A fully adaptive finite volume multiresolution scheme for one-dimensional strongly degenerate parabolic equations with discontinuous flux is presented. The numerical scheme is based on a finite volume discretization using the Engquist--Osher approximation for the flux and explicit time--stepping. An adaptivemultiresolution scheme with cell averages is then used to speed up CPU time and meet memory requirements. A particular feature of our scheme is the storage of the multiresolution representation of the solution in a dynamic graded tree, for the sake of data compression and to facilitate navigation. Applications to traffic flow with driver reaction and a clarifier--thickener model illustrate the efficiency of this method.
This paper develops a high order adaptive scheme for solving nonlinear Schrodinger equations. The solutions to such equations often exhibit solitary wave and local structures, which makes adaptivity essential in improving the simulation efficiency. Our scheme uses the ultra-weak discontinuous Galerkin (DG) formulation and belongs to the framework of adaptive multiresolution schemes. Various numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the excellent capability of capturing the soliton waves and the blow-up phenomenon.
In this paper, we propose a class of adaptive multiresolution (also called adaptive sparse grid) discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for simulating scalar wave equations in second order form in space. The two key ingredients of the schemes include an interior penalty DG formulation in the adaptive function space and two classes of multiwavelets for achieving multiresolution. In particular, the orthonormal Alpert's multiwavelets are used to express the DG solution in terms of a hierarchical structure, and the interpolatory multiwavelets are further introduced to enhance computational efficiency…
In this paper, we develop an adaptive multiresolution discontinuous Galerkin (DG) scheme for scalar hyperbolic conservation laws in multidimensions. Compared with previous work for linear hyperbolic equations \cite{guo2016transport, guo2017adaptive}, a class of interpolatory multiwavelets are applied to efficiently compute the nonlinear integrals over elements and edges in DG schemes. The resulting algorithm, therefore can achieve similar computational complexity as the sparse grid DG method for smooth solutions. Theoretical and numerical studies are performed taking into consideration of accu…
In this paper, we propose a class of adaptive multiresolution (also called adaptive sparse grid) ultra-weak discontinuous Galerkin (UWDG) methods for solving some nonlinear dispersive wave equations including the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation and its two dimensional generalization, the Zakharov-Kuznetsov (ZK) equation. The UWDG formulation, which relies on repeated integration by parts, was proposed for KdV equation in \cite{cheng2008discontinuous}. For the ZK equation which contains mixed derivative terms, we develop a new UWDG formulation. The $L^2$ stability and the optimal error estimat…
We are interested in numerically solving the Hamilton-Jacobi (HJ) equations, which arise in optimal control and many other applications. Oftentimes, such equations are posed in high dimensions, and this poses great numerical challenges. This work proposes a class of adaptive sparse grid (also called adaptive multiresolution) local discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods for solving Hamilton-Jacobi equations in high dimensions. By using the sparse grid techniques, we can treat moderately high dimensional cases. Adaptivity is incorporated to capture kinks and other local structures of the solutions.…
In this paper, we develop an oscillation free local discontinuous Galerkin (OFLDG) method for solving nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations. Following the idea of our recent work [J. Lu, Y. Liu, and C.-W. Shu, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 59(2021), pp. 1299-1324.], we add the damping terms to the LDG scheme to control the spurious oscillations when solutions have a large gradient. The $L^2$-stability and optimal priori error estimates for the semi-discrete scheme are established. The numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method maintains the high-order accuracy and controls the spurio…
The discontinuous Galerkin (DG) time-stepping method applied to abstract evolution equation of parabolic type is studied using a variational approach. We establish the inf-sup condition or Babuška--Brezzi condition for the DG bilinear form. Then, a nearly best approximation property and a nearly symmetric error estimate are obtained as corollaries. Moreover, the optimal order error estimates under appropriate regularity assumption on the solution are derived as direct applications of the standard interpolation error estimates. Our method of analysis is new for the DG time-stepping method; it d…

The Richards' equation is a model for flow of water in unsaturated soils. The coefficients of this (nonlinear) partial differential equation describe the permeability of the medium. Insufficient or uncertain measurements are commonly modeled by random coefficients. For flows in heterogeneous\textbackslash fractured\textbackslash porous media, the coefficients are modeled as discontinuous random fields, where the interfaces along the stochastic discontinuities represent transitions in the media. More precisely, the random coefficient is given by the sum of a (continuous) Gaussian random field a…
The analyses of interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin methods of any order k for solving elliptic and parabolic problems with Dirac line sources are presented. For the steady state case, we prove convergence of the method by deriving a priori error estimates in the L2 norm and in weighted energy norms. In addition, we prove almost optimal local error estimates in the energy norm for any approximation order. Further, almost optimal local error estimates in the L2 norm are obtained for the case of piecewise linear approximations whereas suboptimal error bounds in the L2 norm are shown for any …
A singularly perturbed parabolic problem of convection-diffusion type with a discontinuous initial condition is examined. An analytic function is identified which matches the discontinuity in the initial condition and also satisfies the homogenous parabolic differential equation associated with the problem. The difference between this analytical function and the solution of the parabolic problem is approximated numerically, using an upwind finite difference operator combined with an appropriate layer-adapted mesh. The numerical method is shown to be parameter-uniform. Numerical results are pre…
We consider fully discrete time-space approximations of abstract linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) consisting of an $hp$-version discontinuous Galerkin (DG) time stepping scheme in conjunction with standard (conforming) Galerkin discretizations in space. We derive abstract computable a posteriori error bounds resulting, for instance, in concrete bounds in $L_{\infty}(I;L_2(Ω))$- and $L_{2}(I;H^{1}(Ω))$-type norms when $I$ is the temporal and $Ω$ the spatial domain for the PDE. We base our methodology for the analysis on a novel space-time reconstruction approach. Our appro…

In this article, we have considered a time-dependent two-parameter singularly perturbed parabolic problem with discontinuous convection coefficient and source term. The problem contains the parameters $ε$ and $μ$ multiplying the diffusion and convection coefficients, respectively. A boundary layer develops on both sides of the boundaries as a result of these parameters. An interior layer forms near the point of discontinuity due to the discontinuity in the convection and source term. The width of the interior and boundary layers depends on the ratio of the perturbation parameters. We discuss t…
This paper reviews the adaptive sparse grid discontinuous Galerkin (aSG-DG) method for computing high dimensional partial differential equations (PDEs) and its software implementation. The C\texttt{++} software package called AdaM-DG, implementing the aSG-DG method, is available on Github at \url{https://github.com/JuntaoHuang/adaptive-multiresolution-DG}. The package is capable of treating a large class of high dimensional linear and nonlinear PDEs. We review the essential components of the algorithm and the functionality of the software, including the multiwavelets used, assembling of biline…
We consider the time discretization of a linear parabolic problem by the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method using piecewise polynomials of degree at most $r-1$ in $t$, for $r\ge1$ and with maximum step size~$k$. It is well known that the spatial $L_2$-norm of the DG error is of optimal order $k^r$ globally in time, and is, for $r\ge2$, superconvergent of order $k^{2r-1}$ at the nodes. We show that on the $n$th subinterval $(t_{n-1},t_n)$, the dominant term in the DG error is proportional to the local right Radau polynomial of degree $r$. This error profile implies that the DG error is of order…
Lattice Boltzmann Methods (LBM) stand out for their simplicity and computational efficiency while offering the possibility of simulating complex phenomena. While they are optimal for Cartesian meshes, adapted meshes have traditionally been a stumbling block since it is difficult to predict the right physics through various levels of meshes. In this work, we design a class of fully adaptive LBM methods with dynamic mesh adaptation and error control relying on multiresolution analysis. This wavelet-based approach allows to adapt the mesh based on the regularity of the solution and leads to a ver…
A singularly perturbed parabolic problem of convection-diffusion type with a discontinuous initial condition is examined. A particular complimentary error function is identified which matches the discontinuity in the initial condition. The difference between this analytical function and the solution of the parabolic problem is approximated numerically. A co-ordinate transformation is used so that a layer-adapted mesh can be aligned to the interior layer present in the solution. Numerical analysis is presented for the associated numerical method, which establishes that the numerical method is a…
Lattice-Boltzmann methods are known for their simplicity, efficiency and ease of parallelization, usually relying on uniform Cartesian meshes with a strong bond between spatial and temporal discretization. This fact complicates the crucial issue of reducing the computational cost and the memory impact by automatically coarsening the grid where a fine mesh is unnecessary, still ensuring the overall quality of the numerical solution through error control. This work provides a possible answer to this interesting question, by connecting, for the first time, the field of lattice-Boltzmann Methods (…
A variable stepsize exponential multistep integrator, with contour integral approximation of the operator-valued exponential functions, is proposed for solving semilinear parabolic equations with nonsmooth initial data. By this approach, the exponential k-step method would have $k$th-order convergence in approximating a mild solution, possibly nonsmooth at the initial time. In consistency with the theoretical analysis, a numerical example shows that the method can achieve high-order convergence in the maximum norm for semilinear parabolic equations with discontinuous initial data.
We consider locally stabilized, conforming finite element schemes on completely unstructured simplicial space-time meshes for the numerical solution of parabolic initial-boundary value problems with variable, possibly discontinuous in space and time, coefficients. Distributional sources are also admitted. Discontinuous coefficients, non-smooth boundaries, changing boundary conditions, non-smooth or incompatible initial conditions, and non-smooth right-hand sides can lead to non-smooth solutions. We present new a priori and a posteriori error estimates for low-regularity solutions. In order to …
