In Einstein's gravity, the entropy of horizons is proportional to their area. Several arguments given in the literature suggest that, in this context, both area and entropy should be quantized with an equally spaced spectrum for large quantum numbers. But in more general theories (like, for e.g, in the black hole solutions of Gauss-Bonnet or Lanczos-Lovelock gravity) the horizon entropy is \emph{not} proportional to area and the question arises as to which of the two (if at all) will have this property. We give a general argument that in all Lanczos-Lovelock theories of gravity, it is the \emph{entropy} that has equally spaced spectrum. In the case of Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we use the asymptotic form of quasi normal mode frequencies to explicitly demonstrate this result. Hence, the concept of a quantum of area in Einstein Hilbert (EH) gravity needs to be replaced by a concept of \emph{quantum of entropy} in a more general context.
The maximum entropy of a quantized surface is demonstrated to be proportional to the surface area in the classical limit. The result is valid in loop quantum gravity, and in a somewhat more general class of approaches to surface quantization. The maximum entropy is calculated explicitly for some specific cases.
We use the canonical quantization of spherically symetric dust universes, and calculate the expectation value of the quantized metric, $<Ψ|\hat{g}|Ψ>$. Though the classical solutions are singular, and the wave functions have no zero support on singular geometries, the expectation values are everywhere regular. For a quasi-classical (coherent) state, the metric expectation value describes a universe (or star) that collapses to a minimum radius, the Planck radius, and re-expands again.
The quantization of gravitational waves in the Milne universe is discussed. The relation between positive frequency functions of the gravitational waves in the Milne universe and those in the Minkowski universe is clarified. Implications to the one-bubble open inflation scenario are also discussed.
The semi-classical collapse, including lowest order back-reaction, of a thin shell of self-gravitating quantized matter is illustrated. The conditions for which self-gravitating matter forms a thin shell are first discussed and an effective Lagrangian for such matter is obtained. The matter-gravity system is then quantized, the semi-classical limit for gravitation is taken and the method of adiabatic invariants is applied to the resulting time dependent matter Hamiltonian. The governing equations are integrated numerically, for suitable initial conditions, in order to illustrate the effect of …
Recent attempts to calculate the black-hole entropy in loop quantum gravity are demonstrated to be erroneous. The correct solution of the problem is pointed out.
Ever since the pioneer works of Bekenstein and Hawking, black hole entropy has been known to have a quantum origin. Furthermore, it has long been argued by Bekenstein that entropy should be quantized in discrete (equidistant) steps given its identification with horizon area in (semi-)classical general relativity and the properties of area as an adiabatic invariant. This lead to the suggestion that black hole area should also be quantized in equidistant steps to account for the discrete black hole entropy. Here we shall show that loop quantum gravity, in which area is {\it not} quantized in equ…
We investigate the response of a model gravitational wave detector consisting of two particles to the quantized cylindrical gravitational waves and obtain a relation between the standard deviation of the distance between two particles and the distance from the source to the detector. It is found that the quantum effect carried by the cylindrical gravitational wave can be observed above Planck scale even though the source is as far as the cosmological horizon. The equation of motion for the change of the distance between two particles is obtained when the cylindrical gravitational waves pass. I…
In a recent paper we quantized the interaction of gravity with a Yang-Mills and Higgs field and obtained as a result a gravitational wave equation in a globally hyperbolic spacetime. Assuming that the Cauchy hypersurfaces are compact we proved a spectral resolution for the wave equation by applying the method of separation of variables. In this paper we extend the results to the case when the Cauchy hypersurfaces are non-compact by considering a Gelfand triplet and applying the nuclear spectral theorem.
We derive a formula for the nonequilibrium entropy of a classical stochastic field in terms of correlation functions of this field. The formalism is then applied to define the entropy of gravitational perturbations (both gravitational waves and density fluctuations). We calculate this entropy in a specific cosmological model (the inflationary Universe) and find that on scales of interest in cosmology the entropy in both density perturbations and gravitational waves exceeds the entropy of statistical fluctuations of the microwave background. The nonequilibrium entropy discussed here is a measur…
In the standard approach to defining a Planck scale where gravity is brought into the quantum domain, the Schwarzschild gravitational radius is set equal to the Compton wavelength. However, ignored thereby are the charge and spin, the fundamental quantized aspects of matter. The gravitational and null-surface radii of the Kerr-Newman metric are used to introduce spin and charge into a new extended Planck scale. The fine structure constant appears in the extended Planck mass and the recent discovery of the $α$ variation with the evolution of the universe adds further significance. An extended P…
The problem of cosmological particle creation for a spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic Universes is discussed in the context of f(R) theories of gravity. Different from cosmological models based on general relativity theory, it is found that a conformal invariant metric does not forbid the creation of massless particles during the early stages (radiation era) of the Universe.
We consider a quantized scalar field in a two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime with a moving mirror and propose a definition of moving-mirror entropy associated with temporarily inaccessible information about the future.
We derive the solutions of gravitational waves in the future (F) expanding and the past (P) shrinking Kanser spacetimes as well as in the left (L) and right (R) Rindler wedges in the Regge-Wheeler gauge. The solutions for all metric components are obtained in an analytic form in each region. We identify the master variables, which are equivalent to massless scalar fields, to describe the gravitational degrees of freedom for the odd parity and even parity modes under the transformation in the two-dimensional plane symmetric space. Then, the master variables are quantized, and we develop the qua…
In confrontation with serious and fundamental problems towards ultimate theory of quantum gravity and physics of Planck scale, we emphasize the importance of underlying noncommutative space-time such as Snyder's or Yang's Lorentz-covariant quantized space-time. The background of Bekenstein-Hawking's Area-entropy law and Holographic principle is now substantially understood in terms of {\it Kinematical} Holographic Relation [KHR], which holds in Yang's quantized space-time as the result of the kinematical reduction of spatial degrees of freedom caused by its own nature of noncommutative geometr…
Some approaches to quantization of the horizon area of black holes are discussed. The maximum entropy of a quantized surface is demonstrated to be proportional to the surface area in the classical limit. This result is valid for a rather general class of approaches to surface quantization. In the case of rotating black holes no satisfactory solution for the quantization problem has been found up to now.
We present a simple calculation leading to the quantum gravitationally-induced decoherence of a spatial superposition of a massive object in the linear coupling regime. The point of this calculation is to illustrate that the gravitationally-induced collapse could be of the same origin as any other collapse, i.e. due to the entanglement between the system (here a massive object) and its environment (in this case gravity, but it could well be the electromagnetic or any other field). We then point out that, in some cases, one has to be careful when concluding that matter-wave interference of larg…
We emphasized the importance of underlying noncommutative geometry or Lorenz-covariant quantized space-time towards ultimate theory of quantum gravity and Planck scale physics. We focused there our attention on the statistical and substantial understanding of Bekenstein-Hawking's Area-Entropy Law of black holes in terms of Kinematical Holographic Relation (KHR). KHR manifestly holds in Yang's quantized space-time as the result of kinematical reduction of spatial degrees of freedom caused by its own nature of noncommutative geometry and plays an important role in our approach without any recour…
When two objects have gravitational interaction between them, they are no longer independent of each other. In fact, there exists gravitational correlation between these two objects. Inspired by E. Verlinde's paper, we first calculate the entropy change of a system when gravity does positive work on this system. Based on the concept of gravitational correlation entropy, we prove that the entropy of a Schwarzschild black hole originates from the gravitational correlations between the interior matters of the black hole. By analyzing the gravitational correlation entropies in the process of Hawki…
We present the first application of deep learning forecasting for binary neutron stars, neutron star - black hole systems, and binary black hole mergers that span an eccentricity range e <= 0.9. We train neural networks that describe these astrophysical populations, and then test their performance by injecting simulated eccentric signals in advanced LIGO noise available at the \texttt{Gravitational Wave Open Science Center} to: 1) quantify how fast neural networks identify these signals before the binary components merge; 2) quantify how accurately neural networks estimate the time to merger o…
This work shows that the gravitational field is rather an unusual field and cannot be quantized due to the absence of a fermion charge carrier. When its existence is assumed quite strange results are obtained for its mass. And this means that the graviton does not exist either since bosons act between fermion states.
Under quite natural general assumptions, the following results are obtained. The maximum entropy of a quantized surface is demonstrated to be proportional to the surface area in the classical limit. The general structure of the horizon spectrum is found. The discrete spectrum of thermal radiation of a black hole Under quite natural general assumptions, the following results are obtained. The maximum entropy of a quantized surface is demonstrated to be proportional to the surface area in the classical limit. The general structure of the horizon spectrum is found. The discrete spectrum of therma…
The generalized gravitational entropy proposed in recent by Lewkowycz and Maldacena [1] is extended to the systems of Boson fields, Fermion fields and Maxwell fields which have arbitrary frequency and mode numbers on the BTZ spacetime. We find the associated regular wave solution in each case and use it to calculate the exact gravitational entropy. The results show that there is a threshold frequency below which the Fermion fields could not contribute the generalized gravitational entropy. Also, the static and zero-mode solutions have no entropy, contrast to that in scalar fields. We also find…
We introduce a 'quasi-topological` term [1] in D=1+1 dimensions and the entropy for black holes is calculated [2]. The source of entropy in this case is justified by a non-null stress-energy tensor.
We look at a gas of dust and investigate how its entropy evolves with time under a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse. We treat the problem perturbatively and find that the classical thermodynamic entropy does actually increase to first order when one allows for gravitational potential energy to be transferred to thermal energy during the collapse. Thus, in this situation there is no need to resort to the introduction of an intrinsic gravitational entropy in order to satisfy the second law of thermodynamics.
We consider the so-called semiclassical variant of general relativity, where gravitational field is not quantized but matter is quantized, for the simplest composite quantum body - a hydrogen atom. We create a stationary electron quantum state in the atom in the absence of gravitational field and study its time evolution in the presence of the field, using the local Lorentz invariance property of spacetime. It is shown that this state with a definite energy in the absence of gravitational field is not anymore a stationary state in the field. Therefore, quantum measurements of passive gravitati…
We study the contribution to entropy of Black Holes in D=2+1 dimensions from an extension of the Chern Simons theory including higher derivative in a curved space-time.
We analyze the problem of defining the black hole entropy when Chern-Simons terms are present in the action. Extending previous works, we define a general procedure, valid in any odd dimensions both for purely gravitational CS terms and for mixed gauge-gravitational ones. The final formula is very similar to Wald's original formula valid for covariant actions, with a significant modification. Notwithstanding an apparent violation of covariance we argue that the entropy formula is indeed covariant.
An alternative derivation of generalized gravitational entropy associated to co-dimension 2 'entangling' hypersurfaces is given. The approach is similar to the Jacobson-Myers 'Hamiltonian' method and it does not require computations on manifolds with conical singularities. It is demonstrated that the entangling surfaces should be extrema of the entropy functional. When our approach is applied to Lovelock theories of gravity the generalized entropy formula coincides with results derived by other methods.
It is shown here in the framework of standard General Relativity that the gravitational potential in static spacetime, equivalently the redshift factor, inside any kind of matter, can be derived from maximum entropy principle. It is used only the Hamiltonian constraint, without further invoking Einstein's equations or any new principle. The Newtonian potential arises from the same procedure.
In this work a relation between topology and thermodynamical features of gravitational instantons is shown. The expression for the Euler characteristic, through the Gauss-Bonnet integral, and the one for the entropy of gravitational instantons are proposed in a form that makes the relation between them self-evident. A new formulation of the Bekenstein-Hawking formula, where the entropy and the Euler characteristic are related by $S=χA/8$, is obtained. This formula provides the correct results for a wide class of gravitational instantons described by both spherically and axially symmetric metri…
We study the time evolution of the entropy of a collapsing spherical domain wall, from the point of view of an asymptotic observer, by investigating the entropy of the entire system (i.e. domain wall and radiation) and induced radiation alone during the collapse. By taking the difference, we find the entropy of the collapsing domain wall, since this is the object which will form a black hole. We find that for large values of time (times larger than $t/R_s\approx8$), the entropy of the collapsing domain wall is a constant, which is of the same order as the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
Regarding the significant interests in massive gravity and combining it with gravity's rainbow and also BTZ black holes, we apply the formalism introduced by Jiang and Han in order to investigate the quantization of the entropy of black holes. We show that the entropy of BTZ black holes in massive gravity's rainbow is quantized with equally spaced spectra and it depends on the black holes' properties including massive parameters, electrical charge, the cosmological constant and also rainbow functions. In addition, we show that quantization of the entropy results into the appearance of novel pr…
We define, by an integral of geometric quantities over a spherical shell of arbitrary radius, an invariant gravitational entropy. This definition relies on defining a gravitational energy and pressure, and it reduces at the horizon of both black branes and black holes to Wald's Noether charge entropy. We support the thermodynamic interpretation of the proposed entropy by showing that, for some cases, the field theory duals of the entropy, energy and pressure are the same as the corresponding quantities in the field theory. In this context, the Einstein equations are equivalent to the field the…
We calculate quantum gravitational corrections to the entropy of black holes using the Wald entropy formula within an effective field theory approach to quantum gravity. The corrections to the entropy are calculated to second order in curvature and we calculate a subset of those at third order. We show that, at third order in curvature, interesting issues appear that had not been considered previously in the literature. The fact that the Schwarzschild metric receives corrections at this order in the curvature expansion has important implications for the entropy calculation. Indeed, the horizon…
The underlying reason for the existence of gravitational entropy is traced to the impossibility of foliating topologically non-trivial Euclidean spacetimes with a time function to give a unitary Hamiltonian evolution. In $d$ dimensions the entropy can be expressed in terms of the $d-2$ obstructions to foliation, bolts and Misner strings, by a universal formula. We illustrate with a number of examples including spaces with nut charge. In these cases, the entropy is not just a quarter the area of the bolt, as it is for black holes.
In this paper we have examined the validity of some proposed definitions of gravitational entropy (GE) in the context of traversable wormhole solutions of the Einstein field equations. Here we have adopted two different proposals of GE and checked for their applicability in the case of these wormholes. The first one is the phenomenological approach proposed by Rudjord et al \cite{entropy1} and expanded by Romero et al in \cite{entropy2}, which is a purely geometric method of measuring gravitational entropy. The latter one is the Clifton-Ellis-Tavakol (CET) proposal \cite{CET} for the gravitati…
We consider generalized gravitational entropy in various higher derivative theories of gravity dual to four dimensional CFTs using the recently proposed regularization of squashed cones. We derive the universal terms in the entanglement entropy for spherical and cylindrical surfaces. This is achieved by constructing the Fefferman-Graham expansion for the leading order metrics for the bulk geometry and evaluating the generalized gravitational entropy. We further show that the Wald entropy evaluated in the bulk geometry constructed for the regularized squashed cones leads to the correct universa…
We consider the question of whether consistency arguments based on measurement theory show that the gravitational field must be quantized. Motivated by the argument of Eppley and Hannah, we apply a DeWitt-type measurement analysis to a coupled system that consists of a gravitational wave interacting with a mass cube. We also review the arguments of Eppley and Hannah and of DeWitt, and investigate a second model in which a gravitational wave interacts with a quantized scalar field. We argue that one cannot conclude from the existing gedanken experiments that gravity has to be quantized. Despite…
It has been shown by explicit and exact calculation that whenever we have taken the \emph{effects of stable thermal fluctuations} the entropy product formula should \emph{not be mass-independent} nor \emph{does it quantized}. It has been examined by giving some specific examples for non-rotating and rotating black hole.
We discuss the topological and global gauge properties of the formula for a black hole entropy due to a purely gravitational Chern-Simons term. We study under what topological and geometrical conditions this formula is well-defined. To this end we have to analyze the global properties of the Chern-Simons term itself and the quantization of its coupling. We show that in some cases the coupling quantization may interfere with the well-definiteness of the entropy formula.
We investigate the generalized gravitational entropy from total derivative terms in the gravitational action. Following the method of Lewkowycz and Maldacena, we find that the generalized gravitational entropy from total derivatives vanishes. We compare our results with the work of Astaneh, Patrushev, and Solodukhin. We find that if total derivatives produced nonzero entropy, the holographic and the field-theoretic universal terms of entanglement entropy would not match. Furthermore, the second law of thermodynamics could be violated if the entropy of total derivatives did not vanish.
We propose, in the framework of the fluid/gravity correspondence, a definition for a local horizon entropy current for higher-curvature gravitational theories. The current is well-defined to first order in fluid gradients for general gravity actions with an algebraic dependence on the Riemann tensor. As a detailed example, we consider five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with a mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons term. In this theory, we construct the proposed entropy current on a charged black-brane background, and show that it has a non-negative divergence. Moreover, a complete corres…
Using a simple analysis based on the measurement procedure for a quantized area we explain the 1/4 factor in the Bekenstein-Hawking black hole formula A/4 for the entropy.
We study the covariant entropy bound in the context of gravitational collapse. First, we discuss critically the heuristic arguments advanced by Bousso. Then we solve the problem through an exact model: a Tolman-Bondi dust shell collapsing into a Schwarzschild black hole. After the collapse, a new black hole with a larger mass is formed. The horizon, $L$, of the old black hole then terminates at the singularity. We show that the entropy crossing $L$ does not exceed a quarter of the area of the old horizon. Therefore, the covariant entropy bound is satisfied in this process.
The quantum entropy of the Kerr black hole arising from gravitational perturbation is investigated by using Null tetrad and t Hooftś brick-wall model. It is shown that effect of the gravitonś spins on the subleading correction is dependent of the square of the spins and the angular momentum per unit mass of the black hole, and contribution of the logarithmic term to the entropy will be positive, zero, and negative for different value of $a/r_+$.
In this paper we have examined the validity of a proposed definition of gravitational entropy in the context of accelerating black hole solutions of the Einstein field equations, which represent the realistic black hole solutions. We have adopted a phenomenological approach proposed in Rudjord et al [20] and expanded by Romero et al [21], in which the Weyl curvature hypothesis is tested against the expressions for the gravitational entropy. Considering the $C$-metric for the accelerating black holes, we have evaluated the gravitational entropy and the corresponding entropy density for four dif…
We compute the holographic entanglement entropy for the anomaly polynomial $\mathrm{Tr} R^2$ in 3+1 dimensions. Using the perturbative method developed for computing entanglement entropy for quantum field theories, we also compute the parity odd contribution to the entanglement entropy of the dual field theory that comes from a background gravitational Chern-Simons term. We find that, in leading order in the perturbation of the background geometry, the two contributions match except for a logarithmic divergent term on the field theory side. We interpret this extra contribution as encoding our …
We describe a simple way of obtaining horizon entropy using the approach based on the Virasoro algebra and central charge. We show that the Virasoro algebra defined by the Noether currents corresponding to the surface term of gravitational action, for the diffeomorphisms which leave the horizon structure unaltered, has a central extension that directly leads to the horizon entropy. In this approach there are no ambiguities in the calculation of the central charge. We explain why this approach is physically well motivated and could provide greater insight into the nature of horizon entropy.
We study the time evolution of the entropy of a collapsing charged spherical domain wall, from the point of view of an asymptotic observer, by investigating the entropy of the entire system (i.e. charged domain wall and radiation) and induced radiation alone during the collapse. By taking the difference, we find the entropy of the collapsing charged domain wall, since this is the object which will form a black hole. We find that for large values of time (times larger than $tf_-/R_+\approx8$), the entropy of the collapsing domain wall is a constant, which is of the same order as the Bekenstein-…
We quantize the Reissner-Nordström black hole using an adaptation of Kuchař's canonical decomposition of the Kruskal extension of the Schwarzschild black hole. The Wheeler-DeWitt equation turns into a functional Schroedinger equation in Gaussian time by coupling the gravitational field to a reference fluid or dust. The physical phase space of the theory is spanned by the mass, $M$, the charge, $Q$, the physical radius, $R$, the dust proper time, $τ$, and their canonical momenta. The exact solutions of the functional Schroedinger equation imply that the difference in the areas of the outer and …
An equidistant spectrum of the horizon area of a quantized black hole does not follow from the correspondence principle or from general statistical arguments. On the other hand, such a spectrum obtained in loop quantum gravity (LQG) either does not comply with the holographic bound, or demands a special choice of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter for the horizon surface, distinct from its value for other quantized surfaces. The problem of distinguishability of edges in LQG is discussed, with the following conclusion. Only under the assumption of partial distinguishability of the edges, the microca…
We use the intertwining properties of integral transformations to provide a compact proof of the holographic equivalence between the first law of entanglement entropy and the linearized gravitational equations, in the context of the AdS/CFT-correspondence. We build upon the framework developed by Faulkner et al. [1] using the the Wald formalism, and exploit the symmetries of the vacuum modular Hamiltonian of ball-shaped boundary regions.
A derivation of entropy from the expressions for two dimensional gravitation anomalies is given. Starting from the near horizon anomalous energy-momentum tensors corresponding to particular anomalies, the Virasoro algebra with central extension is obtained. The central charge is identified by comparing with the standard form of the algebra. Then the conserved charge in the ground state is computed. Finally, using the Cardy formula the entropy is obtained. Here both the vector and chiral theories are discussed.
The recently proposed gravitational entropy generalize the usual black hole entropy to Euclidean solutions without U(1) symmetry in the framework of Einstein gravity. The entropy of such smooth configuration is given by the area of minimal surface, therefore explaining the Ryu-Takayanagi formula of holographic entanglement entropy. In this note we investigate the generalized gravitational entropy for general Lovelock gravity in arbitrary dimensions. We use the replica trick and consider the Euclidean bulk spacetime with conical singularity localized at a codimension two surface. We obtain a co…
The gravitational instability of kinks is scrutinized in the context of information entropy, including the black hole formation near the scalar field critical collapse. The differential configurational entropy (DCE) is computed and examined for globally perturbed static kinks and the far-from-equilibrium kink solutions as well. In the case of the first kink, the DCE determines a critical value of the perturbation parameter regulating points of bifurcation that characterize a phase transition, whose supercritical range leads to collapse and subsequent black hole formation. For the far-from-equi…
It is often argued that {\it all the information of a gravitational theory is encoded in the surface term of the action}; which means one can find several physical quantities just from the surface term without incorporating the bulk part of the action. This has been observed in various instances; e.g. derivation of the Einstein's equations, surface term calculated on the horizon leads to entropy, etc. Here I investigate the role of it in the context of entropy function and entropy of extremal near horizon black holes. Considering only the Gibbons-Hawking-York (GHY) surface term to define an en…
Black hole entropy is a robust prediction of quantum gravity with no established phenomenological consequences to date. We use the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula and general-relativistic statistical mechanics to determine the probability distribution of random geometries uniformly sampled in phase space. We show that this statistics (in the limit $\hbar\to 0$) is relevant to large curvature perturbations, resulting in a population of primordial black holes with zero natal spin. In principle, the identification of such a population at LIGO, Virgo, and future gravitational wave observatories…
