We present preliminary results on a study based on contemporaneous photometric and spectroscopic observations of the young K0-1V star SAO 51891. We find that SAO 51891, a possible member of the Local Association, shows emission cores in the CaII H&K and fillings in the Halpha and CaII Infra-Red Triplet (IRT) lines. Moreover, we detect absorption lines of HeI-D3 and LiI and measure a v sini of 19 km/s. A clear rotational modulation of both the light and the photospheric temperature, due to photospheric spots, has been detected. The net Halpha chromospheric emission does not show any detectable variation, while the CaII IRT emission displays a fair modulation.
The radio emission from the youngest known Planetary nebula, SAO244567, has been mapped at 20,13, 6, 3.6 and 1.2 cm by using the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). These observations constitute the first detailed radio study of this very interesting object, as they allow us to obtain, for the first time, the radio morphology of the source and to compute the radio spectrum up to 18752 MHz.
The radio emission from the youngest known Planetary nebula, SAO244567, has been mapped at 1384, 2368, 4800, 8640, 16832 and 18752 MHz by using the Australian Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). These observations constitute the first detailed radio study of this very interesting object, as they allow us to obtain the overall radio morphology of the source and to compute, for the first time, the radio spectrum up to millimetre range. Radio emission is consistent with free-free from a wind-like shell, which is also the region where most of the [OIII] comes from as revealed by HST images. Physical p…
Analysis of the low resolution UV(IUE) spectra of 15 hot post-AGB candidates is presented. The UV(IUE) spectra of 10 stars suggest partial obscuration of the hot stars due to circumstellar dust. The reddened continua of these 10 stars were used to model and estimate the circumstellar extinction. The circumstellar extinction law was found to be linear in $λ^{-1}$ in the case of IRAS13266-5551 (CPD-55 5588), IRAS14331-6435 (Hen3-1013), IRAS16206-5956 (SAO 243756), IRAS17074-1845 (Hen3-1347), IRAS17311-4924 (Hen3-1428), IRAS18023-3409 (LSS 4634), IRAS18062+2410 (SAO 85766), IRAS18371-3159 (LSE 63…
We present first results from a multi-object spectroscopy campaign in IC2602, the Hyades, the Pleiades, and the Coma cluster using VLT/FLAMES. We analysed the data for radial velocity, rotational velocity, and H-alpha activity. Here, we highlight three aspects of this study in the context of rotational braking and the rotation-activity relationship among low mass stars. Finally we discuss the cluster membership of sources in IC2602.
We report on a systematic search for X-ray emission from pre-main sequence and young main sequence stars in the Taurus-Auriga-Perseus region. Our stellar sample consists of all T Tauri stars from the Taurus-Auriga region, and all late-type stars from the Pleiades and Hyades clusters which have been observed by the ROSAT PSPC in pointed observations. We present the X-ray parameters for all observed stars in tables, and study the connection between coronal X-ray activity and stellar parameters for different subgroups of our sample. In particular we compile X-ray luminosity functions (XLF), and d…
We report on searches for radio emission from three of the nearest known young brown dwarfs using the Very Large Array. We have obtained sensitive upper limits on 3.6cm emission from 2MASSW J1207334-393254, TWA~5B and SSSPM J1102-3431, all of which are likely members of the $\sim$8-Myr-old TW Hydrae association. We derive constraints on the magnetic field strength and the number density of accelerated electrons, under the assumption that young brown dwarf atmospheres are able to produce gyrosynchrotron emission, as seems to be indicated in older brown dwarfs. For the young brown dwarf TWA~5B, …
We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of four G-K dwarfs, namely HD 166, epsilon Eri, chi1 Ori and kappa1 Cet. In three cases, we find a clear spatial association between photospheric and chromospheric active regions. For chi1 Ori we do not find appreciable variations of photospheric temperature, and chromospheric Halpha emission. We applied a spot/plage model to the observed rotational modulation of temperature and flux to derive spot/plage parameters and to reconstruct a rough three-dimensional map of the outer atmosphere of kappa1 Cet, HD 166 and epsilon Eri.
We present results of numerical modeling of the cyclic brightness modulation in the young binary systems with the eccentric orbits and low-mass secondary components. Brightness variations of the primary is due to the periodical extinction variations on the line-of-sight caused by the disk wind of the secondary and a common envelope it produces. A matter distribution in the envelope has been calculated in the ballistic approach. Calculations showed that for the young binaries with the elliptic orbits parameters of the photometric minima (their depth, duration and the shape of light curves) depe…
We report XMM-Newton observations of the young open cluster NGC 2547 which allow us to characterise coronal activity in solar-type stars at an age of 30 Myr. X-ray emission peaks among G-stars at luminosities (0.3-3keV) of Lx~10^{30.5} erg/s and declines to Lx<=10^{29.0} erg/s among M-stars. Coronal spectra show evidence for multi-temperature differential emission measures and low coronal metal abundances (Z~0.3). The G- and K-type stars follow the same relationship between X-ray activity and Rossby number established in older clusters and field stars, although most solar-type stars in NGC 254…
We present spectroscopic observations of two halo M subdwarfs which have H alpha emission lines. We show that in both cases close companions are the most likely cause of the chromospheric activity in these old, metal-poor stars. We argue that Gl 781 A's unseen companion is most likely a cool helium white dwarf. Gl 455 is a near-equal-mass M subdwarf (sdM) system. Gl 781 A is rapidly rotating with v sin i = 30 km/s. The properties of the chromospheres and X-ray coronae of these systems are compared to M dwarfs with emission (dMe). The X-ray hardness ratios and optical chromospheric lines emissi…
We present optical spectra of 45 intermediate mass Herbig Ae/Be stars. Together with the multi-epoch spectroscopic and photometric data compiled for a large sample of these stars and ages estimated for individual stars by using pre-main sequence evolutionary tracks, we have studied the evolution of emission line activity in them. We find that, on average, the H_alpha emission line strength decreases with increasing stellar age in HAeBe stars, indicating that the accretion activity gradually declines during the PMS phase. This would hint at a relatively long-lived (a few Myr) process being resp…
We present high-resolution optical spectra of 15 objects near or below the sub-stellar limit in the Upper Scorpius and $ρ$ Ophiuchus star-forming regions. These spectra, obtained with the HIRES instrument on the Keck I telescope, are used to investigate disk accretion, rotation and activity in young very low mass objects. We report the detection of a broad, asymmetric H$α$ emission line in the $ρ$ Oph source GY 5 which is also known to harbor mid-infrared excess, consistent with the presence of an accreting disk. The H$α$ profiles of the Upper Sco objects suggest little or no on-going accretio…
We analyze Keck Hires observations of rotation in F, G, and K dwarf members of the open cluster M34 (NGC 1039), which is 250 Myr old, and we compare them to the Pleiades, Hyades, and NGC 6475. The upper bound to rotation seen in M34 is about a factor of two lower than for the 100 Myr-old Pleiades, but most M34 stars are well below this upper bound, and it is the overall convergence in rotation rates that is most striking. A few K dwarfs in M34 are still rapid rotators, suggesting that they have undergone core-envelope decoupling, followed by replenishment of surface angular momentum from an in…
We present here high resolution echelle spectra taken during three observing runs of 14 single late-type stars identified in our previous studies (Montes et al. 2001b, hereafter Paper I) as possible members of different young stellar kinematic groups (Local Association (20 - 150 Myr), Ursa Major group (300 Myr), Hyades supercluster (600 Myr), and IC 2391 supercluster (35 Myr)). Radial velocities have been determined by cross correlation with radial velocity standard stars and used together with precise measurements of proper motions and parallaxes taken from Hipparcos and Tycho-2 Catalogues, t…
V,R,I continuum bands and Halpha + [NII] photometry for circumnuclear star forming regions (CNSFR) is presented, for galaxies with different kinds of nuclear activity: NGC 7469 (Sy 1), NGC 1068 (Sy 2), NGC 7177 (LINER) and NGC 3310 (Starburst). Their Halpha luminosities (0.02 - 7x10**40 erg/s; uncorrected for internal extinction), are comparable to those observed in other galaxies. No systematic differences in the broad band colours are found for the CNSFR in the different galaxies, except for those in NGC 3310 which are considerably bluer, partially due to a younger stellar population. Using …
In January 2003, the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) detected about 1400 young stars during a 13.2 day observation of the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC). This paper studies a well-defined sample of 28 solar-mass COUP sources to characterize the magnetic activity of analogs of the young Sun and thereby to improve understanding of the effects of solar X-rays on the solar nebula during the era of planet formation. We find that active young Suns spend 70% of their time in a characteristic state with relatively constant flux and magnetically confined plasma with temperatures kT_2 = 2.1 * kT_1. D…
We present the work in progress of a study based on photometric and spectroscopic observations of young Weak-line T Tauri and Post T Tauri stars just attiving on the Zero Age Main Sequence. This study is part of a project based on high-resolution spectra obtained with FOCES@CAHA (Spain) and SARG@TNG (Spain) and contemporaneous photometry performed at Catania (Italy) and Ege (Turkey) observatories. The main aim is to investigate the topology of magnetic active regions at photospheric and chromospheric levels in young single stars. Since our targets are slow rotators (vsini < 25 km/s), correspon…
Measured from high-resolution spectra, we present Ca II K line chromospheric fluxes in 35 G dwarf stars of 5 open clusters to determine the age-activity-rotation relationship from the young Hyades and Praesepe (0.6 Gyr) to the old M 67 (~ 4.5 Gyr) through the two intermediate age clusters IC 4651 and NGC 3680 (~ 1.7 Gyr). Our data show that a dramatic decrease in chromospheric activity takes place among solar stars between the Hyades and the IC4651 age, in about 1 Gyr. Afterwards, activity remains virtually constant for more than 3 Gyr. We briefly investigate the impact of this result on the a…
Aims. The aim of this paper is to characterise the star formation activity in the poorly studied embedded cluster Serpens/G3-G6, located ~ 45' (3 pc) to the south of the Serpens Cloud Core, and to determine the luminosity and mass functions of its population of Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). Methods. Multi-wavelength broadband photometry was obtained to sample the near and mid-IR spectral energy distributions to separate YSOs from field stars and classify the YSO evolutionary stage. ISOCAM mapping in the two filters LW2 (5-8.5 um) and LW3 (12-18 um) of a 19' x 16' field was combined with JHKs d…
[abridged] We describe the results of our multi-wavelength observing campaign on the young stellar objects in the LkH$α$101 cluster. Our simultaneous X-ray and multi-frequency radio observations are unique in providing simultaneous constraints on short-timescale variability at both wavelengths as well as constraints on the thermal or nonthermal nature of radio emission from young stars. Focussing in on radio-emitting objects and the multi-wavelength data obtained for them, we find that multi-frequency radio data indicate nonthermal emission even in objects with infrared evidence for disks. We …
High resolution echelle spectra of PW And (HD~1405) have been taken during eight observing runs from 1999 to 2002. The detailed analysis of the spectra allow us to determine its spectral type (K2V), mean heliocentric radial velocity (V_hel = -11.15 km/s) rotational velocity (vsin{i} = 22.6 km/s), and equivalent width of the lithium line 6707.8 AA (EW(LiI) = 273 mAA). The kinematic (Galactic Velocity (U, V, W)) confirms its membership of the Local Association moving group, in agreement with the age (30 to 80 Myrs) inferred from the color magnitude diagram and the lithium equivalent width. Photo…
9C J1503+4528 is a very young CSS radio galaxy, with an age of order 10^4 years. This source is therefore an ideal laboratory for the study ofthe intrinsic host galaxy/IGM properties, interactions between the radio source and surrounding ISM, links between star formation and AGN activity and the radio source triggering mechanism. Here we present the results of a spectroscopic analysis of this source, considering each of these aspects of radio source physics. We find that shock ionization by the young radio source is important in the central regions of the galaxy on scales similar to that of th…
We study the relation between age and magnetic activity in late-type pre-main sequence (PMS) stars, for the first time using mass-stratified subsamples. The effort is based on the Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project (COUP) which provides very sensitive and homogenous X-ray data on a uniquely large sample of 481 optically well-characterized low-extinction low-mass members of the Orion Nebula Cluster, for which individual stellar masses and ages could be determined. More than 98 percent of the stars in this sample are detected as X-ray sources. Within the PMS phase for stellar ages in the range $\si…
We present the ASCA results of intermediate-mass pre-main-sequence stars (PMSs), or Herbig Ae/Be stars (HAeBes). Among the 35 ASCA pointed-sources, we detect 11 plausible X-ray counterparts. X-ray luminosities of the detected sources in the 0.5-10 keV band are in the range of log LX ~30-32 ergs s-1, which is systematically higher than those of low-mass PMSs. This fact suggests that the contribution of a possible low-mass companion is not large. Most of the bright sources show significant time variation, particularly, two HAeBes - MWC 297 and TY CrA - exhibit flare-like events with long decay t…
We infer the star formation history in different regions of the blue compact dwarf NGC 1705 by comparing synthetic color-magnitude diagrams with HST optical and near-infrared photometry. We find that NGC 1705 is not a young galaxy because its star formation commenced at least 5 Gyr ago. On the other hand, we confirm the existence of a recent burst of star formation between 15 and 10 Myr ago. We also find evidence for new strong activity, which started 3 Myr ago and is still continuing. The old population is spread across the entire galaxy, while the young and intermediate stars are more concen…
(abridged) The Sun's magnetic activity has steadily declined during its main-sequence life. While the solar photospheric luminosity was about 30% lower 4.6 Gyr ago when the Sun arrived on the main sequence compared to present-day levels, its faster rotation generated enhanced magnetic activity; magnetic heating processes in the chromosphere, the transition region, and the corona induced ultraviolet, extreme-ultraviolet, and X-ray emission about 10, 100, and 1000 times, respectively, the present-day levels, as inferred from young solar-analog stars. Also, the production rate of accelerated, hig…
We present a study of rotation (vsini) and chromospheric activity (Halpha EW) based on an extensive set of high-resolution optical spectra obtained with MIKE on the 6.5m Magellan Clay telescope. Our targets are 74 F-M dwarfs in the young stellar associations Eta Cha, TW Hydrae, Beta Pic, and Tuc-Hor, spanning ages from 6 to 30 Myr. While the Halpha EW for most F and G stars are consistent with pure photospheric absorption, most K and M stars show chromospheric emission. By comparing Halpha EW in our sample to results in the literature, we see a clear evolutionary sequence: Chromospheric activi…
We report the discovery of a massive planetary companion orbiting the young disc star HD 81040. Based on five years of precise radial-velocity measurements with the HIRES and ELODIE spectrographs, we derive a spectroscopic orbit with a period $P =1001.0$ days and eccentricity $e = 0.53$. The inferred minimum mass for the companion of $m_2\sin i = 6.86$ M$_\mathrm{Jup}$ places it in the high-mass tail of the extrasolar planet mass distribution. The radial-velocity residuals exhibit a scatter significantly larger than the typical internal measurement precision of the instruments. Based on an ana…
We have measured the equivalent width (EW) of the K I 7699 A line in a sample of G and K-type members of the ~35 Myr old cluster IC 2602 for which a dispersion in Li EWs had been reported by previous studies. Active cluster stars with 0.75 < (B-V)o < 1 are characterized by a dispersion in the EW of the K I 7699 A, while earlier and later-type stars do not show any significant scatter. Cluster stars at all colors show potassium EW excesses with respect to field inactive stars; furthermore, a statistically significant relationship is found between differential potassium EWs and log Lx/Lbol ratio…
Galactic nuclei often harbor a disproportionately large amount of star formation activity with respect to their surrounding disks. Not coincidentally, the density of molecular material in galactic nuclei is often also much greater than that in disks (Table 1 in Kennicutt 1998). The interplay between rich populations of young stars and dense molecular environments is evident in our own Galactic center, which hosts over 10% of Galactic star formation activity within only $<$0.1% of the volume of the Galactic disk. Data obtained with the VLA and HST reveal a variety of star forming sites in the G…
We describe a new radial velocity survey of T Tauri stars and present the first results. Our search is motivated by an interest in detecting massive young planets, as well as investigating the origin of the brown dwarf desert. As part of this survey, we discovered large-amplitude, periodic, radial velocity variations in the spectrum of the weak line T Tauri star LkCa 19. Using line bisector analysis and a new simulation of the effect of star spots on the photometric and radial velocity variability of T Tauri stars, we show that our measured radial velocities for LkCa19 are fully consistent wit…
Star formation in the Local spiral arm in the direction of the Galactic longitudes 132--158 deg is reviewed. Recent star-forming activity in this Milky Way direction is evidenced by the presence here of the Cam OB1 association and dense dust and molecular clouds containing H$α$ emission stars, young irregular variables and infrared stellar objects. The clouds of the Local arm concentrate in two layers at 150-300 pc and at about 900 pc from the Sun. The Perseus arm objects in this direction are at a distance of about 2 kpc.
As part of our program to study stellar photospheric and chromospheric activity, we have examined several young solar type stars with activity levels intermediate between the Sun and the very active RS CVn binaries. We have analysed contemporaneous spectroscopic data obtained at Catania Observatory (Serra La Nave station, Mt. Etna) and photometric data acquired in the Stromgren bands with an automatic photometric telescope (APT) at Fairborn Observatory (Arizona, USA). Surface inhomogeneities have been detected from the rotational modulation of stellar brightness as well as from the modulation …
We have carried out an extensive search for X-ray emission from young, very low-mass objects near and beyond the substellar limit, making use of archived ROSAT PSPC and HRI observations pointed at Brown Dwarfs and Brown Dwarf candidates in the young sigma Orionis and Taurus-Auriga associations. In sigma Ori we identify three Brown Dwarf candidates with X-ray sources; in Taurus-Auriga we add one further X-ray detection of a Brown Dwarf to the list published earlier. We combine this data with all previously X-ray detected Brown Dwarfs and Brown Dwarf candidates in young stellar associations and …
Variability studies are an important tool to investigate key properties of stars and brown dwarfs. From photometric monitoring we are able to obtain information about rotation and magnetic activity, which are expected to change in the mass range below 0.3 solar masses, since these fully convective objects cannot host a solar-type dynamo. On the other hand, spectroscopic variability information can be used to obtain a detailed view on the accretion process in very young objects. In this paper, we report about our observational efforts to analyse the variability and rotational evolution of young…
We present high resolution spectroscopy of a sample of 24 solar-type stars in the young (15-40 Myr), open cluster, NGC 2547. We use our spectra to confirm cluster membership in 23 of these stars, determine projected equatorial velocities and chromospheric activity, and to search for the presence of accretion discs. We have found examples of both fast (vsini>50kms) and slow (vsini<10kms) rotators, but find no evidence for active accretion in any of the sample. The distribution of projected rotation velocities is indistinguishable from the slightly older IC 2391 and IC 2602 clusters, implying si…
We present deep imaging of the star-forming dwarf galaxy IC2574 in the M81 group taken with the Large Binocular Telescope in order to study in detail the recent star-formation history of this galaxy and to constrain the stellar feedback on its HI gas. We identify the star-forming areas in the galaxy by removing a smooth disk component from the optical images. We construct pixel-by-pixel maps of stellar age and stellar mass surface density in these regions by comparing their observed colors with simple stellar populations synthesized with STARBURST99. We find that an older burst occurred about …
The rotation-activity connection explains stellar activity in terms of rotation and convective overturn time. It is well established in stars of spectral types F--K and in M-type stars of young clusters. It is not established in field M-dwarfs, because they rotate very slowly, and detecting rotation periods or rotational line broadening is a challenge. In field M-dwarfs, saturation sets in below v_rot = 5 km/s, hence they are expected to populate the non-saturated part of the rotation-activity connection. This work for the first time shows intrinsically resolved spectral lines of slowly rotati…
We investigate the evolution of X-ray stellar activity from the age of the youngest known star forming regions (SFR), < 1Myr, to about 100 Myr, i.e. the zero age main sequence (ZAMS) for a ~ 1M_sun star. We consider five SFR of varying age (Rho Ophiuchi, the Orion Nebula Cluster, NGC 2264, Chamaeleon I, and Eta Chamaeleontis) and two young clusters (the Pleiades and NGC 2516). Optical and X-ray data for these regions are retrieved both from archival observations and recent literature, and reanalyzed here in a consistent manner so to minimize systematic differences in the results. We study tren…
We have compiled a catalog of late-type stars (F5-M) member of representative young disk stellar kinematic groups: the Local Association (Pleiades moving group, 20 - 150 Myr), Ursa Mayor group (Sirius supercluster, 300 Myr), and Hyades supercluster (600 Myr). Other moving groups as IC 2391 supercluster (35 Myr) and Castor Moving Group (200 Myr) have been also included. Stars have been selected from previously established member of stellar kinematic groups based in photometric and kinematic properties as well as from candidates based in other criteria as their level of chromospheric activity, r…
We discuss oxygen abundances derived from [O I] 6300 and the O I triplet in stars spanning a wide range in chromospheric activity level, and show that these two indicators yield increasingly discrepant results with higher chromospheric/coronal activity measures. While the forbidden and permitted lines give fairly consistent results for solar-type disk dwarfs, spuriously high O I triplet abundances are observed in young Hyades and Pleiades stars, as well as in individual components of RS CVn binaries (up to 1.8 dex). The distinct behaviour of the [O I]-based abundances which consistently remain…
