In the early days of high temperature superconductivity it was already recognized that magnetic properties of these materials are intimately related to the superconducting ones . When doped, the long-range ordered antiferromagnetic background of pristine copper-oxide insulators melts away and makes room for a spin liquid and superconductivity. By resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in the soft regime we probe the hitherto inaccessible dynamical multiple-spin correlations of the magnetic background in a series of parent compounds and in high Tc materials [NCCO (Nd2-xCexCuO4) and LSCO (La2-xSrxCuO4)]. High resolution measurements allows the clear observation of dispersing bimagnon excitations. In the undoped compounds the theory, fits the data on these coherent spin excitations without free parameters. In nearly optimally doped LSCO we observe the appearance of a new collective excitation at an energy of 250 +/- 60 meV having the signature of a coupled bimagnon-charge mode. It has a strongly reduced dispersion and lies in a so far unexplored region of momentum and energy space in the mid-infrared.
We present RIXS data at O K edge from La2-xSrxCuO4 vs. doping between x=0.10 and x=0.22 with attention to the magnetic excitations in the Mid-Infrared region. The sampling done by RIXS is the same as in the undoped cuprates provided the excitation is at the first pre-peak induced by doping. Note that this excitation energy is about 1.5 eV lower than that needed to see bimagnons in the parent compound. This approach allows the study of the upper region of the bimagnon continuum around 450 meV within about one third of the Brilluoin Zone around Γ. The results show the presence of damped bimagnon…
We investigated the doping dependence of magnetic excitations in the lightly doped cuprate La2-xSrxCuO4 via combined studies of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu L3-edge and theoretical calculations. With increasing doping, the magnon dispersion is found to be essentially unchanged, but the spectral width broadens and the spectral weight varies differently at different momenta. Near the Brillouin zone center, we directly observe bimagnon excitations which possess the same energy scale and doping dependence as previously observed by Raman spectroscopy. They disperse weakly in…
We assess the capabilities of magnetic Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the O $K$ edge in undoped cuprates by taking La_{2}CuO_{4} as a benchmark case, based on a series of RIXS measurements that we present here. By combining the experimental results with basic theory we point out the fingerprints of bimagnon in the O $K$ edge RIXS spectra. These are a dominant peak around 450 meV, the almost complete absence of dispersion both with $π$ and $σ$ polarization and the almost constant intensity vs. the transferred momentum with $σ$ polarization. This behavior is quite different from C…
Using low-energy projection of the one-band t-t'-t"-Hubbard model we derive an effective spin-Hamiltonian and its spin-wave expansion to order 1/S. We fit the spin-wave dispersion of several parent compounds to the high-temperature superconducting cuprates: La2CuO4, Sr2CuO2Cl2 and Bi2Sr2YCu2O8. Our accurate quantitative determination of the one-band Hubbard model parameters allows prediction and comparison to experimental results of measurable quantities such as staggered moment, double occupancy density, spin-wave velocity and bimagnon excitation spectrum and density of states, which is discu…
The optical conductivity sigma (omega) of undoped YBa2Cu3O6 is studied in detail in the mid-infrared range. Substitutions on all but the Ba site are used to identify the prominent absorption processes at 2800 and 3800 cm^-1. Experimental evidence for bimagnon-plus-phonon absorption is collected. A more critical analysis of the lineshape and the spectral weight reveals the limits of this approach. Although phonon-2-magnon multiple scattering seems to reproduce the lineshape, the necessary coupling is unrealistically large. The strong increase of high frequency spectral weight with increasing te…
We develop a formalism for calculating resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra in systems of itinerant electrons with arbitrary band structures, accounting for the effect of the positively-charged core hole exactly. We apply this formalism to the cuprate superconductors and obtain quantitative agreement with experimental data over a wide range of dopings. We reproduce the dispersing peaks and non-trivial polarization dependence found in RIXS experiments on several materials. Thus we demonstrate that features previously attributed to collective magnetic modes can be explained by band…

We investigate the effect of elastic forward scattering on the ARPES spectrum of the cuprate superconductors. In the normal state, small angle scattering from out-of-plane impurities is thought to broaden the ARPES spectral response with minimal effect on the resistivity or the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. Here we explore how such forward scattering affects the ARPES spectrum in the d-wave superconducting state. Away from the nodal direction, the one-electron impurity scattering rate is found to be suppressed as $ω$ approaches the gap edge by a cancellation between normal and …
The excitation spectrum in single-layered Nd(0.33)Sr(1.67)MnO4 and Pr(0.33)Ca(1.67)MnO4 resembles the hourglass-like excitation dispersion seen in various cuprates superconductors. However, our spin-wave dispersion in Pr(0.33)Ca(1.67)MnO4, which exhibits a large correlation length of the magnetic order, showing outward-dispersing branches starting from the incommensurate zone-centres. The magnetic correlation length is identified as the decisive parameter to suppress this branches and generating an correct hourglass shape.
High resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) has proven particularly effective in the determination of crystal field and spin excitations in cuprates. Its strength lies in the large Cu $L_{3}$ resonance and in the fact that the scattering cross section follows quite closely the single-ion model predictions, both in the insulating parent compounds and in the superconducting doped materials. However, the spectra become increasingly broader with (hole) doping, hence resolving and assigning spectral features has proven challenging even with the highest energy resolution experimentall…
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Ba(Fe$_{0.963}$Ni$_{0.037}$)$_2$As$_2$ manifest a neutron spin resonance in the superconducting state with anisotropic dispersion within the Fe layer. Whereas the resonance is sharply peaked at Q$_{AFM}$ along the orthorhombic a axis, the resonance disperses upwards away from Q$_{AFM}$ along the b axis. In contrast to the downward dispersing resonance and hour-glass shape of the spin excitations in superconducting cuprates, the resonance in electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ compounds possesses a magnon-like upwards dispersion.
The study of elementary bosonic excitations is essential toward a complete description of quantum electronic solids. In this context, resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) has recently risen to becoming a versatile probe of electronic excitations in strongly correlated electron systems. The nature of the radiation-matter interaction endows RIXS with the ability to resolve the charge, spin and orbital nature of individual excitations. However, this capability has been only marginally explored to date. Here, we demonstrate a systematic method for the extraction of the character of excitatio…
We probe the collective magnetic modes of La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO) and underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) by momentum resolved Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the Cu $L_3$ edge. In LCO the single magnon dispersion measured by RIXS coincides with the one determined by inelastic neutron scattering. For LSCO the spin dynamics shows a branch dispersing up to $\sim$400 meV coexisting with a branch at lower energy. Only the latter has been observed with neutrons so far and is considered a key signature of doped cuprates. The presence of the high-energy branch indicates that LSCO is i…
We determine the local density of states (LDOS) of one-dimensional incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) states in the presence of a strong impurity potential, which is modeled by a boundary. We find that the CDW gets pinned at the impurity, which results in a singularity in the Fourier transform of the LDOS at momentum 2k_F. At energies above the spin gap we observe dispersing features associated with the spin and charge degrees of freedom respectively. In the presence of an impurity magnetic field we observe the formation of a bound state localized at the impurity. All of our results carr…
The evolution of electronic (spin and charge) excitations upon carrier doping is an extremely important issue in superconducting layered cuprates and the knowledge of its asymmetry between electron- and hole-dopings is still fragmentary. Here we combine x-ray and neutron inelastic scattering measurements to track the doping dependence of both spin and charge excitations in electron-doped materials. Copper L3 resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra show that magnetic excitations shift to higher energy upon doping. Their dispersion becomes steeper near the magnetic zone center and deeply mix…
