We present the results of the spectroscopic observations of HDE 226868, the optical counterpart to the black hole X-ray binary Cyg X-1, from 2001 to 2006. We analyze the variabilities of the two components in the complex H$α$ line: one P-Cygni shaped component which follows the motion of the supergiant and another emission component moving with an antiphase orbital motion relative to the supergiant, which is attributed to a focused-stellar wind. The results of KOREL disentangling of our spectra indicate that the focused stellar wind is responsible for the major part of the variability of the H$α$ emission line. The emission of the supergiant component had a small difference between the low/hard and high/soft states, while the focused wind component became strong in the low/hard state and weak in the high/soft state. The wind is nearly undisturbed by the X-ray photoionization during the low/hard state. However, during the high/soft state, the X-rays from the compact object could decelerate the line-driven wind and result in a high mass accretion rate, due to the effect of the X-ray photoionization. The X-ray illuminating could also change the temperature profile of the stellar wind and increase its temperature, and thus decrease the H$α$ emissivity of the wind, which could explain the H$α$ variabilities of Cyg X-1 during different X-ray states.
We present epoch 1996, high-quality radial velocity data for HDE 226868, the optical counterpart of Cygnus X-1. Combining our results with all published historical data, we have derived a new ephemeris for the system of HJD2450235.29 + n x 5.5998, which allows accurate orbital phase calculations to be made for any X-ray observations over the last 30 years. We find no evidence for any period change as has been suggested by Ninkov, Walker & Yang (1987). We discuss the shortcomings of previous work in establishing the period and orbital elements.
Calculations carried out to model the evolution of HDE 226868, under different assumptions about the stellar wind mass loss rate, provide robust limits on the present mass of the star. It has to be in the range 40 +- 5 solar masses if the distance to the system is in the range 1.95 to 2.35 kpc and the effective temperature of HDE 226868 in the range 30000 to 31000 K. Extending the possible intervals of these parameters to 1.8 to 2.35 kpc and 28000 to 32000 K, one gets for the mass of the star the range 40 +- 10 solar masses. Including into the analysis observational properties such as the prof…
We apply the IC e$^\pm$ pair cascade model in order to investigate the possible $γ$-ray emission features from another compact massive binary of the microquasar type, Cyg X-1. We conclude that the observational constraints at lower energies (from MeV to GeV) suggest that the spectrum of electrons injected in the jet is likely steeper than in other TeV $γ$-ray microquasars. The cascade $γ$-ray spectrum produced by electrons with such spectrum in Cyg X-1 should be below the sensitivities of the MAGIC and VERITAS class Cherenkov telescopes. However, if the electron spectrum is flatter, then the h…
Analysis of polarimetric observations of X-ray binary Cyg X-1/HDE 226868 including the data obtained by BTA-6m allows to estimate the magnetic field magnitude near the inner radius of the accretion disk. The magnetic field magnitude occurred to be $\sim 10^{8}$ G. For power law of radial dependence of magnetic field into an accretion disk we estimates the value of an index of power law. For the Cyg X-1/HDE 226868 system the value of this index appears non less then two. If one accepts as a characteristic scale of a magnetic field generation region the dyadosphere radius, one can estimate the c…
The star HDE 226868 known as an optical counterpart of the black hole candidate Cyg X-1 has been observed in H_alpha region using spectrograph at Ondrejov 2-m telescope. The orbital parameters are determined from HeI-line by means of the author's method of Fourier disentangling. Preliminary results are also presented of disentangling the H_alpha-line into a P-Cyg profile of the (optical) primary and an emission profile of the circumstellar matter (and a telluric component).
We present the discovery of OB type absorption lines superimposed to the emission line spectrum, and the first double-lined orbital elements for the massive Wolf-Rayet binary HDE 318016 (=WR 98), a spectroscopic binary in a circular orbit with a period of 47.825 days. The semiamplitudes of the orbital motion of the emission lines differ from line to line, indicating mass ratios between 1 and 1.7 for MWR/MOB.
The two stars that form the subject of this paper are both short-period double- lined eclipsing binaries having non-circular orbits despite their short periods. Although the HD type of HD 152028 is G0, the integrated spectral type of the system must actually be much earlier: the B-V colour index is only about 0.37 mag and the parallax indicates an integrated absolute magnitude as bright as +1.4 mag. A published photometric investigation suggests that the primary star exhibits delta Scuti pulsations, with a period of 0.1138 days. That period is not present in the radial velocities, but we have …
We have found strong selective emission of the N II 5000A complex in the spectrum of the LMC hypergiant HDE 269896, ON9.7 Ia$^+$. Since this object also has anomalously strong He II $λ$4686 emission for its spectral type, an unusually wide range of ionization in its extended atmosphere is indicated. The published model of this spectrum does not reproduce these emission features, but we show that increased nitrogen and helium abundances, together with small changes in other model parameters, can do so. The morphological and possible evolutionary relationships of HDE 269896, as illuminated by th…

We present analyses of a 50 ks observation of the supergiant X-ray binary system Cygnus X-1/HDE 226868 taken with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS). Cyg X-1 was in its spectrally hard state and the observation was performed during superior conjunction of the black hole, allowing for the spectroscopic analysis of the accreted stellar wind along the line of sight. A significant part of the observation covers X-ray dips as commonly observed for Cyg X-1 at this orbital phase, however, here we only analyze the high count rate non-dip spectrum. The full 0.5-10 keV con…
Using measured radial velocity data of nine double lined spectroscopic binary systems NSV 223, AB And, V2082 Cyg, HS Her, V918 Her, BV Dra, BW Dra, V2357 Oph, and YZ Cas, we find corresponding orbital and spectroscopic elements via the method introduced by Karami & Mohebi (2007a) and Karami & Teimoorinia (2007). Our numerical results are in good agreement with those obtained by others using more traditional methods.
The results of spectroscopic study of Ae Herbig star RR Tau are reported. The observations were carried out with a moderate resolution. In accordance with the presented data the Halpha line exhibits a double-peaked emission profile. The blue component is weaker than or equal to the red one. Variations of the Halpha equivalent width by a factor of 4 - 5 were found. The structure of this line also varies. On JD 2447148 a red absorption reversal of the Halpha profile was observed. The Hbeta spectral line exhibited both emission and absorption. On JD 2449664 the single-peak emission shifted to the…
We utilize high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra to perform a differential analysis of Fe abundances in the common proper-motion pair 16 Cyg A and B. We confirm that both stars are slightly metal-rich compared to the Sun, and we show for the first time that the primary is enhanced in Fe relative to the secondary by a significant amount. We find Delta[Fe/H]=+0.025\pm0.009. This tends to support the ``self-pollution'' scenario proposed by Gonzalez (1998), though lack of a complete understanding of small primordial metallicity variations among binaries and open cluster members prevents a …
We present the results of a spectroscopic campaign revealing that the non-thermal radio emitter Cyg OB2 #8A is an O6 + O5.5 binary system. We propose the very first orbital solution indicating a period of about 21.9 days. The system appears to be eccentric (0.24 +/- 0.04) and is likely seen under a rather low inclination angle. The mass ratio of the components is close to unity. The impact of the binarity of this star in the framework of our understanding of non-thermal radio emission from early-type stars is briefly discussed.
Optical observations of nova V1974 Cygni (Cygni 1992), spanning a 4 year period, have been used to study its spectroscopic evolution. The data cover a wavelength range from $\sim 3200 - 8000$ Åand follows the nebular evolutionary phase of the ejecta. We have modeled the integrated fluxes by means of the photoionization code CLOUDY. The models were run at a {\it fixed} abundance value for the most prominent elements (i.e. H, He, C, O, N, Ne, Fe, etc) over the entire time sequence. It is possible to constrain from this simple model some of the physical conditions of the gaseous emitting region, …
We present four epochs of high-resolution infrared spectroscopy of the peculiar X-ray binary Cygnus X-3. The observations cover quiescent, small flaring and outburst states of the system as defined by radio and X-ray monitoring. The underlying infrared spectrum of the source, as observed during radio and X-ray quiescence and small flaring states, is one of broad, weak HeII and NV emission. Spectral variability in this state is dominated by modulation at the 4.8 hr orbital period of the system. H-band spectra confirm the significant hydrogen depletion of the mass donor. The closest spectral mat…
We present results of a comprehensive study of the distribution of absorption dips with orbital phase in Cygnus X-1. Firstly, the distribution was obtained using archival data from all major X-ray observatories and corrected for the selection effect that phase zero (superior conjunction of the black hole) has been preferentially observed. Dip occurrence was seen to vary strongly with orbital phase ϕ, with a peak at ϕ~ 0.95, i.e. was not symmetric about phase zero. Secondly, the RXTE ASM has provided continuous coverage of the Low State of Cygnus X-1 since Sept. 1996, and we have selected dip d…
This paper is the first one in a series devoted to the study of the dynamics of the atmospheres of long-period variable stars. Results from a two-month-long monitoring of the Mira variables RT Cyg and X Oph around maximum light with the ELODIE spectrograph at the Haute-Provence Observatory are presented. The monitoring covers phases 0.80 to 1.16 for RT Cyg and phases 0.83 to 1.04 for X Oph. The cross-correlation profile of the spectrum of RT Cyg with a K0 III mask confirms that the absorption lines of RT Cyg in the optical domain appear double around maximum light. No line doubling was found i…
We present the results of a spectroscopic monitoring program (from 1998 to 2002) of the H-alpha emission strength in HDE 226868, the optical counterpart of the black hole binary, Cyg X-1. The H-alpha profiles consist of (1) a P Cygni component associated with the wind of the supergiant, (2) emission components that attain high velocity at the conjunctions and that probably form in enhanced outflows both towards and away from the black hole, and (3) an emission component that moves in anti-phase with the supergiant's motion. We argue that the third component forms in accreted gas near the black…
We present the result of three BeppoSAX observations of the X-ray binary pulsar A0535+26 in its quiescent state. The source is quite well detected up to 200 keV (6 sigma detection in the stronger observation). No Iron line is detected in the MECS data (3 sigma upper limit on its equivalent width of 150 eV). There is evidence of a soft excess below 2 keV. Pulsation is detected in all energy bands up to 10 keV, with a pulsed fraction of ~ 0.5, not varying with energy. There is a marginal detection (4 sigma) of a cyclotron resonance feature (CRF) at 118 +/- 20 keV in the PDS spectrum. During the …
We present a spectroscopic survey of the rich, X-ray selected, galaxy cluster CL 1358+6245 at z=0.328. When our 173 new multi-slit spectra of cluster galaxies are combined with data from the literature, we produce a catalog of 232 cluster members in a region 10'x11' (3.5 Mpc x 3.8 Mpc) surrounding the brightest cluster galaxy. These data are used to study the structure and dynamics of the cluster and to examine the radial and velocity distributions as a function of spectral type. We classify the spectral types of the cluster members according to the strengths of the Balmer absorption lines (Hd…
[abridged] We present the analysis of the spectroscopic and photometric catalogues of 11 X-ray luminous clusters at z=0.07-0.16 from the Las Campanas / Anglo-Australian Telescope Rich Cluster Survey. Our spectroscopic dataset consists of over 1600 galaxy cluster members, of which two thirds are outside r_200. We assign cluster membership using a detailed mass model and expand on our previous work on the cluster colour-magnitude relation where membership was inferred statistically. We confirm that the modal colours of galaxies on the colour magnitude relation become progressively bluer with inc…
The star Cyg OB2 No. 9 is a well-known non-thermal radio emitter. Recent theoretical work suggests that all such O-stars should be in a binary or a multiple system. However, there is no spectroscopic evidence of a binary component. Re-analysis of radio observations from the VLA of this system over 25 years has revealed that the non-thermal emission varies with a period of 2.35+-0.02 yr. This is interpreted as a strong suggestion of a binary system, with the non-thermal emission arising in a wind-collision region. We derived some preliminary orbital parameters for this putative binary and revis…
We present the results of an intensive spectroscopic campaign in the optical waveband revealing that Cyg OB2 #8A is an O6 + O5.5 binary system with a period of about 21.9 d. Cyg OB2 #8A is a bright X-ray source, as well as a non-thermal radio emitter. We discuss the binarity of this star in the framework of a campaign devoted to the study of non-thermal emitters, from the radio waveband to gamma-rays. In this context, we attribute the non-thermal radio emission from this star to a population of relativistic electrons, accelerated by the shock of the wind-wind collision. These relativistic elec…
Brief HST/STIS spectroscopic snapshot exposures of the cataclysmic variables 1RXSJ232953.9+062814, CE315, BZ UMa and EY Cyg reveal very large NV/CIV line flux ratios, similar to those observed in AE Aqr. Such anomalous line flux ratios have so far been observed in 10 systems, and presumably reflect a different composition of the accreted material compared to the majority of cataclysmic variables. We discuss the properties of this small sample in the context of the recent proposal by Schenker et al. (2002) that a significant fraction of the present-day population of cataclysmic variables may ha…
Gamma-ray and microwave observations of the Cygnus region reveal an intense signal of 1.809 MeV line emission, attributed to radioactive decay of 26Al, that is closely correlated with 53 GHz free-free emission, originating from the ionised interstellar medium. We modelled both emissions using a multi-wavelength evolutionary synthesis code for massive star associations that we applied to the known massive star populations in Cygnus. For all OB associations and young open clusters in the field, we determined the population age, distance, and richness as well as the uncertainties in all these qua…
We present intermediate resolution near-IR long-slit spectroscopic data for the nearby radio galaxy Cygnus A (3C 405) (obtained with the NIRSPEC spectrograph on the Keck II telescope). The data reveal considerable complexity in the near-IR emission line kinematics, including line splittings of 200-350 km/s and a mixture of narrow (FWHM ~200 km/s) and broad (FWHM ~700 km/s) components to the emission lines. It is notable that the Pa alpha and H2 emission lines show markedly different kinematics, both on- and off-nucleus. Overall, the data provide evidence for the presence of a giant molecular c…
New optical MK classification spectra have been obtained for 14 OB star candidates identified by Comeron et al. (2002) and presumed to be possible members of the Cyg OB2 cluster. All 14 candidate OB stars observed are indeed early-type stars, strongly suggesting the remaining 31 candidates identified by Comeron et al. are also early-type stars. However, as many as half of the new stars appear to be significantly older than the previously studied optical cluster, making their membership in Cyg OB2 suspect. Despite this, the recognition of Cyg OB2 being a more massive and extensive star cluster …
We present a preliminary analysis of the 1--10 keV spectrum of the massive X-ray binary Cyg X-3, obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The source reveals a richly detailed discrete emission spectrum, with clear signatures of photoionization-driven excitation. Among the spectroscopic novelties in the data are the first astrophysical detections of a number of He-like 'triplets' (Si, S, Ar) with emission line ratios characteristic of photoionization equilibrium, fully resolved narrow radiative recombination continua of Mg, Si, and S, the…
We present results obtained from near-infrared JHK spectroscopic observations of novae V2491 Cyg and V597 Pup in the early declining phases of their 2007 and 2008 outbursts respectively. In both objects, the spectra displayed emission lines of HI, OI, HeI and NI. In V597 Pup, the HeI lines were found to strengthen rapidly with time. Based on the observed spectral characteristics, both objects are classified as He/N novae. We have investigated the possibility of V2491 Cyg being a recurrent nova as has been suggested. By studying the temporal evolution of the line widths in V2491 Cyg it appears …
Context. In quiescence, the proposed optical counterpart to the neutron star low mass X-ray binary 4U 2129+47 (V1727 Cyg) shows a spectrum consistent with a late F-type subgiant and no radial velocity variations on the 5.24 hour binary period. This could imply that V1727 Cyg is a chance line of sight interloper. Radial velocity measurements, however, showed evidence for a longer term ~40 km/s shift, which suggested that 4U 2129+47 could be a hierarchical triple system, with the F-type star in a wide orbit about the inner low mass X-ray binary. Aims. In order to confirm the long-term radial vel…
Low- and medium resolution spectra of the fast nova, Nova (V1494) Aql 1999 No.2 obtained approximately 6, 7, 19 and 28 days after the maximum brightness are presented and discussed. The spectrum covering the whole optical range at day 6 shows the principal plus diffuse-enhanced spectrum. The presence of strong Fe II multiplets with P-Cyg profiles suggest that V1494 Aql belongs to the ``Fe II'' class defined by Williams (1992). The medium-resolution profiles (lambda/Delta lambda \approx 7000) of the Hgamma and Hdelta lines show well-defined sharp absorption features with the same radial velocit…
We have analyzed high spatial, moderate spectral resolution observations of Eta Carinae obtained with the STIS from 1998.0 to 2004.3. The spectra show prominent P-Cygni lines in H I, Fe II and He I which are complicated by blends and contamination by nebular emission and absorption along the line-of-sight toward the observer. All lines show phase and species dependent variations in emission and absorption. For most of the cycle the He I emission is blueshifted relative to the H I and Fe II P-Cygni emission lines, which are approximately centered at system velocity. The blueshifted He I absorpt…
Aims: To investigate the spectra and the evolutionary stages of two peculiar emission-line stars: RJHA 49 and SS73 21. Methods: We used low and high resolution optical data. Line identifications and measurements were performed for several features in their spectra. Results: For each object, we have derived the extinction and the excitation temperature from a set of [Fe II] lines, and the electron density from [N II] lines. For RJHA 49, no detailed spectroscopic study was done so far. Regarding SS73 21, our low resolution spectrum have confirmed the main characteristics found in previous works.…
We present new high-resolution (R=40000) spectroscopic observations of 18 bright northern Cepheids carried out at David Dunlap Observatory, in 1997. The measurements mainly extend those of presented in Paper I adding three more stars (AW Per, SV Vul, T Mon). The spectra were obtained in the interval of 5900 A and 6660 A. New radial velocities determined with the cross-correlation technique and the bisector technique are presented. We found systematic differences between the spectroscopic and CORAVEL-type measurements as large as 1-3 km/s in certain phases. We performed Baade-Wesselink analysis…
We present Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) observations of a Balmer filament in the northeast region of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant. The data consist of one spectrum obtained through the 30"x30" (LWRS) aperture and three spectra at adjacent positions obtained through the 4"x20" (MDRS) aperture. The nonradiative shocks in the region giving rise to these faint optical filaments produce strong OVI 1032,1038 emission, which is detected in all the spectra. The OVI emission is resolved by FUSE into a strong component centered at 0 km/s, and weaker components centered at +/- 140 k…
The eclipsing and double-lined spectroscopic binary system V453 Cygni consists of two early B-type stars, one of which is nearing the terminal age main sequence and one which is roughly halfway through its main sequence lifetime. Accurate measurements of the masses and radii of the two stars are available, which makes a detailed abundance analysis both more interesting and more precise than for isolated stars. We have reconstructed the spectra of the individual components of V453 Cyg from the observed composite spectra using the technique of spectral disentangling. From these disentangled spec…
We have performed simultaneous X-ray and optical spectroscopic observations of the Low Mass X-ray Binary Cygnus X-2. We have used a new data system attached to the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph instrument on Keck II to obtain spectra with a mean time resolution of 72.075 milliseconds, simultaneous with pointed X-ray observations using the PCA onboard XTE. In this paper, we have analysed the variability in both wavebands on timescales of 16 seconds. During our observations Cygnus X-2 covered all three branches of the Z-curve, allowing us to study how the changes in X-ray spectral state af…
The properties of the early-type binary Cyg OB2 #5 have been debated for many years and spectroscopic and photometric investigations yielded conflicting results. We have attempted to constrain the physical properties of the binary by collecting new optical and X-ray observations. We find that the orbital period of the system slowly changes though we are unable to discriminate between several possible explanations of this trend. The best fit solution of the continuum light curve reveals a contact configuration with the secondary star being significantly brighter and hotter on its leading side f…
We present results of our detailed theoretical study of the observed orbital modulation of the radio emission in Cyg X-1. The modulation occurs due to free-free absorption in the wind from the companion star varying with the orbital phase, and our results put strong constraints on the spatial distribution of the jet radio emission at the frequencies of 2-15 GHz. A crucial role in enhancing the asymmetry of the wind absorption suffered by the jet emission is played by the irradiation by X-rays emitted in the vicinity of the black hole. This increases the wind temperature by more than order of m…
