We have studied the central parts of seven early-type galaxies -- the members of the X-ray-bright galaxy group NGC 80 -- by means of integral-field spectroscopy at the Russian 6m telescope. We searched for signatures of synchronous evolution of the group galaxies. The following results have been obtained. Five galaxies have revealed old stellar populations in the bulges, with the SSP-equivalent ages from 10 to 15 Gyr. A moderate-luminous S0 galaxy IC 1548 demonstrates consequences of recent star formation burst: the SSP-equivalent age of the bulge is 3 Gyr, that of the nucleus -- 1.5 Gyr. It is also in this galaxy that we have found a circumnuclear polar gaseous disk which changes smoothly to counterrotating one at radii larger than 3 arcsec(1 kpc). Probably, IC 1548 had suffered an interaction with external gas accretion which might also provoke the central star formation burst. In the giant E0 galaxy NGC 83 which is projected close to the group center but has a line-of-sight velocity redshifted by 600 km/s with respect to the group systemic velocity, we have observed a compact massive stellar-gaseous disk with the radius of some 2 kpc demonstrating current star formation. Consequently, NGC 83, just as IC 1548, has the young stellar population in the center. We speculate that a small subgroup leaded by NGC 83 is in process of infalling into the old massive group around NGC 80.
We compare the dense molecular gas content in two barred spiral galaxies, NGC 6764 (classified LINER) and NGC 5430 (a Wolf-Rayet galaxy). We find a significant difference in the proportion of dense molecular gas between the two galaxies. CS(3-2) is detected in NGC 6764 but not in NGC 5430, even though the intensities of CO(2-1) and HCN(1-0) are higher in the latter galaxy. The non detection in NGC 5430 indicates that the CS abundance in that galaxy is unusually low, or that HCN is subthermally excited. To complement these observations, we discuss the ionization source in the nucleus of the LIN…
As a result of bidimensional spectroscopy of the central parts of two nearby lenticular galaxies, NGC 1023 and NGC 7332, undertaken with the Multi-Pupil Field Spectrograph of the 6m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory, their chemically decoupled stellar nuclei are found to be substantially younger than the surrounding bulges: the mean age of the nuclear stellar populations is 7 billion years in NGC 1023 and 2.5 +/- 0.5 billion years in NGC 7332. The morphological analysis undertaken by Seifert and Scorza (1996) for NGC 7332 and by us for NGC 1023 has revealed a existence of sepa…
The results of the stellar photometry of the images ACS/WFC and WFPC2 of the HST are used to study stellar population and spatial distribution of stars in three edge-on galaxies: NGC 891, NGC 4144 and NGC 4244. The measuring of the number density of the old stars revealed two stellar substructures in these galaxies: thick disk and halo. The borders of these substructures consisting mainly of red giants, are determined by the change of number density gradient of the old stars. The revealed halos have flattened shapes and extend up to 25 kpc from the galaxy planes. The obtained results of number…
We present the results of stellar photometry of polar-ring galaxies NGC 2685 and NGC 4650A, using the archival data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Planetary Camera 2. Polar rings of these galaxies were resolved into ~800 and ~430 stellar objects in the B, V and Ic bands, considerable part of which are blue supergiants located in the young stellar complexes. The stellar features in the CM-diagrams are best represented by isochrones with metallicity Z = 0.008. The process of star formation in the polar rings of both galaxies was continuous and the age of the youngest detec…
Maps and measurements of the J=1-0, J=2-1, J=3-2, J=4-3 12CO, the J=1-0, J=2-1, and J=3-2 13CO lines in the central arcminute squared of NGC1068, NGC2146, NGC3079, NGC4826, and NGC7469, as well as 492 GHz [CI] maps in three of these are used to model the circumnuclear molecular gas in these galaxies. In all five objects, the bright CO concentrations mapped have line intensities that require two distinct gas components for satisfactory fits. The physical condition of the molecular gas differs from galaxy to galaxy. High kinetic temperatures of 125-150 K occur in NGC2146 and NGC3079. Very high d…
The aim is to investigate the region of the sky around NGC4410/Mrk1325 for objects which are physically associated with this active, double nucleus galaxy. We use archived data to study the placement, brightness, X-ray properties and redshifts of objects within 60' of the bright, central galaxy. It is found that pairs of quasars are aligned across NGC 4410 which, if ejected from it, have equal and opposite ejection velocities and fall very close to the quantized Karlsson redshift peaks for quasars. X-ray sources and Abell galaxy clusters at higher redshifts appear elongated along directions aw…
Hubble Space Telescope archive data are used to perform photometry of stars in seven fields at the center and periphery of the galaxy NGC2366. The variation of the number density of stars of various ages with galactocentric radius and along the minor axis of the galaxy are determined. The boundaries of the thin and thick disks of the galaxy are found. The inferred sizes of the subsystems of NGC2366 ($Z_{thin} = 4$ kpc and $Z_{thick} = 8$ kpc for the thin and thick disks, respectively) are more typical for spiral galaxies. Evidence for a stellar halo is found at the periphery of NGC2366 beyond …
We present a new detection of a Massive Dark Object in the S0 Galaxy NGC 4350, obtained applying a new dynamical model on ground-based photometric and kinematic data already present in literature.
In this paper we analyse the relations between a previously described oblate Jaffe model for an ellipsoidal galaxy and the observed quantities for NGC 2974, and obtain the length and velocity scales for a relevant elliptical galaxy model. We then derive the finite total mass of the model from these scales, and finally find a good fit of an isotropic oblate Jaffe model by using the Gauss-Hermite fit parameters and the observed ellipticity of the galaxy NGC 2974. The model is also used to predict the total luminous mass of NGC 2974, assuming that the influence of dark matter in this galaxy on th…
We present near-infrared spectra of the nuclear disk in the nearby radio galaxy NGC 5128 (Centaurus A). On the basis of the observed strengths of the [S III] 0.9532um and [Fe II] 1.2567um lines, we classify NGC 5128 as a LINER. Modeling of the strengths of these and additional lines suggests that the nuclear region is powered by shocks rather than photoionization.
Recently, the CANGAROO-II telescope detected diffuse TeV gamma-ray emission from a nearby edge-on starburst galaxy, NGC 253. The emission mechanism is discussed in this report. We review the emissions of radio-to-TeV gamma-rays from NGC 253, and present a model of the non-thermal emissions due to synchrotron radiations and inverse Compton scatterings. A halo model successfully explains the multiband spectrum of NGC 253.
We have discovered 13 new candidate Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in the dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822, increasing its total number to 17 objects. Our sample of candidate PNe is complete down to 3.5 mag below the brightest PN.
Context: The spatial distribution of the stellar populations inside a spheroidal system and their kinematical properties supply important informations about the formation process. Aims: We have performed a detailed stellar population analysis using long slit spectroscopic observations up to almost one effective radius of two different early-type galaxies of low density regions of the local Universe: NGC 1052, a E4 Liner prototype of a loose group that has a stellar rotating disc, and NGC 7796, a E1 of the field which shows a kinematically distinct core. The mean luminosity-weighted stellar age…
CCD observations in V, I and H$_α$ for NGC 3389 are used to present photometry of 61 HII regions. Their $α$ and $δ$ positions, diameters and their absolute luminosities have been determined. The luminosity and size distribution functions of the HII regions in NGC 3389 are discussed.
We find that NGC6789 is the most nearby example of a Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy known to date. With the help of WFPC2 aboard the Hubble Space Telescope, we resolve NGC6789 into over 15,000 point sources in the V and I bands. The young stars of NGC6789 are found exclusively near the center of the galaxy. The red giant population identified at large galacticentric radii yields a distance of about 3.6 Mpc, a stellar metallicity [Fe/H] of about -2, and a minimum age of about 1 Gyr. Despite its isolated location in the Local Void, its low metallicity, and its active star formation, the properties of …
The galaxy cluster RXJ 0152.7-1357 is emitting X-rays at the high rate of 148 counts $ks^{-1}$. It would be one of the most luminous X-ray clusters known if it is at its redshift distance of z = .8325. It is conspicuously elongated, however, toward the bright, X-ray active galaxy NGC 720 about 14 arcmin away. At the same distance on the other side of NGC 720, and almost perfectly aligned, is an X-ray BSO of 5.8 cts/ks. It is reported here that the redshift of this quasar is z = .8312.
We present new multi-wavelength data for the NGC 4410 galaxy group. This group contains the peculiar radio galaxy NGC 4410A, which has a distorted double-lobed radio structure. NGC 4410A is strongly interacting with three nearby galaxies, and has a peculiar ring-like optical morphology, a number of luminous H II regions, as well as as tidal tails and bridges variously visible in optical, HI, and X-ray light. The gravitational interaction has affected the interstellar matter, the star formation rate, and the radio lobes in this system.
We present a study of accurate stellar parameters and iron abundances for 39 giants and 16 dwarfs in the 13 open clusters IC2714, IC4651, IC4756, NGC2360, NGC2423, NGC2447 (M93), NGC2539, NGC2682 (M67), NGC3114, NGC3680, NGC4349, NGC5822, NGC6633. The analysis was done using a set of high-resolution and high-S/N spectra obtained with the UVES spectrograph (VLT). These clusters are currently being searched for planets using precise radial velocities. For all the clusters, the derived average metallicities are close to solar. Interestingly, the values derived seem to depend on the line-list used…
Aims. The extraplanar stellar populations of highly-inclined disk galaxies IC 2233, IC 5052, NGC 4631 and NGC 5023 are analyzed with the goal to quantify their vertical extent and structure. Methods. Based on the single-star photometry, we separate different stellar populations and analyze their spatial distribution. Results. On archival images obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope ACS/WFC the surroundings of these galaxies are well resolved into stars with the red giant population (RGB) identified far above the galaxy mid-planes. We find that there are a profound change in slope of the num…
We present a catalog of 535 planetary nebulae discovered in the flattened elliptical galaxy NGC 4697, using the FORS1 Cassegrain spectrograph of the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory at Cerro Paranal, Chile. The catalog provides positions (x, y coordinates relative to the center of light of NGC 4697, as well as RA, Dec.), and, for almost all PNs, the magnitude m(5007) and the heliocentric radial velocity in km/s.
We have observed the nearby spiral galaxy NGC6503 using Chandra. Seven discrete sources associated with the galaxy have been found, one of them coincident with its Liner-starburst nucleus. One of the sources corresponds to a ULX with Lx >~ 10e39 ergs/s. Previous ROSAT observations of the galaxy show that this source has varied by at least a factor 3 in the last 6 years. No evidence is found for strong diffuse emission in the nuclear region or the presence of a low luminosity AGN.
We present observations of four nearby early-type galaxies with previously known nuclear stellar disks using two instruments on-board the Hubble Space Telescope. We observed NGC4128, NGC4612, and NGC5308 with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2, and the same three galaxies, plus NGC4570, with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. We have detected a red nucleus in NGC4128, a blue nucleus in NGC4621, and a blue disk in NGC5308. Additionally, we have discovered a blue disk-like feature with position angle ~15 degrees from the major axis in NGC4621. In NGC5308 there is evidence for a blue region…
We present HI line and 20-cm radio continuum observations of the NGC 1511 galaxy group obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The data reveal an extended, rather disturbed HI distribution for the peculiar starburst galaxy NGC 1511 and a narrow bridge to its small companion galaxy, NGC 1511B, which has been severely distorted by the interaction/collision between the two galaxies. No stellar counterpart to the gaseous bridge has been detected. In addition, we find that the peculiar optical ridge to the east of NGC 1511 is probably the stellar remnant of a galaxy completed disrupted…
As part of a continuing survey of nearby galaxies, we have mapped the neutral gas content of the low surface brightness, Magellanic-type galaxy NGC 3109 --- and its environment, including the Antlia dwarf galaxy --- at unprecedented velocity resolution and brightness sensitivity. The HI mass of NGC 3109 is measured to be (3.8 +/- 0.5) x 10^8 Msun. A substantial warp in the disk of NGC 3109 is detected in the HI emission image in the form of an extended low surface brightness feature. We report a positive detection in HI of the nearby Antlia dwarf galaxy, and measure its total neutral gas mass …
We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) maps of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC3147 of the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) sample at 1.8'' x 1.6'' and 1.4'' x 1.2'' resolution respectively. Identifying the presence of a bar in NGC3147 we also compute the gravity torques exerted from the stellar bar on the gas.
A quasar search in the region of the active galaxy NGC 1097 yielded 31 quasars in 1984. After completion of the 2dF survey in 2004 the number of catalogued quasars just within 1 degree of the galaxy increased to 142. About 38 $\pm$ 10 of these are in excess of average background values. The evidence in 1984 is confirmed here by an increasing density of quasars as one approaches NGC 1097. Quasars within 1 degree differ from the background by being significantly brighter. There also appear two elliptical rings or arcs of quasars at r $\sim$ 20'and 40'.
We present a HI synthesis imaging study of NGC 864 (CIG 96), a spiral galaxy well isolated from similarly sized companions, yet presenting an intriguing asymmetry in its integral HI spectrum. The asymmetry in the HI profile is associated with a strong kinematical perturbation in the gaseous envelope of the galaxy, where at one side the decay of the rotation curve is faster than keplerian. We detect a small (M(HI) = 5 x 10^6 Msun) galaxy with a faint optical counterpart at around 80 kpc projected distance from NGC 864. This galaxy is probably not massive enough to have caused the perturbations …
Deep J, H, and K images are used to probe the evolved stellar contents in the central regions of the Sculptor group galaxies NGC55, NGC300, and NGC7793. The brightest stars are massive red supergiants (RSGs) with K ~ 15 - 15.5. The peak RSG brightness is constant to within ~0.5 mag in K, suggesting that NGC55, NGC300, and NGC7793 are at comparable distances. Comparisons with bright RSGs in the Magellanic Clouds indicate that the difference in distance modulus with respect to the LMC is = 7.5. A rich population of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, which isochrones indicate have ages between …
The ASCA and BeppoSAX spectra of the Circinus Galaxy and NGC 1068 are analysed and compared with photoionization models based on cloudy. In the case of Circinus, a single, mildly ionized reflector can account for the line spectrum, while in NGC 1068 at least three different reflectors (with different ionization states) are needed. We suggest that the reflector in Circinus, and the low ionized one in NGC1068 are the inner and visible part of the material responsible for the X-ray absorption. With this assumption, we estimate for the inner radius of the absorber a value of 0.2 pc for Circinus an…
We report on further observations of the luminous halo of NGC 5907. New V, I and B deep photometry confirms the existence of an extended stellar halo redder than the disk. Our data are consistent with a faint halo, or very thick disk, composed of a metal-rich old stellar population. We propose that it could be the remnant of a merged small elliptical, and we support our hypothesis with N-body simulations.
Deep Effelsberg HI spectra of the one-armed, bright Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC 4254 are presented.Five different positions were observed in the 21 cm HI line with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope: one in the center and 4 located one HPBW to the NE, NW, SW, and SE, respectively, from the galaxy center. The spectra are compared to existing deep VLA observations, and the single dish and interferometric HI data are used to constrain a dynamical model which includes the effects of ram pressure. The peculiar, one-armed spiral pattern of NGC 4254 and its distorted and kinematically perturbed atomi…
We present direct kinematic evidence for bar streaming motions in two active galaxies with boxy stellar bulges. The Hawaii Imaging Fabry-Perot Interferometer was used on the Canada-France-Hawaii 3.6-m telescope and the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope to derive the two-dimensional velocity field of the line-emitting gas in the disks of the Sc galaxy NGC 3079 and the Sb galaxy NGC 4388. In contrast to previous work based on long-slit data, the detection of the bar potential from the Fabry-Perot data does not rely on the existence of inner Lindblad resonances or strong bar-induced shocks. Si…
The kinematics, structure, and stellar population properties in the centers of two brightest early-type galaxies of the Leo II group, NGC 3607 and NGC 3608, are studied by means of integral-field spectroscopy. The kinematically distinct areas in the centers of these galaxies, with radii of 6" and 5" respectively, are found also to be chemically distinct. These stellar structures are characterized by enhanced magnesium-line strength in the integrated spectra. However, we have not found any mean stellar age differences between the decoupled cores and their outskirts. Analysis of the two-dimensio…
A renewed attempt to detect radio recombination lines from external galaxies has resulted in the measurement of lines from several bright starburst galaxies. The lines are produced by hydrogen ionized by young, high-mass stars and are diagnostic of the conditions and gas dynamics in the starburst regions without problems of dust obscuration. We present here detections of the lines H91alpha and H92alpha near 8.6 GHz from the starburst nuclei in NGC 3256, NGC 4945, and the Circinus galaxy using the ATCA and VLA. Modelling the line emitting region as a collection of H II regions, we derive the re…
We present visible and near-infrared images of the amorphous dwarf galaxy NGC 1705 in the $B$, $V$, $R$, $J$, $H$, and $K$ bands. Optical and near infrared colors in the galaxy are consistent with a composite population with colors similar to those of the bluest Sc nuclei. The contribution of young stars to the disk population of the galaxy decreases outwards from the center. In the near infrared images we detect three unresolved point sources, two of which have colors and luminosities comparable to intermediate age LMC clusters.
We present UBVI CCD photometry of the stellar contents and globular cluster(GC) candidates in the spiral galaxy NGC 300 in the Sculptor group. Color-magnitude diagrams for 18 OB associations having more than 30 member stars are presented. The slope of the initial mass function for the bright stars in NGC 300 is estimated to be Gamma = -2.6 +/- 0.3. Assuming the distance to NGC 300 of (m-M)_0 = 26.53 +/- 0.07, the mean absolute magnitude of three brightest blue stars is obtained to be <M_V^{BSG}(3)> = -8.95 mag. We have performed search for GCs in NGC 300 and have found 17 GC candidates in this…
Two absorption line indices, Ca II and Hdelta/FeI4045, measured from high resolution spectra are used with evolutionary synthesis models to verify the presence of a young stellar population in NGC 5018. The derived age of this population is about ~2.8 Gyr with a metallicity roughly solar and it completely dominates the integrated light of the galaxy near 4000 A.
We present observations of the CO 2-1 and 3-2 transitions toward the merging galaxies of NGC6090 with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) (The Submillimeter Array (SMA) is a joint project between the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and is funded by the Smithsonian Institution and the Academia Sinica.). The high resolution CO data reveal three gas concentrations. The main component is peaking in the overlap region between the two galaxies, where the near-IR a nd radio continuum emission are weak. The CO 2-1 emission from the face-…
Detailed modeling of the different regions of NGC 7130 is presented, accounting for its composite nature of AGN and starburst galaxy. Shock waves, created by stellar winds from hot massive stars and by supernova ejecta, are evident in the continuum and line spectra emitted from the clouds. The AGN starburst connection is discussed on the basis of model results, considering in particular the distribution of densities and velocities throughout the galaxy.
NGC 3310 is a local galaxy with an intense, ongoing starburst thought to result from a merger with a companion galaxy. It has several known tidal features in the northwest and southern regions around the main galactic disc, as well as a closed, tidal loop emerging from the eastern side of the disc and rejoining in the north. This loop appears to be distinct from the rest of the shells surrounding NGC3310 and is the first of its kind to be detected in a starburst galaxy. In this work, we present UBVR photometry to faint surface brightness levels of this debris network, and we explore various st…
We have carried out the wind analysis of six A-type supergiants in NGC 300. The derived Wind Momentum-Luminosity Relationship is compared with that of Galactic and M31 blue supergiants and with theoretical models.
Three molecular clouds have been mapped in the nearby metal-poor dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822 using the Owens Valley Millimeter-Wave Interferometer. Based on upper limits to the virial masses of the clouds, the CO-to-H2 conversion factor in NGC 6822 is <2.2+/-1.3 times larger than the Galactic value. Conversion factors obtained for Galactic molecular clouds, NGC 6822, and the SMC are consistent with the variation in the CO-to-H2 conversion factor being linearly proportional to the oxygen abundance of the galaxy. However, the uncertainties are sufficiently large that equal conversion factors…
We present neutral hydrogen observations of the nearby edge-on spiral galaxy NGC891 which show extended extra-planar emission up to distances of 15 kpc from the plane. 3D modeling of the galaxy shows that this emission comes from halo gas rotating more slowly than the gas in the disk.We derive the rotation curves of the gas above the plane and find a gradient in rotation velocity of -15 km/s/kpc. We also present preliminary results of a galactic fountain model applied to NGC891.
Recent far-UV (FUV) and near-UV (NUV) observations of the nearby galaxy NGC4625 made by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) show the presence of an extended UV disk reaching 4 times the optical radius of the galaxy. The UV-to-optical colors suggest that the bulk of the stars in the disk of NGC4625 are currently being formed, providing a unique opportunity to study today the physics of star formation under conditions similar to those when the normal disks of spiral galaxies like the Milky Way first formed. In the case of NGC4625, the star formation in the extended disk is likely to be trigger…
We present the detection of nuclear stellar discs in the low-luminosity elliptical galaxies NGC 4458 and NGC 4478, which are known to host a kinematically-decoupled core. Using archival HST imaging, and available absorption line-strength index data based on ground-based spectroscopy, we investigate the photometric parameters and the properties of the stellar populations of these central structures. Their scale length, h, and face-on central surface brightness, mu_0^c, fit on mu_0^c-h relation for galaxy discs. For NGC 4458 these parameters are typical for nuclear discs, while the same quantiti…
We present 10.55 GHz observations of strong density-wave spiral NGC 3627. Total power and polarization maps with a resolution of 1.13', sensitive to a weak extended emmision were obtained. In the analysiz we used also available data in the CO ans H_alpha lines. We present simple modelling results showing the imprtance of large-scale dynamo-type magnetic field present despite the strong density-wave action in this galaxy.
HST/WFPC2 images resolved NGC 7673 into a large number of star clusters. Among these, 31 fall inside the IUE large aperture, which was used to acquire an integrated ultraviolet spectrum of the galaxy. We have fitted Starburst99 evolutionary synthesis models to the observed colours of these clusters and derived ages, reddenings, and masses of the clusters. Then a simple sum of the clusters synthetic UV spectra has been compared to the observed IUE spectrum, in order to investigate the star formation history of NGC 7673.
ASCA observations of NGC 4636 and a southern region have revealed extended X-ray emission to a radius of about 300 kpc from the galaxy. The symmetric nature of the observed surface brightness around NGC 4636 indicates its association to this galaxy rather than to the Virgo cluster. Model independent estimation of the gravitational mass profile shows a flattening at a radius of $20 \sim 35$ kpc, where the total mass reaches $\sim 6\times 10^{11} M_\odot$ and a mass-to-light ratio of 23. The mass still increases to larger radii, reaching $9\times10^{12} M_\odot$ with a mass-to-light ratio of 300…
We present the data and methods that we have used to perform a detailed UV-optical study of the nearby dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 4214 using multifilter HST/WFPC2+STIS photometry. We explain the process followed to obtain high-quality photometry and astrometry of the stellar and cluster populations of this galaxy. We describe the procedure used to transform magnitudes and colors into physical parameters using spectral energy distributions. The data show the existence of both young and old stellar populations that can be resolved at the distance of NGC 4214 (2.94 Mpc) and we perform a general d…
We present the results of ATCA HI line and 20-cm radio continuum observations of the galaxy Quartet NGC 6845. The HI emission extends over all four galaxies but can only be associated clearly with the two spiral galaxies, NGC 6845A and B, which show signs of strong tidal interaction. We derive a total HI mass of at least 1.8 x 10^10 Msun, most of which is associated with NGC 6845A, the largest galaxy of the group. We investigate the tidal interaction between NGC 6845A and B by studying the kinematics of distinct HI components and their relation to the known HII regions. No HI emission is detec…
The NGC4410 group of galaxies provides us a rare opportunity to study a nearby (97 h75^-1 Mpc) example of a radio galaxy (NGC4410A) embedded in an extended X-ray source, with evidence for star formation that can be readily spatially distinguished from regions dominated by the AGN and shocks. We present broadband and narrowband optical images along with optical and IUE ultraviolet spectroscopy for the radio galaxy NGC 4410A and its companion NGC 4410B. Our H-alpha+[NII] images reveal six luminous HII regions (L_H-alpha ~ 1e40 erg/s distributed in an arc near NGC 4410A. Partially completing the …
In this paper we analyze the problem of the total mass and the total mass-to-light ratio of the early-type galaxy NGC 4649 (M60). We have used two independent techniques: the X-ray methodology which is based on the temperature of the X-ray halo of NGC 4649 and the tracer mass estimator (TME) which uses globular clusters (GCs) observed in this galaxy. We calculated the mass in Newtonian and MOdified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) approaches and found that interior to 3 effective radii (Re) there is no need for large amounts of dark matter. Beyond 3Re dark matter starts to play important dynamical ro…
We characterize the stellar populations in the nuclear region of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 4900 using the integral field spectrometer OASIS and the synthesis code LavalSB and the code from Mollá & Garc\'ıa-Vargas (2000) for the young ($< 10$ Myr) and the old stellar populations, respectively. The high spatial resolution of the instrument allows us to find an old population uniformely distributed and younger regions located at the end of the galaxy bar and on each side of a nuclear bar.
(Context) When a galaxy acquires material from the outside, it is likely that the resulting angular momentum of the accreted material is decoupled from that of the pre-existing galaxy. The presence of stars counter-rotating with respect to other stars and/or gas represents an extreme case of decoupling. (Aims) NGC5719, an almost edge-on Sab galaxy with a prominent skewed dust lane, shows a spectacular on-going interaction with its face-on Sbc companion NGC5713. Observations of such interacting systems provide insight into the processes at work in assembling and reshaping galaxies. (Methods) St…
We identified 21 new Planetary Nebula (PN) candidates in the Sculptor Group galaxy NGC 55. We determined a most likely distance of 2.00 +/- 0.2 Mpc using the Planetary Nebulae Luminosity Function (PNLF) method. The distance to NGC 55 is larger than previously determined distances, which means that the Sculptor Group is a bit further away from the Local Group than previously thought. The distance to NGC 55 is again similar to the distance of NGC 300, adding support to the suggestion that these galaxies form a bound pair.
We present a CFH12K wide field survey of the carbon star population in and around NGC 3109. Carbon stars, the brightest members of the intermediate-age population, were found nearly exclusively in and near the disk of NGC 3109, ruling out the existence of an extensive intermediate-age halo like the one found in NGC 6822. Over 400 carbon stars identified have < M_I > = -4.71, confirming the nearly universality of mean magnitude of C star populations in Local Group galaxies. Star counts over the field reveal that NGC 3109 is a truncated disk shaped galaxy without an extensive stellar halo. The m…
We present the {\it Spitzer} Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) and Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC 315. After removal of the host galaxy's stellar emission, we detected for the first time an infrared-red nucleus in NGC 315. We measured the spectral energy distribution (SED) for this active nucleus with wavelength range covering from radio to X-ray, and obtained the bolometric luminosity of $\rm L_{bol} \approx 1.9 \times 10^{43} ergs s^{-1}$, corresponding to an extremely low Eddington ratio (L/L$_{\rm Edd}$) of 4.97 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$. …
We present the first measurement of the stellar kinematics in the polar ring of NGC 4650A. There is well defined rotation, with the stars and gas rotating in the same direction, and with similar amplitude. The gaseous and stellar kinematics suggest an approximately flat rotation curve, providing further support for the hypothesis that the polar material resides in a disk rather than in a ring. The kinematics of the emission line gas at and near the center of the S0 suggests that the polar disk lacks a central hole. We have not detected evidence for two, equal mass, counterrotating stellar pola…
We have detected diffuse soft X-ray emission (0.4-1 keV) from the disk of the spiral galaxy NGC 2403 with Chandra. This diffuse emission (with a total luminosity of 2.1 x 10^38 erg/s and a gas temperature of 2-8 x 10^6 K) is well separated from the numerous bright point sources. NGC 2403 is a luminous spiral galaxy with a high rate of star formation. Recent HI observations have revealed an extended HI halo with anomalous velocities and a general inflow towards the central regions of the galaxy. This result and the present detection of a diffuse, hot X-ray emitting gas point at a very active di…
The discovery of multiple MSs in NGC2808 and Omega Centauri, and multiple SGBs in NGC1851 and NGC6388 has challenged the long-held paradigm that GCs consist of simple stellar populations. This picture has been further complicated by recent studies of the LMC intermediate-age clusters, where the MSTO was found to be bimodal or broadened. We have undertaken a study of archival HST images of LMC and SMC clusters with the aim of measuring the frequency of clusters with evidence of multiple or prolonged star formation events and determining their main properties. In this paper, we analyse the CMD o…
