We consider spin-boson models composed by a single bosonic mode and an ensemble of $N$ identical two-level atoms. The situation where the coupling between the bosonic mode and the atoms generates real and virtual processes is studied, where the whole system is in thermal equilibrium with a reservoir at temperature $β^{-1}$. Phase transitions from ordinary fluorescence to superradiant phase in three different models is investigated. First a model where the coupling between the bosonic mode and the $j-th$ atom is via the pseudo-spin operator $σ^{,z}_{(j)}$ is studied. Second, we investigate the generalized Dicke model, introducing different coupling constants between the single mode bosonic field and the environment, $g_{1}$ and $g_{2}$ for rotating and counter-rotating terms, respectively. Finally it is considered a modified version of the generalized Dicke model with intensity-dependent coupling in the rotating terms. In the first model the zero mode contributes to render the canonical entropy a negative quantity for low temperatures. The last two models presents phase transitions, even when only Hamiltonian terms which generates virtual processes are considered.
Single photon superradiance is a strong enhancement of spontaneous emission appearing when a single excitation is shared between a large number of two-level systems. This enhanced rate can be accompanied by a shift of the emission frequency, the cooperative Lamb shift, issued from the exchange of virtual photons between the emitters. In this work we present a semiconductor optoelectronic device allowing the observation of these two phenomena at room temperature. We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that plasma oscillations in spatially separated quantum wells interact through real a…
For the multi-mode Dicke model in a transport setting that exhibits collective boson transmissions, we construct the equation of motion for the cumulant generating function. Approximating the exact system of equations at the level of cumulant generating function and system operators at lowest order, allows us to recover master equation results of the Full Counting Statistics for certain parameter regimes at very low cost of computation. The thermodynamic limit, that is not accessible with the master equation approach, can be derived analytically for different approximations.
We consider the entanglement properties of the quantum phase transition in the single-mode superradiance model, involving the interaction of a boson mode and an ensemble of atoms. For infinite system size, the atom-field entanglement of formation diverges logarithmically with the correlation length exponent. Using a continuous variable representation, we compare this to the divergence of the entropy in conformal field theories, and derive an exact expression for the scaled concurrence and the cusp-like non-analyticity of the momentum squeezing.

Sonoluminescence is a process in which a strong sound field is used to produce light in liquids. We explain sonoluminescence as a phase transition from ordinary fluorescence to a superradiant phase. We consider a spin-boson model composed of a single bosonic mode and an ensemble of $N$ identical two-level atoms. We assume that the whole system is in thermal equilibrium with a reservoir at temperature $β^{-1}$. We show that, in a ultrastrong-coupling regime, between the two-level atoms and the electromagnetic field it is possible to have a cooperative interaction of the molecules of the gas in …
We study a highly efficient, matter-wave amplification mechanism in a longitudinally-excited, Bose-Einstein condensate and reveal a very large enhancement due to nonlinear gain from a sixmatter- optical, wave-mixing process involving four photons. Under suitable conditions this opticallydegenerate, four-photon process can be stronger than the usual two-photon inelastic light scattering mechanism, leading to nonlinear growth of the observed matter-wave scattering independent of any enhancement from bosonic stimulation. Our theoretical framework can be extended to encompass even higher-order, no…
We derive analytical results for various quantities related to the excited-state quantum phase transitions in a class of Dicke superradiance models in the semiclassical limit. Based on a calculation of a partition sum restricted to Dicke states, we discuss the singular behavior of the derivative of the density of states and find observables like the mean (atomic) inversion and the boson (photon) number and its fluctuations at arbitrary energies. Criticality depends on energy and a parameter that quantifies the relative weight of rotating versus counter-rotating terms, and we find a close analo…
We theoretically analyze superradiant emission of light from an ultracold gas of bosonic atoms confined in a bad cavity. A metastable dipolar transition of the atoms couples to the cavity field and is incoherently pumped, the mechanical effects of cavity-atom interactions tend to order the atoms in the periodic cavity potential. By means of a mean-field model we determine the conditions on the cavity parameters and pump rate that lead to the buildup of a stable macroscopic dipole emitting coherent light. We show that this occurs when the superradiant decay rate and the pump rate exceed thresho…
We consider an ensemble of ultracold bosonic atoms within a near-planar cavity, driven by a far detuned laser whose phase is modulated at a frequency comparable to the transverse cavity mode spacing. We show that a strong, dispersive atom-photon coupling can be reached for many transverse cavity modes at once. The resulting Floquet polaritons involve a superposition of a set of cavity modes with a density excitation of the atomic cloud. The mutual interactions between these modes lead to distinct avoided crossings between the polaritons. Increasing the laser drive intensity, a low-lying multim…

We investigate the entanglement properties of an ensemble of atoms interacting with a single bosonic field mode via the Dicke (superradiance) Hamiltonian. The model exhibits a quantum phase transition and a well-understood thermodynamic limit, allowing the identification of both quantum and semi-classical many-body features in the behaviour of the entanglement. We consider the entanglement between the atoms and the field, an investigation initiated in [N. Lambert, C. Emary and T. Brandes, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 92}, %073602 (2004)]. In the thermodynamic limit, we give exact results for all enta…
We study the superradiant evolution of a set of $N$ two-level systems spontaneously radiating under the effect of phase-breaking mechanisms. We investigate the dynamics generated by non-radiative losses and pure dephasing, and their interplay with spontaneous emission. Our results show that in the parameter region relevant to many solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics experiments, even with a dephasing rate much faster than the radiative lifetime of a single two-level system, a sub-optimal collective superfluorescent burst is still observable. We also apply our theory to the dilute excita…
Here we show how, in the ultra-strongly-coupled spin-boson model, apparently unphysical "Matsubara modes" are required not only to regulate detailed balance, but also to arrive at a correct and physical description of the non-perturbative dynamics and steady-state. In particular, in the zero-temperature limit, we show that neglecting the Matsubara modes results in an erroneous emission of virtual photons from the collective ground state. To explore this difficult-to-model regime we start by using a non-perturbative hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) approach, based on a partial fitting of…
We study a simple model describing superradiance in a system of two-level atoms interacting with a single-mode bosonic field. The model permits a continuous crossover between integrable and partially chaotic regimes and shows a complex thermodynamic and quantum phase structure. Several types of excited-state quantum phase transitions separate quantum phases that are characterized by specific energy dependences of various observables and by different atom-field and atom-atom entanglement properties. We observe an approximate revival of some states from the weak atom-field coupling limit in the …
We investigate the nonlinear light-matter interaction of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in an external periodic potential inside an optical cavity which is weakly coupled to vacuum radiation modes and driven by a transverse pump field. Based on a generalized Bose-Hubbard model which incorporates a single cavity mode, we include the collective backaction of the atoms on the cavity light field and determine the nonequilibrium quantum phases within the nonperturbative bosonic dynamical mean-field theory. With the system parameters adapted to recent experiments, we find a quantum phase transiti…
The transversely confined propagating modes of an optical fiber mediate virtually infinite range energy exchanges among atoms placed within their field, which adds to the inherent free space dipole-dipole coupling. Typically, the single atom free space decay rate largely surpasses the emission rate into the guided fiber modes. However, scaling up the atom number as well as the system size amounts to entering a collective emission regime, where fiber-induced superradiant spontaneous emission dominates over free space decay. We numerically study this super- and subradiant decay of highly excited…

We investigate the generalization of the spin-boson model to arbitrary spin size. The Born-Markov approximation is employed to derive a master equation in the regime of small coupling strengths to the environment. For spin one half, the master equation transforms into a set of Bloch equations, the solution of which is in good agreement with results of the spin-boson model for weak ohmic dissipation. For larger spins, we find a superradiance-like behavior known from the Dicke model. The influence of the nonresonant bosons of the dissipative environment can lead to the formation of a beat patter…
