We complete the list of one loop renormalization group equations and matching conditions relevant for the computation of the electroweak precision parameters $S$ and $T$ in the three site Higgsless model. We obtain one-loop formulas for $S$ and $T$ expressed in terms of physical observables such as the KK gauge boson mass $M_{W'}$, the KK fermion mass $M$, and the KK gauge boson ($W'$) couplings with light quarks and leptons $g_{W'ff}$. It is shown that these physical observables, $M_{W'}$, $M$ and $g_{W'ff}$ are severely constrained by the electroweak precision data. Unlike the tree level analysis on the ideally delocalized fermion, we find that perfect fermiophobity of $W'$ is ruled out by the precision data. We also study the cutoff dependence of our analysis. Although the model is non-renormalizable, the dependence on the cutoff parameter $Λ$ is shown to be non-significant.
In 5 dimensions the electroweak symmetry can be broken by boundary conditions, leading to a new type of Higgsless theories. These could in principle improve on the 4D case by extending the perturbative domain to energies higher than $4 πv$ and by allowing a better fit to the electroweak precision tests. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that both these improvements can be achieved, as we show by discussing these problems in an explicit model.
We present a one-loop calculation of the oblique S parameter within Higgsless models of electroweak symmetry breaking. We have used a general effective Lagrangian with at most two derivatives, implementing the chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R -> SU(2)_{L+R} with Goldstones, gauge bosons and one multiplet of vector and axial-vector resonances. The estimation is based on the short-distance constraints and the dispersive approach proposed by Peskin and Takeuchi.
We study tree level corrections to precision electroweak physics in the recently proposed Higgsless models in warped space. Such models inherit from their similarity with technicolor theories a large contribution to the oblique parameters, S in particular. We show that it is possible to suppress S using brane induced kinetic terms and unequal left-right bulk gauge couplings, paying the price of heavy KK modes. In the allowed region, they are eventually ineffective in restoring perturbative unitarity in W scattering above 2 TeV. Although it looks like a Higgsless models' bane, it has been recen…
This is a pedagogical introduction into the possible uses and effects of extra dimensions in electroweak (TeV scale) physics, and in particular to models of electroweak symmetry breaking via boundary conditions ("higgsless models"). It is self contained: all the aspects of extra dimensional and electroweak physics used here are reviewed, before we apply these concepts to higgsless models. In the first lecture gauge theories in an extra dimension and on an interval are discussed. In the second lecture we describe the basic structure of higgsless models, while in the third lecture we discuss fer…
Extra-dimensional Higgsless models with electroweak symmetry breaking through boundary conditions generically have difficulties with electroweak precision constraints, when the fermions are localized to the ``branes'' in the fifth dimension. In this paper we show that these constraints can be relaxed by allowing the light fermions to have a finite extent into the bulk of the fifth dimension. The $T$ and $U$ electroweak parameters can be naturally suppressed by a custodial symmetry, while the $S$ parameter can be made to vanish through a cancellation, if the leakage into the bulk of the light g…
We use conditions for unitarity cancellations to constrain the couplings of the top and bottom quarks to Kaluza-Klein modes in Higgsless models of electroweak symmetry breaking. An example for the mass spectrum of quark resonances in a theory space model is given and the implications for the collider phenomenology in the top sector are discussed, comparing to signatures of Little Higgs and strong electroweak symmetry breaking models.
It is possible to construct models based on warped extra dimensions in which electroweak symmetry breaking takes place without the introduction of any Higgs fields. This breaking can occur through the judiciuous choice of boundary conditions applied to gauge fields living in the bulk. One then finds that the fifth components of these bulk fields act as the Goldstone bosons, even for the would-be zero modes of the Kaluza-Klein tower. In this talk I will discuss the phenomenology of such scenarios, in particular, the problems associated with the construction of realistic models due to the simult…
In this note we calculate the form of electroweak corrections in deconstructed Higgsless models for the case of a fermion whose weak properties arise from two adjacent SU(2) groups on the deconstructed lattice. We show that, as recently proposed in the continuum, it is possible for the value of the electroweak parameter alpha S to be small in such a model. In addition, by working in the deconstructed limit, we may directly evaluate the size of off-Z-pole electroweak corrections arising from the exchange of Kaluza-Klein modes; this has not been studied in the continuum. The size of these correc…
We present a 6D Higgsless Standard Model with a realistic gauge sector. The model uses only the Standard Model gauge group SU(2)xU(1) with the gauge bosons propagating in flat extra dimensions which are compactified on a rectangle. The electroweak symmetry is broken by boundary conditions, and the correct splitting between the W and Z boson masses can be arranged by a suitable choice of the compactification scales. The higher Kaluza-Klein excitations of the gauge bosons decouple from the low-energy theory due to dominant brane kinetic terms. The model has the following two key features compare…
We present a Higgsless Standard Model in six dimensions, based on the Standard Model gauge group SU(2)xU(1), with two flat extra dimensions compactified on a rectangle. The electroweak symmetry is broken by boundary conditions and realistic gauge boson masses can be accomodated by proper choice of the compactification scales and brane kinetic terms. With respect to oblique corrections, the agreement with electroweak precision tests is somewhat improved compared to the simplest five-dimensional Higgsless models.
We discuss the possibility of breaking the electroweak symmetry in theories with extra dimensions via boundary conditions, without a physical Higgs scalar in the spectrum. In these models the unitarity violation scale can be delayed via the exchange of massive KK gauge bosons. The correct W/Z mass ratio can be enforced in a model in warped space with a left-right symmetric gauge group in the bulk. Fermion masses can be similarly generated via boundary conditions. In the perturbative regime the S parameter is too large in the simplest model, however this can be alleviated in by changing the str…
The main challenge faced by Higgsless models of electroweak symmetry breaking is to reconcile the experimental constraints imposed by the precision electroweak data and the top quark phenomenology with the unitarity constraints imposed by longitudinal gauge boson scattering amplitudes. In this paper we expand on previous work, giving details of how delocalized fermions can be used to adjust the $S$ parameter to zero, while keeping the $T$ and $U$ parameters naturally suppressed. We also show that it is possible to obtain the top quark mass, without affecting the delay of unitarity violation of…
We study the viability of generic Higgsless models at low energies when compliance with EWPO and unitarity constraints up to the TeV scale are imposed. Our analysis shows that consistency with S and T can be achieved at the one-loop level even with a single light vector state, m_V <= 500 GeV. However, this scenario turns out to be strongly disfavored when direct resonance searches at the Tevatron are also taken into account. We show that a fully consistent picture can be obtained if an axial state is introduced. Interestingly, m_V is still predicted to be light (below 1 TeV) while typical valu…
This talk reviews recent progress in Higgsless models of electroweak symmetry breaking, and summarizes relevant points of model-building and phenomenology.
Motivated by models of holographic technicolor, we discuss a four-site deconstructed Higgsless model with nontrivial wavefunction mixing. We compute the spectrum of the model, the electroweak triple gauge boson vertices, and, for brane-localized fermions, the electroweak parameters to O(M^2_W/M^2_rho). We discuss the conditions under which "S" vanishes (even for brane-localized fermions) and the (distinct but overlapping) conditions under which the phenomenologically interesting decay a_1 to W gamma is non-zero and suppressed by only one power of M_W/M_rho.
We introduce a minimal supersymmetric extension of a higgsless model for electroweak symmetry breaking in a warped extra dimension. In contrast to the non supersymmetric version, our model naturally contains a candidate for cold dark matter. No KK-parity is required, because its stability is guaranteed by an R-parity. We discuss the regions in parameter that are compatible with the observed dark matter content of our universe and are allowed by electroweak precision measurements as well as direct searches.
We calculate the form of the corrections to the electroweak interactions in the class of Higgsless models which can be "deconstructed'' to a chain of SU(2) gauge groups adjacent to a chain of U(1) gauge groups, and with the fermions coupled to any single SU(2) group and to any single U(1) group along the chain. The primary advantage of our technique is that the size of corrections to electroweak processes can be directly related to the spectrum of vector bosons ("KK modes"). In Higgsless models, this spectrum is constrained by unitarity. Our methods also allow for arbitrary background 5-D geom…
We have performed a detailed Monte Carlo exploration of the parameter space for a warped Higgsless model of electroweak symmetry breaking in 5 dimensions. This model is based on the $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge group in an AdS$_5$ bulk with arbitrary gauge kinetic terms on both the Planck and TeV branes. Constraints arising from precision electroweak measurements and collider data are found to be relatively easy to satisfy. We show, however, that the additional requirement of perturbative unitarity up to the cut-off, $\simeq 10$ TeV, in $W_L^+W_L^-$ elastic scattering in the …
We present a one-loop calculation of the oblique S parameter within Higgsless models of electroweak symmetry breaking and analyze the phenomenological implications of the available electroweak precision data. We use the most general effective Lagrangian with at most two derivatives, implementing the chiral symmetry breaking SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R -> SU(2)_{L+R} with Goldstones, gauge bosons and one multiplet of vector and axial-vector massive resonance states. Using the dispersive representation of Peskin and Takeuchi and imposing the short-distance constraints dictated by the operator product expa…
In this talk, using deconstruction, we analyze the form of the corrections to the electroweak interactions in a large class of ``Higgsless'' models of electroweak symmetry breaking, allowing for arbitrary 5-D geometry, position-dependent gauge coupling, and brane kinetic energy terms. Many models considered in the literature, including those most likely to be phenomenologically viable, are in this class. By analyzing the asymptotic behavior of the correlation function of gauge currents at high momentum, we extract the exact form of the relevant correlation functions at tree-level and compute t…
We consider the four-site Higgsless model, which predicts the existence of four charged and two neutral extra gauge bosons, $W_{1,2}^\pm$ and $Z_{1,2}$. In contrast to other Higgsless models, characterized by fermiophobic extra gauge bosons, here sizeable fermion-boson couplings are allowed by the electroweak precision data. We thus analyse the prospects of detecting the new predicted particles in the mostly favored Drell-Yan channel at the LHC.
We investigate unitarity of $W^+W^-$ scattering in the context of theory space models of the form $U(1)\times {[SU(2)]}^N\times SU(2)_{N+1}$, which are broken down to $U(1)_{EM}$ by non-linear $Σ$ fields, without the presence of a physical Higgs Boson. By allowing the couplings of the U(1) and the final $SU(2)_{N+1}$ to vary, we can fit the $W$ and $Z$ masses, and we find that the coefficient of the term in the amplitude that grows as $E^2/m_W^2$ at high energies is suppressed by a factor of $(N+1)^{-2}$. In the $N+1\to\infty$ limit the model becomes a 5-dimensional SU(2) gauge theory defined …
A modified formulation of the Electroweak Model with 3-dimensional spherical geometry in the target space is suggested. The {\it free} Lagrangian in the spherical field space along with the standard gauge field Lagrangian form the full Higgsless Lagrangian of the model, whose second order terms reproduce the same experimentally verified fields with the same masses as the Standard Electroweak Model. The vector bosons masses are automatically generated, so there is no need in special mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking. The limiting case of the modified Higgsless Electroweak Model, which …
Higgsless models with fermions whose SU(2) properties are "ideally delocalized," such that the fermion's probability distribution is appropriately related to the W boson wavefunction, have been shown to minimize deviations in precision electroweak parameters. As contributions to the S parameter vanish to leading order, current constraints on these models arise from limits on deviations in multi-gauge-boson vertices. We compute the form of the triple and quartic gauge boson vertices in these models and show that these constraints provide lower bounds only of order a few hundred GeV on the masse…
We study the Drell-Yan production of heavy vector and axial-vector states of generic Higgsless models at hadron colliders. We analyse in particular the l+l-, WZ, and three SM gauge boson final states. In the l+l- case we show how present Tevatron data restricts the allowed parameter space of these models. The two and three gauge boson final states (especially WZ, WWZ, and WZZ) are particularly interesting in view of the LHC, especially for light axial-vector masses, and could shed more light on the role of spin-1 resonances in the electroweak precision tests.
In this note we compute the flavor-dependent chiral-logarithmic corrections to the decay Z to b bbar in the three site Higgsless model. We compute these corrections diagrammatically in the "gaugeless" limit in which the electroweak couplings vanish. We also compute the chiral-logarithmic corrections to the decay Z to b bbar using an RGE analysis in effective field theory, and show that the results agree. In the process of this computation, we compute the form of the chiral current in the gaugeless limit of the three-site model, and consider the generalization to the N-site case. We elucidate t…
In a generic 'universal' theory of electroweak symmetry breaking, non fine-tuned heavy new physics affects the low-energy data through four parameters, which include and properly extend the generally insufficient S and T. Only by adding the LEP2 data to the global electroweak fit, can all these four form factors be determined and deviations from the SM be strongly constrained. Several of the recently proposed models (little Higgs, gauge bosons in extra dimensions or Higgsless models in 5D) are recognized to be 'universal' in a straightforward way after a proper definition of the effective vect…
We calculate the tree-level oblique corrections to electroweak precision observables generated in higgless models of electroweak symmetry breaking with a 5D SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_{B-L} gauge group on a warped background. In the absence of brane induced kinetic terms (and equal left and right gauge couplings) we find the S parameter to be ~1.15, while T,U~0, as in technicolor theories. Planck brane induced kinetic terms and unequal left-right couplings can lower S, however for sufficiently low values of S tree-level unitarity will be lost. A kinetic term localized on the TeV brane for SU(2)_…
We consider a four site Higgsless model based on the $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_1\times SU(2)_2\times U(1)_Y$ gauge symmetry, which predicts two neutral and four charged extra gauge bosons, $Z_{1,2}$ and $W^\pm_{1,2}$. We compute the properties of the new particles, and derive indirect and direct limits on their masses and couplings from LEP and Tevatron data. In contrast to other Higgsless models, characterized by fermiophobic extra gauge bosons, here sizeable fermion-boson couplings are allowed by the electroweak precision data. The prospects of detecting the new predicted particles in the favoure…
We present a 5D gauge theory in warped space based on a bulk SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_(B-L) gauge group where the gauge symmetry is broken by boundary conditions. The symmetry breaking pattern and the mass spectrum resembles that in the standard model (SM). To leading order in the warp factor the rho parameter and the coupling of the Z (or equivalently the S-parameter) are as in the SM, while corrections are expected at the level of a percent. From the AdS/CFT point of view the model presented here can be viewed as the AdS dual of a (walking) technicolor-like theory, in the sense that it is th…
Recently, ``Higgsless'' models of electroweak symmetry breaking have been proposed. Based on compactified five-dimensional gauge theories, these models achieve unitarity of electroweak boson self-interactions through the exchange of a tower of massive vector bosons rather than the exchange of a scalar Higgs boson. In this paper, using deconstruction, we analyze the form of the corrections to the electroweak interactions in a large class of these models, allowing for arbitrary 5-D geometry, position-dependent gauge coupling, and brane kinetic energy terms. We show that many models considered in…
We propose a mechanism of Higgsless gauge symmetry breaking with a large mass hierarchy. We consider a 5D gauge theory on an orbifold $S^1/Z_2$. The gauge symmetry is broken by orbifolding and also nontrivial boundary conditions at fixed points. All 4D modes which survive at low energies are found to be localized around fixed points. Supersymmetry plays an important role in our mechanism. The tree-level unitarity in our model is briefly discussed.
We study a theory of electroweak symmetry breaking without a Higgs boson, recently suggested by Csaki et al. The theory is formulated in 5D warped space with the gauge bosons and matter fields propagating in the bulk. In the 4D dual picture, the theory appears as the standard model without a Higgs field, but with an extra gauge group G which becomes strong at the TeV scale. The strong dynamics of G breaks the electroweak symmetry, giving the masses for the W and Z bosons and the quarks and leptons. We study corrections in 5D which are logarithmically enhanced by the large mass ratio between th…
Motivated by recent works on ``Higgsless theories,'' I discuss an $SU(2)_0\times SU(2)^{N}\times U(1)$ gauge theory with arbitrary bifundamental (or custodial SU(2) preserving) symmetry breaking between the gauge subgroups and with ordinary matter transforming only under the U(1) and $SU(2)_0$. When the couplings, $g_j$, of the other SU(2)s are very large, this reproduces the standard model at the tree level. I calculate the $W$ and $Z$ masses and other electroweak parameters in a perturbative expansion in $1/g_j^2$, and give physical interpretations of the results in a mechanical analog built…
We study the flavor structure in the three site Higgsless model. In this model, the gauge bosons and fermions have heavy partners, coming from the Kaluza-Klein excitation in the dimensional deconstruction picture. The yukawa couplings are introduced in a way to minimize the flavor chaning neutral current in the light sector at the tree level. Due to the flavor mixing between the light and the heavy partner fields, new effects on FCNC's appear at one-loop level. As an example of such FCNC processes, we calculate the contribution to the b -> s gamma amplitude in the three site Higgsless model. I…
In this paper we compute the the one-loop chiral logarithmic corrections to the S and T parameters in a highly deconstructed Higgsless model with only three sites. In addition to the electroweak gauge bosons, this model contains a single extra triplet of vector states (which we denote ρ^{\pm} and ρ^0), rather than an infinite tower of "KK" modes. We compute the corrections to S and T in 'tHooft-Feynman gauge, including the ghost, unphysical Goldstone-boson, and appropriate "pinch" contributions required to obtain gauge-invariant results for the one-loop self-energy functions. We demonstrate th…
Topological quantum interactions, namely Chern-Simons terms and global Wess-Zumino terms, arise naturally in theories with extra dimensions of space compactified on orbifolds. If the extra dimensions become manifest at the TeV scale, experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) could observe signatures of topological interactions. Decays of Kaluza-Klein excitations of neutral electroweak gauge bosons into pairs of neutral Standard Model gauge bosons, ZZ and Z+photon, would provide a clean signature, since such decays do not occur at tree level. In this paper, we investigate the prospects for…
Recently Barbieri, et al. have introduced a formalism to express the deviations of electroweak interactions from their standard model forms in "universal" theories, i.e. theories in which the corrections due to new physics can be expressed solely by modifications to the two-point correlation function of electroweak gauge currents of fermions. The parameters introduced by these authors are defined by the properties of the correlation functions at zero momentum, and differ from the quantities calculated by examining the on-shell properties of the electroweak gauge bosons. In this letter we discu…
Recently, Higgsless models have proven to be viable alternatives to the Standard Model (SM) and supersymmetric models in describing the breaking of the electroweak symmetry. Whether extra-dimensional in nature or their deconstructed counterparts, the physical spectrum of these models typically consists of ``towers'' of massive vector gauge bosons which carry the same quantum numbers as the SM W and Z. In this paper, we calculate the one-loop, chiral-logarithmic corrections to the S and T parameters from the lightest (i.e. SM) and the next-to-lightest gauge bosons using a novel application of t…
We study the phenomenological consequences of a four site Higgsless model based on the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_1 x SU(2)_2 x U(1)_Y gauge symmetry, which predicts two neutral and four charged extra gauge bosons, Z_{1,2} and W_{1,2}. The model represents an extension of the minimal three site version (or BESS model), largely investigated in the literature, which includes three heavy vector bosons. We compute the properties of the new particles, and derive indirect and direct limits on their masses and couplings from LEP and Tevatron data and from the perturbative unitarity requirements. In contrast to …
We examine the phenomenology of a warped 5-dimensional model based on SU(2)$_L \times$ SU(2)$_R \times$ U(1)$_{B-L}$ model which implements electroweak symmetry breaking through boundary conditions, without the presence of a Higgs boson. We use precision electroweak data to constrain the general parameter space of this model. Our analysis includes independent $L$ and $R$ gauge couplings, radiatively induced UV boundary gauge kinetic terms, and all higher order corrections from the curvature of the 5-d space. We show that this setup can be brought into good agreement with the precision electrow…
A large class of deconstructed Higgsless model is known to satisfy the tree-level experimental bounds on the electroweak precision parameters. In particular, an approximate custodial symmetry insures that the tree-level $ρ$ parameter is exactly one, for arbitrary values of the model parameters, and regardless of fermion delocalization. In this note we expand on previous work by considering the fermionic one-loop contributions to $ρ$, which are essentially due to loops with top and bottom modes. We analyze the dependence on the number $N$ of internal SU(2) sites in models with a ``flat backgrou…
Warped extra dimensions provide a new playground to study electroweak brea-king and the nature of the higgs field. In this paper we reanalyze the electroweak observables in theories with one extra dimension and a completely general warp factor. We demonstrate that, regardless of the 5D background, SU(2)_R is needed in order to avoid excessive contributions to the T parameter. For higgsless theories cancelations between different contributions to the S parameter are needed.
We present a new complete analysis of the electroweak precision observables within the recently proposed 4-site Higgsless model, which is based on the SU(2)_L x SU(2)_1 x SU(2)_2 x U(1)_Y gauge symmetry and predicts six extra gauge bosons, W_{1,2} and Z_{1,2}. Within the epsilon_i (i=1,2,3,b) parametrization, we compute for the first time the EWPT bounds via a complete numerical algorithm going beyond commonly used approximations. Both epsilon_{1,3} impose strong constraints. Hence, it is mandatory to consider them jointly when extracting EWPT bounds and to fully take in to account the correla…
We examine a warped Higgsless $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times U(1)_{B-L}$ model in 5--$d$ with IR(TeV)--brane kinetic terms. It is shown that adding a brane term for the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge field does not affect the scale ($\sim 2-3$ TeV) where perturbative unitarity in $W_L^+ W_L^- \to W_L^+ W_L^-$ is violated. This term could, however, enhance the agreement of the model with the precision electroweak data. In contrast, the inclusion of a kinetic term corresponding to the $SU(2)_D$ custodial symmetry of the theory delays the unitarity violation in $W_L^\pm$ scattering to energy scales of $\sim 6-…
In five dimensional models of Higgsless electroweak symmetry breaking, tree level unitarity in gauge boson scattering is restored by the exchange of gauge boson Kaluza-Klein modes instead of a Higgs boson. Unitarity of scattering amplitudes involving top quarks requires also the Kaluza-Klein modes of the third family quarks. It is shown that the relevant unitarity cancellations are consistent with gauge symmetry breaking by boundary conditions. These results are used to constrain the couplings of the top quark to Kaluza-Klein modes and the implications for collider phenomenology are discussed.
We consider extra dimensional descriptions of models where there are two separate strongly interacting sectors contributing to electroweak symmetry breaking (``topcolor'' type models). In the extra dimensional picture there would be two separate (anti-de Sitter) bulks meeting on the Planck brane, with each bulk having its own corresponding IR (TeV) brane. Sources for electroweak symmetry breaking can then be localized on both of these IR branes, while the different generations of fermions may be separated from each other. We describe the modes propagating in such a setup, and consider the case…
We discuss the stabilization of the scalar sector, including the radion, in the gauge model with one universal extra dimension, within Higgs and Higgsless scenarios. The stabilization occurs at the one-loop level, through the fermionic contribution to the effective potential; in the Higgs case, for stabilization to take place the bosonic contribution must be balanced by the fermionic one, hence the scales of these two cannot differ too much. However, there is no need for (softly broken) supersymmetry to achieve the stabilization - it can be arranged for a reasonably wide range of couplings and…
We analyze the spectrum and properties of a highly-deconstructed Higgsless model with only three sites. Such a model contains sufficient complexity to incorporate interesting physics issues related to fermion masses and electroweak observables, yet remains simple enough that it could be encoded in a Matrix Element Generator program for use with Monte Carlo simulations. The gauge sector of this model is equivalent to that of the BESS model; the new physics of interest here lies in the fermion sector. We analyze the form of the fermion Yukawa couplings required to produce the ideal fermion deloc…
We discuss the fermion couplings in a four dimensional SU(2) linear moose model by allowing for direct couplings between the left-handed fermions on the boundary and the gauge fields in the internal sites. This is realized by means of a product of non linear $σ$-model scalar fields which, in the continuum limit, is equivalent to a Wilson line. The effect of these new non local couplings is a contribution to the $ε_3$ parameter which can be of opposite sign with respect to the one coming from the gauge fields along the string. Therefore, with some fine tuning, it is possible to satisfy the cons…
We show the computational procedure of the renormalization of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian (the 4D Higgsless standard model), and provide one simplified version of its one-loop renormalization group equations, which we demonstrate its simplicity and reliability. By analyzing the solutions of the one-loop renormalization group equations of the electroweak chiral Lagrangian, we study the parameter space of the precision test parameters at ultraviolet cutoff with the current low energy experimental constraints. We find that the region of the permitted parameter space can be greatly amplified…
We consider various constraints on Higgsless models of electroweak symmetry breaking based on a bulk SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R x U(1)_{B-L} gauge group in warped space. First we show that the S parameter which is positive if fermions are localized on the Planck brane can be lowered (or made vanishing) by changing the localization of the light fermions. If the wave function of the light fermions is almost flat their coupling to the gauge boson KK modes will be close to vanishing, and therefore contributions to the S parameter will be suppressed. At the same time the experimental bounds on such Z' and W…
We study the LHC signatures of new gauge bosons in the gauge-invariant minimal Higgsless model. It predicts an extra pair of W_1 and Z_1 bosons which can be as light as ~400GeV and play a key role in the delay of unitarity violation. We analyze the W_1 signals in pp --> W_0Z_0Z_0 --> jj4\ell and pp --> jj W_0Z_0 --> jj3\ellνprocesses at the LHC, including the complete electroweak and QCD backgrounds. We reveal the complementarity between these two channels for discovering the W_1 boson, and demonstrate the LHC discovery potential over the full range of allowed W_1 mass.
We revisit the electroweak precision tests for Higgsless models of strong EWSB. We use the Vector Meson Dominance approach and express S and T via couplings characterizing vector and axial spin-1 resonances of the strong sector. These couplings are constrained by the elastic unitarity and by requiring a good UV behavior of various formfactors. We pay particular attention to the one-loop contribution of resonances to T (beyond the chiral log), and to how it can improve the fit. We also make contact with the recent studies of Conformal Technicolor. We explain why the second Weinberg sum rule nev…
The mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) will be directly scrutinized soon at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We analyze the LHC potential to look for new vector bosons associated with the EWSB sector. We present a possible model independent approach to search for these new spin--1 resonances. We show that the analyses of the processes pp --> l^+ l^- Emiss_T, l^\pm j j Emiss_T, l^\pm l^+ l^- Emiss_T, and l^+ l^- j j (with l=e or μand j=jet) have a large reach at the LHC and can lead to the discovery or exclusion of many EWSB scenarios such as Higgsless models.
Both Little Higgs and Higgsless Models provide new windows into the mysteries of electroweak symmetry breaking and lead to testable predictions at present and future colliders. Here we give a quick overview of three papers submitted to the ICHEP2004 meeting on these subjects.
It is well known that technicolor models in which the electroweak symmetry is broken by QCD-like strong dynamics at the TeV scale generally predict unacceptably large corrections to low-energy observables. We investigate the models of electroweak symmetry breaking by strong dynamics in which the gauge symmetry is extended to include an arbitrary number of additional SU(2) and U(1) factors. This class of models includes the deconstructed version of the recently proposed five-dimensional "Higgsless" scenario. We conclude that the additional structure present in these theories does not suppress t…
We consider a five dimensional SU(2) gauge theory with fermions in the bulk and with additional SU(2) and U(1) kinetic terms on the branes. The electroweak breaking is obtained by boundary conditions. After deconstruction, fermions in the bulk are eliminated by using their equations of motion. In this way Standard Model fermion mass terms and direct couplings to the internal gauge bosons of the moose are generated. The presence of these new couplings gives a new contribution to the epsilon_3 parameter in addition to the gauge boson term. This allows the possibility of a cancellation between th…
We study scattering of the electroweak gauge bosons in 5D warped models. Within two different models we determine the precise manner in which the Higgs boson and the vector resonances ensure the unitarity of longitudinal vector boson scattering. We identify three separate scales that determine the dynamics of the scattering process in all cases. For a quite general background geometry of 5D, these scales can be linked to a simple functional of the warp factor. The models smoothly interpolate between a `composite' Higgs limit and a Higgsless limit. By holographic arguments, these models provide…
We review different avenues of electroweak symmetry breaking explored over the years. This constitutes a timely exercise as the world's largest and the highest energy particle accelerator, namely, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN near Geneva, has started running whose primary mission is to find the Higgs or some phenomena that mimic the effects of the Higgs, i.e. to unravel the mysteries of electroweak phase transition. In the beginning, we discuss the Standard Model Higgs mechanism. After that we review the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Then we take up thre…
