We present the first results of a search for Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) in the DEEP2 spectroscopic database that uses a search technique that is different from but complementary to traditional narrowband imaging surveys. We have visually inspected ~20% of the available DEEP2 spectroscopic data and have found nine high-quality LAEs with clearly asymmetric line profiles and an additional ten objects of lower quality, some of which may also be LAEs. Our survey is most sensitive to LAEs at z=4.4-4.9 and that is indeed where all but one of our high-quality objects are found. We find the number density of our spectroscopically-discovered LAEs to be consistent with those found in narrowband imaging searches. The combined, averaged spectrum of our nine high-quality objects is well fit by a two-component model, with a second, lower-amplitude component redshifted by ~420 km/s with respect to the primary Lyman-alpha line, consistent with large-scale outflows from these objects. We conclude by discussing the advantages and future prospects of blank-sky spectroscopic surveys for high-z LAEs.
We report an ultra-high-resolution simulation that follows evolution from the earliest stages of galaxy formation through the period of dynamical relaxation. The bubble structures of gas revealed in our simulation ($< 3\times 10^8$ years) resemble closely the high-redshift Lyman $α$ emitters (LAEs). After $10^9$ years these bodies are dominated by stellar continuum radiation and look like the Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) known as the high-redshift star-forming galaxies at which point the abundance of elements appears to be solar. After $1.3\times10^{10}$ years, these galaxies resemble present-d…
The Lyman-alpha emitters found at z ~ 4.5 by the Large Area Lyman Alpha (LALA) survey have high equivalent widths in the Lyman-alpha line, which can be produced by either narrow-lined active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or by stellar populations with a very high proportion of young, massive stars. To investigate the AGN scenario, we obtained two deep Chandra exposures to study the X-ray nature of the Lyman-alpha emitters. The 172 ks deep Chandra image on the LALA Bootes field was presented in a previous paper (Malhotra et al. 2003), and in this paper we present a new Chandra deep exposure (174 ks) o…
We have identified an obvious and strong large scale structure at redshift z=5.75 in a wide (31 by 33 arcminute) field, narrowband survey of the Chandra Deep Field South region. This structure is traced by 17 candidate Lyman alpha emitters, among which 12 are found in an 823nm filter (corresponding to Lyman alpha at z=5.77 +- 0.03) and 5 in an 815nm image (z=5.70 +- 0.03). The Lyman alpha emitters in both redshift bins are concentrated in one quadrant of the field. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field, Chandra Deep Field South, and GOODS-South fields all lie near the edge of this overdense region. Our …
We use a numerical simulation of cosmological reionization to estimate the likelihood of detecting Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies during the pre-reionization era. We show that it is possible to find galaxies even at z~9 that are barely affected by the dumping wing of the Gunn-Peterson absorption from the neutral IGM outside of their HII regions. The damping wing becomes rapidly more significant at z>9, but even at z>10 is it not inconceivable (although quite hard) to see a Lyman-alpha emission line from a star-forming galaxy.
Lyman alpha galaxies at high redshifts offer a powerful probe of both the formation of galaxies and the reionization of the intergalactic medium. Lyman alpha line emission is an efficient tool for identifying young galaxies at high redshift, because it is strong in systems with young stars and little or no dust-- properties expected in galaxies undergoing their first burst of star-formation. Lyman alpha galaxies also provide a robust test of the reionization epoch that is independent of Gunn-Peterson trough observations in quasar spectra and is better able to distinguish line center optical de…
We present models for dusty high-redshift Lyman alpha emitting galaxies by combining the Press-Schechter formalism with a treatment of inhomogeneous dust distribution inside galaxies. These models reproduce the surface density of emitters inferred from recent observations, and also agree with previous non-detections. Although a detailed determination of the individual model parameters is precluded by uncertainties, we find that (i) the dust content of primordial galaxies builds up in no more than 5x10^8 years, (ii) the galactic HII regions are inhomogeneous with a cloud covering factor of orde…
Narrow-band searches for Lyman alpha emission are an efficient way of identifying star-forming galaxies at high redshifts. We present Keck telescope spectra confirming redshifts z = 5.7 for three objects discovered in the Large Area Lyman Alpha (LALA) survey at Kitt Peak National Observatory. All three spectra show strong, narrow emission lines with the asymmetric profile that is characteristically produced in high redshift Lyman alpha emitters by preferential HI absorption in the blue wing of the line. These objects are undetected in deep Bw, V, R, and 6600A narrow-band images from the NOAO D…
The Lyman-alpha emitters found at z=4.5 and 5.7 by the Large Area Lyman Alpha (LALA) survey have high equivalent widths in the Lyman-alpha line. Such lines can be produced by narrow-lined active galactic nuclei (AGNs) or by stellar populations with a very high proportion of young, massive stars. To check for Type-II (i.e., narrow-lined) quasars, we obtained a deep X-ray image of 49 Lyman-alpha sources in a single field of the ACIS instrument on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. None of these sources were detected with a 3-sigma limiting X-ray luminosity of 2.9x10^{43} ergs/s. For comparison, the …
We report on the discovery of a bright Lyman alpha blob associated with the z=3 quasar SDSSJ124020.91+145535.6 which is also coincident with strong damped Lyman alpha absorption from a foreground galaxy (a so-called proximate damped Lyman alpha system; PDLA). The one dimensional spectrum acquired by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) shows a broad Lyman alpha emission line with a FWHM ~ 500 km/s and a luminosity of L_{Lya} = 3.9e43 erg/s superposed on the trough of the PDLA. Mechanisms for powering this large Lyman alpha luminosity are discussed. We argue against emission from HII regions in …
We have conducted a long slit search for low surface brightness Lyman-alpha emitters at redshift 2.67 < z < 3.75. A 92 hour long exposure with VLT/FORS2 down to a 1-sigma surface brightness detection limit of 8x10^-20 erg/cm2/s/sqarcsec yielded a sample of 27 single line emitters with fluxes of a few times 10^-18 erg/s/cm2. We present arguments that most objects are indeed Lyman-alpha. The large comoving number density, the large covering factor, dN/dz ~ 0.2-1, and the often extended Lyman-alpha emission suggest that the emitters be identified with the elusive host population of damped Lyman-a…
We present results from optical narrow-band lambda_c = 8150A ~ and Delta lambda = 120A) observations of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) fields, using Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. Using these narrow-band data, we then perform a survey of Lyman alpha Emitters (LAEs) at z~5.7. The LAE survey covers an area of approx 320 arcmin^2 and a co-moving volume of ~8.0 x 10^4 Mpc^3. We found a total of 10 (GOODS-N) and 4 (GOODS-S) LAE candidates at z~5.7. We perform a study of the spatial distribution, space density, and star formation properties of the LAEs at z~5.7.
Models are presented for the Lyman alpha emission of dusty high-redshift galaxies by combining the Press-Schechter formalism with a treatment of the inhomogeneous dust distribution inside galaxies. It is found that the amount of Lyman alpha radiation escaping from the galaxies strongly depends on the time over which the dust is produced through stellar activity, and on the ambient inhomogeneity of the HII regions that surround the ionizing OB stars. Good agreement is found with recent observations, as well as previous non-detections. Our models indicate that the dust content builds up in no mo…
We have detected Lyman-alpha emission from a damped Lyman-alpha system (DLA) that lies near the bright quasar HS1549+1919. The DLA has the same redshift as HS1549+1919 and was discovered in the spectrum of a faint QSO that lies 49" away (380 proper kpc). The emission line's luminosity, double-peaked profile, and small spatial separation from the DLA suggest that it may be fluorescent Lyman-alpha emission from gas that is absorbing the nearby QSO's radiation. If this is the case, our observations show that the DLA has a size of at least 1.5" and that the QSO's luminosity one million years ago w…
Lyman-alpha emission from galaxies should be suppressed completely or partially at redshifts beyond reionization. Without knowing the instrinsic properties of galaxies at z = 6.5, this attenuation is hard to infer in any one source, but can be infered from a comparison of luminosity functions of lyman-alpha emitters at redshifts just before and after reionization. We combine published surveys of widely varying depths and areas to construct luminosity functions at z=6.5 and 5.7, where the characteristic luminosity L_star and density phi_star are well constrained while the faint-end slope of the…
The Large Area Lyman Alpha survey has found ~ 150 Lyman-alpha emitters at z=4.5. While stellar models predict a maximum Lyman-alpha equivalent width (EW) of 240 angstrom, 60% of the Lyman-alpha emitters have EWs exceeding this value. We attempt to model the observed EW distribution by combining stellar population models with an extrapolation of Lyman break galaxy luminosity function at z=4, incorporating observational selection effects and Malmquist bias. To reproduce the high EWs seen in the sample we need to postulate a stellar initial mass function (IMF) with extreme slope alpha = 0.5 (inst…
We present new GHRS observations of Lyman alpha absorption lines associated with a group of galaxies towards the QSO 1545+2101. We have identified eight distinct Lyman alpha absorption features in the spectrum of QSO 1545+2101 at a mean redshift of z=0.2648 with a velocity dispersion of 163 km/s. A group of galaxies is detected in the vicinity of this QSO at a mean redshift of z=0.2645 and velocity dispersion 239 km/s. The identification of discrete absorption systems indicates that they arise in clouds of neutral hydrogen rather than in a diffuse intragroup medium. Our analysis suggests that …
We report a deficiency of luminous Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) with a large rest-frame equivalent width (EW_rest) of Lyman-alpha emission at z~5-6. Combining our spectroscopic sample of LBGs at z~5 and those from the literature, we found that luminous LBGs at z~5-6 generally show weak Lyman-alpha emissions, while faint LBGs show a wide range of Lyman-alpha EW_rest and tend to have strong (EW_rest >20A) Lyman-alpha emissions; i.e., there is a deficiency of strong Lyman-alpha emission in luminous LBGs. There seems to be a threshold UV luminosity for the deficiency; it is M_1400 = -21.5 \~ -21.0 …
Evidence is presented that the damped Lyman alpha absorption systems are the high-redshift (z > 3) progenitors of galaxy disks. I discuss kinematic evidence that the damped Lyman Alpha systems are rotating disks. I also discuss implications of the lack of metal-poor damped Lyman alpha systems with line width Delta v > 100 {\kms}. I then present new evidence stemming from correlations between element-abundance ratios and [Fe/H], which connects damped systems to the thick stellar disk of the Galaxy. I discuss the connections between damped Lyman alpha systems and Lyman break galaxies, and how [C…
Lyman alpha absorber correlations contain information about the underlying density distribution associated with a particular class of absorbers. As such, they provide an opportunity to independently measure the "bias" of the Lyman alpha forest, i.e. the relationship between HI column density and underlying dark matter density. In these proceedings we use hydrodynamic simulations to investigate whether the evolution of this bias is measurable from observable correlations. Unfortunately, the increasingly complex physics in the IGM at z<1 makes a direct measurement of the bias difficult. Neverthe…
The discovery of a z_abs = 0.0912 damped Lyman-alpha absorption-line system in the HST-FOS ultraviolet spectrum of the quasar OI 363 (0738+313) is reported. This is the lowest redshift quasar damped Lyman-alpha system known. Its neutral hydrogen column density is N(HI) = 1.5(+/- 0.2) E21 atoms/cm^2, which easily exceeds the classical criterion for damped Lyman-alpha of N(HI) greater than or equal to 2E20 atoms/cm^2. Remarkably, a z_abs = 0.2212 damped system with N(HI) = 7.9(+/- 1.4) E20 atoms/cm^2 has also been discovered in the same spectrum. In the past, the standard paradigm for damped Lym…
We report the discovery of a Lyman alpha emitting galaxy at z = 6.518. The single line was found in the 43 square arcmin VLT/FORS field by slitless spectroscopy limited to the atmospheric window at 9100 A (sampling Lya at 6.4 < z < 6.6). Its counterpart is undetected in a deep I band image and the line has an asymmetric appearance in a deeper follow-up spectrum. There are no plausible line identifications except for Lya with a flux of 1.9x10^-17 erg/s/cm2 and rest frame equivalent width > 80 A. The lower limit to the star formation rate density at z = 6.5 derived from our complete sample is 5x…
We present the clustering properties of 151 Lyman alpha emitting galaxies at z ~ 4.5 selected from the Large Area Lyman Alpha (LALA) survey. Our catalog covers an area of 36' x 36' observed with five narrowband filters. We assume that the angular correlation function w(theta) is well represented by a power law A_w = Theta^(-beta) with slope beta = 0.8, and we find A_w = 6.73 +/- 1.80. We then calculate the correlation length r_0 of the real-space two-point correlation function xi(r) = (r/r_0)^(-1.8) from A_w through the Limber transformation, assuming a flat, Lambda-dominated universe. Neglect…
We use new observations of very weak CIV absorption lines associated with high-redshift Lyman-alpha absorption systems to measure the high-redshift Lyman-alpha line two-point correlation function (TPCF). These very weak CIV absorption lines trace small-scale velocity structure that cannot be resolved by Lyman-alpha absorption lines. We find that (1) high-redshift Lyman-alpha absorption systems with N(HI) > 3.10^14 cm^{-2} are strongly clustered in redshift, (2) previous measurements of the Lyman-alpha line TPCF underestimated the actual clustering of the absorbers due to unresolved blending of…
The effective recombination coefficient, alpha_eff, is refined for optically thin cases. Radiation pressure in Lyman-alpha and HeII Lyman-alpha is calculated in terms of the number density and the mean free path. Pressure equilibrium between Lyman-alpha clouds and an adiabatically expanding inter-galactic medium is assumed, n_i T_i = n_c T_c. Numerical models of isothermal and adiabatic expanding Lyman-alpha forest clouds are presented, including evolving UV sources (QSOs), with various turn-on times z_on = 20, 10, and 5, and with q_0 = 1/2 in a matter-dominated Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Univ…
We derive the distribution of neutral and ionized gas in high redshift clouds which are optically thick to hydrogen ionizing radiation, using published data on Lyman-limit and Damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems in the redshift range 1.75 < z < 3.25. We assume that the distribution of the hydrogen total (HI+HII) column density in the absorbers follows a power law K N_H^{-alpha}, whereas the observed HI column density distribution deviates from a pure power law as a result of ionization from a background radiation field. Comparison of the models and observations give Maximum Likelihood soluti…
The Aim of our study is to understand the variety of observed Lyman-alpha (Lya) line profiles and strengths in Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and Lya emitters (LAEs), the physical parameters governing them, and hence deriving constraints on the gas and dust content and stellar populations of these objects. Using our 3D Lya radiation transfer code including gas and dust (Verhamme et al. 2006), we fit 11 LBGs from the FORS Deep Field with redshifts between 2.8 and 5 observed by Tapken et al. (2007). A simple geometry of a spherically expanding shell of HI is adopted. RESULTS : The variety of observ…
We summarise the results of a deep search for Lyman alpha emission from star-forming regions associated with damped Lyman alpha absorption systems and conclude that the Lyman alpha luminosity of high redshift galaxies is generally less than 10^(42) erg/s . We also present a newly discovered case, in the field of the QSO Q2059-360, where the emission is unusually strong, possibly because the damped system is close in redshift to the QSO.
Context: Ly-alpha-emitters have proven to be excellent probes of faint, star-forming galaxies in the high redshift universe. However, although the sample of known emitters is increasingly growing, their nature (e.g. stellar masses, ages, metallicities, star-formation rates) is still poorly constrained. Aims: We aim to study the nature of Ly-alpha-emitters, to find the properties of a typical Ly-alpha-emitting galaxy and to compare these properties with the properties of other galaxies at similar redshift, in particular Lyman-break galaxies. Methods: We have performed narrow-band imaging at the…
We explore empirical relations between three different populations of high-redshift galaxies and their hosting dark halos employing the halo model approach. Specifically we consider Lyman-break galaxies at z\sim4 and at z\sim5, and Lyman-Alpha emitters at z\simeq 4.86. We adopt a halo occupation function prescription to parameterize the properties of their hosting halos and the efficiency of halo-dependent star formation. We find that the two LBG samples are well described by the halo model with an appropriate HOF. We obtain constraints on properties of their hosting halos. A typical mass of h…
In this paper we investigate how well Planck and Lyman-Alpha forest data will be able to constrain the sum of the neutrino masses, and thus, in conjunction with flavour oscillation experiments, be able to determine the absolute masses of the neutrinos. It seems possible that Planck, together with a Lyman-Alpha survey, will be able to put pressure on an inverted hierarchial model for the neutrino masses. However, even for optimistic assumptions of the precision of future Lyman-Alpha datasets, it will not be possible to confirm a minimal-mass normal hierarchy.
We derive the luminosity function of high-redshift Lyman alpha emitting sources from a deep, blind, spectroscopic survey that utilized strong-lensing magnification by intermediate-redshift clusters of galaxies. We observed carefully selected regions near 9 clusters, consistent with magnification factors generally greater than 10 for the redshift range 4.5<z<6.7. Eleven emission-line candidates were located in the range 2.2<z<5.6 whose identification we justify as Lyman alpha, in most cases via further spectroscopic observations. The selection function we constructed for our survey takes into a…
Studies of damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems in quasar spectra are yielding very interesting results regarding the chemical evolution of these galaxies. We present some preliminary results from such a program.
We have carried out a search for Lyman alpha emission from galaxies at z~=2.4 over a field of 1200 sq. arcmin using the CFH12K camera at the CFHT and a custom medium band filter. The search has uncovered 58 candidates, corresponding to a completeness-corrected source density of ~0.07 sq. arcmin^-2. Our sources have red colors (B-I~=1.8) which imply either that a large fraction of the light is highly reddened and we are detecting Lyman alpha through special lines of sight, or that these objects contain an underlying older stellar population. While for each individual object we cannot discrimina…
In order to study the origin of the strong Lyman-alpha emission of high-redshift starburst galaxies we observed and modeled the emission of the z = 3.304 galaxy FDF-4691 (rest-frame EW = 103 Angstroem). The observations show that FDF-4691 is a young starburst galaxy with a (for this redshift) typical metallicity. The broad, double-peaked profile of the Lyman-alpha emission line can be explained assuming a highly turbulent emission region in the inner part of the starburst galaxy, and a surrounding extended shell of low-density neutral gas with a normal dust/gas ratio and with Galactic dust pro…
The last few years have seen a dramatic improvement in our understanding of the origin of Lyman alpha absorption systems. Hydrodynamic numerical simulations of cold dark matter dominated universes have shown that the many properties of the Lyman alpha absorption systems can be explained by a photoionized, space-filling, intergalactic medium. Lyman alpha lines offer promising probes of the photoionizing background, the amplitude of the mass fluctuations at high redshift and the evolution of the equation of state of the intergalactic medium.
We present the results of an intermediate resolution (~2 angstrom) spectroscopy of a sample of 37 candidate Lyman alpha blobs and emitters at redshift z=3.1 using the DEIMOS spectrograph on the 10 m Keck telescope. The emission lines are detected for all the 37 objects and have variety in their line profiles. The Lyman alpha velocity widths (FWHM) of the 28 objects with higher quality spectra, measured by fitting a single Gaussian profile, are in the range of 150 - 1700 km/s and correlate with the Lyman alpha spatial extents. All the 12 Lyman alpha blobs (>16 arcsec^2) have large velocity widt…
We made a narrowband NB973 (bandwidth of 200A at 9755A) imaging of the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) and found two z=7 Lyman alpha emitter (LAE) candidates down to NB973=24.9. Carrying out deep follow-up spectroscopy, we identified one of them as a real z=6.96 LAE. This has shown that galaxy formation was in progress just 750 Myr after the Big Bang. Meanwhile, the Lyman alpha line luminosity function of LAE is known to decline from z=5.7 to 6.6 in the SDF. L* at z=6.6 is 40-60% of that at z=5.7. We also confirm that the number density of z=7 LAE is only 17% of the density at z=6.6 comparing the late…
HST imaging and slitless spectroscopy are used to examine where the strong Lyman alpha emission escapes from the interstellar medium in the starburst galaxy Mkn 357. An H-alpha image shows that the ionized gas is mostly in a global wind, rather than associated with the individual star-forming regions seen in the optical and UV continuum. The Lyman alpha emission comes predominantly from the northwest side of the wind structure spatially, and shows a significant redshift relative to the optical lines. Both of these properties are signatures of seeing the line photons backscattered from the far …
Lyman-alpha absorption is a prominent cosmological tool for probing both galactic halos and the intergalactic medium at high redshift. We consider a variety of sources that can be used as the Lyman-alpha emitters for this purpose. Among these sources, we argue that quasars are the best probes of the evolution of massive halos, while gamma-ray bursts represent the cleanest sources for studying the reionization of the intergalactic medium.
Damped Lyman-alpha absorption systems found in the spectra of high redshift quasars are believed to trace the interstellar gas in high redshift galaxies. In this paper, we study the elemental abundances of C, N, O, Al, Si, S, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Zn in a sample of 14 damped Lyman-alpha systems using high quality echelle spectra of quasars obtained with the 10m Keck telescope. These abundances are combined with similar measurements in the literature in order to investigate the chemical evolution of damped Lyman-alpha galaxies in the redshift range 0.7<z<4.4. Among the things investigated are: th…
Damped Lyman-alpha systems seen in spectra of background quasars are generally thought to represent high redshift counterparts of present-day galaxies. We summarize observations of heavy element abundances in damped Lyman-alpha systems. The results of a systematic search for CO and C II* absorption in 17 damped Lyman-alpha systems are also presented using observations obtained with the 10m Keck telescopes. The latter provides a useful constraint on the expected strength of [C II] 158 micron emission from damped Lyman-alpha galaxies. It is hoped that these results will be useful for planning fu…
We present the results of a search for Lyman-alpha emission galaxies at z~ 5.7 in the FORS Deep Field. The objective of this study is to improve the faint end of the luminosity function of high-redshift Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies and to derive properties of intrinsically faint Lyman-alpha emission galaxies in the young universe. Using FORS2 at the ESO VLT and a set of special interference filters, we identified candidates for high-redshift Lyman-alpha galaxies. We then used FORS2 in spectroscopic mode to verify the identifications and to study their spectral properties. The narrow-band phot…
We use the redshift evolution of the lyman-alpha forest mean transmitted flux at z>2.5 to infer the evolution of the intensity of the ionizing background, using theoretical predictions for the density distribution of the intergalactic gas giving rise to the lyman-alpha forest. The proper background intensity declines gradually with redshift, decreasing by a factor \sim 3 between z=3 and z=5. The gravitational structure formation theory of the lyman-alpha forest implies that, given the observed mean transmitted flux of \bar{F}=0.1 in the highest redshift quasar (with a mean lyman-alpha forest r…
We review the history and the current status of the understanding of the processes that regulate Lyman alpha emission from star-forming galaxies. We present some of the most recent results of our study to image local starburst galaxies in the Lyman alpha emission line using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. Particular attention is dedicated to our study of the low-metallicity, dust-poor Blue Compact Galaxy ESO338-IG04. We discuss some of our local observational results with reference to the interpretation of results of high-redshift Lyman alpha surveys and recent s…
We describe and model high velocity (~15,000 km/s) Lyman alpha and Balmer alpha emission from supernova remnant 1987A seen in September and October 1997 with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. Part of this emission comes from a reverse shock located at ~75% of the radius of the inner boundary of the inner circumstellar ring and confined within 30 degrees of the equatorial plane. Departure from axisymmetry in the Lyman alpha and Balmer alpha emission correlates with that seen in nonthermal radio emission and reveals an asymmetry in the circumstellar gas distribution. We also see diffuse …
In this work, observational evidence for the connection between low column density Lyman-alpha absorbers and large-scale structure traced by gas-rich galaxies is investigated. The HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS) galaxy catalogue is cross-correlated with known low redshift, low column density Lyman-alpha absorbers from the literature. The absorber-galaxy cross-correlation function shows that on scales from 1 to 10 h^-1 Mpc, absorbers are imbedded in halos with masses similar to that of galaxy groups. This statistical evidence suggests that galaxy groups could be the dominant environment of lo…
We present spectroscopic observations obtained with the FORS1 instrument on the ESO VLT under good seeing conditions of the radio-quiet z_em = 3.04 quasar Q1205-30 and its associated extended Lyman-alpha emission. The extended Lyman-alpha emission was originally found in a deep narrow band image targeting a z_abs = z_em Lyman-limit system in the spectrum of the QSO. Using spectral point-spread function fitting to subtract the QSO spectrum, we clearly detect the extended Lyman-alpha emission as well as two foreground galaxies at small impact parameters (2.12 +- 0.04 and 2.77 +- 0.07 arcsec). Th…
We propose a new model for the extended Ly alpha blobs found recently at high redshift z ~ 3. The observational properties of these blobs are; 1) the observed Ly alpha luminosities are ~ 10^{43} h^{-2} ergs s^{-1}, 2) they appear elongated morphologically, 3) their sizes amount to ~ 100 kpc, 4) the observed line widths amount to ~ 1000 km s^{-1}, and 5) they are not associated with strong radio-continuum sources. All these observational properties seem to be explained in terms of galactic winds driven by successive supernova explosions shortly after the initial burst of massive star formation …
We investigate the formation of the H I Lyman-alpha and Lyman-beta lines in an equatorial coronal streamer. Particular attention is paid to frequency redistribution for the scattering of the incident radiation. The properties of the spectral lines are studied. The coronal model is given by a global 2.5-D three fluid solar wind model with alpha particles. The emergent intensities and line profiles are calculated from the solution of the statistical equilibrium and radiative transfer equations for an hydrogen atom with 11 energy levels under non local thermodynamic equilibrium. The formation of …
We carried out a target survey for Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) around QSO SDSS J0211-0009 at z=4.87. The deep and wide broadband and narrowband imaging simultaneously revealed the perspective structure of these two high-z populations. The LBGs without Ly-alpha emission form a filamentary structure including the QSO, while the LAEs are distributed around the QSO but avoid it within a distance of ~4.5Mpc. On the other hand, we serendipitously discovered a protocluster with a significant concentration of LBGs and LAEs where no strongly UV ionizing source such as a …
The high redshift radiogalaxy 1243+036 (z=3.6) presents an asymmetric Lyman alpha profile of FWHM 1550 km/s as measured by van Ojik et al. We propose that the blue asymmetry in the Lyman alpha profile is not due to narrow absorption dips but consists of narrow emission peaks. We interpret the blueshifted peaks near -1130, -850 and -550 km/s (relative to the peak of full profile) as being the result of Fermi acceleration of Lyman alpha produced by jet-induced star formation in the wake of a 300 km/s shock. This shock would be caused by the deflection of the radio-jet at the observed position of…
In the WMAP era of high precision cosmology an accurate determination of the matter power spectrum from lyman-alpha forest data becomes crucial. When combining the matter power spectrum derived from CMB experiments with that inferred from lyman-alpha absorption an evidence for a running spectral index and a primordial index n < 1 arises (Verde et al. 2003). In this talk, I will describe some results obtained from a sample of 27 high resolution and high signal-to-noise quasar spectra (the LUQAS sample) and I will address possible systematic errors that can affect the estimate of the flux power …
We present a new technique for detecting structure on Mpc scales in the Lyman-alpha forest. The technique is easy to apply in practice since it does not involve absorption line fitting but is rather based on the statistics of the transmitted flux. It identifies and assesses the statistical significance of regions of over- or underdense Lyman-alpha absorption and is fairly insensitive to the quality of the data. Using extensive simulations we demonstrate that the new method is significantly more sensitive to the detection of large-scale structure in the Lyman-alpha forest than a traditional two…
In recent years, a remarkably simple physical picture of the Lyman-alpha forest has emerged, which allows detailed predictions to be made and turns the forest into a powerful probe of cosmology. We point out ways in which such a picture can be tested observationally, and explore three areas in which the Lyman-alpha forest can yield valuable constraints: the reionization history, the primordial mass power spectrum and the cosmological constant or its variants. The possibility of combining with other high redshift observations, such as the Lyman-break galaxy surveys, to provide consistency check…
Observations of the powerful radio galaxy 1138-262 at z=2.2 suggest that this galaxy is a massive galaxy in the center of a forming cluster. We have imaged the field of 1138-262 with the Very Large Telescope in a narrow band encompassing the redshifted Lyman alpha emission. We detect 34 probable line emitters in the 6'x6' field. These are candidate Lyman alpha emitting galaxies in the supposed cluster. The observations also reveal that the radio galaxy is enclosed by a very extended Lyman alpha halo (160 kpc).
We have calculated FeII emission line strengths for Active Galactic Nuclei Broad-Line Regions using precise radiative transfer and Iron Project atomic data. We improve the treatment of all previously considered excitation mechanisms for the FeII emission, continuum fluorescence, collisional excitation, fluorescence by self-overlap among the iron lines, and fluorescent excitation by Lyman-alpha. We demonstrate that Lyman-alpha fluorescence is of fundamental importance in determining the strength of the FeII emission. In addition to enhancing the ultraviolet and optical FeII flux, Lyman-alpha fl…
We report a quantitative study of the escape of Lyman-alpha photons from an inhomogeneous optically thick medium that mimics the structure of damped Lyman-alpha absorbers. Modeling the optically thick disk with 3 components (massive stars and HII regions, dust, and neutral hydrogen), we study the resulting emission line profile that may arise near the extended damped absorption profile.
Measurements of element abundances in damped Lyman alpha systems are providing new means to investigate the chemical evolution of galaxies, particularly at early times. We review progress in this area, concentrating on recent efforts to extend the range of existing surveys to both higher and lower redshifts.
We explore the onset of star formation in the early Universe, exploiting the observations of high-redshift Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) and Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs), in the framework of the galaxy formation scenario elaborated by Granato et al. (2004) already successfully tested against the wealth of data on later evolutionary stages. Complementing the model with a simple, physically plausible, recipe for the evolution of dust attenuation in metal poor galaxies we reproduce the luminosity functions (LFs) of LBGs and of LAEs at different redshifts. This recipe yields a much faster increase wi…
