The Brown-Kuchar mechanism is applied in the case of General Relativity coupled with the Schutz model for a perfect fluid. Using the canonical formalism and manipulating the set of modified constraints one is able to recover the definition of a time evolution operator, i.e. a physical Hamiltonian, expressed as a functional of gravitational variables and the entropy.
In the present work, we study the quantum cosmology description of closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models in the presence of a positive cosmological constant and a generic perfect fluid. We work in the Schutz's variational formalism. If one uses the scale factor and its canonically conjugated momentum as the phase space variables that describe the geometrical sector of these models, one obtains Wheeler-DeWitt equations with operator ordering ambiguities. In order to avoid those ambiguities and simplify the quantum treatment of the models, we introduce new phase space variables. We explicitly…
The connection is established between two different action principles for perfect fluids in the context of general relativity. For one of these actions, $S$, the fluid four--velocity is expressed as a sum of products of scalar fields and their gradients (the velocity--potential representation). For the other action, ${\bar S}$, the fluid four--velocity is proportional to the totally antisymmetric product of gradients of the fluid Lagrangian coordinates. The relationship between $S$ and ${\bar S}$ is established by expressing $S$ in Hamiltonian form and identifying certain canonical coordinates…
A generalization of the notion of ellipsoids to curved Riemannian spaces is given and the possibility to use it in describing the shapes of rotating bodies in general relativity is examined. As an illustrative example, stationary, axisymmetric perfect-fluid spacetimes with a so-called confocal inside ellipsoidal symmetry are investigated in detail under the assumption that the 4-velocity of the fluid is parallel to a time-like Killing vector field. A class of perfect-fluid metrics representing interior NUT-spacetimes is obtained along with a vacuum solution with a non-zero cosmological constan…
We study the signature change in a perfect fluid Friedmann-Robertson-Walker quantum cosmological model. In this work the Schutz's variational formalism is applied to recover the notion of time. This gives rise to a Schrodinger-Wheeler-DeWitt equation with arbitrary ordering for the scale factor. We use the eigenfunctions in order to construct wave packets and evaluate the time-dependent expectation value of the scale factor which coincides with the ontological interpretation. We show that these solutions exhibit signature transitions from a finite Euclidean to a Lorentzian domain. Moreover, su…
In this article we investigate and develop specific aspects of Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) scalar field cosmologies related to the interpretation that canonical and phantom scalar field sources may be interpreted as cosmological configurations with a mixture of two interacting barotropic perfect fluids: a matter component $ρ_1(t)$ with a stiff equation of state ($p_1=ρ_1$), and an "effective vacuum energy" $ρ_2(t)$ with a cosmological constant equation of state ($p_2=-ρ_2$). An important characteristic of this alternative equivalent formulation in the framework of interacting cosmologies …
The variational theory of the perfect fluid with an intrinsic hypermomentum is developed. The Lagrangian density of such fluid is stated and the equations of motion of the fluid and the evolution equation of the hypermomentum tensor are derived. The expressions of the matter currents of the fluid (the metric stress-energy 4-form, the canonical energy-momentum 3-form and the hypermomentum 3-form) are obtained.
It is widely acknowledged that, for formal purposes, a minimally coupled scalar field is equivalent to an effective perfect fluid with equation of state determined by the scalar potential. This correspondence is not complete because the Lagrangian densities P and -rho, which are equivalent for a perfect fluid, are not equivalent for a minimally coupled scalar field. The exchange between these two Lagrangian densities amounts to exchanging a canonical scalar field with a phantom scalar field.

I investigate the relation between an operative definition of the area of a surface specified by matter fields and the area operators recently introduced in the canonical/loop approach to Quantum Gravity and in Rovelli's variant of the Husain-Kuchar Quantum-Gravity toy model. The results suggest that the discreteness of the spectra of the area operators might not be observable.
The variational theory of the perfect hypermomentum fluid is developed. The new type of the generalized Frenkel condition is considered. The Lagrangian density of such fluid is stated, and the equations of motion of the fluid and the Weyssenhoff-type evolution equation of the hypermomentum tensor are derived. The expressions of the matter currents of the fluid (the canonical energy-momentum 3-form, the metric stress-energy 4-form and the hypermomentum 3-form) are obtained. The special case of the dilaton-spin fluid with intrinsic spin and dilatonic charge is considered.
The variational theory of the perfect fluid with intrinsic spin and dilatonic charge (dilaton-spin fluid) is developed. The spin tensor obeys the classical Frenkel condition. The Lagrangian density of such fluid is stated, and the equations of motion of the fluid, the Weyssenhoff-type evolution equation of the spin tensor and the conservation law of the dilatonic charge are derived. The expressions of the matter currents of the fluid (the canonical energy-momentum 3-form, the metric stress-energy 4-form and the dilaton-spin momentum 3-form) are obtained.
We present a new parametric class of spherically symmetric analytic solutions of the general relativistic field equations in canonical coordinates, which corresponds to causal models of perfect fluid balls. These solutions describe perfect fluid balls with infinite central pressure and infinite central density though their ratio is positively finite and less then one. From the solutions of this class we have constructed two causal models in which outmarch of pressure, density is positive and monotonically decreasing and pressure-density ratio is less than one throughout with in the balls. Corr…
Both real and complex connections have been used for canonical gravity: the complex connection has SL(2,C) as gauge group, while the real connection has SU(2) as gauge group. We show that there is an arbitrary parameter $β$ which enters in the definition of the real connection, in the Poisson brackets, and therefore in the scale of the discrete spectra one finds for areas and volumes in the corresponding quantum theory. A value for $β$ could be could be singled out in the quantum theory by the Hamiltonian constraint, or by the rotation to the complex Ashtekar connection.
For a static, perfect fluid sphere with a general equation of state, we obtain the relativistic equation of hydrostatic equilibrium, namely the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equation, as the thermodynamical equilibrium in the microcanonical, as well as the canonical, ensemble. We find that the stability condition determined by the second variation of entropy coincides with the dynamical stability condition derived by variations to first order in the dynamical Einstein's equations. Thus, we show the equivalence of microcanonical thermodynamical stability with linear dynamical stability for a static…
Action functionals describing relativistic perfect fluids are presented. Two of these actions apply to fluids whose equations of state are specified by giving the fluid energy density as a function of particle number density and entropy per particle. Other actions apply to fluids whose equations of state are specified in terms of other choices of dependent and independent fluid variables. Particular cases include actions for isentropic fluids and pressureless dust. The canonical Hamiltonian forms of these actions are derived, symmetries and conserved charges are identified, and the boundary va…
In the context of recently proposed holographic dualities between higher spin theories in AdS3 and 1+1-dimensional CFTs with W-symmetry algebras, we revisit the definition of higher spin black hole thermodynamics and the dictionary between bulk fields and dual CFT operators. We build a canonical formalism based on three ingredients: a gauge-invariant definition of conserved charges and chemical potentials in the presence of higher spin black holes, a canonical definition of entropy in the bulk, and a bulk-to-boundary dictionary aligned with the asymptotic symmetry algebra. We show that our can…
We generalize the idea of Vassiliev invariants to the spin network context, with the aim of using these invariants as a kinematical arena for a canonical quantization of gravity. This paper presents a detailed construction of these invariants (both ambient and regular isotopic) requiring a significant elaboration based on the use of Chern-Simons perturbation theory which extends the work of Kauffman, Martin and Witten to four-valent networks. We show that this space of knot invariants has the crucial property -from the point of view of the quantization of gravity- of being loop differentiable …
An analysis of adiabatic perturbations of a perfect fluid is performed to first-order about a general FLRW background using the 1+3 covariant and gauge-invariant formalism. The analog of the Mukhanov-Sasaki variable and the canonical variables needed to quantise respectively the scalar and tensor perturbations in a general FLRW background space-time are identified. The dynamics of the vector perturbations is also discussed.
A new formulation of relativistic classical mechanics allows a revisiting of old unsolved problems in relativistic kinetic theory and in relativistic statistical mechanics. In particular a definition of the relativistic micro-canonical partition function is given strictly in terms of the Poincaré generators of an interacting N-particle system both in the inertial and non-inertial rest frames. The non-relativistic limit allows a definition of both the inertial and non-inertial micro-canonical ensemble strictly in terms of the Galilei generators. Also the one-particle relativistic distribution f…
We construct a 2nd quantized reformulation of canonical Loop Quantum Gravity at both kinematical and dynamical level, in terms of a Fock space of spin networks, and show in full generality that it leads directly to the Group Field Theory formalism. In particular, we show the correspondence between canonical LQG dynamics and GFT dynamics leading to a specific GFT model from any definition of quantum canonical dynamics of spin networks. We exemplify the correspondence of dynamics in the specific example of 3d quantum gravity. The correspondence between canonical LQG and covariant spin foam model…
In the present work we consider Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models in the presence of a stiff matter perfect fluid and a cosmological constant. We write the superhamiltonian of these models using the Schutz's variational formalism. We notice that the resulting superhamiltonians have terms that will lead to factor ordering ambiguities when they are written as operators. In order to remove these ambiguities, we introduce appropriate coordinate transformations and prove that these transformations are canonical using the symplectic method.
In [1], the thermal equilibrium of static, spherically symmetric perfect fluids in General Relativity was studied. I would like to elaborate three points relevant to the results of [1]. The first point is only a clarification, summarized in theorem 1 below, of results that appear in [1]. The following two points correct the error in [1], stating that the condition for thermodynamic stability, found in [1], is referring to the microcanonical ensemble, while it was referring to the canonical one. In theorems 2 and 3, specific cases for which equivalence of dynamical and thermodynamic stability h…
In this paper we consider the flat FRW cosmology with a scalar field coupled with the metric along with generalized Chaplygin gas and perfect fluid comprising the matter sector. We use the Schutz's formalism to deal with the generalized Chaplygin gas sector. The full theory is then quantized canonically using the Wheeler-DeWitt Hamiltonian formalism. We then solve the WD equation with appropriate boundary conditions. Then by defining a proper completeness relation for the self-adjointness of the WD equation we arrive at the wave packet for the universe. It is observed that the peak in the prob…

We review the covariant canonical formalism initiated by D'Adda, Nelson and Regge in 1985, and extend it to include a definition of form-Poisson brackets (FPB) for geometric theories coupled to $p$-forms, gauging free differential algebras. The form-Legendre transformation and the form-Hamilton equations are derived from a $d$-form Lagrangian with $p$-form dynamical fields $ϕ$. Momenta are defined as derivatives of the Lagrangian with respect to the "velocities" $dϕ$ and no preferred time direction is used. Action invariance under infinitesimal form-canonical transformations can be studied in …
