On the level of single atoms and photons, the coupling between atoms and the electromagnetic field is typically very weak. By employing a cavity to confine the field, the strength of this interaction can be increased many orders of magnitude to a point where it dominates over any dissipative process. This strong-coupling regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics has been reached for real atoms in optical cavities, and for artificial atoms in circuit QED and quantum-dot systems. A signature of strong coupling is the splitting of the cavity transmission peak into a pair of resolvable peaks when a single resonant atom is placed inside the cavity - an effect known as vacuum Rabi splitting. The circuit QED architecture is ideally suited for going beyond this linear response effect. Here, we show that increasing the drive power results in two unique nonlinear features in the transmitted heterodyne signal: the supersplitting of each vacuum Rabi peak into a doublet, and the appearance of additional peaks with the characteristic sqrt(n) spacing of the Jaynes-Cummings ladder. These constitute direct evidence for the coupling between the quantized microwave field and the anharmonic spectrum of a superconducting qubit acting as an artificial atom.
We have observed the coherent exchange of a single energy quantum between a flux qubit and a superconducting LC circuit acting as a quantum harmonic oscillator. The exchange of an energy quantum is known as the vacuum Rabi oscillations: the qubit is oscillating between the excited state and the ground state and the oscillator between the vacuum state and the first excited state. We have also obtained evidence of level quantization of the LC circuit by observing the change in the oscillation frequency when the LC circuit was not initially in the vacuum state.
Toida et al. claim in their recent article [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 066802 (2013)] that they `report a direct observation of vacuum Rabi splitting in a GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum dot (DQD) based charge qubit coupled with a superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) resonator'. In this comment, we challenge the main claims made in their paper and show that their results: a) do not provide any evidence of vacuum Rabi oscillations and b) do not provide any direct evidence of vacuum Rabi splitting.
When an atom strongly couples to a cavity, it can undergo coherent vacuum Rabi oscillations. Controlling these oscillatory dynamics quickly relative to the vacuum Rabi frequency enables remarkable capabilities such as Fock state generation and deterministic synthesis of quantum states of light, as demonstrated using microwave frequency devices. At optical frequencies, however, dynamical control of single-atom vacuum Rabi oscillations remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate coherent transfer of optical frequency excitation between a single quantum dot and a cavity by controlling vacuum Rabi o…
Strong light-matter coupling manifested by vacuum Rabi splitting has attracted tremendous attention due to its fundamental importance in cavity quantum-electrodynamics research and great potentials in quantum information applications. A prerequisite for practical applications of the strong coupling in future quantum information processing and coherent manipulation is an all-solid-state system exhibiting room-temperature vacuum Rabi splitting with active control. Here we realized such a system in heterostructure consisting of monolayer WS2 and an individual plasmonic gold nanorod. By taking adv…
We present a theoretical study of a quantum regime of the resistive (whirling) state of dc driven anisotropic single plaquette containing three small Josephson junctions. The current-voltage characteristics of such a system display resonant steps that are due to the resonant interaction between the time dependent Josephson current and the excited electromagnetic oscillations (EOs). The voltage positions of the resonances are determined by the quantum interband transitions of EOs. We show that in the quantum regime as the system is driven on the resonance, coherent Rabi oscillations between the…
We study theoretically the Rabi oscillations of a resonantly driven two-level system linearly coupled to a harmonic oscillator (vibrational mode) with frequency, ω_0. We show that for weak coupling, ω_p \ll ω_0, where ω_p is the polaronic shift, Rabi oscillations are strongly modified in the vicinity of the Rabi-vibronic resonance Ω_R = ω_0, where Ω_R is the Rabi frequency. The width of the resonance is (Ω_R-ω_0) \sim ω_p^{2/3} ω_0^{1/3} \gg ω_p. Within this domain of Ω_R the actual frequency of the Rabi oscillations exhibits a bistable behavior as a function of Ω_R. Importantly, within the re…
We show that it is possible to realize quantum superpositions of switched-on and -off strong light-matter interaction in a single quantum dot- semiconductor microcavity system. Such superpositions enable the observation of counterintuitive quantum conditional dynamics effects. Situations are possible where cavity photons as well as the emitter luminescence display exponential decay but their joint detection probability exhibits vacuum Rabi oscillations. Remarkably, these quantum correlations are also present in the nonequilibrium steady state spectra of such coherently driven dissipative quant…

Nonlinear effects in mesoscopic devices can have both quantum and classical origins. We show that a three-Josephson-junction (3JJ) flux qubit in the _classical_ regime can produce low-frequency oscillations in the presence of an external field in resonance with the (high-frequency) harmonic mode of the system, $ω$. Like in the case of_quantum_ Rabi oscillations, the frequency of these pseudo-Rabi oscillations is much smaller than $ω$ and scales approximately linearly with the amplitude of the external field. This classical effect can be reliably distinguished from its quantum counterpart becau…
The generalized Rabi model (gRM) with both one- and two-photon coupling terms has been successfully implemented in circuit quantum electrodynamics systems. In this paper, we examine theoretically multiphoton resonances in the gRM and derive their effective Hamiltonians. With different detunings in the system, we show that all three- to six-photon resonances can be achieved by involving two intermediate states. Furthermore, we study the interplay between multiphoton resonance and chiral transport of photon Fock states in a resonator junction with broken time-reversal symmetry. Depending on the …
We study a singlet-triplet Josephson junction between a conventional s-wave superconductor and an unconventional p$_{\rm x}$-wave superconductor. The Andreev spectrum of the junction yields a spontaneous magnetization in equilibrium. This allows manipulating the occupation of the Andreev levels using an ac Zeeman field. The induced Rabi oscillations manifest themselves as a resonance in the current-phase relation. For a circularly polarized magnetic field, we find a spin selection rule, yielding Rabi oscillations only in a certain interval of the superconducting phase difference.
The study of microwave and radiofrequency multi-photon transitions in continuous wave (CW) EPR spectroscopy is extended to a Rabi resonance condition, when the radio frequency of the magnetic-field modulation matches the Rabi frequency of a spin system in the microwave field. Using the non-secular perturbation theory based on the Bogoliubov averaging method, the analytical description of the response of the spin system is derived for all modulation frequency harmonics. When the modulation frequency exceeds the EPR linewidth, multi-photon transitions result in sidebands in absorption EPR spectr…

We analyze a system composed of a superconducting flux qubit coupled to a transmission-line resonator driven by two signals with frequencies close to the resonator's harmonics. The first strong signal is used for exciting the system to a high energetic state while a second weak signal is applied for probing effective eigenstates of the system. In the framework of doubly dressed states we showed the possibility of amplification and attenuation of the probe signal by direct transitions at the Rabi frequency. We present a brief review of theoretical and experimental works where a direct resonance…
The sensitivity of the Rabi oscillations of a resonantly driven spin-1/2 system to a weak and slow modulation of the static longitudinal magnetic field, B_0, is studied theoretically. We establish the mapping of a weakly driven two-level system with modulation onto a strongly driven system without modulation. The mapping suggests that different regimes of spin dynamics, known for a strongly driven system, can be realized under common experimental conditions of weak driving (driving field B_ 1 << B_ 0) upon proper choice of the domains of modulation frequency, ω_m, and amplitude, B_2. Fast modu…
The decay of Rabi oscillations provides direct information about coherence of electron spins. When observed in EPR experiments, it is often shortened by spatial inhomogeneity of the microwave field amplitude in a bulk sample. In order to suppress this undesired loss of coherence, we propose an additional dressing of spin states by a weak longitudinal continuous radiofrequency field. Our calculations of the Rabi oscillations between the doubly dressed spin states show that the maximum suppression of decoherence is achieved at the so-called Rabi resonance when the radio-field frequency is in res…
Recent years have seen a growing interest in strong coupling between plasmons and excitons, as a way to generate new quantum optical testbeds and influence chemical dynamics and reactivity. Strong coupling to bright plasmonic modes has been achieved even with single quantum emitters. Dark plasmonic modes fare better in some applications due to longer lifetimes, but are difficult to probe as they are subradiant. Here, we apply electron energy loss (EEL) spectroscopy to demonstrate that a dark mode of an individual plasmonic bowtie can interact with a small number of quantum emitters, as evidenc…
Artificial atoms coupled to surface acoustic waves (SAWs) have played a crucial role in the recent development of circuit quantum acoustodynamics (cQAD). In this paper, we have investigated the interaction of an artificial atom and SAWs beyond the weak coupling regime, focusing on the role of the interdigital transducer (IDT) that enables the coupling. We find a parameter regime in which the IDT acts as a cavity for the atom, rather than an antenna. In other words, the atom forms its own cavity. Similar to an atom coupled to an explicit cavity, this regime is characterized by vacuum-Rabi split…
Superconducting qubits often show signatures of coherent coupling to microscopic two-level fluctuators (TLFs), which manifest themselves as avoided level crossings in spectroscopic data. In this work we study a phase qubit, in which we induce Rabi oscillations by resonant microwave driving. When the qubit is tuned close to the resonance with an individual TLF and the Rabi driving is strong enough (Rabi frequency of order of the qubit-TLF coupling), interesting 4-level dynamics are observed. The experimental data shows a clear asymmetry between biasing the qubit above or below the fluctuator's …
We present a theoretical study of the spin dynamics of a single electron confined in a quantum dot. Spin dynamics is induced by the interplay of electrical driving and the presence of a spatially disordered magnetic field, the latter being transverse to a homogeneous magnetic field. We focus on the case of strong driving, i.e., when the oscillation amplitude $A$ of the electron's wave packet is comparable to the quantum dot length $L$. We show that electrically driven spin resonance can be induced in this system by subharmonic driving, i.e., if the excitation frequency is an integer fraction (…
We investigate the photoinduced effect to the silicene, which is a topological insulator, by the circularly polarized light in off-resonance regime with a frequency much larger than the critical value (also much larger than the frequency about the particle-hole pair creation), and with a perpendicular electric field. The anomalous Rabi frequency which is a non-linear optical, arised by the off-resonance circularly polarized light. The temporal behavior of the pseudospin, valley, and spin degrees of freedom, which are momentum- and quasienergy-dependent, are explored. The anomalous Rabi oscilla…
We develop a formalism of electric dipole spin resonance (EDSR) based on slanting magnetic field, where we especially investigate the microwave amplitude dependence. With increasing microwave amplitude, the Rabi frequency increases linearly for a spin confined in a harmonic potential. How- ever, when the spin is confined in the double-well potential, the Rabi frequency shows sub-linear dependence with increasing the microwave amplitude.
We investigate quantum interference effects in a superconducting Cooper-pair box by taking into account the possibility of tunneling processes involving one and two Cooper pairs. The quantum dynamics is analysed in a framework of three-level model. We compute Landau-Zener probabilities for a linear sweep of the gate charge and investigate Rabi oscillations in a periodically driven three-level system under in- and off- resonance conditions. It was shown that the Landau-Zener probabilities reveal two different patterns: "step" and "beats"-like behaviours associated with the quantum interference …
Vacuum Rabi splitting is observed in a coupled qubit-resonator system consisting of a GaAs double quantum dot and a coplanar waveguide resonator. Derived values of the qubit-resonator coupling strength and the decoherence rate indicate strong coupling, which assures distinct vacuum Rabi oscillation in the system. The amplitude of decoherence is reasonably interpreted in terms of the coupling of electrons to piezoelectric acoustic phonons in GaAs.
The Fano and Rabi models represent remarkably common effects in optics. Here we study the coherent time dynamics of plasmonic systems exhibiting Fano and Rabi resonances. We demonstrate that these systems show fundamentally different dynamics. A system with a Fano resonance displays at most one temporal beat under pulsed excitation, whereas a system in the Rabi regime may have any number of beats. Remarkably, the Fano-like systems show time dynamics with very characteristic coherent tails despite the strong decoherence that is intrinsic for such systems. The coherent Fano and Rabi dynamics tha…
Free electron laser-powered pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments performed at 240 GHz / 8.56 T on the crystalline organic radical BDPA reveal a tip-angle dependent resonant frequency. Frequency shifts as large as 11 MHz (45 ppm) are observed during a single Rabi oscillation. We attribute the frequency shifts to a "dressing" of the nutation by spin-spin interactions. A nonlinear semi-classical model which includes a temperature- and sample-geometry-dependent demagnetizing field reproduces experimental results. Because experiments are performed without a cavity, radiation dam…
When a two-level quantum system is irradiated with a microwave signal, in resonance with the energy difference between the levels, it starts Rabi oscillation between those states. If there are other states close, in energy, to the first two, the Rabi signal will also induce transition to those. Here, we study the probability of transition to the third state, in a three-level system, while a Rabi oscillation between the first two states is performed. We investigate the effect of pulse shaping on the probability and suggest methods for optimizing pulse shapes to reduce transition probability.
We study numerically the onset of higher-level excitations and resonance frequency shifts in the generalized multilevel Rabi model with dispersive coupling under strong driving. The response to a weak probe is calculated using the Floquet method, which allows us to calculate the probe spectrum and extract the resonance frequency. We test our predictions using a superconducting circuit consisting of transmon coupled capacitively to a coplanar waveguide resonator. This system is monitored by a weak probe field, and at the same time driven at various powers by a stronger microwave tone. We show t…
Ultrafast optical pump of exciton resonance in single quantum dot by an elliptically polarized laser pulse is described by the non-Markov balance equations. Population and spin dynamics are investigated and spin-dependent Rabi oscillations are considered for the case of a flat quantum dot, with the lateral size greater than the height. The following peculiarities of temporal evolution have been found: a) a beating of Rabi oscillations under an elliptically polarized pump and b) quenching of spin orientation due to a spin-orbit splitting effect.
We investigate theoretically the photo absorbtion of the cluster of alkali atoms embedded into a single mode quantum microcavity. We show that when the energy of the giant plasmonic resonance lies close to the energy of the cavity mode, the strong coupling between plasmon and cavity photon can occur, which is characterized by mode anticrossing and observation of the doublet structure in ptotoabsorbtion. The characteristic values of the Rabi splitting are expected to be several orders of magnitude larger then those observed in single quantum dot-cavity systems.
We show that the interaction between carriers confined in a quantum dot and the surrounding lattice under external driving of carrier dynamics has a dynamical, resonant character. The quality of Rabi oscillations in such a system depends on the relation between nonlinear spectral characteristics of the driven dynamics and the spectral density of effectively coupled lattice modes (phonon frequencies and density of states). For a large number of Rabi oscillations within a fixed time (allowed by e.g. exciton recombination) the spectrum of the dynamics extends towards high frequencies, coming into…
Scaling up qubits is a necessary step to realize useful systems of quantum computation. Here we demonstrate coherent manipulations of four individual electron spins using a micro-magnet method in a quadruple quantum dot - the largest number of dots used for the single spin control in multiple quantum dots. We observe Rabi oscillations and electron spin resonance (ESR) for each dot and evaluate the spin-electric coupling of the four dots, and finally discuss practical approaches to independently address single spin control in multiple quantum dot systems containing even more quantum dots.
We study the energy level structure of the Tavis-Cumming model applied to an ensemble of independent magnetic spins $s=1/2$ coupled to a variable number of photons. Rabi splittings are calculated and their distribution is analyzed as a functin of photon number $n_{\rm max}$ and spin system size $N$. A sharp transition in the distribution of the Rabi frequency is found at $n_{\rm max}\approx N$. The width of the Rabi frequency spectrum diverges as $\sqrt{N}$ at this point. For increased number of photons $n_{\rm max}>N$, the Rabi frequencies converge to a value proportional to $\sqrt{n_{\rm max…
Recent electron spin resonance experiments on CaWO$_4$:Gd$^{3+}$ and on other magnetic impurities have demonstrated that sustained Rabi oscillations can be created by driving a magnetic moment with a microwave field frequency slightly larger than the Larmor frequency and tuned to the Floquet resonance together with another microwave field (image drive). These observations are confirmed by the new experimental results reported in this paper. We investigate several mechanisms of decoherence and dissipation by using a combination of numerical and analytical techniques. The first microscopic model…
We study electron transport properties through a double quantum dot (DQD) system coupled to a single mode photon cavity, DQD-cavity. The DQD system has a complex multilevel energy spectrum, in which by tuning the photon energy several anti-crossings between the electron states of the DQD system and photon dressed states are produced, which have not been seen in a simple two level DQD system. Three different regions of the photon energy are studied based on anti-crossings, where the photon energy ranges are classified as "low", "intermediate", and "high". The anti-crossings represent multiple R…
For a superconducting qubit driven to perform Rabi oscillations and coupled to a slow electromagnetic or nano-mechanical oscillator we describe previously unexplored quantum optics effects. When the Rabi frequency is tuned to resonance with the oscillator the latter can be driven far from equilibrium. Blue detuned driving leads to a population inversion in the qubit and a bi-stability with lasing behavior of the oscillator; for red detuning the qubit cools the oscillator. This behavior persists at the symmetry point where the qubit-oscillator coupling is quadratic and decoherence effects are m…
We show how the switching-on of an electron transport through a system of two parallel quantum dots embedded in a short quantum wire in a photon cavity can trigger coupled Rabi and collective electron-photon oscillations. We select the initial state of the system to be an eigenstate of the closed system containing two Coulomb interacting electrons with possibly few photons of a single cavity mode. The many-level quantum dots are described by a continuous potential. The Coulomb interaction and the para- and dia-magnetic electron-photon interactions are treated by exact diagonalization in a trun…
The analytical solution of the task of the interaction of quantized EM-field with multichain quasionedimensional axially symmetric qubit system by taking into account both the intrachain and interchain qubit coupling has been obtained for the first time. The appearance of additional lines in optical spectra of quasionedimensional systems strongly interacting with EM-field is predicted. They are result of nonstationary registration conditions, to be consequence of Rabi wave packet formation and correspond to Fourier transformation of revival part of Rabi wave packets in temporal dependence of t…
We study the coherent dynamics of a qubit excited by an amplitude-modulated electromagnetic field under the Rabi resonance when the frequency of the low-frequency modulation field matches the Rabi frequency in the high-frequency field. Due to destructive interference of multiple photon processes at the ultrastrong coupling between the qubit and the low-frequency driving field, Rabi oscillations result exclusively from the Bloch-Siegert effect. It is directly observed in the time-resolved coherent dynamics as the Bloch-Siegert oscillation. In this case, triplets in Fourier spectra of the cohere…
A semiconductor nanowire quantum dot with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can be used to achieve a spin-orbit qubit. In contrast to a spin qubit, the spin-orbit qubit can respond to an external ac electric field, an effect called electric-dipole spin resonance. Here we develop a theory that can apply in the strong SOC regime. We find that there is an optimal SOC strength η_{opt}=\sqrt{2}/2, where the Rabi frequency induced by the ac electric field becomes maximal. Also, we show that both the level spacing and the Rabi frequency of the spin-orbit qubit have periodic responses to the direction …
Electron Paramagnetic Resonance experiments show that the decay of Rabi oscillations of ensembles of spin qubits depends noticeably on the microwave power and more precisely on the Rabi frequency, an effect recently called "driven decoherence". By direct numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation of the associated many-body system, we scrutinize the different mechanisms that may lead to this type of decoherence. Assuming the effects of dissipation to be negligible ($T_1=\infty$), it is shown that a system of dipolar-coupled spins with -- even weak-- random inhomogeneities is…
We investigate temperature-dependent resonance fluorescence spectra obtained from a single self-assembled quantum dot. A decrease of the Mollow triplet sideband splitting is observed with increasing temperature, an effect we attribute to a phonon-induced renormalisation of the driven dot Rabi frequency. We also present first evidence for a non-perturbative regime of phonon coupling, in which the expected linear increase in sideband linewidth as a function of temperature is cancelled by the corresponding reduction in Rabi frequency. These results indicate that dephasing in semiconductor quantum…
We consider joint effects of tunneling and spin-orbit coupling on driven by electric field spin dynamics in a double quantum dot with a multi-level resonance scenario. We demonstrate that tunneling plays the crucial role in the formation of the Rabi-like spin-flip transitions. In contrast to the linear behavior for weak electric fields, the spin flip rate becomes much smaller than expected for the two-level model and shows oscillating dependence on the driving field amplitude in stronger fields. In addition, the full spin flip is very difficult to achieve in a multi-level resonant system. Thes…
We present an analytical approach to the problem of the multiphoton absorption and Rabi oscillations in an armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR) in the presence of a time-oscillating strong electric field induced by a light wave directed parallel to the ribbon axis. The two-dimensional Dirac equation for the massless electron subject to the ribbon confinement is employed. In the resonant approximation the electron-hole pair production rate, associated with the electron transitions between the valence and conduction size-quantized subbands, the corresponding multiphoton absorption coefficient and…
