We describe a set-up for studying adsorption of helium in silica aerogels, where the adsorbed amount is easily and precisely controlled by varying the temperature of a gas reservoir between 80 K and 180 K. We present validation experiments and a first application to aerogels. This device is well adapted to study hysteresis, relaxation, and metastable states in the adsorption and desorption of fluids in porous media.
In this work, a two-dimensional mathematical model is developed to study the flow patterns and volumetric flow penetrations in the flow channel over the porous electrode layered system in vanadium flow battery with serpentine flow field design. The flow distributions at the interface between the flow channel and porous electrode are examined. It is found that the non-linear pressure distributions can distinguish the interface flow distributions under the ideal plug flow and ideal parabolic flow inlet boundary conditions. However, the volumetric flow penetration within the porous electrode bene…
This work reports an innovative humidity driven actuation concept based on Bangham effect using simple nanoporous sol-gel silica thin films as humidity responsive materials. Bilayer shaped actuators, consisting on a humidity-sensitive active nanostructured silica film deposited on a polymeric substrate (Kapton) were demonstrated as an original mean to convert water molecule adsorption and capillary condensation in useable mechanical work. Reversible silica surface energy modifications by water adsorption and the energy produced by the rigid silica film contraction, induced by water capillary c…
In this work, we present a mathematical model to describe the adsorption-diffusion process on fractal porous materials. This model is based on the fractal continuum approach and considers the scale-invariant properties of the surface and volume of adsorbent particles, which are well-represented by their fractal dimensions. The method of lines was used to solve the nonlinear fractal model, and the numerical predictions were compared with experimental data to determine the fractal dimensions through an optimization algorithm. The intraparticle mass flux and the mean square displacement dynamics …
It is shown that porous spherical particles can be obtained via the freezing of silica nanoparticle aqueous suspensions emulsified in a continuous oil phase. After two freeze-thaw cycles, nanoparticles turn aggregated into flocculated objects with microstructure that depends upon emulsion volume fraction and droplet size. For low volume fractions, regular microspheres are produced while for large ones, irregular beads with several tens of micrometer radius are formed. Electronic microscopy, mercury porosimetry and nitrogen adsorption are used to get insights into these porous particles typical…
Vapor adsorption experiments are widely used to assess pore size distributions, but the large hysteresis sometimes observed between sorption and desorption isotherms remains difficult to interpret. Such hysteresis is influenced pore network connectivity, which has previously been modeled by percolation on infinite lattices. Our hypothesis is that percolation occurs instead through finite networks of micropores connecting accessible macropores, always exposed to the outside environment. We derive a general formula for sorption/desorption isotherms that introduces a simple measure of hierarchica…
Liquid adsorption in nanoporous materials induces their deformation due to strong capillary forces. The linear relationship between the liquid pressure and the solid strain (pore-load modulus) provides an experimental technique to determine the mechanical properties of nanosized solids. Puzzling experimental results have often been reported, leading to a severe reconsideration of the mechanical properties of the thin walls, the introduction of surface stresses, and the suggestion of a mutual influence of fluid adsorption and matrix deformation. This work presents a molecular simulation examina…
The SPT2 approach is based on the scaled particle theory and developed for the description of thermodynamic properties of hard sphere (HS) fluids in disordered porous media. Using this approach a porous medium is modelled as a quenched matrix of hard spheres (HS) or overlapping hard spheres (OHS). A hard sphere fluid immersed in a matrix can move in a void between matrix particles. A number of approximations were previously proposed within the SPT2 approach. Among these approximations, the SPT2b1 has been considered as the most successful and accurate one in a large range of fluid densities an…
Atomically thin molecular carbon nanomembranes (CNMs) with intrinsic sub-nanometer porosity are considered as promising candidates for next generation filtration and gas separation applications due to their extremely low thickness, energy efficiency and selectivity. CNMs are intrinsically porous which is advantageous over other 2D materials such as graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides where defects and pores need to be introduced after synthesis. It was already discovered that water and helium permeate through 4,4-terphenylthiol (TPT) CNM above the limit of detection. Additionally, th…
