In this article we report the results of detailed interacting boson model calculations with configuration mixing for the neutron-deficient Pb isotopes. Calculated energy levels and $B(E2)$ values for $^{188-196}$Pb are discussed and some care is suggested concerning the current classification on the basis of level systematics of the $4_1^+$ and $6_1^+$ states in $^{190-194}$Pb. Furthermore, quadrupole deformations are extracted for $^{186-196}$Pb and the mixing between the different families (0p-0h, 2p-2h, and 4p-4h) is discussed in detail. Finally, the experimental and the theoretical level systematics are compared.
We calculate the spectra for the neutron deficient Sn isotopes with mass numbers from A=102 to A=108, using standard many-body techniques. The G-matrix used in the perturbative expansion was calculated using the Bonn potentials. A good agreement with the available data is obtained.
Recent mass measurements show a substantial weakening of the binding energy difference delta_{2p} (Z,N) = E(Z-2,N) - 2 E(Z,N) + E(Z+2,N) in the neutron-deficient Pb isotopes. As delta_{2p} is often attributed to the size of the proton magic gap, it might be speculated that the reduction in delta_{2p} is related to a weakening of the spherical Z=82 shell. We demonstrate that the observed trend is described quantitatively by self-consistent mean-field models in terms of deformed ground states of Hg and Po isotopes.
Gamow-Teller strength distributions and beta-decay half-lives in neutron-deficient Kr and Sr isotopes are investigated within a deformed quasiparticle random phase approximation. The approach is based on a selfconsistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean field with pairing correlations and residual separable particle-hole and particle-particle forces. A simple two-level model is used to mix the nuclear shapes into the physical ground state. Good agreement with experiment is found with shape mixing coefficients which are consistent with those obtained phenomenologically from mixing of rotational bands.
We study shape coexistence and low-energy excitation spectra in neutron-deficient Pb isotopes using configuration mixing of angular-momentum and particle-number projected self-consistent mean-field states. The same Skyrme interaction SLy6 is used everywhere in connection with a density-dependent zero-range pairing force.
We study the low-lying collective excitation spectra of the neutron-deficient lead isotopes Pb182-Pb194 by performing a configuration mixing of angular-momentum and particle-number projected self-consistent mean-field states. The same Skyrme interaction SLy6 is used supplemented by a density-dependent zero-range pairing force. This study supports the interpretation of spectra made on the grounds of more schematic models in terms of coexisting spherical, oblate, prolate and superdeformed prolate structures. The model qualitatively reproduces the variation of the spectra with neutron number. Our…
We study Gamow-Teller strength distributions in the neutron-deficient even isotopes (184-194)Pb in a search for signatures of deformation. The microscopic formalism used is based on a deformed quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) approach, which involves a self-consistent quasiparticle deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock (HF) basis and residual spin-isospin forces in both the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. By analyzing the sensitivity of the Gamow-Teller strength distributions to the various ingredients in the formalism, we conclude that the beta-decay of these isotopes coul…
The low-lying collective states in Sn isotopes are studied by a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian with parameters determined from the triaxial relativistic mean-field calculations using the PC-PK1 energy density functional. The systematics for both the excitation energies of $2^+_1$ states and $B(E2;0^+_1\to 2^+_1)$ values are reproduced rather well, in particular, the enhanced E2 transitions in the neutron-deficient Sn isotopes with N<66. We show that the gradual degeneracy of neutron levels 1g7/2 and 2d5/2 around the Fermi surface leads to the increase of level density and consequently…
Total Routhian Surface (TRS) calculations have been performed to investigate shape coexistence and evolution in neutron-deficient krypton isotopes ${}^{72,74,76}$Kr. The ground-state shape is found to change from oblate in ${}^{72}$Kr to prolate in ${}^{74,76}$Kr, in agreement with experimental data. Quadrupole deformations of the ground states and coexisting $0^{+}_{2}$ states as well as excitation energies of the latter are also well reproduced. While the general agreement between calculated moments of inertia and those deduced from observed spectra confirms the prolate nature of the low-lyi…
Ground and isomeric states of the neutron-deficient odd-$A$ isotopes $^{183}$Hg, $^{185}$Hg, and $^{187}$Hg are described from a microscopic calculation based on a self-consistent, axially-deformed Hartree-Fock mean field with the Skyrme functional and pairing within BCS approximation. For each equilibrium shape and different odd-neutron states, results on mean square charge radii and magnetic dipole moments are given and analyzed in the context of their sensitivity to the nuclear deformation and to the spin and parity. Spin-isospin correlations within proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase…
The effect of nuclear deformation on the energy distributions of the Gamow-Teller strength is studied in neutron-deficient Hg, Pb, and Po even isotopes. The theoretical framework is based on a self-consistent deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock mean field with pairing correlations between like nucleons in BCS approximation and residual spin-isospin interactions treated in the proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation. After a systematic study of the Gamow-Teller strength distributions in the low excitation energy region, relevant for beta-decay, we have identified the best candidates to…
We discuss shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient Kr72-Kr78 isotopes in the framework of configuration mixing calculations of particle-number and angular-momentum projected axial mean-field states obtained from self-consistent calculations with the Skyrme interaction SLy6 and a density-dependent pairing interaction. While our calculation reproduces qualitatively and quantitatively many of the global features of these nuclei, such as coexistence of prolate and oblate shapes, their strong mixing at low angular momentum, and the deformation of collective bands, the ordering of our calculated …
Within the dinuclear system model, unknown neutron-deficient isotopes Np, Pu, Am, Cm, Bk, Cf, Es, Fm are investigated in $^{40}$Ca, $^{36,40}$Ar, $^{32}$S, $^{28}$Si,$^{24}$Mg induced fusion-evaporation reactions and multinucleon transfer reactions with radioactive beams $^{59}$Cu,$^{69}$As,$^{90}$Nb,$^{91}$Tc, $^{94}$Rh, $^{105,110}$Sn, $^{118}$Xe induced with $^{238}$U near Coulomb barrier energies. The production cross sections of compound nuclei in the fusion-evaporation reactions and fragments yields in the multinucleon transfer reactions are calculated within the model. A statistical app…
A comprehensive study of various ground-state properties of neutron-rich and neutron-deficient Mg isotopes with $A$=20-36 is performed in the framework of the self-consistent deformed Skyrme-Hartree-Fock plus BCS method. The correlation between the skin thickness and the characteristics related with the density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy is investigated for this isotopic chain following the theoretical approach based on the coherent density fluctuation model and using the Brueckner energy-density functional. The results of the calculations show that the behavior of the nuclear c…
The multinucleon transfer reaction in the collisions of $^{40}$Ca+$^{124}$Sn at $E_{\textrm{c.m.}}=128.5$ MeV is investigated by using the improved quantum molecular dynamics model. The measured angular distributions and isotopic distributions of the products are reproduced reasonably well by the calculations. The multinucleon transfer reactions of $^{40}$Ca+$^{112}$Sn, $^{58}$Ni+$^{112}$Sn, $^{106}$Cd+$^{112}$Sn, and $^{48}$Ca+$^{112}$Sn are also studied. It shows that the combinations of neutron-deficient projectile and target are advantageous to produce the exotic neutron-deficient nuclei n…
The newly developed multi-quasiparticle triaxial projected shell-model approach is employed to study the high-spin band structures in neutron-deficient even-even Ce- and Nd-isotopes. It is observed that gamma-bands are built on each intrinsic configuration of the triaxial mean-field deformation. Due to the fact that a triaxial configuration is a superposition of several K-states, the projection from these states results in several low-lying bands originating from the same intrinsic configuration. This generalizes the well-known concept of the surface gamma-oscillation in deformed nuclei based …
We have investigated the ground-state structures of even-even neutron-deficient isotopes of Hg and Pb nuclei within the framework of a deformed relativistic mean field formalism for a number of commonly used parameter sets, namely NL1, NL3, NL-SH, NL-RA1 and TM1. The ground states of a bunch of Hg and Pb-isotopes towards the proton-dripline are found to be deformed for all the forces, with a constant pairing gap. The small differences in the ground- and the first-excited state binding energies predict a sea of low-lying excited states, and hence of shape co-existence, for both the Hg and Pb nu…
We present systematic calculations of the properties of 11- isomers in neutron-deficient 184-198Pb and 188-200Po. These states are based on the proton (h9/2 i13/2)_{K = 11-} configuration. They are calculated in the framework of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method with a Skyrme interaction and density-dependent pairing force. The energies and deformations of the 11- states are compared to those of the intruder 0+ states in both Pb and Po isotopes. In the most neutron-deficient Po isotopes, the calculations predict, below a weakly oblate 11- state, another oblate 11- state which is even more def…
The evolution of quadrupole and octupole collectivity in neutron-deficient Xe, Ba, Ce, and Nd nuclei near the "octupole magic" neutron number $N=56$ is investigated within the mapped $sdf$-IBM framework. Microscopic input is obtained via quadrupole and octupole constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations, based on the parametrization D1M of the Gogny energy density functional. Octupole-deformed mean-field ground states are predicted for Ba and Ce isotopes near $N=56$. Excitation energies of positive- and negative-parity states as well as electric transition rates are computed with wave fu…

Neutron-deficient krypton isotopes are of particular interest due to the coexistence of oblate and prolate shapes in low-lying states and the transition of ground-state from one dominate shape to another as a function of neutron number. A detailed interpretation of these phenomena in neutron-deficient Kr isotopes requires the use of a method going beyond a mean-field approach that permits to determine spectra and transition probabilities. The aim of this work is to provide a systematic calculation of low-lying state in the even-even 68-86Kr isotopes and to understand the shape coexistence phen…
In-source resonant ionization laser spectroscopy of the even-$A$ polonium isotopes $^{192-210,216,218}$Po has been performed using the $6p^37s$ $^5S_2$ to $6p^37p$ $^5P_2$ ($λ=843.38$ nm) transition in the polonium atom (Po-I) at the CERN ISOLDE facility. The comparison of the measured isotope shifts in $^{200-210}$Po with a previous data set allows to test for the first time recent large-scale atomic calculations that are essential to extract the changes in the mean-square charge radius of the atomic nucleus. When going to lighter masses, a surprisingly large and early departure from spherici…
A three-configuration mixing calculation is performed in the context of the interacting boson model with the aim to describe recently observed collective bands built on low-lying $0^+$ states in neutron-deficient lead isotopes. The configurations that are included correspond to the regular, spherical states as well as two-particle two-hole and four-particle four-hole excitations across the Z=82 shell gap.
The low-energy spectra, electric quadrupole transitions and moments for the germanium isotopes are studied in the formalism of the IBM-2 with configuration mixing. The calculated observables reproduce well the available experimental information, including the newly obtained data for radioactive neutron-rich 78, 80, 82 Ge isotopes. A geometric interpretation of the model was established using a matrix formulation. The two energy surfaces determined after mixing carry information about the deformation parameters of the nucleus. Tor the even-even Ge isotopes the results are consistent with the sh…
Shell model calculations are done to study the structure of neutron-rich carbon isotopes. For both even-A and odd-A neutron-rich carbon isotopes, the energy levels are strongly affected by the configuration mixing of valence neutrons. The calculated energy levels in the nucleus $^{17}$C are significantly improved compared with experimental values when the model space of the three valence neutrons is enlarged from pure $ν(0d_{5/2})^{3}$ configuration to full $sd$ space. We also investigate the configuration mixing effect on the $B(E2)$ values in even-even nuclei $^{16-20}$C.
We study the oblate-prolate shape mixing in the low-lying states of proton-rich Kr isotopes using the five-dimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian. The collective Hamiltonian is derived microscopically by means of the CHFB (constrained Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov) + Local QRPA (quasiparticle random phase approximation) method, which we have developed recently on the basis of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate method. The results of the numerical calculation show the importance of large-amplitude collective vibrations in the triaxial shape degree of freedom and rotational eff…
The isotopic dependence of the complete fusion (capture) cross section is analyzed in the reactions $^{130,132,134,136,138,140,142,144,146,148,150}$Xe+$^{48}$Ca with stable and radioactive beams. It is shown for the first time that the very neutron-rich nuclei $^{186-191}$W can be reached with relatively large cross sections by complete fusion reactions with radioactive ion beams at incident energies near the Coulomb barrier. A comparison between the complete fusion and fragmentation reactions for the production of neutron-rich W and neutron-deficient Rn isotopes is performed.
The evolution of shapes and low-energy shape coexistence is analyzed in neutron-deficient Nd and Sm nuclei, using a five-dimensional quadrupole collective Hamiltonian (5DCH). Deformation energy surfaces, calculated with the relativistic energy density functional PC-PK1 and a separable finite-range pairing interaction, exhibit a transition from spherical shapes near $N=80$, to $γ-$soft shapes, and to prolate deformed minima in lighter isotopes. The corresponding 5DCH model calculation, based on the self-consistent mean-field potentials, reproduces the empirical isotopic trend of characteristic …
Background: The Po, Pb, Hg, and Pt region is known for the presence of coexisting structures that correspond to different particle-hole configurations in the Shell Model language or equivalently to nuclear shapes with different deformation. Purpose: We intend to study the configuration mixing phenomenon in the Hg isotopes and to understand how different observables are influenced by it. Method: We study in detail a long chain of mercury isotopes, $^{172-200}$Hg, using the interacting boson model with configuration mixing. The parameters of the Hamiltonians are fixed through a least square fit …
Pion energy spectra are presented for central collisions of neutron-rich 132Sn+124Sn and neutron-deficient 108Sn+112Sn systems using simulations with Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model. These calculations, which incorporate isospin-dependent mean field potentials for relevant baryons and mesons, display a sensitivity to the pion spectra that could allow significant constraints on the density dependence of the symmetry energy and its mean field potential at supra-saturation densities. The predicted sensitivity increases with the isospin asymmetry of the total system and decreases with …
The oblate-prolate shape coexisting/mixing phenomena in proton-rich 68,70,72Se are investigated by means of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method. The one-dimensional collective path and the collective Hamiltonian describing the large-amplitude shape vibration are derived in a fully microscopic way. The excitation spectra, B(E2) and spectroscopic quadrupole moments are calculated by requantizing the collective Hamiltonian and solving the collective Schroedinger equation. The basic properties of the coexisting two rotational bands in low-lying states of these nuclei …
In the present study, we have investigated the impact of the tensor force on fission paths, in particular the symmetric and asymmetric barriers in 230 Th, 226 Th, 222 Th and 216 Th isotopes which display an asymmetric to symmetric fission transition. This analysis has been performed within the HFB approach with (Q 20 ,Q 30 ,Q 40 ) as collective variable constraints, using the D1ST2a Gogny+tensor term interaction and comparing to the standard D1S Gogny interaction results. The effects from the tensor term on the potential energy surface landscape, and especially on barrier heights and its topol…
Gamow-Teller and Fermi transitions are considered in a HF+BCS+pnQRPA theoretical framework. We show here how Gamow-Teller strength distributions can be used in a search for signatures of nuclear deformation in neutron deficient Pb, Hg and Po isotopes, as well as how Fermi transitions allow us to quantify isospin mixing in some even Kr isotopes around N=Z.
A realistic shell-model study is performed for neutron-deficient tin isotopes up to mass A=108. All shell-model ingredients, namely two-body matrix elements, single-particle energies, and effective charges for electric quadrupole transition operators, have been calculated by way of the many-body perturbation theory, starting from a low-momentum interaction derived from the high-precision CD-Bonn free nucleon-nucleon potential. The focus has been put on the enhanced quadrupole collectivity of these nuclei, which is testified by the observed large B(E2;0+ -> 2+)s. Our results evidence the crucia…
We investigate the emergence and evolution of shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient Lead isotopes within the interacting boson model (IBM) plus configuration mixing with microscopic input based on the Gogny energy density functional (EDF). The microscopic potential energy surface obtained from the constrained self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov method employing the Gogny-D1M EDF is mapped onto the coherent-state expectation value of the configuration-mixing IBM Hamiltonian. In this way, the parameters of the IBM Hamiltonian are fixed for each of the three relevant configurations (sphe…
Background: A global description of the ground-state properties of nuclei in a wide mass range in a unified manner is desirable not only for understanding exotic nuclei but for providing nuclear data for applications. Purpose: We demonstrate the KIDS functional describes the ground states appropriately with respect to the existing data and predictions for a possible application of the functional to all the nuclei by taking Nd isotopes as examples. Method: The Kohn-Sham-Bogoliubov equation is solved for the Nd isotopes with the neutron numbers ranging from 60 to 160 by employing the KIDS functi…
Weak decay rates under stellar density and temperature conditions holding at the rapid proton capture process are studied in neutron-deficient medium-mass waiting point nuclei extending from Ni up to Sn. Neighboring isotopes to these waiting point nuclei are also included in the analysis. The nuclear structure part of the problem is described within a deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock + BCS + QRPA approach, which reproduces not only the beta-decay half-lives but also the available Gamow-Teller strength distributions, measured under terrestrial conditions. The various sensitivities of the decay rate…
The role of intruder configurations in the description of energy spectra and B(E2) values in the Pt region is analyzed. In particular, we study the differences between Interacting Boson Model calculations with or without the inclusion of intruder states in the even Pt nuclei $^{172-194}$Pt. As a result, it shows that for the description of a subset of the existing experimental data, i.e., energy spectra and absolute B(E2) values up to an excitation energy of about 1.5 MeV, both approaches seem to be equally valid. We explain these similarities between both model spaces through an appropriate m…
The interplay between the collective dynamics of the quadrupole and octupole deformation degree of freedom is discussed in a series of Sm and Gd isotopes both at the mean field level and beyond, including parity symmetry restoration and configuration mixing. Physical properties like negative parity excitation energies, E1 and E3 transition probabilities are discussed and compared to experimental data. Other relevant intrinsic quantities like dipole moments, ground state quadrupole moments or correlation energies associated to symmetry restoration and configuration mixing are discussed. For the…
In this paper, we have considered the interplay between phase transitions and configuration mixing of intruder excitations in the 118-128Te isotopes. A transitional interacting boson model Hamiltonian in both IBM-1 and IBM-2 versions which are based on affine Lie Algebra are employed to describe the evolution from spherical to deformed gamma unstable shapes along the chain of Te isotopes. The excitation energies, B(E0) and B(E2) transition rates are rather well reproduced in comparison with experimental counterparts when the weight of SO(6) limit is increased in Hamiltonian. Also our results s…
We perform simultaneous analysis of (1) matter radii, (2) $B(E2; 0^+ \rightarrow 2^+ )$ transition probabilities, and (3) excitation energies, $E(2^+)$ and $E(4^+)$, for $^{24-40}$Mg by using the beyond mean-field (BMF) framework with angular-momentum-projected configuration mixing with respect to the axially symmetric $β_2$ deformation with infinitesimal cranking. The BMF calculations successfully reproduce all of the data for $r_{\rm m}$, $B(E2)$, and $E(2^+)$ and $E(4^+)$, indicating that it is quite useful for data analysis, particularly for low-lying states. We also discuss the absolute v…
The quadrupole deformation properties of the ground and low-lying excited states of the even-even Magnesium isotopes with N ranging from 8 to 28 have been studied in the framework of the angular momentum projected generator coordinate method with the Gogny force. It is shown that the N=8 neutron magic number is preserved (in a dynamical sense) in \nuc{20}{Mg} leading to a spherical ground state. For the magic numbers N=20 and N=28 this is not the case and prolate deformed ground states are obtained. The method yields values of the two neutron separation energies which are in much better agreem…
We study the role of configuration mixing in the heavier even-even isotopes of Argon. We begin by limiting the configurations of the even-even Ar isotopes to $(d_{3/2}^2)_π$ $(f_{7/2}^n)_ν$. There, due to the particular location in this shell model space of $^{40}$Ar and $^{44}$Ar, we find that the spectra, B(E2)'s and magnetic moments of these two nuclei are identical. Any deviation from this equality is direct evidence of configuration mixing. In a larger shell model space there are significant differences between these two nuclei, with $^{44}$Ar being more collective. We also consider other…
We intend to provide a consistent description of the even-even Hg isotopes, 172-200Hg, using the interacting boson model including configuration mixing. We pay special attention to the description of the shape of the nuclei and to its connection with the shape coexistence phenomenon.
The Coriolis matrix elements responsible for mixing of the $1^+ K=1$ and $1^+ K=0$ states are calculated in the framework of the Quasiparticle Phonon Model for several Gd and Dy isotopes. In many considered cases these matrix elements are equal to several tens of keV and are comparable with energy distances between the mixed levels. The results obtained indicates that Gd isotopes could be more suitable for finding deviations from Alaga rules in M1 transitions from $1^+$ state to the states of the ground band.
Accounting for Coriolis mixing of experimentally known rotational bands with $K^π< 3^+$, non-adiabatic effects in energy and electric characteristics of excited states are investigated, within phenomenological model. The energy and wave function structure of excited states are calculated. The finding reveals that the bands mixing has been found to have considerable impact on the wave function of low-lying states $0^+$ and $2^+$ bands. In addition, the probabilities of $E2$-- transitions have been calculated. The values from calculations of $B(E2)$-- transitions from $0_2^+$, $0_3^+$, $2_1^+$, …
We have performed shell model calculations for neutron deficient even $^{102-108}$Sn and odd $^{103-107}$Sn isotopes in $sdg_{7/2}h_{11/2}$ model space using two different interactions. The first set of interaction is due to Brown {\it et al.} and second is due to Hoska {\it et al}. The calculations have been performed using doubly magic $^{100}$Sn as core and valence neutrons are distributed over the single particle orbits 1$g_{7/2}$, 2$d_{5/2}$, 2$d_{3/2}$, 3$s_{1/2}$ and 1$h_{11/2}$. In more recent experimental work for $^{101}$Sn [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105} (2010) 162502], the g.s. is pred…
We investigate the roles of deformation on the giant monopole resonance (GMR), particularly the mixing of the giant quadrupole resonance (GQR) and the effects of the neutron excess in the well-deformed nuclei around $^{110}$Zr and in the drip-line nuclei around $^{140}$Zr by means of the deformed quasiparticle-random-phase-approximation employing the Skyrme and the local pairing energy-density functionals. It is found that the isoscalar (IS) GMR has a two-peak structure, the lower peak of which is associated with the mixing between the ISGMR and the $K^π=0^{+}$ component of the ISGQR. The tran…
The evolution of the total energy surface and the nuclear shape in the isotopic chain $^{172-194}$Pt are studied in the framework of the interacting boson model, including configuration mixing. The results are compared with a self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculation using the Gogny-D1S interaction and a good agreement between both approaches shows up. The evolution of the deformation parameters points towards the presence of two different coexisting configurations in the region 176 $\leq$ A $\leq$ 186.
Background: The lead region, Po, Pb, Hg, and Pt, shows up the presence of coexisting structures having different deformation and corresponding to different particle-hole configurations in the Shell Model language. Purpose: We intend to study the importance of configuration mixing in the understanding of the nuclear structure of even-even Po isotopes, where the shape coexistence phenomena are not clear enough. Method: We study in detail a long chain of polonium isotopes, 190-208Po, using the interacting boson model with configuration mixing (IBM-CM). We fix the parameters of the Hamiltonians th…
The recently developed structure model that uses the generator coordinate method to perform configuration mixing of angular-momentum projected wave functions, generated by constrained self-consistent relativistic mean-field calculations for triaxial shapes (3DAMP+GCM), is applied in a systematic study of ground states and low-energy collective states in the even-even magnesium isotopes $^{20-40}$Mg. Results obtained using a relativistic point-coupling nucleon-nucleon effective interaction in the particle-hole channel, and a density-independent $δ$-interaction in the pairing channel, are compar…
We study the role of intruder states and shape coexistence in the even-even $^{190-206}$Po isotopes, through an interacting boson model with configuration mixing calculation. We analyzed the results in the light of known systematics on various observable in the Pb region, paying special attention to the unperturbed energy systematics and quadrupole deformation. We find that shape coexistence in the Po isotopes behaves in very much the same way as in the Pt isotopes, i.e., it is somehow hidden, contrary to the situation in the Pb and the Hg isotopes.
