Context. In 1985, at the end of the active phase 1977-1986, a broad (4000 km/s) Ly alpha line appeared in the symbiotic system CH Cygni that had never been observed previously. Aims. In this work we investigate the origin of this anomalous broad Ly alpha line. Methods. We suggest a new interpretation of the broad Ly alpha based on the theory of charge transfer reactions between ambient hydrogen atoms and post-shock protons at a strong shock front. Results. We have found that the broad Ly alpha line originated from the blast wave created by the outburst, while the contemporary optical and UV lines arose from the nebula downstream of the expanding shock in the colliding wind scenario.
Context. We analyse the line and continuum spectra of the symbiotic system CH Cygni. Aims. To show that the colliding-wind model is valid to explain this symbiotic star at different phases. Methods. Peculiar observed features such as flickering, radio variation, X-ray emission, as well as the distribution of the nebulae and shells throughout the system are investigated by modelling the spectra at different epochs. The models account consistently for shock and photoionization and are constrained by absolute fluxes. Results. We find that the reverse shock between the stars leads to the broad lin…
We have determined the spectral energy distribution at wavelengths between 6 cm and 0.85 mm for the proto-typical S(stellar)-type symbiotic star, CI Cygni, during quiescence. Data were obtained simultaneously with the Very Large Array and the SCUBA sub-millimetre (sub-mm) camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The data have allowed us to determine the free-free turnover frequency of the ionised component, facilitating a model-dependent estimate of the binary separation to compare with the known orbital parameters of CI Cug and to critically test the known models for radio emission from s…
VLA surface brightness and spectral index maps of the evolving extended emission of the triple symbiotic star CH Cygni are presented. These are derived from observations at 4.8, 8.4 and 14GHz between 1985 and 1999. The maps are dominated by thermal emission around the central bright peak of the nebula, but we also find unambiguous non-thermal emission associated with the extended regions. Our observations confirm that this is a jet. The central region has been associated with the stellar components through HST imaging. If the jets are due to ejection events at outburst, expansion velocities ar…
The ~15.1 years period found in the long-term UBV photoelectric and photographic photometry of the symbiotic nova V1016 Cyg is detected also in the (J-K) colour index and in the UV continuum and emission line fluxes from IUE and HUT spectra. It could be interpreted either as the effect of recurrent enhanced mass loss episodes from the Mira type variable companion to a hot component along its ultra-wide orbit (proposed from recent HST observations) or the true orbital period of the inner, unresolved binary of a triple system. A 410-day delay of the maximum of UV emission lines fluxes with respe…
VLA, MERLIN and Hubble Space Telescope imaging observations of the extended regions of the symbiotic system CH Cygni are analysed. These extensions are evidence of a strong collimation mechanism, probably an accretion disk surrounding the hot component of the system. Over 16 years (between 1985 and 2001) the general trend is that these jets are seen to precess. Fitting a simple ballistic model of matter ejection to the geometry of the extended regions suggests a period of 6520 +/- 150 days, with a precession cone opening angle of 35 +/- 1 degrees. This period is of the same order as that propo…
High-dispersion spectroscopic observations are used to refine orbital elements for the symbiotic binary CH Cyg. The current radial velocities, added to a previously published 13 year time series of infrared velocities for the M giant in the CH Cyg symbiotic system, more than double the length of the time series to 29 years. The two previously identified velocity periods are confirmed. The long period, revised to 15.6 +/- 0.1 yr, is shown to result from a binary orbit with a 0.7 solar mass white dwarf and 2 solar mass M giant. Mass transfer to the white dwarf is responsible for the symbiotic cl…
We present HST/WFPC2 images of the symbiotic star V1016 Cyg which, for the first time, directly explore the inner regions of the nebula to AU scales at optical wavelengths. They also suggest that the [OIII] 4959,5007 emission takes place in a bipolar outflow. We use these images to determine the position of the two stars and hence a projected binary separation of 84 AU (assuming a distance of 2 kpc) and a position angle of 143.5 degrees. Furthermore, we combine our images with VLA radio imaging which enables diagnostic tests to be applied and properties of the circumstellar nebula to be determ…
Most symbiotic stars consist of a white dwarf accreting material from the wind of a red giant. An increasing number of these objects have been found to produce jets. Analysis of archival Chandra data of the symbiotic system CH Cygni reveals faint extended emission to the south, aligned with the optical and radio jets seen in earlier HST and VLA observations. CH Cygni thus contains only the second known white dwarf with an X-ray jet, after R Aquarii. The X-rays from symbiotic-star jets appear to be produced when jet material is shock-heated following collision with surrounding gas, as with the …
We imaged the symbiotic star CH Cyg and two PSF calibration stars using the unique 6.5m MMT deformable secondary adaptive optics system. Our high-resolution (FWHM=0.3"), very high Strehl (98%+-2%) mid-infrared (9.8 and 11.7 um) images of CH Cyg allow us to probe finer length scales than ever before for this object. CH Cyg is significantly extended compared to our unresolved PSF calibration stars (Mu UMa and Alpha Her) at 9.8 and 11.7 um. We estimated the size of the extension by convolving a number of simple Gaussian models with the Mu UMa PSF and determining which model provided the best fit …
We present the high resolution spectra of the D type symbiotic stars V1016 Cygni and HM Sagittae obtained with the Bohyunsan Optical Echelle Spectrograph (BOES), and investigate the double-peaked asymmetric profiles of the Raman scattered O VI 6825. By adopting a wind accretion disk model, we assume that the O VI emission region is described by a Keplerian thin disk. The Raman scattering occurs in a neutral region near the giant, taking in the form of a slow stellar wind, part of which is ionized by the strong UV radiation from the hot white dwarf. Using a Monte Carlo technique, we compute the…
We present our spectroscopic data around H$β$ of the symbiotic star V1016 Cyg obtained with the Bohyunsan Echelle Spectrograph, in order to secure the broad emission feature at around 4850Å, which is formed through Raman scattering of He II $λ$ 972. The total cross section around Ly$γ$ is approximately given by $σ(λ)\simeq 1.7\times 10^{-28}[λ_{Lyγ}/(λ-λ_{Lyγ})]^2{\rm cm^2}$, with $λ_{Lyγ}$ being the line centre wavelength of Ly$γ$. We find a centre shift redward by an amount $Δλ= +0.64{\rm Å}$ in the Raman scattered He II $λ$ 4850. This redward centre shift is exactly analogous to the effect …
We present a spectrum of the symbiotic star V1016 Cyg observed with the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, in order to illustrate a method to measure the covering factor of the neutral scattering region around the giant component with respect to the hot emission region around the white dwarf component. In the spectrum, we find broad wings around H$α$ and a broad emission feature around 6545${\rm Å}$ that is blended with the [N II]$ λ$ 6548 line. These two features are proposed to be formed by Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen, where the incident radiation is proposed to be UV continuum ra…
CH Cygni is a symbiotic star consisting of an M giant and an accreting white dwarf, which is known to be a highly variable X-ray source with a complex, two-component, spectra. Here we report on two Suzaku observations of CH Cyg, taken in 2006 January and May, during which the system was seen to be in a soft X-ray bright, hard X-ray faint state. Based on the extraordinary strength of the 6.4 keV fluorescent Fe K-alpha line, we show that the hard X-rays observed with Suzaku are dominated by scattering.
The properties of the few symbiotic stars detected among the 66 binary S stars from the Henize sample are discussed. Two stars (Hen 18 and Hen 121) exhibit both a strong blue-violet continuum and strong H_alpha emission (FWHM of 70 km/s), whereas Hen 134 and 137 exhibit weak H_alpha emission. The H_alpha profiles are typical of non-dusty symbiotic stars belonging to class S-3 as defined by Van Winckel et al. (1993, A&AS 102, 401). In that class as in the Henize symbiotic S stars, He I, [N II] or [S II] emission lines are absent, suggesting that the nebular density is high but the excitation ra…
Aims: To model broad H-alpha wings observed in symbiotic binaries by an optically thin, bipolar stellar wind from their hot components as an alternative to that considering the Raman scattering of Ly-beta photons on atomic hydrogen. Methods: Profile-fitting analysis. Comparison of the observed broad H-alpha wings and their luminosity with those predicted by the model. Results: Synthetic H-alpha profiles fit excellently the observed wings for |RV| > 200 km/s in our sample of 10 symbiotic stars during the quiescent as well as active phases. The wing profile formed in the stellar wind can be appr…
We report on a high-resolution, spectroscopic stellar parameter and abundance analysis of a d' symbiotic star: the yellow component of StH\alpha190. This star has recently been discovered, and confirmed here, to be a rapidly rotating (vsini=100 km/s) subgiant, or giant, that exhibits radial-velocity variations of probably at least 40 km/s, indicating the presence of a companion (a white dwarf star). It is found that the cool stellar component has Teff=5300K and log g=3.0. The iron and calcium abundances are close to solar, however, barium is overabundant, relative to Fe and Ca, by about +0.5 d…
Nussbaumer et al. (1989) proposed that broad H$α$ wings can be formed through Raman scattering of Ly$β$ photons, and in this Letter we argue that the H$α$ wings prevalently seen in symbiotic stars may be indeed formed in this way. Assuming a flat incident UV radiation around Ly$β$, we generate template wing profiles around H$α$ that are formed through Raman scattering in a plane-parallel H~I region. We perform profile fitting analyses to show that the template wing profiles are in excellent agreement with the observed ones that are provided by van Winckel et al. (1993) and Ivison et al. (1994)…
In many symbiotic stars there appear broad wings around H alpha, of which the formation mechanism proposed thus far includes a fast outflow, the inner accretion disc motion, electron scattering and Raman scattering of Ly beta. We adopt a Monte Carlo technique to simulate the Raman scattering of UV photons that are converted into optical photons around H alpha forming broad wings, and compute its polarisation. Noting that many symbiotic stars exhibit a bipolar nebular morphology and polarisation flip in the red wing part of the Raman scattered O {\tiny{VI}} features, we assume that the neutral …
(Abridged) In the first paper of this series, we presented hydrodynamical simulations with radiative cooling of jet models with parameters representative of the symbiotic system MWC 560. These were jet simulations of a pulsed, initially underdense jet in a high-density ambient medium. They were stopped when the jet reached a length of 50 AU. There, however, a transition of the initially underdense jet towards an overdense jet should occur, which should result in changed kinematics. Therefore, we describe two hydrodynamical simulations with cooling beyond this density balance, one with the same…
High resolution (R~20,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N~100) spectra were collected for ~40 symbiotic stars with the Asiago echelle spectrograph over the same 8480-8740 Ang wavelength range covered by the ESA Cornerstone mission GAIA, centered on the near-IR CaII triplet and the head of the Paschen series. A large number (~140) of cool MKK giant and supergiant templates were observed with the same instrumentation to serve as a reference and classification grid. The spectra offer bright prospects in classifying and addressing the nature of the cool component of symbiotic stars (deriving T(eff), l…
We present the first grating-resolution X-ray spectra of the X-ray binary Cir X-1, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on Chandra. These reveal a rich set of lines from H-like and/or He-like Ne, Mg, Si, S and Fe detected with a high signal-to-noise ratio. The lines are broad (+/- 2000 km/s) and show P Cygni profiles. The absorption components of the lines extend to low velocity, and they have about the same widths and strengths as the corresponding emission components. The widths of the X-ray P Cygni lines are comparable to that of the broad component of the strong,…
As part of the Red MSX Source Survey of Massive Young Stellar Objects (MYSOs) we have conducted multi-wavelength follow up observations of the well-known object V645 Cygni. We present our data on this object, whose near-infrared spectrum is exceptional and place these in context with previous observations. Our observations of V645 Cyg included near/mid infrared imaging observations, 13CO 2-1 line observations and high signal-to-noise velocity resolved near-infrared spectroscopy. The spectrum shows P-Cygni hydrogen Brackett emission, consistent with a high velocity stellar wind. A red-shifted e…
Various types of galaxies observed in the cosmological scales show P-Cygni type profiles in the Lyman alpha emission lines. A Monte Carlo code is developed to investigate the Lyman alpha line transfer in an optically thick and moving medium with a careful consideration of the scattering in the damping wing. The main features in emergent line profiles include a primary emission peak in the red part and a much weaker secondary peak in the blue part. The primary peak recedes to the red and the width of the feature increases as $N_{HI}$ increases. The P-Cygni type profile in the Lyman alpha emissi…
We present an analysis of low- and medium resolution spectra of the very fast nova, Nova Cygni 2001/2 (V2275 Cyg) obtained at nine epochs in August, September and October, 2001. The expansion velocity from hydrogen Balmer lines is found to be 2100 km/s, although early H-alpha profile showed a weak feature at -3500 km/s, too. The overall appearance of the optical spectrum is dominated by broad lines of H, He and N, therefore, the star belongs to the ``He/N'' subclass of novae defined by Williams (1992). Interstellar lines and bands, as well as BV photometry taken from the literature yielded to …
We present H alpha emission line spectra of 7 post-AGB stars. Typically, they have a P-Cygni type profile with a very strong emission component and a relatively narrow absorption component. These lines are formed in the fast post-AGB wind which in most cases has a velocity of around 100 km/s. Hence the emission originates close to the central star and the absorption occurs in the fast wind itself or in the region where the fast wind sweeps up the slow wind. The emission profile has very broad wings. It is still unclear what causes these wings.
We present development of the collimated bipolar jets from the symbiotic prototype Z And that appeared and disappeared during its 2006 outburst. In 2006 July Z And reached its historical maximum at U ~ 8.0. During this period, rapid photometric variations with Dm ~ 0.06 mag on the timescale of hours developed. Simultaneously, high-velocity satellite components appeared on both sides of the H-alpha and H-beta emission line profiles. They were launched asymmetrically with the red/blue velocity ratio of 1.2 - 1.3. From about mid-August they became symmetric. Their spectral properties indicated ej…
Context: Optical nova lightcurves often have structures, such as rapid declines and recoveries, due to nebular or dusty phases of the ejecta. Nova Cygni 2006 (V2362 Cyg) underwent an unusual brightening after an early rapid decline. The shape of the lightcurve can be compared to that of V1493 Aql, but the whole event in that case was not as bright and only lasted a couple of weeks. V2362 Cyg had a moderately fast decline of t_2 = 9.0 before rebrightening, which lasted 250 days after maximum. Aims: We present an analysis of our own spectroscopic investigations in combination with AAVSO photomet…
We verify the nature of emission-line stars in the field of the open cluster NGC 6910. % Spectroscopy in the H-alpha region was obtained. Raw CCD frames of spectra of all stars fainter than V = 9 mag observed by us are significantly affected by nebular emission originating in the surrounding HII region IC 1318. After careful data reduction and subtraction of the nebular radiation we succeeded in obtaining reliable stellar spectra. We confirm that the star NGC 6910 37 is a Be star, and we have corrected the classification of V1973 Cyg from an Ae star to a normal A type star. Since the diffuse i…
We compute the polarization of the Lyman alpha line photons emerging from an anisotropically expanding and optically thick medium, which is expected to operate in many Lyman alpha emitting objects including the primeval galaxy DLA~2233+131 and Lyman break galaxies. In the case of a highly optically thick medium, the escape of resonance line photons is achieved by a large number of resonant local scatterings followed by a small number of scatterings in the damping wing. We show that some polarization can develop because the wing scatterings are coupled with strong spatial diffusion which depend…
Using a Monte Carlo technique, we have developed a 3D lyman-alpha radiation transfer code allowing for prescribed arbitrary hydrogen density, ionisation, temperature structures, and dust distribution, and arbitrary velocity fields and UV photon sources. We have examined the lyman-alpha line profiles predicted for several simple geometrical configurations and their dependence on the main input parameters. Overall, we find line profiles reaching from doubly peaked symmetric emission to symmetric Voigt (absorption) in static configurations with increasing dust content, and asymmetric red-(blue-) …
Two Chandra observations of the R Aqr symbiotic binary system taken 3.3 years apart show dramatic changes in the X-ray morphology and spectral characteristics in the inner 500 AU of this system. The morphology of the soft X-ray emission has evolved from a nearly circular region centered on the binary system to an hourglass shape that indicates the formation of a new southwest jet. Synchrotron radiation from the new jet in contemporaneous VLA radio spectra implies the physical conditions in the early stages of jet development are different from those in the more extended outer thermal jets know…
The yellow hypergiant Rho Cassiopeiae (F-G Ia0) has recently become very active with a tremendous outburst event in the fall of 2000. During the event the pulsating supergiant dimmed by more than a visual magnitude, while its effective temperature decreased from 7000 K to below 4000 K over about 200 d, and we directly observed the largest mass-loss rate of about 5% of the solar mass in a single stellar outburst so far. Over the past three years since the eruption we observed a very prominent inverse P Cygni profile in Balmer H alpha, signaling a strong collapse of the upper atmosphere, also ob…
We present the results of a high resolution UV 2-D spectroscopic survey of star forming galaxies observed with HST-STIS. Our main aim was to map the Lyman alpha profiles to learn about the gas kinematics and its relation with the escape of Lyman alpha photons and to detect extended Lyman alpha emission due to scattering in gaseous halos. We have combined our data with previously obtained UV spectroscopy on other three star-forming galaxies. We find that the P-Cygni profile is spatially extended, smooth and spans several kiloparsecs covering a region much larger than the starburst itself. We pr…
We present the results of a spectroscopic monitoring program (from 1998 to 2002) of the H-alpha emission strength in HDE 226868, the optical counterpart of the black hole binary, Cyg X-1. The H-alpha profiles consist of (1) a P Cygni component associated with the wind of the supergiant, (2) emission components that attain high velocity at the conjunctions and that probably form in enhanced outflows both towards and away from the black hole, and (3) an emission component that moves in anti-phase with the supergiant's motion. We argue that the third component forms in accreted gas near the black…
We present high-dispersion echelle spectroscopic observations and a narrow-band [N II] image of the remarkable jet-like features of He 2-90. They are detected in the echelle spectra in the H-alpha and [N II] lines but not in other nebular lines. The [N II]/H-alpha ratio is uniformly high, ~1. The observed kinematics reveals bipolar collimated outflows in the jet-like features and shows that the southeast (northwest) component expands towards (away from) the observer at a remarkably constant line-of-sight velocity, 26.0+-0.5 km/s. The observed expansion velocity and the opening angle of the jet…
The Lya line transfer in an extremely thick medium of neutral hydrogen is investigated by adopting an accelerating scheme in our Monte Carlo code to skip a large number of core or resonant scatterings. This scheme reduces computing time significantly with no sacrifice in the accuracy of the results. We applied this numerical method to the Lya transfer in a static, uniform, dustless, and plane-parallel medium. Two types of photon sources have been considered, the midplane source and the uniformly distributed sources. The emergent profiles show double peaks and absorption trough at the line-cent…
We present new red optical spectra of V592 Cas aimed at exploring the properties of the outflow of this system in a spectral region where the underlying white dwarf and the accretion disk do not contribute significantly to the observed absorption components of the H-alpha and HeI line profiles. We use the H-alpha emission line to study the wind, which appears as pronounced blueshifted P-Cygni absorption troughs whose low velocity end contaminates the blue side of the emission line profile. The wind appears to be episodic in nature, with multiple events reaching velocities of 5000km/sec in H-al…
We derive octupole-level secular perturbation equations for hierarchical triple systems, using classical Hamiltonian perturbation techniques. By extending previous work done to leading (quadrupole) order to octupole level (i.e., including terms of order alpha^3, where alpha = a_1/a_2 < 1 is the ratio of semimajor axes) we obtain expressions that are applicable to a much wider range of parameters. For triple systems containing a close inner binary, we also discuss the possible interaction between the classical Newtonian perturbations and the general relativistic precession of the inner orbit. I…
Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen converts the UV continuum around Ly$β$ into optical continuum around H$α$, and the basic atomic physics has been discussed in several works on symbiotic stars. We propose that the same process may operate in active galactic nuclei (AGN) and calculate the linear polarization of the broad emission lines Raman-scattered by a high column neutral hydrogen compnent. The conversion efficiency of the Raman scattering process is discussed and the expected scattered flux is computed using the spectral energy distribution of an AGN given by a typical power law. The hig…
We present and analyse spectra of the Type IIn supernova 1994W obtained between 18 and 202 days after explosion. During the first 100 days the line profiles are composed of three major components: (i) narrow P Cygni lines with absorption minima at -700 km/s; (ii) broad emission lines with BVZI ~4000 km/s; (iii) broad wings most apparent in H-alpha. These components are identified with the expanding circumstellar (CS) envelope (Sollerman, Cumming & Lundqvist 1998), shocked cool gas in the forward postshock region, and multiple Thomson scattering in the CS envelope, respectively. The absence of …
We present theoretical FeII emission line strengths for physical conditions typical of Active Galactic Nuclei with Broad-Line Regions. The FeII line strengths were computed with a precise treatment of radiative transfer using extensive and accurate atomic data from the Iron Project. Excitation mechanisms for the FeII emission included continuum fluorescence, collisional excitation, self-fluorescence amoung the FeII transitions, and fluorescent excitation by Lyman-alpha and Lyman-beta. A large FeII atomic model consisting of 827 fine structure levels (including states to E ~ 15 eV) was used to …
We present and analyse spectra of the Type IIn supernova 1994W obtained between 18 and 203 days after explosion. During the luminous phase (first 100 d) the line profiles are composed of three major components: (i) narrow P-Cygni lines with the absorption minima at -700 km/s; (ii) broad emission lines with BVZI ~4000 km/s; and (iii) broad, smooth wings, most apparent in H-alpha. These components are identified with an expanding circumstellar (CS) envelope, shocked cool gas in the forward post-shock region, and multiple Thomson scattering in the CS envelope, respectively. The absence of broad P…
We have observed variations in the optical emission lines from the X-ray binary Circinus X-1. These variations may be attributed both to orbital variations and to long term secular changes in line strength. We have detected double-peaked H-alpha emission lines on two occasions, providing the first direct evidence for an accretion disk in the system. The separation of the peaks was different on the two occasions, suggesting that the disk might have a different size. The equivalent width of the emission lines dropped by more than a factor of three between 1999 and 2000; this continues the trend …
We present an overview of radiative transfer modeling efforts to interpret spectra of a variety of stellar objects observed with FUSE. Detailed radiative transfer modeling of high ion emission line profiles of C III and O VI observed in the far-UV spectrum provides a powerful means to probe the thermal and dynamic properties of high-temperature plasmas in the atmospheres of stars. We model asymmetric emission lines of C III lam977 observed in spectra of luminous cool stars such as Alpha Aqr, to infer the wind- and microturbulence velocity structures of the upper chromosphere. Semi-empiric radi…
The high resolution spectra covering the wavelength range 4900 A to 8250 A of the hot post-AGB stars IRAS13266-5551 (CPD-55 5588) and IRAS17311-4924 (Hen3-1428) reveal absorption lines of CII, NII, OII, AlIII, SiIII and FeIII and a rich emission line spectrum consisting of HI, HeI, CII, NI, OI, MgII, AlII, SiII, VI, MnI, FeIII, [FeII] and [CrII]. The presence of [NII] and [OI] lines and absence of [OIII] indicate low excitation nebulae around these stars. The components of NaI absorption lines indicate the presence of neutral circumstellar envelopes in addition to the low excitation nebulae ar…
To trace the accretion and outflow processes around YSOs, diagnostic spectral lines such as the BrG 2.166 micron line are widely used, although due to a lack of spatial resolution, the origin of the line emission is still unclear. Employing the AU-scale spatial resolution which can be achieved with infrared long-baseline interferometry, we aim to distinguish between theoretical models which associate the BrG line emission with mass infall or mass outflow processes. Using the VLTI/AMBER instrument, we spatially and spectrally (R=1500) resolved the inner environment of five Herbig Ae/Be stars (H…
We present spectroscopic observations of the black-hole binary V4641 Sagittarii, obtained between 4th July 2004 and 28th March 2005, which cover the minor outburst of the star in early July 2004 and quiescence variations on 19 nights scattered over six months. During the outburst, the star peaked approximately 3 magnitudes brighter than usual, and our spectra were dominated by broad hydrogen, helium and iron emission lines. The very first spectra showed P Cygni profiles, which disappeared within a few hours, indicating rapid changes in matter ejection. The H-alpha line had multiple components,…
Most of the observed emission lines and continuum excess from young accreting low mass stars (Classical T Tauri stars -- CTTSs) take place in the star-disk or inner disk region. These regions have a complex emission topology still largely unknown. In this paper the magnetospheric accretion and inner wind contributions to the observed permitted He and H near infrared (NIR) lines of the bright southern CTTS RU Lupi are investigated for the first time. Previous optical observations of RU Lupi showed a large H-alpha profile, due to the emission from a wind in the line wings, and a micro-jet detect…
We present HST spectroscopy and imaging, along with new ground-based spectroscopy and ROSAT HRI imaging, of the He II emitting nebula N44C and its ionizing star. A GHRS spectrogram of the ionizing star yields a spectral type of about O7 for the star. The lack of P Cygni profiles for Si IV and C IV indicates that the star is not a supergiant. The nebular abundances in the ionized gas are consistent with average abundances for LMC H II regions, with the possible exception that nitrogen may be enhanced. Enrichment by a former evolved companion star is not evident. A long-slit echelle spectrogram …
We present an investigation of new optical and ultraviolet spectra of the mass donor star in the massive X-ray binary LS 5039. The optical band spectral line strengths indicate that the atmosphere is N-rich and C-poor, and we classify the stellar spectrum as type ON6.5 V((f)). The N-strong and C-weak pattern is also found in the stellar wind P Cygni lines of N V 1240 and C IV 1550. We suggest that the N-enrichment may result from internal mixing if the O-star was born as a rapid rotator, or the O-star may have accreted N-rich gas prior to a common-envelope interaction with the progenitor of th…
