We compare the distribution of optically and Halpha (Ha) selected galaxies in the Southern half of the nearby Abell 85 (A85) cluster with the recently discovered X-ray filament (XRF). We search for galaxies where star formation (SF) may have been triggered by interactions with intracluster gas or tidal pressure due to the cluster potential when entering the cluster. Our analysis is based on images obtained with CFHT MegaPrime/MegaCam (1x1 deg2 field) in four bands (ugri) and ESO 2.2mWFI (38'x36' field) in a narrow band filter corresponding to the redshifted Halpha (Ha) line and in a broad R-band filter. The LFs are estimated by statistically subtracting a reference field. Background contamination is minimized by cutting out galaxies redder than the observed red sequence in the g-i vs. i colour-magnitude diagram. The galaxy distribution shows a significantly flattened cluster, whose principal axis is slightly offset from the XRF. The analysis of the broad band LFs shows that the filament region is well populated. The filament is also independently detected as a gravitationally bound structure by the Serna & Gerbal hierarchical method. 101 galaxies are detected in Ha, among which 23 have spectroscopic redshifts in the cluster, 2 have spectroscopic redshifts higher than the cluster and 58 have photometric redshifts that tend to indicate that they are background objects. The 23 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the cluster are mostly concentrated in the South part of the cluster and along the filament. We find a number of galaxies showing evidence for SF in the XRF, and all our results are consistent with the previous hypothesis that the XRF in A85 is a gravitationally bound structure made of groups falling on to the main cluster.
From ROSAT data, the bright X-ray cluster Abell 85 was found to show a roughly symmetrical shape, on to which are superimposed several features, among which: (1) a blob or group of galaxies falling on to the main cluster, with the gas in the impact region probably hotter and the galaxies in that zone showing enhanced star formation; (2) a filament, either diffuse or made of small groups of galaxies, extending at least 4 Mpc from the cluster (Durret et al. 1998). Preliminary results obtained from XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of Abell 85 and its filament will be presented.
We have observed with XMM-Newton the extended 4 Mpc filament detected by the ROSAT PSPC in the neighbourhood of the cluster of galaxies Abell 85. We confirm that there is an extended feature, aligned at the same position angle as the major axis of the central cD, the bright cluster galaxies, and nearby groups and clusters. We find that the X-ray emission from the filament is best described by thermal emission with a temperature of about 2 keV, which is significantly lower than the ambient cluster medium, but is significantly higher than anticipated for a gas in a weakly bound extended filament…
About half of the baryons in the local Universe are invisible and - according to simulations - their dominant fraction resides in filaments connecting clusters of galaxies in the form of low density gas with temperatures in the range of 10^5<T<10^7 K. The existence of this warm-hot intergalactic medium was never unambiguously proven observationally in X-rays. We probe the low gas densities expected in the large scale structure filaments by observing a filament connecting the massive clusters of galaxies A 222 and A 223 (z=0.21) which has a favorable orientation approximately along our line of …
We report the first direct detection with Spitzer of galaxy filaments. Using Spitzer and ancillary optical data, we have discovered two filamentary structures in the outskirts of the cluster Abell 1763. Both filaments point toward Abell 1770 which lies at the same redshift as Abell 1763 (z=0.23), at a projected distance of ~13 Mpc. The X-ray cluster emission is elongated along the same direction. Most of the far-infrared emission is powered by star formation. According to the optical spectra, only one of the cluster members is classified as an active galactic nucleus. Star formation is clearly…
The connection of cluster mergers with the presence of extended, diffuse radio sources in galaxy clusters is still debated. An interesting case is the rich, merging cluster Abell 520, containing a radio halo. A recent gravitational analysis has shown in this cluster the presence of a massive dark core suggested to be a possible problem for the current cold dark matter paradigm. We aim to obtain new insights into the internal dynamics of Abell 520 analyzing velocities and positions of member galaxies. Our analysis is based on redshift data for 293 galaxies in the cluster field obtained combinin…
We report on the discovery of a large-scale wall in the direction of Abell 22. Using photometric and spectroscopic data from the Las Campanas Observatory and Anglo-Australian Telescope Rich Cluster Survey, Abell 22 is found to exhibit a highly unusual and striking redshift distribution. We show that Abell 22 exhibits a foreground wall-like structure by examining the galaxy distributions in both redshift space and on the colour-magnitude plane. A search for other galaxies and clusters in the nearby region using the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey database suggests that the wall-like structure is a s…
We report the discovery of a 40 arcsec long X-ray filament in the core of the cluster of galaxies A1795. The feature coincides with an Halpha+NII filament found by Cowie et al in the early 1980s and resolved into at least 2 U-band filaments by McNamara et al in the mid 1990s. The (emission-weighted) temperature of the X-ray emitting gas along the filament is 2.5-3 keV, as revealed by X-ray colour ratios. The deprojected temperature will be less. A detailed temperature map of the core of the cluster presented. The cD galaxy at the head of the filament is probably moving through or oscillating i…
We present results from a pilot study of a new wide-field, multicolour (BVR) CCD imaging project, designed to examine galaxy evolution along large scale filaments that connect clusters of galaxies at intermediate redshifts (0.08 < z < 0.20). Our pilot dataset is based on 0.56 square degrees of observations targeted on Abell 1079 and Abell 1084 using the Wide Field Imager on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We describe our data reduction pipeline and show that our photometric error is 0.04 mags. By selecting galaxies that lie on the colour-magnitude relation of the two clusters we verify the exi…
We present the results of an analysis of broad band UV observations of the central regions of Abell 1795 observed with the optical monitor on XMM-Newton. As have been found with other UV observations of the central regions of clusters of galaxies, we find evidence for star formation. However, we also find evidence for absorption in the cD galaxy on a more extended scale than has been seen with optical imaging. We also report the first UV observation of part of the filamentary structure seen in H$α$, X-rays and very deep U band imaging. The part of the filament we see is very blue with UV colou…
The Pisces-Cetus supercluster (redshift z~0.06) is one of the richest nearby (z<0.1) superclusters of galaxies, and emerges as a remarkable filament of galaxies at the edges of the two-degree-field galaxy redshift survey and the ongoing Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We explore the extent of the supercluster on the sky and in redshift space, and map the distribution of its constituent clusters and groups. We find evidence of enhanced star formation in galaxies belonging to groups in the supercluster compared to those in the field. This effect appears to be higher among the poorer groups than in the…
We present high-resolution UV spectra of absorption-line systems toward the low-z QSO HS0624+6907 (z=0.3700). Coupled with spectroscopic galaxy redshifts, we find that many of these absorbers are integalactic gas clouds distributed within large-scale structures. The gas is cool (T<10^5 K) and has relatively high metallicity (Z/Z_sol>0.9). STIS data reveal a cluster of 13 HI Lyman alpha lines within a 1000 km/s interval at z=0.0635. We find 10 galaxies at this redshift with impact parameters ranging from 135 h^-1 kpc to 1.37 h^-1 Mpc. We attribute the HI Lya absorptions to intragroup medium gas…
We report the discovery of two highly extended filaments and one extremely high density knot within the region of Aquarius. The supercluster candidates were chosen via percolation analysis of the Abell and ACO catalogs and include only the richest clusters (R >= 1). The region examined is a 10x45 degree strip and is now 87% complete in cluster redshift measurements to mag_10 = 18.3. In all, we report 737 galaxy redshifts in 46 cluster fields. One of the superclusters, dubbed Aquarius, is comprised of 14 Abell/ACO clusters and extends 110h^-1Mpc in length only 7 degrees off the line-of-sight. O…
We present a weak lensing analysis of the double cluster system Abell 222 and Abell 223. The lensing reconstruction shows evidence for a possible dark matter filament connecting both clusters. The case for a filamentary connection between A 222/223 is supported by an analysis of the galaxy density and X-ray emission between the clusters. Using the results of N-body simulations, we try to develop a criterion that separates this system into cluster and filament regions. The aim is to find a technique that allows the quantification of the significance of (weak lensing) filament candidates in clos…
Our XMM-Newton observations of Abell 85 confirm the extended 4 Mpc filament first detected with ROSAT, which has an X-ray temperature of about 2 keV and is probably made of groups falling on to the cluster. A comparison of the temperature map with numerical simulations show that Abell 85 had intense merging activity in the past and is not fully relaxed, even in the central region. Finally, a deprojected temperature profile has been calculated and used, together with the suface brightness, to estimate the entropy and pressure profiles. Abell 85 only presents a mild flattening of the entropy pro…
We study the distribution of X-ray selected clusters of galaxies with respect to superclusters determined by Abell clusters of galaxies and show that the distribution of X-ray clusters follows the supercluster-void network determined by Abell clusters. We find that in this network X-ray clusters are more strongly clustered than other clusters. Poor, non-Abell X-ray clusters follow the supercluster-void network as well: these clusters are embedded in superclusters determined by rich clusters and populate filaments between them. We present a new catalog of superclusters of Abell clusters out to …
We discuss the physical nature of a remarkably faint pair of Lyman alpha-emitting images discovered close to the giant cD galaxy in the lensing cluster Abell 2218 (z=0.18) during a systematic survey for highly-magnified star-forming galaxies beyond z=5. A well-constrained mass model suggests the pair arises via a gravitationally-lensed source viewed at high magnification. Keck spectroscopy confirms the lensing hypothesis and implies the unlensed source is a very faint (I~30) compact (<150 pc) and isolated object at z=5.576 whose optical emission is substantially contained within the Lyman alph…
In the current paradigm of cold dark matter cosmology, large-scale structures are assembling through hierarchical clustering of matter. In this process, an important role is played by megaparsec (Mpc)-scale cosmic shock waves, arising in gravity-driven supersonic flows of intergalactic matter onto dark matter-dominated collapsing structures such as pancakes, filaments, and clusters of galaxies. Here, we report Very Large Array telescope observations of giant (~2 Mpc by 1.6 Mpc), ring-shaped nonthermal radio-emitting structures, found at the outskirts of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 3376.…
We present a weak shear analysis of the Abell 901/902 supercluster, composed of three rich clusters at z=0.16. Using a deep R-band image from the 0.5 x 0.5 degree MPG/ESO Wide Field Imager together with supplementary B-band observations, we build up a comprehensive picture of the light and mass distributions in this region. We find that, on average, the light from the early-type galaxies traces the dark matter fairly well, although one cluster is a notable exception to this rule. The clusters themselves exhibit a range of mass-to-light (M/L) ratios, X-ray properties, and galaxy populations. We…
We present deep VLA observations of the galaxy clusters Abell 2256 and Abell 754, both of which appear to be in the violent stage of major cluster merger events. The complex nature of Abell 2256 is revealed through radio images which, in addition to the head-tail galaxies, show two extended, irregular, and sharp-edged regions of diffuse radio emission at the cluster periphery (so called radio relics), and a large-scale diffuse radio halo located in the central regions of the cluster. Polarimetry of the A2256 cluster relics reveals large-scale ordered magnetic fields which appear to trace the b…
We have observed the cluster of galaxies Abell 85 with XMM-Newton. These data have allowed us to confirm in a previous paper the existence of the extended 4 Mpc filament detected by the ROSAT PSPC in the neighbourhood of this cluster, and to determine an X-ray temperature of about about 2 keV. We now present a thorough analysis of the properties of the X-ray gas in the cluster itself, including temperature and metallicity maps for the entire cluster. These results show that Abell 85 had intense merging activity in the past and is not fully relaxed, even in the central region. We have also dete…
We present a Chandra observation of the merging cluster of galaxies Abell 2744. The cluster shows strong evidence for an ongoing major merger which we believe to be responsible for the radio halo. X-ray emission and temperature maps of the cluster, combined with the spatial and redshift distribution of the galaxies, indicate a roughly north-south axis for the merger, with a significant velocity component along the line of sight. The merger is occurring at a very large velocity, with M = 2-3. In addition, there is a small merging subcluster toward the northwest, unrelated to the major merger, w…
A prediction of the galaxy cluster cooling flow model is that as gas cools from the ambient cluster temperature, emission lines are produced in gas at subsequently decreasing temperatures. Gas passing through 10^5.5 K emits in the lines of OVI 1032,1035, and here we report a FUSE study of these lines in three cooling flow clusters, Abell 426, Abell 1795, and AWM 7. No emission was detected from AWM 7, but OVI is detected from the centers of Abell 426 and Abell 1795, and possibly to the south of the center in Abell 1795, where X-ray and optical emission line filaments lie. In Abell 426, these l…
We have examined the orientations of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in poor MKW and AWM clusters and find that, like their counterparts in richer Abell clusters, poor cluster BCGs exhibit a strong propensity to be aligned with the principal axes of their host clusters as well as the surrounding distribution of nearby (< 20/h Mpc) Abell clusters. The processes responsible for dominant galaxy alignments are therefore independent of cluster richness. We argue that these alignments most likely arise from anisotropic infall of material into clusters along large-scale filaments.
We present a dynamical analysis of the central ~1.3 square degrees of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1367, based on 273 redshift measurements (of which 119 are news). From the analysis of the 146 confirmed cluster members we derive a significantly non-Gaussian velocity distribution, with a mean location C_{BI} = 6484+/-81 km/s and a scale S_{BI} = 891+/-58 km/s. The cluster appears elongated from the North-West to the South-East with two main density peaks associated with two substructures. The North-West subcluster is probably in the early phase of merging into the South-East substructure (~ 0…
NGC 1275 in the centre of the Perseus cluster of galaxies, Abell 426, is surrounded by a spectacular filamentary Halpha nebula. Deep Chandra X-ray imaging has revealed that the brighter outer filaments are also detected in soft X-rays. This can be due to conduction and mixing of the cold gas in the filaments with the hot, dense intracluster medium. We show the correspondence of the filaments in both wavebands and draw attention to the relationship of two prominent curved NW filaments to an outer, buoyant radio bubble seen as a hole in the X-ray image. There is a strong resemblance in the shape…
We present a Chandra observation of Abell 2052, a cooling flow cluster with a central cD that hosts the complex radio source 3C 317. The data reveal ``holes'' in the X-ray emission that are coincident with the radio lobes. The holes are surrounded by bright ``shells'' of X-ray emission. The data are consistent with the radio source displacing and compressing, and at the same time being confined by, the X-ray gas. The compression of the X-ray shells appears to have been relatively gentle and, at most, slightly transonic. The pressure in the X-ray gas (the shells and surrounding cooler gas) is a…
We report new EUV data on the cluster of galaxies Abell 1795. These data were taken well away from a detector defect which could have compromised earlier results on this cluster. Our new observations confirm the validity of the original data set. However, we find our results are strongly influenced by the variation of the telescope sensitivity over the field of view and upon the details of the subtraction of the EUV emission from the X-ray plasma. We investigate these effects using our new data and archival data on Abell 1795, Abell 2199 and the Coma cluster. When we use the appropriate correc…
We study the properties of superclusters detected in the Abell/ACO cluster catalogue. We identify the superclusters utilizing the `friend-of-friend' procedure, and then determine supercluster shapes by using the differential geometry approach. We find that the dominant supercluster morphological feature is filamentariness. We compare our Abell/ACO supercluster results with the corresponding ones generated from two different CDM cosmological models in order to investigate statistically which of the latter models best reproduces the observational results.
Using a large redshift survey covering 95 square degrees, we demonstrate that the infall region of Abell 2199 contains Abell 2197, one or two X-ray emitting groups, and up to five additional groups identified in redshift surveys. Our survey shows that the X-ray emitting systems, located at projected radii of $1.^\circ4, 1.^\circ9$, and $5.^\circ1$ (2.2, 3.1, and $8.0 h^{-1}$Mpc), are connected kinematically to A2199. A2197 is itself an optically rich cluster; its weak X-ray emission suggests that it is much less massive than A2199. The absence of a sharp peak in the infall pattern at the posit…
We present a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of Abell 2626 focused on the X-ray and radio interactions. Within the region of the radio mini-halo (~70 kpc), there are substructures which are probably produced by the central radio source and the cooling core. We find that there is no obvious correlation between the radio bars and the X-ray image. The morphology of Abell 2626 is more complex than that of the standard X-ray radio bubbles seen in other cool core clusters. Thus, Abell 2626 provides a challenge to models for the cooling flow -- radio source interaction. W…
We present X-ray spatial and spectral analysis of the Chandra data from the central 400 kpc (H0 = 50 km/s/Mpc) of the cluster of galaxies Abell 1795. The plasma temperature rises outwards by a factor of 3, whereas the iron abundance decreases by a factor of 4. The spatial distribution of Oxygen, Neon, Sulphur, Silicon and Iron shows that supernovae Type Ia dominate the metal enrichment process of the cluster plasma within the inner 150 kpc. Resolving both the gas density and temperature in 9 radial bins, we recover the gravitational mass density profile and show that it flattens within 100 kpc…
We present results from a BeppoSAX observation of the rich cluster Abell 2319. The broad band spectrum (2-50 keV) of the cluster can be adequately represented by an optically thin thermal emission model with a temperature of 9.6+/-0.3 keV and a metal abundance of 0.25+/-0.03 in solar units, and with no evidence of a hard X-ray excess in the PDS spectrum. From the upper limit to the hard tail component we derive a lower limit of ~0.04 \muG for the volume-averaged intracluster magnetic field. By performing spatially resolved spectroscopy in the medium energy band (2-10 keV), we find that the pro…
We present a detailed, multiwavelength study of the Abell 1068 galaxy cluster, and we use this data to test cooling and energy feedback models of galaxy clusters. Near ultraviolet and infrared images of the cluster show that the cD galaxy is experiencing star formation at a rate of ~20-70 M_o/yr over the past ~100 Myr. The dusty starburst is concentrated toward the nucleus of the cD galaxy and in filamentary structures projecting 60 kpc into its halo. The Chandra X-ray image presented in WMM reveals a steep temperature gradient that drops from roughly 4.8 keV beyond 120 kpc to roughly 2.3 keV …
We investigate the LF in the very relaxed cluster Abell 496. Our analysis is based on deep images obtained at CFHT with MegaPrime/MegaCam in four bands (ugri) covering a 1x1 deg2 region, which is centered on the cluster Abell 496 and extends to near its virial radius. The LFs are estimated by statistically subtracting a reference field taken as the mean of the 4 Deep fields of the CFHTLS survey. Background contamination is minimized by cutting out galaxies redder than the observed Red Sequence in the g-i versus i colour-magnitude diagram. In Abell 496, the global LFs show a faint-end slope alp…
Intercluster filaments negligibly contribute to the weak lensing signal in general relativity (GR), $γ_{N}\sim 10^{-4}-10^{-3}$. In the context of relativistic modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) introduced by Bekenstein, however, a single filament inclined by $\approx 45^\circ$ from the line of sight can cause substantial distortion of background sources pointing towards the filament's axis ($κ=γ=(1-A^{-1})/2\sim 0.01$); this is rigorous for infinitely long uniform filaments, but also qualitatively true for short filaments ($\sim 30$Mpc), and even in regions where the projected matter density …
We present 21 cm HI line observations of 5x1 square degrees centered on the local Abell cluster 1367 obtained as part of the Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey. One hundred sources are detected (79 new HI measurements and 50 new redshifts), more than half belonging to the cluster core and its infalling region. Combining the HI data with SDSS optical imaging we show that our HI selected sample follows scaling relations similar to the ones usually observed in optically selected samples. Interestingly all galaxies in our sample appear to have nearly the same baryon fraction independently of their …
We present a dynamical analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 1942 based on a set of 128 velocities obtained at the European Southern Observatory. Data on individual galaxies are presented and the accuracy of the determined velocities is discussed as well as some properties of the cluster. We have also made use of publicly available Chandra X-ray data. We obtained an improved mean redshift value z = 0.22513 \pm 0.0008 and velocity dispersion sigma = 908^{+147}_{-139} km/s. Our analysis indicates that inside a radius of ~1.5 h_{70}^{-1} Mpc (~7 arcmin) the cluster is well relaxed, without any rem…
Deep polarimetric Westerbork observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 2256 are presented, covering a frequency range of 325-377 MHz. The central halo source has a diameter of the order of 1.2 Mpc (18'), which is somewhat larger than at 1.4 GHz. With alpha=-1.61+/-0.04, the halo spectrum between 1.4 GHz and 22.25 MHz is less steep than previously thought. The centre of the ultra steep spectrum source in the eastern part of the cluster exhibits a spectral break near 400 MHz. It is estimated to be at least 51 million years old, but possibly older than 125 million years. A final measurement requir…
We present results from a spatially resolved spectral analysis of the merging cluster Abell 2256. The long integration time (135 ks) and the good spatial resolution of the MECS onboard BeppoSAX allow us to derive a new and substantially improved measurement of the temperature structure. We find that, within a central region of the cluster, where the effects of the merger are visible in the ROSAT surface brightness image, the azimuthally averaged projected temperature is remarkably flat; outside this region the projected temperature rapidly declines. The BeppoSAX data also shows clear evidence …
We present hydrodynamical calculations carried out with the 3D yguazu-a code of a precessing jet model, which interacts with a plane parallel wind. This scenario describes an extragalactic jet, in which the jet source is in motion with respect to the surrounding intra-cluster medium. From the numerical results, synthetic emission maps and spectra in X-ray band were obtained. We compare these predictions with observations of the radio jets emanating from the radio-galaxy 4C 26.42 (in the Abell 1795 galaxy cluster). We find that the general morphology of the radio jets can be described by a poin…
Using drift scan data, a new approach to determining surface brightness profiles, and techniques for detecting low surface brightness signals, we fit the light profile of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the rich cluster Abell 1651 out to 670 h^{-1} kpc. This radius is a significant fraction of the virial radius of the cluster (2 h^{-1} Mpc; Girardi et al. 1998), indicating that the sizes of the BCG and the cluster are comparable. We find that the profile is consistent with a de Vaucouleurs profile over the radial range probed. We also find that the integrated light profile of the BCG in …
We report on integral field spectrocopy observations, performed with the PPAK module of the PMAS spectrograph, covering a field-of-view of ~74''X64'' centered on the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 2218. A total of 43 objects were detected, 27 of them galaxies at the redshift of the cluster. We deblended and extracted the integrated spectra of each of the objects in the field using an adapted version of galfit for 3D spectroscopy (galfit3d). We use these spectra, in combination with morphological parameters derived from deep HST/ACS images, to study the stellar population and evolution of gal…
Wide-angle tail (WAT) radio sources are often found in the centers of galaxy clusters where intracluster medium (ICM) ram pressure may bend the lobes into their characteristic C-shape. We examine the low redshift (z=0.1035) cluster Abell 1446, host to the WAT radio source 1159+583. The cluster exhibits possible evidence for a small-scale cluster-subcluster merger as a cause of the WAT radio source morphology. This evidence includes the presence of temperature and pressure substructure along the line that bisects the WAT as well as a possible wake of stripped interstellar material or a disrupte…
Cold molecular gas is found in several clusters of galaxies (Edge, 2001, Salome' & Combes, 2003): single dish telescope observations in CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission lines have revealed the existence of large amounts of cold gas (up to ~10^11 Msol) in the central region of cooling flow clusters. We present here interferometric observations performed with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer in Abell 1795. Comparison with IRAM 30m data shows the cold gas detected is extended suggesting a cooling flow origin. The CO features identified are very similar to the structures observed in Halpha and …
Using CCD detectors onboard the forthcoming X-ray observatories Chandra and XMM, it is possible to devise a measurement of the absolute density of heavy elements in the hypothetical warm gas filling intercluster space. This gas may be the largest reservoir of baryonic matter in the Universe, but even its existence has not been proven observationally at low redshifts. The proposed measurement would make use of a unique filament of galaxy clusters spanning over 700 Mpc (0.1<z<0.2) along the line of sight in a small area of the sky in Aquarius. The surface density of Abell clusters there is more …
Using accurate distances to individual Virgo cluster galaxies obtained by the method of Surface Brightness Fluctuations, we show that Virgo's brightest ellipticals have a remarkably collinear arrangement in three dimensions. This axis, which is inclined by 10 to 15 degrees from the line of sight, can be traced to even larger scales where it appears to join a filamentary bridge of galaxies connecting Virgo to the rich cluster Abell 1367. The orientations of individual Virgo ellipticals also show some tendency to be aligned with the cluster axis, as does the jet of the supergiant elliptical M87.…
We present the analysis of a Chandra observation of the galaxy cluster Abell 133, which has a cooling flow core, a central radio source, and a diffuse, filamentary radio source which has been classified as a radio relic. The X-ray image shows that the core has a complex structure. The most prominent feature is a "tongue" of emission which extends from the central cD galaxy to the northwest and partly overlaps the radio relic. One possibility is that this tongue is produced by Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instabilities through the interaction between the cold gas around the cD galaxy and hot intraclus…
We present a detailed analysis of the cluster of galaxies \a4. The optical data include a redshift catalogue of 466 galaxies, out of which 274 belong to the main cluster and a CCD photometric catalogue in a much smaller region, with 239 and 610 galaxies in the V and R bands respectively. The X-ray analysis is based on an image obtained with the ROSAT PSPC. Besides Abell 496 itself, the velocity distribution along the line of sight shows the existence of at least four structures at different redshifts, one of them seeming to be a poor cluster at a velocity of 30083 km/s. The other of these stru…
We report a new analysis of diffuse EUV emission in clusters of galaxies. We find the cluster emission is strongly influenced by the variation of the telescope sensitivity over the field of view and upon the details of the subtraction of the EUV emission for the X-ray plasma. We investigate these effects on Abell 1795, Abell 2199, and the Coma cluster. When we use the appropriate correction factors, we find there is no evidence for any excess EUV emission in Abell 1795 or Abell 2199, However, we do find extended EUV emission in the Coma cluster and in the Virgo cluster using our new analysis p…
We investigate the supercluster shape properties of the all-sky observed (Abell/ACO) and simulated (Virgo data) cluster catalogues using an approach based on differential geometry. We reliably identify rich superclusters by applying percolation statistics to both observed and mock cluster populations, the latter being constructed following the observational requirements of the Abell/ACO sample extended out to $z_{\rm max}\leq 0.114$. We apply a set of shape diagnostics in order to study in a thorough way the morphological features of superclusters with $\geq 8$ cluster members. Results demonst…
We present an analysis of Chandra observations of the central regions of the cooling flow cluster Abell 2029. We find a number of X-ray filaments in the central 40 kpc, some of which appear to be associated with the currently active central radio galaxy. The outer southern lobe of the steep-spectrum radio source appears to be surrounded by a region of cool gas and is at least partially surrounded by a bright X-ray rim similar to that seen around radio sources in the cores of other cooling flow clusters. Spectroscopic fits show that the overall cluster emission is best fitted by either a two te…
To examine the evolution of the early-type galaxy population in the rich cluster Abell 2390 at z=0.23 we have gained spectroscopic data of 51 elliptical and lenticular galaxies with MOSCA at the 3.5 m telescope on Calar Alto Observatory. This investigation spans both a broad range in luminosity (-19.3>M_B>-22.3) and uses a wide field of view of 10'x10', therefore the environmental dependence of different formation scenarios can be analysed in detail as a function of radius from the cluster centre. Here we present results on the surface brightness modelling of galaxies where morphological and s…
