We determine the O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the partonic hemisphere soft function relevant for thrust and jet mass distributions in e+e- annihilation in the dijet limit. In this limit the distributions can be described by a factorization theorem that sums large logarithmic terms and separates perturbative from nonperturbative effects. Using the known O(alpha_s^2) contributions of the jet functions and the hard coefficients in the factorization theorem, constraints from renormalization group evolution and nonabelian exponentiation, and results from numerical integration of O(alpha_s^2) QCD matrix elements, the O(alpha_s^2) corrections of the soft function can be determined unambiguously. We study the impact of subtracting contributions related to the O(Lambda_QCD) renormalon in the partonic threshold using the soft function gap proposed recently by Hoang and Stewart, and we discuss the importance to account for the renormalization group evolution of the gap parameter. As a byproduct we also present the previously unknown next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic anomalous dimensions for the hard coefficient that appear in the factorization theorem for the double differential invariant mass distribution for heavy quark pair production at high energies in the resonance region proven by Fleming etal.
We consider the dijet cross section in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation using the Georgi jet algorithm, or the maximizing jet algorithm. The cross section is factorized into the hard, collinear and soft parts. Each factorized function is computed to next-to-leading order, and is shown to be infrared finite. The large logarithms are resummed at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. By analyzing the phase space for the jet algorithm, the Georgi algorithm turns out to be equivalent to the Sterman-Weinberg and the cone-type algorithms.
We analyze the effects of jet algorithms on each factorized part of the dijet cross sections in $e^+ e^-$ scattering using the soft-collinear effective theory. The jet function and the soft function with a cone-type jet algorithm and the Sterman-Weinberg jet algorithm are computed to next-to-leading order in $α_s$, and are shown to be infrared finite using the dimensional regularization. The integrated and unintegrated jet functions are presented, and compared with other types of jet functions.
We present predictions of two event shape distributions, the light hemisphere mass and the narrow jet broadening, to next-to-leading logarithmic order. We apply the coherent branching formalism to resum the leading O(alphas^n L^{2n-1}) and next-to-leading O(alphas^n L^{2n-2}) infrared logarithms to all orders in the coupling constant. We include the recently calculated non-logarithmic next-to-leading order contributions. Applying simple power corrections to the resummed result gives good agreement with the available data from LEP.
We consider the central exclusive production of high $E_T$ jets $pp\to p+(X+{\rm dijet})+p$. In particular we study the possible contamination of the purely exclusive signal by semi-exclusive production where no other secondaries are emitted in one hemisphere, between the highest $E_T$ dijet and the recoil proton, while in the other hemisphere a third jet, plus possibly additional hadron activity, is allowed, but still separated from the incoming proton by a large rapidity gap. This process arising from the fusion of a hard and a soft Pomeron has not been considered before. It turns out that i…
The thrust distribution in electron-positron annihilation is a classical precision QCD observable. Using renormalization group (RG) evolution in Laplace space, we perform the resummation of logarithmically enhanced corrections in the dijet limit, $T\to 1$ to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy. We independently derive the two-loop soft function for the thrust distribution and extract an analytical expression for the NNLL resummation coefficient $g_3$. To combine the resummed expressions with the fixed-order results, we derive the $\log(R)$-matching and $R$-matching of the NNLL …
The breaking of conventional linear k_\perp-factorization for hard processes in a nuclear environment is by now well established. Here we report a detailed derivation of the nonlinear k_\perp-factorization relations for the production of quark-gluon dijets. This process is of direct relevance to dijets in the proton hemisphere of proton-nucleus collisions at energies of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The major technical problem is a consistent description of the non-Abelian intranuclear evolution of multiparton systems of color dipoles. Following the technique developed in our ear…
We perform the leading logarithmic resummation of nonglobal logarithms for the single-hemisphere jet mass distribution in $e^+e^-$ annihilation including the finite-$N_c$ corrections. The result is compared with the previous all-order result in the large-$N_c$ limit as well as fixed-order perturbative calculations.
We study the factorization of the dijet cross section in $e^+ e^-$ annihilation using the generalized exclusive jet algorithm which includes the cone-type, the JADE, the $k_T$, the anti-$k_T$ and the Cambridge/Aachen jet algorithms as special cases. In order to probe the characteristics of the jet algorithms in a unified way, we consider the generalized $k_T$ jet algorithm with an arbitrary weight of the energies, in which various types of the $k_T$-type algorithms are included for specific values of the parameter. We show that the jet algorithm respects the factorization property for the para…
We present a simple observation about soft amplitudes and soft functions appearing in factorizable cross sections in $ee$, $ep$, and $pp$ collisions that has not clearly been made in previous literature, namely, that the hemisphere soft functions that appear in event shape distributions in $e^+e^-\to$ dijets, deep inelastic scattering (DIS), and in Drell-Yan (DY) processes are equal in perturbation theory up to $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$, even though individual amplitudes may have opposite sign imaginary parts due to changing complex pole prescriptions in eikonal propagators for incoming vs. outgoin…
We study the exclusive heavy quark dijet cross section from $e^+e^-$-annihilation using soft-collinear effective theory. In order to resum the large logarithms of small jet veto parameter $β$ and jet radius $R$, we factorize the cross section into the hard, hard-soft, collinear, and collinear-soft parts. Compared with the case of a massless quark, the jet sector with the collinear and collinear-soft parts can be modified to include the heavy quark mass. The factorization of the jet sector can be systematically achieved through matching onto the boosted heavy quark effective theory. Heavy quark…
Despite mounting evidence that dark matter (DM) exists in the Universe, its fundamental nature remains unknown. We present sensitivity estimates to detect DM particles with a future very-high-energy ($\gtrsim$ TeV) wide field-of-view gamma-ray observatory in the Southern Hemisphere. This observatory would search for gamma rays from the annihilation or decay of DM particles in the Galactic halo. With a wide field of view, both the Galactic Center and a large fraction of the Galactic halo will be detectable with unprecedented sensitivity to DM in the mass range of $\sim$500 GeV to $\sim$2 PeV. T…
We present predictions for soft-drop event shapes of hadronic final states in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in perturbation theory obtained using the CoLoRFulNNLO subtraction method. We study the impact of the soft drop on the convergence of the perturbative expansion for the distributions of three event shape variables, the soft-drop thrust, the hemisphere jet and narrow jet invariant masses. We find that grooming generally improves perturbative convergence for these event shapes. This better perturbative stability, in conjunction with a reduced sens…
We derive a factorization theorem that describes an energetic hadron h fragmenting from a jet produced by a parton i, where the jet invariant mass is measured. The analysis yields a "fragmenting jet function" G_i^h(s,z) that depends on the jet invariant mass s, and on the energy fraction z of the fragmentation hadron. We show that G^h_i can be computed in terms of perturbatively calculable coefficients, J_{ij}(s,z/x), integrated against standard non-perturbative fragmentation functions, D_j^{h}(x). We also show that the sum over h of the integral over z of z G_i^h(s,z) is given by the standard…
We study the colored resonance production at the LHC in a most general approach. We classify the possible colored resonances based on group theory decomposition, and construct their effective interactions with light partons. The production cross section from annihilation of valence quarks or gluons may be on the order of 400 - 1000 pb at LHC energies for a mass of 1 TeV with nominal couplings, leading to the largest production rates for new physics at the TeV scale, and simplest event topology with dijet final states. We apply the new dijet data from the LHC experiments to put bounds on variou…
We investigate the power-suppressed corrections to the fragmentation functions of the current jet in non-singlet deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering. The current jet is defined by selecting final-state particles in the current hemisphere in the Breit frame of reference. Our method is based on an analysis of one-loop Feynman graphs containing a massive gluon, which is equivalent to the evaluation of leading infrared renormalon contributions. We find that the leading corrections are proportional to $1/Q^2$, as in $e^+e^-$ annihilation, but their functional forms are different. We give quanti…
The linear k_\perp-factorization is part and parcel of the pQCD description of high energy hard processes off free nucleons. In the case of heavy nuclear targets the very concept of nuclear parton density becomes ill-defined as exemplified by the recent derivation [2] of nonlinear nuclear k_\perp-factorization for forward dijet production in DIS off nuclei. Here we report a derivation of the related breaking of k_\perp-factorization for single-jet processes. We present a general formalism and apply it to several cases of practical interest: open charm and quark and gluon jet production in the …
Dressed Gluon Exponentiation (DGE) is used to calculate the thrust and the heavy-jet mass distributions in e+e- annihilation in the two-jet region. We perform a detailed analysis of power corrections, taking care of the effect of hadron masses on the measured observables. In DGE the Sudakov exponent is calculated in a renormalization-scale invariant way using renormalon resummation. Neglecting the correlation between the hemispheres in the two-jet region, we express the thrust and the heavy-jet mass distributions in terms of the single-jet mass distribution. This leads to a simple description …
In this work, we complete the calculation of the soft part of the two-loop integrated jet thrust distribution in e+e- annihilation. This jet mass observable is based on the thrust cone jet algorithm, which involves a veto scale for out-of-jet radiation. The previously uncomputed part of our result depends in a complicated way on the jet cone size, r, and at intermediate stages of the calculation we actually encounter a new class of multiple polylogarithms. We employ an extension of the coproduct calculus to systematically exploit functional relations and represent our results concisely. In con…
We construct jet observables for energetic top quarks that can be used to determine a short distance top quark mass from reconstruction in e+ e- collisions with accuracy better than Lambda_{QCD}. Using a sequence of effective field theories we connect the production energy, mass, and top width scales, Q>> m>> Gamma, for the top jet cross section, and derive a QCD factorization theorem for the top invariant mass spectrum. Our analysis accounts for: alpha_s corrections from the production and mass scales, corrections due to constraints in defining invariant masses, non-perturbative corrections f…
We reinterpret jet clustering as an axis-finding procedure which, along with the proton beam, defines the virtual-photon transverse momentum $q_T$ in deep inelastic scattering (DIS). In this way, we are able to probe the nucleon intrinsic structure using jet axes in a fully inclusive manner, similar to the Drell-Yan process. We present the complete list of azimuthal asymmetries and the associated factorization formulae at leading power for deep-inelastic scattering of a nucleon. The factorization formulae involve both the conventional time-reversal-even (T-even) jet function and the T-odd one,…
