Electrons from semileptonic decays of heavy-flavor mesons (D and B) allow to study the energy loss of heavy-quarks in nuclear collisions at sqrt(s) = 200 GeV at RHIC. Since pQCD calculations have shown that the crossing point where bottom decay electrons start to dominate over charm decay electrons is largely unknown, an urgent need arises to access the relative contributions independently. A correlation method is proposed to identify and separate charm and bottom production processes on a statistical basis through tagging of their decay electrons and open charmed mesons. The feasibility for this method is demonstrated using PYTHIA and MC@NLO simulations. The latter allows to estimate the complete NLO contributions, including e.g. gluon-splitting diagrams.
The production of charmonia in relativistic heavy-ion collisions is formulated within the framework of a quantum kinetic theory simultaneously accounting for breakup and recombination processes. The survival probability of J/Psi mesons is evaluated for a Mott-Hagedorn resonance gas, whereby the pattern of anomalous J/Psi suppression at CERN-SPS can be explained by a strong coupling to open-charm states and their in-medium modification. Recent data for charmonium suppression from Au-Au collisions at RHIC are discussed.
We discuss charmonium production in proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC energies under the assumption of xF and x2 scaling. We find that all the ambiguities due to energy loss are gone at this energy and therefore data will reveal the scaling law, if any. These p-A data will also be crucial to interpret nucleus-nucleus data with respect to a possible formation of a quark gluon plasma because the extrapolations for charmonium production from the present p-A data to RHIC energies, based on the two scaling laws, differ by a factor of four.
To extract information about polarized gluon distribution in the proton, charmed hadron, actually Λ_c^+, productions at RHIC experiment are studied. We found that the spin correlation asymmetry between the initial proton and the produced Λ_c^+ is enable us to distinguish parameterization models of polarized gluons.
We discuss aspects of open and hidden charm production in deuterium-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We describe calculations of the total $c \bar c$ cross section and the charm quark transverse momentum distributions. We next explain how shadowing and moderate nuclear absorption can explain the PHENIX $J/ψ$ dAu/$pp$ ratios and predict the combined effect of shadowing and absorption in 6.2 TeV d+Pb collisions.
We present results on rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of inclusive charm quark production in hadronic and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies, including the next-to-leading order, $O(α_s^3)$, radiative corrections and the nuclear shadowing effect. We determine the hadronic and the {\it effective} (in-medium) K-factor for the differential and total inclusive charm cross sections. We show that these K-factors have strong $p_T$ dependence. We discuss how measurements of charm production at RHIC and LHC can provide valuable information about the gluon density in a nucleus.
We present up-to-date QCD predictions for open charm and bottom production at RHIC in nucleon-nucleon collisions at \sqrt{S} = 200 GeV. The electron spectrum resulting from heavy flavor decays is also evaluated for direct comparison to the PHENIX and STAR data. These predictions seek to establish a rigorous benchmark, including the theoretical uncertainties, against which nuclear collision data can be compared to obtain evidence for nuclear effects.
We discuss aspects of open and hidden charm production in hadron-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. We first discuss the extraction of the total charm cross section in lower energy collisions and how it compares to next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics calculations. We then describe calculations of the transverse momentum distributions and their agreement with the shape of the measured STAR transverse momentum distributions. We next explain how shadowing and moderate nuclear absorption can explain the PHENIX $J/ψ$ dAu/$pp$ ratios.
We present results on rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of inclusive charm quark production in hadronic and heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies, including the next-to-leading order, $O(α_s^3)$, radiative corrections and the nuclear shadowing effect. We determine hadronic and nuclear K-factor for the differential and total inclusive cross sections for the charm production. We discuss theoretical uncertainties inherent in our calculation. In particular, we find that different extrapolations of gluon density to low-$x$ region introduce large theoretical uncertainty in the c…
Prompt neutrinos due to the decay of charmed mesons produced in the atmosphere from cosmic-ray and atmospheric nuclei interactions may be a significant source of background to ultra-high energy neutrino searches above 10 TeV. We re-evaluate this flux using updated charm production cross-sections based on QCD parameters, the charm quark mass, and the range for the factorization and renormalization scales that provide the best description of this data at fixed target experiments, at RHIC, and at LHC. We find that the prompt neutrino flux is reduced from previous results in the literature by a fa…
Recent experimental and theoretical studies suggest that the quarkonia suppression in a thermal QCD medium created at heavy ion collisions is a complex interplay of various physical processes. In this article we put together most of these processes in a unified way to calculate the charmonium survival probability (nuclear modification factor) at energies available at relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC) and large hadron collider (LHC) experiments. We have included shadowing as the dominant cold nuclear matter (CNM) effect. Further, gluo-dissociation and collision damping has been included wh…
Production of open and hidden charm hadrons in heavy ion collisions is considered within the statistical coalescence model. The charmed quark-antiquark pairs are assumed to be created at the initial stage of the reaction in hard parton collisions. The number of these pairs is conserved during the evolution of the system. At the hadronization stage, the charmed (anti)quarks are distributed among open and hidden charm hadrons in accordance with the laws of statistical mechanics. The model is in agreement with the experimental data on J/psi to Drell-Yan ratio in Pb+Pb collisions at SPS. This agre…
In order to extract information about behavior of polarized gluons in the nucleon, charmed hadron productions, i.e. D* meson and Lambda_c baryon productions, are studied in polarized pp reactions at BNL-RHIC energy. For these processes, the spin correlation asymmetry D_{LL} between the target proton and the produced charmed hadron, and its statistical sensitivity delta D_{LL} are calculated. From analyses on these processes, we found that the pseudo-rapidity distribution of D_{LL} in the limited transverse momentum region is quite effective for distinguishing the model of polarized gluons as w…
The impact of recent multi-loop calculations on precise determinations of charm- and bottom-quark masses and the strong coupling constant is discussed.
The implementation of the heavy quark spin symmetry in possible molecular states at the mixed bottom-charm threshold is somewhat different from that at the open charm or bottom thresholds. In particular it depends on two parameters describing separately the symmetry for the bottom and for charmed quarks. The corresponding spin structures of the $S$-wave molecular states of the meson pairs $B^{(*)} D^{(*)}$ are discussed as well as their consequences for properties of possible near-threshold resonances, analogs of the known charmonium-like and bottomonium-like $X$ and $Z$ states.
We present a study on the spectra and elliptic flow v2 for heavy flavor (charm and bottom) decayed electrons provided the relative contributions of charm and bottom hadrons from the PYTHIA calculations. We made a simultaneous fit to both measured non-photonic electron spectra and v2 distributions. The results suggest that the bottom contribution is not dominant for electron pt<5 GeV/c in the 200 GeV Au+Au collisions.
We study the correlation between the trigger $π$ and the associated $J/ψ$ on near and away sides in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. In the region of trigger momentum $p_t>4$ GeV/$c$, the $π$ spectrum is composed of thermal-shower and shower-shower recombinations in the frame work of the recombination model. We consider the azimuthal anisotropy in the quenched hard parton distribution and then calculate the elliptic flow parameter $v_2$ of charmed mesons ($J/ψ$, $D^0$ and $D_s$) for different centralities.
In this article, we perform a systematic study of the mass spectrum of the vector hidden charmed and bottomed tetraquark states using the QCD sum rules.
Expectations for the momentum distribution of nonperturbative charm and bottom quarks in the proton are derived from a variety of models for the Fock space wave function on the light cone.
Measurements of dilepton production from charm decay and Drell-Yan processes respectively probe the gluon and sea quark distributions in hadronic collisions. In nucleus-nucleus collisions, these hard scattering processes constitute a `background' to thermal contributions from the hot matter produced by the collision. To determine the magnitude and behavior of this background, we calculate the hard scattering contribution to dilepton production in nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC at next to leading order in perturbative QCD. Invariant mass, rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are p…
With the negative sign for $\sqrt m_s$, the quarks strange, charm and bottom make a Koide tuple. It continues the c-b-t tuple previously found by Rodejohann and Zhang and, more peculiar, it is quasi-orthogonal to the original lepton triplet.
The masses of heavy quark baryons are studied in an expansion in 1/N_c, SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking, and heavy-quark symmetry breaking. Very accurate model-independent mass relations are obtained for charm and bottom baryons.
We study the production of charmonia and charmed hadrons in nucleus-nucleus collisions at SPS, RHIC, and LHC energies within the framework of the statistical hadronization model. Results from this model are compared to the measured yields and centrality dependence of J/psi production at SPS and RHIC energies. We explore and contrast the centrality dependence of the production of mesons with open and hidden charm at SPS, RHIC, and LHC. The sensitivity of the results to various input parameters is analyzed in detail for RHIC energy.
In this article, the three point QCD sum rules is used to compute the strong coupling constants of vertices containing the strange bottomed ( charmed ) mesons with pion. The coupling constants are calculated, when both the bottom ( charm ) and pion states are off-shell. A comparison of the obtained results of coupling constants with the existing predictions is also made. Key words: strong coupling constant, meson, QCD sum rules, bottom, charm.
We use the method of QCD Sum Rules to estimate the masses of the charm baryon, $Λ^+_c$, bottom baryon $Λ^0_b$, strange baryon $Λ^0_s$ and compare them to their experimental values.
We give the first estimate of charmless scalar meson emitting weak hadronic decays of 0 $\Lembda_{b}^{0}$, $Ξ_{b}^{0}$ and $Ξ_{b}^{-}$ bottom baryons employing the pole model and consequently predict their branching ratios.
Physics of charmonium suppression in nuclear collisions drastically changes between the energies of SPS and RHIC. Mechanisms suppressing charmonia at SPS are reviewed, neither of which is important at RHIC. On the other hand, coherence, or shadowing of c-quarks and gluons barely seen at SPS, become a dominant effect at RHIC providing a much stronger suppression. A onset of coherence at Fermilab energies explains the observed cross section ratio steeply falling at large Feynman x_F. In nuclear collisions variation of charmonium suppression with x_F suggests a sensitive probe for QGP.
LHC predictions for the charm and bottom nuclear modification factors using pQCD and AdS/CFT drag energy loss models are given. We show that a new observable, the double ratio of charm to bottom nuclear modification factors, allows for easy experimental distinction between the two classes of energy loss models.
In this article, we study the mass spectrum of the scalar hidden charm and hidden bottom tetraquark states which consist of the axial-axial type and the vector-vector type diquark pairs with the QCD sum rules.
We present a detailed discussion on the doubly charmed baryon $Ξ_{cc}$ production at the RHIC and LHC via the proton-nucleus ($p$-N) and nucleus-nucleus (N-N) collision modes. The extrinsic charm mechanism via the subprocesses $g+c\to (cc)[n]+\bar{c}$ and $c+c\to (cc)[n]+g$ together with the gluon-gluon fusion mechanism via the subprocess $g+g\to(cc)[n]+\bar{c}+\bar{c}$ have been taken into consideration, where the intermediate diquark is in $[n]=[^1S_0]_{\bf 6}$-state or $[^3S_1]_{\bar{\bf 3}}$-state, respectively. Total and differential cross sections have been discussed under various collis…
We present a study on the spectra for heavy flavor (charm and bottom) decayed electrons in 200 GeV $p+p$ collisions and provide the relative contributions of charm and bottom hadrons from the PYTHIA calculations. The results suggest that the crossing point of the electron spectra from charm and bottom decays is above 7 GeV/$c$ and bottom contribution is not dominant for electron $p_{T}<3$ GeV/$c$. The upper limit of the relative cross section ratio is reported as $σ_{b\bar{b}}/σ_{c\bar{c}}\leq(0.49\pm0.09\pm0.09)%$. We also compare the $v_2$ distribution from simulation to the experimental dat…
The cross sections for charm and bottom quark production in the threshold region are discussed. We consider the effects of an all order resummation of initial state soft-plus-virtual gluon radiation on the total cross sections compared to the order $α_s^3$ results.
We perform a field-theoretical study of possible deuteron-like molecules with both open charm and bottom, using the Heavy-Meson Effective Theory. In this approach, we analyze the parameter space of the coupling constants and discuss the formation of loosely-bound $D^{(*)} B^{(*)} $-states. We estimate their masses and other properties.
We study $b\bar{b}$ and $c\bar{c}$ production and the influence of nuclear shadowing at LHC and RHIC energies. We find a significant reduction in the production cross section of both charm and bottom at RHIC and LHC. Bound states such as $Υ$ and $J/Ψ$ are suppressed by this reduction in the charm production cross sections. Therefore, $J/Ψ$ suppression may not be useful as a signature for the quark gluon plasma.
In this work, using the covariant light front approach with conventional vertex functions, we estimate the production rates of $D$-wave charmed/charmed-strange mesons via $B_{(s)}$ semileptonic decays. Due to these calculated considerable production rates, it is possible to experimentally search for $D$-wave charmed/charmed-strange mesons via the semileptonic decays, which may provide extra approach to explore $D$-wave charmed/charmed-strange mesons.
We update the experimental moments for the charm quark as computed in arXiv:hep-ph/0702103. and used in arXiv:0907.2110 and arXiv:1010.6157 for the determination of the charm-quark mass. The new value for the MSbar charm-quark mass reads mc(3GeV)=0.993+/-0.008 GeV.
We provide results for the open-flavor strong decays of open-charm ($D$ and $D_{\rm s}$) and open-bottom ($B$, $B_{\rm s}$ and $B_{\rm c}$) mesons. The decays are calculated in a modified version of the $^3P_0$ pair-creation model, assuming harmonic oscillator wave functions. The spectra of open-charm and open-bottom mesons used in the calculations are computed within Godfrey and Isgur's relativized quark model. Quantum number assignments are also provided. Our results are compared with the existing experimental data.
We estimate the strong coupling constants of charmed and bottom mesons $ D_{(s)}^* $, $ D_{(s)1} $, $ B_{(s)}^* $, and $ B_{(s)1} $ with light vector mesons $ ρ$, $ ω$, $ K^* $, and $ ϕ$ within the framework of light-cone QCD sum rules. We compare our estimations to the ones predicted by other approaches.
We discuss the renormalization and factorization scale dependence of charm and bottom production both at fixed-target energies and at present and future colliders. We investigate whether distributions calculable at leading order can be extrapolated to next-to-leading order by a constant multiplicative factor.
The results for observables of semileptonic decays of bottom and charm baryons (Isgur-Wise functions, decay rates, distributions, asymmetry parameters) are given within relativistic quark model. A comparison with recent experimental data (CLEO Collaboration) is made.
The meaning and the extraction of heavy quark masses are discussed. A simple production model is presented which incorporates the running of the heavy quark mass into perturbative calculations. The model offers the possibilities of (i) understanding the differing charmed mass values extracted from different experiments, (ii) determining the short--distance mass relevent to quark mass matrix and mixing angle studies, and (iii) determining the long--distance charm mass, which determines the charm quark threshold and sensitively affects the extraction of $\sin^2θ_w $. Threshold and forward angle …
The perturbative QCD fragmentation functions can be applied phenomenologically as a model for charm and bottom quark fragmentation into heavy-light mesons. The predictions by this model on the observables $P_V$ and $\langle z \rangle$ for $D-D^*$ and $B-B^*$ systems are compared with experimental data.
New data for the total cross section sigma(e^+e^- --> hadrons) in the charm and bottom threshold region are combined with an improved theoretical analysis, which includes recent four-loop calculations, to determine the short distance \bar{MS} charm and bottom quark masses. The final result for the \bar{MS}-masses, m_c(3 GeV)=0.986(13) GeV and m_b(10 GeV)=3.609(25) GeV is consistent with but significantly more precise than a similar previous study.
In this article, we study the mass spectrum of the scalar hidden charm and bottom tetraquark states with the QCD sum rules. The numerical results are compared with the corresponding ones from a relativistic quark model based on a quasipotential approach in QCD. The relevant values from the constituent diquark model based on the constituent diquark masses and the spin-spin interactions are also discussed.
Exclusive nonleptonic decays of bottom baryons to charm baryons and pseudoscalar light mesons are analyzed within a relativistic three-quark model. We include factorizing as well as nonfactorizing contributions to the decay amplitudes. The total contribution of the nonfactorizing diagrams amount up to 30% of the factorizing contributions in amplitude. We present detailed predictions for rates and asymmetry parameters.
The effects of the finite charm quark mass on bottom quark mass determinations from $Υ$ sum rules are examined in detail. The charm quark mass effects are calculated at next-to-next-to-leading order in the non-relativistic power counting for the $Υ$ sum rules and at order $α_s^3$ for the determination of the bottom MSbar mass. For the bottom 1S mass, which is extracted from the $Υ$ sum rules directly, we obtain $M_b^{1S}=4.69\pm 0.03$ GeV with negligible correlation to the value of the strong coupling. For the bottom MSbar mass we obtain $\bar M_b(\bar M_b) = 4.17\pm 0.05$ GeV taking $α_s^{(n_…
Two body nonleptonic weak decays of bottom mesons to a pseudoscalar meson and an axial-vector meson involving charmed states are studied using the non-relativistic quark model. We calculate the branching ratios of these decays by employing the factorization hypothesis. Obtained results are in good agreement with the existing experimental data. We also calculated the branching ratios in the light of heavy quark symmetry constraints and compared with the exiting theoretical analyses.
Distributions of charged leptons in semileptonic $Λ_c$ and $Λ_b$ decays can be used as spin analysers for the corresponding charm and bottom quarks. QCD corrections to the energy spectra of charged leptons have been given in the literature as well as the corrections to the angular dependence for polarised up-type quarks. The analogous formulae are derived also for polarised down-type quarks. These results are applied to the decays of polarised charm and bottom quarks. The corrections to the asymmetries are found to be small for charm decays. For bottom decays they exhibit a non-trivial depende…
In two recent papers, we used the hadro-quarkonium model to study the properties of hidden-charm and bottom tetraquarks and pentaquarks. Here, we extend the previous results and calculate the masses of heavy-quarkonium-kaon/hyperon systems. We also compute the spectrum of hidden-charm and bottom tetraquarks with strangeness in the compact tetraquark (diquark-antidiquark) model. If heavy-light exotic systems with non-null strangeness content were to be observed experimentally, it might be possible to distinguish among the large variety of available theoretical pictures for tetra- and pentaquark…
We compute the decoupling relations for the strong coupling, the light quark masses, the gauge-fixing parameter, and the light fields in QCD with heavy charm and bottom quarks to three-loop accuracy taking into account the exact dependence on $m_c/m_b$. The application of a low-energy theorem allows the extraction of the three-loop effective Higgs-gluon coupling valid for extensions of the Standard Model with additional heavy quarks from the decoupling constant of $α_s$.
We consider the production of the open charm and J/psi mesons in heavy ion collisions at BNL RHIC. We discuss several recently developed pictures for J/psi production and argue that a measurement at RHIC energies is crucial for disentangling these different descriptions.
This paper is devoted to the leading twist exclusive bottomonia decays with double charmonium in the final state. Using models of the twist-2 charmonia distribution amplitudes the widths of these decays are calculated within light cone formalism. In addition, the processes under consideration are studied within nonrelativistic QCD. In our analysis we have found that the production of some of the $P$-wave charmonia mesons with $L_z \neq 0$ is allowed already at the leading twist approximation. This means that the selection rules which predict the suppression of such decays are violated. The mec…
I discuss advances in the determination of strange, charm, and bottom quark parton distribution functions obtained in the CTEQ6.5 and CTEQ6.6 global analyses. These results affect electroweak precision observables and certain new physics searches at the Large Hadron Collider. I focus, in particular, on high-energy implications of the consistent treatment of heavy-quark threshold effects in DIS in the general-mass factorization scheme; an independent parametrization for the strangeness PDF; and the possible presence of nonperturbative ("intrinsic") charm.
I review the color dipole formulation of heavy quark production in the light of recent RHIC data. Since charm and bottom production directly probe the gluon density, these processes allow one to study shadowing and parton saturation at RHIC and LHC. The dipole approach provides a convenient framework to calculate these nuclear effects. I present numerical results for open charm and bottom production in proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions and discuss transverse momentum broadening of heavy quarkonia.
Integrated and differential $J/ψ R_{AA}$ are systematically studied in Au-Au collisions at RHIC-BES energies in a transport approach, including cold and hot nuclear effects respectively in the initial condition and the collision terms. With decreasing energy, while the temperature, life time and size of the QGP fireball decrease, the nuclear absorption of the initially produced charmonia is more and more strong, and the nuclear shadowing effect on charmonium regeneration goes to anti-shadowing first and then to shadowing again. As a competition between the cold and hot nuclear effects, the QGP…
The spectra of lepton pairs from correlated open charm and bottom decays in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions are calculated. Our approach includes energy loss effects of heavy quarks in deconfined matter which are determined by temperature and density of the expanding parton medium. We find a noticeable suppression of the initial transverse momentum spectrum of heavy quarks due to the energy loss at LHC conditions. Within the central rapidity covered by the ALICE detector system, the dominant contribution from bottom decays to the high invariant mass dielectron spectrum is predicted.
We use the Field Correlator Method in QCD to calculate the masses of $Σ_c$, $Ξ_c$ and recently observed $Σ_b$, $Ξ_b$ baryons and their orbital excitations.
The mass spectrum of S and P-wave mesons containing a single heavy quark has been computed using quenched lattice nonrelativistic QCD. Numerical results have been obtained at first, second and third order in the heavy quark expansion, so convergence can be discussed. The computed spectrum of charmed and bottom mesons is compared to existing model calculations and experimental data.
Recent theoretical and experimental improvements in the determination of charm and bottom quark masses are discussed. The final results, $m_c(3 \text{GeV})=986(13) $MeV and $m_b(m_b)=4163(16) $MeV represent, together with a closely related lattice determination $m_c(3 {\rm GeV})=986(10) $MeV, the presently most precise determinations of these two fundamental Standard Model parameters. A critical analysis of the theoretical and experimental uncertainties is presented.
A kinetic equation approach is applied to model anomalous J/psi suppression at RHIC and SPS by absorption in a hadron resonance gas which successfully describes statistical hadron production in both experiments. The puzzling rapidity dependence of the PHENIX data is reproduced as a geometric effect due to a longer absorption path for J/psi production at forward rapidity.
