New resonances with masses of order a few ${\rm TeV}$ might be discovered at the LHC. We show that no resonance that couples to electrons only through Standard Model interactions can decay to both $e^+e^-$and $γγ$ with significant branching ratios. This means that finding both electron-positron and two-photon final states is evidence that electrons couple directly to the new physics associated with the resonance and furthermore that the resonance is not spin-1. The least fine-tuned such examples involve electron compositeness. One such example, Kaluza Klein excitations of the graviton in the version of the Randall Sundrum Model where Standard Model matter is located on the ${\rm TeV}$ brane, can be distinguished from other possibilities by its predicted branching fractions into the two modes.
We analyze the process $\vec γ+p\to ρ^0 π^{+}n$ at low momentum transfer focusing on a possibility of production of an exotic $J^{PC}=1^{-+}$ meson state. In particular we discuss polarization observables and conclude that linear photon polarization is instrumental for separating of the exotic wave.
We discuss implications of open string theory in B-violating low energy physics. In particular, exotic instantons can dynamically generate effective six quarks' operator, leading to a neutron-antineutron transition. Proton is not destabilized and flavor changing neutral currents are under control.
If the exotic baryon $Θ^+(1540)$ is a correlated $udud\bar{s}$ with $J^P = {1/2}^+$, then there should exist an exotic meson, $J^P = 1^-$ $\vartheta^+ (S=+2)$ $\to K^+K^0$ $\sim 1.6$GeV with width $O(10-100)$MeV. The $π_1(1400;1600)$ may be broad members of {\bf 10} $\pm$ \10bar in such a picture. Vector mesons in the 1.4 - 1.7GeV mass range are also compared with this picture.
Recent experimental data from BNL on the isovector J^PC =1^-+ exotic at 1.6 GeV in ρπindicate the existence of a non-quarkonium state consistent with lattice gauge theory predictions. We discuss how further experiments can strengthen this conclusion. We show that the ρπ, η'πand ηπcouplings of this state qualitatively support the hypothesis that it is a hybrid meson, although other interpretations cannot be eliminated.
In this talk, I review, from the phenomenological point of view, solutions to the solar neutrino problem, which are not provided by the conventional neutrino oscillation induced by mass and flavor mixing, and show that they can provide a good fit to the observed data. I also consider some simple implications for low energy solar neutrino experiments.
We discuss implications of Weak gravity conjecture (WGC) for exotic D-brane instantons. In particular, WGC leads to indirect stringent bounds on non-perturbative superpotentials generated by exotic instantons, with many implications for phenomenology: R-parity violating processes, neutrino mass, $μ$-problem, Neutron-Antineutron transitions and collider physics.
We investigate the implications of models that achieve a Standard Model-like Higgs boson of mass near 125 GeV by introducing additional TeV-scale supermultiplets in the vector-like 10+\bar{10} representation of SU(5), within the context of gauge-mediated supersymmetry breaking. We study the resulting mass spectrum of superpartners, comparing and contrasting to the usual gauge-mediated and CMSSM scenarios, and discuss implications for LHC supersymmetry searches. This approach implies that exotic vector-like fermions t'_{1,2}, b',and τ' should be within the reach of the LHC. We discuss the masse…
Exotic fermions of half-integral charges at the TeV energy scale are predicted by the quartification model of Babu, Ma, and Willenbrock. We add to these one copy of their scalar analogs and discuss the ensuing phenomenological implications, i.e. radiative contributions to lepton masses and flavor-changing leptonic decays.
The Michel parameter xi" has been determined from a measurement of the longitudinal polarization of positrons emitted in the decay of polarized and depolarized muons. The result, xi" = 0.981 +- 0.045stat +- 0.003syst, is consistent with the Standard Model prediction of unity, and provides an order of magnitude improvement in the relative precision of this parameter. This value sets new constraints on exotic couplings beyond the dominant V-A description of the leptonic weak interaction.
We investigate the possibility that the light-mass exotic mesons with J^PC=1^-+ observed at BNL and CERN may be resonances in the eta-pi and eta'-pi systems associated with the anomalous glue which generates the eta' mass in QCD.
Narrow high-mass states can arise despite large phase space when two nearly degenerate states are coupled to the same dominant decay mode. Mixing via a final-state interaction loop diagram can produce one very broad state and one narrow state. Such a situation is generic in exotic hadrons where a color singlet with given flavor and spin quantum numbers can be constructed with two distinct internal color couplings of quarks. The simplest realization of this idea are the (Q Qbar q qbar) tetraquarks containing two heavy and two light quarks. We discuss possible experimental implications, includin…
We analyze the role of final state interactions in decay of the lighest exotic meson, $pi_1$ with $J^{PC}=1^{-+}. We use the relativistic Lippmann-Schwinger equation for two coupled $πb_{1}$ and $πρ$ channels. The first one is the predicted dominant decay mode of the $π_{1}$, whereas in the other a narrow $π_1(1600)$ exotic signal has been reported by the E852 collaboration. The FSI potential is constructed, based on the $ω$ meson exchange between the two channels. We find that this process introduces corrections to the $π_{1}$ widths of the order of only a few MeV. Therefore, we conclude that…
We discuss the implications on light by light scattering of two kind of exotic particles: doubly charged scalar bosons and doubly charged fermions; the virtual effects of a nonstandard singly charged gauge boson are also examined. These particles, if their masses lie in the range 0.1--1.0 TeV, will have a clear signature in the future linear colliders. The present analysis has the advantage that it depends only on electromagnetic symmetry, so it is applicable to any model which predicts this class of particles. In particular, our results have interesting consequences on left-right models and t…
Exotic compact objects (ECOs) have recently become an exciting research subject, since they are speculated to have a special response to the incident gravitational waves (GWs) that leads to GW echoes. We show that energy carried by GWs can easily cause the event horizon to form out of a static ECO --- leaving no echo signals towards spatial infinity. To show this, we use the ingoing Vaidya spacetime and take into account the back reaction due to incoming GWs. Demanding that an ECO does not collapse into a black hole puts an upper bound on the compactness of the ECO, at the cost of less distinc…
We study extensions of the standard model by one generation of vector-like leptons with non-standard hypercharges, which allow for a sizable modification of the h -> gamma gamma decay rate for new lepton masses in the 300 GeV - 1 TeV range. We analyze vaccum stability implications for different hypercharges. Effects in h -> Z gamma are typically much smaller than in h -> gamma gamma, but distinct among the considered hypercharge assignments. Non-standard hypercharges constrain or entirely forbid possible mixing operators with standard model leptons. As a consequence, the leading contributions …
Superstring phenomenology aims at achieving two goals. The first is to reproduce the observed physics of the Standard Model. The second is to identify experimental signatures of superstring unification which, if observed, will provide further evidence for the validity of superstring theory. I discuss such potential signatures of superstring unification. I propose that proton lifetime constraints imply that the Standard Model gauge group must be obtained directly at the string level. In this case the unifying gauge group, for example $SO(10)$, is broken to the Standard Model gauge group by ``Wi…
We show how R-parity can be dynamically broken by non-perturbative quantum gravity effects. In particular, in D-brane models, Exotic instantons provide a simple and calculable mechanism for the generation of R-parity violating bilinear, trilinear and higher order superpotential terms. We show examples of MSSM-like D-brane models, in which one Exotic Instanton induces only one term among the possible R-parity violating superpotentials. Naturally, the idea can be generalized for other gauge groups. As a consequence, a dynamical violation of R-parity does not necessarily destabilize the proton, i…
Our present understanding of the universe requires the existence of dark matter and dark energy. We describe here a natural mechanism that could make exotic dark matter and possibly dark energy unnecessary. Graviton-graviton interactions increase the gravitational binding of matter. This increase, for large massive systems such as galaxies, may be large enough to make exotic dark matter superfluous. Within a weak field approximation we compute the effect on the rotation curves of galaxies and find the correct magnitude and distribution without need for arbitrary parameters or additional exotic…
A simple, causal, and analytic model of final state rescattering is used to describe all available data on the exotic resonances $Z_c(3900)$ and $Z_c(4025)$. The model provides a compelling and accurate representation of experiment with no need for poles in the scattering matrix.
Global consistency of string compactifications places constraints on the chiral matter spectrum of a gauge theory which include those necessary for the absence of cubic nonabelian anomalies, but also contain some additional conditions. In the class of theories we study, some of these are present in a field theory augmented by anomalous U(1)'s and Chern-Simons terms, but some are genuinely not present in field theory. Their violation has phenomenological implications, rendering inconsistent many quiver gauge theories with the chiral matter spectrum of the MSSM. The inconsistent MSSM quivers oft…
We prove that - even at a low TeV scale - the canonical seesaw mechanism can be naturally implemented in the exact solution of a particular 3-3-1 gauge model, since a very small alteration $ε$ in the parameter matrix of the Higgs sector is taken into account. Therefore, this new parameter can act as an appropriate mass source for neutrinos, while - due to the main parameter $a$ - all the previously achieved results in the exact solution of the model are recovered. Moreover, this mathematical artifice does separate the boson mass spectrum from the neutrino mass issue, hence giving more flexibil…
The H1 and ZEUS collaborations have recently reported a significant excess of events at high $Q^2$ in positron-proton collisions. While there exists insufficient data to conclusively determine the origin of this excess, one possibility is that it is due to a new leptoquark at mass scale around 200 GeV. We examine the type of leptoquark states that exist in superstring derived standard-like models, and show that, while these models may contain the standard leptoquark states which exist in Grand Unified Theories, they also generically contain new and exotic leptoquark states with fractional lept…
In the attempt to fully profile a $Z'$ boson accessible at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we study the sensitivity of di-lepton (for the electron, muon and tauon cases) and di-quark (for the case of the heavy flavours, $t$ and, possibly, $b$) samples to the nature of the new gauge state, for a one-dimensional class of non-exotic $Z'$ bosons. Assuming realistic final state reconstruction efficiencies and error estimates, we find that, depending on the CERN collider energy and luminosity, the best chances of extracting the $Z'$ quantum numbers occur when two or more of these channels are simul…
We consider a generic abelian hidden sector that couples to the Standard Model only through gauge-invariant renormalizable operators. This allows the exotic Higgs boson to mix with the Standard Model Higgs boson, and the exotic abelian gauge boson to mix with the Standard Model hypercharge gauge boson. One immediate consequence of spontaneous breaking of the hidden sector gauge group is the possible decay of the lightest Higgs boson into four fermions through intermediate exotic gauge bosons. We study the implications of this decay for Higgs boson phenomenology at the Fermilab Tevatron Collide…

The present collider data put severe constraints on any type of new strongly-interacting particle coupling to the Higgs boson. We analyze the phenomenological limits on exotic quarks belonging to non-triplet SU(3)_C representations and their implications on Higgs searches. The discovery of the Standard Model Higgs, in the experimentally allowed mass range, would exclude the presence of exotic quarks coupling to it. Thus, such QCD particles could only exist provided that their masses do not originate in the SM Higgs mechanism.
Accessing a full image of the inner content of hadrons represents a central endeavour of modern particle physics, with the main scientific motivation to investigate the strong interaction binding the visible matter. On the one hand, the structure of known exotic candidates is a fundamental open issue addressed widely by scientists. On the other hand, looking for new states of exotic nature is a central component for theoretical and experimental efforts from electron-positron machine and electron accelerator with fixed target to heavy ion and electron-ion colliders. In this article we present a…
The phenomenological implications of the E6 inspired supersymmetric models based on the Standard Model gauge group together with extra U(1)_N gauge symmetry under which right-handed neutrinos have zero charge are examined. In these models single discrete symmetry forbids the tree-level flavour changing processes and the most dangerous operators that violate baryon and lepton numbers. The two-loop renormalisation group flow of the gauge and Yukawa couplings is explored and the qualitative pattern of the Higgs spectrum in the case of the quasi-fixed point scenario is discussed. These E6 inspired…
The Dimension-5 Seesaw Portal is a Type-I Seesaw model extended by $d=5$ operators involving the sterile neutrino states, leading to new interactions between all neutrinos and the Standard Model neutral bosons. In this work we focus primarily on the implications of these new operators at the GeV-scale. In particular, we recalculate the heavy neutrino full decay width, up to three-body decays. We also review bounds on the dipole operator, and revisit LEP constraints on its coefficient. Finally, we turn to heavy neutrino pair production from Higgs decays, where the former are long-lived and disi…
We study the prospects for the exotic Higgs decay mode $h\to ss\to 4τ$ at planned electron-positron colliders in the case where the beyond-the-Standard Model particle $s$ is too light to decay into $b \bar b$ pairs. We find that with 5 ab$^{-1}$ of unpolarized collisions at 240 GeV, the branching ratio into this final state can be constrained to be below $\sim 1.3\times 10^{-4}$ at 95\% CL, depending on the mass of $s$ and the assumed tracking efficiency.
We investigate theoretical interpretations of the 1.4 GeV J^PC exotic resonance reported by the E852 collaboration. It is argued that interpretation in terms of a hybrid meson is untenable. A K-matrix analysis shows that the 1.4 GeV enhancement in the E852 eta pi data can be understood as an interference of a non-resonant Deck-type background and a resonance at 1.6 GeV. A final state rescattering calculation shows that the 1.6 GeV hybrid has a eta pi width which is bounded above by 57 \pm 14 MeV.
Highlights in the search for nonconventional (non qqbar) meson states are the pi_1(1400) and pi_1(1600) exotic candidates. Should they exist, mounting theoretical arguments suggest that they are tetraquark molecular resonances excitable by meson rescattering. We report a new tetraquark calculation within a model field theory approximation to Quantum Chromodynamics in the Coulomb gauge supporting this conjecture. We also strengthen this claim by consistently contrasting results with exotic state predictions for hybrid (q qbar g) mesons within the same theoretical framework. Our findings confirm…
We study the weak decay of the $Λ_b$ baryon into $J/ψ ϕ Λ$, a process that is particularly well suited to analyze the physics of some of the recently observed or theoretically predicted exotic hadrons, as one expects to see their signature in all three final two-body channels. In the $J/ψ\, ϕ$ invariant mass spectrum we study the interplay between the $X(4140)$ and the $X(4160)$ resonances. The $J/ψ\, Λ$ mass spectrum may help to identify the strange partner of the hidden-charm pentaquark recently observed by the LHCb collaboration, the existence of which has been predicted by a chiral unitary…
The LHCb Collaboration has reported resonant activity in the channel $D^+ K^-$, identifying two components: $X_0(2900)$ with $J^P = 0^+$ at $2866 {\pm} 7$ MeV, $Γ_0=57{\pm} 13$ MeV and $X_1(2900)$ with $J^P = 1^-$ at $2904 {\pm} 7$ MeV, $Γ_1=110{\pm} 12$ MeV. We interpret the $X_0(2900)$ component as a $cs \bar u\bar d$ isosinglet compact tetraquark, calculating its mass to be $2863 {\pm} 12$ MeV. This is the first exotic hadron with open heavy flavor. The analogous $bs\bar u\bar d$ tetraquark is predicted at $6213 {\pm} 12$ MeV. We discuss possible interpretations of the heavier and wider $X_…
The exotic decay modes of non-Standard Model Higgs bosons are efficient in probing the hierarchical Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDM). In particular, the decay mode $H^\pm\to HW^\pm$ serves as a powerful channel in searching for charged Higgses. In this paper, we analyzed the reach for $H^\pm\to HW^\pm \to t\bar{t}W$ at a 100 TeV $pp$ collider, and showed that it extends the reach of the previously studied $ττW$ final states once above the top threshold. Top tagging technique is used, in combination with the boosted decision tree classifier. Almost the entire hierarchical Type-II 2HDM parameter …
We report on a recent computation of the transitions of exotic bottomonium to standard bottomonium and light quark hadrons. We work under the assumption that the $Υ(10753)$ and $Υ(11020)$ can be described as the lowest laying and first excitation $1^{--}$ hybrid bottomonium states, respectively. The computation has two distinct parts: the heavy quark transition matrix elements, which are obtained in a nonrelativistic EFT incorporating the heavy quark, multipole and adiabatic expansions; and the hadronization of the gluonic operators into the light-meson final states. The single mesons producti…
The Standard Model gauge symmetry is extended by $U(1)_{B-L}$ which when spontaneously broken leads to residual $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry. $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge symmetry made anomaly free by introducing exotic SM singlets with corresponding $U(1)_{B-L}$ charges of $13$, $-14$, and $15$. $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry ensures the Dirac nature of neutrinos, simultaneously stabilizing dark matter. Dirac neutrino mass is generated through scotogenic scenario. Dark matter, direct detection, cosmological constraints, and collider constraints analysis is performed. $\mathbb{Z}_4$ symmetry predicts the exact abse…
We investigate the potential reach of a search for a long-lived/prompt dark vector boson $Z_D$, also called dark $Z$, and a prompt dark Higgs boson $h_D$ through exotic decays of the observed Higgs boson $h$ into either $Z_DZ_D$, $h_Dh_D$, or $ZZ_D$ with $Z$ being the hypercharge gauge boson. The $Z_D$ production through the Higgs portal is completed via one of two mechanisms, kinetic mixing of $Z_D$ with $Z$ and the mixing of $h_D$ with $h$. All production modes of $h$ are considered, while the branching fractions are calculated in Monte Carlo simulation using the {\textsc{MadGraph5}}\_aMC@NL…
We perform a statistical combination of the ATLAS and CMS results for the search of a heavy resonance decaying to a pair of vector bosons with the $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV datasets collected at the LHC. We take into account six searches in hadronic and semileptonic final states carried out by the two collaborations. We consider only public information provided by ATLAS and CMS in the HEPDATA database and in papers published in refereed journals. We interpret the combined results within the context of a few benchmark new physics models, such as models predicting the existence of a {\ensuremath{\mathrm{…
The program HiggsBounds is a well-established tool for testing Beyond-the-Standard Model (BSM) theories with an extended Higgs sector against experimental limits from collider searches at LEP, Tevatron and LHC. Thus far, it could be applied to any neutral or charged Higgs bosons originating from the modified Higgs sector. Implicitly, these particles were assumed to exhibit a somewhat hierarchical Yukawa structure as present in the Standard Model, where in particular the couplings to first generation fermions could be neglected. In this work, we extend the HiggsBounds functionalities to go beyo…
In companion papers \cite{Addazi:2015pia,Addazi:2016rgo}, we have discussed current bounds of a new super-light baryo-photon, associated to a $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauged, from neutron-antineutron current data, which are competitive with Eötvös type experiments. Here, we discuss the implications of a possible baryo-photon detection in string theory and quantum gravity. The discovery of a very light gauge boson should imply the violation of the Weak Gravity Conjecture, carrying deep consequences in our understanding of holography, quantum gravity and black holes. On the other hand, we show how the detec…
The Higgs boson may have decay channels that are not predicted by the Standard Model. We discuss the prospects of probing exotic Higgs decays at the LHC using the 4-lepton final state. We study two specific scenarios, with new particles appearing in the intermediate state of the 4-lepton Higgs decay. In one, Higgs decays to a Z boson and a new massive gauge boson, the so-called hidden photon. In the other, Higgs decays to an electron or a muon and a new vector-like fermion. We argue that the upcoming LHC run will be able to explore a new parameter space of these models that is allowed by curre…
This proceeding describes the experimental results presented at the TOP2014 conference on searches for physics beyond the standard model in final states containing top quarks by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC. The searches presented were done in the context of a wide range of theoretical models except those related to Supersymmetry. Results presented use about 20 fb$^{-1}$ of data taken with 8 TeV proton-proton collisions from the LHC. No significant excesses beyond the standard model are observed, therefore limits on potential new signals are set.
This review presents a selection of the final results of searches for various exotic physics phenomena in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 and 8 TeV delivered by the LHC and collected with the ATLAS and CMS detectors in 2011 (5 fb-1) and in the first part of 2012 (4 fb-1). Searches for large extra dimensions, gravitons, microscopic black holes, long-lived particles, dark matter, and leptoquarks are presented in this report. No sign of new physics beyond the Standard Model has been observed so far. In the majority of the cases these searches set the most stringent limits to date on the afo…
Illuminating all-hadronic final states with a photon: Exotic decays of the Higgs boson to four bottom quarks in vector boson fusion plus gamma at hadron colliders
The decay $D^0 \to π^+ π^- π^0$ appears to be dominated by $ρπ$ states in a configuration of zero total isotopic spin. The spin $J$, parity $P$, and charge-conjugation eigenvalue $C$ of this final state are therefore $J^{PC} = 0^{--}$, which cannot be formed of a quark $q$ and antiquark $\bar q$. If a resonance near $M(D^0)$ dominates the final state, it must be a {\it hybrid} composed of a quark-antiquark pair and a constituent gluon, or a {\it tetraquark} $q q \bar q \bar q$. A test for this resonance in electroproduction is proposed.
In cosmology, distances based on standard candles (e.g. supernovae) and standard rulers (e.g. baryon oscillations) agree as long as three conditions are met: (1) photon number is conserved, (2) gravity is described by a metric theory with (3) photons travelling on unique null geodesics. This is the content of distance-duality (the reciprocity relation) which can be violated by exotic physics. Here we analyse the implications of the latest cosmological data sets for distance-duality. While broadly in agreement and confirming acceleration we find a 2-sigma violation caused by excess brightening …
Since all couplings of the exotic $Θ^+$ baryon to normal hadrons seem to be small it is hard to reveal it in standard resonance searching. We suggest to look for the $Θ^+$ production in interference with a known resonance yielding the same final state but having a high production rate. The interference process is linear in the $Θ^+$ couplings whereas the non-interference process is quadratic. That gives an obvious gain if the couplings are small. Moreover, employing the peculiar oscillating nature of the interference processes one can reduce considerably the parasitic background and determine …
The recently reported Theta(1540) exotic baryon seems to be very narrow: Gamma(Theta)< 1 MeV according to some analyses. Using methods of low energy scattering theory, we develop expectations for the width of the Theta, an elastic resonance in KN scattering in a theory where the characteristic range of interactions is ~1 Fermi. If the Theta is a potential scattering resonance, generated by the forces in the KN channel, its width is hard to account for unless the KN-channel orbital angular momentum, l, is two or greater. If the Theta is a CDD pole, its coupling to the scattering channel is at l…
