We construct a class of discontinuous superprocesses with dependent spatial motion and general branching mechanism. The process arises as the weak limit of critical interacting-branching particle systems where the spatial motions of the particles are not independent. The main work is to solve the martingale problem. When we turn to the uniqueness of the process, we generalize the localization method introduced by [D.W. Stroock, Diffusion processes associated with Levy generators, Z. Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie und Verw. Gebiete, 32(1975) 209--244] to the measure-valued context. As for existence, we use particle system approximation and a perturbation method. This work generalizes the model introduced in [D.A. Dawson, Z. Li, H. Wang, Superprocesses with dependent spatial motion and general branching densities, Electron. J. Probab. 6(2001), no.25, 33 pp. (electronic)] where quadratic branching mechanism was considered. We also investigate some properties of the process.
In this paper we establish a weak and a strong law of large numbers for supercritical superprocesses with general non-local branching mechanisms. Our results complement earlier results obtained for superprocesses with only local branching. Several interesting examples are developed, including multitype continuous-state branching processes, multitype superdiffusions and superprocesses with discontinuous spatial motions and non-decomposable branching mechanisms.
A superprocess with dependent spatial motion and interactive immigration is constructed as the pathwise unique solution of a stochastic integral equation carried by a stochastic flow and driven by Poisson processes of one-dimensional excursions.
A superprocess with coalescing spatial motion is constructed in terms of one-dimensional excursions. Based on this construction, it is proved that the superprocess is purely atomic and arises as scaling limit of a special form of the superprocess with dependent spatial motion studied in Dawson {\it et al.} (2001) and Wang (1997, 1998).
A non-critical branching immigration superprocess with dependent spatial motion is constructed and characterized as the solution of a stochastic equation driven by a time-space white noise and an orthogonal martingale measure. A representation of its conditional log-Laplace functionals is established, which gives the uniqueness of the solution and hence its Markov property. Some properties of the superprocess including an ergodic theorem are also obtained.
We construct a class of superprocesses by taking the high density limit of a sequence of interacting-branching particle systems. The spatial motion of the superprocess is determined by a system of interacting diffusions, the branching density is given by an arbitrary bounded non-negative Borel function, and the superprocess is characterized by a martingale problem as a diffusion process with state space $M(\IR)$, improving and extending considerably the construction of Wang (1997, 1998). It is then proved in a special case that a suitable rescaled process of the superprocess converges to the u…
We prove a convergence theorem for a sequence of super-Brownian motions moving among hard Poissonian obstacles, when the intensity of the obstacles grows to infinity but their diameters shrink to zero in an appropriate manner. The superprocesses are shown to converge in probability for the law $\mathbf{P}$ of the obstacles, and $\mathbf{P}$-almost surely for a subsequence, towards a superprocess with underlying spatial motion given by Brownian motion and (inhomogeneous) branching mechanism $ψ(u,x)$ of the form $ψ(u,x)= u^2+ κ(x)u$, where $κ(x)$ depends on the density of the obstacles. This wor…
We extend the class of $(ξ,ψ,K)$-superprocesses known so far by applying a simple transformation induced by a \lq\lq weight function\rq\rq\ for the one-particle motion. These transformed superprocesses may exist under weak conditions on the branching parameters, and their state space automatically extends to a certain space of possibly infinite Radon measures. It turns out that a number of superprocesses which were so far not included in the general theory fall into this class. For instance, we are able to extend the hyperbolic branching catalyst of Fleischmann and Mueller to the case of $β$-b…
In this paper, we establish some functional central limit theorems for a large class of general supercritical superprocesses with spatially dependent branching mechanisms satisfying a second moment condition. In the particular case when the state $E$ is a finite set and the underline motion is an irreducible Markov chain on $E$, our results are superprocess analogs of the functional central limit theorems of \cite{Janson} for supercritical multitype branching processes. The results of this paper are refinements of the central limit theorems in \cite{RSZ3}.
We would like to give an overview of results on regularity, or better to say "irregularity", properties of densities at fixed times of super-Brownian motion with $(1+β)$-stable branching for $β<1$. First, the following dichotomy for the density is shown: it is continuous in the dimension $d=1$ and locally unbounded in all higher dimensions where it exists. Then in $d=1$ we determine pointwise and local Hölder exponents of the density, and calculate the multifractal spectrum corresponding to pointwise Hölder exponents.
The goal of this paper has two-folds. First, we establish skeleton and spine decompositions for superprocesses whose underlying processes are general symmetric Hunt processes. Second, we use these decompositions to obtain weak and strong law of large numbers for supercritical superprocesses where the spatial motion is a symmetric Hunt process on a locally compact metric space $E$ and the branching mechanism takes the form $$ψ_β(x,λ)=-β(x)λ+α(x)λ^{2}+\int_{(0,{\infty})}(e^{-λy}-1+λy)π(x,dy)$$ with $β\in\mathcal{B}_{b}(E)$, $α\in \mathcal{B}^{+}_{b}(E)$ and $π$ being a kernel from $E$ to $(0,{\i…
For $0<α\leq2$, a super-$α$-stable motion $X$ in $\mathsf{R}^d$ with branching of index $1+β\in(1,2)$ is considered. Fix arbitrary $t>0$. If $d<α/β$, a dichotomy for the density function of the measure $X_t$ holds: the density function is locally Hölder continuous if $d=1$ and $α>1+β$ but locally unbounded otherwise. Moreover, in the case of continuity, we determine the optimal local Hölder index.
We consider a critical superprocess $\{X;\mathbf P_μ\}$ with general spatial motion and spatially dependent stable branching mechanism with lowest stable index $γ_0 > 1$. We first show that, under some conditions, $\mathbf P_μ(\|X_t\|\neq 0)$ converges to $0$ as $t\to \infty$ and is regularly varying with index $(γ_0-1)^{-1}$. Then we show that, for a large class of non-negative testing functions $f$, the distribution of $\{X_t(f);\mathbf P_μ(\cdot|\|X_t\|\neq 0)\}$, after appropriate rescaling, converges weakly to a positive random variable $\mathbf z^{(γ_0-1)}$ with Laplace transform $E[e^{-…
Suppose that $X=\{X_t, t\ge 0\}$ is a supercritical superprocess on a locally compact separable metric space $(E, m)$. Suppose that the spatial motion of $X$ is a Hunt process satisfying certain conditions and that the branching mechanism is of the form $$ ψ(x,λ)=-a(x)λ+b(x)λ^2+\int_{(0,+\infty)}(e^{-λy}-1+λy)n(x,dy), \quad x\in E, \quadλ> 0, $$ where $a\in \mathcal{B}_b(E)$, $b\in \mathcal{B}_b^+(E)$ and $n$ is a kernel from $E$ to $(0,\infty)$ satisfying $$ \sup_{x\in E}\int_0^\infty y^2 n(x,dy)<\infty. $$ Put $T_tf(x)=\mathbb{P}_{δ_x}< f,X_t>$. Let $λ_0>0$ be the largest eigenvalue of the g…
Spatial branching processes became increasingly popular in the past decades, not only because of their obvious connection to biology, but also because superprocesses are intimately related to nonlinear partial differential equations. Another hot topic in today's research in probability theory is `random media', including the now classical problems on `Brownian motion among obstacles' and the more recent `random walks in random environment' and `catalytic branching' models. These notes aim to give a gentle introduction into some topics in spatial branching processes and superprocesses in determ…
We study optimal buying and selling strategies in target zone models. In these models the price is modeled by a diffusion process which is reflected at one or more barriers. Such models arise for example when a currency exchange rate is kept above a certain threshold due to central bank intervention. We consider the optimal portfolio liquidation problem for an investor for whom prices are optimal at the barrier and who creates temporary price impact. This problem will be formulated as the minimization of a cost-risk functional over strategies that only trade when the price process is located a…
We construct superprocesses with dependent spatial motion (SDSMs) in Euclidean spaces $R^d$ with $d\ge1$ and show that, even when they start at some unbounded initial positive Radon measure such as Lebesgue measure on $R^d$, their local times exist when $d\le3$. A Tanaka formula of the local time is also derived.
Using a Tanaka representation of the local time for a class of superprocesses with dependent spatial motion, as well as sharp estimates from the theory of uniformly parabolic partial differential equations, the joint Hölder continuity in time and space of said local times is obtained in two and three dimensional Euclidean space.
We consider the stochastic continuity equation perturbed by a fractional Brownian motion and the drift is allowed to be discontinuous. We show that for almost all paths of the fractional Brownian motion there exists a solution to the equation.
We consider two related linear PDE's perturbed by a fractional Brownian motion. We allow the drift to be discontinuous, in which case the corresponding deterministic equation is ill-posed. However, the noise will be shown to have a regularizing effect on the equations in the sense that we can prove existence of solutions for almost all paths of the fractional Brownian motion.
Let $A_t=\sum_{s\le t} F(X_{s-},X_s)$ be a purely discontinuous additive functional of a subordinate Brownian motion $X=(X_t, \mathbb P_x)$. We give a sufficient condition on the non-negative function $F$ that guarantees that finiteness of $A_{\infty}$ implies finiteness of its expectation. This result is then applied to study the relative entropy of $\mathbb P_x$ and the probability measure induced by a purely discontinuous Girsanov transform of the process $X$. We prove these results under the weak global scaling condition on the Laplace exponent of the underlying subordinator.
In a supercritical branching particle system, the trimmed tree consists of those particles which have descendants at all times. We develop this concept in the superprocess setting. For a class of continuous superprocesses with Feller underlying motion on compact spaces, we identify the trimmed tree, which turns out to be a binary splitting particle system with a new underlying motion that is a compensated h-transform of the old one. We show how trimmed trees may be estimated from above by embedded binary branching particle systems.
In this paper we study a stochastic differential equation driven by a fractional Brownian motion with a discontinuous coefficient. We also give an approximation to the solution of the equation. This is a first step to define a fractional version of the skew Brownian motion.
We study a spatial branching model, where the underlying motion is $d$-dimensional ($d\ge1$) Brownian motion and the branching rate is affected by a random collection of reproduction suppressing sets dubbed mild obstacles. The main result of this paper is the quenched law of large numbers for the population for all $d\ge1$. We also show that the branching Brownian motion with mild obstacles spreads less quickly than ordinary branching Brownian motion by giving an upper estimate on its speed. When the underlying motion is an arbitrary diffusion process, we obtain a dichotomy for the quenched lo…
For any starting point in $\mathbb{R}^d$, we identify the stochastic differential equation that is satisfied by distorted Brownian motion with respect to a certain discontinuous Muckenhoupt $A_2$-weight $ψ$. The discontinuities of $ψ$ typically take place on a sequence of level sets of the Euclidean norm $D_k:=\{x\in \mathbb{R}^d\, | \;\|x\|=d_k\}$, $k\in\mathbb{Z}$, where $(d_k)_{k\in\mathbb{Z}}\subset (0,\infty)$ may have accumulation points and each level set $D_k$ plays the role of a permeable membrane.
We consider equidistant approximations of stochastic integrals driven by Hölder continuous Gaussian processes of order $H>\frac12$ with discontinuous integrands involving bounded variation functions. We give exact rate of convergence in the $L^1$-distance and provide examples with different drivers. It turns out that the exact rate of convergence is proportional to $n^{1-2H}$ that is twice better compared to the best known results in the case of discontinuous integrands, and corresponds to the known rate in the case of smooth integrands. The novelty of our approach is that, instead of using mu…
In recent years, an intensive study of strong approximation of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with a drift coefficient that may have discontinuities in space has begun. In many of these results it is assumed that the drift coefficient satisfies piecewise regularity conditions and the diffusion coefficient is Lipschitz continuous and non-degenerate at the discontinuity points of the drift coefficient. For scalar SDEs of that type the best $L_p$-error rate known so far for approximation of the solution at the final time point is $3/4$ in terms of the number of evaluations of the drivin…
We construct a measure-valued branching Markov process associated with a nonlinear boundary value problem, where the boundary condition has a nonlinear pseudo monotone branching mechanism term $-β$, which includes as a limit case $β(u) = - u^{m}$, with $0 < m < 1$. The process is then used in the probabilistic representation of the solution of the parabolic problem associated with a nonlinear Neumann boundary value problem. In this way the classical association of the superprocesses to the Dirichlet boundary value problems also holds for the nonlinear Neumann boundary value problems. It turns …
A pathwise construction of discontinuous Brownian motions on metric graphs is given for every possible set of non-local Feller-Wentzell boundary conditions. This construction is achieved by locally decomposing the metric graphs into star graphs, establishing local solutions on these partial graphs, pasting the solutions together, introducing non-local jumps, and verifying the generator of the resulting process.
It is well known that, starting with finite mass, the super-Brownian motion dies out in finite time. The goal of this article is to show that with some additional work, one can prove finite time die-out for two types of systems of stochastic differential equations on the lattice Z^d. Our first system involves the heat equation on the lattice Z^d, with a nonlinear noise term u(t,x)^gamma dB_x(t), with 1/2 <= gamma < 1. The B_x are independent Brownian motions. When gamma = 1/2, the measure which puts mass u(t,x) at x is a super-random walk and it is well-known that the process becomes extinct i…
In the past decade, an intensive study of strong approximation of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with a drift coefficient that has discontinuities in space has begun. In the majority of these results it is assumed that the drift coefficient satisfies piecewise regularity conditions and that the diffusion coefficient is globally Lipschitz continuous and non-degenerate at the discontinuities of the drift coefficient. Under this type of assumptions the best $L_p$-error rate obtained so far for approximation of scalar SDEs at the final time is $3/4$ in terms of the number of evaluations …
We investigate the genealogical structure of general critical or subcritical continuous-state branching processes. Analogously to the coding of a discrete tree by its contour function, this genealogical structure is coded by a real-valued stochastic process called the height process, which is itself constructed as a local time functional of a Levy process with no negative jumps. We present a detailed study of the height process and of an associated measure-valued process called the exploration process, which plays a key role in most applications. Under suitable assumptions, we prove that whene…
We consider the problem of minimizing the entropy of a law with respect to the law of a reference branching Brownian motion under density constraints at an initial and final time. We call this problem the branching Schrödinger problem by analogy with the Schrödinger problem, where the reference process is a Brownian motion. Whereas the Schrödinger problem is related to regularized (a.k.a. entropic) optimal transport, we investigate here the link of the branching Schrödinger problem with regularized unbalanced optimal transport. This link is shown at two levels. First, relying on duality argume…
The logarithmic correction for the order of the maximum for two-speed branching Brownian motion changes discontinuously when approaching slopes $σ_1^2=σ_2^2=1$ which corresponds to standard branching Brownian motion. In this article we study this transition more closely by choosing $σ_1^2=1\pm t^{-α}$ and $σ_2^2=1\pm t^{-α}$. We show that the logarithmic correction for the order of the maximum now smoothly interpolates between the correction in the iid case $\frac{1}{2\sqrt 2}\ln(t),\;\frac{3}{2\sqrt 2}\ln(t)$ and $\frac{6}{2\sqrt 2}\ln(t)$ when $0<α<\frac{1}{2}$. This is due to the localisati…
There are a number of situations in which rescaled interacting particle systems have been shown to converge to a reaction diffusion equation (RDE) with a bistable reaction term. These RDEs have traveling wave solutions. When the speed of the wave is nonzero, block constructions have been used to prove the existence or nonexistence of nontrivial stationary distributions. Here, we follow the approach in a paper by Etheridge, Freeman, and Pennington to show that in a wide variety of examples when the RDE limit has a bistable reaction term and traveling waves have speed 0, one can run time faster …

The Levy Walk is the process with continuous sample paths which arises from consecutive linear motions of i.i.d. lengths with i.i.d. directions. Assuming speed 1 and motions in the domain of beta-stable attraction, we prove functional limit theorems and derive governing pseudo-differential equations for the law of the walker's position. Both Levy Walk and its limit process are continuous and ballistic in the case beta in (0,1). In the case beta in (1,2), the scaling limit of the process is beta-stable and hence discontinuous. This case exhibits an interesting situation in which scaling exponen…
We study the asymptotic behavior of estimators of a two-valued, discontinuous diffusion coefficient in a Stochastic Differential Equation, called an Oscillating Brownian Motion. Using the relation of the latter process with the Skew Brownian Motion, we propose two natural consistent estimators, which are variants of the integrated volatility estimator and take the occupation times into account. We show the stable convergence of the renormalized errors' estimations toward some Gaussian mixture, possibly corrected by a term that depends on the local time. These limits stem from the lack of ergod…
