Global conservation laws imply superselection rules (SSR) which restrict the operations that are possible on any given state. Imposing the additional constraint of local operations and classical communication (LOCC) forbids the transfer of quantum systems between spatially separated sites. In the case of particle conservation this imposes a SSR for local particle number. That is, the coherences between subspaces of fixed particle number at each site are not accessible and any state is therefore equivalent to its projection onto these subspaces. The accessible entanglement under the SSR is less than (or equal to) that available in the absence of the SSR. An ancilla can be used as a reference system to increase the amount of accessible entanglement. We examine the relationship between local particle number uncertainty and the accessible entanglement and consider the optimal reference states for recovering entanglement from certain systems. In particular we derive the optimal ancilla state for extracting entanglement for a single shared particle and make steps towards the optimum for general systems.
Superselection rules severly constrain the operations which can be implemented on a distributed quantum system. While the restriction to local operations and classical communication gives rise to entanglement as a nonlocal resource, particle number conservation additionally confines the possible operations and should give rise to a new resource. In [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 087904 (2004), quant-ph/0310124] we showed that this resource can be quantified by a single additional number, the superselection induced variance (SiV) without changing the concept of entanglement. In this paper, we give the r…
Bipartite entanglement may be reduced if there are restrictions on allowed local operations. We introduce the concept of a generalized superselection rule (SSR) to describe such restrictions, and quantify the entanglement constrained by it. We show that ensemble quantum information processing, where elements in the ensemble are not individually addressable, is subject to the SSR associated with the symmetric group (the group of permutations of elements). We prove that even for an ensemble comprising many pairs of qubits, each pair described by a pure Bell state, the entanglement per element co…
Superselection rules (SSRs) limit the mechanical and quantum processing resources represented by quantum states. However SSRs can be violated using reference systems to break the underlying symmetry. We show that there is a duality between the ability of a system to do mechanical work and to act as a reference system. Further, for a bipartite system in a globally symmetric pure state, we find a triality between the system's ability to do local mechanical work, its ability to do ``logical work'' due to its accessible entanglement, and its ability to act as a shared reference system.
We discuss the possibility of observing quantum nonlocality using the so-called mode entanglement, analyzing the differences between different types of particles in this context. We first discuss the role of coherent states in such experiments, and we comment on the existence of coherent states in nature. The discussion of coherent states naturally raises questions about the role of particle statistics in this problem. Although the Pauli exclusion principle precludes coherent states with a large number of fermionic particles, we find that a large number of fermionic coherent states, each conta…
Superselection rules severely alter the possible operations that can be implemented on a distributed quantum system. Whereas the restriction to local operations imposed by a bipartite setting gives rise to the notion of entanglement as a nonlocal resource, the superselection rule associated with particle number conservation leads to a new resource, the \emph{superselection induced variance} of local particle number. We show that, in the case of pure quantum states, one can quantify the nonlocal properties by only two additive measures, and that all states with the same measures can be asymptot…
We show that the computational model based on local Fermionic modes in place of qubits does not satisfy local tomography and monogamy of entanglement, and has mixed states with maximal entanglement of formation. These features directly follow from the parity conservation corresponding to the parity superselection rule. We generalize quantum superselection rules to general probabilistic theories as sets of linear constraints on the convex set of states. We then provide a link between the cardinality of the superselection rule and the degree of holism of the resulting theory.
Entanglement is a resource central to quantum information (QI). In particular, entanglement shared between two distant parties allows them to do certain tasks that would otherwise be impossible. In this context, we study the effect on the available entanglement of physical restrictions on the local operations that can be performed by the two parties. We enforce these physical restrictions by generalized superselection rules (SSRs), which we define to be associated with a given group of physical transformations. Specifically the generalized SSR is that the local operations must be covariant wit…
Proposals for Bell inequality tests on systems restricted by superselection rules often require operations that are difficult to implement in practice. In this paper, we derive a new Bell inequality, where pairs of states are used to by-pass the superselection rule. In particular, we focus on mode entanglement of an arbitrary number of massive particles and show that our Bell inequality detects the entanglement in the pair when other inequalities fail. However, as the number of particles in the system increases, the violation of our Bell inequality decreases due to the restriction in the measu…
This paper concentrates on a particular example of a constraint imposed by superselection rules (SSRs): that which applies when the parties (Alice and Bob) cannot distinguish among certain quantum objects they have. This arises naturally in the context of ensemble quantum information processing such as in liquid NMR. We discuss how a SSR for the symmetric group can be applied, and show how the extractable entanglement can be calculated analytically in certain cases, with a maximum bipartite entanglement in an ensemble of N Bell-state pairs scaling as log(N) as N goes to infinity . We discuss t…
In this paper we show that the energy eigenstates of supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM) with non definite "fermion" number are entangled states. They are "physical states" of the model provided that observables with odd number of spin variables are allowed in the theory like it happens in the Jaynes-Cummings model. Those states generalize the so called "spin spring" states of the Jaynes-Cummings model which have played an important role in the study of entanglement.
Particle number conservation in fermionic systems restricts the allowed local operations on bi-partite systems. We show how this restriction is related to measurement entropy of particle fluctuations and compute it for several regimes of practical relevance. The accessible entanglement entropy restricted by particle number conservation is equal, to leading order, to the full entanglement entropy. The correction is bounded by the log of the variance of particle number fluctuations. The results are applied to generic Fermi systems in dimension d>1 as well as to several critical systems in d=1.
We show that appropriate superpositions of motional states are a reference frame resource that enables breaking of time -reversal superselection so that two parties lacking knowledge about the other's direction of time can still communicate. We identify the time-reversal reference frame resource states and determine the corresponding frameness monotone, which connects time-reversal frameness to entanglement. In contradistinction to other studies of reference frame quantum resources, this is the first analysis that involves an antiunitary rather than unitary representation.
Natural particle-number entanglement resides between spatial modes in coherent ultra-cold atomic gases. However, operations on the modes are restricted by a superselection rule that forbids coherent superpositions of different particle numbers. This seemingly prevents mode entanglement being used as a resource for quantum communication. In this paper, we demonstrate that mode entanglement of a single massive particle can be used for dense coding and quantum teleportation despite the superselection rule. In particular, we provide schemes where the dense coding linear photonic channel capacity i…
We show that the classification of bi-partite pure entangled states when local quantum operations are restricted yields a structure that is analogous in many respects to that of mixed-state entanglement. Specifically, we develop this analogy by restricting operations through local superselection rules, and show that such exotic phenomena as bound entanglement and activation arise using pure states in this setting. This analogy aids in resolving several conceptual puzzles in the study of entanglement under restricted operations. In particular, we demonstrate that several types of quantum optica…
Quantum teleportation is considered a basic primitive in many quantum information processing tasks and has been experimentally confirmed in various photonic and matter-based setups. Here, we consider teleportation of quantum information encoded in modes of a fermionic field. In fermionic systems, superselection rules lead to a more differentiated picture of entanglement and teleportation. In particular, one is forced to distinguish between single-mode entanglement swapping, and qubit teleportation with or without authentication via Bell inequality violation, as we discuss here in detail. We fo…
The entanglement between two bosons or fermions can be accessed if there exists an auxiliary degree of freedom which can be used to label and effectively distinguish the two particles. For some types of entanglement between two indistinguishable particles one can observe duality, i.e., if the entanglement is present in the Hilbert space H and an auxiliary Hilbert space H' is used to label the particles, then if we used H as a label the entanglement would be present in H'. For distinguishable particles this effect does not occur because of superselection rules which prevent superpositions of di…
In [N. Friis, New J. Phys. 18, 033014 (2016)] the non-relativistic description of fermions is considered and in particular the role of the parity superselection rule in relation to the characterization of entanglement. An argument based on the spin-statistics connection is presented as a physical motivation for the parity superselection rule. Since the spin statistics connection was derived in the context of relativistic quantum mechanics it is argued that the inclusion of the parity superselection rule is motivated by Lorentz invariance. Based on this it is further argued that fermionic Quant…
Recently, there has been much interest in a new kind of ``unspeakable'' quantum information that stands to regular quantum information in the same way that a direction in space or a moment in time stands to a classical bit string: the former can only be encoded using particular degrees of freedom while the latter are indifferent to the physical nature of the information carriers. The problem of correlating distant reference frames, of which aligning Cartesian axes and synchronizing clocks are important instances, is an example of a task that requires the exchange of unspeakable information and…
Restrictions on quantum operations give rise to resource theories. Total lack of a shared reference frame for transformations associated with a group G between two parties is equivalent to having, in effect, an invariant channel between the parties and a corresponding superselection rule. The resource associated with the absence of the reference frame is known as "frameness" or "asymmetry." We show that any entanglement monotone for pure bipartite states can be adapted as a pure-state frameness monotone for phase-invariant channels [equivalently U(1) superselection rules] and extended to the c…
We develop a theory of gapped domain wall between topologically ordered systems in two spatial dimensions. We find a new type of superselection sector -- referred to as the parton sector -- that subdivides the known superselection sectors localized on gapped domain walls. Moreover, we introduce and study the properties of composite superselection sectors that are made out of the parton sectors. We explain a systematic method to define these sectors, their fusion spaces, and their fusion rules, by deriving nontrivial identities relating their quantum dimensions and fusion multiplicities. We pro…
We show that any quantum information theory based on anticommuting operators must be supplemented by a superselection rule deeply rooted in relativity to establish a reasonable notion of entanglement. While quantum information may be encoded in the fermionic Fock space, the unrestricted theory has a peculiar feature: The marginals of bipartite pure states need not have identical entropies, which leads to an ambiguous definition of entanglement. We solve this problem, by proving that it is removed by relativity, i.e., by the parity superselection rule that arises from Lorentz invariance via the…
While single boson entanglement is known to be equivalent to standard non-identical particle entanglement, the use of fermionic entanglement is constrained by a parity superselection rule. Nevertheless we show that within the framework of second quantization, where local modes play the role of qubits, the analogy with ordinary entanglement holds: two entangled spinless fermion modes can be used to teleport a single local fermion mode and to perform standard dense coding. Entanglement concentration and dilution are possible for fermions. We clarify the meaning of our results by discussing the c…
Mode entanglement exists naturally between regions of space in ultra-cold atomic gases. It has, however, been debated whether this type of entanglement is useful for quantum protocols. This is due to a particle number superselection rule that restricts the operations that can be performed on the modes. In this paper, we show how to exploit the mode entanglement of just a single particle for the teleportation of an unknown quantum state of a spatial mode. We detail how to overcome the superselection rule to create any initial quantum state and how to perform Bell state analysis on two of the mo…
A new type of complementary relation is found between locally accessible information and final average entanglement for given ensemble. It is also shown that in some well known distillation protocol, this complementary relation is optimally satisfied. We discuss the interesting trade-off between locally accessible information and distillable entanglement for some states.
We describe an efficient theoretical criterion suitable for the evaluation of the tripartite entanglement of any mixed three-boson or -fermion state, based on the notion of the entanglement of particles for bipartite systems of identical particles. Our approach allows one to quantify the accessible amount of quantum correlations in the systems without any violation of the local particle number superselection rule. A generalization of the tripartite negativity is here applied to some correlated systems including the continuous-time quantum walks of identical particles (both for bosons and fermi…
Entanglement is the resource to overcome the natural limitations of spatially separated parties restricted to Local Operations assisted by Classical Communications (LOCC). Recently two new classes of operational entanglement measures, the source and the accessible entanglement, for arbitrary multipartite states have been introduced. Whereas the source entanglement measures from how many states the state of interest can be obtained via LOCC, the accessible entanglement measures how many states can be reached via LOCC from the state at hand. We consider here pure bipartite as well as multipartit…
We study the ground-state entanglement of gapped domain walls between topologically ordered systems in two spatial dimensions. We derive a universal correction to the ground-state entanglement entropy, which is equal to the logarithm of the total quantum dimension of a set of superselection sectors localized on the domain wall. This expression is derived from the recently proposed entanglement bootstrap method.
Experiments showing the violation of Bell inequalities have formed our belief that the world at its smallest is genuinely non-local. While many non-locality experiments use the first quantised picture, the physics of fields of indistinguishable particles, such as bosonic gases, is captured most conveniently by second quantisation. This implies the possibility of non-local correlations, such as entanglement, between modes of the field. In this paper we propose an experimental scheme that tests the theoretically predicted entanglement between modes in space occupied by massive bosons. Moreover, …
The split property of a pure state for a certain cut of a quantum spin system can be understood as the entanglement between the two subsystems being weak. From this point of view, we may say that if it is not possible to transform a state $ω$ via sufficiently local automorphisms (in a sense that we will make precise) into a state satisfying the split property, then the state $ω$ has a long-range entanglement. It is well known that in 1D, gapped ground states have the split property with respect to cutting the system into left and right half-chains. In 2D, however, the split property fails to h…

Motivated by the increasing ability of experimentalists to perform detector tomography, we consider how to incorporate the imperfections and restrictions of available measurements directly into the quantification of entanglement. Exploiting the idea that the recently introduced semiquantum nonlocal games as the gauge of the amount of entanglement in a state, we define an effective entanglement functional giving us effective entanglement when the measurement operators one has at their disposal are restricted by either fundamental considerations, such as superselection rules, or practical inabil…
We consider an extended Bose-Hubbard model that includes pair-correlated tunneling. We demonstrate that a minimal four-mode implementation of this model exhibits a pair-correlated regime in addition to Mott insulator and superfluid regimes. We propose a low complexity variational subspace for the ground state of the system in the pair-correlated regime, which we find to be numerically exact in pure pair-tunneling limit. Additionally, we propose a parameter-free high fidelity model wave function that qualitatively captures the features of the ground state in the pair-correlated regime. Although…
We present a multipartite entanglement measure for $N$-qudit pure states, using the norm of the correlation tensor which occurs in the Bloch representation of the state. We compute this measure for important class of $N$-qutrit pure states, namely general GHZ states. We prove that this measure possesses almost all the properties expected of a good entanglement measure, including monotonicity. Finally, we extend this measure to $N$-qudit mixed states via convex roof construction and establish its various properties, including its monotonicity.
Verification of entanglement is an important tool to characterize sources and devices for use in quantum computing and communication applications. In a vast majority of experiments entanglement witnesses (EW) are used in order to prove the presence of entanglement in a quantum state. EWs can be constructed from available measurement results and do not require a reconstruction of the whole density matrix (full tomography), which is especially valuable for high-dimensional systems. We provide a method to construct {\it accessible nonlinear EWs}, which incorporate two important properties. First,…
Quantum interface links stationary qubits in quantum memory with flying photonic qubits in optical transmission channels and constitutes a critical element for future quantum internet. Entanglement of quantum interfaces is a key step for realization of quantum networks. Through heralded detection of photon interference, here we generate multipartite entanglement between 25 (or 9) individually addressable quantum interfaces in a multiplexed atomic quantum memory array and confirm genuine 22 (or 9) partite entanglement, respectively. Experimental entanglement of a record-high number of quantum i…
Experimentally quantifying entanglement and coherence are extremely important for quantum resource theory. However, because the quantum state tomography requires exponentially growing measurements with the number of qubits, it is hard to quantify entanglement and coherence based on the full information of the experimentally realized multipartite states. Fortunately, other methods have been found to directly measure the fidelity of experimental states without quantum state tomography. Here we present a fidelity-based method to derive experimentally accessible lower bounds for measures of genuin…
With progress towards more compact quantum computing architectures, fundamental questions regarding the entanglement of indistinguishable particles need to be addressed. In a solid state device, this quest is naturally connected to the quantum correlations of electrons. Here, we investigate the entanglement between electrons, focusing on the entanglement of modes, the entanglement of particles and the effect of particle-number superselection rules. We elucidate the formation of mode and particle entanglement in strongly correlated materials and show that both represent important resources in q…
We present a multipartite entanglement measure for $N$-qubit pure states, using the norm of the correlation tensor which occurs in the Bloch representation of the state. We compute this measure for several important classes of $N$-qubit pure states such as GHZ states, W states and their superpositions. We compute this measure for interesting applications like one dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We use this measure to follow the entanglement dynamics of Grover's algorithm. We prove that this measure possesses almost all the properties expected of a good entanglement measure, including m…
For indistinguishable itinerant particles subject to a superselection rule fixing their total number, a portion of the entanglement entropy under a spatial bipartition of the ground state is due to particle fluctuations between subsystems and thus is inaccessible as a resource for quantum information processing. We quantify the remaining operationally accessible entanglement in a model of interacting spinless fermions on a one dimensional lattice via exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group. We find that the accessible entanglement exactly vanishes at the first order …
The description of the complex separability structure of quantum states in terms of partially ordered sets has been recently put forward. In this work, we address the question of how to efficiently determine these structures for unknown states. We propose an experimentally accessible and scalable iterative methodology that identifies, on solid statistical grounds, sufficient conditions for non-separability with respect to certain partitions. In addition, we propose an algorithm to determine the minimal partitions (those that do not admit further splitting) consistent with the experimental obse…
Topological order, reflected in long range patterns of entanglement, is quantified by the topological entanglement entropy (TEE) $γ$. We show that for gapped quantum spin liquids (QSL) it is possible to extract $γ$ using two-spin local correlators. We demonstrate our method for the gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Kitaev spin liquid on a honeycomb lattice with anisotropic interactions. We show that the $γ= \log 2$ for $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological order can be simply extracted from local two-spin correlators across two different bonds, with an accuracy comparable or higher than the Kitaev-Preskill construct…
We introduce an arbitrary number of accessible modes when analyzing bipartite entanglement degradation due to Unruh effect between two partners Alice and Rob. Under the single mode approximation (SMA) a fermion field only had a few accessible levels due to Pauli exclusion principle, conversely to bosonic fields which had an infinite number of excitable levels. This was argued to justify entanglement survival in the fermionic case in the SMA infinite acceleration limit. Here we relax SMA. Hence, an infinite number of modes are excited as the observer Rob accelerates, even for a fermion field. W…
We use an entanglement measure that respects the superselection of particle number to study the non-local properties of symmetry-protected topological edge states. Considering half-filled M-leg Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) ladders as an example, we show that the topological properties and the operational entanglement extractable from the boundaries are intimately connected. Topological phases with at least two filled edge states have the potential to realize genuine, non-bipartite, many-body entanglement which can be transferred to a quantum register. The entanglement is extractable when the fil…
The effect of Hawking radiation on the redistribution of the entanglement and mutual information in the Schwarzschild spacetime is investigated. Our analysis shows that the physically accessible correlations degrade while the unaccessible correlations increase as the Hawking temperature increases because the initial correlations described by inertial observers are redistributed between all the bipartite modes. It is interesting to note that, in the limit case that the temperature tends to infinity, the accessible mutual information equals to just half of its initial value, and the unaccessible…
We propose a measure of interaction-induced ground state entanglement in many-fermion systems that is experimentally accessible. It is formulated in terms of cross-correlations of currents through resonant fermion levels weakly coupled to the probed system. The proposed entanglement measure vanishes in the absence of many-body interactions and it is related to measures of occupation number entanglement. We evaluate it for two examples of interacting electronic nanostructures.
We study the entanglement structure of lattice gauge theories from the local operational point of view, and, similar to Soni and Trivedi (arXiv:1510.07455), we show that the usual entanglement entropy for a spatial bipartition can be written as the sum of an undistillable gauge part and of another part corresponding to the LOCC distillable entanglement, which is obtained by depolarizing the local superselection sectors. We demonstrate that the distillable entanglement is zero for pure abelian gauge theories in the weak coupling limit, while it is in general nonzero for the nonabelian case. We …
