Ultraperipheral collisions at collider energies are a useful tool to study photon-hadron (proton/nucleus) and photon-photon interactions in a hitherto unexplored energy regime. Theoretical tools to study these processes are briefly described. Some current results and problems are discussed
We argue that the STAR data on $J/ψ$ photoproduction in $d+Au$ ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the momentum transfer $t \neq 0$ primarily probes elastic and possibly nucleon-dissociative $J/ψ$ photoproduction on quasi-free nucleons, while being essentially insensitive to expectedly weak nuclear modifications of the gluon distribution in the deuteron. Analyzing the STAR detector capabilities for selection of UPC events, we explore the possibility that the contribution of nucleon-dissociative $J/ψ$ photoproduction is negligibly small and obtain a very good description of the $t$ dependence …
We propose to measure the linear polarization of the external electromagnetic fields of a relativistic heavy ion through azimuthal asymmetries in dilepton production in ultraperipheral collisions. The asymmetries estimated with the equivalent photon approximation are shown to be sizable.
Photoproduction of $ρ^0$ mesons in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions at energies available at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC)
We discuss the two-gluon exchange contribution (formally three-loops) to elastic photon-photon scattering in the high-energy approximation. The elastic $γγ\to γγ$ amplitude is given in the impact-factor representation for all helicity configurations and finite quark masses. We discuss the importance of including the charm quark, which contribution, due to interference, can enhance the cross section considerably. We investigate the contribution to the $γγ\to γγ$ amplitude from the soft region, by studying its dependence on nonperturbative gluon mass. Helicity-flip contributions are shown to be …
Large-distance ultraperipheral collisions of two relativistic ions are considered. The clouds of photons surrounding the ions are responsible for their distant electromagnetic interaction. The perturbative approach and the method of equivalent photons are described. It is shown that the total cross section of these collisions increases rapidly with increasing energy and is especially large for heavy ions. Some experimental data and their comparison with theoretical approaches are described. Further proposals are discussed.
We calculate the coherent and incoherent production of $J/ψ$ in PbPb ultraperipheral collisions. The production of $J/ψ$ in ultraperipheral collsions is product of photon flux distributions and cross section of photon-nucleus scatterings. The distributions of photon flux is computed in light-cone perturbation theory and the cross section of photon-nucleus scatterings is calculated in dipole model, we assume that the two gluons exchange contribution is the coherent cross section and the large-$N_c$ contribution is the incoherent cross section in photon-nucleus scattering. The numerical result o…
We explore the possibility of observing Odderon exchange in proton--ion collisions at the LHC, via the ultraperipheral photoproduction of C-even mesons. As well as the signal, we consider in detail the principle backgrounds, due to QCD--initiated production (i.e. double Pomeron exchange) and $γγ$ fusion. We find that while the photon--initiated background is dominant at very small momentum transfer, this can be effectively removed by placing a reasonable cut on the transverse momentum of the produced meson. In the case of QCD--initiated production, we show this is in general strongly suppresse…
It is shown that production of low-mass $e^+e^-$-pairs in ultraperipheral nuclear collisions is enhanced due to the Sommerfeld-Gamow-Sakharov (SGS) factor. This effect is especially strong near the threshold of creation of unbound $e^+e^-$-pairs with low masses in the two-photon fusion. Coulomb attraction of the non-relativistic components of such pairs may lead to the increased intensity of 511 keV photons. It can be recorded at the NICA collider and has some astrophysical implications. The analogous effect can be observed at LHC in dilepton production.
We make predictions for the cross sections of diffractive dijet photoproduction in $pp$, $pA$ and $AA$ ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the LHC during Runs 1 and 2 using next-to-leading perturbative QCD. We find that the resulting cross sections are sufficiently large and, compared to lepton-proton scattering at HERA, have an enhanced sensitivity to small observed momentum fractions in the diffractive exchange, commonly denoted $z_{P}^{\rm jets}$, and an unprecedented reach in the invariant mass of the photon-nucleon system $W$. We examine two competing schemes of diffractive QCD factoriza…
In this article, we study the fully differential observables of exclusive production of heavy (charm and bottom) quark pairs in high-energy ultraperipheral $pA$ and $AA$ collisions. In these processes, the nucleus $A$ serves as an efficient source of the photon flux, while the QCD interaction of the produced heavy-quark pair with the target ($p$ or $A$) proceeds via an exchange of gluons in a color singlet state, described by the gluon Wigner distribution. The corresponding predictions for differential cross sections were obtained by using the dipole $S$-matrix in the McLerran--Venugopalan sat…
Perturbative and non-perturbative terms of the cross sections of ultraperipheral production of lepton pairs in ion collisions are taken into account. It is shown that production of low-mass $e^+e^-$ pairs is strongly enhanced (compared to perturbative estimates) due to the non-perturbative Sommerfeld-Gamow-Sakharov (SGS) factor. Coulomb attraction of the non-relativistic components of those pairs leads to the finite value of their mass distribution at lowest masses. Their annihilation can result in the increased intensity of 511 keV photons. It can be recorded at the NICA collider and is espec…
We study dilepton, proton-antiproton and diphoton production in ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 and 5.5 TeV. The nuclear calculations are based on equivalent photon approximation in the impact parameter space. For correct description of the $γγ\to p\bar{p} $ Belle data we include the proton-exchange, the $f_2(1270)$ and $f_2(1950)$ s-channel exchanges, as well as the handbag mechanism. For four muon production, we take into account electromagnetic (two-photon) double-scattering production and direct $γγ$ production of four muons in one scattering. The cr…
We discuss diphoton semi(exclusive) production in ultraperipheral $PbPb$ collisions at energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 5.5 TeV (LHC). The nuclear calculations are based on equivalent photon approximation in the impact parameter space. The cross sections for elementary $γγ\to γγ$ subprocess are calculated including three different mechanisms: box diagrams with leptons and quarks in the loops, a VDM-Regge contribution with virtual intermediate hadronic excitations of the photons and the two-gluon exchange contribution (formally three-loops). We got relatively high cross sections in $PbPb$ collisions.…
Ultra-relativistic peripheral collisions of heavy ions at LHC can produce copies of numbers of lepton pairs via the two-photon process. Since the energy of the heavy ions is so high, multi-pair production cross-sections of the light leptons especially electrons are quite large so that it is possible to measure them experimentally. To calculate the multi-pair production probabilities, first, we should have an impact parameter dependence cross-section. We have obtained a well-behaved impact parameter dependence cross-section and by using the Monte-Carlo methods, we have calculated multi-pair pro…
In this paper we consider the production of proton-antiproton pairs in two-photon interactions in electron-positron and heavy-ion collisions. We try to understand the dependence of the total cross section on the photon-photon c.m. energy as well as corresponding angular distributions measured by the Belle Collaboration for the $γγ\to p \bar{p}$ process. To understand the Belle data we include the proton-exchange, the $f_2(1270)$ and $f_2(1950)$ $s$-channel exchanges, as well as the hand-bag mechanism. The helicity amplitudes for the $γγ\to f_{2} \to p \bar{p}$ process are written explicitly ba…
We describe pair-production models of spin-0 and spin-1/2 magnetic monopoles and high-electric-charge objects in proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions, considering both the Drell-Yan and the photon-fusion processes. In particular, we extend the Drell-Yan production model of spin-1/2 high-electric-charge objects to include $Z^0$-boson exchange for proton-proton collisions. Furthermore, we explore spin-1/2 and, for the first time, spin-0 production in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. With matrix element calculations and equivalent photon fluxes implemented in MadGraph5_aMC@NLO, we present …

In this note we study the conversion of nucleons into deltas induced by a strong magnetic field in ultraperipheral relativistic heavy ion collisions. The interaction Hamiltonian couples the magnetic field to the spin operator, which, acting on the spin part of the wave function, converts a spin 1/2 into a spin 3/2 state. We estimate this transition probability and calculate the cross section for delta production. This process can in principle be measured, since the delta moves close to the beam and decays almost exclusively into pions. Forward pions may be detected by forward calorimeters.
The photoproduction of bottomonium-like states $Z_{b}(10610)$ and $Z_{b}(10650)$ via $γp$ scattering is studied within an effectiv Lagrangian approach and the vector-meson-dominance model. The Regge model is employed to calculate the photoproduction of $Z_{b}$ states via $t$-channel with $π$ exchange. The numerical results show that the values of the total cross-sections of $Z_{b}(10610)$ and $Z_{b}(10650)$ can reach 0.09 nb and 0.02 nb, respectively, near the center of mass energy of 22 GeV. The experimental measurements and studies on the photoproduction of $Z_{b}$ states near energy region a…

We discuss the role of meson exchange mechanisms in $γγ\to γγ$ scattering. Several pseudoscalar ($π^0$, $η$, $η'(958)$, $η_c(1S)$, $η_c(2S)$), scalar ($f_{0}(500)$, $f_0(980)$, $a_0(980)$, $f_0(1370)$, $χ_{c0}(1P)$) and tensor ($f_2(1270)$, $a_2(1320)$, $f_2'(1525)$, $f_2(1565)$, $a_2(1700)$) mesons are taken into account. We consider not only $s$-channel but also for the first time $t$- and $u$-channel meson exchange amplitudes corrected for off-shell effects including vertex form factors. We find that, depending on not well known vertex form factors, the meson exchange amplitudes interfere a…
With the attempts of extending the hydrodynamic framework of heavy-ion collision to proton-proton and other small and low energy systems, we are confronted with the question of how small the system can get and still be safely modelled as a fluid. One of the transport coefficients required in the $2^{nd}$ order relativistic viscous hydrodynamics is the shear relaxation time, inclusion of which solves the causality violation problem in the Navier-Stokes equation. In phenomenological studies this coefficient has been taken as a constant and much attention has gone into finding and fixing the shea…
The cross section for exclusive $Υ$ ultraperipheral photoproduction at present and future colliders is determined using the low $x$ gluon PDF extracted from an analysis of exclusive $J/ψ$ measurements performed at HERA and the LHC. Predictions are given at next-to-leading order in collinear factorisation over a wide $γp$ centre-of-mass energy range, calculated assuming the non-relativistic approximation for the $Υ$ wave function, and with skewing corrections incorporated.
Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experiments at the planned Electron-Ion Collider will be affected by details of the hadron formation inside the nuclear volume. Besides semi-inclusive particle production experiments decays of the target nucleus via emission of neutrons provide an additional opportunity to probe this domain. This paper reports on the hybrid dynamical+statistical calculations of low-energy neutron production in muon- and virtual photon-induced collisions with nuclei. We confirm the conclusion that the E665 data on neutron production in $μ^-$ + Pb DIS at 470 GeV indicate a strong …
Using the relativistic Eikonal approximation, we study the one and two photon exchange amplitudes in elastic electron-nucleon scattering for the case of transversely polarized nucleons with unpolarized electrons beam. In our approach, we utilize the convolution theory of Fourier transforms and the transverse charge density in transverse momentum space to evaluate the one and two photon exchange Eikonal amplitudes. The results obtained for the $2γ$ amplitude in impact parameter space are compared to the corresponding 4D case. We show that while the one and two photon cross sections are azimutha…
We reanalyze the scaling properties of inclusive quasielastic electron scattering from $^{12}$C by subtracting from the data the effects of two-particle emission. A model of relativistic meson-exchange currents (MEC) is employed within the mean field theory of nuclear matter, with scalar and vector potentials that induce an effective mass and a vector energy to the nucleons. A new phenomenological quasielastic scaling function is extracted from a selection of the data after the subtraction of the 2p-2h contribution. The resulting superscaling approach with relativistic effective mass (SuSAM*) …

We calculate two-photon exchange amplitudes for the elastic electron-hadron scattering in the nonrelativistic approximation, and obtain analytical formulae for them. Numerical calculations are performed for proton and $^3$He targets. Comparing our numerical results with relativistic calculations, we find that the real part of the amplitude is described well at moderate $Q^2$, but the imaginary part strongly differs from the relativistic result. Thus the nonrelativistic approximation should not be used for calculation of observables which depend on the imaginary part of the amplitude, such as s…
We develop a model of relativistic, charged meson-exchange currents (MEC) for neutrino-nucleus interactions. The two-body current is the sum of seagull, pion-in-flight, pion-pole and $Δ$-pole operators. These operators are obtained from the weak pion-production amplitudes for the nucleon derived in the non-linear $σ$-model together with weak excitation of the $Δ(1232)$ resonance and its subsequent decay into $Nπ$. With these currents we compute the five 2p-2h response functions contributing to $(ν_l,l^-)$ and $(\overlineν_l,l^+)$ reactions in the relativistic Fermi gas model. The total current…
