Advances in the ab initio description of nuclear three-cluster systems

We introduce the extension of the ab initio no-core shell model with continuum to describe three-body cluster systems. We present results for the ground state of 6He and show improvements with respect to the description obtained within the no-core shell model and the no-core shell model/resonating group methods.

Properties of $^{12}$C in the {\it ab initio} nuclear shell-model

We obtain properties of $^{12}$C in the {\it ab initio} no-core nuclear shell-model. The effective Hamiltonians are derived microscopically from the realistic CD-Bonn and the Argonne V8' nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials as a function of the finite harmonic oscillator basis space. Binding energies, excitation spectra and electromagnetic properties are presented for model spaces up to $5\hbarΩ$. The favorable comparison with available data is a consequence of the underlying NN interaction rather than a phenomenological fit.

Toward ab initio charge symmetry breaking in nuclear energy density functionals

We propose a new approach to determine the strength of the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) term in the framework of nuclear density functional theory. It is shown that once ab initio calculations are available including accurate description of isospin symmetry breaking terms in medium and heavy nuclei, the mass difference of mirror nuclei as well as the neutron-skin thickness of doubly-closed-shell nuclei can be used to constrain the strength of the CSB interaction with an uncertainty less than $ 6 \, \% $, separately from other isospin symmetry breaking forces. Quantifying statistical uncertainties in ab initio nuclear physics using Lagrange multipliers

Theoretical predictions need quantified uncertainties for a meaningful comparison to experimental results. This is an idea which presently permeates the field of theoretical nuclear physics. In light of the recent progress in estimating theoretical uncertainties in ab initio nuclear physics, we here present and compare methods for evaluating the statistical part of the uncertainties. Effects of tensor forces in nuclear spin-orbit splittings from ab initio calculations

A systematic and specific pattern due to the effects of the tensor forces is found in the evolution of spin-orbit splittings in neutron drops. This result is obtained from relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock theory using the bare nucleon-nucleon interaction. It forms an important guide for future microscopic derivations of relativistic and nonrelativistic nuclear energy density functionals.

Symplectic no-core configuration interaction framework for ab initio nuclear structure

We introduce a symplectic no-core configuration interaction (SpNCCI) framework for ab initio nuclear structure calculations, in a correlated many-body basis which encodes an approximate Sp(3,R) symmetry of the nucleus. Such a scheme potentially provides a means of restricting the many-body space to include only those highly-excited configurations which dominantly contribute to the nuclear wave function. Ab initio nuclear structure simulations: the speculative $^{14}$F nucleus

We present results from ab initio No-Core Full Configuration simulations of the exotic proton-rich nucleus $^{14}$F whose first experimental observation is expected soon. The calculations with JISP16 NN interaction are performed up to the $N_{\max}=8$ basis space. The binding energy is evaluated using an extrapolation technique. This technique is generalized to excitation energies, verified in calculations of $^6$Li and applied to $^{14}$B, the $^{14}$F mirror, for which some data are available.

New symmetry-adapted ab initio approach to nuclear reactions for intermediate-mass nuclei

With a view toward describing reactions of intermediate-mass nuclei from first principles, we present first results for the norm and Hamiltonian overlaps (kernels) for the p-α, p-16O and p-20Ne cluster systems using realistic nucleon-nucleon interactions. Summation of Parquet diagrams as an ab initio method in nuclear structure calculations

In this work we discuss the summation of the Parquet class of diagrams within Green's function theory as a possible framework for ab initio nuclear structure calculations. The theory is presented and some numerical details are discussed, in particular the approximations employed. We apply the Parquet method to a simple model, and compare our results with those from an exact solution. The main conclusion is that even at the level of approximation presented here, the results shows good agreement with other comparable ab initio approaches.

Accelerating Ab Initio Nuclear Physics Calculations with GPUs

This paper describes some applications of GPU acceleration in ab initio nuclear structure calculations. Specifically, we discuss GPU acceleration of the software package MFDn, a parallel nuclear structure eigensolver. We modify the matrix construction stage to run partly on the GPU. On the Titan supercomputer at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, this produces a speedup of approximately 2.2x - 2.7x for the matrix construction stage and 1.2x - 1.4x for the entire run.

Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory is a new many-body approach that is firmly rooted in the symmetries of QCD. Asymmetric Nuclear Matter and Neutron Star Properties in Relativistic ab initio Theory in the Full Dirac Space

The long-standing controversy about the isospin dependence of the effective Dirac mass in ab initio calculations of asymmetric nuclear matter is clarified by solving the relativistic Brueckner-Hartree-Fock equations in the full Dirac space. The symmetry energy and its slope parameter at the saturation density are $E_{\text{sym}}(ρ_0)=33.1$ MeV and $L=65.2$ MeV, in agreement with empirical and experimental values. Further applications predict the neutron star radius $R_{1.4M_\odot}\approx 12$ km and the maximum mass of a neutron star $M_{\text{max}}\leq 2.4M_\odot$.

Nuclear medium effects in neutrino- and antineutrino-nucleus scattering

In this paper we study the influence of nuclear medium effects on quasi-elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering processes. We focus on effects provided by the nuclear mean field and random phase correlations and pay special attention to differences between neutrino- and antineutrino-induced reactions. We confront our results with the T2K and MiniBooNE data for both neutrinos and antineutrinos and the neutrino-antineutrino asymmetry. In view of the recently published ab initio results we provide a careful comparison between our cross section predictions and the ab-initio calculations.
