In this paper we investigate how well Planck and Lyman-Alpha forest data will be able to constrain the sum of the neutrino masses, and thus, in conjunction with flavour oscillation experiments, be able to determine the absolute masses of the neutrinos. It seems possible that Planck, together with a Lyman-Alpha survey, will be able to put pressure on an inverted hierarchial model for the neutrino masses. However, even for optimistic assumptions of the precision of future Lyman-Alpha datasets, it will not be possible to confirm a minimal-mass normal hierarchy.
Using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations we measure the mean transmitted flux in the Lyman alpha forest for quasar sightlines that pass near a foreground quasar. We find that the trend of absorption with pixel-quasar separation distance can be fitted using a simple power law form including the usual correlation function parameters r_{0} and γso that (<F(r)> = \sum exp(-tau_eff*(1+(r/r_{0})^(-γ)))). From the simulations we find the relation between r_{0} and quasar mass and formulate this as a way to estimate quasar host dark matter halo masses, quantifying uncertainties due to cosmological …
The reionization of hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM) is a crucial landmark in the history of the universe, but the processes through which it occurs remain mysterious. In particular, recent numerical and analytic work suggest that reionization by stellar sources is driven by large-scale density fluctuations and must be inhomogeneous on scales of many comoving Mpc. We examine the prospects for constraining the topology of neutral and ionized gas through Lyman-alpha absorption of high-redshift sources. One method is to search for gaps in the Gunn-Peterson absorption troughs of luminous…
At redshifts beyond z>6, as the mean fraction of neutral hydrogen x_HI in the intergalactic medium (IGM) increases, the line flux of Lyman alpha (Lya) emitters can be significantly suppressed, which can result in a decrease in the observed number of emitters at a given Lya flux. However, cosmological HII regions surrounding the Lya emitting galaxies alleviate these effects. We use simple models of the Lya line suppression that incorporate the presence of HII regions to predict the overall effect of the Lya absorption on the Lya luminosity function. We find, in agreement with other recent studi…
We search for OVI absorption in a Keck HIRES spectrum of the z=3.62 quasar Q1422+231. Comparison of CIV measurements to cosmological simulations shows that \lya forest absorbers with N_HI > 10^{14.5} have [C/H]~=-2.5, for the UV background spectrum of Haardt & Madau (HM). Lower column density absorption arises in lower density gas, where OVI is the most sensitive metal tracer. Since OVI lines lie at wavelengths contaminated by Lyman series absorption, we interpret our Q1422 results by comparing to artificial spectra drawn from an SPH simulation of a Lambda-dominated CDM model. A search for dee…
We review the arguments for how the slope of the column density distribution of the Lyman-alpha forest should depend on the matter power spectrum. The latest progress, presented by various groups in this conference and elsewhere, is summarized.
The matter power spectrum at comoving scales of (1-40) h^{-1} Mpc is very sensitive to the presence of Warm Dark Matter (WDM) particles with large free streaming lengths. We present constraints on the mass of WDM particles from a combined analysis of the matter power spectrum inferred from the large samples of high resolution high signal-to-noise Lyman-alpha forest data of Kim et al. (2004) and Croft et al. (2002) and the cosmic microwave background data of WMAP. We obtain a lower limit of m_wdm > 550 eV (2 sigma for early decoupled thermal relics and m_wdm > 2.0 keV (2 sigma) for sterile neut…
Observers have demonstrated that it is now feasible to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature at high redshifts. We explore the possible constraints on cosmology which might ultimately be derived from such measurements. Besides providing a consistency check on standard and alternative cosmologies, possibilities include: constraints on the inhomogeneity and anisotropy of the universe at intermediate redshift $z ^<_\sim 10$; an independent probe of peculiar motions with respect to the Hubble flow; and constraining the epoch of reionization. We argue that the best possibility i…
We generalize to non-flat geometries the formalism of Simon et al. (2005) to reconstruct the dark energy potential. This formalism makes use of quantities similar to the Horizon-flow parameters in inflation, can, in principle, be made non-parametric and is general enough to be applied outside the simple, single scalar field quintessence. Since presently available and forthcoming data do not allow a non-parametric and exact reconstruction of the potential, we consider a general parametric description in term of Chebyshev polynomials. We then consider present and future measurements of H(z), Bar…
We study prospects of a method to constrain the inclination of a coalescing compact binary by detecting its gravitational waves associated with a three-dimensionally localized (direction and distance) short-hard gamma-ray burst. We take advantage of a synergy of these two observations, and our method can be applied even with a single interferometer. For a nearly face-on binary the inclination angle $I$ can be constrained in the range 1-1/SNR < cosI \le 1 (SNR: the signal to noise ratio of gravitational wave detection), provided that the error of the distance estimation is negligible. This meth…
The properties of the Lyman-$α$ absorptions observed in the spectra of QSOs are reviewed: the distribution of column densities and Doppler widths, the redshift evolution, the ``inverse effect'', the clustering. By interpreting the statistics of the line parameters insight is gained about the nature of the absorbers, their sizes, temperatures, confining agents. On the basis of the ``inverse effect'' it is possible to estimate the ultraviolet background radiation at high redshift and, linking this information with the limits on the Gunn-Peterson optical depth, the density of the diffuse part of …
We present a Very Large Array (VLA) HI 21cm map and optical observations of the region around one of the nearest damped Lyman-alpha absorbers beyond the local group, SBS 1543+593. Two previously uncataloged galaxies have been discovered and a redshift has been determined for a third. All three of these galaxies are at the redshift of SBS 1543+593 and are ~185 kpc from the damped Lyman-alpha absorber. We discuss the HI and optical properties of SBS 1543+593 and its newly identified neighbors. Both SBS 1543+593 and Dwarf 1 have baryonic components that are dominated by neutral gas -- unusual for…
The first galaxies that formed at a redshift ~20-30 emitted continuum photons with energies between the Lyman-alpha and Lyman limit wavelengths of hydrogen, to which the neutral universe was transparent except at the Lyman-series resonances. As these photons redshifted or scattered into the Lyman-alpha resonance they coupled the spin temperature of the 21cm transition of hydrogen to the gas temperature, allowing it to deviate from the microwave background temperature. We show that the fluctuations in the radiation emitted by the first galaxies produced strong fluctuations in the 21cm flux befo…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is a project to definitively map $π$ steradians of the local Universe. An array of CCD detectors used in drift-scan mode will digitally image the sky in five passbands to a limiting magnitude of $r' \sim 23$. Selected from the imaging survey, $10^6$ galaxies and $10^5$ quasars will be observed spectroscopically. I describe the current status of the survey, which is due to begin observations early in 1997, and its prospects for constraining models for dark matter in the Universe.
We present the first results of a search for Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) in the DEEP2 spectroscopic database that uses a search technique that is different from but complementary to traditional narrowband imaging surveys. We have visually inspected ~20% of the available DEEP2 spectroscopic data and have found nine high-quality LAEs with clearly asymmetric line profiles and an additional ten objects of lower quality, some of which may also be LAEs. Our survey is most sensitive to LAEs at z=4.4-4.9 and that is indeed where all but one of our high-quality objects are found. We find the number den…
We use LUQAS, a sample of 27 high resolution high signal-to-noise UVES quasar (QSO) spectra (Kim et al. 2004), and the Croft et al. (2002) sample together with a set of high resolution large box size hydro-dynamical simulations run with the code GADGET-II to recover the linear dark matter power spectrum at z>2 and at scales of 1-40 Mpc/h. These scales cannot be probed by any other observable. We address some of the uncertainties in the theoretical modelling of the Lyman-alpha forest structures such as the difference between full hydro-dynamical simulations and a more simplified scheme based on…
We apply phase-space density considerations to obtain lower bounds on the mass of sterile neutrino as dark matter candidate. The bounds are different for non-resonant production, resonant production in the presence of lepton asymmetry and production in decays of heavier particles. In the former case our bound is comparable to, but independent of the Lyman-alpha bound, and together with X-ray upper limit it disfavors non-resonantly produced sterile neutrino dark matter. An interesting feature of the latter case is that warm dark matter may be composed of heavy particles.
In quintessence models, the dark energy content of the universe is described by a slowly rolling scalar field whose pressure and energy density obey an equation of state of the form p=w $ρ$; w is in general a function of time such that w<-1/3, in order to drive the observed acceleration of the Universe today. The cosmological constant model LCDM corresponds to the limiting case w=-1. In this paper, we explore the prospects of using the Lyman-alpha forest to constrain w, using semi-analytical techniques to model the intergalactic medium (IGM). A different value of w changes both the growth fact…
Cosmological simulations with gas dynamics suggest that the Lyman-alpha forest is produced mainly by "small scale structure" --- filaments and sheets that are the high redshift analog of today's galaxy superclusters. There is no sharp distinction between Lyman-alpha clouds and "Gunn-Peterson" absorption produced by the fluctuating IGM -- the Lyman-alpha forest {\it is} the Gunn-Peterson effect. Lyman limit and damped Lyman-alpha absorption arises in the radiatively cooled gas of forming galaxies. At $z~2-3$, most of the gas is in the photoionized, diffuse medium associated with the Lyman-alpha…
We examine the ability of a future X-ray observatory to constrain dark energy via measurements of the cluster X-ray gas mass fraction, fgas. We find that fgas measurements for a sample of ~500 hot, X-ray bright, dynamically relaxed clusters, to a precision of ~5 per cent, can be used to constrain dark energy with a Dark Energy Task Force (DETF) figure of merit of 15-40, with the possibility of boosting these values by 40 per cent or more by optimizing the redshift distribution of target clusters. Such constraints are comparable to those predicted by the DETF for other leading, planned dark ene…
High redshift galaxies selected on the basis of their strong Lyman-alpha emission tend to be young ages and small physical sizes. We show this by analyzing the spectral energy distribution (SED) of 9 Lyman-alpha emitting (LAE) galaxies at 4.0 < z < 5.7 n the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Rest-frame UV to optical 700A < lambda < 7500A luminosities, or upper limits, are used to constrain old stellar populations. We derive best fit, as well as maximally massive and maximally old, properties of all 9 objects. We show that these faint and distant objects are all very young, being most likely only…
Equivalent widths (EWs) observed in high-redshift Lyman alpha galaxies could be stronger than the EW intrinsic to the stellar population if dust is present residing in clumps in the inter-stellar medium (ISM). In this scenario, continuum photons could be extinguished while the Lyman alpha photons would be resonantly scattered by the clumps, eventually escaping the galaxy. We investigate this radiative transfer scenario with a new sample of six Lyman alpha galaxy candidates in the GOODS CDF-S, selected at z = 4.4 with ground-based narrow-band imaging obtained at CTIO. Grism spectra from the HST…
The 2s_{1/2} state of hydrogen is metastable and overpopulated in HII regions. In addition, the 2p states may be pumped by ambient Lyman-alpha radiation. Fine structure transitions between these states may be observable in HII regions at 1.1 GHz (2s_{1/2}-2p_{1/2}) and/or 9.9 GHz (2s_{1/2}-2p_{3/2}), although the details of absorption versus emission are determined by the relative populations of the 2s and 2p states. The n=2 level populations are solved with a parameterization that allows for Lyman-alpha pumping of the 2p states. The density of Lyman-alpha photons is set by their creation rate…
We explore the requirements for a Lyman-alpha forest (LyaF) survey designed to measure the angular diameter distance and Hubble parameter at 2~<z~<4 using the standard ruler provided by baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO). The goal would be to obtain a high enough density of sources to probe the three-dimensional density field on the scale of the BAO feature. A percent-level measurement in this redshift range can almost double the Dark Energy Task Force Figure of Merit, relative to the case with only a similar precision measurement at z~1, if the Universe is not assumed to be flat. This impro…
Observations of neutrino oscillations show that neutrinos have mass. However, the best constraints on this mass currently come from cosmology, via measurements of the cosmic microwave background and large scale structure. In this paper, we explore the prospects for using low-frequency radio observations of the redshifted 21 cm signal from the epoch of reionization to further constrain neutrino masses. We use the Fisher matrix formalism to compare future galaxy surveys and 21 cm experiments. We show that by pushing to smaller scales and probing a considerably larger volume 21 cm experiments can…
