We illustrate how the midpoint and iterative cone (with progressive removal) algorithms fail to satisfy the fundamental requirements of infrared and collinear safety, causing divergences in the perturbative expansion. We introduce SISCone and the anti-kt algorithms as respective replacements that do not have those failures without any cost at the experimental level.
The SISCone jet algorithm is a seedless infrared-safe cone jet algorithm. There exists an implementation which is highly optimised for a large number of final state particles. However, in fixed-order perturbative calculations with a small number of final state particles, it turns out that the computer time needed for the jet clustering of this implementation is comparable to the computer time of the matrix elements. This article reports on an implementation of the SISCone algorithm optimised for low particle multiplicities.
The rest frame subjet algorithm is introduced to define the subjets for the SISCone jet. Using it, an IR and collinear safe jet shape observable N-subjettiness, $τ_N^{j}$, is defined to discriminate the fat jet from a highly boosted color singlet particle decaying to N partons and the QCD jet. Using rest frame subjets and $τ_2^{j}$ on dijets from highly boosted $\it H / W / Z$ bosons through $pp \to \it H W$, $\it H Z$, we found that statistical significance of the signal is about $2 σ$ at the LHC with $\mathcal{L} \sim 30 \mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ at $14 \tev$.
This article gives results on several jet algorithms in electron-positron annihilation: Considered are the exclusive sequential recombination algorithms Durham, Geneva, Jade-E0 and Cambridge, which are typically used in electron-positron annihilation. In addition also inclusive jet algorithms are studied. Results are provided for the inclusive sequential recombination algorithms Durham, Aachen and anti-kt, as well as the infrared-safe cone algorithm SISCone. The results are obtained in perturbative QCD and are NNNLO for the two-jet rates, NNLO for the three-jet rates, NLO for the four-jet rate…
The k_t and Cambridge/Aachen inclusive jet finding algorithms for hadron-hadron collisions can be seen as belonging to a broader class of sequential recombination jet algorithms, parametrised by the power of the energy scale in the distance measure. We examine some properties of a new member of this class, for which the power is negative. This ``anti-k_t'' algorithm essentially behaves like an idealised cone algorithm, in that jets with only soft fragmentation are conical, active and passive areas are equal, the area anomalous dimensions are zero, the non-global logarithms are those of a rigid…
Current cone jet algorithms, widely used at hadron colliders, take event particles as seeds in an iterative search for stable cones. A longstanding infrared (IR) unsafety issue in such algorithms is often assumed to be solvable by adding extra `midpoint' seeds, but actually is just postponed to one order higher in the coupling. A proper solution is to switch to an exact seedless cone algorithm, one that provably identifies all stable cones. The only existing approach takes N 2^N time to find jets among N particles, making it unusable at hadron level. This can be reduced to N^2 ln(N) time, lead…
Identifying jets formed in high-energy particle collisions requires solving optimization problems over potentially large numbers of final-state particles. In this work, we consider the possibility of using quantum computers to speed up jet clustering algorithms. Focusing on the case of electron-positron collisions, we consider a well-known event shape called thrust whose optimum corresponds to the most jet-like separating plane among a set of particles, thereby defining two hemisphere jets. We show how to formulate thrust both as a quantum annealing problem and as a Grover search problem. A ke…
A brief summary of the current status of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to top quark pair production and the associated production of top anti-top with jet(s) in different configurations, i.e. with one jet, two jets and another top anti-top pair, is presented.
We discuss the production of top--anti-top quark pairs in association with a hard jet at the Tevatron and at the LHC and we report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to this process. Numerical results for the top--anti-top+jet cross section and the forward--backward charge asymmetry are presented. The corrections stabilize the leading-order prediction for the cross section. In contrast, the charge asymmetry receives large corrections. The dependence of the cross section as well as the asymmetry on the minimum transverse momenta used to define the additional jet is …
We discuss the leptoquark interpretation of the anomalous HERA positron-jet events in the context of the YFS exponentiated Monte Carlo event generator treatment of the attendant multiple photon radiative effects for both the would-be signal and the SM background, wherein finite-$p_T$ photon effects are properly taken into account and wherein infrared singularities are cancelled to all orders in $α$. We show that H1 and ZEUS data are consistent with such an interpretation for a leptoquark coupling $\lesssim 0.3g_W$, mass $\sim 200$ GeV, and width $\lesssim 2$GeV. Possible future tests are propo…
The $W$-pair production in association with a massive (anti)bottom jet is not only an important background to a number of interesting processes, such as the single top production associated with a W boson, but also a potential background to new physics searches. We present the calculations of the total and differential cross sections for the $W^+W^-+ b(\bar{b})$ jet productions at the LHC up to the QCD next-to-leading order (NLO). Our results by adopting the QCD NLO contribution collection scheme-I show that the K factors can be 1.66 and 1.21 with the inclusive and exclusive two-jet event sele…
We present the calculation of Next-to-Leading-Order Quantum Chromo Dynamics corrections for the production of a W or Z weak boson associated with a bottom anti-bottom quark pair at hadron colliders (p anti-p, pp to W/Z b anti-b), including the effects of a non-zero bottom-quark mass. We find a considerable reduction of the renormalization and factorization scale dependence of our results with respect to Leading-Order calculations. In particular, we study the impact of the corrections on the total cross section and invariant mass distributions of the bottom anti-bottom quark pair at the Fermila…
We derive generating functions, valid to next-to-double logarithmic accuracy, for QCD jet rates according to the inclusive forms of the kt, Cambridge/Aachen and anti-kt algorithms, which are equivalent at this level of accuracy. We compare the analytical results with jet rates and average jet multiplicities from the SHERPA event generator, and study the transition between Poisson-like and staircase-like behaviour of jet ratios.
We examine the problem of jet reconstruction at heavy-ion colliders using jet-area-based background subtraction tools as provided by FastJet. We use Monte Carlo simulations with and without quenching to study the performance of several jet algorithms, including the option of filtering, under conditions corresponding to RHIC and LHC collisions. We find that most standard algorithms perform well, though the anti-kt and filtered Cambridge/Aachen algorithms have clear advantages in terms of the reconstructed transverse-momentum offset and dispersion.

We study the apparent discrepancy between the standard PQCD predictions for the meson and baryon ratios and multiplicities at moderate high $p_{T} > 2$ GeV and recent experimental measurements in $Au+Au$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}_{NN}=130$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We show that the differences, most pronounced in central collisions, can be explained by a strong non-perturbative baryon Junction component, which dominates the currently accessible experimental $p_{T}$ window and the non-abelian energy loss of fast partons propagating through hot and dense medium. The recent…
We define jet transition values for the anti-$k_{\bot}$ algorithm for both hadron and $e^+e^-$ colliders. We show how these transition values can be computed and how they can be used to improve the performance of clusterization when jet resolution parameters are varied over a larger set of values. Finally we present a simple performance test to illustrate the behavior of the new method compared to the original one.
We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation for the single-inclusive production of collimated jets at hadron colliders, when the jet is defined by maximizing a suitable jet function that depends on the momenta of final-state particles in the event. A jet algorithm of this type was initially proposed by Georgi and subsequently further developed into the class of "$J_{E_T}$ algorithms". Our calculation establishes the infrared safety of the algorithms at this perturbative order. We derive analytical results for the relevant partonic cross sections. We discuss similarities and differences …
Jets constructed via clustering algorithms (e.g., anti-$k_T$, soft-drop) have been proposed for many precision measurements, such as the strong coupling $α_s$ and the nucleon intrinsic dynamics. However, the theoretical accuracy is affected by missing QCD corrections at higher orders for the jet functions in the associated factorization theorems. Their calculation is complicated by the jet clustering procedure. In this work, we propose a method to evaluate jet functions at higher orders in QCD. The calculation involves the phase space sector decomposition with suitable soft subtractions. As a …
We present the first anti-k$_{T}$ jet spectrum and substructure measurements using the archived ALEPH $e^+e^-$ data taken in 1994 at a center of mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 91.2$ GeV. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-k$_{T}$ algorithm with a resolution parameter of 0.4. It is the cleanest test of jets and QCD without the complication of hadronic initial states. The fixed center-of-mass energy also allows the first direct test of pQCD calculation. We present both the inclusive jet energy spectrum and the leading dijet energy spectra, together with a number of substructure observables. They a…
We introduce a new framework for jet definitions called p-jets that matches the computational speed of the currently used anti-k_T jet algorithm, but avoids combining much of the energy from background pileup events with signal jets. As a first illustration of the p-jet framework, we compare the effectiveness of a p-jet algorithm to the anti-k_T algorithm in reconstructing low energy jets from resonant Z boson production and 50 pileup events.
New particles beyond the Standard Model might be produced with a very high boost, for instance if they result from the decay of a heavier particle. If the former decay hadronically, then their signature is a single massive fat jet which is difficult to separate from QCD backgrounds. Jet substructure and machine learning techniques allow for the discrimination of many specific boosted objects from QCD, but the scope of possibilities is very large, and a suite of dedicated taggers may not be able to cover every possibility - in addition to making experimental searches cumbersome. In this paper w…
We show that far zone Mach and diffusion wake ``holograms'' produced by supersonic strings in anti--de Sitter space/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence do not lead to observable conical angular correlations in the strict $N_c\to\infty$ supergravity limit if Cooper-Frye hadronization is assumed. However, a special {\em nonequilibrium} ``neck'' zone near the jet is shown to produce an apparent sonic boom azimuthal angle distribution that is roughly independent of the heavy quark's velocity. Our results indicate that a measurement of the dependence of the away-side correlations on the…
In this article, we present a method to calculate a posteriori event weights at next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD accuracy for a given jet event defined by the (anti-)$k_t$ algorithm relying on the conventional $2\to 1$ recombination. This is an important extension compared to existing Monte-Carlo tools which generate jet events together with the corresponding weight but do not allow one to calculate the weight for a given event. The method can be used to generate unweighted events distributed according to the fixed-order NLO cross section. In addition, the method allows one to calculate NLO acc…

We leverage representation learning and the inductive bias in neural-net-based Standard Model jet classification tasks, to detect non-QCD signal jets. In establishing the framework for classification-based anomaly detection in jet physics, we demonstrate that, with a \emph{well-calibrated} and \emph{powerful enough feature extractor}, a well-trained \emph{mass-decorrelated} supervised Standard Model neural jet classifier can serve as a strong generic anti-QCD jet tagger for effectively reducing the QCD background. Imposing \emph{data-augmented} mass-invariance (and thus decoupling the dominant…
We study anomalous high-$p_T$ baryon production in $AA$-collisions due to formation of the two parton collinear $gq$ system in the anti-sextet color state for quark jets and $gg$ system in the decuplet/anti-decuplet color states for gluon jets. Fragmentation of these states, which are absent for $NN$-collisions, after escaping from the quark-gluon plasma leads to baryon production. Our qualitative estimates show that this mechanism can be potentially important at RHIC and LHC energies.
We introduce a new jet-finding algorithm for a hadron collider based on maximizing a J_{E_T} function for all possible combinations of particles in an event. This function prefers a larger value of the jet transverse energy and a smaller value of the jet mass. The jet shape is proved to be a circular cone in Cartesian coordinates with the geometric center shifted from the jet momentum toward the central region. The jet cone size shrinks for a more forward jet. We have implemented our J_{E_T} algorithm with a reasonable running time scaling as N n^3, where "N" is the total number of particles a…
We consider b-jet hadroproduction in the quasi-multi-Regge-kinematics approach based on the hypothesis of gluon and quark Reggeization in t-channel exchanges at high energies. The preliminary data on inclusive b-jet and b anti-b-dijet production taken by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron are well described without adjusting parameters. We find the main contribution to inclusive b-jet production to be the scattering of a Reggeized gluon and a Reggeized b-quark to a b quark, which is described by the effective Reggeon-Reggeon-quark vertex. The main contribution to b anti-b-pair prod…
We present a new approach to jet definition alternative to clustering methods, such as the anti-$k_T$ scheme, that exploit kinematic data directly. Instead the new method uses kinematic information to represent the particles in a multidimensional space, as in spectral clustering. After confirming its Infra-Red (IR) safety, we compare its performance in analysing $gg \rightarrow H_{125~\rm GeV} \rightarrow H_{40~\rm GeV}H_{40~\rm GeV} \rightarrow b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$, $gg \rightarrow H_{500~\rm GeV} \rightarrow H_{125~\rm GeV}H_{125~\rm GeV} \rightarrow b\bar{b}b\bar{b}$ and $gg, q\bar{q} \rightar…

A method of top tagging is introduced. Using the anti-kt algorithm to define jets, events with nj = 2 fat jets of cone size R = 1.5 are decomposed into R = 0.6 sub-jets and retained if nj (R= 0.6) >= 4 . One pair of sub-jets reconstructs the W-mass and another jet is tagged as a b-jet, as necessary for hadronic or semileptonic events of tt origin. This 'hollow cone' method distinguishes the tt events from the light parton QCD dijet events.
