Using three newly identified galaxy clusters at z~1 (photometric redshift) we measure the evolution of the galaxies within clusters from high redshift to the present day by studying the growth of the red cluster sequence. The clusters are located in the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) Dark Field, an extremely deep mid-infrared survey near the north ecliptic pole with photometry in 18 total bands from X-ray through far-IR. Two of the candidate clusters are additionally detected as extended emission in matching Chandra data in the survey area allowing us to measure their masses to be M_{500}= 6.2 \pm 1.0 \times 10^{13} and 3.6 \pm 1.1 \times 10^{13} solar masses. For all three clusters we create a composite color magnitude diagram in rest-frame B-K using our deep HST and Spitzer imaging. By comparing the fraction of low luminosity member galaxies on the composite red sequence with the corresponding population in local clusters at z=0.1 taken from the COSMOS survey, we examine the effect of a galaxy's mass on its evolution. We find a deficit of faint galaxies on the red sequence in our z~1 clusters which implies that more massive galaxies have evolved in clusters faster than less massive galaxies, and that the less massive galaxies are still forming stars in clusters such that they have not yet settled onto the red sequence.
We study 87 Extremely Red Objects (EROs), selected both to have color redder than R-[3.6] = 4.0, and to have confirmed spectroscopic redshifts. Together, these two constraints result in this sample populating a fairly narrow redshift range at 0.76 < z < 1.42. The key new ingredient included here is deep Spitzer Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) data. Based on [3.6]-[8.0] color, we demonstrate that it is possible to classify EROs into early-type, dusty starburst, or power-law (AGN) types. We present ultraviolet to mid-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and Advanced Camera …
IRAC imaging of a 4'7x4'7 area in the Lockman Hole detected over 400 galaxies in the IRAC 3.6 micron and 4.5 micron bands, 120 in the 5.8 micron, and 80 in the 8 micron bandin 30 minutes of observing time. Color-color diagrams suggest that about half of these galaxies are at redshifts 0.6<z<1.3 with about a quarter at higher redshifts (z>1.3). We also detect IRAC counterparts for 6 of the 7 SCUBA sources and all 9 XMM sources in this area. The detection of the counterparts of the SCUBA sources and galaxies at z>1.3 demonstrates the ability of IRAC to probe the universe at very high redshifts.
We have identified 335 galaxy cluster and group candidates spanning 0<z<2, using a 4.5um selected sample of galaxies in a 7.25 deg^2 region in the Spitzer/IRAC Shallow Survey. Using full redshift probability distributions for all galaxies, clusters were identified as 3-dimensional overdensities using a wavelet algorithm. To date 12 clusters at z>1, and over 60 at z < 0.5 have been spectroscopically confirmed. The mean I-[3.6] color for cluster galaxies up to z~1 is well matched by a z_f=3 passively evolving model. At z>1, a wider range of formation histories is needed, but higher formation red…
High-redshift submillimetre-bright galaxies identified by blank field surveys at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths appear in the region of the IRAC colour-colour diagrams previously identified as the domain of luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our analysis using a set of empirical and theoretical dusty starburst spectral energy distribution (SED) models shows that power-law continuum sources associated with hot dust heated by young (<100 Myr old), extreme starbursts at z>2 also occupy the same general area as AGNs in the IRAC colour-colour plots. A detailed comparison of the IRAC …
We analyze very deep HST, VLT and Spitzer photometry of galaxies at 2<z<3.5 in the Hubble Deep Field South. The sample is selected from the deepest public K-band imaging currently available. We show that the rest-frame U-V vs V-J color-color diagram is a powerful diagnostic of the stellar populations of distant galaxies. Galaxies with red rest-frame U-V colors are generally red in rest-frame V-J as well. However, at a given U-V color a range in V-J colors exists, and we show that this allows us to distinguish young, dusty galaxies from old, passively evolving galaxies. We quantify the effects …
Accurate photometric redshifts are calculated for nearly 200,000 galaxies to a 4.5 micron flux limit of ~13 uJy in the 8.5 deg^2 Spitzer/IRAC Shallow survey. Using a hybrid photometric redshift algorithm incorporating both neural-net and template-fitting techniques, calibrated with over 15,000 spectroscopic redshifts, a redshift accuracy of σ= 0.06(1+z) is achieved for 95% of galaxies at 0<z<1.5. The accuracy is σ= 0.12(1+z) for 95% of AGN at 0<z<3. Redshift probability functions, central to several ongoing studies of the galaxy population, are computed for the full sample. We demonstrate that…
We have identified 335 galaxy cluster and group candidates, 106 of which are at z > 1, using a 4.5 um selected sample of objects from a 7.25 deg^2 region in the Spitzer Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) Shallow Survey. Clusters were identified as 3-dimensional overdensities using a wavelet algorithm, based on photometric redshift probability distributions derived from IRAC and NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey data. We estimate only ~10% of the detections are spurious. To date 12 of the z > 1 candidates have been confirmed spectroscopically, at redshifts from 1.06 to 1.41. Velocity dispersions of ~750 km…
We present an analysis of large-scale structure from the Spitzer Wide-area Infrared Extragalactic legacy survey, SWIRE. The two-point angular correlation functions were computed for galaxies detected in the 3.6-micron IRAC band, on angular scales up to a degree. Significant evolution in the clustering amplitude was detected, as the median redshift of the samples increases from z=0.2 to 0.6. The galaxy clustering in the GALICS semi-analytic models was compared with the observed correlation functions and found to disagree with the data at faint flux limits.
We present photometric analysis of deep mid-infrared observations obtained by Spitzer/IRAC covering the fields Q1422+2309, Q2233+1341, DSF2237a,b, HDFN, SSA22a,b and B20902+34, giving the number counts and the depths for each field. In a sample of 751 LBGs lying in those fields, 443, 448, 137 and 152 are identified at 3.6microns, 4.5microns, 5.8microns, 8.0microns IRAC bands respectively, expanding their spectral energy distribution to rest-near-infrared and revealing that LBGs display a variety of colours. Their rest-near-infrared properties are rather inhomogeneous, ranging from those that a…
We present deep 3.6 - 8 micron imaging of the Hubble Deep Field South with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We study Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs) at z>2 selected by Js - Ks > 2.3 and compare them to a sample of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z=2-3. The observed UV-to-8 micron spectral energy distributions are fit with stellar population models to constrain star formation histories and derive stellar masses. We find that 70% of the DRGs are best described by dust-reddened star forming models and 30% are very well fit with old and ``dead'' models. Using only the I - Ks and Ks - 4.5 micron col…
We have obtained Spitzer/IRAC observations of the central 2.0 x 1.4 degrees (~280 x 200 pc) of the Galaxy at 3.6-8.0 microns. A point source catalog of 1,065,565 objects is presented. The catalog includes magnitudes for the point sources at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 microns, as well as JHK photometry from 2MASS. The point source catalog is confusion limited with average limits of 12.4, 12.1, 11.7, and 11.2 magnitudes for [3.6], [4.5], [5.8], and [8.0], respectively. We find that the confusion limits are spatially variable because of stellar surface density, background surface brightness level, an…
Using early data from the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope, taken for the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS), we identify and study objects that are well-detected at 3.6um, but are very faint (and in some cases, invisible) in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) ACS and NICMOS images and in very deep VLT Ks-band imaging. We select a sample of 17 objects with f_nu(3.6um)/f_nu(z_{850})>20. The analysis of their spectral energy-distributions (SEDs) from 0.4 to 8.0um shows that the majority of these objects cannot be satisfactorily explained without a well-evo…
Using Spitzer IRAC mid-infrared imaging from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey, we study z_850-dropout sources in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. After carefully removing contaminating flux from foreground sources, we clearly detect two z_850-dropouts at 3.6 micron and 4.5 micron, while two others are marginally detected. The mid-infrared fluxes strongly support their interpretation as galaxies at z~7, seen when the Universe was only 750 Myr old. The IRAC observations allow us for the first time to constrain the rest-frame optical colors, stellar masses, and ages of the highest redshift…
We report new Spitzer Space Telescope observations from the IRAC and MIPS instruments of the young (~ 3 Myr) sigma Orionis cluster. We identify 336 stars as members of the cluster using optical and near-infrared color magnitude diagrams. Using the spectral energy distribution (SED) slopes in the IRAC spectral range, we place objects in several classes: non-excess stars, stars with optically thick disks(like classical T Tauri stars), class I (protostellar) candidates, and stars with ``evolved disks''; the last exhibit smaller IRAC excesses than optically thick disk systems. In general, this cla…
We present the first results of a Spitzer IRAC (Infrared Array Camera) wide-field survey of the Coma cluster. The observations cover two fields of different galaxy densities; the first is a 0.733 deg^2 region in the core of the cluster (Coma 1), the second a 0.555 deg^2 off-center region located ~57 arcmin (1.7 Mpc) south-west from the core (Coma 3). The observations, although short 70-90 s exposures, are very sensitive; we detect ~29,200 sources at 3.6 micron over the total ~1.3 deg^2 survey area. We construct 3.6 micron galaxy luminosity functions (LFs) for each field using selection functio…
We present the galaxy cluster autocorrelation function of 277 galaxy cluster candidates with 0.25 \le z \le 1.5 in a 7 deg^2 area of the IRAC Shallow Cluster Survey. We find strong clustering throughout our galaxy cluster sample, as expected for these massive structures. Specifically, at <z> = 0.5 we find a correlation length of r_0 = 17.40^{+3.98}_{-3.10} h^-1 Mpc, in excellent agreement with the Las Campanas Distant Cluster Survey, the only other non-local measurement. At higher redshift, <z> = 1, we find that strong clustering persists, with a correlation length of r_0=19.14^{+5.65}_{-4.56}…
A new 6-cm survey of almost 0.6 square degrees to a limit of 0.55-mJy/beam (10-sigma) finds 37 isolated radio sources and 7 radio source pairs (not necessarily physical companions). IRAC counterparts are identified for at least 92% of the radio sources within the area of deep IRAC coverage, which includes 31 isolated sources and 6 pairs. This contrasts with an identification rate of <74% to R<23.95 in visible light. Eight of the IRAC galaxies have power law spectral energy distributions, implying that the mid-infrared emission comes from a powerful AGN. The remaining 26 IRAC galaxies show stel…
As part of the In-Orbit Checkout activities for the Spitzer Space Telescope, the IRAC team carried out a deep observation (average integration time ~8 hours) of a field surrounding the bright QSO HS 1700+6416. This field contains several hundred z~3 Lyman-break galaxy candidates, and we report here on their mid-infrared properties, including the IRAC detection rate, flux densities and colors, and the results of fitting population synthesis models to the optical, near-infrared, and IRAC magnitudes. The results of the model-fitting show that previous optical/near-infrared studies of LBGs were no…
By combining the VVDS with the SWIRE data, we have built the currently largest spectroscopic sample of galaxies selected in the rest-frame near-infrared. These allow us to investigate, for the first time using spectroscopic redshifts, the clustering evolution of galaxies selected from their rest-frame near-infrared luminosity in the redshift range 0.2<z<2.1. Therefore we use the projected two-point correlation function wp(rp) to study the three dimensional clustering properties of galaxies detected at 3.6 and 4.5 microns with IRAC and for which we have spectroscopic redshifts from first epoch …
We describe IRAC 3.6-8 mu_m observations and ground-based near-IR JHKs photometry from Mimir and 2MASS of the massive double cluster h & chi Persei complete to J=15.5 (M ~ 1.3 Msun. Within 25' of the cluster centers we detect \~11,000 sources with J < 15.5, ~7,000 sources with [4.5] < 15, and ~ 5000 sources with [8] < 14.5. In both clusters, the surface density profiles derived from the 2MASS data decline with distance from the cluster centers as expected for a bound cluster. Within 15' of the cluster centers, ~ 50% of the stars lie on a reddened ~ 13 Myr isochrone; at 15'-25' from the cluster…
We examine the X-ray and infrared properties of galaxies and AGNs in the 9 square degree Bootes field, using data from the Chandra XBootes and Spitzer IRAC Shallow Surveys, as well as optical spectroscopy from the AGES survey. A sample of ~30,000 objects are detected in all four IRAC bands, of which ~2,000 are associated with X-ray sources. We also study X-ray fainter sources using stacking techniques, and find that X-ray fluxes are highest for objects with IRAC colors that are known to be characteristic of AGNs. Because these are shallow, wide-field surveys, they probe the bright end of the A…
We investigate Extremely Red Objects (EROs) using near- and mid-infrared observations in five passbands (3.6 to 24 micron) obtained from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and deep ground-based R and K imaging. The great sensitivity of the IRAC camera allows us to detect 64 EROs in only 12 minutes of IRAC exposure time, by means of an R-[3.6] color cut (analogous to the traditional red R-K cut). A pure infrared K-[3.6] red cut detects a somewhat different population and may be more effective at selecting z > 1.3 EROs. We find 17% of all galaxies detected by IRAC at 3.6 or 4.5 micron to be EROs. Thes…
We present a catalogue of 99 candidate clusters and groups of galaxies in the redshift range 0.1 < z_{phot} < 1.3 discovered in the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS). The clusters are selected by their R - 3.6um galaxy color-magnitude relation using the cluster red sequence algorithm. Using this cluster sample we compute the 3.6um, 4.5um, 5.8um, & 8.0um cluster luminosity functions (LFs). Similar to previous studies, we find that for the bands that trace stellar mass at these redshifts (3.6um, 4.5um) the evolution in M* is consistent with a passively evolving population of galaxies with a high f…
We identify a population of 640 obscured and 839 unobscured AGNs at redshifts 0.7<z<~3 using multiwavelength observations of the 9 deg^2 NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS) region in Bootes. We select AGNs on the basis of Spitzer IRAC colors obtained by the IRAC Shallow Survey. Redshifts are obtained from optical spectroscopy or photometric redshift estimators. We classify the IR-selected AGNs as IRAGN 1 (unobscured) and IRAGN 2 (obscured) using a simple criterion based on the observed optical to mid-IR color, with a selection boundary of R-[4.5]=6.1, where R and [4.5] are the Vega magnitudes …
We present observations of 3.86 sq. deg. of the Perseus molecular cloud complex with the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera (IRAC). The maps show strong extended emission arising from shocked H2 in outflows in the region and from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon features. More than 120,000 sources are extracted toward the cloud. Based on their IRAC colors and comparison to off-cloud and extragalactic fields, we identify 400 candidate young stellar objects. About two thirds of these are associated with the young clusters IC348 and NGC1333, while the last third is distributed over the …
Context: the observations of the proplyds in the Orion Nebula Cluster, showing clear evidence of ongoing photoevaporation, have provided a clear proof about the role of the externally induced photoevaporation in the evolution of circumstellar disks. NGC 6611 is an open cluster suitable to study disk photoevaporation, thanks to its large population of massive members and of stars with disk. In a previous work, we obtained evidence of the influence of the strong UV field generated by the massive cluster members on the evolution of disks around low-mass Pre-Main Sequence members. That work was ba…
We have identified perhaps the largest major galaxy merger ever seen. While analysing Spitzer IRAC images of CL0958+4702, an X-ray selected cluster at z=0.39, we discovered an unusual plume of stars extending $\gtrsim$110 kpc outward from the bright central galaxy (BCG). Three galaxies 1-1.5 mag fainter than the BCG lie within 17 kpc (projected) of the BCG and are probably participating in the merger. The plume is detected in all four IRAC channels and at optical wavelengths in images from the WIYN telescope; the surface brightness is remarkably high ($μ_r\approx$24.8 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ at 50 k…
We describe the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z~3 using deep mid-infrared and optical observations of the Extended Groth Strip, obtained with IRAC and MIPS on board Spitzer and from the ground, respectively. We focus on LBGs with detections at all four IRAC bands, in particular the 26 galaxies with IRAC 8 micron band (rest--frame K-band) detections. We use stellar population synthesis models and probe the stellar content of these galaxies. Based on best--fit continuous star-formation models we derive estimates of the stellar mass for these LBGs. As in p…
The GLIMPSE archive was used to obtain 3.6--8.0micron, point source photometry and images for 381 massive protostellar candidates lying in the Galactic mid-plane. The colours, magnitudes and spectral indicies of sources in each of the 381 target fields were analysed and compared with the predictions of 2D radiative transfer model simulations. Although no discernable embedded clusters were found in any targets, multiple sources or associations of redenned young stellar objects were found in many sources indicating multiplicity at birth. The spectral index ($α$) of these point sources in 3.6--8.…
We present Spitzer observations of Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs) in three interacting systems: NGC 5291, Arp105 and Stephan's Quintet. The spectra show bright emission from polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nebular lines and warm molecular hydrogen, characteristic of recent episodes of star formation. The PAH emission that falls in the IRAC 8.0 micron band leads to the TDGs having an extremely red IRAC color, with [4.5] - [8.0] > 3. The emission from PAHs is characterized by a model with mainly neutral 100-C PAH atoms.
The Extended Groth Strip (EGS) is one of the premier fields for extragalactic deep surveys. Deep observations of the EGS with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope cover an area of 0.38 square degrees to a 50% completeness limit of 1.5 uJy at 3.6 um. The catalog comprises 57434 objects detected at 3.6 um, with 84%, 28%, and 24% also detected at 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 um. Number counts are consistent with results from other Spitzer surveys. Color distributions show that the EGS IRAC sources comprise a mixture of populations: low-redshift star-forming galaxies, quiescent gal…
We report the discovery of a galaxy cluster at z = 1.41. ISCS J143809+341419 was found in the Spitzer/IRAC Shallow Survey of the Bootes field in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey carried out by IRAC. The cluster candidate was initially identified as a high density region of objects with photometric redshifts in the range 1.3 < z < 1.5. Optical spectroscopy of a limited number of objects in the region shows that 5 galaxies within a ~120 arcsec diameter region lie at z = 1.41 +/- 0.01. Most of these member galaxies have broad--band colors consistent with the expected spectral energy distribution o…
Observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope have revealed a population of red-sequence galaxies with a significant excess in their 24-micron emission compared to what is expected from an old stellar population. We identify 900 red galaxies with 0.15<z<0.3 from the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey (AGES) selected from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey Bootes field. Using Spitzer/MIPS, we classify 89 (~10%) with 24-micron infrared excess (f24>0.3 mJy). We determine the prevalence of AGN and star-formation activity in all the AGES galaxies using optical line diagnostics and mid-IR color-color crit…
Recent ISO-data has allowed for the first time observationally based estimates for source confusion in mid-infrared surveys. We use the extragalactic source counts from ISOCAM in conjunction with K-band counts to predict the confusion due to galaxies in deep mid-IR observations. We specifically concentrate on the near-future Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) mission, and calculate expected confusion for the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) onboard SIRTF. A defining scientific goal of the IRAC instrument will be the study of high redshift galaxies using a deep, confusion limited wide field …
How does the submm galaxy population detected by SCUBA fit into galaxy evolution? How do these rare starbursting systems, which contribute significantly to high redshift star-formation, relate to other galaxy populations? Deep radio observations have been most useful for studying these systems, but still leave a significant fraction of the population unidentified. Now with the deep IRAC and MIPS images from the GOODS Spitzer Legacy program and a re-analysis of the deep radio data, we are able to identify counterparts for a large fraction of SCUBA galaxies in GOODS-N. All of these counterparts …
We present preliminary results on 24micron detections of luminous infrared galaxies at z>1 with the Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). Observations were performed in the Lockman Hole and the Extended Groth Strip (EGS), and were supplemented by data obtained with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) between 3 and 9microns. The positional accuracy of ~2arcsec for most MIPS/IRAC detections provides unambiguous identifications of their optical counterparts. Using spectroscopic redshifts from the Deep Extragalactic Evolutionary Probe survey, we identify 24micron sources at z>1 in the EGS,…
We explore the stellar population of M31 in a Spitzer Space Telescope survey utilizing IRAC and MIPS observations. Red supergiants are the brightest objects seen in the infrared; they are a prominent evolutionary phase. Due to their circumstellar envelopes, many of these radiate the bulk of their luminosity at IRAC wavelengths and do not stand out in the near infrared or optically. Going fainter, we see large numbers of luminous asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, many of which are known long period variables. Relative to M33, the AGB carbon star population of M31 appears sparse, but this nee…
We study the possible contribution of optical galaxies detected with the {\it Hubble} ACS instrument to the near-IR cosmic infrared (CIB) fluctuations in deep {\it Spitzer} images. The {\it Spitzer} data used in this analysis are obtained in the course of the GOODS project from which we select four independent $10^\prime\times10^\prime$ regions observed at both 3.6 and 4.5 \um. ACS source catalogs for all of these areas are used to construct maps containing only their emissions in the ACS $B, V, i, z$-bands. We find that deep Spitzer data exhibit CIB fluctuations remaining after removal of for…
We use observations from the 9 square degree multiwavelength survey in Bootes to identify hundreds of obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) with high redshifts (z > 0.7), luminosities (L_bol > 10^45 ergs/s), and moderate obscuring columns (N_H > 10^22 cm^-2), and to measure the clustering properties of X-ray AGN at z > 1. In the Bootes region, shallow (5 ks) Chandra X-ray observations have detected ~4,000 X-ray sources, and the same region has been mapped with deep optical imaging and by Spitzer IRAC, which detects ~300,000 point sources, of which ~30,000 have detections in all four IRAC bands…
We present the mid-infrared colors of X-ray-detected AGN and explore mid-infrared selection criteria. Using a statistical matching technique, the likelihood ratio, over 900 IRAC counterparts were identified with a new MUSYC X-ray source catalog that includes ~1000 published X-ray sources in the Chandra Deep Field-South and Extended Chandra Deep Field-South. Most X-ray-selected AGN have IRAC spectral shapes consistent with power-law slopes, f_{nu} ~ nu^{alpha}, and display a wide range of colors, -2 < alpha < 2. Although X-ray sources typically fit to redder (more negative alpha) power-laws tha…
We present the results of a search for new members of the Taurus star-forming region using the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope}. With IRAC images of 29.7 deg^2 of Taurus at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 um, we have identified sources with red mid-infrared colors indicative of disk-bearing objects and have obtained optical and infrared spectra of 23 of these candidate members. Through this work, we have discovered 13 new members of Taurus, two of which have spectral types later than M6 and thus are likely to be brown dwarfs according to the theoretical evolutionary mode…
We perform fluctuation analyses on the data from the Spitzer GOODS survey (epoch one) in the Hubble Deep Field North (HDF-N). We fit a parameterised power-law number count model of the form dN/dS = N_o S^{-δ} to data from each of the four Spitzer IRAC bands, using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling to explore the posterior probability distribution in each case. We obtain best-fit reduced chi-squared values of (3.43 0.86 1.14 1.13) in the four IRAC bands. From this analysis we determine the likely differential faint source counts down to $10^{-8} Jy$, over two orders of magnitude in flux …
We study the properties and nature of extremely red galaxies (ERO, R-K>5.6) found behind two lensing clusters and compare them with other known galaxy populations. New HST/ACS observations, Spitzer IRAC and MIPS, and Chandra/ACIS observations of the two lensing clusters Abell 1835 and AC114 contemplate our earlier optical and near-IR observations and have been used to study extremely red objects (EROs) in these deep fields. We have found 6 and 9 EROs in Abell 1835 and AC114. Several (7) of these objects are undetected up to the I and/or z band, and are hence ``optical'' drop-out sources. The p…
We discuss optical associations, spectral energy distributions and photometric redshifts for SWIRE sources in the ELAIS-N1 area and the Lockman Validation Field. The band-merged IRAC (3.6, 4.5, 5.8 and 8.0 mu) and MIPS (24, 70, 160 mu) data have been associated with optical UgriZ data from the INT Wide Field Survey in ELAIS-N1, and with our own optical Ugri data in Lockman-VF. The spectral energy distributions of selected ELAIS sources in N1 detected by SWIRE, most with spectroscopic redshifts, are modelled in terms of a simple set of galaxy and quasar templates in the optical and near infrare…
We present a study of three Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs), selected via a narrow-band survey in the GOODS northern field, and spectroscopically confirmed to have redshifts of z ~ 5.65. Using HST ACS and Spitzer IRAC data, we constrain the rest-frame UV-to-optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the galaxies. Fitting stellar population synthesis models to the observed SEDs, we find best-fit stellar populations with masses between ~ 10^9 - 10^10 M_sun and ages between ~ 5 - 100 Myr, assuming a simple starburst star formation history. However, stellar populations as old as 700 Myr …
Using a combination of deep MID-IR observations obtained by IRAC, MIPS and IRS on board Spitzer we investigate the MID-IR properties of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z~3, establish a better understanding of their nature and attempt a complete characterisation of the population. With deep mid-infrared and optical observations of ~1000 LBGs covered by IRAC/MIPS and from the ground respectively, we extend the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the LBGs to mid-infrared. Spitzer data reveal for the first time that the mid-infrared properties of the population are inhomogeneous ranging from th…
IRAC excels at detecting distant objects. Due to a combination of the shapes of the spectral energy distributions of galaxies and the low background achieved from space, IRAC reaches greater depth in comparable exposure time at 3.6 and 4.5 micron than any ground- or space-based facility currently can at 2.2 micron. Furthermore, the longer wavelengths probed by IRAC enable studies of the rest-frame optical and near-infrared light of galaxies and AGN to much higher redshift than is possible from the ground. This white paper explores the merits of different survey strategies for studying the dist…
We discuss spectral energy distributions, photometric redshifts, redshift distributions, luminosity functions, source-counts and the far infrared to optical luminosity ratio for sources in the SWIRE Legacy Survey. The spectral energy distributions of selected SWIRE sources are modelled in terms of a simple set of galaxy and quasar templates in the optical and near infrared, and with a set of dust emission templates (cirrus, M82 starburst, Arp 220 starburst, and AGN dust torus) in the mid infrared. The optical data, together with the IRAC 3.6 and 4.5 mu data, have been used to determine photome…
We report initial results from IRAC observations of four young stellar clusters. These regions are part of a larger Spitzer survey of 31 young stellar groups and clusters within 1 kpc of the Sun. In each of the four clusters, there are between 39 and 85 objects with colors inconsistent with reddened stellar photospheres. We identify these objects as young stars with significant emission from circumstellar dust. Applying an analysis developed in a companion paper (Allen et al. 2004), we classify these objects as either pre-main sequence stars with disks (class II) or protostellar objects (class…
Gravitational lensing by massive galaxy clusters is a powerful tool for the discovery and study of high redshift galaxies, including those at z>=6 likely responsible for cosmic re-ionization. Pello et al. recently used this technique to discover a candidate gravitationally magnified galaxy at z=10 behind the massive cluster lens Abell 1835 (z=0.25). We present new Keck (LRIS) and Spitzer Space Telescope (IRAC) observations of the z=10 candidate (hereafter #1916) together with a re-analysis of archival optical and near-infrared imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope and VLT respectively. Our a…
We study the nature of faint, red-selected galaxies at z ~ 2-3 using the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) and Spitzer IRAC photometry. We detect candidate galaxies to H < 26 mag, probing lower-luminosity (lower mass) galaxies at these redshifts. We identify 32 galaxies satisfying the (J - H) > 1.0 mag color selection, 16 of which have unblended [3.6um] and [4.5um] IRAC photometry. We derive photometric redshifts, masses, and stellar population parameters for these objects. We find that the selected objects span a diverse range of properties over a large range of redshifts, 1 < z < 3.5. A substan…
We present the identification of a bright submillimeter galaxy (SMG) in the field of Abell 2218. The galaxy has a spectroscopic redshift of ~4, and is currently the highest redshift SMG known. It is detected at all wavelengths from optical to submm, including the Spitzer IRAC bands. We discuss the properties of this galaxy, which is undergoing intense star formation at a rate~600 Msun/yr. We also compare the properties to those of radio-preselected submm-bright galaxies. The z~4 result extends the redshift distribution of SMGs.
(Abridged) This work explores the existence of high redshift massive galaxies unveiled with Spitzer+IRAC, but missed by conventional selection techniques based on optical and near-infrared observations. To this end, we use the multi-wavelength imaging data available for the GOODS-South field, and select a flux-limited sample from the IRAC 3.6um image to m(AB)<23.26. We confine our study to the galaxies undetected by the optical HST+ACS imaging and close to the detection limit of the K-band image (K>23.5 AB). Our selection unveiled 20 galaxies on which we performed a detailed photometric analys…
We exploit deep combined observations with Spitzer and Chandra of the SWIRE survey in the ELAIS-N1 region, to investigate the nature of the faint X-ray and IR sources in common, to identify AGN/starburst diagnostics, and to study the sources of the X-ray and IR cosmic backgrounds. In the 17'x17' area of the Chandra ACIS-I image there are 3400 SWIRE near-IR sources with 4 sigma detections in at least 2 IRAC bands and 988 sources detected at 24micron with MIPS brighter than 0.1 mJy. Of these, 102 IRAC and 59 MIPS sources have Chandra counterparts, out of a total of 122 X-ray sources present in t…
Approximately 20-30% of 1.4<z<2.5 galaxies with K<22 (Vega) detected with Spitzer MIPS at 24um show excess mid-IR emission relative to that expected based on the rates of star formation measured from other multiwavelength data. These galaxies also display some near-IR excess in Spitzer IRAC data, with a spectral energy distribution peaking longward of 1.6um in the rest frame, indicating the presence of warm-dust emission usually absent in star forming galaxies. Stacking Chandra data for the mid-IR excess galaxies yields a significant hard X-ray detection at rest-frame energies >6.2 keV. The sta…
(Abridged) High-redshift ultra luminous infrared galaxies contribute the bulk of the cosmic IR background and are the best candidates for very massive galaxies in formation at z>1.5. We present Keck/LRIS optical spectroscopy of 35 z>1.4 luminous IR galaxies in the Spitzer Wide-area Infra-Red Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) northern fields (Lockman Hole, ELAIS-N1, ELAIS-N2). The primary targets belong to the ``IR-peak'' class of galaxies, having the 1.6 micron (restframe) stellar feature detected in the IRAC Spitzer channels. The spectral energy distributions of the main targets are thoroughly anal…
