Raman spectroscopic investigations are carried out on one-dimensional nanostructures of InN,such as nanowires and nanobelts synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. In addition to the optical phonons allowed by symmetry; A1, E1 and E2(high) modes, two additional Raman peaks are observed around 528 cm-1 and 560 cm-1 for these nanostructures. Calculations for the frequencies of surface optical (SO) phonon modes in InN nanostructures yield values close to those of the new Raman modes. A possible reason for large intensities for SO modes in these nanostructures is also discussed.
We report a Raman scattering investigation of columnar BiFeO3-CoFe2O4 (BFO-CFO) epitaxial thin film nanostructures, where BFO pillars are embedded in a CFO matrix. The feasibility of a strain analysis is illustrated through an investigation of two nanostructures with different BFO-CFO ratios. We show that the CFO matrix presents the same strain state in both nanostructures, while the strain state of the BFO pillars depends on the BFO/CFO ratio with an increasing tensile strain along the out-of-plane direction with decreasing BFO content. Our results demonstrate that Raman scattering allows mon…
We explored the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity of the InN nanostructures, possessing surface electron accumulation (SEA), using the Rhodamine 6G (R6G) molecules. SERS enhancement is observed for the InN nanostructures which possess surface electron accumulation (SEA). In case of high temperature grown InN samples, a peak is observed in the low wave number (THz region) of Raman spectra of InN nanostructures originating from excitation of the two dimensional (2D) plasmons of the SEA. The enhancement factor of four orders was calculated with the assumption of monolayer coverage…
The experimental limitations in the signal enhancement and spatial resolution in spectroscopic imaging have been always a challenging task in the application of near-field spectroscopy for nanostructured materials in the sub-diffraction limit. In addition, the scattering efficiency also plays an important role in improving signal enhancement and contrast of the spectroscopic imaging of nanostructures by scattering of light. We report the effect of scattering efficiency in the Raman intensity enhancement, and contrast generation in near-field tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (TERS) imaging of o…
Spectroscopic analysis of large biomolecules is critical in a number of applications, including medical diagnostics and label-free biosensing. Recently, it has been shown that Raman spectroscopy of proteins can be used to diagnose some diseases, including a few types of cancer. These experiments have however been performed using traditional Raman spectroscopy and the development of the Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) assays suitable for large biomolecules could lead to a substantial decrease in the amount of specimen necessary for these experiments. We present a new method to achiev…
We report the growth of Si nanostructures, either as thin films or nanoparticles, on graphene substrates. The Si nanostructures are shown to be single crystalline, air stable and oxidation resistive, as indicated by the observation of a single crystalline Si Raman mode at around 520 cm-1, a STM image of an ordered surface structure under ambient condition, and a Schottky junction with graphite. Ultra-thin silicon regions exhibit silicene-like behavior, including a Raman mode at around 550 cm-1, a triangular lattice structure in STM that has distinctly different lattice spacing from that of eit…
The vibrational spectroscopy of semiconductor nanostructures can provide important information on their structure. In this work, experimental Raman and infrared spectra are compared with vibrational spectra of CdSe/CdS core/shell nanoplatelets calculated from first principles using the density functional theory. The calculations confirm the two-mode behavior of phonon spectra of nanostructures. An analysis of the experimental spectra reveals the absence of modes with a high amplitude of vibrations of surface atoms, which indicates their strong damping. Taking into account the difference in the…
An optical characterization tool of Raman spectroscopy with extremely weak scattering cross section tool is not popular to analyze scattered signal from a single nanostructure in the sub-diffraction regime. In this regard, plasmonic assisted characterization tools are only relevant in spectroscopic studies of nanoscale object in the sub-diffraction limit. We have reported polarized resonance Raman spectroscopic (RRS) studies with strong electron-phonon coupling to understand the crystalline orientation of a single AlGaN nanowire of diameter about 100 nm. AlGaN nanowire is grown by chemical vap…
In this paper we report phonon dynamics in chemically synthesized Zn1- xMgxO (0\leqx\leq0.07) and Zn1-yCdyO (0\leqy\leq0.03) alloy nanostructures of sizes ~10 nm using non-resonant Raman and Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Substitution by Mg makes the unit cell compact while Cd substitution leads to unit cell expansion. On alloying, both A1(LO) and E1(LO) mode of wurtzite ZnO show blue shift for Zn1-xMgxO and red shift for Zn1-yCdyO alloy nanostructures due to mass defect and volume change induced by the impurity atoms. Significant shift has been observed in E1(LO) mode for Z…
Recently, heavily doped semiconductors are emerging as an alternate for low loss plasmonic materials. InN, belonging to the group III nitrides, possesses the unique property of surface electron accumulation (SEA) which provides two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) system. In this report, we demonstrated the surface plasmon properties of InN nanoparticles originating from SEA using the real space mapping of the surface plasmon fields for the first time. The SEA is confirmed by Raman studies which are further corroborated by photoluminescence and photoemission spectroscopic studies. The frequency…
Crystalline Silicon-on-Sapphire (SOS) films were implanted with boron (B$^+$) and phosphorous (P$^+$) ions. Different samples, prepared by varying the ion dose in the range $10^{14}$ to 5 x $10^{15}$ and ion energy in the range 150-350 keV, were investigated by the Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and glancing angle x-ray diffraction (GAXRD). The Raman results from dose dependent B$^+$ implanted samples show red-shifted and asymmetrically broadened Raman line-shape for B$^+$ dose greater than $10^{14}$ ions cm$^{-2}$. The asymmetry and red shift in the Raman line-shape i…

From these devices surface enhanced (resonance) Raman [SE(R)R] signals of molecules exclusively attached to Pt are obtained with intensities up to 50% of the value determined for Ag. SE(R)R spectroscopic investigations are carried out with different probe molecules, silica coating thicknesses and excitation lines. Additionally, field enhancement calculations on Ag-SiO2-Pt support geometries are performed to elucidate the influence of the Pt island film nanostructure on the observed…
DNA origami is a novel self-assembly technique allowing one to form various 2D shapes and position matter with nanometer accuracy. It has been used to coordinate placement of nanoscale objects, both organic and inorganic; to make molecular motors and walkers; and to create optically active nanostructures. Here we use DNA origami templates to engineer Surfaced Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) substrates. Specifically, gold nanoparticles were selectively attached to the corners of rectangular origami and subsequently enlarged via solution-based metal deposition. The resulting assemblies were des…
Raman forbidden modes and surface defect related Raman features in SnO_2 nanostructures carry information about disorder and surface defects which strongly influence important technological applications like catalysis and sensing. Due to the weak intensities of these peaks, it is difficult to identify these features by using conventional Raman spectroscopy. Tip enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) studies conducted on SnO_2 nanoparticles (NPs) of size 4 and 25 nm have offered significant insights of prevalent defects and disorders. Along with one order enhancement in symmetry allowed Raman modes…
High quality InN nanoparticles are grown using atmospheric chemical vapour deposition technique via a self-seeded catalytic approach in the temperature range of 580 to 650 oC. In this temperature region, nucleation barrier of InN is overcome by seeding the low density In nano-particles prior to the introduction of reactive ammonia. Samples having increasing carrier density are grown with the help of increasing growth temperature to understand its role in optical phonon structure. Near resonance Raman spectra show complete different phonon pictures as compared to those for the off-resonance spe…
Graphdiyne, atomically-thin 2D carbon nanostructure based on sp-sp2 hybridization, is an appealing system potentially showing outstanding mechanical and optoelectronic properties. Surface-catalyzed coupling of halogenated sp-carbon-based molecular precursors represents a promising bottom-up strategy to fabricate extended 2D carbon systems with engineered structure on metallic substrates. Here, we investigate the atomic-scale structure and electronic and vibrational properties of an extended graphdiyne-like sp-sp2 carbon nanonetwork grown on Au(111) by means of on-surface synthesis. The formati…
Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effects on tin dioxide in the form of bulk material, nanostructured thin films and colloidal solutions were investigated. Raman spectra are characterized by the three Raman scattering peaks at 478, 633, and 776 \invcm, assigned to the E$_g$, A$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ modes, typical of rutile SnO$_2$. In presence of the silver nanoparticles, in addition to the enhancement intensity of some of the fundamental tin dioxide rutile Raman features, the appearance of a new Raman scattering peak at about 600 cm$^{-1}$ is observed. This spectral features is observed,…
Growth evolution of InN nanostructures via a chemical vapor deposition technique is reported using In_2O_3 as precursor material and NH_3 as reactive gas in the temperature range of 550-700 ^oC. Morphology of the nanostructures solely depends on the growth temperature, evolving from quantum dot sized nanoparticles to nanorods. It is found that 630 ^oC is the threshold temperature for nanorod growth. At 630 ^oC, nucleation starts with multifaceted particle having {10-12} surface planes. Subsequently, hexagonal polyhedral NRs are grown along the [0001] direction with non-polar surfaces of m-plan…
Nanofibers functionalized by metal nanostructures and particles are exploited as effective flexible substrates for SERS analysis. Their complex three-dimensional structure may provide Raman signals enhanced by orders of magnitude compared to untextured surfaces. Understanding the origin of such improved performances is therefore very important for pushing nanofiber-based analytical technologies to their upper limit. Here we report on polymer nanofiber mats which can be exploited as substrates for enhancing the Raman spectra of adsorbed probe molecules. The increased surface area and the scatte…
Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) has the capacity of detecting trace amount of biological or chemical matter, even single molecules, through the use of metallic nanostructures such as nanorods. Silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanorods have led to the impressive enhancement of Raman signals, but they are either expensive, degrade fast over time, or suffer from poor sample repeatability. In contrast, Al is much less expensive, and Al nanorods could potentially be resistant to degradation over time due to the protection from native aluminum-oxide layers. Unfortunately, the controllable growth…
Molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) is a promising material for making two-dimensional crystals and flexible electronic and optoelectronic devices at the nanoscale. MoS$_2$ flakes can show high mobilities and have even been integrated in nanocircuits . A fundamental requirement for such use is efficient thermal transport. Electronic transport generates heat which needs to be evacuated, more crucially so in nanostructures. Anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering is the dominant intrinsic limitation to thermal transport in insulators. Here, using appropriate samples, ultra-low energy Raman spectroscopy a…
Vanadium is a transition metal with multiple oxidation states and V2O5 is the most stable form among them. Besides catalysis, chemical sensing and photo-chromatic applications, V2O5 is also reported to exhibit a semiconductor to metal transition (SMT) at a temperature range of 530-560K. Even though, there are debates in using the term 'SMT' for V2O5, the metallic behavior above transition temperature and its origin are of great interests in the scientific community. In this study, V2O5 nanostructures were deposited on SiO2/Si substrate by vapour transport method using Au as catalyst. Temperatu…
We report a detailed study of the strong near-field Raman scattering enhancement which takes place in tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) in indium nitride. In addition to the well-known first-order optical phonons of indium nitride, near-field Raman modes, not detectable in the far-field, appear when approaching the plasmonic probe. The frequencies of these modes coincide with calculated energies of second order combinational modes consisting of optical zone center phonons and acoustic phonons at the edge of the Brillouin zone. The appearance of strong combinational modes suggests that TERS …
We have investigated antidot lattices, which were prepared on exfoliated graphene single layers via electron-beam lithography and ion etching, by means of scanning Raman spectroscopy. The peak positions, peak widths and intensities of the characteristic phonon modes of the carbon lattice have been studied systematically in a series of samples. In the patterned samples, we found a systematic stiffening of the G band mode, accompanied by a line narrowing, while the 2D mode energies are found to be linearly correlated with the G mode energies. We interpret this as evidence for p-type doping of th…
Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) exploits surface plasmons induced by the incident field in metallic nanostructures to significantly increase the Raman intensity. Graphene provides the ideal prototype two dimensional (2d) test material to investigate SERS. Its Raman spectrum is well known, graphene samples are entirely reproducible, height controllable down to the atomic scale, and can be made virtually defect-free. We report SERS from graphene, by depositing arrays of Au particles of well defined dimensions on graphene/SiO$_2$(300nm)/Si. We detect significant enhancements at 633nm. To…
The programmable assembly of DNA strands is a promising tool for building tailored bottom-up nanostructures. Here, we present a plasmonic nanosystem obtained by the base-pairing mediated aggregation of gold nanoparticles (NPs) which are separately functionalized with two different single-stranded DNA chains. Their controlled assembly is mediated by a complementary DNA "bridge" sequence. We monitor the formation of DNA assembled NP aggregates in solution, and we study their Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) response by comparison with the single NP constituents. We interpret the revealed…
For the first time, high optical quality InN films were grown on sapphire substrate using atmospheric chemical vapour deposition technique in the temperature range of 560-650 oC. Self-catalytic approach was adopted to overcome the nucleation barrier for depositing InN films. In this process, seeding of the nucleation sites and subsequent growth was performed in the presence of reactive NH3. We investigated the simultaneous effect of strain and Burstein-Moss (BM) energy shift on optical properties of InN films using Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Existence of compressive strain in al…
Group III nitride based two-dimensional multi-quantum well (MQW) nanostructures find remarkable applications in the visible to ultraviolet light sources. The near-field studies using TERS probe with an Au spherical nanoparticle of ~ 200 nm diameter were carried out at ambient conditions showing approximately two to three orders of enhancement in the Raman intensities. A series of MnxZn1-xO (x=0.03, 0.05) nanostructures have been grown via the solution based chemical spray pyrolysis technique. Electron beam induced modifications on structural, linear and nonlinear optical and surface morphological properties have been studied and elaborated. GXRD (glancing angle X-ray diffraction) patterns show sharp diffraction peaks matching with the hexagonal wurtzite structure of ZnO thin films. The upsurge in ebeam dosage resulted in the shifting of XRD peaks (101) and (002) towards lower angle side, and increase in FWHM value. Gaussian deconvolution on PL spectra revea…
Surface plasmon resonance of metal nanostructures has broad application prospects in the fields of photocatalysis, optical sensing, biomarkers and surface-enhanced Raman scattering. This paper reports a graphene-assisted method for preparing large-scale single crystal Ag(111) nanoparticle arrays based on ion implantation technique. By surface periodic treatment and annealing of the implanted sample, regularly arranged Ag nanoparticles can be prepared on the sample surface. A new application for graphene is proposed, that is, as a perfect barrier layer to prevent metal atoms from evaporating or…
The dominant phonon wavevectors $q^{*}$ probed by the 2D Raman mode of graphene are highly anisotropic and rotate with the orientation of the polarizer:analyzer direction relative to the lattice. The corresponding electronic transitions connect the electronic equibandgap contours where the product of the ingoing and outgoing optical matrix elements is strongest, showing a finite component along $\bm{K}-\bmΓ$ that sensitively determines $q^{*}$. We revoke the notion of 'inner' and 'outer' processes. Our findings explain the splitting of the 2D mode of graphene under uniaxial tensile strain. The…
We present measurements of the $D''$ Raman mode in graphene and carbon nanotubes at different laser excitation energies. The Raman mode around 1050 - 1150\,cm$^{-1}$ originates from a double-resonant scattering process of longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonons with defects. We investigate its dependence on laser excitation energy, on the number of graphene layers and on the carbon nanotube diameter. We assign this Raman mode to so-called 'inner' processes with resonant phonons mainly from the $Γ-K$ high-symmetry direction. The asymmetry of the $D''$ mode is explained by additional contributions fr…
Mixtures containing different weight ratios of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNT) were prepared and studied by in-situ Raman spectroelectrochemistry. Two components of the G-prime mode in the Raman spectra, which can be resolved at high electrode potentials, were assigned to the signals from inner tubes of DWCNT and outer tubes of DWCNT together with SWCNT. The dependence of the ratios of these two components of the G-prime mode on the nominal amount of SWCNT and DWCNT in the samples was simulated so that the residual amount of SWCNT in the original D…
