at the same time to provide the usual inflationary features.
Inflation driven by a single dark spinor field is discussed. We define the notion of a dark spinor field and derive the cosmological field equations for such a matter source. The conditions for inflation are determined and an exactly solvable model is presented. We find the power spectrum of the quantum fluctuation of this field and compare the results with scalar field inflation.
We consider toy cosmological models in which a classical, homogeneous, spinor field provides a dominant or sub-dominant contribution to the energy-momentum tensor of a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe. We find that, if such a field were to exist, appropriate choices of the spinor self-interaction would generate a rich variety of behaviors, quite different from their widely studied scalar field counterparts. We first discuss solutions that incorporate a stage of cosmic inflation and estimate the primordial spectrum of density perturbations seeded during such a stage. Inflation driven by…
Recently, a spin one half matter field with mass dimension one was discovered, called Elko spinors. The present work shows how to introduce these fields into a curved spacetime by the standard covariantisation scheme. After formulating the coupled Einstein-Elko field equations, the spacetime is assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic in order to simplify the resulting field equations. Analytical ghost Elko solutions are constructed which have vanishing energy-momentum tensor without and with cosmological constant. The cosmological Elko theory is finally related to the standard scalar field the…
We present a model of inflation based on the anomaly-induced effective action of gravity in the presence of a conformally invariant Hilbert-Einstein term. Our approach is based on the conformal representation of the fields action and on the integration of the corresponding conformal anomaly. In contradistinction to the original Starobinsky's model, inflation can be stable at the beginning and unstable at the end. The instability is caused by a slowing down of inflation due to quantum effects associated to the massive fermion fields. In supersymmetric theories this mechanism can be linked to th…
We consider modified $f(R)$ gravity which may unify $R^m$ early-time inflation with late-time $Λ$CDM epoch. It is shown that such model passes the local tests (Newton law, stability of Earth-like gravitational solution, very heavy mass for additional scalar degree of freedom) and suggests the realistic alternative for General Relativity. Various scenarios for future evolution of $f(R)$ $Λ$CDM era are discussed.
Born-Infeld strategy to smooth theories having divergent solutions is applied to teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity. Differing from other theories of modified gravity, modified teleparallelism leads to second order equations, since teleparallel Lagrangian only contains first derivatives of the vierbein. We show that Born-Infeld-modified teleparallelism solves the particle horizon problem in a spatially flat FRW universe by providing an initial exponential expansion without resorting to an inflaton field.
We review the unification of early-time inflation with late-time acceleration in several local modified gravity models which pass Solar System and cosmological tests. It is also demonstrated that account of non-local gravitational corrections to the action does not destroy the possibility of such unification. Dark matter effect is caused by composite graviton degree of freedom in such models.
We consider FRW cosmology in non-local modified gravity. Its local scalar-tensor formulation is developed. It is explicitly demonstrated that such theory may lead to the unification of early-time inflation with late-time cosmic acceleration. The quintessence or phantom era may emerge for specific form of the action. The coupled non-local-F(R) gravity is also investigated. It is shown that such theory being consistent with Solar System tests may lead to the known universe history sequence: inflation, radiation/matter dominance and dark epoch.
The modified gravity, which eliminates the need for dark energy and which seems to be stable, is considered. The terms with positive powers of the curvature support the inflationary epoch while the terms with negative powers of the curvature serve as effective dark energy, supporting current cosmic acceleration. The equivalent scalar-tensor gravity may be compatible with the simplest solar system experiments.
We extend previous work on the minimal D-term inflation model modified by Right-Handed (RH) sneutrino fields to include additional inflaton-sector SUGRA corrections and two-field inflation effects. We show that SUGRA corrections simultaneously allow n_{s} to be within 3-year WMAP limits and the cosmic string contribution to the CMB power spectrum to be less than 5%. For gauge coupling g < 1, the CMB contribution from cosmic strings is predicted to be at least 1% while the spectral index is predicted to be less than 0.968 for a CMB string contribution less than 5%. Treating the inflaton-RH sneu…
We suggest two realistic f(R) and one F(G) modified gravities which are consistent with local tests and cosmological bounds. The typical property of such theories is the presence of the effective cosmological constant epochs in such a way that early-time inflation and late-time cosmic acceleration are naturally unified within single model. It is shown that classical instability does not appear here and Newton law is respected. Some discussion of possible anti-gravity regime appearence and related modification of the theory is done.
We consider the modified gravity non-minimally coupled with matter Lagrangian for the description of early-time and late-time universe. Such $F(R)$ ($F(G)$) gravity in the absence of non-minimal coupling is viable theory which passes the local tests and reproduces the $Λ$CDM era. For qualitatively similar choice of non-minimal gravitational coupling function it is shown that the unified description of early-time inflation and late-time cosmic acceleration is possible. It is interesting that matter (scalar) which supports the inflationary era is gravitationally screened at late times. Hence, it…
Single field inflationary models with a non-minimal kinetic term (also called k-inflationary models) can be characterised by the so-called sound flow functions, which complete the usual Hubble flow hierarchy. These parameters appear in the primordial power spectra of cosmological perturbations at leading order and, therefore, affect the resulting Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies. Using the fifth year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP5) data, we derive the marginalised posterior probability distributions for both the sound and Hubble flow parameters. In contrast to the st…
We consider the constraints that can be imposed on a wide class of Inflation models in modified gravity scenarios in which the Friedmann equation is modified by the inclusion of $ρ^2$ terms, where $ρ$ is the total energy density. In particular we obtain the reheating temperature and gravitino abundance associated with the end of inflation. Whereas models of chaotic inflation and natural inflation can easily avoid the conventional gravitino overproduction problem, we show that supersymmetric hybrid inflation models (driven by both F and D-terms) do not work in the $ρ^2$ dominated era. We also s…
A general approach to viable modified $f(R)$ gravity is developed in both the Jordan and the Einstein frames. A class of exponential, realistic modified gravities is introduced and investigated with care. Special focus is made on step-class models, most promising from the phenomenological viewpoint and which provide a natural way to classify all viable modified gravities. One- and two-steps models are explicitly considered, but the analysis is extensible to $N$-step models. Both inflation in the early universe and the onset of recent accelerated expansion arise in these models in a natural, un…
We review modified $F(R)$ gravity as realistic candidate to describe the observable universe expansion history. We show that recent cosmic acceleration, radiation/matter-dominated epoch and inflation could be realized in the framework of $F(R)$-gravity in the unified way. For some viable classes of $F(R)$-gravity, the Newton law is respected and there is no so-called matter instability (the very heavy positive mass for additional scalar degree of freedom is generated). The reconstruction program in modified gravity is also reviewed and it is demonstrated that {\it any} time-evolution of the un…
We consider a physically viable cosmological model that has a field dependent Gauss-Bonnet coupling in its effective action, in addition to a standard scalar field potential. The presence of such terms in the four dimensional effective action gives rise to several novel effects, such as a four dimensional flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe undergoing a cosmic inflation at early epoch, as well as a cosmic acceleration at late times. The model predicts, during inflation, spectra of both density perturbations and gravitational waves that may fall well within the experimental bounds. Further…
There are good indications that fundamental physics gives rise to a modified space-momentum uncertainty relation that implies the existence of a minimum length scale. We implement this idea in the scalar field theory that describes density perturbations in flat Robertson-Walker space-time. This leads to a non-linear time-dependent dispersion relation that encodes the effects of Planck scale physics in the inflationary epoch. Unruh type dispersion relations naturally emerge in this approach, while unbounded ones are excluded by the minimum length principle. We also find red-shift induced modifi…
We obtain a new class of exact cosmological solutions for multi-scalar fields with exponential potentials. We generalize the assisted inflation solutions previously obtained, and demonstrate how they are modified when there exist cross-couplings between the fields, such as occur in supergravity inspired cosmological models.
Recently we have presented a new formulation of the theory of gravity based on an implementation of the Einstein Equivalence Principle distinct from General Relativity. The kinetic part of the theory - that describes how matter is affected by the modified geometry due to the gravitational field - is the same as in General Relativity. However, we do not consider the metric as an independent field. Instead, it is an effective one, constructed in terms of two fundamental spinor fields $Ψ$ and $Υ$ and thus the metric does not have a dynamics of its own, but inherits its evolution through its relat…
If the initial state of the inflaton field is taken to have a thermal distribution instead of the conventional zero particle vacuum state then the curvature power spectrum gets modified by a temperature dependent factor such that the fluctuation spectrum of the microwave background radiation is enhanced at larger angles. We compare this modified cosmic microwave background spectrum with Wilkinson microwave anisotropy probe data to obtain an upper bound on the temperature of the inflaton at the time our current horizon crossed the horizon during inflation. We further conclude that there must be…
In this paper we derive the Modified Friedmann equation in the Palatini formulation of $R^2$ gravity. Then we use it to discuss the problem of whether in Palatini formulation a $R^2$ term can drive an inflation. We show that the Palatini formulation of $R^2$ gravity cannot lead to gravity-driven inflation. If considering no zero radiation and matter energy densities, we show that only under rather restrictive assumption about the radiation and matter energy densities there will be a mild power-law inflation $a\sim t^2$.
We explore the noncommutative effect on single field inflation and compare with WMAP five-year data. First, we calculate the noncommutative effect from the potential and dynamical terms, and construct the general form of modified power spectrum. Second, we consider the leading order modification of slow-roll, DBI and K-inflation and unite the modification, which means the modification is nearly model independent at this level. Finally, comparing with the WMAP5 data, we find that the modified can be well realized as the origin of the relative large spectral index and the quite small running.
We argue that the dynamics of photons canonically coupled to scalars in de Sitter inflation gets modified by a photon mass term. This might have lead to generation of potentially observable magnetic field correlated over cosmological scales today.
