(abridged) Infrared selection is a potentially powerful way to identify heavily obscured AGN missed in even the deepest X-ray surveys. Using a 24 micron-selected sample in GOODS-S, we test the reliability and completeness of three infrared AGN selection methods: (1) IRAC color-color selection, (2) IRAC power-law selection, and (3) IR-excess selection; we also evaluate a number of infrared excess approaches. We find that the vast majority of non-power-law IRAC color-selected AGN candidates in GOODS-S have colors consistent with those of star-forming galaxies. Contamination by star-forming galaxies is most prevalent at low 24 micron flux densities (~100 uJy) and high redshifts (z~2), but the fraction of potential contaminants is still high (~50%) at 500 uJy, the highest flux density probed reliably by our survey. AGN candidates selected via a simple, physically-motivated power-law criterion (PLGs), however, appear to be reliable. We confirm that the infrared excess methods successfully identify a number of AGN, but we also find that such samples may be significantly contaminated by star-forming galaxies. Adding only the secure Spitzer-selected PLG, color-selected, IR-excess, and radio/IR-selected AGN candidates to the deepest X-ray-selected AGN samples directly increases the number of known X-ray AGN (84) by 54-77%, and implies an increase to the number of 24 micron-detected AGN of 71-94%. Finally, we show that the fraction of MIR sources dominated by an AGN decreases with decreasing MIR flux density, but only down to f_24 = 300 uJy. Below this limit, the AGN fraction levels out, indicating that a non-negligible fraction (~10%) of faint 24 micron sources (the majority of which are missed in the X-ray) are powered not by star formation, but by the central engine.
A proper analysis of the evolution of sources emitting in the Mid-Infrared is strongly dependent on their broad-band spectral properties (SEDs) at different redshifts and luminosities and on a reliable classification allowing to disentangle AGN from star-formation activity. The diagnostic diagrams based on the optical line ratios are often ambiguous and/or misleading not allowing a proper separation of the galaxy/AGN populations. Thanks to the combination of deep Spitzer and X-rays data a much better census of the hidden AGN activity and dust-obscured star-forming galaxies can be obtained, con…
We present an analysis of the 5-8 micron Spitzer-IRS spectra of a sample of 68 local Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs). Our diagnostic technique allows a clear separation of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) and starburst (SB) components in the observed mid-IR emission, and a simple analytic model provides a quantitative estimate of the AGN/starburst contribution to the bolometric luminosity. We show that AGNs are ~30 times brighter at 6 micron than starbursts with the same bolometric luminosity, so that even faint AGNs can be detected. Star formation events are confirmed as the dominan…
We present early results from the spectroscopic follow-up of a sample of candidate obscured AGN selected in the mid-infrared from the Spitzer First Look Survey. Our selection allows a direct comparison of the numbers of obscured and unobscured AGN at a given luminosity for the first time, and shows that the ratio of obscured to unobscured AGN at infrared luminosities corresponding to low luminosity quasars is ~1:1 at z~0.5. Most of our optically-faint candidate obscured AGN have the high-ionization, narrow-line spectra expected from type-2 AGN. A composite spectrum shows evidence for Balmer ab…
Optically--faint X-ray sources (those with f_X/f_R > 10) constitute about 20% of X-ray sources in deep surveys, and are potentially highly obscured and/or at high redshift. Their faint optical fluxes are generally beyond the reach of spectroscopy. For a sample of 20 optically--faint sources in CDFS, we compile 0.4--24 um photometry, relying heavily on Spitzer. We estimate photometric redshifts for 17 of these 20 sources. We find that these AGN are optically--faint both because they lie at significantly higher redshifts (median z ~ 1.6) than most X-ray--selected AGN, and because their spectra a…
We present the {\it Spitzer} Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) and Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) observations of the elliptical galaxy NGC 315. After removal of the host galaxy's stellar emission, we detected for the first time an infrared-red nucleus in NGC 315. We measured the spectral energy distribution (SED) for this active nucleus with wavelength range covering from radio to X-ray, and obtained the bolometric luminosity of $\rm L_{bol} \approx 1.9 \times 10^{43} ergs s^{-1}$, corresponding to an extremely low Eddington ratio (L/L$_{\rm Edd}$) of 4.97 $\times$ 10$^{-4}$. …
We define a sample of 62 galaxies in the Chandra Deep Field-North whose Spitzer IRAC SEDs exhibit the characteristic power-law emission expected of luminous AGN. We study the multiwavelength properties of this sample, and compare the AGN selected in this way to those selected via other Spitzer color-color criteria. Only 55% of the power-law galaxies are detected in the X-ray catalog at exposures of >0.5 Ms, although a search for faint emission results in the detection of 85% of the power-law galaxies at the > 2.5 sigma detection level. Most of the remaining galaxies are likely to host AGN that…
We present optical spectroscopy of a sample of 77 luminous AGN and quasars selected on the basis of their mid-infrared colors. Our objects are selected from the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey and SWIRE XMM-LSS fields, with a typical 24mu flux density of 5mJy. The median redshift is 0.6, with a range of ~0.05-4. Only 33% (25/77) of these objects are normal type-1 quasars, with no obscuration. 44% (34/77) are type-2 objects, with high-ionization, narrow emission lines, 14% (11/77) are dust-reddened type-1 quasars, showing broad lines but a dust-reddened or unusually weak quasar continuu…
We present mid-infrared observations of AGN in the GOODS fields, performed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. These are the deepest infrared and X-ray fields to date and cover a total area of ~0.1 square degrees. AGN are selected on the basis of their hard (2-8 keV) X-ray emission. The median AGN infrared luminosity is at least 10 times larger than the median for normal galaxies with the same redshift distribution, suggesting that the infrared emission is dominated by the central nucleus. The X-ray to infrared luminosity ratios of GOODS AGN, most of which are at 0.5<z<1.5, are similar to the va…
Full low resolution (65<R<130) and high resolution (R~600) spectra between 5 microns and 37 microns obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope are presented for eight classical active galactic nuclei (AGN) which have been extensively studied previously. Spectra of these AGN are presented as comparison standards for the many objects, including sources at high redshift, which are being observed spectroscopically in the mid-infrared for the first time using the IRS. The AGN are NGC4151, Markarian 3, I Zwicky 1, NGC 1275, Centaurus A, NGC 7469, Markarian 231, and …
Spectra have been obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope for 20 sources in the Lockman Hole field of the SWIRE survey. The sample is divided between sources with indicators of an obscured AGN, based primarily on X-ray detections of optically-faint sources, and sources with indicators of a starburst, based on optical and near-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) which show a luminosity peak from stellar photospheric emission. Ten of the 11 AGN sources have IRS spectra which show silicate absorption or are power laws; only one AGN source shows PAH e…
We present the results of a Spitzer search for obscured AGN in the Chandra Deep Field-North, using both radio-excess and mid-infrared power-law selection. AGN selected via the former technique tend to lie at z ~ 1, have SEDs dominated by the 1.6 micron stellar bump, and have Seyfert-like X-ray luminosities (when detected in the X-ray). In contrast, the IRAC (3.6-8.0 micron) power-law selected AGN lie at higher redshifts of z ~ 2, and comprise a significant fraction of the most X-ray luminous AGN in the CDF-N. While there is almost no overlap in the AGN samples selected via these two methods, t…
We present the results of Spitzer IRS low-resolution infrared 5-35 micron spectroscopy of nearby ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at z < 0.15. We focus on the search for the signatures of buried active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the complete sample of ULIRGs classified optically as non-Seyferts (LINERs or HII-regions). In addition to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features at 6.2 micron, 7.7 micron, and 11.3 micron, the conventional tool of starburst-AGN separation, we use the optical depths of the 9.7 micron and 18 micron silicate dust absorption features to infer the g…
We report the discovery using Spitzers high resolution spectrograph of 7 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in a sample of 32 late-type galaxies that show no definitive signatures of AGN in their optical spectra. Our observations suggest that the AGN detection rate in late-type galaxies is possibly 4 times larger than what optical spectroscopic observations alone suggest. We demonstrate using photoionization models with an input AGN and an extreme EUV-bright starburst ionizing radiation field that the observed mid-infrared line ratios cannot be replicated unless an AGN contribution, in some cases as…
We present mid-infrared spectroscopy of a sample of 16 optically faint infrared luminous galaxies obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. These sources were jointly selected from Spitzer and Chandra imaging surveys in the NDWFS Bootes field and were selected from their bright X-ray fluxes to host luminous AGN. None of the spectra show significant emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; 6.2um equivalent widths <0.2um), consistent with their infrared emission being dominated by AGN. Nine of the X-ray sources show 9.7um silicate absorption featu…
We have conducted a comprehensive mid-IR spectroscopic investigation of 67 Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Line Regions (LINERs) using archival observations from the high resolution modules of the Infrared Spectrograph on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. Using the [NeV] 14 and 24um lines as active galactic nuclei (AGN) diagnostics, we detect active black holes in 39% of the galaxies in our sample, many of which show no signs of activity in either the optical or X-ray bands. In particular, a detailed comparison of multi-wavelength diagnostics shows that optical studies fail to detect AGN in g…
We present Spitzer rest-frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of twelve z~2 mm-bright type 1 QSOs, selected from unlensed and lensed QSO samples and covering a range of AGN optical luminosities L_5100=10^45 to 10^47 erg/s. On top of the AGN continuum, we detect PAH emission from luminous star formation in nine objects individually as well as in the composite spectrum for the full sample. PAH luminosity and rest frame far-infrared luminosity correlate and extend the similar correlation for lower luminosity local QSOs. This provides strong evidence for intense star formation in the hosts of these mm-b…
We have performed a spectroscopic study of 7 Type 2 QSOs using the mid-infrared spectrometer IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. These are (to our knowledge) the first mid-IR spectra of X-ray selected QSO2s taken. The objects have been selected according to their high intrinsic luminosities and column densities in the X-rays. Their spectra strongly differ from template spectra of Type 2 AGN at lower luminosities. They do not exhibit strong PAH dust emission features from circum-nuclear star forming regions, typical for lower luminosity Type 2 Seyfert galaxies or other previously used QSO…
We present near-infrared spectroscopic observations for a sample of ten optically faint luminous infrared galaxies (R-[24]> 14) using Keck NIRSPEC and Gemini NIRI. The sample is selected from a 24 micron Spitzer MIPS imaging survey of the NDWFS Bootes field. We measure accurate redshifts in the range 1.3<z<3.4. Based on either emission line widths or line diagnostics, we find that all ten galaxies harbor luminous AGN. Seven sources are type I AGN, exhibiting broad (>1900 km/s) Halpha or Hbeta emission lines; the remaining three are type II AGN. Given their large mid-IR luminosities and faint o…
We present mid-infrared spectra of the nearby, Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxy NGC 6240 taken with the IRS on Spitzer. The spectrum of NGC 6240 is dominated by strong fine-structure lines, rotational H2 lines, and PAH emission features. The H2 line fluxes suggest molecular gas at a variety of temperatures. A simple two-temperature fit to the S(0) through S(7) lines implies a mass of 6.7E6 solar masses at T=957K and 1.6E9 solar masses at T=164K, or about 15% of the total molecular gas mass in this system. Noteably, we have detected the [NeV] 14.3 micron emission line, with a flux of 5E-14 erg/cm^…
We present Spitzer 3.6-160 micron images, Spitzer mid-infrared spectra, and JCMT SCUBA 850 micron images of the Sombrero Galaxy (NGC 4594), an Sa galaxy with a 10^9 M_solar low luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN). The brightest infrared sources in the galaxy are the nucleus and the dust ring. The spectral energy distribution of the AGN demonstrates that, while the environment around the AGN is a prominent source of mid-infrared emission, it is a relatively weak source of far-infrared emission, as had been inferred for AGN in previous research. The weak nuclear 160 micron emission and the …
Selection of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the infrared allows the discovery of AGN whose optical emission is extinguished by dust. In this paper, we use the Spitzer Space Telescope First Look Survey (FLS) to assess what fraction of AGN with mid-infrared luminosities comparable to quasars are missed in optical quasar surveys due to dust obscuration. We begin by using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database to identify 54 quasars within the 4 deg^2 extragalactic FLS. These quasars occupy a distinct region in mid-infrared color space by virtue of their strong, red, continua. This has allo…
We present Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC and MIPS observations of the galactic globular cluster M15 (NGC 7078), one of the most metal-poor clusters with a [Fe/H] = -2.4. Our Spitzer images reveal a population of dusty red giants near the cluster center, a previously detected planetary nebula (PN) designated K648, and a possible detection of the intra-cluster medium (ICM) arising from mass loss episodes from the evolved stellar population. Our analysis suggests 9 (+/-2) x 10^-4 solar masses of dust is present in the core of M15, and this material has accumulated over a period of approximately 10…
Early results from the 70-micron observations of the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey are presented. As a whole, about 90% of the population show infrared colors that are consistent with the spectral energy distributions of the local IRAS population of luminous infrared starbursts, while approximately 10% of the sample show warm infrared colors consistent with AGN activity. The mean redshift for the population is z=0.2, and the mean total infrared luminosity is about L(ir)= 2x10^{11} L(sun).
We present mid-infrared spectroscopy obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope of a sample of 11 optically faint, infrared luminous galaxies selected from a Spitzer MIPS 70um imaging survey of the NDWFS Bootes field. These are the first Spitzer IRS spectra presented of distant 70um-selected sources. All the galaxies lie at redshifts 0.3<z<1.3 and have very large infrared luminosities of L_IR~ 0.1-17 x 10^12 solar luminosities. Seven of the galaxies exhibit strong emission features attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The average IRS spectrum of these sources is characteristic…
We have combined a survey at 24 microns to 0.3 mJy with the Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIPS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope, a 20 cm A-array VLA survey covering 0.5 deg^2, and an existing 172 ks Chandra X-Ray Observatory exposure to investigate the nature of optically faint radio and X-ray sources in the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey (NDWFS) in Bootes. We find little overlap between the radio and infrared selected populations: only 9% of the infrared sources are detected in the radio and only 33% of the radio sources are detected in the infrared. Thirty-six (10%) of the 377 compact radio sour…
(Abridged) High-redshift ultra luminous infrared galaxies contribute the bulk of the cosmic IR background and are the best candidates for very massive galaxies in formation at z>1.5. We present Keck/LRIS optical spectroscopy of 35 z>1.4 luminous IR galaxies in the Spitzer Wide-area Infra-Red Extragalactic survey (SWIRE) northern fields (Lockman Hole, ELAIS-N1, ELAIS-N2). The primary targets belong to the ``IR-peak'' class of galaxies, having the 1.6 micron (restframe) stellar feature detected in the IRAC Spitzer channels. The spectral energy distributions of the main targets are thoroughly anal…
We present the far-IR, millimeter, and radio photometry as well as optical and near-IR spectroscopy of a sample of 48 z~1-3 Spitzer-selected ULIRGs with IRS mid-IR spectra. Our goals are to compute their bolometric emission, and to determine both the presence and relative strength of their AGN and starburst components. We find that strong-PAH sources tend to have higher 160um and 1.2mm fluxes than weak-PAH sources. The depth of the 9.7um silicate feature does not affect MAMBO detectability. We fit the far-IR SEDs of our sample and find an average <L_{IR}>~7x10^{12}Lsun for our z>1.5 sources. S…
We analyze five epochs of Spitzer Space Telescope/Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) observations of the nearby spiral galaxy M33. Each epoch covered nearly a square degree at 3.6, 4.5, and 8.0 microns. The point source catalog from the full dataset contains 37,650 stars. The stars have luminosities characteristic of the asymptotic giant branch and can be separated into oxygen-rich and carbon-rich populations by their [3.6] - [4.5] colors. The [3.6] - [8.0] colors indicate that over 80% of the stars detected at 8.0 microns have dust shells. Photometric comparison of epochs using conservative criteri…
Recent X-ray surveys have provided a large number of high-luminosity, obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), the so-called Type 2 quasars. Despite the large amount of multi-wavelength supporting data, the main parameters related to the black holes harbored in such AGN are still poorly known. Here we present the results obtained for a sample of eight Type 2 quasars in the redshift range 0.9-2.1 selected from the HELLAS2XMM survey, for which we used Ks-band, Spitzer IRAC and MIPS data at 24 micron to estimate bolometric corrections, black hole masses, and Eddington ratios.
We are conducting a large observing program with the Spitzer Space Telescope to determine the mid-to-far infrared spectral energy distributions of a well-defined sample of 87 nearby, 12 micron-selected Seyfert galaxies. In this paper we present the results of IRS low-resolution spectroscopy of a statistically representative subsample of 51 of the galaxies (59%), with an analysis of the continuum shapes and a comparison of the Seyfert types. We find that the spectra clearly divide into groups based on their continuum shapes and spectral features. Some spectral features are clearly related to a …
This paper analyses the radio properties of a subsample of optically obscured (R>25.5) galaxies observed at 24um by the Spitzer Space Telescope within the First Look Survey. 96 F[24um]>0.35 mJy objects out of 510 are found to have a radio counterpart at 1.4 GHz, 610 MHz or at both frequencies respectively down to ~40uJy and ~200uJy. IRAC photometry sets the majority of them in the redshift interval z [1-3] and allows for a broad distinction between AGN-dominated galaxies (~47% of the radio-identified sample) and systems powered by intense star-formation (~13%), the remaining objects being impo…
Many models that seek to explain the origin of the unresolved X-ray background predict that Compton-thick Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) are ubiquitious at high redshift. However, few distant Compton-thick AGNs have been reliably identified to date. Here we present Spitzer-IRS spectroscopy and 3.6-70um photometry of a z=2.2 optically identified AGN (HDF-oMD49) that is formally undetected in the 2Ms Chandra Deep Field-North (CDF-N) survey. The Spitzer-IRS spectrum and spectral energy distribution of this object is AGN dominated, and a comparison of the energetics at X-ray wavelengths to those de…
The Spitzer high resolution spectra of 72 Seyfert galaxies from the 12$μ$m Galaxy Sample are presented and discussed. The presence of starburst components in these galaxies can be quantified by powerful mid-IR diagnostics tools (i.e. 11.25$μ$m PAH feature equivalent width and the H$_2$ emission line intensity), as well as the AGN dominance can be measured by specific fine structure line ratios (e.g. [NeV]/[NeII], [NeV]/[SiII], etc.). The two types of Seyfert galaxies do not show any statistical difference in our diagnostic tools. However, the Seyfert 2's showing hidden Broad Line Regions in sp…
High-resolution submm imaging of the HzRG, 4C60.07, at z=3.8, has revealed two dusty components. Spitzer imaging shows that one of these components (B) is coincident with an extremely red AGN, offset by ~4" (~30 kpc) from the HzRG core. The other submm component (A) - resolved by our beam and devoid of emission at 3.6-8.0um - lies between B and the HzRG core. Since the HzRG was discovered via its young, steep-spectrum lobes and their creation was likely triggered by the interaction, we argue that we are witnessing an early-stage merger, prior to its eventual equilibrium state. The interaction …
Deep X-ray surveys provide the most efficient identification of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) activity. However, recent evidence has indicated that the current <10 keV surveys do not detect the most heavily obscured AGNs. Here we explore whether the X-ray undetected AGN population can be identified within the ultra-deep Spitzer survey of the GOODS-N field using X-ray stacking techniques. We find evidence for AGN activity in the Spitzer dataset and the strongest and hardest X-ray signal is produced by galaxies with starburst-like infrared spectral slopes and median properties of z~0.8 and L_IR~1…
Using a combination of deep MID-IR observations obtained by IRAC, MIPS and IRS on board Spitzer we investigate the MID-IR properties of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at z~3, establish a better understanding of their nature and attempt a complete characterisation of the population. With deep mid-infrared and optical observations of ~1000 LBGs covered by IRAC/MIPS and from the ground respectively, we extend the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the LBGs to mid-infrared. Spitzer data reveal for the first time that the mid-infrared properties of the population are inhomogeneous ranging from th…
We present Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC photometry of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 1613. We compare our 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 micron photometry with broadband optical photometry and find that the optical data do not detect 43% and misidentify an additional 11% of the total AGB population, likely because of extinction caused by circumstellar material. Further, we find that a narrowband optical carbon star study of IC 1613 detects 50% of the total AGB population and only considers 18% of this population in calculating the carbon to M-type AGB ratio. We derive an integrated mass-los…
We present sub-millimeter statistical detections of galaxies discovered in the 5'x5' Spitzer Early Release Observations (to 4-15 microJy 5 sigma at 3.6-8 microns, 170 microJy at 24 microns) through a stacking analysis of our reanalysed SCUBA 8mJy survey maps, and a Spitzer identification of a new sub-millimeter point source in the 8mJy survey region. For sources detected at 5.8 or 8 microns (154 and 111 sources respectively), we detect positive skews in the sub-millimeter flux distributions at 99.2-99.8% confidence using Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, at both 850 microns and 450 microns. We also ma…
We present an analysis of deep mid- to far-infrared (MFIR) Spitzer photometric observations of the southern 2Jy sample of powerful radio sources (0.05 < z < 0.7), conducting a statistical investigation of the links between radio jet, AGN, starburst activity and MFIR properties. This is part of an ongoing extensive study of powerful radio galaxies that benefits from both complete optical emission line information and a uniquely high detection rate in the far-infrared (far-IR). We find tight correlations between the MFIR and [OIII] emission luminosities, which are significantly better than those…
Extragalactic sources from the IRAS Faint Source Catalog (FSC) which have the optically faintest magnitudes (E > 18) were selected by spatial coincidence with a source in the FIRST radio survey, and 28 of these sources have been observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer (IRS). While an infrared source is always detected with the IRS at the FIRST position, only ~ 50% of the infrared sources are real FSC detections, as estimated from the number of sources for which the fv(25um) determined with the IRS is fainter than the sensitivity limit for the FSC. Sources have 0.12 < z < 1.0 and lum…
Data from the Spitzer Space Telescope (the First Look Survey - FLS) have recently been made public. We have compared the 24 micron images with very deep WSRT 1.4 GHz observations (Morganti et al. 2004), centred on the FLS verification strip (FLSv). Approximately 75% of the radio sources have corresponding 24 micron identifications. Such a close correspondence is expected, especially at the fainter radio flux density levels, where star forming galaxies are thought to dominate both the radio and mid-IR source counts. Spitzer detects many sources that have no counter-part in the radio. However, a…
Using the large multi-wavelength data set in the chandra/SWIRE Survey (0.6 square degrees in the Lockman Hole), we show evidence for the existence of highly obscured (Compton-thick) AGN, estimate a lower limit to their surface density and characterize their multi-wavelength properties. Two independent selection methods based on the X-ray and infrared spectral properties are presented. The two selected samples contain 1) 5 X-ray sources with hard X-ray spectra and column densities > 10^24 cm-2, and 2) 120 infrared sources with red and AGN-dominated infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs).…
The mid-infrared spectroscopic analysis of a flux-limited sample of galaxies with fv(24um) > 10 mJy is presented. Sources observed are taken from the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS) catalog and from the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey region in Bootes (NDWFS). The spectroscopic sample includes 60 of the 100 sources in these combined catalogs having fv(24um) > 10 mJy. New spectra from the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph are presented for 25 FLS sources and for 11 Bootes AGN; these are combined with 24 Bootes starburst galaxies previously published to determine the distribution of mid-infrared spectra…
We exploit deep combined observations with Spitzer and Chandra of the SWIRE survey in the ELAIS-N1 region, to investigate the nature of the faint X-ray and IR sources in common, to identify AGN/starburst diagnostics, and to study the sources of the X-ray and IR cosmic backgrounds. In the 17'x17' area of the Chandra ACIS-I image there are 3400 SWIRE near-IR sources with 4 sigma detections in at least 2 IRAC bands and 988 sources detected at 24micron with MIPS brighter than 0.1 mJy. Of these, 102 IRAC and 59 MIPS sources have Chandra counterparts, out of a total of 122 X-ray sources present in t…
We present MAMBO 1.2mm observations of 40 extragalactic sources from the Spitzer First Look Survey that are bright in the mid-infrared (S_24um>1mJy) but optically obscured (log_10 (nu F_nu (24um))/(nu F_nu (0.7um))>1). We use these observations to search for cold dust emission, probing the similarity of their spectral energy distributions to star forming infrared galaxies or obscured AGN. The sample as a whole is well detected at mean S_1.2mm=0.74+-0.09mJy and S_1.2mm/S_24um=0.15+-0.03. Seven (three) of the sources are individually detected at >3sigma (>5sigma) levels. Mean millimeter fluxes a…
Multi-wavelength galaxy number counts provide clues on the nature of galaxy evolution. The interpretation per galaxy type with the new code PEGASE.3 of the 12mu (ISO) and 24mu (Spitzer) faint galaxy counts provide new constraints on the dust and stellar emission. It also reveals the nature of ULIRGs (L/Lsun > 10^12) and informs on the cosmic star formation history and the time-scales for mass build-up. We firstly present the faint galaxy counts at 12um derived from the catalogue of the ISO-ESO-Sculptor Survey (ISO-ESS) in a companion paper (Seymour et al. 2007) which go down to 0.24 mJy after …
High-redshift submillimetre-bright galaxies identified by blank field surveys at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths appear in the region of the IRAC colour-colour diagrams previously identified as the domain of luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our analysis using a set of empirical and theoretical dusty starburst spectral energy distribution (SED) models shows that power-law continuum sources associated with hot dust heated by young (<100 Myr old), extreme starbursts at z>2 also occupy the same general area as AGNs in the IRAC colour-colour plots. A detailed comparison of the IRAC …
We present the first systematic investigation of the [NeV] (14um/24um) and [SIII] (18um/33um) infrared line flux ratios, traditionally used to estimate the density of the ionized gas, in a sample of 41 Type 1 and Type 2 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) observed with the Infrared Spectrograph on board Spitzer. The majority of galaxies with both [NeV] lines detected have observed [NeV] line flux ratios consistent with or below the theoretical low density limit, based on calculations using currently available collision strengths and ignoring absorption and stimulated emission. We find that Type 2 AG…
The first high resolution Spitzer IRS 9-37um spectra of 29 Seyfert galaxies (about one quarter) of the 12um Active Galaxy Sample are presented and discussed. The high resolution spectroscopy was obtained with corresponding off-source observations. This allows excellent background subtraction, so that the continuum levels and strengths of weak emission lines are accurately measured. The result is several new combinations of emission line ratios, line/continuum and continuum/continuum ratios that turn out to be effective diagnostics of the strength of the AGN component in the IR emission of thes…
Galaxy source counts that simultaneously fit the deep mid-infrared surveys at 24 microns and 15 microns made by the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) respectively are presented for two phenomenological models. The models are based on starburst and luminous infrared galaxy dominated populations. Both models produce excellent fits to the counts in both wavebands and provide an explanation for the high redshift population seen in the longer Spitzer 24 micron band supporting the hypothesis that they are luminous-ultraluminous infrared galaxies at z=2-3, being the mid…
High resolution mid-infrared spectra are presented for 155 nuclear and extranuclear regions from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS). The fluxes for nine atomic forbidden and three molecular hydrogen mid-infrared emission lines are also provided, along with upper limits in key lines for infrared-faint targets. The SINGS sample shows a wide range in the ratio of [SIII]18.71um/[SIII]33.48um, but the average ratio of the ensemble indicates a typical interstellar electron density of 300-400 cm^{-3} on ~23"x15" scales and 500-600 cm^{-3} using ~11"x9" apertures, independent of wheth…
We investigate the stellar populations of a sample of 162 Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z = 3.1 in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, using deep Spitzer IRAC data available from the GOODS and SIMPLE surveys to derive reliable stellar population estimates. We divide the LAEs according to their rest-frame near-IR luminosities into IRAC-detected and IRAC-undetected samples. About 70% of the LAEs are undetected in 3.6 micron down to [3.6] = 25.2 AB. Stacking analysis reveals that the average stellar population of the IRAC-undetected sample has an age of ~ 200 Myr and a mass of ~ 3x10…
We explore the stellar population of M31 in a Spitzer Space Telescope survey utilizing IRAC and MIPS observations. Red supergiants are the brightest objects seen in the infrared; they are a prominent evolutionary phase. Due to their circumstellar envelopes, many of these radiate the bulk of their luminosity at IRAC wavelengths and do not stand out in the near infrared or optically. Going fainter, we see large numbers of luminous asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, many of which are known long period variables. Relative to M33, the AGB carbon star population of M31 appears sparse, but this nee…
This paper addresses the origin of the far-infrared (FIR) continuum of QSOs, based on the Quasar and ULIRG Evolution Study (QUEST) of nearby QSOs and ULIRGs using observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope. For 27 Palomar-Green QSOs at z <~ 0.3, we derive luminosities of diagnostic lines ([NeII]12.8um, [NeV]14.3um, [OIV]25.9um) and emission features (PAH7.7um emission which is related to star formation), as well as continuum luminosities over a range of mid- to far-infrared wavelengths between 6 and 60um. We detect star-formation related PAH emission in 11/26 QSOs and fine-structure line em…
The Cosmic Infrared Background (CIB) peaks in the Far-Infrared (FIR), and its Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) is now well constrained. Thanks to recent facilities and Spitzer, the populations contributing to the CIB are being characterized: the dominant galaxy contributions to the FIR CIB are Luminous IR galaxies (LIRGs) at 0.5<z<1.5 and, to the submm CIB, Ultra-LIRGs at z>2. These populations of galaxies experience very high rates of evolution with redshift. Because of confusion, the CIB is (and will remain in some domains) partially resolved and its contributing galaxies SEDs are not well…
We present Spitzer/IRAC observations at 3.6 and 4.5 microns along with optical data from the Local Group Galaxies Survey to investigate the evolved stellar population of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy WLM. These observations provide a nearly complete census of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We find 39% of the infrared-detected AGB stars are not detected in the optical data, even though our 50% completeness limit is three magnitudes fainter than the red giant branch tip. An additional 4% of the infrared-detected AGBs are misidentified in the optical, presumably due to reddenin…
We present spectra taken with the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer covering the 5-38micron region of three Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs): Mrk 1014 (z=0.163), and Mrk 463 (z=0.051), and UGC 5101 (z=0.039). The continua of UGC 5101 and Mrk 463 show strong silicate absorption suggesting significant optical depths to the nuclei at 10microns. UGC 5101 also shows the clear presence of water ice in absorption. PAH emission features are seen in both Mrk 1014 and UGC 5101, including the 16.4micron line in UGC 5101. The fine structure lines are consistent with dominant AGN power sources in bo…
We identify 17 possible 8.0 micron-selected counterparts to the submillimeter galaxies in the CUDSS 14-hour field, derived from deep imaging carried out with the IRAC and MIPS instruments aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. Ten of the 17 counterparts are not the same as those previously identified at shorter wavelengths. We argue that 8.0 micron selection offers a better means for identifying counterparts to submillimeter galaxies than near-infrared or optical selection. Based on the panchromatic SEDs, most counterparts appear to be powered by ongoing star formation. Power-law fits to the SEDs…
We have obtained high S/N Spitzer IRS spectra of 17 Virgo early-type galaxies that lie on the colour-magnitude relation of passively evolving galaxies in the cluster. To flux calibrate these extended sources we have devised a new procedure that allows us to obtain the intrinsic spectral energy distribution and to disentangle resolved and unresolved emission within the same object. Thirteen objects of the sample (76%) show a pronounced broad silicate feature (above 10micron) which is spatially extended and likely of stellar origin, in agreement with model predictions. The other 4 objects (24%) …
We employ X-ray stacking techniques to examine the contribution from X-ray undetected, mid-infrared-selected sources to the unresolved, hard (6-8 keV) cosmic X-ray background (CXB). We use the publicly available, 24 micron Spitzer Space Telescope MIPS catalogs from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) - North and South fields, which are centered on the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-North and the 1 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South, to identify bright (S_24 > 80 microJy) mid-infrared sources that may be powered by heavily obscured AGNs. We measure a significant stacked X-ray signal in all of…
