Using theoretical arguments, we prove the numerically well-known fact that the eigenvalues of all localized stationary solutions of the cubic-quintic 2D+1 nonlinear Schrodinger equation exhibit an upper cut-off value. The existence of the cut-off is inferred using Gagliardo-Nirenberg and Holder inequalities together with Pohozaev identities. We also show that, in the limit of eigenvalues close to zero, the eigenstates of the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation behave similarly to those of the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation.
Using a variational approximation we study discrete solitons of a nonlinear Schroedinger lattice with a cubic-quintic nonlinearity. Using an ansatz with six parameters we are able to approximate bifurcations of asymmetric solutions connecting site-centered and bond-centered solutions and resulting in the exchange of their stability. We show that the numerically exact and variational approximations are quite close for solitons of small powers.
We highlight an interesting mapping between the moving breather solutions of the generalized Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations and the static solutions of neutral scalar field theories. Using this connection, we then obtain several new moving breather solutions of the cubic-quintic NLS equation both with and without uniform phase in space. The stability of some stationary solutions is investigated numerically and the results confirmed via dynamical evolution.
We demonstrate the occurrence of anomalous diffusion of dissipative solitons in a `simple' and deterministic prototype model: the cubic-quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation in two spatial dimensions. The main features of their dynamics, induced by symmetric-asymmetric explosions, can be modeled by a subdiffusive continuous-time random walk, while in the case dominated by only asymmetric explosions it becomes characterized by normal diffusion.
We describe similariton pulse propagation in double-doped optical fibers with the aid of self-similarity analysis of the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with varying dispersion, nonlinearity, gain or absorption, and nonlinear gain. Exact similariton pulses that can propagate self similarly subject to simple scaling rules of this model have been found using a fractional transform. By appropriately tailoring the dispersion profile and nonlinearity, the condition for optimal pulse compression has been obtained. Also, nonlinear chirping of the trigonometric solution has been demonstra…
We investigate the impact of higher-order nonlinear and dispersive effects on the onset of soliton explosions in the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation. We show how the interplay of the high order effects (HOEs) results in the splitting of symmetric explosion modes and to the formation of right- or left-side periodic explosions. In addition, we demonstrate that HOEs induce a series of pulsating instabilities, leading to a significant reduction of the stability region of the single soliton solution.
In this paper we use a traveling wave reduction or a so-called spatial approximation to comprehensively investigate the periodic solutions of the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation. The primary tools used here are Hopf bifurcation theory and perturbation theory. Explicit results are obtained for the post-bifurcation periodic orbits and their stability. Generalized and degenerate Hopf bifurcations are also briefly considered to track the emergence of global structure such as homoclinic orbits.
We investigate mobility regimes for localized modes in the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with the cubic-quintic onsite terms. Using the variational approximation (VA), the largest soliton's total power admitting progressive motion of kicked discrete solitons is predicted, by comparing the effective kinetic energy with the respective Peierls-Nabarro (PN) potential barrier. The prediction is novel for the DNLS model with the cubic-only nonlinearity too, demonstrating a reasonable agreement with numerical findings. Small self-focusing quintic term quickly suppresses the mobility.…
The transmission properties through a saturable cubic-quintic nonlinear defect attached to lateral linear chains is investigated. Particular attention is directed to the possible non-reciprocal diode-like transmission when the parity-symmetry of the defect is broken. Distinct cases of parity breaking are considered including asymmetric linear and nonlinear responses. The spectrum of the transmission coefficient is analytically computed and the influence of the degree of saturation analyzed in detail. The transmission of Gaussian wave-packets is also numerically investigated. Our results unveil…
One dimensional lattice with an on-site cubic-quintic nonlinear response described by a cubic-quintic discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation is tested for asymmetric wave propagation. The lattice is connected to linear side chains. Asymmetry is introduced by breaking the mirror symmetry of the lattice with respect to the center of the nonlinear region. Three cases corresponding to dimer, trimer and quadrimer are discussed with focus on the corresponding diode-like effect. Transmission coefficients are analytically calculated for left and right moving waves via backward transfer map. The diffe…
Numerical simulations of the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation (CCQGLE), a canonical equation governing the weakly nonlinear behavior of dissipative systems in a wide variety of disciplines, reveal five entirely novel classes of pulse or solitary waves solutions, viz. pulsating, creeping, snaking, erupting, and chaotical solitons. Here, we develop a theoretical framework for analyzing the full spatio-temporal structure of one class of dissipative solution (snaking soliton) of the CCQGLE using the variational approximation technique and the dynamical systems theory. The qualitative…
We characterize the full family of soliton solutions sitting over a background plane wave and ruled by the cubic-quintic nonlinear Schroedinger equation in the regime where a quintic focusing term represents a saturation of the cubic defocusing nonlinearity. We discuss existence and properties of solitons in terms of catastrophe theory and fully characterize bistability and instabilities of the dark-antidark pairs, revealing new mechanisms of decay of antidark solitons.
We study the dynamics of femtosecond light pulse propagation in a cubic-quintic medium exhibiting dispersive effect up to the fourth order as well as self-frequency shift and self-steepening nonlinearity. A rich variety of periodic and solitary wave solutions are derived for the governing generalized higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the presence of self-frequency shift and self-steepening effects. It is found that the frequency shift, inverse velocity, amplitude and wave number of both periodic and solitary waves depend on dispersion coefficients and nonlinearity parameters as we…
We study the propagation of one-dimentional optical beams in a weakly nonlocal medium exhibiting cubic-quintic nonlinearity. A nonlinear equation governing the evolution of the beam intensity in the nonlocal medium is derived thereby which allows us to examine whether the traveling-waves exist in such optical material. An efficient transformation is applied to obtain explicit solutions of the envelope model equation in the presence of all material parameters. We find that a variety of periodic waves accompanied with a nonlinear chirp do exist in the system in the presence of the weak nonlocali…
Axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric patterns in the cubic-quintic Swift-Hohenberg equation posed on a disk with Neumann boundary conditions are studied via numerical continuation and bifurcation analysis. Axisymmetric localized solutions in the form of spots and rings known from earlier studies persist and snake in the usual fashion until they begin to interact with the boundary. Depending on parameters, including the disk radius, these states may or may not connect to the branch of domain-filling target states. Secondary instabilities of localized axisymmetric states may create multi-arm localiz…
In this paper, an exact explicit solution for the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation is obtained, by using Lambert W function or omega function. More pertinently, we term them as Lambert W-kink-type solitons, begotten under the influence of intrapulse Raman scattering. Parameter domains are delineated in which these optical solitons exit in the ensuing model. We report the effect of model coefficients on the amplitude of Lambert W-kink solitons, which enables us to control efficiently the pulse intensity and hence their subsequent evolution. Also, moving fronts or optical shock-typ…
Competing nonlinearities, such as the cubic (Kerr) and quintic nonlinear terms whose strengths are of opposite signs (the coefficients in front of the nonlinearities), exist in various physical media (in particular, in optical and matter-wave media). A benign competition between self-focusing cubic and self-defocusing quintic nonlinear nonlinearities (known as cubic-quintic model) plays an important role in creating and stabilizing the self-trapping of D-dimensional localized structures, in the contexts of standard nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We incorporate an external periodic potential (…
We derive an extended cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with Hamiltonian structure in a nonlinear Klein-Gordon model with cubic-quintic nonlinearity. We use the nonlinear dispersion relation to properly take into account the input of high-order nonlinear effects in the Hamiltonian perturbation approach to nonlinear modulation. We demonstrate that changing the balance between the cubic and quintic nonlinearities has a significant effect on the stability of unmodulated wave packets to long-wave modulations.
We revisit the topic of the existence and azimuthal modulational stability of solitary vortices (alias vortex solitons) in the two-dimensional (2D) cubic-quintic nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation. We develop a semi-analytical approach, assuming that the vortex soliton is relatively narrow, and thus splitting the full 2D equation into radial and azimuthal 1D equations. A variational approach is used to predict the radial shape of the vortex soliton, using the radial equation, yielding results very close to those obtained from numerical solutions. Previously known existence bounds for the solitar…
The statics and dynamics of a stable, mobile three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal vortex light bullet in a cubic-quintic nonlinear medium with a focusing cubic nonlinearity above a critical value and any defocusing quintic nonlinearity is considered. The present study is based on an analytic variational approximation and a full numerical solution of the 3D nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The 3D vortex bullet can propagate with a constant velocity. Stability of the vortex bullet is established numerically and variationally. The collision between two vortex bullets moving along the angular mome…

Computational modeling of pattern formation in nonequilibrium systems is a fundamental tool for studying complex phenomena in biology, chemistry, materials science and engineering. The pursuit for theoretical descriptions of some among those physical problems led to the Swift-Hohenberg equation (SH3) which describes pattern selection in the vicinity of instabilities. A finite differences scheme, known as Stabilizing Correction (Christov & Pontes; 2001 DOI: 10.1016/S0895-7177(01)00151-0), developed to integrate the cubic Swift-Hohenberg equation in two dimensions, is reviewed and extended in th…
Conditions for stable propagation of one-dimensional bright spatial solitons in media exhibiting optical nonlinearities up to the seventh-order are investigated. The results show well-defined stability regions even when all the nonlinear terms are focusing. Conditions for onset of the supercritical collapse of the optical beam are identified too. A variational approximation is used to predict dependence of the soliton propagation constant on the norm, and respective stability regions are identified using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. Analytical results obtained by means of the variational …
In evolution equations for a complex amplitude, the phase obeys a much more intricate equation than the amplitude. Nevertheless, general methods should be applicable to both variables. On the example of the traveling wave reduction of the complex cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGL5), we explain how to overcome the difficulties arising in two such methods: (i) the criterium that the sum of residues of an elliptic solution should be zero, (ii) the construction of a first order differential equation admitting the given equation as a differential consequence (subequation method).
Approximate analytical chirped solitary pulse (chirped dissipative soliton) solutions of the one-dimensional complex cubic-quintic nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equation are obtained. These solutions are stable and highly-accurate under condition of domination of a normal dispersion over a spectral dissipation. The parametric space of the solitons is three-dimensional, that makes theirs to be easily traceable within a whole range of the equation parameters. Scaling properties of the chirped dissipative solitons are highly interesting for applications in the field of high-energy ultrafast laser phy…
The nonlinear lattice---a new and nonlinear class of periodic potentials---was recently introduced to generate various nonlinear localized modes. Several attempts failed to stabilize two-dimensional (2D) solitons against their intrinsic critical collapse in Kerr media. Here, we provide a possibility for supporting 2D matter-wave solitons and vortices in an extended setting---the cubic and quintic model---by introducing another nonlinear lattice whose period is controllable and can be different from its cubic counterpart, to its quintic nonlinearity, therefore making a fully `nonlinear quasi-cr…
Singularity Theory is used to comprehensively investigate the bifurcations of the steady-states of the traveling wave ODEs of the cubic-quintic Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE). These correspond to plane waves of the PDE. In addition to the most general situation, we also derive the degeneracy conditions on the eight coefficients of the CGLE under which the equation for the steady states assumes each of the possible quartic (the quartic fold and an unnamed form), cubic (the pitchfork and the winged cusp), and quadratic (four possible cases) normal forms for singularities of codimension up to th…
We study the formation and propagation of chirped elliptic and solitary waves in cubic-quintic nonlinear Helmholtz (CQNLH) equation. This system describes nonparaxial pulse propagation in a planar waveguide with Kerr-like and quintic nonlinearities along with spatial dispersion originating from the nonparaxial effect that becomes dominant when the conventional slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA) fails. We first carry out the modulational instability (MI) analysis of a plane wave in this system by employing the linear stability analysis and investigate the influence of different physic…
We explore stability regions for solitons in the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a spatially confined region carrying a combination of self-focusing cubic and septimal terms, with a quintic one of either focusing or defocusing sign. This setting can be implemented in optical waveguides based on colloids of nanoparticles. The solitons stability is identified by solving linearized equations for small perturbations, and is found to fully comply with the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion. In the limit case of tight confinement of the nonlinearity, results are obtained in an analytical form, approxi…
In the present work, we examine the combined effects of cubic and quintic terms of the long range type in the dynamics of a double well potential. Employing a two-mode approximation, we systematically develop two cubic-quintic ordinary differential equations and assess the contributions of the long-range interactions in each of the relevant prefactors, gauging how to simplify the ensuing dynamical system. Finally, we obtain a reduced canonical description for the conjugate variables of relative population imbalance and relative phase between the two wells and proceed to a dynamical systems ana…
We consider the statics and dynamics of a stable, mobile three-dimensional (3D) spatiotemporal light bullet in a cubic-quintic nonlinear medium with a focusing cubic nonlinearity above a critical value and any defocusing quintic nonlinearity. The 3D light bullet can propagate with a constant velocity in any direction. Stability of the light bullet under a small perturbation is established numerically. We consider frontal collision between two light bullets with different relative velocities. At large velocities the collision is elastic with the bullets emerge after collision with practically no…
We construct families of fundamental, dipole, and tripole solitons in the fractional Schrödinger equation (FSE)\ incorporating self-focusing cubic and defocusing quintic terms modulated by factors $\cos ^{2}x$ and $\sin^{2}x$, respectively. While the fundamental solitons are similar to those in the model with the uniform nonlinearity, the multipole complexes exist only in the presence of the nonlinear lattice. The shapes and stability of all the solitons strongly depend on the Lévy index (LI)\ that determines the FSE fractionality. Stability areas are identified in the plane of LI and propagat…
We analyze a system of three two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equations coupled by linear terms and with the cubic-quintic (focusing-defocusing) nonlinearity. We consider two versions of the model: conservative and parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric. These models describe triple-core nonlinear optical waveguides, with balanced gain and losses in the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric case. We obtain families of soliton solutions and discuss their stability. The latter study is performed using a linear stability analysis and checked with direct numerical simulations of the evolutional system of …
We study the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the cubic-quintic combination of attractive and repulsive nonlinearities, and a trapping potential represented by a delta-function. We determine all bound states with a positive soliton profile through explicit formulas and, using bifurcation theory, we describe their behavior with respect to the propagation constant. This information is used to prove their stability by means of the rigorous theory of orbital stability of Hamiltonian systems. The presence of the trapping potential gives rise to a regime where two stable bound sta…
We observe and analyze formation, decay, and subsequent regeneration of ring-shaped clusters of (2+1)-dimensional spatial solitons (filaments) in a medium with the cubic-quintic (focusing-defocusing) self-interaction and strong dissipative nonlinearity. The cluster of filaments, that remains stable over ~17.5 Rayleigh lengths, is produced by the azimuthal modulational instability from a parent ring-shaped beam with embedded vorticity l = 1. In the course of still longer propagation, the stability of the soliton cluster is lost under the action of nonlinear losses. The annular cluster is then s…
We address the properties of optical solitons that form in media with competing cubic-quintic nonlinearity and parity-time(PT)-symmetric complex-valued external potentials. The model describes the propagation of solitons in nonlinear optical waveguides with balanced gain and loss. We study the existence, stability, and robustness of fundamental, dipole, and multipole stationary solutions in this PT-symmetric system. The corresponding eigenvalue spectra diagrams for fundamental, dipole, tripole, and quadrupole solitons are presented. We show that the eigenvalue spectra diagrams for fundamental …
We consider splitting and stabilization of second-order solitons (2-soliton breathers) in a model based on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), which includes a small quintic term, and weak resonant nonlinearity management (NLM), i.e., time-periodic modulation of the cubic coefficient, at the frequency close to that of shape oscillations of the 2-soliton. The model applies to the light propagation in media with cubic-quintic optical nonlinearities and periodic alternation of linear loss and gain, and to BEC, with the self-focusing quintic term accounting for the weak deviation of the dyn…
We study the propagation of femtosecond light pulses inside an optical fiber medium exhibiting higher-order dispersion and cubic-quintic nonlinearities. Pulse evolution in such system is governed by a higher-order nonlinear Schr% ödinger equation incorporating second-, third-, and fourth-order dispersions as well as cubic and quintic nonlinearities. Novel classes of periodic wave solutions are identified for the first time by means of an appropriate equation method. Results presented indicated the potentially rich set of periodic waves in the system under the combined influence of higher-order…
